Crafting for a Cause AMERICAN CRAFT EXHIBITION RAISES OVER $1 MILLION FOR NORTHSHORE UNIVERSITY HEALTHSYSTEM EDITED BY DEBBIE LEE THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
The Auxiliary of NorthShore University HealthSystem celebrated the 35th anniversary of its signature fundraiser the American Craft Exhibition (ACE) by raising more than $570,000 during this year’s event. This amount, combined with last year’s total, provides a cumulative $1.13 million benefiting increased access to mental health services at NorthShore through the new Psychiatric Urgent Care Program and Collaborative Care Model. The programs aim to reduce wait times for those in need of urgent psychiatric care and to increase access to these services by making them more readily available through primary care physicians. “The goal of the Psychiatric Urgent Care Program is to efficiently manage patient care and support lower wait times for patients with mental health needs,” explains Frederick Miller, MD, PhD, Chair-

CLUB CREATES BONDS OF FRIENDSHIP ONE RECIPE AT A TIME, PUBLISHES NEW COMMUNITY COOKBOOK. BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
It’s a snowy Thursday night and Shawn Bard’s house is lit up like a film set. Out in front, cars park, doors slam, and clusters of women hurry up the walkway with pots, platters, and trays full of food. Inside, ladies dish and nibble, sipping punch and eggnog as they set up this new rendition of a good oldfashioned potluck buffet. The monthly meeting of the Kenilworth Cookbook Club (KCC) is officially underway. “Food is a great conduit — the perfect common denominator to bring people together,” says Allison McEntee, who started KCC two years ago as a way for Kenilworth residents to get to know each other better. Relocating to Kenilworth from New York in 2017, McEntee enjoyed meeting other moms at the occasional function or mom’s night out at her children’s schools. “But I just felt like I wanted more out of meeting these women. Something fun on a regular basis, that would always be on the schedule. I had a hunch there were others who wanted the same thing.” With a background in marketing for companies such as Nestle, The Food Network, and Tasting Table, McEntee knew she wanted food to be the foundation of her future gettogethers. Her hunch was a good one — the club now has 100 members, with monthly

NEWS KENILWORTH COOKS Cont. from PG 1 and present it with a brief background: a history of the dish, how easy or difficult it was to prepare, and how it was received by previous diners (usually eager family members.) “I hosted the first dinner in August, 2018,” says McEntee. “I picked the Barefoot Contessa’s cookbook and just invited a few women.” From there, McEntee says things took off. “The club is very inclusive—anyone can join. I think it’s grown so fast because people are looking for a way to connect with others in the neighborhood. Food does that, whether it’s high-end gourmet fare, or comfort food.” Tonight’s event is especially festive. The featured cookbook is none other than “Kenilworth Cooks,” the new community cookbook by KCC members featuring favorite family recipes. The book not only creates a record of current Kenilworth tastes, it also raises funds to support the completion of the new Village House at Joseph Sears School. All profits from cookbook sales will go toward that project. “It’s been over 30 years since our community has gathered together to create a cookbook, and we’re excited to bring this to the neighborhood, especially in time for the holidays,” says McEntee. To create the cookbook, KCC formed a committee and solicited club membership for recipe submissions. Next, they gathered, tested, and compiled all of the data through the summer of 2019. Working with the Kenilworth Historical Society, the group studied previous Kenilworth community cookbooks from decades past to view themes and formats. “We wanted something very easy and accessible,” says McEntee. “And as the recipe submissions came in, we saw a really good range of drinks, appetizers, mains, and desserts, with a lot of breakfast, and brunch items. So rather than theme the book around just eggs, or entertaining, or some other narrow focus, we decided to just flow with the submissions.” The panoply of offerings on tonight’s buffet is a diverse reflection of the cookbook. There is Meredith Sullivan’s queso blanco dip, spiked with three kinds of chilies, cumin, and cilantro. Next to that, Leslie Martin’s provolone loaf, a pretty composition of garlic and sundried tomato-accented cheeses with basil and pesto. Among the mains, Shannon Stoelting has brought her namesake “Shannon’s Paella with Kick.” Made with garlicky, saffron-infused Arborio rice, the dish is studded with chicken, chorizo, Andouille sausage, and shrimp. Stephanie Joyce’s peanut butter noodles—flavored with soy sauce, sesame oil, green onion, peanut butter and ginger— are an easy-to-make family favorite. Dessert includes Kath Lyman’s rumspiked bundt cake and Ruth Flaherty’s homemade graham cracker fingers, baked using her pastry chef sister-in-law Megan Campbell’s recipe.

