It's not quite a marriage, but the relationship homebuyers and sellers have with their real estate brokers and agents is immensely important—especially in a fast-moving, tight market the North Shore is currently experiencing.

Whether you’re putting your home on the

market or seeking to upgrade to a new home that meets your family's evolving demands, you need a seasoned professional who not only know how to price your home for sale (or what to offer if you're buying) but also how to stage it, market it, and close the deal. However, much like any relationship, finding the right match isn't always easy.

"The keys to any relationship are communication, trust, and honesty, and the same rings true for real estate," says Kelly Rynes, an agent

with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Chicago in Glenview. "You are going to be in the thick of it together, and while you may have a few tight spots along the way, experience and a high-level of service matter. If you partner with a strong, strategic agent you will succeed."

"Buyers should make sure their agent is fulltime, available, and looking at private listings," Matlin says. "Sellers are hopefully not looking at who you work for but what the agent's track record is and how you interact as a partner to get your home marketed and sold."

Marketing a property goes beyond just having a sound advertising strategy, says Milena Birov, a broker with Heritage Luxury Homes and @ properties in Winnetka.

“Sellers should ask which advertising resources the realtor has available through the realtor’s company and what the realtor’s personal input will be into the listing,” Birov says. “But they should also ask how the realtor can make the house more attractive to prospective buyers, such as de-clogging and staging.”

Experience in both the real estate business and the North Shore market, especially an agent who understands market trends in the area, is also something potential buyers and sellers should pay close attention to.

"How many years a broker has been in the business, average market times, and if a broker is willing to walk you through the process are important," says Noah Levy, a broker with Engel & Völkers in Winnetka. "A buyer should partner with a broker who is well-versed in their areas of interest and has good relationships with other brokers, as homes are often sold premarket."

According to Patti Skerving, a broker with The Skirving Group and Compass in Winnetka, there may be some less obvious questions that buyers and sellers should think about asking potential agents that might help narrow their search.

Skirving says potential clients should inquire about whether an agent will be available 24/7, how strong their negotiating skills are (and what negotiating techniques they use), how many repeat clients they've represented, and how other

"It's the same way you shop for an agent in any market. Look for a broker who is currently active and understands what's happening in real time," says Eichelberger. "Find someone who is

familiar with the general market but also specific markets, who can give you good advice, and with whom you have a good rapport."

"We have an extensive referral network with all of the trades we work with," adds Gault. "They come to us for everything from where to get a manicure to a doctor to a painter. Relationships are the foundation of our business and we strive to make lasting connections."

Ted Pickus, a broker with @properties in Highland Park, believes the best way to build a solid relationship with clients is to attend all showings and gather feedback.

"I feel it is critical to attend all showings that are requested on my listings. If someone hires me to sell their house, I feel it is my responsibility to be there when potential buyers come through," Pickus says. "Not just to educate them about the house but also the neighborhood and community the house is located in."

Sellers should also inquire about marketing and how an agent plans to get information out about their listing. They should ask any potential agent for a detailed marketing plan and the types of marketing platforms the agent's company might offer, whether it be a 3D video tour or campaigns on social media.

"A seller should focus on marketing and how a broker intends to market the home, both virtually and through print advertising," says Carly Jones, a broker with Engel & Völkers in Chicago. "How will they advertise the neighborhood and amenities? A buyer should focus on networking and how the broker finds properties … not just on the MLS." Years ago, Tübingen, Germany-born artist Bernd Haussmann began planning for a large-scale art show in New York, where he’d showcase vertical six-foot by eight-foot paintings. One series in the show, “Open Heart,” explored Haussmann’s emotions after his father’s heart operation, and the paintings featured an abundance of red.

The show opened a week after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

“Everyone said, ‘How did you know?’ But I’m not a psychic,” says Hausmann. “I’d been working on the show for a year and just painted what I paint.

A painting paints itself. It’s not the artist. The artist is only the tool, so whatever is channeled through the artist, I try not to control. Everybody either loved the series and thought I had this foresight or hated it because they thought I was jumping on the bandwagon of pain.”

That said, Haussmann describes his art as a medium to learn about both himself and the world, exploring gesture, color, and texture in paintings on metal, acrylic, glass, wood, canvas, and paper that mimic the effects of time, temperature, and the environment on surfaces. Exhibiting both nationally and internationally, Haussmann embraces the dialogue with his audience and the inclusion of the environment into his work.

