Spook-tacular Stories TWO NORTH SHORE EVENTS EMBRACE THE HALLOWEEN SEASON WITH SPINE-TINGLING TALES AND DARING ENDEAVORS. BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Halloween on the North Shore is never limited to one Hallows’ Eve. Between the Highwood Pumpkin Festival and Ragdale’s “Rags to Witches” event, children of all ages are tiptoeing out in costume from mid-October through the end of the month. While those two popular festivals are over, there are still some fun ways to get into the Halloween spirit. Lake Bluff History Museum is hosting “Spirits in the Night,” an evening of storytelling fun, next Wednesday, October 30. Further down the shore just south of the Evanston border, Evanstonian (and president of the Evanston Chamber of Commerce) is hosting an immersive “All Hallows Eve” party at her restored Colvin House mansion this weekend on Saturday, October 26. The Lake Bluff event is the second program in the museum’s Distilling History Series. Created to embrace the darker side of Halloween, “Spirits in the Night,” invites friends of Continued on PG 10

IN PERFECT HARMONY WINNETKA NATIVE AND SILICON VALLEY ENTREPRENEUR ALYSSA RAPP RELEASES A NEW BOOK ABOUT LIFE HACKS AND LEADERSHIP. BY EMMA REYNOLDS AND SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

While life in the 21st century seems overwhelming, Alyssa Rapp has found time to do it all. The Winnetka native, who spent the past 10 years as an entrepreneur in Silicon Valley, traded in mild California winters last year for a more well-rounded life in Winnetka. And if that’s not impressive enough, her new book Leadership & Life Hacks shares tips for fellow moms, wives, entrepreneurs, and executives. Several events throughout the North Shore this month have been featuring Rapp and her refreshing perspective on navigating life. Former Chairman and CEO of Playboy Enterprises Christie Hefner says the book is a perfect reflection of its author’s intellectual agility and commitment to being a lifelong learner. “I can’t imagine anyone not both enjoying and benefiting from its useful stories and suggestions about making your life more efficient and impactful,” says Hefner, who is also regarded as a strategic advisor and progressive activist. “My friend Alyssa Rapp is a force of nature,” adds Marissa Mayer, CEO and co-founder of Lumi Labs and former CEO of Yahoo. “Smart, savvy, fierce, loyal. She knows what she wants out of life, isn’t afraid to be honest and vocal about it, and will go after what she wants with all of her gusto. She has many great stories to tell and a ton of useful ‘hacks’ as she calls them. Continued on PG 10 Alyssa Rapp PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR

“Debbie was a fantastic realtor. She was extremely responsive and understood what we wanted in our home almost instantaneously. She was extremely knowledgeable of our targeted geographical area and was able to leverage that knowledge to provide us a wide array of houses to look at. Furthermore, her knowledge of the market was instrumental in negotiating a purchase price well below asking. I’d recommend her to anyone looking to purchase a new home in the northern suburbs of Chicago.” - AE

NEWS IN PERFECT HARMONY Cont. from PG 1 I’m delighted that she is sharing her experience and insights broadly through this book.” In speaking to Rapp about her own story and what brought her back to the North Shore, we learned that it wasn’t until her father-in-law passed away in 2017 that she and her husband, Hal Morris (also a Chicago native) and their two young daughters, Audrey and Henriette, decided it was time to return home. With Rapp’s mother, Fay, and stepfather, Daniel Levin, still based in Winnetka, and Morris’s mom based in Munster, Indiana, the timing was perfect. “My family loves Winnetka,” says Rapp, who will speak at The Lake Forest Shop’s Entrepreneurship Club on Thursday, October 24, and is scheduled to appear at the Book Stall in Winnetka on Sunday, November 3. “It’s a wonderful community on the North Shore, and it’s a wonderful place to raise children. The values are so solid, and the schools are wonderful.” Rapp attended New Trier Township High School, where she was a competitive gymnast, before earning her BA in Political Science and Art History at Yale University in 2000. Though she always had an interest in business, Rapp’s political influence from her parents inspired her to work on Hillary Clinton’s campaign for her first senate race and also serve as national finance director for Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (IL-9) after her undergrad. “My parents are very political,” she says. “My mom was the U.S. ambassador to the Netherlands under President Obama, and my stepfather is a real estate developer in Chicago, who is known for his creation of the East Bank Club. He has also done an extraordinary amount of mixed-income housing and been a leader—a pioneer really—in the public housing world for the past 60 years.” After two and a half years as Congresswoman SPOOK-TACULAR STORIES Cont. from PG 1 the museum and audience members to share spine-tingling tales from Lake Bluff History Museum tombs (as well as their own personal experiences). The spooky stories will be paired with specialty cocktails and snacks. Organizers say that if you have a story to tell, they’d love to hear it at this event. Please indicate your interest, when purchasing tickets for yourself—or your group—by selecting the “storyteller” ticket option. They will include as many audience storytellers as time allows. Should they have more storytellers than time available, guests will be randomly selected to tell their tales. To