To promote the book, KCC is hosting a holiday cookie exchange at 7 p.m. on December 12 at the Kenilworth Assembly Hall. The event will give guests an opportunity to flex their own baking skills (a contribution of two dozen cookies is required) while picking up a gift-wrapped copy of the community cookbook. “We couldn’t be happier with all of this,” says McEntee. “Our community is really thirsty to create bonds, and this club and cookbook have proven to be a great way to do that.” For tickets to Kenilworth Club Ladies Night: Holiday Cookie Exchange visit lno19.eventbrite. com. Copies of “Kenilworth Cooks” are also available online at kenilworthcookbookclub.com.

SPEND THE WEEKEND AWAY AT A SWISS CHALET ONLY MILES AWAY FROM HOME IN DOWNTOWN CHICAGO. BY KEMMIE RYAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
It’s the most wonderful time of the year and if you’re looking for the perfect staycation in the Chicago area, we’ve found your match. With all of the hustle and bustle of the season, it can be hard to find time to jet away to a Swiss chalet, but Swissôtel in downtown Chicago brings Santa and the Swiss Alps to you. Swissôtel Chicago’s Santa Days begin December 7 and run through December 22, with plenty of activities for the entire family. For the sixth year, the 2,000 square foot Presidential Suite will be transformed into a winter wonderland and Santa’s home away from the North Pole. New this year, the Santa Suite will don a Swiss theme, complete with a chair lift up the “mountain.” Once you’ve checked in to one of the elfdecorated suites, grab your wish list and head to the Santa Suite. Inside, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to capture photos with The Big Guy or in front of one of sixteen snow-covered Christmas trees. Then sip on hot chocolate and nibble on gourmet treats, like gingersnap eggnog frosting sandwiches and red velvet cheesecake truffles. The festive suite will also boast an array of activities for the littlest members of your family, including a special mailbox for your letters to Santa. After your visit with Santa, head downstairs to The Palm for dinner. The restaurant was renovated in 2018 and features the same stunning views found throughout the hotel, a family-friendly atmosphere, and exquisite food. Whether you’re in the mood for traditional Italian cuisine, handselected chops, or Nova Scotia lobster, the menu is sure to please your taste buds. Be sure to try one of The Palm’s signature cocktails to compliment your meal. If you prefer a more casual dining option, Amuse, located in the lobby lodge, offers seasonal small plates and cocktails in a cozy environment. Guests can enjoy a special fondue menu and winter cocktails, like the Thyme of the Season (Suntory Toki Whiskey, Grand Marnier, fresh grapefruit juice and honey), through December 21. If you’re looking for an adults-only night out, Après Ski After Dark is the newest festive fête at Swissôtel. On December 13 and 20, guests 21 years and older are invited PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF SWISSÔTEL CHICAGO back to the Santa Suite for a

You won’t even need to switch out of your pajamas for the special holiday breakfast with Santa. The hotel is also offering special overnight accommodations like the Trees of Hope Package, which includes a donation to SOS Children’s Villages of Illinois and access to the Santa Suite. It’s the perfect opportunity to indulge while spreading holiday cheer.

