When one North Shore family decided they loved their Winnetka location so much that they would rather renovate than move, they turned to Lake Bluff ’s Lynch Construction Corp. to turn their current house into their forever home. “We have worked with this family over the
past several years,” explains Jeff Lynch, owner and founder of Lynch Construction—a fullservice firm specializing in residential construction, home remodeling, historic renovation, home maintenance, and cabinetry design. “These clients were service customers, who we had helped with a number of home maintenance projects. I know we won the competitive bid for this major renovation on their house because of our working relationship.” The initial project was to install new floors on the first floor, add a new kitchen and family
room, and remodel the master suite and addition for the master bath in a home built in the 1950s. “While working with architect Paul Konstant and designer Soucie Horner, the project crept in scope and doubled in size,” Jeff explains, detailing how they went on to shore up the structure of the house, install new plumbing and electrical throughout, add a third floor, and address its primary challenge—water issues caused by its proximity to a floodplain. Pino called many of his clients to check on them and their families. He tells each of them now that they will still hear from him sometime after he retires.
In treating their clients like family, they’ve laughed at jokes, listened and told personal stories, discussed Italian food, wine, and where to go for dinner, shared milestones and traditions with families, and cried at the loss of those who were close to them. “When Jeff is working with an architect or homeowner, they look to him for his expertise on difficult issues,” says Jeff ’s wife, Joan, who handles the business operations for Lynch Construction. “Jeff knows how to look at existing conditions and make things work and make them happen seamlessly. This is where we shine. We never want anyone to walk into one of our projects and say, ‘nice addition.’ Our goal is to make it look like the renovation was original to the home’s design.” No design elements were sacrificed for functionality on this project, a house that incorporated a number of high-end finishes. A perfect example of this would be the state-of-the-art pergola off the family room. “Maximizing the home’s entertaining space was very important to this family,” adds Jeff. “They were interested in having a pergola that would be functional for more than just one season in Chicago. After a great deal of research, we landed on a structure that exceeded the clients’ expectations. It gave the homeowner the aesthetic they wanted and the flexibility they were seeking. Using a remote control, the homeowners can seal its roof, enclose it with screens, turn on heaters, and switch on LED lights and surround sound. It took some back and forth to get the piece delivered and to work the way it should, but the results were worth it.” This attention to detail is also seen in the exquisite carpentry of the cabinets installed in the kitchen, butler’s pantry, mudroom, and throughout the house. “Our cabinet shop can create almost anything,” says Joan. “If a homeowner doesn’t see something they like online or in a catalog, we can build it for them.” The homeowners were so pleased with the initial
renovations to their first floor that they retained Jeff and the team to rework the bedrooms, bathrooms, and laundry room on the second floor, and then to remove the roof and add two more bed-
rooms and a bathroom to a third floor. “As the project unfolded, the homeowners were determined to repair all of the house’s other issues,” Jeff explains. “Things didn’t happen in the order
they would have had we started the project knowing everything we were going to do. But we were lucky that the family wasn’t living in the home while the work was underway.”
ABOVE: Master bath LEFT: New laundry room While Lynch had managed the water and flooding issues during construction, when the project was nearly finished, the homeowner decided to have the basement water problems fully resolved. “All of the construction and decorating was near complete when we got the call to get the water problem fixed once and for all,” says Joan with a laugh. “It was early spring, and we literally had to pump water and sand out of the basement windows so we didn’t disturb any of the work we had just finished on the upper levels. It was a challenge.” The best part of this project, in addition to creating a beautiful home its owners absolutely love in a location they’re committed to, the family was able to move back in just before the pandemic. “The homeowners say that the renovation was a lifesaver in more ways than one,” says Joan, mentioning that the family was also able to have their swimming pool finished in time for them to enjoy the summer. “This has been a very trying time for all businesses,” Joan adds. “We’ve been fortunate, that people are investing in their living spaces because this is where they are spending all of their time. We’ve been able to continue working and we’ve implemented all of the necessary protocols to keep our homeowners and team members safe. LIGHTACULAR SPECTACULAR KOHL CHILDREN’S MUSEUM DEBUTS ITS INTERACTIVE OUTDOOR HOLIDAY LIGHT DISPLAY. EDITED BY KEMMIE RYAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
A new holiday light show is here! The first holiday show designed specifically for children debuted at Kohl Children’s Museum on Friday, December 4. Kohlights: A Mesmertastic Holiday Lightacular features thousands of interactive holiday lights spread over the Museum’s two-acre outdoor Habitat Park. Keeping social distancing and safety in mind, the exhibits encourage children to learn through play by changing colors, patterns, and motions of the lights in interactive stations. All stations have “no-touch” activation, with children either manipulating displays with their bodies through thermal sensors or by using individual glow sticks provided at check-in to control the lights. The museum is also using limited timed entry to the one-way path to allow distance between groups. Staff will also be stationed along the trail to assist with social distancing and ensure the exhibits are clean. “The scale of Habitat Park makes for a manageable, contained, and most of all, safe experience,” says Mike Delfini, President and CEO of Kohl Children’s Museum. “Our goal is to give families who are weary of remote learning and COVID-19 fatigue an opportunity to explore and play as a family unit.” The Kohlights display was created specifically

