Zoe Crecos enters the room. She sees boys everywhere, more than two dozen. She also sees a male coach here, a male coach there. Not one other girl in sight. The setting is a Loyola Academy boys wrestling informational meeting before the start of the 2017-18 season. Crecos is a freshman—with zero experience in wrestling. “I was kind of scared,” the 5-foot-4 Crecos, a Lake Forest resident and School of St. Mary

graduate, recalls more than a year later. One boy, unblinking, later greets Crecos at the gathering of returning and hopeful Ramblers and asks, “How much do you weigh?” Not exactly a suave introduction. “I didn’t mind that question,” Crecos says. The query doesn’t bother the 120-pound Crecos because weight in wrestling is akin to the height of a post player in basketball. They’re essential measurements. Crecos, who had informed LA’s wrestling coaches of her background in martial arts at the meeting, goes through the tryouts, becomes the first female wrestler in program history, and competes for Loyola Academy’s

junior varsity and freshman teams last winter. She wins a combined 30 bouts—all versus boys—and records 25 pins. Remarkable numbers, particularly for a first-year grappler, who tangles for LA at varsity and JV wrestling meets in her sophomore season this winter. Girls must wrestle boys at the high school level because girls wrestling teams have never vied for Illinois High School Association (IHSA) state championships. That could change. NEWS ENGENDERING RESPECT Conti. from PG 1 wrestling teams in three to five years. But this isn’t a story about a girl taking on boys in a contact sport. That is no longer a novelty in wrestling, no longer a curiosity. Zoe Alexa Crecos, 15, is an accomplished wrestler who happens to be a girl. The girl sees potential benefits via the sport, none much bigger than receiving a college scholarship. “The first time I saw her wrestle I thought, ‘OK, this is great,’ ” Crecos’ mother, Diana Barr, says. “It also seemed benign to me.” That made sense. Barr, after all, had watched her daughter claim a gold medal in jiu-jitsu—more of a combat sport than wrestling. Crecos, representing the Chicago-based, legendary Carlson Gracie Team, topped the Teen 3 (females aged 14-15) Orange/ Light division at the Pan American Games in California last February. With the achievement, Crecos also emerged as an International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) champion. “Zoe is not a traditional wrestler by any stretch,” Haney says. “She is a thrower more than anything else, a skill and a strength she developed through her martial arts background. She is always dangerous whenever she is on her feet. You see her good balance when she’s on her feet, her readiness to attack, to gain an advantage. She earned the spot in our program. “Her teammates,” the coach adds, “accepted her and respected her immediately.” Crecos was 8 when she opted to give boxing a try at a warehouse gym in Highland Park. For nearly a year she trained there, participating in punching and agility drills and eventually sparring against 17- and 18-year-old males. She then got involved in the martial art and combat sport Sambo before immersing herself in judo and jiu-jitsu. She learned techniques and battled frequently at the Cohen Brothers Judo and Wrestling club in Vernon Hills and at Carlson Gracie Headquarters in Logan Square. Crecos began strength training at the age of 11 and continues to lift weights regularly. “Zoe also swam and ran at a young age,” Barr

says, adding Zoe, along with Zoe’s younger sister, Maya, exercised her brain in chess competitions at the School of St. Mary. “When she was a newborn there was a certain maturity about her, along with all this determination that she still has. Today she is incredibly disciplined. She trains. She eats right. She wins.” She pinned a Brother Rice High School boy near the end of the first period at a home meet on December 11. Crecos then extended her right hand to her fallen foe, who grabbed it as he returned to his feet. Moments later the referee gripped Crecos’ left wrist and raised it. The victor displayed a quick smile before jogging off the mat to receive congratulations and handshakes and high fives from her teammates and coaches. “At first it felt weird having only boys for teammates,” admits Crecos, who sometimes faces 145pound teammates in matches at practice. “But everybody was welcoming, supportive. “Some of the nicest guys at my school are wrestlers.” Following her freshman wrestling season, Crecos wrestled in a pair of girls wrestling state meets on the same weekend, taking runner-up honors at the Illinois Girls’ Folkstyle Tournament in Aurora and finishing in fourth place at the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association (IWCOA) Tournament in Springfield. Most of the qualifiers at each tourney had had four or five years of experience in the sport compared to Crecos’ grand total of … three months. Crecos wrestles at either 117 or 122 pounds versus girls. Ramblers 182-pound wrestler John Michael Kelly, now a senior at Loyola Academy, served as coach/supporter for Crecos at the event in Springfield last year. His car trip to the state capital started at 4:30 a.m. “Tenacious,” Kelly says of one of Crecos’ salient athletic traits. “When she’s out there she’s not timid at all, not shy. Willing to give it her all each time, while showing good sportsmanship in every match. Zoe has speed, good techniques, and she knows how to get in the right position to execute moves— quick moves. “A real nice person, too, super kind and friendly,”

