Tea for You THE GUILD OF ST. MARY RINGS IN THE HOLIDAYS WITH ITS ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TEA ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6. BY ANN MARIE SCHEIDLER THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
For the Guild of St. Mary, it’s all about tradition when it comes to the holidays and its annual Christmas Tea is one of its most special. Cochairs Nicole Elliott and Rebecca Foster-Goodman will ensure that this year’s celebration on Friday, December 6 lives up to what past attendees have come to love. “Women have really embraced this new event as a holiday must,” says Elliott. “It’s something we look forward to now to celebrate Christmas— it’s truly a community-building event.” Lake Forest’s Guild of St. Mary is made up of more than 500 women and has been serving the church and community for 85 years—from the Christmas Sharing Tree program for Most Blessed Trinity Parish, to the Guild’s involvement in the monthly food drives benefitting the Holy Family Food Pantry. Proceeds from the Christmas Tea will benefit the Church of St. Mary and its philanthropic initiatives, which the Guild carries out most prominently through its Circles—smaller groups of women within the Guild who meet once a month to connect and discuss service opportunities. FOR WINNETKA’S CATHY HIRSCHMANN, CHILDREN’S THEATER HAS BROUGHT A LIFETIME OF MAGIC. BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
By 4:05 p.m. on a chilly Thursday afternoon and the Winnetka Community House’s Matz Auditorium has filled with the cast for Children’s Theatre of Winnetka’s (CTW) upcoming production of Beauty and the Beast. Eighty children perched on folding chairs chatter, waiting for the play rehearsal to begin. On stage, costumed lead characters practice bits of choreography. Gaston tosses his sidekick LeFou stage left, a move that looks suspiciously like one the grinning twosome might execute on their own in junior high hallways. Upstage, the handsome prince twirls beaming Belle in circles—her long hair flying out behind. And stage right, a very teapot-ly Mrs. Potts practices lines with clock-man Cogsworth, who today seems to be missing his wind-up key. All of this is in motion until the small, blonde figure of co-director Cathy Hirschmann stands up in front of the assembly and calls things to order, efficiently launching yet another rehearsal. Efficiency comes easily for Hirschmann, who has spent most of her life working with children’s theater. Next week’s production of Beauty and the Beast will be Hirschmann’s 25th show with CTW—a milestone that she says came in a flash. “The years doing this have gone by so quickly,” says Hirschmann, taking a short break to think back on the progression. “And I’ve loved every minute.” Hirschmann came to CTW after helping with the “Main Show” for the Winnetka’s Children’s Fair. Each show is put together within a 12-week window, with rehearsals three times a week, plus meetings—all time and effort that Hirschmann has volunteered without pay, for the duration. “Each show we’ve done has its memorable moments for me,” she says. “Peter Pan was a highlight, because of the dancing. It was very difficult choreography, but the kids did it so well, they just amazed me. And Mary Poppins! That was one of the best shows we ever did. Fiddler on the Roof was special to me because I’m Jewish and leading the kids through that production gave me the opportunity to bring in the culture behind the story— to introduce the kids to meaningful Jewish traditions that many of them were unfamiliar with.” Hirschmann’s life in theater started at a very young age. “My mother took me to a children’s play when I was about 4 years old. I don’t remember the name of it, but I was completely hooked!” she remembers. “The show had gypsies that came dancing and singing up the aisles, and I said, ‘Oh my God, this is the best thing in the world!’ So I Cathy Hirschmann just jumped in and started doing plays.” PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS Her first role was Winnie the Pooh, complete with a costume her mother crafted out of brown from school to school, and after each show, the paper grocery bags. “I was 5, at summer camp” kids would come up and we would talk. But as time has passed, Circles have tended to come together organically based on the common phase of life the women are in—whether they have young children, older ones, or are empty nesters. As in the past, this year’s Christmas Tea will feature an array of holiday-centric hallmarks— from a cookie walk to a 50/50 raffle—in an iconic venue located at 300 N. Green Bay Road in Lake Forest. Guests