THE LITTLE CLOSET THAT COULD MIDWEST VETERANS CLOSET IS EXPANDING TO BETTER SERVICE VETERANS AND ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY. BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
North Chicago’s Mary Carmody stands in the middle of a tangled field of grasses, with wooded acreage beyond. To her right, a clapboard farmhouse looms near a copse of oak trees. There are weathered outbuildings and broad stretches of cracked concrete pads in between. But next year, says Carmody, Executive Director of the Midwest Veterans Closet (MVC), this vista is set to dramatically change. “That’s when we plan to break ground to build our new facility,” she says. The rambling acreage was purchased on Green Bay Road a few months ago with a $500,000 state grant. The site will be built out to become the 501(c)3 organization’s much-needed new home, expanding what has virtually been a rented closet into a bigger, better-equipped space for the multitude of free goods and services MVC provides to active duty military, and veterans. Currently operating out of a rental unit four blocks south, MVC has been a reliedupon source for food, clothing, shoes, household goods, and furniture since it opened in 2014. Carmody, named the American Red Cross of Chicago & Northern Illinois’ 2019 Military Hero of the Year for her work at MVC, says she has been grateful for the space. But the warren of rooms are tiny, difficult to access (especially for veterans in wheelchairs), and lack adequate storage space. All problematic—especially given the volume of goods that flow to veterans, and military through MVC. “In the last six months, we have given out 28,453 pounds of food,” says Carmody. “But need goes far beyond that. Each month 550 individuals—about half active duty military, and half veterans—come to us for one or more of our services.” That could be anything from new shoes or a winter coat, to basic computer training and job-search

assistance. MVC even provides business attire for job interviews. The planned new facility will not only expand MVC’s space by 500 percent to 10,000 square feet—it will add new services. Perhaps most exciting, “We are adding

Lovell Federal Health Care Center. The plan is to give these women on-site job training, and then employment in the kitchen.” Residents in the house will receive basic culinary training from two local business women—Leslie Habjan of Aunt Winnie’s Cookies, and Catherine Thomas O’Meara of Heller Catering, who will be renting the kitchen to operate their food companies. “It’s a win-win for both the veterans and the women operating their companies here,” says Carmody. Carmody is also planning to add an education center to host training seminars, and to offer legal consultations for veterans from law schools in the area. She has also begun talks with Elawa Farm in Lake Forest to add vegetable gardens and gardening training on the grounds. “North Chicago is a food desert, so having gardens here to both teach veterans how to grow produce, and then to have the potential for fresh crops grown here for them to eat—that would be a beautiful thing,” says Carmody. In addition, the new facility will have a larger Food and Nutrition Center, or “grocery store,” which MVC stocks daily from donors including Lake Forest Jewel-Osco and The Fresh Market; the space provides veterans with whatever food items they need, free of

charge. There will be expanded display sections for clothing, housewares, and furniture, as well as a storage warehouse for donations. But to bring everything to fruition, MVC will need to raise substantial support—both funding and professional. “We are currently searching for an architect and planner to help us shape the initial plans,” says Carmody. With those ready, MVC will work with Lake County contractors and apprentices to erect the building. “ We have already had interest from the general public in how they can help with the building fund,” says Carmody. “We are currently shaping a memorial brick project, which will allow people to honor both veterans who have fallen and living veterans we currently serve. Individuals, families and corporations who want to donate to this cause will have a brick inscribed with the name of a fallen veteran they wish to memorialize. That brick will then be displayed in the façade of the new building.” While the tasks at hand seem monumental, Carmody believes that supporting military and veterans is a cause that Lake County finds worthwhile. “We have come so far from the day I started with nothing but a borrowed landscaping trailer filled with clothing donations,” she says. “Just making people aware that the need is there brings heartfelt response.” For more information, visit midwestveteranscloset.org.

