Homes for the Holidays LAKE BLUFF HISTORY MUSEUM’S 9TH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS HOME TOUR IS A FESTIVE WAY TO KICK OFF THE SEASON. EDITED BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Like the classic holiday ballet, The Nutcracker, which transports viewers through a sequence of fantasy worlds, the Lake Bluff History Museum’s Christmas Home Tour takes visitors all over the architectural map. The tour includes several historically significant homes, including a stone gatehouse built in 1925 on the grounds of one of the village’s most notable estates; a circa 1905 Queen Anne home that was commissioned by a major player in the vaudeville circuit who went on to found one of Hollywood’s Big Five movie studios; and a beautifully renovated circa 1955 farmhouse that has a totally unexpected interior, with rooms that radiate from a circular atrium, floor-to-ceiling paintings covering black lacquered walls, and interior décor that includes a mixture of velvets, antiques and custom-scene wallpaper. A recently built home that was on the tour a few years ago returns in 2019 to Continued on PG 10

WITH A SECOND GENERATION ON BOARD, FOREST BOOTERY CELEBRATES A SENSATIONAL 70 YEARS IN BUSINESS. BY ANN MARIE SCHEIDLER THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
When sisters Cristina and Cara Garrison invited their father to breakfast at Highland Park’s Country Kitchen more than 20 years ago to discuss taking over running his Forest Bootery store, they had no idea they’d be at the helm when the Lake Forest icon celebrated its 70th anniversary. “I can tell you straight that we didn’t see this coming,” says Cara with a laugh. “In fact, if it weren’t for my husband—who was my boyfriend at the time—pushing Cristina and I to give the business a go and continue the legacy, who knows what might have happened.” Cristina and Cara acquired Forest Bootery from their father in 1996, a long-standing business he purchased two decades earlier (that had opened in 1949). “My dad had part ownership in a shoe store in Yorktown (in the Western Suburbs),” Cara says. “He realized he wanted to have his own business and began to travel around to see what might be available in different suburbs. When he arrived in Lake Forest, he knew the business had to be here.” Outbidding an offer on the table, Paul Garrison purchased one of the two local shoe stores in Lake Forest at the time and renamed it the Forest Bootery. “I remember my mom sitting at the kitchen table tracing rolls of masking tape to create the logo that we still use for the store today,” Cara says. While Cristina and Cara both worked at the Forest Booter y growing up, they didn’t set out to follow in their father’s footsteps.

NEWS IF THE SHOW FITS Cont. from PG 1 “Cristina went to school for fashion merchandising and I wanted an art degree,” Cara says. “It wasn’t easy working at the store. Dad’s sales staff was made up of serious shoe guys who had a set way of doing things. I still remember the day my register was off by one penny and the store manager was very upset. So, I quit. It’s kind of funny how things come full circle.” Without hesitation, Paul ultimately agreed to sell the business to his daughters. At the weekly sales meeting following their memorable Country Kitchen breakfast, Paul introduced the sisters to the sales team as their new bosses without any warning. “And then he left the meeting,” says Cara. “Cristina and I had no idea what to say or what to do, but we figured it out.” Not surprised by their father’s “sink or swim approach,” Cristina and Cara dug right in. It’s one of the many reasons Lake Bluff is the very best!” This is the ninth year LBHM has hosted its Christmas home tour, a creative endeavor. Funds raised from the tour support the museum’s efforts to digitize its entire collection and mount new exhibits every year, such as the recent “Made in Lake Bluff,” and “A Century of Weddings” exhibits, and an upcoming exhibit on Lake Bluff ’s gem: “Lake Michigan.” Over the years, homeowners who have opened their dwellings to the public for the tour have done so to support the work of the

We wanted to give our customers a chance for a one-stop-shop of clothes, shoes, and accessories.” On the flip side, Cristina and Cara have enjoyed supporting young fashion designers before the national chains discovered them. “It’s been fantastic to watch brands like Jon Josef go on to be a huge business, knowing that we had them when no one else did,” says Cara. While the future is never certain, Cristina and Cara do see potential for their own children to one day take over the business. “We definitely have that sales gene in our family,” Cara says, who loves watching her high school-aged daughter, Cleo, and her niece, Pia, work at the Lake Forest location on Sundays. “We call them our Sunday dynamo. They might be quiet and shy at home, but they have this confidence that comes out on the store floor.” As the sisters celebrate 70 years of hard work this month, they believe there could be 70 more if they keep some of their father’s adages close to heart. “Dad’s mantra was to always treat your customers right and to always try to have what they are looking for,” Cara says. “At (Left) Mort Gibbion is shown in the store around the time he sold this point, so many of our customers have it to Paul and Diane Garrison. NORTH SHORE FOODIE
