Karen O’Sullivan’s bright and breezy boutique siblings Share and Shack stand side-byside on Wilmette Avenue. It’s about an hour before opening time, and with the morning sun lighting up the soft palette of the merchandise, six-week-old Shack looks every bit the Midwest beachtown baby that Sullivan wanted to create next door to Share. “We live in a beach town,” says O’Sullivan. “In fact, the North Shore is a string of towns with gorgeous beaches— from Evanston on the south to Lake Bluff on the North. But unlike the East Coast where I grew up, where every beach town had little shops with their own merchandise that celebrated that special, local feel, the North Shore didn’t have that.” Until now. Riffing on a concept both charming and original, O’Sullivan carefully curates merchandise at Shack that changes frequently with “pop-up” themes. This gives the term “beach town” a North Shore flair that works throughout the year, in hot weather and cold. O’Sullivan calls her approach at Shack a “modern general store” with a mix of merchandise that runs the gamut from home décor and fun wearables to hostess gifts and jewelry. NEWS LOVE SHACK Cont. from PG 1 Harvest Juicery in Chicago. Since the Shack opened in September, late summer displays have given way to a “Sweater Weather” theme of cool-weather coziness. There are chunky sweaters, mittens, blankets, and pomtopped hats knit in cloud-soft bulky yarns, plus pumpkin spice flavored treats. And in the next few weeks, the shop will morph again—with holiday-themed displays of home decor, jewelry, gift options and wardrobe pieces. One feature at Shack that stays year ‘round is a section devoted to O’Sullivan’s 600NS line of North Shore coastal-inspired goods(600 are the three shared numbers in North Shore zip codes). That line includes T-shirts, sweatshirts, baseball hats, and pouches. Other items feature one of eight different beach token-styled logos, representing each of the North Shore’s beach towns. Shack donates one dollar for every 600NS item sold to Chicago Surfrider Foundation. But even the 600NS merchandise evolves, as O’Sullivan adds new items to the offerings. “We introduce a few new things every few months,” she says. “We have a wool beanie and a polar fleece zip coming next.” Designing clothing, store displays, and curating an ever-changing assortment of offerings is something O’Sullivan has loved doing since she was a child. “Playing store was my favorite thing to do when I was little,” she says. “Even unloading the dishwasher, I would pretend the buttons on the oven next to it were cash register keys. As I removed each plate from the dishwasher, I would press the buttons on the stove as if I was ringing up a sale.” O’Sullivan also loved the fashion industry. Growing up in Stanton, New Jersey, an hour away from New York City, Karen can remember how much she enjoyed going to the costume exhibits at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “I always knew fashion was what I wanted to explore. It’s so expressive and I find it very transformative,” she says. O’Sullivan attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, which led to editing and styling jobs at fashion and lifestyle magazines, including Woman’s Day. Relocating to Chicago with her husband more than 20 years ago, O’Sullivan left an advertising career to raise her three daughters and launched her first clothing line. Called “Grosgrain,” each piece in the line had “a little shot of grosgrain ribbon in it,” O’Sullivan recalls. “That line was really my first pop-up—my way of having a creative outlet while I was raising

that I stick with certain rules for what I bring into both Share and Shack. I don’t buy a lot of anything so the turnover is constant. I rarely reorder anything. And I change the displays often.” But the biggest plus? “I keep the price point accessible,” O’Sullivan concludes. “As a buyer, it’s much easier to find beautiful things that are expensive. But I’ve made it my priority to find that same look and feel at an affordable price. I think that’s what people have come to really love about the stores.”

I build each story knowing exactly what that vignette is going to look like when it hits the floor.” Originally opened above Norm’s Car Wash, Share moved into the current location two years ago, quadrupling the space. “And the business grew exponentially,” says O’Sullivan. “I think a big part of the success is

In 1912, Mary Garretson opened a thrift store to provide affordable clothing in Winnetka as part of the Clothing Sales Committee of the Relief & Aid Society. The shop also provided an outlet for charitable donations that could directly benefit neighbors in need. More than a century (and a few moves) later, the shop continues to serve multiple needs in

the Winnetka community—most recently with an upscale twist. Offering high-end clothing, accessories, housewares, and home furnishings, the shop was transformed seven years ago when Jenifer Hoffman, a former visual merchandising manager at the Gap, came on board. Hoffman, who was recently named Winnetka’s 2019 Business Woman of the Year, is credited for much of the Winnetka Thrift Shop’s recent success and an ongoing commitment to “re-

purpose with a purpose.” With the help of a small staff of merchandisers and numerous volunteers, the store has become a paradise for bargain shoppers and treasure hunters alike—with proceeds exclusively benefiting and supporting the Counseling Center of the North Shore, a private nonprofit mental health center located in Winnetka. Starting on Friday, November 1, the Winnetka Thrift Shop staff invites the community to stop by for its annual holiday spectacular. Doors