He first became interested in art—or rather, creative expression—at a young age, after realizing the limitations of certain forms of language.

“I got creative, as kids do, which was just the

It’s just what they do. You’re able to create freely, openly, and innocently as a child because you aren’t limited by an agenda or worried about people liking your art or liking you. You play without thought.”

Haussmann believes the language of art is more open than other forms and is oftentimes about sharing experiences. The biggest dilemma visual artists have, he says, is to try to translate their experiences and connections to the spoken Continues on PG 20

language.

“If I go for a walk and see a mushroom, it’s only when I’m able to be still and mindless later that I can absorb the experience,” says Haussmann. “Things like color, the soft surface, and the rounded shape begin to emerge, and then I want to make a painting of the sensation of that mushroom but not an identical reproduction.”

Haussmann explains that when he later shows the finished product to someone, they become a key ingredient in the art and bring their own experiences to the viewing, connecting with what speaks to them in the painting.

“There’s nothing similar in any other language, especially the spoken word,” he reveals. “Art becomes art when you don’t think about it.”

For those reasons, Haussmann has never surrendered to a particular style, even though art school encouraged him to find an identifying voice because the art business responds well to being able to classify one’s work.

“You learn to hit the audience over the head with who you are as an artist until they get it, but I don’t feel comfortable with that,” he explains. “I make art to learn more about myself, what I am and what my job could be in the world. There is learning we are not taught in school, that doesn’t fit into the conventional way of learning, like how to get rid of your conventions and to be open, alert, curious, and brave.”

Even so, Haussmann also enjoys the exchange with fellow artists and students. He has been a mentor and educator at Lesley University, the Art Institute of Boston, and at the New Hampshire Institute of Art. Since 2014, he has been offering courses at the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, Truro; the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, Provincetown; and the Montserrat College of Art, Beverly.

“I opened my studio many years ago for artists to come in and show me their work,” says Haussmann.

“Everyone is a teacher and a student at some point, but the artist needs to be both always. I’m not interested in helping someone sharpen their pencil but rather sharpen their mind.”

Although Haussmann divides his time between the North Shore of Boston and western Maine, where he feels most comfortable and where he also works with his wife, Anne, on a 450-acre nature project, he continues to share his work at various exhibitions. To keep his own mind sharp, a current show at contemporary art gallery Anne Loucks Gallery in Glencoe features a mix of mediums and a variety of series. Haussmann, however, refers to each series as a “story” and says a gallerist is always a “translator.”

Gallery owner Anne Loucks notes, “I have always been drawn to Bernd’s vibrant fields of color, texture, and subtle layering of his surfaces, along with the emotional energy expressed in each of his paintings.

This show serves as a retrospective of sorts, with work from the past two decades representing his conceptually rich and varied career as an artist.”

Haussmann concludes, “What you will see is hopefully an interesting glimpse into what I do. In my career, I have intentionally closed doors that would have meant more fame and more money, but that’s not relevant to what I do. Art is life and life is art. It’s not a job and not hard to do when close to your heart.”

Like in 2001, Haussmann once again opens his heart out of love for art and its audiences.

DEER PATH INN CHICKEN POT PIE COMFORT FOOD NEVER GOES OUT OF STYLE. CHICKEN POT PIE IS WARM, DELICIOUS, FILLING, AND A TASTE FROM CHILDHOOD THAT WITHSTANDS TIME. 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees with oven rack in center position. Pat chicken dry. Rub with olive oil and salt. Grind black pepper over all.

2. Place chicken in roasting pan. Roast for 45 minutes to 1 hour at 400 degrees, until chicken registers 165 degrees on a thermometer.

Remove chicken to a cooling rack.

3. In a heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of the butter. Gently sauté leeks, stirring frequently for 2 minutes.

Add ½ cup of the chicken stock. Continue to simmer. Add bias-cut asparagus. Sauté for one more minute. Stir in spinach leaves just until wilted. Remove all to a large bowl. Stir in lemon zest and set aside.

4. Add remaining 4 tablespoons of butter to skillet over medium heat. Once butter has melted, sprinkle in the flour and whisk until flour has toasted and mixture is smooth and golden brown. Add remaining cup of chicken stock, whisking until smooth. Add milk, and continue to whisk. Stir in asparagus tips. Remove from heat, and pour sauce (it will be quite thick) into the bowl of reserved vegetables. Adjust seasoning to taste with salt and pepper.