SECRET CULINARY GEM WINNETKA RESTAURANT FAVORITE LITTLE RICKY’S CONTINUES TO EVOLVE BEYOND ITS REPUTATION AS A “RIB JOINT.” WITH CHEF INDA CRUZ BACK IN THE KITCHEN AS A PARTNER, THE MENU IS MORE INSPIRED THAN EVER—FEATURING DELICIOUS HOMEMADE SAUCES AND FIVE STAR CREATIONS IN A RELAXED, NEIGHBORHOOD SETTING. BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
When beloved North Shore restaurateur Patrick O’Neil opened Little Ricky’s in Winnetka 18 years ago, the vision was to create a corner gathering place where friends and neighbors could come together in a stylish but relaxing environment to enjoy fine food and drink. It would have the same “everybody knows your name” kind of vibe as the famous watering hole on Cheers, but with a menu that elevates the concept of the American bar and grill. And while Little Ricky’s immediately established a reputation as a go-to spot for the best ribs in town, even in 2002, restaurant veteran O’Neil knew he wanted it to be more than that. Today, with Chef Inda Cruz back in the kitchen after a two-month hiatus, Little Ricky’s is poised to compete with some of the most upscale eateries in the area (including O’Neil’s own Trifecta, located just down the street in Winnetka). As the website proclaims,“we are much more than a rib joint.” And oh, are they ever. A recent Sunday visit was a culinary delight, with a tasting menu of some of Cruz’s original creations—many that began as daily specials that sold out so fast they were added to the permanent menu. One of the most popular appetizers is Cruz’s Bang Bang Shrimp, an inventive juxtaposition of breaded flash fried shrimp served over roasted tomatoes and yellow teardrop peppers. The shrimps’flavors shine on their own but a delicate line of Sweet Sriracha Chili Sauce adds the irresistible “bang.”
The salad selection is beyond impressive. Not to be content with the de rigeur Cobb or Caesar (both still delicious with house-made dressings), there are literally a dozen salad options to choose from. Our favorites were the Chicken Milanese (Parmesan and panko crusted chicken over a bed of mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, red

onion, roasted corn, avocado with Cruz’s Chipotle vinaigrette) and the Blackened Ahi Tuna Salad (which pairs pan-seared Ahi tuna with mixed greens, red and green peppers, mandarin oranges, cherry tomatoes, homemade citrus dressing, and wonton strips for just the right crunch). Other enticing one-of-a-kind salad choices included The Winnetka (think grilled chicken with spinach, green beans, roasted corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, feta cheese, and a yummy creamy Tarragon dressing); Lucy’s Shrimp
that we haven’t even tasted the fall-off-the-bone ribs). “There is always something new,” says Cruz, a selftaught chef who got his start in the restaurant industry at O’Neils in Hubbard Woods 18 years ago.“I have come to know what people like and always put on new specials. We like to change items at least two times a week. And if they like it, I will add it to the menu.” This creativity and passion for the next great recipe is what sets Little Ricky’s apart from other North Shore
Cafe (a gluten-free option that tosses grilled shrimp with spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, avocado, pine nuts, goat cheese, cucumbers, carrots, and balsamic vinaigrette); and the Asian Chicken Salad (grilled chicken tops mixed greens, cabbage, water chestnuts, Mandarin oranges, onions, peapods, green and red peppers, orange citrus dressing and wonton strips for the crunch). By the time you get to the sandwiches and entrees, you might be tempted to skip straight to dessert (spoiler alert that Cruz’s chocolate homemade brownie is to die for). But don’t ...there’s so much more to come (and notice