Stalwart sides include roasted Brussels sprouts, asparagus, creamed Swiss chard, roasted mushrooms, and—one of Amy’s kids’ favorites—her homemade mac and cheese. And even if it sounds like a lot of food (and yes, it will be), you can’t finish an order without a little gem and creamy Dijon salad, made tableside. Delish, especially with some bread on the table from the ladies at Hewn, conveniently located just down the street. The Barn has received rave reviews throughout Chicago, from fans new and old. But earlier this year, Amy and
The first time I met Amy Morton, North Shore restaurateur and member of the Morton Steakhouse dynasty, we drank French press coffee on velvety sofas at Found Kitchen & Social House in downtown Evanston — back when it had that 1920s Paris vibe, before she traveled to Cuba and came back to redo the entire decor. That was three years ago, and the Highland Park native had just embarked on The Barn, a new “meat-centric” concept that had been marinating since she was 18. It was located one block away, in a building that once housed Borden Dairy’s delivery service (hence the name). Amy’s culinary resume is well-known among Chicago foodies. For more than a decade, she worked side-by-side with her late father, Arnie, learning the restaurant business from the ground up at his restaurants. She went on to train employees at Arnie’s Restaurant, Morton’s Market Place, and First Street Pier before opening her first restaurant with brother Michael Morton (also now a successful restaurateur who lives with his family in Las Vegas) in 1988. From there she opened Mirador and The Blue Room, launching full-speed into a restaurant career that included consulting and overseeing day-to-day operations at some of Chicago’s most coveted eateries. We’re born who we are, and life is about getting us to where we’ve always been.” Not all tables have tablecloths these days, and the ambiance is less austere and more hometown. “I want it to feel like a place where you can walk in and get a steak or a hamburger any night of the week,” she adds. And as Amy has said many times, if she learned anything from her father and grandfather (her grandfather owned Morton’s restaurant in Hyde Park) it was that hospitality is about more than serving people a meal. It’s about making them feel warm and welcome, as you would welcome a guest

Emmett Burnside paced New Trier High School’s boys basketball team in a trio of statistics in a home game last week. Two were conventional. The 6-foot-7 senior pulled down nine rebounds and blocked three shots in the Trevians’ 63-62 overtime loss to Glenbrook South’s undefeated Titans on December 5. The other stat? Random acts of kindness. Burnside led the Trevs with one in that category. Late in the game, right after a referee had indicated he needed to wipe the basketball—maybe it was wet; maybe it was a bit dirty—an alert Burnside marched toward the official. The forward then grabbed the front of his No. 34 jersey with both hands and stretched it toward the ref. Burnside’s unsaid message: Here, sir, use this to clean the ball. The act was unusual. It was funny. And it was kind. Not so nice was New Trier’s start. Coach Scott Fricke’s club trailed GBS 20-6 after one quarter in the Central Suburban League South opener for both schools. The Titans raced to a 10-0 lead in Winnetka by hitting their first four fieldgoal attempts, including a pair of three-pointers. Fricke took a timeout, and his boys responded by hitting back-to-back baskets in a 30-second span. Senior guard Will Ryan tallied his team’s first two points at the 4:44 mark, before senior guard Trevor Boehm made it a 10-4 game via his bucket. But the visitors ended the quarter on a 7-0 run and held a 14-point lead after eight minutes. “One possession at a time,” New Trier senior guard John Carragher said of the team’s collective mindset before the start of the second quarter. “We knew if we stayed focused on every possession in the second quarter, we’d be able to cut that deficit.” NT (3-2, 0-1) did just that en route to outscoring GBS (6-0, 1-0) 17-6 in the second frame. Carragher (game-high 23 points) scored the first five points of the quarter and added a trey with 2:15 left before intermission. Burnside came through at both ends of the court in an impressive sequence shortly thereafter, blocking a shot and quickly collecting the rebound before nailing a three-pointer to pare the Titans’ advantage to 24-20. NT found itself behind only 26-23 at the break, thanks to junior guard Jacob Toth’s trey in the final minute of the second quarter. “Our team is tough, with tons of grit,” Fricke said. “There’s no quit in any of my players; you saw that in the second quarter.” New Trier kept pecking away at the start of

