When Dr. Steven Bloch was a college student, a bout with acute appendicitis inadvertently changed his life. “I was not the best patient,” says Dr. Bloch, founder of Body by Bloch and Skin Deep Medical Spa. “In the middle of the night, based on my vital signs, the surgeon showed up and basically said ‘I’m doing this because I’m not going to be responsible if we don’t’.” The surgeon’s confidence and dedication to his profession was not only impressive, but inspiring. Though he’d been considering a career as an architect, Dr. Bloch’s experience as a surgery patient was profound enough to cause him to switch his major to pre-med. “After that, I knew I wanted to be a doctor,” he explains. “In plastic surgery, there are two branches—the aesthetic and the reconstructive.” As a student of architecture, he already had the aesthetic sensibilities, something he says “can’t really be taught.” “It’s a matter of gauging proportions and creating a line that’s pleasing to the eye. The study of plastic surgery is

recognizing that line and applying the technology to achieve it,” says Dr. Bloch, who did residencies in surgery and plastic surgery at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he was chief resident in plastic surgery. He also did a medical internship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Today, Dr. Bloch is on the staff of North Shore Medical Center and performs surgery there and at his state of the art private facility in Highland Park. With a new decade on the horizon and revolutionary new procedures being reported every day, we reached out to Dr. Bloch to get his take on the state of the industry. NEWS BARRIERS Cont. from PG 1 not to change their looks. Two other myths are that I can make anyone look any way they want (which is not true) and that there will be no scar. There is always a scar. What trends in this field have you seen emerge? It’s become more mainstream. At one time, it was the exclusive purview of the wealthy. Now it’s available and accessible around the world. Technology has also improved, which allows us to take less invasive measures. Let’s say you want to tighten skin. As people age, they lose skin tone and elasticity and we’d all like to have that magic wand to make skin tighter. In the past, we used to cut out that excess skin. Now, though it won’t work on severe cases, we can produce skin tightening results by promoting collagen and elastin from the noninvasive infrared, ultrasound, or minimally invasive measures. It’s become a popular field, so there are wannabes or non-plastic surgeons. I advise patients to check the credentials of whomever they’re going to. What’s the most important pre-surgery procedure?

Examining the medical background in terms of age and history of medical care. I’m a doctor first. I want to make sure that it’s safe. We have a detailed medical questionnaire and exam procedure. Do you see alignment with those against body shaming? I don’t believe it’s my job to talk someone into having plastic surgery. But I think people should respect someone who wants to have plastic surgery. There should not be tyranny on either side. At the end of the day, it’s a wonderful thing to feel comfortable in your own skin—and frankly, feeling comfortable naked is liberating. Have you ever talked a patient out of having plastic surgery? I turn down a fair number of patients if I think it just isn’t going to work the way they want, or if the patient is totally unrealistic about what can be achieved. For example, liposuction, which I do a lot of, is intended to be a body shaping procedure. It’s not intended for weight loss. So, based on what the patient wants, I often advise the patient to lose weight first. What’s the most rewarding patient outcome you’ve experienced? I had this one patient who’s lost about 140

pounds on her own. She was only in her 20s. Her skin was hanging, so I did multiple operations to remove the excess skin. On one of the last operations, I happened to turn her over on the operating table and I noticed that there was a suspicious mole that I hadn’t noticed before. I decided to remove it, and it turned out to be a melanoma. She thanked me afterwards. A couple of years later, she brought her fiancéé to meet me. She said ‘I wouldn’t be here had you not noticed that mole and removed it’. She’s since maintained her weight loss and had a couple of kids. So, basically she met the man of her dreams, had kids, and has lived a happy life. Twenty years later, she told me that the operation and her efforts totally changed the direction of her life. What’s the most commonly requested procedure? It depends on the time of year. Liposuction is one of the most common but I also do a lot of nose jobs, facelifts, breast contouring, and tummy tucks. Women may want to have breast augmentation, usually before summer. Facelifts are requested by aging Baby Boomers. If a patient wants to maintain a youthful appearance, they can start earlier with non-invasive treatments. My goal is

to put off the time that a patient has their first facelift by doing non-invasive and anti-aging treatments. Once they have a facelift, I continue with non-invasive treatments to maintain the look. Then, rather than having multiple facelifts and looking strange, maybe they will only need one or two but always look fabulous and ageless. Can you give an example of a man whose life was improved by plastic surgery? I’ve had a lot of male patients. One of the more common complaints is an excess of breast tissue. Let’s say the boy’s in high school. He doesn’t want to take his shirt off, he doesn’t want to be intimate, and afterward, the boys’ parents tell me ‘you have no idea how you’ve changed my kid’s life’. The kids get comfortable being naked. The male patient who might not like his appearance often can’t even look at me. Then, I do surgery and he looks at me and smiles. They’re so self-conscious, it literally affects their very being. Plastic surgery gives them the confidence to engage with the world. TWO NEW TRIER JUNIORS PARTICIPATE IN HIGH-ENERGY PHYSICS EXPERIMENT. EDITED BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