restaurants. On the sandwich menu, for example, among the more expected burger, pulled pork, and house-smoked brisket slider options, Cruz’s offerings include the Mongo Bong Roll-Up (grilled barbecue chicken with avocado, tomatoes, lettuce and blue cheese dressing in a flour tortilla); a Blackened Chicken Burrito (blackened chicken, black beans, chihuahua cheese, pica de gallo, Spanish rice, and lettuce in a flour tortilla, served with salsa, guacamole, and sour cream); and the JBLTA (an inspired combo of jalapeno, bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and Chipotle aioli on sourdough ... yum). If that wasn’t enough, now it’s time for the main course. This is where the menu truly shines and transforms the dining experience to high-end bar and grill to five-star cuisine. The BBQ Baby Back Ribs are there, along with a BBQ Half Chicken, but the entree choice is not so easy

with some of Cruz’s other creations tempting the palate. Our two favorites were the Chicken Limone (sauteed chicken breast topped with a delicate,house-made lemon sauce) and the Chipotle Glazed Salmon (a pan-seared salmon fillet is gently coated in a sweet and tangy Chipotle glaze, paired with a sweet potato mash). Cruz says his personal favorite is the Skirt Steak, marinated to perfection, topped with pico de gallo, and served with the side of your choice. Our tasting seconded that recommendation, especially with Cruz’s special homemade mac and cheese on the side. There is also a Chicken Marsala dish on the menu that tops a sauteed chicken breast with a mushroom Marsala wine sauce. We didn’t get to taste it but with Cruz’s touch for sauces, have added it to the list for next time. O’Neil says he is thrilled to have Cruz back at the helm as both head chef and now a partner in the business. “He’s incredibly talented,”says O’Neil, who like Cruz, worked his way up in the restaurant business—doing everything from washing dishes to bussing tables before opening his first restaurant,The Noodle, in Wilmette at age 25. “He was a line cook when he came to O’Neils and moved up from there. Everything he does is homemade with quality ingredients. He makes his own sauces and salad dressings. When he left, everyone could tell.” That culinary talent extends to the dessert menu, which as we mentioned earlier, includes his now-famous chocolate brownie, apple pie (served warm, of course), and other sweet treats. And lest we forget that we are in an establishment of fine libations, an extensive beer, wine, and cocktail menu provides a wide variety of delectable options from start to finish.
We especially loved the Hummingbird, perfect for brunch (or to start any meal) with a combination of Mionetto Prosecco, St. Germain Elderflower liqueur, and soda water with a twist. O’Neil, who continues to run nearby Trifecta with wife Mary, says that despite all the changes in the neighborhood and in the restaurant industry, Little Ricky’s has become exactly what he dreamed of, all those years ago. “We truly have something for everyone,”he says.“It’s fine dining but the environment is welcoming and casual. On any given Sunday, we might have someone eating here who is 5, and someone who is 95. And that’s the way it should be.” Little Ricky’s is located at 540 Lincoln Avenue in Winnetka. Full Boat NTHS TO HIT THE HOME WATER WITH 24 QUALIFYING ENTRANTS AT STATE SWIMMING AND DIVING MEET. BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
New Trier Township High School diving coach Bruce Kimball has stressed cardiovascular workouts during practices this fall. He makes his girls complete rounds of box jumps, among other exercises that make the heart race. “I’m not very good at those,” senior Katie Lipsey— a very good diver—admitted after a sectional meet at Highland Park High School on November 16. Teammate Erin McNally, another senior and another Trevian standout off the boards, had exactly 468.5 reasons to thank Kimball for his new emphasis in between meets. McNally tallied that many points— a pool-record total, to boot—to capture the sectional diving title and land an automatic state berth. McNally earned a slew of 7s from judges on her 11th and final dive, one with a 2.3 degree of difficulty, to stave off runner-up and former pool-record holder Allison Landis of Vernon Hills High School. Landis scored 464.8 points, ahead of Lipsey’s thirdplace 452.8. The previous pool mark was 422.1. “Bruce,” a grinning McNally said, “is making us do cardio to make sure we’d be able to escape a Zombie Apocalypse if there is one.” New Trier’s swimming and diving team essentially ran away with the 10-team sectional championship last weekend, racking up a voluminous 318 points to runner-up Evanston Township High School’s 226. A hefty total of 24 NTHS entrants qualified to hit the water in New Trier’s natatorium at the state meet November 22-23. Swift NTHS members of swimming coach Mac Guy’s crew touched first in seven of the meet’s 12 events—and set seven pool marks. Sophomore Carly Novelline and junior Greta Pelzek each won two events, with Novelline clocking a 55.34 in the 100-yard backstroke and a 51.21 in the 100 freestyle, and Pelzek topping the fields in the 200 IM (2:04.58) and 100 butterfly (55.26).

