A Greenhouse Gets the Green Light NEW TRIER ROOFTOP GREENHOUSE TO HONOR THE MEMORY OF A BELOVED FORMER STUDENT. EDITED BY DEBBIE LEE THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

The New Trier Educational Foundation, District 203, and the family of Sofi Troglia have partnered to raise funds for a rooftop greenhouse at New Trier High School (NTHS). This week marks two years since the passing of Troglia, a former student in the district’s Educational and Life Skills program. “Sofi was well-known and beloved,” says Denise Dubravec, Winnetka campus Principal. Describing it as “a warm and welcoming oasis in her memory,” Dubravec says, “this greenhouse will help current students in the program learn about science, art, and business while developing important vocational and social-emotional skills.” According to Joanne Panopoulos, Assistant Superintendent for Special Education, the greenhouse will provide students in the ELS and Transition Programs with the opportunity to learn valuable skills dealing with plant growth and proper nutrition. It will also supply vocational skills which include basic home econom-

When they were young girls growing up in Lake Forest, Cecelia Gottman would tease Lauren Fairchild for burying her nose in books. “As a kid, I wasn’t as interested in it,” Gottman confesses. She preferred more active pursuits. “I would jokingly make fun of her for reading all the time—I was more into things like spying,” she says with a laugh. But the two maintained a lifelong friendship. And true to form, Fairchild, 42, went on to teach high school English before accepting her current post as a sixth-to-eighth grade reading and language arts teacher at the School of St. Mary in Lake Forest. Meanwhile, Gottman, 43, applied her high-energy personality to the world of dot-coms before becoming a strategic planner for industrial supply company Grainger. Now they’ve come full circle. Combining Fairchild’s love of books with Gottman’s penchant for play, they’ve co-founded Lit League— a start-up that aims to make child literacy fun. Monthly subscription boxes combine a carefully selected children’s book with an assortment of related activities to engage young readers long after they’ve turned the last page. While the business officially launched last February, its seeds were planted years earlier, when Fairchild was teaching in Santa Monica, California. “I had some high-achieving students who loved to read, and then there were those who

Each title—curated by Fairchild and Christina Corriveau (a former teaching colleague and Lit League’s third partner)—must meet a certain set of criteria before making its way to your bookshelf. “We include books by well-known authors,” says Fairchild. “But they are not necessarily their best-known works; we want the hidden gems that maybe not everyone is familiar with.” Selections include classic picture books (Curious George Goes Camping) to contemporary chapter books (Alvin Ho: Allergic to Girls, School, and Other Scary Things). Diversity is also a consideration. “Representation matters,” she says, citing Lenore Look’s Alvin Ho series and Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan as two noteworthy examples. “There are so many amazing writing voices out there, and we are always actively looking for both male and female protagonists from all different backgrounds.” But at the end of the day, Fairchild stresses that the guiding principle is to choose “high interest stories that all kids can enjoy.” Activities that accompany the books are also primarily conceived by Fairchild and Corriveau, although some collaborations are outsourced. For example, in their effort to create a new line of boxes for older readers, Lit League has partnered with Friendly Family Productions, the owner of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie series. Fairchild says that testing out pioneer activities has been great fun—even if the results are hit-or-miss. “We wanted to include a butter churning activity involving a jar and some marbles, but we didn’t get the results we were looking for,” she says, before adding with a laugh, “I don’t know