Schakowsky’s finance director and six months traveling in Australia and New Zealand, Rapp packed up for California, where she earned her MBA at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. Here, Rapp met her husband and founded her first startup: Bottlenotes, Inc., the leading interactive media company in the U.S. wine industry, which she sold in 2015. Rapp also founded AJR Ventures, a firm providing strategic advisory services to companies ranging from startups to Fortune 500’s in the technology, beverage, and luxury goods categories. Yet it was her most recent career move in Chicago that had her revving up her entrepreneurial engine yet again. In late 2017, Rapp was appointed CEO of Surgical Solutions, LLC., a private equity-backed firm

allow more stories to be shared, stories should be no longer than five minutes in length. This weekend’s event at Colvin House, a historic mansion and event space in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago, is held in partnership with Pivot Arts. Featuring immersive performances and an eerie atmosphere, “All Hallow’s Eve” invites guests to tour the mansion to discover secret rites and rituals. Immersive performances will culminate in what Valavanis describes as “the darkest of dance parties.” Costumes are highly encouraged. “Pivot Arts is known for its innovative, engaging performances,” she says. “I’m thrilled to be collaborating with them to produce this year’s Halloween event. It’s sure to delight— or, in this case, terrify!” The histor ic Colvin House has hosted Pivot Arts for multiple events since opening to the public two years ago, including immersive theater, music, and dance. The 1909 George Maher mansion is also the second location of E v a n s t on - b a s e d Creative Coworking. In addition to pro-

in the health care space owned by Chicago-based private equity firm Sterling Partners. Like a true entrepreneur, Rapp is always excited to learn, grow, and be challenged in an unfamiliar space. “I love starting companies; it’s fun, challenging and creative,” she says. And when it comes to the Chicago startup scene, Rapp sings nothing but praises. “It’s not as flashy of a brand of entrepreneurship as it is on the West Coast, and in some ways, it’s more substance-based. It’s just a slightly smaller pond with the same values but without the pretension.” However, her ties to California aren’t fully severed. In 2014, Rapp began teaching a course annually at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business called Global Dynamics of the Wine Industry, which focuses on the management of global wine businesses and the economic, regulatory, and market trends of the industry. “This class has been a wonderful way to stay connected and to get to share a decade of knowledge and transfer it back,” she says, citing her experience at Bottlenotes, Inc., which received the “People’s Choice Award” at the Empact Showcase in the U.N. for the top 100 companies with founders under 25. Rapp was named as one of Inc. Magazine’s “30 Under 30” coolest entrepreneurs in America and is consistently named one of the wine industry’s top 100 most influential people by intowine.com. Equally as important as her business ventures is her civic work, which was inspired by her parents at a young age. “Even though I’m an entrepreneur and an executive by day, I’m on the board of the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA),” she says. Rapp has also served on the boards of Spark and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. And earlier this summer, she was appointed as an adjunct professor at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business. “I love both teaching and the board service work