he adds. “She’s a good friend.” And a busy musician. Crecos plays the piano, violin, and tuba. She is a member of Loyola Academy’s marching, pep, and concert bands. “I’ve heard Zoe play the tuba and the piano at the same time,” her mom says. “It doesn’t exactly sound beautiful, and you’d definitely not ask to hear more of it.” Crecos could have grumbled to Haney about the day she was having at a wrestling invitational at Vernon Hills High School in November. She opted to soldier on instead. “I asked her, ‘You OK?’ ” Haney recalls. “It was

getting rough there at the end, and I didn’t want her to get discouraged. But she told me, ‘I want to continue; I’m ready to go.’ Zoe is very businesslike, works on things, does the job. She learns from her mistakes. “She also has the unique ability to separate what goes on atop the mats from what goes on in life outside of wrestling. Too many athletes often tie what they do in sports to their lives; success or failure in sports determines self-esteem to too many. Zoe isn’t one of those athletes, and that’s refreshing. She’s selfless, easy to coach.”

The Expo, planned and coordinated by Gorton and Lake Forest Open Lands Association (LFOLA), will bring together local environmental and outdoor organizations, vendors, and businesses. “Lake Forest Open Lands strives to connect people to nature every day of the year,” says Paula Claire, LFOLA’s vice president and director of development. “The Mountainfilm fest is a perfect example of capturing peoples’ passion for nature all over the world in stunning images on film.” Also on January 26, Adrenaline Shorts will begin at 4 p.m., followed by Best of Fest Shorts at 7 p.m. Indeed, getting the worldwide festival in Lake Forest has been a real coup for Gorton’s state-

Escape to peace at Ragdale stirs Chicago writer Taylor BY DAVID RUTTER THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