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION RAIN DIDN’T PUT A DAMPER ON NORTH SHORE COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL’S HOMECOMING AND REUNION WEEKEND. Although wet and stormy conditions threatened North Shore Country Day’s Centennial Homecoming and Reunion Weekend, it didn’t stop about 600 alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff, friends, and neighbors from returning to campus to celebrate in late September. Alumni from as far away as Chile and the United Kingdom returned to campus with their friends and families to reconnect with former classmates, faculty, and staff. The oldest alumnus in attendance was Pete Henderson (’47) of Evanston, and a group of alumni from the Class of 1949 returned to celebrate their 70th reunion. Pete Henderson’s daughter, Murph Henderson (’83) of Philadelphia, returned to campus with her dad for her own belated 35th reunion and said she was moved by the weekend’s events. “There were so many ways to gather—on the lawn, in the Upper School, for a tour, in a home,” she explained. “I was reminded that the most engaging conversations often happen with classmates who were not close friends in the old days. People have chosen fascinating paths.” Alumni and their guests mingled with current and former faculty at a Friday evening cocktail party and opening reception for the alumni art show in the newly renovated Hall Library and adjacent John Almquist Gallery, which had officially reopened just hours before. The opening Centennial year show, which runs through December 6, features the work of former NSCD art teacher John Almquist and 22 alumni artists, representing nine decades. Meanwhile, students and parents packed the Mac Gym to cheer on the volleyball teams, and food trucks from several local eateries offered tasty treats. On Saturday, alumni, parents of alumni, and

NSCD varsity, junior varsity, and middle school teams celebrated on-campus victories throughout the weekend—winning seven and tying one of the nine home games that were not rained out. The varsity field hockey team defeated Lake Forest Academy (4-0); the varsity boys’ soccer team defeated Lisle Senior High School (2-0); the varsity girls’ volleyball team defeated Mather High School (2-0) and Northtown Academy (2-0).

former faculty gathered in the auditorium for a special program featuring the world premiere of the school’s Centennial documentary: “Pioneers Along the Road—100 Years of North Shore Country Day School.” Head of School Tom Flemma also gave a school update and acknowledged all the past recipients of the Francis R. Stanton ’27 Alumni Recognition. The Stanton recognition is given to alumni whose lives exemplify the school’s motto, “Live and Serve.” The

morning program concluded with a traditional sing-along of Gilbert & Sullivan and other favorite tunes. Additional screenings of the documentary occurred every half hour from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. There were plenty of activities for students and families all day Saturday, beginning with the Little Raiders Field Hockey Clinic. This yearly activity gives children age 4 and up an opportunity to learn the basics of the game from NSCD players

In 2007, a Wilmette third grader named Nicole Basil thought it might be a good idea to collect bicycles kids didn’t need any more and build a charity around finding new homes for them. It was a simple concept but the Pedal Power nonprofit that continues to thrive 12 years later is nothing short of sensational. “My little third grade mind without any limitations said, why don’t we start our own charity?” says Basil, now a college student who has turned over operations to a pair of Wilmette Junior High School eighth graders. Cailyn FitzGerald and her brother Owen say they are continuing the mission Basil started all those years ago—to collect outgrown and unused bikes from families around the North Shore and Western Suburbs and provide them to kids on the honor roll in the Chicago Public Schools. With winter on the horizon, the siblings are

gearing up for Pedal Power’s annual bike drive, to be held from 9 a.m. to noon on November 1 in Wilmette and throughout the North Shore. “Today we are in 12 different towns with several sponsors who have all helped to make it possible,” Cailyn told The North Shore Weekend. In addition to Wilmette,