I do,” she says. “It’s a lot of work and time, and the reason I do it in addition to a CEO job and being a wife and a mother, is because I grew up in a family where giving back and a life of service mattered. My parents are extraordinary leaders in the community, and they set this value system of service and hard work.” Rapp may be a multi-hyphenate, with titles such as: entrepreneur, businesswoman, startup founder, CEO, civic leader, author, professor, mother, and wife, but it’s her humble attitude and self-motivation that has made her so successful. “Everything requires extraordinary amounts of hard work; nothing is easy,” she says. “My husband, when I was in the most challenging parts of my entrepreneurial life the first time around, would constantly remind me that until it’s the ninth inning and the third out, keep swinging. As we’ve seen with our own Chicago Cubs, you never know what can happen.” Rapp says she looks forward to sharing more about her personal journey, and the experiences she outlines in Leadership & Life Hacks, at upcoming book talks both at Lake Forest Book Store and at The Book Stall in Winnetka. Described as “the perfect guidebook for anyone hungry to be more efficient and effective,” her new tome takes you into the board room and into her own home—providing invaluable strategies for everything from leading a meeting with key stakeholders and managing a household to answering emails and taking colleagues to rock concerts. Rapp will appear from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at The Lake Forest Shop, 265 E. Market Square in Lake Forest, on Thursday, October 24. For more information, call 847-234-0548 or visit thelakeforestshop.com. She will also appear at The Book Stall, 811 Elm Street, in Winnetka, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 3. For more information, call 847-446-8880 or visit thebookstall.com.

SUNDAY SALON THE ART CENTER HIGHLAND PARK PRESENTS PEABODY AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKER BOB HERCULES ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 17. EDITED BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

The Art Center Highland Park’s (TACHP) new Sunday Salon series is already picking up a devoted audience and next month, it continues with a Peabody Award-winning filmmaker. Bob Hercules, documentary producer and director, will appear and talk about scenes from his films at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 17, as part of TACHP’s free Sunday series. “We picked Bob for this series after I met him at his film Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise during a screening at the Renaissance Place Cinema in Highland Park,” TACHP Executive Director James M. Lynch explains. “He struck me as an inspiring storyteller and inspiration is one of our three core principals at TACHP, so he was very obviously a fit for our programming.” Hercules lives in Evanston and works in and around the Chicago area—except when he’s on location, as he was when he directed the film The Gate, The Dawn of the Baha’i Faith, with locations in southern Spain. His work has been seen widely on PBS, Discovery Channel, IFC, TLC and in film festivals around the world. He is also coowner of Media Process Group, a Chicago-based production company. Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise, premiered at

the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, won 19 awards on three continents, a Peabody Award in 2018, and was nominated for an NAACP Image Award. Hercules also made two films focusing on dance: Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance and Bill T. Jones: A Good Man. His 2009 Radical Disciple: The Story of Father Pfleger chronicles the radical Bob Hercules priest whose controversial tactics to fight racism put him at odds with the Catholic hierarchy. That film was named Best Documentary at the 2009 Big Muddy Film Festival, was the opening night film at the 2009 Black Harvest Film Festival, and aired on WTTW Chicago in 2010. In 2008, Hercules directed the Barack Obama and Michelle Obama biography videos for Obama’s presidential campaign website. He also

directed Obama’s 2007 Presidential announcement video in Springfield, Illinois. Hercules’ 2006 documentary, Senator Obama Goes to Africa, is a chronicle of Obama’s momentous 2006 trip to Africa, including an emotional visit to Kisumu, Kenya—homeland of his late father. It is currently in home video release from First Run Features. Hercules’ acclaimed 2006 feature documen-

tary, Forgiving Dr. Mengele, tells the remarkable story of Auschwitz survivor and former “Mengele twin” Eva Mozes Kor, whose decision to forgive the perpetrators as an act of self-healing sparked a firestorm of criticism. The film won the Special Jury Prize at the 2006 Slamdance Film Festival and the Crystal Heart Award at the 2006 Heartland Film Festival. It is currently in home video release from First Run Features. TACHP’s new Sunday Salon series is a free public event hosted once every four to six weeks in its galleries. The goal is to feature artist panels in discussion, dance troupes such as Chicago’s Visceral Dance Company, play and poetry readings, and other community programs that enhance TACHP’s reputation as a robust source of cultural programing on the North Shore. Founded in 1960, TACHP is a nonprofit visual arts organization that provides a visual arts education to Highland Park and surrounding communities. The Art Center of Highland Park is located at 1957 Sheridan Road in Highland Park. For more information or to sign up for the TACHP newsletter, call 847-432-1888 or email Info@theartcenterhp. org. Reservations for the Bob Hercules event are suggested (via TACHP’s Facebook page) as seating will be limited.