New Trier Township High School juniors Paul Graham and Ellie Winkler have spent the past year working with a team of 15 other Chicagoarea high school students and teachers to propose, design, build, and analyze a unique high-energy physics experiment for the world-renowned Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia. The students plan to submit an article about their findings for publication and present at the American Association of Physics Teachers Winter Meeting in Orlando in January—all before even entering their senior year of high school. Graham and Winkler became interested in high-energy physics as freshmen after visiting New Trier’s Academic Assistance Center, an onsite tutoring center staffed mostly by retired teachers. In the spring of 2018, AAC tutor Nathan Unterman installed a detector for students to learn about cosmic rays, the high-energy protons and atomic nuclei that rain down on the earth from outside the solar system. “I think that particle physics and astrophysics really appeal to me because looking at what makes up the universe on the tiny scale and on the really large scale, I just think that’s super fascinating and mysterious,” Winkler says. “I think as of right now, that’s what I want to do with my life.” The duo continued participating in research and contributing to shared data as they transitioned to New Trier’s Winnetka Campus last fall, when they began running feasibility studies from the Tower Building on that campus. Soon after, Unterman introduced them to a group of Chicago-area students and teachers from Glenbrook North, Downers Grove South, Naperville Central, Ida Crown, Rochelle Zell, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. By December, the students joined forces to

further their studies and design an experiment for Fermilab. The teachers guided the students through the process of feasibility study—filing a formal proposal, execution, analysis, and reporting, and the experiment was approved in March 2019. The High School Students’ Muon Underground Shielding Experiment (MUSE) is an authentic cosmic ray experiment conducted in Fermilab’s MINOS neutrino tunnel, which houses detectors placed in the world’s most intense accelerator-generated neutrino beam 103 meters below ground and connects to the surface through an access shaft with an elevator. Neutrinos are subatomic particles with a much smaller mass than that of the other known elementary particles. Fermilab’s Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation

Search, or MINOS, was designed to study the phenomena of neutrino oscillations. “Essentially what the students are proposing is to measure the cosmic ray shielding in the MINOS tunnel,” Unterman says. “Fermilab built an access shaft and that’s how they got everything down there, but that means you have this chunk not shielded. So, the question is, how much does the shaft contribute to cosmic rays that are picked up in the neutrino detector? As you move downstream from the shaft—does the number of cosmic rays change?” For the MUSE experiment, the students measured the change in cosmic ray flux in the tunnel as they moved downstream from the elevator, anticipating the change in burden would affect the flux. To test this hypothesis, the students

assembled three cosmic ray detectors: one to monitor cosmic rays above ground as a control, an identical detector to measure the rate underground, and a third to measure the muon background in the neutrino beam. “What they have accomplished so far is nothing short of amazing,” New Trier Science Department Chair Jason English says. While access to the tunnel was limited to students age 18 and older, the students still visited Fermilab almost every week in rotating groups, recording data from the surface of the tunnel as needed. “This experiment is not just a good PR move for Fermilab, nor is it just a ‘gift’ of time and space for educational purposes,” English continues. “The experiment they are running could add to the body of scientific knowledge. In fact, even a null result would do so.” While further analysis is needed to verify the group’s preliminary results, working at Fermilab has already heightened their confidence in pursuing high energy physics. Graham says his experience reminded him of a legend from the Vatican in which a man saved a large group of people who were attempting to raise a giant obelisk with ropes from disaster because he yelled “water to the ropes” after noticing they were expanding in the midday heat— even though workers and observers had been threatened with the penalty of death for speaking. Instead of being punished, though, the man was rewarded for speaking his mind. A sculpture with the saying designed by Fermilab’s first director, Robert Wilson, sits outside Wilson Hall at the laboratory. “The moral of the story is that everyone should be able to speak up and should not be punished for it,” Graham says. “No matter the rank, everyone has a right to comments. Everyone in high energy physics is even on a first name basis; this is a really cool idea, which taught me about how people should work together.” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