Both companies have also produced the Illumination: Tree Lights display at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle. Hailey Featherstone was the lead concept designer to help infuse a visually enchanting event with the playful learning experience the Museum is renowned for. “Our members tell us they want and need some normalcy for their families,” adds Delfini. “Particularly during the holidays, interest in safe, outdoor events is high and we are confident that families
will respond positively to this highly interactive and colorful presentation.” Among the displays are interactive elements that include: • Pixel Play Meadow: Thermal sensors read body heat of passing guests and project them onto a sea of lights in the Children’s Meadow in the park. Children will see their movements reflected in the changing light patterns. • Rainbow Arbor: Children can use glow sticks to turn a color wheel that will change lights on trees
in the park’s courtyard along the color spectrum. • Color Play: A grove of trees are decked with lights whose colors are controlled by button stations along the path. Children can press buttons to change the hues on these trees, which include low branches for easy viewing. • Rainbow Caterpillar: Another color wheel allows children to propel patterns of lights that wind up and down lighting fixtures on the park’s Rolling Hill, mimicking a caterpillar’s movement. • Color Square Walk: A moving rainbow path of colors leads to the Lightacular’s exit, letting children choose a color and follow it to the end of the path. • Lighted Art Installation: Children can choose to deposit their glow sticks into one of hundreds of recyclable plastic bottles, forming a collaborative glowing artwork. Kohlights joins the Museum’s already-existing V.I.P. (Very Important Play) sessions in the Museum’s collection of COVID-19-aware offerings, including the popular Thomas & Friends™: Explore the Rails! exhibit. The outdoor experience and holiday walk will be previewed this weekend before opening on select days from Friday, December 11, through Sunday, January 3. Advance reservations are required, and tickets are $25 per person for adults and children. Kohl Children’s Museum members may purchase at a discounted rate of $20 per person. Chloé Mendel recalls after-school walks home along the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where she grew up, and fond memories of her regular visits to her father’s J. Mendel workroom, located just next door to their residence. As a young girl, Mendel was captivated by the trade and traditions of the generations of furriers in her family. Fast-forward, and today she is in the process of building her own legacy that not only sustains those techniques passed down but makes sustainability the very focus of the brand. Maison Atia produces faux fur clothing and accessories from couture and ready-to-wear, to a newer line called MA by Maison Atia and fabricated from plants and recycled plastic with a zerowaste policy. While Mendel’s New York City roots
duo had a capsule collection that debuted in 2017, and soon an impressive national retail market followed. Now available at small exclusive shops including Winnetka’s neapolitan, and larger highend department store venues such as Neiman Marcus, the pair also hosted a Maison Atia standalone pop-up boutique on Madison Avenue last fall. Pieces from Mendel’s Classic Collection were at The Lake Forest Shop this week with a trunk show that ends today, December 5. Ellen Stirling, owner of The Lake Forest Shop, will join her at the store from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for a meet and greet and Insider Couture discussion. “Fur is such a luxurious medium,” says Mendel, “but you need big investors, as a sable coat, for example, can cost up to half a million dollars. We wanted a product applying the same craftsmanship and care with more accessibility and affordability.” Full-length and mid-waist coats, sweaters, vests, handbags, hair accessories, shoes, and a host of other garments may be accented on collars, cuffs, and pocket squares, or allover detailed in a fur-like material. To the touch it is just as soft and luxurious as the real thing, yet easy to spotclean with soap and water and without the same cost or controversy. “We noticed a gap in marketplace,” comments Mendel, “women of all ages needed an alternative and also another vernacular for fur.” That ingenuity has enabled the company to branch out in a multitude of directions. In 2019, they introduced the label MA by Maison Atia, with a more reasonable price point for outerwear made from Koba, composed of corn by-product and repurposed materials. More recently, the “Zoom dress” premiered as an easy-go-to A-line shortsleeve ruffled sheath available in two color variations and perfect for work-