LIFESTYLE & ARTS

Socials Highwood Design District Launch Party Photography courtesy of the Highwood Chamber of Commerce The Highwood Chamber of Commerce with Presenting Sponsor Sherwin Williams hosted the first annual Design District during a launch party at the newly opened 28 Mile Vodka. Guests enjoyed an opportunity to network with local professionals in home design, improvement, landscape architecture, and more, while sipping on 28 Mile Vodka’s handcrafted cocktails. The party kicked off a two day-long celebration of all-things design and featured live dueling pianos, art installations, and bites from local favorites— Salt Creek Tacos, Bent Fork, Cluckers, and Sunset Foods.

THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Nate Van Zelst watches a college football game on TV at home in Glenview. Or maybe it’s a National Football League game. A kicker trots out to the field. He then prepares to boot a field goal. That’s when Van Zelst, a junior kicker/punter at Loyola Academy, starts to feel uneasy. He’s pulling for the kicker to make the field goal. Pulling hard. No matter the team for which the kicker plays. “I get more nervous watching other kickers than I do when I’m about to attempt a field goal in a game,” says the 6-foot, 185-pound Van Zelst, who has connected from 49 and 48 yards this fall, the latter field goal coming in Loyola Academy’s 46-14 defeat of visiting Benet Academy on October 12. “I want them to make every kick.” You want Nate Van Zelst in the middle of it all, with a football game on the line. You want Nate Van Zelst at a free-throw line, basketball game all tied up, 1 second left on the clock. And you want Nate Van Zelst at the controls in a cockpit, as the plane you’re in suddenly jerks to the left, veers to the right, and then descends rapidly. “Nate’s not only talented; he also has the characteristics, the personality, the demeanor you want in a kicker,” Loyola Academy football coach John Holecek says. “He’s so steady, calm, and cool. “It’s like he’s a 30-year-old,” the former University of Illinois and NFL linebacker adds. He’s ranked 21st nationally among Class of 2021 kickers by Kohl’s Professional Camps, a Wisconsin-based organization that trains high school, collegiate, and NFL specialists—kickers, punters, and long snappers. College recruiters trust and rely heavily on Kohl’s evaluations of the nation’s top special-team prospects. Van Zelst met Cleveland Browns rookie kicker Austin Seibert several years ago at a Kohl’s Camp when Seibert, a kicker/punter in college, was on his way to making 63 of 79 career field-goal attempts for the University of Oklahoma. “It was amazing for me, watching him, noticing his techniques, talking with him,” says Van Zelst, 3-for-4 in field goals through seven games this season. “What separates the men from the boys in kicking is the mental side, because kicking is 70 percent mental, in my opinion. You have to be strong mentally to get anywhere as a kicker.” Van Zelst was a wide receiver for the 5th grade football team at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School in Glenview when the squad needed a kicker. Van Zelst was game to give kicking a try. But it wasn’t until his 7th grade season that Van Zelst realized, with hard work, the strength and accuracy of his right leg could lead to a promising future in the sport.