LAKE FOREST’S AMERICAN LEGION MCKINLOCK POST 264 CELEBRATES ITS 100-YEAR ANNIVERSARY, REFLECTING ON STRENGTH AND A DEVOTION TO VETERANS. BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

In March 1919, in the months after World War I had ended—claiming the lives of more than 100,000 American soldiers—delegates from combat and service units of the American Expeditionary Force were granted a charter in Paris to form what would become the American Legion. The goal was to care for sick and disabled veterans, establishing hospitals and other services that later extended to veterans of later wars. While the concept was new, Lake Forest was one of the first American cities to open a local post in October 1919 to serve the needs of its returning war veterans. American Legion Post 264 was named in honor of Lt. George Alexander McKinlock Jr., a Lake Forest native and among of the first 16 Lake Forest residents to be killed in action on the battlefield. McKinlock, who was with a machine gun group in France, had graduated from Harvard University in 1916. He was admitted to the First Officer’s Training Camp at Fort Sheridan, where he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the U. S. Army. He was killed two years later in the battle of Cantigny, though his body wasn’t recovered by his mother until 1921. His legacy, and the legacy of those who came in the wars after, was honored last month as American Legion Post 264 held its 100th anniversary dinner. “The significance of this event is especially important in contrast to what has happened to other American Legion Posts in this area of Lake County,” says Gilman Clark, longtime legionnaire in Post 264. “The American Legion Building in Waukegan was razed some years ago as membership diminished and the current post is a shadow of its old self without a permanent home. Twenty years ago, Highland Park held weekly bingo nights in its building on Sheridan Road. However, as membership declined their building was sold and has been a community arts center for quite some time.” Another local group, Post 510 in Lake Bluff, once hosted the famous Fourth of July parade in that village. Today, a community group handles the parade and Post 510 officially deactivated last year due to declining membership.

“Fortunately, our Post 264 has received several new members who were in the Lake Bluff Post who want to continue active membership,” adds Clark. “Possibly the reason Post 264 continues as a strong and viable post is its involvement in many veteran and community support functions, especially programs related to the youth population. Our biggest effort by far is sponsoring Lake Forest Day the past 98 years, which includes both post members and community volunteers.” The mission of the Lake Forest McKinlock Post 264 remains the same today as it was when it was founded 100 years ago—to promote loyalty “to Country and Patriotism, not only in

But it might have had something to do with New Trier High School’s field hockey team capturing another Illinois State Field Hockey Association state championship at Oak ParkRiver Forest High School on November 2. In late September, during a trip to Pennsylvania, the nationally ranked Trevians chose to engage in a series a Zombie Laser Tag battles before a game against a nationally ranked team. Zombie Laser Tag is an extreme indoor sport. “It loosened us up, brought us closer together,” New Trier senior and Denison (Ohio) University-bound midfielder Grace Harris recalls. Harris and her mates—notably senior forward/midfielder Kathryn McLaughlin, who notched a hat trick—played extremely well outdoors last weekend, defeating Lake Forest High School 4-2 in overtime in a rematch of last year’s state title game. NT emerged victorious in that contest, behind a pair of goals from Harris. Harris tallied the Trevians’ final goal last weekend. “ We’d been practicing since June,” says Harris, who started the season as a midfielder but ended up in the all-important “screen” slot, a hybrid midfielder/defender position. “Our practices were intense. We lifted weights. “Everybody,” she adds, “wanted to win badly, wanted to be the best.” New Trier (29-2-1), ranked No. 15 in the nation by MAX Field Hockey, scored the first two goals in the title game before Lake Forest’s Scouts barely beat the first-half buzzer to pare that lead in half. LF knotted it at 2 with 9:47 left in the second half. “Before overtime I had a good feeling we’d win,” says New Trier coach Stephanie Nykaza, whose 2019 season was her 30th at the Winnetka school. “I felt pretty calm. We’d been pretty dominant all season, and it was one of my strongest teams. “Lake Forest,” she adds, “gave us a huge battle. Lake Forest scared us.” McLaughlin, a University of Michigan recruit, was frighteningly good versus the Scouts and everybody else this fall. Her three goals in her final prep game last weekend upped her season total to an astounding 74, to go with her 16 assists. McLaughlin ranks among the top 50 field hockey players in the United States, Nykaza notes. “Kate,” Harris says, “is always hungry for the ball when she competes. Her movement is outstanding. On top of that, she has an outstanding shot—a wicked-hard shot.” New Trier played LFHS three times before