can also shop for those on their holiday gift lists from onsite vendors like Mark David Designs, Kudos Collections, Kiddles Sports, How Impressive!, Country Classics, Winona Street Design, and Flowers by Katie Ford. choreographer for 30 years, agreed to join Hirschmann as co-director and choreographer of the fall shows, 19 years ago. Together, says Hirschmann, “Toby and I have worked very hard to raise the bar on the level of professionalism and quality of each show. From the beginning of our collaboration, we started double-casting all of the roles, including the ensemble. And when possible, we started using the Broadway choreography.” “I think it’s really important not to talk down to children.” Hirschmann explains. “To expect them to respect each other, the production, and the process. I keep the bar very high for them. And even though it’s hard—the choreography can be difficult and learning the role can be a struggle— that’s OK, because the children rise to the challenge. And there is nothing more rewarding than seeing the joy they feel when they have worked hard and then put on a great show.” But above all, Hirschmann concludes, children’s theater keeps magic alive. “When I was a child and saw my first production, it was real to me. Gypsies were real. Pirates were real. Fairies were real. Every time I was in a play I could be in that magical world. The reason I love doing children’s theater today, is that I can now give all these children the chance to be in that imaginary place. To live the fantasy of being another character in another world.” This year’s production of Beauty and the Beast is dedicated to Catherine Hayes, a former CTW cast member who lost her battle to liver cancer. The show opens at 7 p.m. Thursday,
November 21 and continues at 7:30 p.m. Friday, November 22; 12:30 and 4 p.m. Saturday, November 23; and at 1 and 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 24. Performances take place in Matz Hall at the Winnetka Community House, 620 Lincoln Avenue, in Winnetka. HONEST LAUGHS
IMPROV ARTIST JIMMY CARRANE AND THE ART OF SLOW COMEDY. BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
When Evanston-based comedian Jimmy Carrane tells a story, images bloom. Funny, poignant, sad, and then funny again, each picture pops up, to be replaced by the next. We see a junior-high Jimmy standing at the counter of the 1970s-era Blann Pharmacy in Kenilworth, buying 100 Grand candy bars with house credit, then obsessing about his mother’s coming wrath about the purchase. There’s also third-grade Jimmy, furious at losing another Wiffle ball game to his brother, chasing him around the yard with the skinny, yellow bat. And adult Jimmy perching on a pew at his father’s funeral, determined to make a speech, as the priest and Winnetka Police tried to stop him. “Before you can be funny, you need to be real,” says Carrane, one of Chicago’s longest standing improvisers and teachers. It’s a credo Jimmy lives by, making his work relatable, and true. Just now, that means telling tales of fatherhood in “World’s Greatest Dad,” his show running Saturday nights through November at Judy’s Beat Lounge in Chicago. “When I was studying with Del Close at the Improv Olympic (now called the IO) in the ’80s, the thing that I connected with the most was his belief in truth in comedy,” says Carrane. “Del showed us that you could go on stage and tell a story without embellishing it and you could get laughs. He really believed in slowing the comedy down. Making it more realistic. And I started doing all of that.” Close’s impact, along with that of Martin DeMaat, a giant in Chicago’s comedy cosmos who taught Jimmy at Columbia College, helped shape Carrane’s early years in improv. They also helped lay the groundwork for “The Art of Slow Comedy” classes Carrane has taught for decades, at The Second City, IO, Green Shirt Studio, and his own workshops. “I took my first class at Second City when I was 19,” Carrane remembers, “and there was no turning back. I performed with people like Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Rachel Dratch, and Andy Richter. Adam McKay and Jon Favreau were at the IO the same time I was as well. And there were so many others. The ’80s and early ’90s was just a such a cool time to be part of it.” But Carrane came to comedy much earlier than that first class. “Even at a young age, I was a comedy snob,” he says. “I would watch M*A*S*H, The Bob Newhart Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and Saturday Night Live. I knew what was good, what I liked, and when somebody was going for cheap laughs. I did improv before I knew that was what I was doing. I hated people just telling jokes. I thought they were really canned.” As a kid, Carrane used comedy to blunt the ridicule he got for being heavy. “I was a fat kid—300 pounds when I graduated New Trier. And I grew up on the east side of Kenilworth, the land of the beautiful people. I never felt like I fit in.” “I had an interesting relationship with Kenilworth,” he continues. “There are some nice