GBS went up 55-53 with just under a minute to go, and Carragher forced the OT session with a field goal—at 0:11—following a Ryan offensive rebound. Carragher scored NT’s seven points in OT. “Crushing. I’m crushed,” said Ryan, who hit three of NT’s nine three-pointers. “Our team, it’s been overlooked, but we have a lot of talent. And we’re tough, scrappy, gritty. We battled tonight, battled hard after that tough first quarter. If we’re down 30 points, or up by five, we’re going to play the same way; we’re going to play with determination and focus.” NOTABLE: New Trier traveled to Wintrust Arena in Chicago on December 6 for a Chicago Elite Classic game against Lane Tech. NT lost 57-48 on DePaul University’s home court. A DEDICATED AND ENERGETIC NEW TRIER TEACHER AND BOYS SOCCER COACH IS WELL WORTH A LISTEN. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
No phone. No computer. Oh, and one more thing, young man: You’re not allowed to speak English, at anytime, for seven months. Matt Ravenscraft faced those daunting challenges in Logrono, a city in northern Spain, as a Lombard native and Wheaton College junior double-majoring in Spanish and secondary education in the 2007-2008 academic year. “Full immersion,” says the 33-year-old Ravenscraft, now a Spanish teacher and the boys varsity soccer coach at New Trier High School (NTHS). “It was a phenomenal experience, studying abroad that way and for that long. It made me work on my language skills, constantly. “Hardest thing I’ve ever done.” Springtime, 2016. Ravenscraft—a teacher/assistant coach in two sports (soccer and boys track and field) since 2010—is named head boys soccer coach at NTHS. He is excited and anxious, grateful and emboldened, and probably tremulous, bordering on daunted. He had exactly zero days of experience as a varsity helmsman, after all, before receiving the plum job offer from NTHS Athletic Director Augie Fontanetta. Ravenscraft is, in many ways, in Logrono … all over again. The former Glenbard East High School holding midfielder embraced that opportunity on his home turf this time, swiftly and feet first, eager and poised to execute a clean tackle off the pitch. “Shortly after finding out the job was mine, I poked my head inside Jim Burnside’s office and sought his advice,” recalls Ravenscraft, referring to New Trier’s longtime girls varsity soccer coach, who has guided teams of Trevians to six state championships since 2003. “I also popped in for visits with [girls basketball coach] Teri Rodgers, [girls lacrosse coach/assistant football c o ac h ] Pe t e Collins, and [baseball coach] Mike Napoleon. Coaching legends, all of them. Hall of Fame coaches; I had access to so many of them. How lucky was I? I discussed different aspects of coaching with them, how best to build a team’s culture, all kinds of topics.

“They were helpful and generous with their time—that, right there, is an example of what makes New Trier a special place,” continues the Evanston resident, the husband of Hailey (a two-time national champion Wheaton College soccer player), and the father of Paisley, 4, and Heath, 2. “It’s a privilege to teach and coach at New Trier.” Chris Van Den Berg was Ravenscraft’s social studies teacher in high school. He also served as a Glenbard East varsity boys soccer assistant coach when Ravenscraft was a Ram from 2001-2005. Van Den Berg applied for a teaching position at New Trier at the time Ravenscraft was a candidate for the coaching post he holds today. “Chris got the teaching job, and I got to welcome him as one of my assistants,” Ravenscraft, still thrilled about the hire, says. “I greatly admired him when I played soccer in high school. He got me focused, pumped me up for games. He continues to be so good in the mental aspects of athletics—at reading a player’s body language, for example, and then coaching him up from there. He’s now a colleague and one of my good friends.” Ravenscraft considers himself the “cultural architect” of his soccer program, and he takes the title seriously. He makes his boys read inspirational books and oversees whip-around sessions, or engaging discussions of the book’s messages after all had formed a circle. Program history means the world to Ravenscraft; he insists his present players know all about the past. “Occasionally I’ll ask our guys, ‘How many state titles has New Trier won?’ ” Ravenscraft says. “And I’ll ask them, ‘When did New Trier win them?’ ” The correct answers: three; and 1974 (a New Trier West squad), 2006, and 2008. “As head coach, it’s important to me to foster a strong sense of program unity and identification,” says Ravenscraft, who guided his disciplined, possessionbased 2019 edition to a 16-2-4 record and a berth in a Class 3A sectional semifinal in the fall. “I want my players, every season, to emerge as excellent problem solvers during games. Any coach, in any sport, should want that. I consider coaching an extension of what I do in the classroom; I love that mindset. “It’s not about wins and losses,” adds Ravenscraft, whose other varsity

assistant coach is Ryan Loris. “It’s about helping our players become better human beings, through soccer. They’re learning life lessons in games and at practices.” In his first season as head coach three years ago, Ravenscraft—a former jumps coach under Trevians varsity boys track and field coach Mark Wukas—introduced “Program Training” to every booter on every team in the New Trier Boys Soccer program. Most sports programs’ levels (freshman, sophomore, JV, and varsity units) typically convene once in the preseason and don’t reunite again until the post-season banquet. “My thinking was, ‘All of our teams should come together more often than that,’ ” Ravenscraft says. “And that’s what we do now … seven, maybe eight, times each season. The captains of all our teams talk. They talk about training, about what they’re focusing on at that point of the season, about upcoming opponents. They’re ideal opportunities for freshmen to interact with varsity players. What does it mean to be a New Trier soccer player? That’s addressed, too, during ‘Program Training’ days. “I have to admit,” the coach adds, “I stole most of that idea from [Wukas]. I saw how well it benefitted the program when I coached [from 201115] track and field with him.” Ravenscraft still talks coaching with New Trier coaches, still pokes his curious head inside offices. The best teachers and coaches never tire of continuing education. Plus all those decorated coaches in the building haven’t retired. But guess what?