state championship last fall in Champaign, where Van Zelst tallied seven points—on field goals of 24 and 37 yards, plus an extra point—in a 17-10 triumph over Brother Rice. “My favorite part of kicking is seeing the reaction of my teammates when I make a field goal or do something else that helps the team,” says Van Zelst, a team-first teammate who praises senior long snapper Christo Kelly and senior holder John Grogan every chance he gets. He produced an example of “something else” in last weekend’s game against Benet Academy, which entered the game with a 6-0 record. On a 4th-and-8, Van Zelst clutched the long snap, faked a punt, and raced toward the Ramblers’ sideline to pick up a first down. Heart of the Matter AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION WALKER NIKKI NOCERA HITS THE PAVEMENT FOR HER LATE, BELOVED FATHER AND HEART DISEASE AWARENESS. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Nikki Nocera had just delivered her campaign speech for the office of senior class president at Chaney High School when she had an “uh-oh” moment. Her male opponent at the school in Youngstown, Ohio, hit the stage in a Batman outfit, his cape flowing, his peers roaring their approval before he had uttered a word. Nikki lost the election. Now 48 years old and a Wilmette resident since 2014, Nocera—Vice President and Chief of Staff to Exelon Utilities CEO Anne Pramaggiore after a 15-year career as a litigator—had a real-life superhero for 42 years. Her father, policeman Carl Nocera, was Hollywood handsome, ran regularly to make sure his waist would never expand beyond 33 inches, and revered Frank Sinatra and Pavarotti. He bonded with a young Nikki by playing cards and board games with her, by walking with her, by watching 60 Minutes and Sunday morning news shows with her, and by reading newspapers with her. “My father was very influential in my life,” says Nocera, the wife of Jesse Campbell and the mother of their children, Chloe, 13, and Phoebe, 11. “He was an awesome judge of people, and he was incredibly family-focused. He also had a big personality, the kind that helped me prepare for the legal and business worlds; I’ve never been intimidated by big personalities in those fields.” Her superhero suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 70, while running in Las Vegas in 2013. He’d seen a doctor four days earlier—without having undergone a stress test or a coronary calcium scan. Had he been administered either, the doctor would have discovered a 98-percent blockage in one of Carl Nocera’s arteries and treated it with immediate medical intervention. “My father’s death was preventable,” Nikki insists, “and that’s why I’m doing what I’m doing. I walk to honor him.” Nikki Nocera spearheaded Exelon Utilities’ participation in the American Heart Association’s annual Heart Walk last month. She walked in two of the three area AHA walks, completing the courses in Chicago and Northfield on September 20 and September 22, respectively; the third walk took place in Oak Brook. Nearly 800 ComEd employees raised more than $140,000 in the trio of benefits. “My father was thin and looked fabulous,” Nocera says. “He didn’t just run; he also did 50 push-ups and 50 sit-ups every morning. My father was the picture of health. What worries me now is that all of the thin, seemingly healthy people around us—and they’re everywhere—are unaware

30

Nikki Nocera

that they could be at risk for heart disease. “That’s another reason I do the AHA walks.” She walks often with her daughters and thinks about her father every step of the way. Mr. Nocera and Nikki would talk about everything on those lengthy walks in Ohio, from politics to music to theater productions to … life. Neither Carl nor his wife, Joann, attended college. They raised Nikki, Gina, and Frankie (named after Mr. Sinatra) in a mostly steel and metalworking city in Northeast Ohio. For 13 years the patriarch worked for a local railroad to supplement his police income. Only 56 percent of Chaney High School graduates, Nikki says, enrolled in college. “My parents made tremendous sacrifices for all three of us,” says Nocera, who “was a super serious student” at Ohio University in Athens before collecti n g another degree at Loyola Univers i t y Chicago School of Law in 1998. “All my parents wanted to do was to make sure their children would have better lives than theirs.” N i k k i Nocera’s life today, as a professional at Exelon Utilities? “I could not be more grateful than I am today,” says Nocera, who met her

future husband on a flight from Chicago to Pittsburgh. “The position I’m in today, a Youngstown girl working for a tremendous female leader like Anne at a Fortune 500 company, is something I’ll always appreciate. I owe so much to my wonderful parents and the way they raised and encouraged me.”

My father’s death was preventable, and that’s why I’m doing what I’m doing. I walk to honor him.

Nikki would write handwritten notes—yes, pen to paper, with feeling—to her father often, and he’d date each and place each in a box. “I once wrote him a note to tell him that he defeated me in a card game only because he had cheated,” Nocera, cracking a smile, says. Carl Nocera scribbled a date on that one, too, and let it rest in the box containing all of the others, including the dozens and dozens with the heartfelt “I love you” at the bottom. “My mother gave me that box after my father’s death,” Nikki says. “That meant so much to me, because I never got to say good-bye to him. A huge part of my life was taken away from me, suddenly. Too suddenly. But those letters have helped ease some of the pain. When I read them, it takes me back to those special days when I got to be with, and laugh with, an incredible man.” Nocera has one more anecdote to share. It happened on the day her superhero died. “Bystanders administered CPR on him, right there on the sidewalk in Las Vegas,” Nocera says. “When he got to a hospital, he didn’t have any ID. So when they filled out a report about a man who had suffered a heart attack, they wrote, ‘A man in his 50s died.’ His 50s—nearly 20 years younger than my father’s age. “He,” the daughter adds, “would have loved that.” For more information about the American Heart Association, visit heart.org.