memories. We had a really big backyard, about a quarter of an acre. And during the spring and summer, we would play Wiffle ball from morning to night. Our house was the house where all the kids would play. But outside of Kenilworth, when you told people you lived there, people assumed you were really wealthy,” he remembers. “And I had a lot of shame about that.” As well, growing up in a household where showing emotion was discouraged, Carrane learned to bury sadness and anger, resorting to sarcasm as a sneaky way to express himself. “It was anger, but passive-aggressive,” he says. “I could use sarcasm at home without getting busted for being angry. But emotions are so important to artists. Because that’s where creativity lives. And if you start shutting that down, it’s like taking our paints away.” So, coming to improv, “was mind-blowing,” says Carrane. “This whole idea of playing and being free to express. I loved it immediately. Everything I had been punished for up until that point—being a smart (alek) at school and at home—now I was being rewarded for. I found like-minded people—my people, and it was awesome.” Carrane trained at both The Second City and IO, and was one of the earliest members of the
Annoyance Theatre. There, he had the opportunity to do his first one-man show, a personal narrative called, I’m 27, I Still Live at Home, and I Sell Off ice Supplies, which ran for 1 ½ years, and got a lot of positive press and reviews. The acclaim brought Jimmy an agent, leading to roles in film and television. Later he landed a long-running job interviewing celebrities on Chicago Public Radio, started a podcast “Improv Nerd” (where he interviews improv comedy legends), and co-wrote “Improvising Better: A Guide for the Working Improviser” with Liz Allen. Despite the growing popularity of improv, Carrane and his comedy cohorts still face some general public confusion about what it is. “A lot of people still don’t know that there’s a difference between stand-up or sketch comedy, and improv. With stand-up and sketch, it’s scripted. With improv, you are making it up as you go along. You get up on stage and you don’t know what you are going to say to your partner, what character you are going to play, where the scenes are going to go. There’s no script in this at all. It’s like jazz is to pop music.” To face down the challenge of seeing so many of his associates vaulted to fame, while Carrane wondered, “What about me? I’m talented.

Shouldn’t I be next?” along with anger issues from childhood, he started group therapy. And that’s what lead him to ultimately getting married, having a daughter, and finding more happiness—all of which has inspired his new one-person show. For now, Carrane is very much focused on raising his daughter, teaching, performing and being a better listener. “There is no better tool out there to improve your listening skills than improv. Listening, really listening, is something I’m constantly working on. Everybody wants to be listened to. We could all do such a better job at it.” Currane is currently performing two shows at Judy’s Beat Lounge. His “The World’s Greatest Dad” show is running at 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays through Nov. 30, and his improv show, “Jimmy and Johnny,” with John Hildreth and a third special guest, happens at 8 p.m. on the first Sunday of the month. Leo Scheidler, in one swift motion, swept a patch of the home football turf with his right hand. The Lake Forest High School sophomore cornerback executed the move moments before every Kaneland High School snap in a Class 6A secondround football playoff game on November 8. “We all do that,” Scheidler said, referring to the Scouts’ defensive backs. “We do that now to make sure we’re focused and ready before each play. “When we watched film of our [39-7] loss to Lake Zurich in September, we noticed we weren’t as ready as we needed to be.” Lake Forest High School’s entire football team last weekend, in front of the home fans on a frigid night? Ready, steady. And heady. LFHS, seeded 14th, routed Kaneland High’s sixth-seeded Knights 35-10 to earn a state quarterfinal berth against second-seeded Deerfield High School. The DHS Warriors (9-2) visit the Scouts (7-4) November 16 at 1 p.m. Scheidler was a disrupter all night against the Knights (8-3), particularly from spots in the Scouts’ end zone in the third quarter. The 6-foot, 145pound varsity rookie broke up a pass on a fourthand-11 play from LF’s 19-yard line on Kaneland’s first possession of the second half and then came down with an interception on a fourth-and-nine with 5:52 left in the frame. The second intrusion protected a 21-3 lead. “My eyes got pretty big there,” Scheidler recalled. The Scouts’ other starting cornerback—sophomore Jake Milliman, a 6-2, 165-pounder—came