REVVED-UP TREV: New Trier Township High School sophomore Carly Novelline, seen here at the start of a heat at the girls’ swimming and diving state meet last fall, sped to first place in the 100-yard backstroke at the Highland Park Sectional last weekend. Her time of 55.34 didn’t just supplant a pool record; it also ranks first among all state qualifiers in the event. PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOEL LERNER
Sophomore and reigning 100-breaststroke state champion Kaelyn Gridley finished runner-up (1:03.01) in that event at the sectional after zipping to a meetbest time of 23.81 in the 50 freestyle. Two of the champs’ three relay units collected gold: 200 medley (Novelline, Gridley, Pelzek, and senior Joelle Ohr, pool-record 1:44.08); and 200 free (Ohr, Jane Sanderson, Alyssa Knaus, and Gridley, poolrecord 1:35.12). The quartet of Leslie Wendel, Ohr, Sanderson, and Novelline silvered in the 400 free relay with a statequalifying time of 3:30.36. Wendel, a sophomore, and her identical twin, Alexis Wendel, now officially share more than a DNA. They tied for fourth place (1:52.66) in the 200 free and got to mount a starter’s block together to receive their medals. “Wild, so wild, the twins finishing with the same time,” Guy said. Senior Audrey Richardson and freshman Charlize Escasa also extended their seasons last weekend. Richardson motored to state-qualifying berths in the 100 backstroke (third place, 57.09) and in the 200 IM (fourth, 2:08.15), and Escasa placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.85).
New Trier’s Athletes with Disabilities entrant, senior Sela Cornell, advanced to state in four events.
LAKE FOREST HIGH SCHOOL: Hats off—make that, Caps off—to Mary Grace King. The LFHS freshman’s bathing cap slipped off her head near the end of the 500-yard freestyle race at the Highland Park Sectional on November 16. No matter. She won the race, anyway—in poolrecord fashion. King clocked a 4:54.61 in the distance test, smashing the old mark of 5:02.19. “It happened to me before,” a smiling King said, alluding to the time her cap fled her head in a 5K race. King also qualified for the state meet in the 200 freestyle (sixth place, 1:53.47) and as a member of the Scouts’ 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Ashley Updike, Kendra Joachim, and Lauren Kingsley joined her on the former (fifth place, 1:47.47), and Updike, Isabella Lewin, and Joachim followed King’s lead-off leg on the latter (third, 3:32.27). Joachim and Updike, like King, each went 4-for-4 at the sectional; Joachim and Updike also qualified in a pair of individual events—Joachim in the 200 IM and in the 100 butterfly, and Updike in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. “We haven’t had a bad race yet,” LFHS swimming
| SATURDAY NOVEMBER 23 | SUNDAY NOVEMBER 24 2019
coach Carolyn Grevers said proudly near the end of the meet. The Scouts’ Athletes with Disabilities entrant, senior Julia Tanna, advanced to state in four events. Scouts sophomore Taylor Cekay was a victim of a highly competitive diving season. Her sixth-place point total of 400.15 missed at-large status by a handful of points. Normally, a sectional score of 380 is good enough to earn a spot at state. LOYOLA ACADEMY: Senior diver Jenna Loquercio emerged as the Ramblers’ lone state qualifier at the Deerfield Sectional on November 16, advancing with a sixth-place, at-large score of 424.7 points. LA finished third (176 points) in the team standings.
HIGHLAND PARK HS: Coach Tim Sirois’ Giants did not earn a state berth, but senior Selin Sonmez and freshman Emma Hartman each swam on a pair of top-six sectional relays in the home water last weekend. The two Giants linked with sophomore Alexandra Goldin and freshman Adriana Mendoza to post of fifth-place time of 1:40.32 in the 200 free relay; they later collaborated with senior Lillian Fleisher and freshman Quincy Winston for a sixthplace showing (3:49.09) in the 400 free relay. No Strings Attached IN A THEATER, DANCE, AND TEACHING CAREER SPANNING 70 YEARS, WINNETKA’S TOBY NICHOLSON KEEPS GIVING. BY MONICA KASS ROGERS ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
Just after his 80th birthday, a very spry Toby Nicholson scrambles up to his attic to fetch the handmade marionettes he now holds in his arms. Sleepy, Doc, Dopey, Bashful—all seven of Snow White’s dwarves are here, lovingly hand carved out of wood by Nicholson’s grandmother. “She was an amazing artist,” says Nicholson. “And she made these for me when I was a little boy—when she learned that I loved marionettes.” For Nicholson—who spent 30 years teaching dance and drama at New Trier Township High School, still performs television roles represented by Gray Talent Group of Chicago, and is now nearly two decades into co-directing and choreographing shows for Children’s Theatre of Winnetka (CTW)—the puppets are a sweet connection to his earliest beginnings in a theatrical life. “I was in third grade,” Nicholson recalls, “when I saw a production featuring marionettes at the children’s theater in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where I grew up. I was fascinated with them!” So was one of Nicholson’s best friends, a little girl named Kitty. Together, the two started