Nearly two weeks before Veterans Day 2019, former Navy SEAL Michael Martin has songs on his mind. Drawn-out songs. Ditties, too. And all lengths of tunes in between. “They say you should never judge a song by its length,” the 46-year-old Kenilworth resident says. “You should judge it by its content. A song can be short, but that song’s content can also be phenomenal.” Martin— a peacetime and wartime Navy SEAL from 1996-2006—is talking metaphorically. The short “song” was the life of good friend Erik Kristensen, a SEAL Team quickreaction force (QRF) lieutenant commander who was only 33 years old when he was killed in Afghanistan during an attempted rescue of fellow SEALs in 2005. Kristensen had boarded a Chinook helicopter with several other Navy SEAL personnel and headed to the location of a distress call without gunship escort. “He did not have to be on that helicopter,” Martin says, adding Eric Bana portrayed Kristensen in the 2013 movie Lone Survivor. “But he felt strongly about accompanying his men on that mission. His story is a powerful one. Erik was a huge success as a SEAL because of his passion. He was also a Renaissance man. He was a poet, a scholar, an athlete, a natural leader.” Martin, along with Chicago-based commercial real estate broker Michael Marrion, will serve as a co-host at the Second Annual Kristensen Boxing Smoker Benefit in January at Palmer House Hilton in Chicago. The goal is to raise funds to endow a Saint Ignatius College Prep scholarship that will benefit the sons and daughters of active duty military and Chicago Fire Department and Chicago Police Department personnel, as well as those who have lost a parent in the line of duty. The inaugural benefit featured bouts between U.S. Naval Academy and University of Notre Dame boxers and raised $30,000; the 2020 edition will pit U.S. Naval boxers vs. Chicago Golden Gloves champs. Martin and Marrion—a graduate of Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C., Kristensen’s alma mater—aim to generate at least $70,000 on January 25. “Erik’s parents told me to get in touch with Michael Marrion,” says Martin, who has five

We didn’t want to do a golf fundraiser; too many organizations hold one of those, right? I wanted to put together something unique, and I’ve always loved the Navy boxing program. “How often,” he adds, “do people get to see live boxing?” But the event won’t be all about pugilists and the people in their corner; so much of it will be about people supporting the promising futures of students who are children of first responders and military servicemen and servicewomen. “Kids of first responders and military personnel don’t choose to be that,” says Martin, vice chairman of the board of the Navy SEAL Foundation. “We want to be there for them, and we want to provide the means to a classic education for them.” Martin attended Brother Rice High School, an all-boys Roman Catholic college prep school in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. On an East Coast college trip with his mother, Pat Nickol, Martin, a standout swimmer, hoped to meet with the U.S. Naval Academy’s swimming coach. But the coach was not available. A recent graduate then invited Martin for a tour of the academy in his dark green Corvette. “I’m sitting in his car, and I saw plebes that day,” Martin recalls. “They looked like robots. I remember thinking, ‘I have nothing in common with them. That’s not me.’ ” One conversation led to another in Annapolis, Maryland, before Martin asked his tour guide, “What was your time like here?” The ensign replied, “Best experience of my life.” They talked some more. Martin had changed his tune about the U.S. Naval Academy by the time he exited the car. “What struck me about him was his confidence,” Martins says. “He was the most confident guy I’d ever met. My mom was staying at the Georgetown Inn during my time in Annapolis. The first thing I said to her when I saw her was, ‘Mom, I’m going to the Navy.’ ” As a Navy SEAL, Martin served overseas five times, with each tour lasting between six and eight months. “I stressed my mom out during my tenure with the SEALs,” says Martin, founder of Herndon Capital. “You know what helped her get though some of the tough times? She’d remind herself, ‘He’s with his family— his SEALs family. He’ll be OK.’ ” Martin, the future North Shore family man, first met his future wife in San Diego. Their first official date was in Detroit—on the Monday after the “Motor City” hosted

Super Bowl XL. “Our date lasted 12 hours,” Martin says. “I took Leslie to Brother Rice. I showed her the church where I was baptized. We went to a casino in Birmingham. “I just tried to make her smile.”

The courtship lasted three years. These days, Martin is a “three-sport varsity man,” committing himself to family, professional work, and community service. His favorite reminder to his children is about making sure their giving always exceeds their taking. “If everybody adhered to that,” Martin says, “think how incredible our world would be.” The rewards of fatherhood? Too many to list here. But there’s one that warms Martin’s big heart to a kiln-on-high-setting level. “When one of my kids shows empathy for others, that’s a parent’s greatest reward,” Martin says.