It All Adds Up LFHS GIRLS BASKETBALL SQUAD POISED FOR MORE GLORY AFTER 5-0 START. BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
That mad-about-basketball math department at Lake Forest was “sum”-thing else last winter. A good chunk of its faculty members—about half, according to math teacher Kyle Wilhelm — showed up faithfully and enthusiastically during the historic playoff run to the Elite Eight by the school’s girls basketball program in February. “The math teachers sat together in the stands for our games,” Scouts junior guard Finola Summerville remembers. “It was their section.” But they weren’t there just to support colleague Wilhelm, who doubles as the school’s head girls hoops coach. They, like the rest of the school and the community, couldn’t get enough of a squad that captured the program’s first sectional championship. Only eventual Class 4A state champion Maine West High School beat LFHS in the postseason, and that came in a supersectional. All but eight teams in 4A had been eliminated in Illinois at that point in the playoffs. The Scouts finished with a 27-8 record in Wilhelm’s eighth season.
All of the girls genuinely enjoy being around each other. And so many of my players are athletes—highly

But individual stats mean little to Douglass. Wins matter to her. So does making sure her teammates get involved—and when they’re active, and engaged, they produce. The evidence: Summerville, a 6-footer, poured in 17 points, to go with her 11 rebounds, in an impressive 60-30 win over Sycamore High School on Nov. 25; junior guard Molly Fisher netted 17 points in the Elk Grove game; 5-11 forward Lilly Trkla struck for 17 points in the Sycamore team; and freshman guard Bella Ranallo scored 12 points in her varsity debut, helping the Scouts down Vernon Hills’ Cougars 51-36 in the season opener for both schools on November 18. “This team,” Wilhelm says, “is one of the most selfless groups I’ve ever coached. All of the girls genuinely enjoy being around each other. And so many of my players are athletes—highly competitive, multisport athletes. “What’s also exciting is the strong core that returned,” adds Wilhelm, who grew up in Mundelein and played basketball for four seasons at Monmouth College. “It’s a core with several players capable of scoring in the post and then dribbling and making a three-pointer in our next possession.”

NOTABLE: How stifling was Lake Forest High School’s defense at the Vernon Hills Tournament last month? It held two teams to 12 points or fewer. The Scouts’ average margin of victory in their five wins was a resounding 55-24. … LFHS was scheduled to open North Suburban Conference action against visiting and reigning conference champion Libertyville HS on December 3. … Halle Douglass participated in the Shoot the Puck contest in between the second and third periods of LF’s annual Pucks and Poms boys hockey game/fundraiser on November 27. One of her shots entered an opening—picture the space of a mouse’s home entrance in a wall—at the bottom of a goal covering. Because of that successful shot, a donation of $250 was made to the Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association on behalf of the LFHS girls basketball program. “No, not in the least,” a smiling Wilhelm said, referring to being worried about the prospect of Douglass ditching her sneakers and skating for a hockey team from now until March. … Trkla, on first-year volunteer assistant coach Billy Douglass: “He’s a basketball junkie, intense, always helpful with his comments and tips when we practice.” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

LFC Music Professor Meyer has mastered the art of listening BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
Don Meyer’s phone rang. The Lake Forest College music professor was an exhausted, overwhelmed first-year graduate student at the UC Davis, when he picked up the receiver in the Era Before Cell Phones and heard his father’s voice. John Meyer wanted to know how the youngest of his four children was doing. “I was in over my head,” Don Meyer, 53, recalls inside LFC’s Reid Hall on Thanksgiving Eve. “School was super intense. I wasn’t really sleeping; so much work. When I spoke to my father on the phone that day, I pretended all was well. But he knew otherwise. He sensed it, heard something in my voice that concerned him.” The father drove to the campus and had dinner with his son. They talked. They listened to each other. Don Meyer breathed again, finally. “My father did not give me any advice while we ate,” says Meyer, whose father died two years ago. “He felt I needed a break, and he was right. Our time together that night helped me. He was aware because he was a good listener.” A good listen is the CD “Selections from Khalil Gibran’s ‘The Prophet.’ ” Meyer composed original music for the unique work of art—billed as “an evocative setting of Gibran’s 1923 masterpiece with a blending of live and electronic instruments”—and produced it with several of his students at LFC and at Dustin Bennett Studios, Lake Forest. “It’s a strange little book,” says Meyer, a professor at LFC since 1995 and a Highland Park resident since 2001. “The short novel tells a story of a religious figure who is about to leave town. The residents of the town want answers to their questions about life, love, marriage, pain, and other topics, before he leaves. They want to hear his wisdom. The sayings are thoughtful and positive. “I like composing and collaborating with people. I’ve worked with artists, poets, writers. Now, with this CD, you could say I’ve collaborated with somebody who’s dead.” The CD’s sixth track addresses joy and sorrow. “Your joy,” the narrator, LFC senior Fernand ben Qvyjt, begins, “is your sorrow unmasked … the deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.” The CD’s 10th track reflects on pain. “Your pain,” Qvyjt continues, “is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.” “What that says to me,” Meyer notes, “is, learn about your pain—the physical kind, as well as the emotional kind. Pay attention to your pain. What is it telling you?” The seed of the project, planted last January, was