how people on YouTube get it to work!” In addition to personal trialand-error experiments, Lit League boxes must also satisfy the most stringent beta testers: the founders’ children. “Our kids are definitely involved in the book choosing process,” says Fairchild. “And when it comes to designing activities, we make sure each picture book has a playtime sheet with ideas for physical games. We learned that from my son, who won’t sit still for an extended period of time.” Other physical components, such as crafting, are intended to be enjoyed with caregivers. Gottman claims her nephew and mother-inlaw are a living testament to the boxes’ success. “She drives a couple of hours to see him once a month for a grandma date,” she says. “He’s so excited to receive the box, and they love spending time together working on these activities. It’s been a great, creative way for them to create a bond.” “It’s also an incentive for play dates with friends and screen-free time,” adds Fairchild. Refuting the notion that reading is strictly a solo chore, Lit League offers sibling activity packages and detailed instructions for hosting book clubs. But the company’s mission to create happy, engaged young readers isn’t limited to their customer’s homes. A portion of their proceeds goes to Bernie’s Book Bank, a nonprofit provider of quality books to at-risk children in the Chicago area. “The statistic is that nearly two-thirds of underprivileged kids do not have books in the home,” says Fairchild. “I am someone who has worked in the Chicago public school system and believes in public education. PERSONAL PICKS LIT LEAGUE’S FOUNDERS SHARE THEIR FAVORITE CHILDHOOD BOOKS Christina Corriveau: I love too many children’s books to name a single favorite, but one book I’ve discovered as a mom that I want to read again and again is Silver Packages: An Appalachian Christmas Story by Cynthia Rylant. This moving story tells of an Appalachian boy who waits every winter for a Christmas train that will bring him and all the boys and girls where he lives the only gifts they will have to open on Christmas morning. Although the boy never finds the gift he most wants, he comes to realize that over the years he received what he most needed. And through the train, an act of returned kindness by a wealthy gentleman, the boy learns the gift of giving back. Lauren Fairchild: Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey. It’s a hundred percent associated with loving memories of reading with my mom. And that’s a huge part for many of us—as children develop a love for reading, it’s often related to the act of spending time with loved ones. Cecelia Gottman: The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein is one of my favorites. I still get tears in my eyes when I read it. In the beginning, I didn’t understand the lesson behind it; my brother had to explain it to me. It was one of the first books I got my kids when they were young and now it’s battered up. A great life lesson—plus I love the art.

FOREST GREENS MAKES GLUTEN-FREE HEALTHY EATING AN EASY OPTION BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

The morning sun coming through the windows at Forest Greens Juice Bar in Lake Bluff splashes little pools of light on the café tables, illuminating the rainbow-hued array of cold-pressed juices in the cooler. Behind the counter, staff workers fill bottles with a bright green batch of just-made juice, and mother-daughter owners Nancy Dini and Annemarie Ranallo discuss the batch of soup Dini will be making that day. “Mom’s soups are becoming legendary here,” says Ranallo. “They fly off the shelves.” But there’s more than just soup. The grab and go section of ready-to-eat natural foods, a cooler full of heat-and-eat selections, and an array of freshpressed juices are just part of the picture. There is also a broad menu of made-to-order items ranging from gluten-free avocado breakfast toasts to roasted vegetable quinoa bowls. “We cover all of the bases,” says Ranallo. “Coldpressed juices, smoothies, tea and coffee, snacks, and full meals that are keto, paleo, and vegan. My vision for Forest Greens was to provide a way for people to access healthy organic food and drink at any time—offerings that are portioned correctly and prepared with fresh, high-quality, organically grown ingredients.” Dini and Ranallo opened Forest Greens in July.

But the seeds for the idea were planted shortly after Ranallo had her first baby. Anthony was a happy and active infant, except for two problems: asthma and sensitive skin that was prone to eczema. “We had him in and out of doctor’s offices and it got to where he had to be hospitalized for the asthma,” Ranallo recalls. “The only cure they would prescribe was to pump him full of drugs and steroids. I was especially opposed to the steroids because they just mask illness rather than treat it.” Looking for better solutions, Ranallo found a pediatrician who worked with her to shape a holistic approach to Anthony’s healing. Central to this was clean eating and drinking—an approach to nutrition that cut out processed foods made with unhealthy additives, refined sugar, and highlyprocessed grains.