5. Remove meat from chicken and shred/ cut into bite-sized pieces. Add to reserved vegetable/sauce mixture.

6. On a clean work surface, tear three pieces of parchment paper. On the first, flip the casserole dish, and trace around it, onto the paper. Cut out the shape to use as your pattern for cutting the puff pastry. Spread the second piece of parchment on a cookie sheet. Set aside.

On the third piece of parchment, unfold and gently smooth your puff pastry sheet. Gently place your pattern over the pastry. Using the tip of a sharp knife, pierce a dotted line around the pattern. Using kitchen shears, gently cut the dough along the dotted lines, being careful not to squash the pastry. Slide the pastry onto the prepared cookie sheet. Make egg wash, by whisking the egg with 1 tablespoon of milk.

Brush the pastry you have cut with egg wash.

Using a deer-shaped cookie cutter, cut a deer out of the remaining puff pastry. Place this on top of the first prepared dough. Brush deer with more egg wash.

• 1, 4-pound chicken • 1 Tbsp. olive oil • 1 tsp. salt • ½ tsp freshly cracked black pepper (three or four grinds with a pepper mill) • 5 Tbsp. unsalted butter, divided

• 1 1/2 cups chicken stock, divided • 1 large leek, washed well and trimmed of roots and dark outer leaves, remaining white and light green portion sliced into ¼ inch rounds

• 1 cup frozen green peas, thawed • 6 Tbsp. all-purpose flour • 1 cup whole milk • 1 tsp. whole-grain mustard

• 1 bunch (five stalks) fresh asparagus, tips cut into 1-inch pieces and placed in a small bowl; remainder of stalks trimmed of scales and sliced on the bias into 1/2-inch dice

• Zest of one lemon

• 2 cups fresh baby spinach leaves, washed and patted dry

• 1 egg

• 1, 10 x 15 sheet (1 lb.) frozen puff pastry dough, thawed • 1 Tbsp. milk

7. Bake pastry at 400 for 12 to 15 minutes, until puffed and golden brown. Remove cookie sheet to cooling rack.

8. Spoon pot pie filling into casserole dish.

Place in oven and heat until bubbling, about 15 minutes. Top with prepared puff pastry. Serve.

There’s a big maple tree shining in late morning sun on Green Bay Road.

It’s so colorful you think for a moment that it doesn’t jive with the prevailing mood of our times.

You know: the COVID thing, the mask thing, distancing and those other things. You push all that stuff aside and just stop to stare at this insistent beauty, an amazing autumn sight.

The colors are from the red, orange, and yellow families. And there’s no skimping on the intensity level. They’re simply showing off.

They’d have been garish anyway, but on this day, they’re lit up fully, by a dazzling bright yellow sun in a deep blue sky.

You’ve gotta stop the car. Snap a shot with your smart phone. The tiny photo surely won’t do the scene justice, but you grab it anyway.

Then you just take a long moment to look.

If the routines of our daily lives have been messed up a bit recently, nobody told this maple tree. It glows. It looks ... happy. And it makes you feel that way. A nice moment.

WRITE ON, HOMBRE THE VERDICT IS IN ON LAWYER SCOTT W. PETERSEN: GUILTY—OF MAKING US LAUGH AND THINK.

So this guy decides to launch his blog, “Renaissance Hombre,” more than nine years ago. Nearly a year later, this guy—lawyer, former assistant state’s attorney, and longtime Wilmette resident Scott W. Petersen—crafts a blog post about another guy, who’s a painter.

“So this guy,” Petersen writes, “walks up to a house and rings the doorbell. A woman answers the door. “‘Ma’am, I’m a painter. I will paint anything.’

“The woman thinks. ‘Why don’t you paint my porch? Paint it dark brown.’

“So the guy goes to work, and a few hours later, he rings the doorbell. “‘Ma’am, I’m all done. By the way, it wasn’t a Porsche—it was a Mercedes-Benz.’”

Maybe you’re laughing now. Or groaning louder than a foghorn. Or smiling, while shaking your head.

Or perhaps you’re thinking, “I can’t wait to share that joke on Thanksgiving.”

Whatever you’re doing, Petersen had elicited the response. It’s what a fun-loving cut-up with a welcoming platform does. And isn’t a little levity something everybody could use in the throes of a burdensome COVID-19 pandemic?

Petersen’s pages double as escapes.