The serenity of Ragdale’s 50-acre retreat and refuge in Lake Forest called to Elizabeth Taylor, and she had to answer. It was exactly the place where one of Chicago’s leading literary figures needed to be. Taylor has come here to work. Her fans and admirers will get a snapshot of her progress on a solo literary work of non-fiction—End of the Union—on January 23, when Ragdale Foundation hosts “Tea & Talk” from 10-11:30 a.m. It’s a morning of pastries, tea and conversation. End of the Union will examine grief and heartache after the Civil War as seen through the eyes of women who survived the war but not its permanent pain. Ragdale Foundation sits on the one-time estate of architect Howard Van Doren Shaw at 1260 Green Bay Road in Lake Forest. Since its founding in 1976, the foundation has offered artists, poets and authors a place where their intellectual gears can mesh quietly to crank new thoughts from old dreams. Eleven of them accept live-in working residencies for a month at a time while sharing meals, camaraderie and the preserved, primitive prairie on Lake Michigan’s shoreline. Taylor will be on the literary stage alone— though not isolated. But it doesn’t really feel lonely because there are so many people who are my champions, friends and advisors; they all are constantly talking to me about this. “So many people are in this with me.” Co-editor of the National Book Review, Taylor, in addition to her time as a Time correspondent, served as literary editor of the Chicago Tribune, Pulitzer Prize jurist and president of the National Books Critics Circle. She persuaded the Chicago Tribune to save Printers Row Lit Fest in 2003, and it stands as the Midwest’s premier book fair. In her different personas as critic, editor and literary philosopher, Taylor intermittently has been overwhelmed by as many as 200 books a day arriving on her doorstep, all by authors seeking her approval, acknowledgment and, if they’re lucky, advice. She’s a collaborator.. “I worked on this book proposal for close to five years,” she says. “I’m slow, cautious and deliberate as a researcher and writer. Spark and Addison Ebeling embraces new roles, ignites Loyola Academy’s hoops team BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Addison Ebeling wouldn’t hesitate to pounce on a loose ball at the end of a taut girls basketball game. The Loyola Academy junior guard/forward also wouldn’t pass up any opportunity to embarrass a teammate. “I’m goofy,” the fun-loving, super-positive Ebeling, a third-year varsity member, admits. “In a hallway at school sometimes, if a teammate is nearby and I happen to see a boy she likes, I’ll yell that boy’s name. “My teammate then usually screams, ‘Stop it!’ Or, ‘Staahhhhhhhp it!’ ” Coincidentally one of Ebeling’s new roles this winter, depending on the matchup, is to stop the other team’s top scorer. Martinez, a thrill-per-second competitor, has uncanny court vision and whips a variety of smart passes. “I get to play with the greatest point guard in the world,” says Ebeling, a right-side/outside hitter for Loyola Academy’s Class 4A supersectional volleyball team last fall. Ebeling’s biggest fan? Dad Lionel, no question. He served as a vital member of the Ramblers’ 1993 Hall of Fame volleyball ball team, which was inducted in 2006. That squad went 33-1, with its lone loss coming in the postseason against eventual state champion Glenbrook North. “My dad watches more basketball film than I do,” the daughter says. “This morning [ January 4] he told me, ‘You need to shoot more.’ At home he often watches, with my mom, game film of the game we had just played hours earlier. They’ll watch the game again on a laptop. I’ll hear them. They’ll whistle and cheer while viewing it. They really get into it. “Basketball,” she adds, “is my favorite sport. It’s more up-and-down running than volleyball is. There’s more energy. My dad likes to joke with me, saying I would have been a better volleyball player if I had committed to it fully at an early age.” Ebeling played travel volleyball for one of Lionel’s teams in the sixth grade. About halfway through that season, Addison made a decision. “She ditched me,” a smiling Lionel Ebeling recalls. “She stopped playing volleyball back then in order to focus more on basketball. But I was fine with that. Look, she made the right choice. She loves basketball, and she continues to improve as a player. “It’s fun for me, watching her play basketball and reach another level each season.”

It’s also about finishing around the basket, rebounding, being aggressive, playing tough defense. Addison has been asked to do more for us than she did in her first two seasons. I like what I’ve seen. “With [standout senior point guard] Julia Martinez being able to find Addison in situations, Addison is relishing and enjoying her new roles.” Ebeling—averaging about eight points and three rebounds per game for a 17-5 squad through January 10—scored all five of her points in the second quarter of LA’s 49-29 defeat of visiting Lake Zurich High School on January 4. Her trey opened the scoring in the frame, and her two-point field goal stretched the Ramblers’ lead to 24-12 at the 4:25 mark. The Evanston resident and Haven Middle School graduate also finished with two rebounds and two steals against the Bears, who trailed 28-16 at halftime. She came up big in the paint against many of her friends in LA’s 48-45 defeat of Evanston Township High School on December 21. “I’m driving more this year, getting more rebounds, and I like the challenges that come with defending

It’s a mid-November morning, and I’m in Poland, shivering in the dark and hearing a medley of haphazard animal noises at the Warsaw Zoo. OK, not really. I’m actually in a booth at Country Kitchen in Highland Park, listening intently as Jody Schmidt—vivid storyteller, a Highland Park