“Pretty quickly, we started seeing improvement with Anthony’s conditions,” she says. “His skin cleared and he was breathing better.” The whole Ranallo family adopted a similar diet, adding a lot of freshpressed juices to the regimen. By 2016, Ranallo had four children who were active in a range of sports. “I’d be with them and I’d see firsthand that a lot of the kids’ teammates had no idea that eating better could keep their bodies in better health and improve their performance. I thought, ‘You know? I should really open a shop that would make getting the right food and drink possible.’” The Ranallos rented a commercial kitchen and tested the retail food waters by supplying protein bars, raw desserts, salads, and smoothies to Reprise Coffee in Winnetka. Their success prompted them to open Forest Greens. “In the beginning,” says Ranallo, “I thought we would just be able to do juices and raw treats. But finding this space, which had room for a fullyequipped kitchen, allowed us to offer much more.” Cold-pressed juices are a focal

point. There are always at least three green options, such as Goodness Greens (raw kale, spinach, celery, cucumber, parsley, apple, and lemon); other staples include celery, carrot, beet, and an all-fruit selection. The Rainbow, for example, has red and green apples, green grapes, strawberries, mango, and lemon. Juice shots—a more-concentrated version of the coldpress juices—come in three varieties. Then there are “refreshers”—combinations of cold-pressed juices blended with coconut water, kombucha, or fermented lemonade. Smoothies run the gamut from Liquid Sunshine (coconut milk, orange juice, strawberries, pineapple, mango, peach, and honey) to the Black Magic (coconut water, blueberries, spinach, activated charcoal, and lemon.) Snacks and treats include five different protein bars, steel-cut oats, and raw desserts, which includes

a clever play on a Twix bar. Satisfying customers’ breakfast and lunch appetites, there are six varieties of Acai bowls—fruits, vegetables, and almond or coconut milks topped with house-made granola, and natural sweeteners. Gluten-free toast can come spread with avocado, egg salad, or nut butters and fruits. For pasta, there’s the Mac and NOT Cheese, made with chickpea pasta, cashews, sesame seeds, and nutritional yeast. The heartiest offerings include a daily selection of dairy-free hot soups and chilis. Sneakers squeak-squeak-squeak atop the hardwood. A basketball bounces. A referee’s whistle chirps. A basketball clangs off the rim. It’s not the sweetest combination of sounds, but it’s the haphazard symphony you hear at hoops games. Loyola Academy junior forward Isabella Ogliore unintentionally interrupted the “concert” during a preseason Fall League game this year— and likely elicited cringes from those within earshot. “I heard a crack,” Ogliore said of the bone that snapped in her right foot after the Rambler had collected a rebound in the home gym. Ogliore missed the first 10 games of the 20192020 winter basketball season and returned to game action on December 12, when LA hosted Providence Catholic High School and routed the one-loss Celtics 51-29. Ogliore didn’t start in the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference crossover contest in Wilmette. But she certainly sparked her club off the bench, scoring six points, coming down with three rebounds, and battling relentlessly (she knows no other way) as LA improved its overall record to 7-4. Ogliore’s effort didn’t surprise Ramblers coach Jeremy Schoenecker in the least. He had plenty of reasons to award a spot to the then-sophomore after varsity tryouts last winter, and he was thrilled about being able to deploy the effective post player again more than two weeks before the New Year. “We missed her,” Schoenecker said minutes after meeting with his Ramblers in a classroom following the Providence game. “She does a lot of things well for us.” “Isabella’s aggressiveness,” LA junior Silvana Scarsella said, “helps us a lot.” Scarsella’s three-point shooting ignited LA and seared Providence Catholic in the first half last week. Lighting It Up! RABBI JACOB ROSENBERG SEES THE HOLIDAY SEASON AS A FESTIVAL OF SUPERNATURAL LIGHT. BY MONICA KASS ROGERS ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Rabbi Jacob Rosenberg is used to it. Strangers meeting him for the first time hear his title, see his bright, bearded face, and the yarmulke perched on the back of his head, and make assumptions about his beliefs. They are usually wrong. “Most people don’t know what Messianic Judaism actually is—that we believe Jesus is the Messiah,” says Rosenberg, Rabbi at the Adat Hatikvah synagogue in Deerfield. “Some people think Jesus was a prophet. Some think he was crazy. Others, that he was just a nice, Jewish boy. But we believe he was the Messiah that the prophets and Hebrew scriptures foretold.” So asking Rosenberg, “What does Hanukkah, or Christmas, mean to you?” yields some interesting answers. Most simply? “Light. Jesus is the light of the world,” says Rosenberg, quoting from the gospels of Matthew and John: “His light is what brings each of us out of darkness, and gives hope to all nations.” Rosenberg’s sermons and family celebrations during the winter holiday season focus on this. “As Messianic Jews, we celebrate the best of both Hanukkah and Christmas and how they are linked through Yeshua [the Hebrew term for Jesus],” Rosenberg explains. “There is continuity between ancient prophecies written in the Hebrew scriptures and texts, and the Greek scripture (the New Testament). Together, they form a path for the whole world to be unified under one God.” Even though the original events of Hanukkah in the second century B.C.E. were, in Rosenberg’s words, “a political chaos machine,” he says that lighting candles today, “reminds us that Jesus is a light that never goes out. The events surrounding his birth were the fulfilment of hundreds of prophecies. So, during Hanukkah at Adat Hatikvah, we sing the traditional Jewish blessings and light each of the candles from the center candle representing Yeshua, and finish each blessing in his name.” At home with his wife Heather, and two children, the menorah Rosenberg lights on each of the eight days of Hanukkah is one he has had his whole life. “It’s not a fancy menorah,” he says, “and it’s covered with the candle wax of 40 years of Hanukkah celebrations. But that menorah along with a recording of my father singing the blessings, got me through a difficult