Petersen, 73, selected his favorite posts and presented them in his first book, Renaissance Hombre: Reflections on a Well-Rounded Life (AuthorHouse, 2020, 236 pages). He calls it, “my little book.” But it’s big on entertaining, thoughtprovoking, descriptive passages that rarely exceed 300 words. Want to know what actor Bill Murray—another Wilmette man—wrote to Petersen’s daughter, Lauren (then 8 years old), after autographing a large card for her after a flight from New York to Chicago?

A retired professional baseball player sent Petersen a package from California that made Petersen leak happy teardrops. Read all about that moving moment in the “Sports Roundup” chapter.

“I enjoy writing, and I thought it would be an interesting thing to do,” Petersen, a partner at the law firm Holland & Knight in Chicago and a Wilmette resident since 1975, says of blogging his observations, ideas, and anecdotes from childhood to today. “I thought it would keep my mind sharp.

I also figured I’d learn a few things along the way.”

His effective writing style is whimsical, folksy, readable. He gives his readers welcome respites by sprinkling short, punchy sentences in each blog post.

His first “Renaissance Hombre” post appeared on July 23, 2011. The entry addresses the subject of water conservation, including Petersen’s entreaty to shower takers to turn off the water while soaping up and applying and massaging shampoo. He titled it, “JUST TURN IT OFF!” As for turning Petersen’s brain off, or at least getting him to decompress for a few seconds during his waking hours?

Good luck with that.

In addition to being a blogger/author and a lawyer specializing in intellectual property, the self-deprecating Petersen—in varying degrees of avidness—is a golfer, world traveler, guitarist, magician, linguist, collector, chef, playwright, theater actor, Chicago Literary Club member, caricaturist, and reader.

About that last avocation …

Calling Petersen a reader is akin to calling a world-class bodybuilder an exerciser. Petersen reads. Voraciously.

And to think, he probably wouldn’t have applied to a college had he not heard some of his friends talk about going to college late in his senior year at Forest View High School in Arlington Heights.

“My father, Peter, never finished high school, and my mother, LaVerne, never went to college,” says Petersen, who went to Prospect High School in Mount Prospect for two y e a r s before FVHS opened in 1 9 6 3 .

“One day I mentioned ‘college’ to my father, who knew one guy who had attended college. His name was Mr. Swanson. So I talked to Mr. Swanson.”

Mr. Swanson was a graduate of Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. He secured a campus interview date with the college’s director of admissions for the 17-year-old Scott.

One problem: Augustana’s freshman class was full. Another problem: Petersen’s transcript was full of not-so-great grades.

caught the director’s eye, providing just enough application ammo to earn one of the director’s discretionary spots in the class. The young man who had skipped second grade was put on academic probation, months before the start of his freshman year at the liberal arts college.

I thought writing would keep my mind sharp. I also figured I’d learn a few things along the way.

The former FVHS swimmer had to navigate his way to a C average after one semester or face a restart elsewhere. Petersen carded five C’s and a B, with his best grade coming in … swimming. He majored in political science and history and got his law degree at Chicago-Kent College of Law at Illinois Institute of Technology.

“My experience in Boy Scouts was pivotal,” Petersen says. “After becoming an Eagle Scout, everything opened up for me—college, law school, career.

Plus I met my wife, Donna, through a good friend of mine at Augustana while I was in law school.

Diane set us up.”

Their first date started at a racetrack in Melrose Park and ended with dinner. Win-place-show, followed by chow.

“Donna is an amazing woman,” Petersen says.

“She has to be, right? To put up with me. I love her, respect her, admire her. I think the world of her. Best mother, best grandmother. Perfect. I’m looking at a picture from our wedding day, as I speak. The two of us are standing in front of a 1968 Camaro.

“I remember feeling incredibly nervous that day.”

Today, he has the confidence, while wearing a “Mr. Excitement” apron, to make his wife’s favorite childhood meal—meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and fresh beets—and blow away anyone with taste buds with his spaghetti carbonara. He practically has to don sunglasses and apply a few coats of sunscreen each time he’s around granddaughters Eve and Elin, because they are “amazing bright lights of joy,” he says. Daughter Lauren continues to be one of his inspirations.

But the man who’s grateful for every second of every day worries what the pandemic is doing to young people.

“Depression and sadness and loneliness, they’re all going up,” Petersen says. “We should do anything we can do to help.”

Reading Petersen’s engaging book could be a start for some, a quick pick-me-up.

“Sit back—or lie back—and read one or two [blog posts],” Petersen writes in the book’s Introduction.

“And come back again tomorrow for more.”