collecting marionettes and putting on puppet shows at their homes. Kitty’s father built a stage, and the children wrote scripts, built sets, and created costumes for a growing assemblage of puppets. Within short order, their creative play spilled out to community audiences. “By fourth grade, we were going all around town putting on shows,” Nicholson says. “At the library, at school, at birthday parties … we were sort of a big thing,” he laughs. “We did those shows all the way until seventh grade. It was a great entrée into live theater. By third grade, I knew that’s what I wanted to do with my life.” Nicholson transitioned from puppet theater to performances with the neighborhood kids, casting, directing, building sets, and costuming plays. “We did Alice Through the Looking Glass,” he says. “And another year, it was a play called The Joke’s on the King.” He also started auditioning and landing roles in community theater with his mom and his brothers. “One year, for The Wizard of Oz,” he says, “my mom was Glinda the Good, I was Scarecrow, and my little brother, Toto.” At about the same time, Toby’s natural ability for dance emerged. “I was in show after show at the children’s theater, and the director kept saying, “Oh! You move so well—I should choreograph a dance for you.” While that never happened, Toby remembers thinking, “Gee, I’d really like to dance sometime. But back then, no boys in Baton Rouge took dance.” So when one of Nicholson’s neighbors, a ballet dancer taking classes with a touring production of Aida, heard of his interest, she taught him one of the dances from the ballet.

From there, Nicholson headed to college as a theater major, first at Carnegie Mellon, then at Northwestern University, where he got both his undergraduate degree, and later, his Masters in Dance Education. Early in this progression, says Nicholson, “I thought, you know, I feel like I’m a better dancer than actor. So I started taking ballet from Edna L. McRae who was a formidable force in dance in the city.” The classes with McRae honed Nicholson’s dance skills so well, that when Sybil Shearer—modern dance maverick and another giant in the Chicago dance community—saw Toby in a show at Northwestern, she came backstage to ask him to be in her company. Nicholson agreed. In the 20 years that followed, so did dozens of shows in summer stock with Herb Roger’s Music Theatre in Highland Park. He appeared in Guys and Dolls with Tony Bennett and in The Music Man with Van Johnson, among other shows. And he met his wife Juanita, (also a dancer in the company) in 1961, Shearer handed the reigns to the Winnetka branch of her school over to Toby and it became the Toby Nicholson School of Dance and Musical Theater, meeting at the Winnetka Community House. During this period, Nicholson also met Bill Peterman, the head of performing arts at New Trier. “At that time, there were no dance classes for boys at New Trier. So Bill asked me to get a teaching certificate so that I could teach the boys. Being hired at New Trier meant I could teach both
theater and dance. And part of the deal was that I would choreograph the school’s musical. I thought, “This is so fine—I’m in heaven.”
Many come because they may feel lost, that they don’t fit in...
At New Trier, Nicholson taught hundreds of students and directed, choreographed and/or did sets for about 100 plays, developing relationships and bonds that have endured. “I never met a kid I didn’t like,” says Nicholson, whose easygoing personality and belief in theater as a medium for the development of young people has never waned. “I’m kind of a Pollyanna type,” he says: “I think theater is good for all kids. Many come because they may feel lost, that they don’t fit in, or don’t yet know what their niche is. I always do my best to provide a secure base for the kids. I did at New Trier, and I do now at CTW. Working with the children, I really get to know them, their parents, their families ... we become very close.” As testament to those bonds, the production of A Christmas Carol that Nicholson puts on every other year at Community House of Winnetka, is largely cast with Nicholson’s former students. This year, for example, Tim Walsh, a Nicholson protégé, stars as Scrooge. And Nicholson’s son Christopher, is back in the role of Fred. Working with longtime musical collaborator Bob Bowker, the Christmas Carol Nicholson has crafted for this year’s performance, stays true to Dickens’ classic tale. “I worked very hard to stick with the story,” says Nicholson. “The only tangents I go on are expanding scenes from the book that work very well as dances,” he says. Among these? A fanciful ice dance built on a scene in the story where Bob Cratchit skates with kids, and spooky choreography capturing the sky full of spirits Scrooge sees through his window. “I never get tired of doing this,” Nicholson sums, on his way to another rehearsal. “I really am doing everything I enjoy, and I plan to keep at it as long as I can.” Toby Nicholson’s original production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is being presented at The Community House of Winnetka at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, December 7 and at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 8.