up huge one minute before the start of the fourth quarter, catching up to Kaneland senior wide receiver Max Gagne near the end of a lengthy pass play and knocking the ball loose. LFHS senior safety Charlie Altounian recovered the free pigskin in the end zone. The sequence, with the host school up 28-3, went from what appeared to be a certain Kaneland touchdown to Lake Forest’s ball, just like that. Milliman’s extraction of the football from the
clutches of a foe reminded many of ex-Chicago Bears cornerback Charles Tillman’s signature “Peanut Punch.” Tillman forced 44 fumbles in his 13-year NFL career. “Jake,” Scheidler reported afterward, “watched videos of Tillman doing the ‘Peanut Punch’ before the game.” Scheidler finished with seven tackles, two pass break-ups, and that interception, his second of the
season. Coach Chuck Spagnoli’s sophomore cornerbacks have had to grow up in a hurry, and neither appears the least bit daunted in the heart of postseason action. “Amazing, those two,” Scouts junior quarterback Richie Hoskins said. “Athletes—that’s what they are. They’re tall, and they’re fast.” Hoskins was electric atop the turf at the school’s West Campus, sprinting north for 139 yards (on 16 carries) and passing for an additional 130. He rushed for the Scouts’ first two TDs, the first measuring one yard, the second covering 16 years. Both tallies occurred in the first quarter. Significant chunks of Hoskins’ yardage on the ground followed sudden stops and ankle-breaking shifts. Junior running back Mac Uihlein, also a ferocious linebacker, took care of the straight-ahead stuff for the home team, entering an end zone after rushes of four, three and two yards in the second half. Senior linebacker Connor Morrison snared the Scouts’ first interception at the 3:34 mark of the first quarter, and LFHS senior defensive back Coel Morcott recovered a Kaneland fumble a little more than three minutes later. “Takeaways aren’t accidents,” said Spagnoli, who also guided LFHS teams to state quarterfinal berths in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016. “Our kids work on causing turnovers. “I’m glad we have the kids we have.” NOTABLE: Among the Scouts’ other significant statistics in last weekend’s playoff win included senior wideout Connor Milliman (four receptions, 68 yards); senior punter/wideout Kai Kroeger (four receptions, 62 yards); sophomore running back Jahari Scott (20 rushes, 65 yards); senior defensive lineman Rylie Mills (pass knockdown); junior defensive lineman Jackson Shea (tackles for loss); and Uihlein (11 rushes, 54 yards).

Loyola Academy junior defensive back Marty Auer did not pout, did not cry, and we’re telling you why: Because the Glenview resident made a pivotal play in the fourth quarter, intercepting a pass—his fourth pick

of the season—to set up the Ramblers’ gamewinning touchdown in a 28-27 victory in Wilmette.Auer downplayed his feat, essentially calling it a gift nearly seven weeks before Christmas Day.“It wasn’t that amazing,” Auer said. “The football bounced off the receiver’s arms and, all of sudden, there it was, in my hands.”Eighteenth-seeded and reigning Class 8A state champion Loyola Academy (8-3) then produced a 58-yard scoring drive, capped by a one-yard touchdown run from junior running back Vaughn Pemberton with 3:10 remaining, to overcome its second doubledigit deficit of the game against the secondseeded Hilltoppers (10-1). Loyola Academy hosts 23rd-seeded Marist
(7-4) in a state quarterfinal November 16 at 12:30 p.m. “He’s a playmaker; that’s why he’s there,” Loyola Academy coach John Holecek said of Auer, who has played cornerback and safety this season. “It’s uncanny how often Marty makes big plays for us.” The biggest special-teams play of the day was LA junior Aidan Brownlee’s 99-yard kickoff return for a TD at the start of the second half. The wide receiver secured the pigskin and planted a foot inches from the goal line before blasting off for a score that cut Glenbard West’s lead to 14-13. “As I ran upfield, I saw a hole, and I hit it,” Brownlee said.