The anatomy of the twins’ path to lifelong relationships with their sports heroes began with the siblings’ thumbs. Carl and Tony Ruzicka—now 71-year-old brothers, Yale University and University of Chicago Booth School of Business graduates, and retired accountants—used the digits to ring athletes’ doorbells in their hometown of Cicero and nearby Berwyn. They did it decades ago, in a bygone era when a Chicago Bear or a Chicago Blackhawk was as accessible as a friendly neighbor with a working lawnmower or a cup of sugar. They relied on gumption, too, when they were 11 years old. “In 1960 we saw a picture of Chicago Bears defensive tackle Bill Bishop in the local paper and read that he lived in Cicero,” recalls Carl Ruzicka, who lived in Highland Park from 1984 to 2017, before moving to the South Loop with his wife, Qian Yi. “So we looked him up in the

But we ended up spending nearly an hour with him and getting to know him. “We discovered Bill and all these other great Chicago athletes were regular people. You can be famous and a meat-and-potatoes guy at the same time.” That story essentially kicks off the pair’s debut book, The Twins: A Journey of a Lifetime, published in September. They also formed a tight bond with genial Blackhawks forward Chico Maki (a Hawk from 1960 to1976), interacting with him and his wife in the couple’s attic, and they even battled in touch football games with Hall of Fame centerman Phil Esposito, who played for the Blackhawks from 1963 to 1967. “The good ol’ days—we tried to capture those simpler times to let readers know what it was like back then,” Carl notes. “We were fortunate to have grown up when we did. For the book, we settled on the concept of a journey and how

They ended up toiling joyfully for the franchise during their Morton East High School years, including the Bears’ 1963 NFL championship season. “My job was to take care of the players on the sideline, help them with anything they needed on the bench,” Carl says. “Tony ran around with extra footballs and would often kneel (on one leg) alongside George Halas, who’d also kneel, near the field. George would use Tony’s left shoulder to help him stand up after plays.” The twins stood together in the summer of 2005 to applaud Chicago Cubs great Ryne Sandberg at his National Baseball Hall of Fame induction in Cooperstown, New York. The former Gold Glove second baseman had fun with the 5-foot-5 brothers back then, nicknaming them “Twin Towers.” They accompanied longtime Cubs clubhouse manager Yosh Kawano to the Hall of Fame ceremony. The twins first met Kawano in the 1960s, when they were Bears clubhouse boys at Wrigley Field, the football team’s home facility before Soldier Field, and Kawano— sporting his trademark white, floppy fishing hat— was busy getting the quarters ready for the baseball season. “ We lost touch with Yosh after our high school years, but we saw him along the Wrigley Field concourse one day in the 1990s,” Tony says. “He