time in my childhood. It was a spark of light in darkness then, and is a reminder today of the blessings of my family, our connection to each other and to Jesus as the light. “ Heather grew up in a Christian home, celebrating Christmas as a child with typical American cultural traditions: Christmas trees, gifts, and holiday treats. But when Jacob and Heather married and started raising their own famil y, “ We wanted our celebrations to focus more on Jesus and less on the decorations. For us [the season] is about light in the darkness and Yeshua being the light of the world.” Skipping Santa and yule logs, the Rosenbergs prefer annual outings t o

holiday light festivals, celebrating at places such as the Cuneo Mansion and Gardens, or the Chicago Botanic Garden. Rosenberg’s journey to becoming a Messianic Jewish Rabbi had its roots in family history. “My d a d ’s p a r e n t s adhered to traditional Jewish faith and customs,” he says. “But then my dad’s older b r o t h e r became a believer in Jesus. Because my dad and mom were hippies, they wanted nothing to do with either tradition, so they drove all the way across the country to Oregon to get away from that. They actually

lived in a van down by the river,” he says with a laugh. “There was a little church community there that used to do potlucks. So my parents started going to those for the free food.” Eventually? Rosenberg’s parents accepted more than the food, became believers, and started a Messianic Jewish synagogue in New York. Today, four Rosenberg family members are Messianic Jewish rabbis, and another, Rich Nathan, leads the congregation of one of the Midwest’s largest nondenominational Christian churches. Despite deep grounding in this, Rosenberg’s earliest aspiration was to be a comic book artist. He studied art at the New York Institute of Technology and took a summer class at the School of Visual Arts; his talent earned him acceptance at the prestigious Pratt Institute. But when his cousin graduated from Pratt and couldn’t find employment, “I decided I had better switch to computers to study 3D animation and other more-lucrative skills,” says Rosenberg. His work as a computer technologist in Manhattan brought him a good salary and the high-flying lifestyle to go with it. “But I reached a point where I really didn’t like who I had become through all that,” he says. Changing course, Rosenberg went back to school. He got a bachelor’s degree in religion at Nyack College, a Master of Divinity at Alliance Theological Seminary, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in theological studies at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He then taught and served as a guest preacher at Adat Hatikvah, which eventually led to his post as rabbi. “I often tell people, it’s not where you start; it’s where you are headed,” says Rosenberg. “And the holiday season is a very good time to think much more deeply about that. Who are you, really? Who do you want to be? Who do you believe God to be? And what will you do with that?” “During the holidays, the focus in much of our culture is on ‘presents’ rather than ‘presence’— God’s presence in your life, and your presence in the community and in other’s lives,” Rosenberg concludes. “We are at this place in time where people rush from one thing to the next, or substitute social media for being physically present with others. But one of the best presents you can give is to be present. Look for ways to do that this holiday— with your family, and for others in the community, through service organizations, your church, your synagogue or your own chosen actions. Doing that is a great way to be the lights that we celebrate at Hanukkah and Christmas.”