His thrilling trip generated deafening cheers—along with a chorus of Ho Ho Hos from a certain section in the bleachers—in the first 15 seconds of the third quarter. Pemberton finished with 129 yards rushing on a hefty 33 carries. The first of his two TD bursts covered four yards with four seconds left in the first half. “Vaughn,” Holecek said, “is a total difference-maker. He plays with such emotion and enthusiasm. He’s all go all the time.” Ramblers quarterback JT Thomas, yet another impactful junior, completed 13-of-17 passes for 125 yards, including a five-yard TD strike to senior wide receiver Matthew Mangan at 11:06 of the final quarter. A Hero’s Welcome KRIS “TANTO” PARONTO SHARES LESSONS LEARNED AT “A HERO’S SALUTE.” BY ELAINE DOREMUS ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
Seven years after the terrorist attack on the CIA compound in Benghazi, former U.S. Army Ranger and CIA security contractor Kris Paronto reflects on that fateful 13-hour standoff and the lessons learned. “When you take a life, you are changed forever,” he says quietly. Paronto was one of the six members of the U.S. CIA Annex Security Team (including Marines, Seals, and Rangers) that defended the compound on the night of September 11, 2012. “There were only six of us, and you could tell from the gunfire that that there were a lot more of them,” he recalls. “We wanted to gain the initiative back, but were told to stand down twice. We were an experienced team and nobody lost their cool. We wanted to go over to help so we bucked orders and left as a cohesive team.” Two members of that team lost their lives that night—Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods—both former Navy SEALs. As a survivor of the Benghazi attack and many other missions during his ten-plus years deploying overseas as a Ranger, Paronto carries these experiences with him and offers insight and hope to others—most importantly, veterans. Today, Paronto is a sought after speaker, founder of the 14th Hour Foundation, and author of two books, one of which became a major motion picture. Paronto took the stage last month at “A Hero’s Salute,” a Heal Team 6 fundraiser to benefit Honor Flight of Lake County. Based in nearby North Chicago, the local nonprofit group flies American veterans to Washington D.C. to visit the memorials dedicated to honoring their service and the sacrifices made by their comrades in arms. “I was happy to come speak to help ‘A Hero’s Salute’,” says Paronto. “I am careful to vet the organizations I support to understand how much of the funds raised are actually going to veterans.” During Paronto’s appearance at Loyola’s Cuneo Mansion and Gardens in Vernon Hills, he spoke about the insight he gained over his years as a Ranger and a CIA contractor on numerous deployments, and how others can apply what he’s learned in teamwork and leadership situations. He also touched on the faith that guides him and his mission to help other veterans overcome PTSD and setbacks in life. “I talked about the lessons learned by the mistakes we made in places like Iraq, Afghanistan, and Benghazi,” he says. “I also talk about leadership and faith. I have my own demons and PTSD, but I try to share with my audiences that I never give up, despite these burdens.” To this end, Paronto says he is constantly in touch with fellow veterans, including men he has served alongside, to support them through their struggles. “I’ve lost friends to suicide,” he says. “I feel that I am able to give the tough love when my friends need it, because I’ve fought my way out of it, and I know they can do the same thing.”

He also established the 14th Hour Foundation, which raises and distributes funds to veterans on a grant basis. If there was one thing Paronto took away from the controversy in the wake of Benghazi, it was to hold fast to his own truth. For a time, he says, he and the surviving military contractors from that night got caught up unwittingly in the scramble to decipher events, assign blame, and take sides—most of it politically motivated. “But they were calling us liars, and we wanted to tell the true story,” he says. Benghazi, co-wrote the book, 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi, along with author Mitchell Zuckoff. The book was published by 3 Arts Entertainment, and not long after it was optioned for a movie. Directed by Michael B a y, Paronto was portrayed by Pablo Schreiber in the film 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. In 2017, Paronto released his second book, The Ranger Way: Living the Code On and Off the Battlefield. A selfimprovement and survival guide, the book takes Paronto’s experiences from his Army

training to instruct readers on how to be successful in their own lives by overcoming adversity. “It’s a story about leadership and not quitting,” he explains. “That you can fail and still pick yourself up. I’ve had life changing experiences, seen friends die, taken lives when I had to. After living through things like that, the world opens up more and I don’t take things for granted. I appreciate life and being a family man.” Paronto now lives that ethos every day with his wife, Tanya, and three children, ages 4, 11, and 15, in Omaha, Nebraska—soaking up time with them that he missed while he was deployed for so many months and years. That, and he just released his next book, The Patriots Creed: Inspiration and Advice for Living a Heroic Life, on October 22. In the book, Paronto uses the seven core Army Values that all soldiers learn in basic combat training, and the experiences of other servicemen and women and first responders, to explain how anyone can improve themselves, the world around them, and live a heroic life. “The odds were stacked against us that night but the truth is that we refused to quit and we beat them with faith, teamwork, and the principles that were first instilled in me when I joined the Army. You can find those in the Rangers Creed and the Army Values,” he says, “and you don’t have to be a Special Operations soldier to use them.” Would he do it again, become a Ranger, knowing what he now knows? “Definitely” he says. “In a heartbeat.” For more information about Heal Team 6, visit healteam6.org.