Pedal Power collection sites can be found in Northbrook, Glenview, Lake Forest, Winnetka, Evanston, Skokie, Libertyville, Palatine, Elmhurst, and Chicago. “We have collected over 3,500 bikes in the past 10 years that are given to kids on the honor roll in the Chicago Public Schools,” she says, adding that the bikes donated are preferably in gently used condition and in good working order. The main school to benefit from Pedal Power is Cesar Chavez Multicultural Academic Center. Bikes in need of repair are also donated to Northside Learning Center where the bike parts are used for educational purposes to help children with learning disabilities. “I am so excited to be a part of Pedal Power this year and we’re working hard to make it the best year ever,” says Cailyn. “I hope everyone in the community will join in our mission and help spread the word about this important cause.” For more information or to find a donation site in your area, visit gopedalpower.com. Birdie, birdie, birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie. Behold Lake Forest High School’s collective, astounding 7-under-par performance on the fifth hole of the second day at last weekend’s Class 3A state boys’ golf tournament in Bloomington. “Huge,” Scouts senior Patrick Moorhead says of the dinky number of shots—including junior Charlie Haggerty’s eagle—his team needed to solve the par-5 hole at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course. Bigger news than that on October 19? Lake Forest High School catapulted from there to claim the fifth state championship in program history and fourth under head coach Jim Matheson. The Scouts, who trailed Glenbrook North High School’s Spartans by 10 strokes after Round 1 October 18, won the tournament by an impressive eight strokes with a 601 total. Glenbrook North finished runner-up (609), ahead of third-place New Trier High School (611). “We knew we’d be fine after the first round,” says Moorhead, who was better than fine by taking runner-up honors with a 3-under-par 141 (72-69), one stroke behind medalist Ben Sluzas (71-69) of Lockport Township High School. “Our game plan,” last year’s ninth-place finisher at state adds, “was to simplify things, play our game. And have each guy pick up two stokes on his Glenbrook North counterpart. We all played with the mindset, ‘This is gettable.’ ” LFHS junior Flynn Bradley chipped in for an eagle on the par-4 15th hole en route to a 75. He ended up tying sophomore teammate Jack Marshall for 20th place in the individual standings with a 79-75; Marshall shot 78-76. “Flynn’s eagle,” Moorhead says, “was clutch. That sealed it for us, big-time.” Haggerty (25th-place tie, 82-73) wound up as the Scouts’ No. 4 scorer, ahead of juniors Pierce Grieve (79-77) and Colin Jasper (79-78). Moorhead’s iron play was sharp all weekend. He carded nine birdies in 36 holes and deserved every calorie of his post-tourney feast at a downstate Portillo’s: cheeseburger, fries, chocolate milkshake. “We ate and talked about our golf shots,” Moorhead says. “Our coach, such a great coach, was super pumped.” The school plans to honor the state champion Scouts at halftime of the home football game against Stevenson High School October 25. New Trier: The Trevians bagged the program’s fifth state trophy in seven years with their thirdplace showing last weekend. Junior Charlie Creamean led the way with a sturdy ninth-place

The Ramblers, who had captured the Eisenhower Invitational title at Hickory Point on September 21, toured the same course October 18-19 and finished in third place (636) at the Class 2A state tournament. Senior Grace Kryscio paced the effort with

a 16th-place-tying 79-75, followed by freshman Bailey Bitbabo (75-82), senior Mary Boesen (78-82), and senior Cate O’Brien (84-81). Sophomore Kendall Beil (91-89) and junior Caroline Magner (88-92) also competed for the Wilmette school at the par-72 layout. Stevenson (601) and Barrington (602) high schools finished 1-2. “We could see our potential at the Eisenhower Invite, and momentum pushed us from there,” third-year Loyola Academy coach Carli McKenney recalls. “They stayed focused at state, took it one shot at a time, and never got ahead of themselves.” Kryscio, the club’s top finisher at the Hoffman Estates Sectional on October 14, sandwiched birdies around a double-bogey on the back 9 of her second round at state. She carded a team-best four birdies in the final round of her prep career. “Grace came on strong for us at the end of the season,” McKenney says. “She’s a solid allaround player.” O’Brien also emerged as an integral Rambler in the last three weeks, contributing steady rounds as the team’s No. 4 scorer. Her 81 in Round 2 at state helped Loyola Academy hold off fourth-place finisher Lincoln-Way Central High School (641) for the third-place prize— Loyola Academy’s first top-three state finish since the program earned its third straight runner-up trophy in 2015. “Cate’s scores were important, and Mary Boesen was a rock for us all season,” says McKenney, a former golfer at Carmel Catholic High School and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Par for the course, off the courses, for McKenney’s crew all fall? “The girls truly liked being around each other,” the coach says. “They loved the high school golf experience. I’ll never forget the van rides to our meets, with music blaring, the girls singing, and the girls getting pumped up to compete.” New Trier: The Trevians finished in eighth place at state (650) behind junior Audrey Tir’s 79-79 (28th-place tie). Come As You Were EVANSTONIAN SUZANNE CLORES IS SET TO HOST AN ‘EXTRAORDINARY’ PODCAST LISTENING AND COSTUME PARTY THAT EXPLORES PAST LIVES. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Ever had the urge to place a bunch of orange traffic cones in a high school hallway and observe your peers’ reactions to them? Suzanne Clores, along with several of her friends at Leonia High School in New Jersey, had—and acted on it—decades ago. “We’d do crazy experiments,” Clores, 48, recalls from her seat on a park bench in her hometown of Evanston. “We had a lot of freedom at the school. It was a small school, with maybe 105 students in my class, in a small town located about three miles from Manhattan. My friends were creative; we all did theater. “Nobody,” she adds, “knocked any of the cones over.” Clores invites us on a November 7 journey to the Colvin House mansion in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood. It’s where a unique event will be staged by The Extraordinary Project—founded by Clores in late 2017—celebrating the questions we have about intuition, psychic phenomena, and other peculiar incidents that strike us, change us, and guide us to see the invisible threads connecting our lives—even if they can’t be explained by contemporary science. “The event is a launch party for the second season of The Extraordinary Project’s podcast series,” Clores says. “It explores the concept of past lives and the spirit realm. We’re encouraging people to wear costumes in the style of Victorian-era England, when spiritualist séances were in full fashion.” The clever Clores dubbed the party “Come As You Were.” “I haven’t picked out my outfit yet,” says Clores, also a writer, university instructor, parent, and spouse. “You should start thinking about what you’re going to wear.” Clores’ fascination with other realms— “mystical realms,” she clarifies—took off when she took the course Enchanted Imagination at Columbia University in New York. The students read books by William Blake, J.R.R. Tolkien, Mary Shelley, and others. “The professor was excited every day in class,” says Clores, who earned her MFA in fiction at the University of Arizona and has taught literature classes at Northwestern University and National Louis University. “He was so into the books. To him, the earth turned on these books.