That was our first mission together as Bears fans.” Carl and Tony got on their bikes and wheeled to the professional athlete’s house. One rang the doorbell. Bishop’s wife, Marilyn, opened the door. “Does Bill Bishop live here?” the twins chimed. The wide-eyed kids entered the house, and before they knew it, they were in the Bear’s den, flipping the pages of Bill Bishop’s scrapbook with Bill Bishop himself.

everything fell into place for us. Countless friends had suggested we write such a book. Those friends would hear us tell a story about a Chicago athlete to a group and then urge us to tell another story about this athlete or that athlete.” Perhaps the best story in the book is about the twins’ connection to National Football League founder and former Chicago Bears coach George Halas. None other than Marilyn Bishop had suggested the twins write a letter to Halas

remembered us. Wonderful, wonderful man. He knew everybody.”

“Yosh,” Carl adds, “knew Ted Williams, Stan Musial, golfer Raymond Floyd, Frank Sinatra, and so many other famous people. Such a loyal friend to many.” Kawano worked for the Cubs until the age of 85 and died at 97 in 2018. The Ruzickas are diehard Cubs fans. Their first sports hero was “Mr. Cub,” Hall of Famer Ernie Banks, and they’re still elated about the Cubs’ 2016 World Series championship, which broke a 108-year-old title drought. Another significant theme that courses through the book is running. The twins ran distance races for track teams in high school and competed as runners at Yale, where a man named Frank Shorter also suited up for the Bulldogs’ track and field squads. Shorter was a junior at the Ivy League school when the twins matriculated in New Haven, Connecticut. All Shorter did was win the gold medal in the men’s marathon at the 1972 Summer Olympics. And he and the twins are still good friends. Tony and Carl Ruzicka served as integral committee members of Chicago’s first marathon in 1977. They also introduced and guided the event’s first-ever charity pledge program. “Developing sport skills led to simply wanting to always get better,” the 73-year-old Shorter says in the last chapter of the twins’ book. “Eventually, in what I would term a ‘Ruzicka Twins Direct Response,’ they tracked down their sports heroes, walking up to them to introduce themselves and then ask questions. “Being twins,” adds the 1969 NCAA national champion in the six-mile run, “got them in the door, but it was their combined talent that always seemed to allow them to stay there and never be shown out.” The Ruzickas’ book, The Twins: A Journey of a Lifetime, is available on amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com. HIS EXELON-CY EXELON CHIEF INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY OFFICER CHRIS GOULD IS REVVED UP ABOUT THE COMPANY’S JOINT INITIATIVE. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
Chris Gould’s father, Alan, posed a question to his son more than three years ago: “What are you doing in February 2018?” “Why?” Chris asked. “I’d like you to join me on a vacation,” the father replied. “Would love to, Dad,” Chris said. “Where?” “South,” Alan said. “Far, far south.” The son immediately thought about packing swim trunks and sunblock and sandals—until his father got specific. “We’re going to Antarctica, son.” “He got me,” recalls Chris Gould, now 49 and in his 10th year as chief innovation and sustainability officer at the energy company Exelon, headquartered in Chicago. En route to the ice-covered continent, the Goulds—Chris’ older brother, Bruce, also got invited—enjoyed time in South America, one of only two continents Chris Gould hadn’t visited in his life. He’d never been to Antarctica, either, so setting foot there and eyeballing an iceberg the size of Aruba would give him the distinction of having toured all seven continents at least once. “To mark the occasion, I took a polar plunge off a cruise ship,” recounts Gould, who lives in Wilmette with his wife, Yana, and their three children (New Trier High School junior Zachary; Maya, 11; and Ady, 7). “February down there is summertime, with temperatures in the 30s, maybe low 40s. It was windy the day I dove. I had a rope on me. “And, as I plummeted, I formed my body into the shape of the number seven.” But Gould has been soaring stateside lately, mostly because he’s thrilled about the $20 million Exelon Foundation/ Exelon Corporation Climate Change Investment Initiative, or 2c2i for short. Launched in September 2019, the joint endeavor cultivates startups working on new technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change in six cities: Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Wilmington, Delaware. “Most foundations give one-time grants to organizations,” says Gould, a futurist and a man fueled by curiosity. “Our awards aren’t grants; they’re investments and philanthropic in nature, and we’re getting behind ventures that go far beyond energy. We consider it a blend of philanthropy and impact investing, with an emphasis