Don Meyer
Meyer’s yearning to offset the negativity and stress in today’s world. Meyer didn’t just serve as composer of the CD; he also played the synthesizer. “The CD reveals important, thought-provoking messages,” Meyer says. “Messages, I believe, people should hear, accompanied by our music. People are not listening to one another as they should in our current age. I love the process of mixing sounds together, and what I find exciting about composing music is, you never know how it’s going to make people feel. “I hoped, after we had performed ‘The Prophet’ selections at a concert at the college [on November 21], that people left feeling calm, and at peace.” Some 12 years ago, Meyer’s History of Rock class at LFC was abuzz when student Chelsea Tallarico’s father entered the classroom one day. Tallarico’s father had asked Tallarico to ask Meyer for permission to audit the class for a day. Meyer granted it. Chelsea’s father is Steven Tyler. Yes, that Steven Tyler. Of the rock band Aerosmith. “That was wild,” recalls Meyer, who believes Ike Turner’s “Rocket 88,” heard first in 1952, was the first single of the rock genre. “Steven Tyler sang in front of my students. He then answered questions. He wanted to be a full-on rock star, and he started singing at a dive bar in Boston. His big thing was, ‘Fake it ’til you make it.’ ” Make music … as much as possible. That was Norma Meyer’s creed during son Don’s formative years in northern California. It still is. Don’s mother taught music at an elementary school. Today she plays the accordion and serves as director of the bell choir at a Presbyterian church. “A very generous person, my mother, with such a good ear for music,” says Meyer, who also knows how to play the piano, baritone horn, tuba, guitar, bass, ukulele, and banjo. “My mother’s philosophy, in music, is, ‘It doesn’t matter how good the music is; keep making it.’ “That’s my philosophy, too.” Meyer’s courtship with his future wife, viol teacher Liz, began when both were freshmen at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Their first date? Liz asked Don out. They watched the movie “Risky Business” on campus and then walked along a beach. They are the parents of Zachary, 26, and Zoe, 22. Another of Meyer’s areas of study is film music. It fascinates and stirs him. There are reasons Alfred
| SATURDAY DECEMBER 7 | SUNDAY DECEMBER 8 2019
Hitchcock’s “Psycho” features heavy doses of violin music. “That instrument,” Meyer says, “makes music that sounds like a human voice more than any other instrument does. It represents emotions. You’d think music, created by a violin, wouldn’t work in a horror movie like that, in a movie with violence. But it does, because at certain points in the movie, the violin is played abrasively—and every abrupt tempo increase makes a viewer’s heart rate increase.”
I’ve worked with artists, poets, writers. Now, with this CD, you could say I’ve collaborated with somebody who’s dead.
Meyer, on the soundtrack in Hitchcock’s “Vertigo”: “The music goes way up and way down, suddenly, throughout the movie. And that gives audience members a dizzying sensation; they feel disoriented and unsettled. That movie wouldn’t have been half as good as it turned out to be without that choice of music.” What continues to move Meyer today is the noble profession of teaching. A top-notch teacher’s top three traits, in no particular order: empathy, empathy, empathy. Part of Meyer’s job is to lecture. But a bigger part of his calling has nothing to do with vocalizing. And everything to do with empathy’s critical partner. “Listening … it’s crucial in what I do in and out of the classroom, and it’s an ability I developed through music,” Meyer says. “It seems contradictory, doesn’t it? You’d think being a professor is all about talking in front of a classroom or doing most of the talking when a student visits a professor’s office. “Well,” he sums, “it’s not.” Visit store.cdbaby.com/cd/donmeyer3 to purchase the CD “Selections from Kahlil Gibran’s ‘The Prophet.’ ” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