“Did you know the story about how Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein?” she adds. “Supposedly she wrote it in one night, after imagining the most horrifying abuse of power. It’s also about abandonment and loss— probably influenced by the time when invisible things, like electricity, were being discovered.” Clores’ book Memoirs of a Spiritual Outsider was published in 2000. It’s a memoir and ethnography of alternate spiritual practices. The book was, according to an online blurb, “one of the first to mirror young women’s yearning for a spiritual path they can fully and wholeheartedly embrace.” Season One of The Extraordinary Project’s podcast series starts with “Dearly Beloved” (September 30, 2017). It examines the phenomenon After Death Communication, or ADC. The compelling description of the digital audio file reads, “This debut episode journeys into the stories and science of our most precious last moments with our dead.” Episode Two spotlights the Second Sight, more formally known as Precognition or Presentiment. Learn all about recent and historical evidence of “ordinary people tapping into the backwards flow of time.” The rest of the episodes explore the life of a psychic energy healer, and gave Clores reason to wonder if perhaps psychic people were really seeing something. Clores wasn’t an ordinary student at Leonia HS. Far from one. Voted “Best Personality” by her peers, she was the engaging friend and resolute leader of a group that had a noble mission: Transcend cliques. What would her high school friends say about what she’s up to today? “They would not be shocked,” a smiling Clores says. “No one I knew in high school would be shocked.” We return to the details about The Extraordinary Project’s “Come As You Were” party in November, the one that starts at 7 p.m. at the George Maherdesigned Colvin House at 5940 North Sheridan Road. Clores hopes 50 people, at least, will appear in creative garb at the yellow brick, Prairie Style, American Foursquare mansion. “It’ll be a safe place to discover the intellectual history of spirit communication, as well as to entertain the hopes and dreams about the afterlife ... all those questions that many of

us have while trying to fall asleep at night,” says Clores, who, following an introduction to the podcast series and a listening session of the notyet-released first episode of Season Two, will certainly enthrall all during a Q&A segment. “Is there life after death?” she adds. “Are there ways to think about this that aren’t scary or weird or creepy? Is there a way to celebrate the possibility?”

It’ll be a safe place to discover the intellectual history of spirit communication, as well as to entertain the hopes and dreams about the afterlife ... all those questions that many of us have while trying to fall asleep at night.

The daughter of Robert Clores, a former CBS television set designer, and Virginia Clores, a former Columbia University administrator and current competitive ballroom dancer, Suzanne has worked freelance as an event planner, a fact checker for magazines such as Vogue, GLAMOUR and Reader’s Digest, and as an assistant to Storycorps Founder David Isay when she lived in New York. She moved to Evanston in 2004. Clores’ “Come As You Were” soiree happens to be five days after her birthday, which is none other than November 2, or All Souls’ Day. It’s the day when observing Christians typically remember deceased relatives. “It’s kind of perfect, isn’t it?” Clores says. We’ll see you there.