on supporting underserved communities and minority- and women-owned startups.” More than 120 companies applied for an award in 2c2i’s first year, and the Exelon Foundation invited 28 of them to pitch events at four designated cities. Ten emerged as winners, including Chicago-based Greenprint Partners, a corporation that works with water utilities and landowners to design, build, finance, and maintain highimpact green stormwater infrastructure programs that reduce water pollution and flooding. Another Year 1 Cohort recipient was Bostonbased startup New Ecology, which has offices in Baltimore and Wilmington. New Ecology has developed a remote monitoring and optimization (ReMO) system to improve performance of buildings with central boilers. On November 7, a day after Atlantic City’s 2020 2c2i pitch day—held virtually because of the pandemic—Gould delivered a presentation on global warming to a group of Northwestern University students. “It’s a busy time right now, but it’s also an exciting time,” Gould says. Gould grew up on a farm located 90 minutes west of Pittsburgh and crossed the border to attend Catholic Central High School in Steubenville, Ohio, home of the Crusaders. “I might as well have been from Mars to most of the students who lived in Ohio,” Gould says. But the invader from “The Keystone State” endeared himself to his classmates, so much so that he won the election for CCHS senior class secretary by a landslide. “My best friend told me he had nominated me to run for the position,” Gould says, adding the runner-up in the election was another good friend. “My first reaction was, ‘You did what?’ Then he assured me I’d win because I had the best campaign slogan. I asked him, ‘What’s my slogan?’” His best f riend had chosen “Go for the Gould.” Gould didn’t take the responsibility of holding office lightly. He considered it an honor to represent his class and work closely with the school’s administration. “My role wasn’t just to keep records as secretary,” he says. “I also looked at it as having a seat at the table and advancing important conversations.” Gould enrolled at Penn State University and earned a degree in civil and environmental engineering. For the next five years, he worked as an environmental engineer, toiling and designing groundwater treatment plants on former U.S. Air Force bases, including one in San Bernardino, California. “It was an exciting, great time, working outside often and building things, as well

as cleaning up the water,” Gould says. “I grew up working on our farm, with my dad serving as my boss for years. That was my full-time job. My father valued hard work and patience. My mom, Florence, she was big on emphasizing education, on reminding me to be diligent in the classroom.”

The University of Pittsburgh was Gould’s next stop in academia. He collected his MBA there, adding invaluable assets to his professional arsenal through coursework at the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business. “I had started to realize it would be important to have a business side, to have a better understanding of economics and finance in order to be more impactful in my career,” Gould says. “I wanted to recognize and utilize the language of business and finance.” Gould joined Exelon 20 years ago and has been its chief innovation and sustainability officer for a little more than 10 years. But enough about work. Anything that has to do with family heartens Gould. Daily. And, with Dad Gould working from home now more than ever, he’s never more than a handful of footsteps away from interacting with any of his three children Monday through Friday. “Yes, they hear me when I’m working,” says Gould, who has “planted stuff ” with his offspring at Centennial Park Community Gardens in Wilmette and observed each observe and learn at one of the village’s park district plots. “I sense they’re interested in what I do for a living. So much about fatherhood is setting an example for your children.