resident since 1993, a Da’at Educational Expedition sales manger since 2005—describes another memorable part of a Jewish heritage trip that she and 18 other empty nesters took last October 11-20. The Schmidt, Rosen, Podell & Cohn of Chicago group (family and friends), which hatched the plan for the pilgrimage at a Shabbat dinner in 2017, visited Krakow and Warsaw and Lodz in Poland before flying to Budapest, Hungary, on October 17. The Warsaw Zoo is the zoo in the World War II drama film The Zookeeper’s Wife, based on Diane Ackerman’s book of the same name. Dr. Jan Zabinski, the director and superintendent of the zoo, and his wife, Antonina, gave refuge in their home and the zoo to about 300 Jews and underground fighters during the Holocaust in German-occupied Poland. “We had arrived early for our tour and could not enter the villa because they were finishing a re-enactment of the events that took place there,” recalls the 55-year-old Schmidt, who had ordered coffee, only coffee, since she had consumed a bowl of oatmeal at home hours before our visit. “We sat outside in the cold in a circle, very tired at the end of a long day, while a docent provided us with background about the Warsaw Zoo. Finally, they let us wait in what was the zookeeper’s office. Then, just as we began our tour, Jan and Antonina’s daughter [Teresa Zabinska Zawadzki] walked right past us. She was emotional, from seeing her family’s history re-enacted in her childhood home.” Schmidt, who majored in International Affairs (with a minor in Jewish Studies) at American University in Washington, D.C., develops and organizes custom educational tours to Jewish heritage destinations for individuals, families, and various groups at Da’at (“knowledge”, in Hebrew), among other responsibilities. One of her quests for the journey to parts of classical Europe in October was to discover What is it like today to be Jewish in each of the four cities? “We chose Budapest after Poland so that we could end in a beautiful city where there is a larger, growing Jewish community that is experiencing a

rebirth of Jewish religious life,” Schmidt explains. If you took the temperature of Schmidt’s passion for travel and then took the temperature of her passion for Jewish education, you’d see a sizzling dead heat. “The best kind of education is to visit faraway places and meet people along the way,” says Schmidt, who was 10 when she visited Israel for the first time, an experience that deepened her understanding of, and connection to, Israel and ignited her love of experiential education. “Visiting historic sites, experiencing nature, trying the food, and listening to music are key parts to any trip, but one of the most important elements is to hear local people tell their stories. “Stories,” she adds, “bring history to life.” Schmidt’s group in October drove to the Auschwitz IIBirkenau extermination camp, the largest in a network of 48 concentration and extermination camps where more than 1,100,000 Jews were murdered. “It was mostly left exactly as it was when it was liberated in 1945,” says the Nicolet High School (Glendale, Wisconsin) graduate and native of Bayside, Wisconsin. “You see the chimneys from the barracks, and they go as far as you can see in all directions, and you see the remains of the crematoria. It was huge and horrible. As hard as it was, it is important we visit Poland, and really all of Central Europe, to bear witness and remember. It us up to us to make sure the world never forgets.” Schmidt, fluent in Hebrew, saw to it that an Israeli tour educator accompanied the Group of 19 from beginning to end. A local expert guide

in each city also enlightened the visitors. At Auschwitz the tour educator pointed out his motherin-law, a twin, in a picture. He then mentioned Josef Mengele, aka “Angel of Death”, a German SS officer and physician who conducted genetic research on human subjects. Mengele led horrifying experiments on twins. “Telling stories of people was one of the ways our educator tried to give us a deeper experience, but we didn’t expect that one of those people would be someone so closely related to him,” says Schmidt, whose husband, David, joined her for the 10-day trip. Jody and David, a Winnetka native, got married in 1991. They had met in D.C., and they have two daughters, 24-year-old Adena and 21-year-old Noa. Spending time with the children thrills the couple. Both also enjoy sailing and listening to music. “Music,” Jody says, “is a tool our Israeli educator used to help him tell stories. He had arranged for music to be played while our group was in a cemetery in Poland. He also used poetry, diary entries and literature as storytelling tools. Food was another great way in which we experienced the local culture; we participated in a dine-around in Krakow, stopping at various restaurants and pubs to taste local food and beers. “A Jewish heritage trip, like any trip,” Schmidt continues, “should be one where the logistics and content come together to create a seamless, unforgettable experience.” There was more to the group’s experience at the Warsaw Zoo on October 16. The visitors from Illinois wanted to meet the Zabinskis’ daughter, Teresa, and thank her for all of the Jewish lives her family had saved. Many had read The Zookeeper’s Wife and seen the movie. “We continued to see the hiding places in the villa and learn just how brave and clever they were to hide people in plain sight, all while putting their own lives in danger,” Schmidt says. “Initially Teresa did not want to talk to us, but at the end, when we walked outside, she was there and agreed to pose for a picture with us. “What a wonderful, moving night.”
