Last year, celebrated Lake Forest-based interior designer Frank Ponterio launched a collection for the legendary textile purveyor Clarence House—following in the footsteps of past successful product design collaborations with brands like Arteriors on furniture, lighting, and accessories; Lee Jofa on upholstery; and Charleston-based Avrett on handcrafted furniture and fixtures. These lines are now available to the trade in more than 100 countries. Growing up, Ponterio spent summers at his family’s farm in southern Italy, and it was during this time—along with the weeklong jaunts his family would take to locales like Rome, Venice, or Milan— that Ponterio developed an appreciation for artistry and craftsmanship. “I certainly didn’t know how this would shape my perspective at the time,” he says. “when designing the new collection for Clarence House I shared family photos, travel images, and other inspiration when presenting my initial ideas. Images like the underside of a timber and clay-tiled roof became a plaid; cobblestone streets became paisleys; and images of mushrooms growing on the farm all eventually became part of my designs.” Founded in 1994 when Ponterio was just 23 years old, his namesake firm is now full-service with expertise in everything from interior architecture and historic preservation to interior design and product design. The mission? To create unique environments that are a physical embodiment of the life his clients want to live. “I was young and making nothing working for other people so figured why not be broke working for myself,” says Ponterio. “I took a chance and opened a small office in Market Square. Fast forward 25 years, and we now have the office in Lake Forest, a 4,000-square-foot space in River North with 14 team members; we opened in Nashville last year, and we are opening later this year in Naples.” Ponterio is a longtime supporter of the Lake Forest Showhouse & Gardens, benefitting the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago, and in his first year designing for the project, he asked to work on the living room. “They basically said ‘no chance,’” laughs Ponterio. He was given a staircase. The next year, the attic,

where he created a rooftop terrace with a bar and music to draw attention. Then finally the next year, he was handed the living room. The space was published nationally and helped propel his career. What stands out about Ponterio’s work is the idea that he doesn’t play within just one aesthetic and easily transitions from projects like an upscale penthouse in Nashville to legacy estates, to boutique hotels, and now on to the interior of private jets, the most recent inspired by an Alfa Romeo GTV. “Aviation is so much fun,” says Ponterio. “The client happens to be a good friend of mine, so every once in a while, I’m lucky enough to be invited to pop on the plane and go somewhere great.” Personally, he, his wife, and daughter, and their beloved dogs live in a David Adler-designed home. It received an historic preservation award from the Lake Forest Preservation Foundation and exemplifies all that Ponterio’s work represents: classic heritage, thoughtful restoration, architectural integrity, incredible details, and an inviting atmosphere. Preservation is important because these buildings are beautiful and significant, a testament to craftsmanship. Remember, they didn’t have power tools back then. All was done by hand creating a completely bespoke home. Though, while historic preservation is important, good design is even more important.” To that end, Ponterio gives his time and expertise as a board member of the Design Leadership Network, a group of more than 300 professionals that seeks to promote growth and best practices in the high-end design world. Additionally, he’s on the board of directors of the Children’s Brittle Bone Foundation, cochairing the group’s largest fundraiser every year. “My parents were both immigrants and neither had higher education,” says Ponterio. When Chef Michael Lachowicz opened Restaurant Michael at 64 Green Bay Road in Winnetka 15 years ago, it was just what the North Shore needed. White tablecloth service. A sommelier. And that signature quality every fine restaurant had in that time—the ubiquitous French twist. “It was a restaurant from a different era,” says Lachowicz. “Fifteen years ago, anything fine dining and classic was French, at least in its origin. But there’s been a complete about face in the industry today. Now that America has grown up with its food scene and Chicago has become such a food epicenter, a lot of the fine dining that was on the North Shore 20 years ago is gone … but we're still here.” Not only did Lachowicz see the change that was coming in waves of younger, less formal, residents making the North Shore their home but also the lure of the city as an internationally recognized food destination. So, he did what any good restaurateur does. He adapted. He pivoted. And he forged a new culinary path with the trio of restaurants that are today part of the highly acclaimed George Trois Group in Winnetka. “In 2019, I had to make some serious decisions,” says Lachowicz of his move to sell off part of the business and open the more casual but still “foodforward” Aboyer—accompanied by the fine dining companions of George Trois and Silencieux. “Otherwise I would have fallen on the same sword. With that in mind, he has prepared a family-style Thanksgiving feast at his Aboyer restaurant. “It will be a delicious and comforting experience for any food lover, and the menu is the same wonderful collection of autumn dishes my family also

will enjoy this Thanksgiving.” The menu is available for dine-in or for curbside carryout. Indoor dine-in reservations at Aboyer are available on Thanksgiving Day from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The restaurant will stay open until your group has enjoyed the entire feast. If you prefer to carry out your meal, fully cooked and ready to eat, you can pick it up on Thanksgiving Day from noon until 3 p.m. Both carryout and dine-in options are

series of anniversary dinners and special menus. “I still have echoes of that era when people dressed up to go to dinner,” he says wistfully. “But Silencieux was designed to be Michael 2.0.” While that third installment in the George Trois trio remains closed during the pandemic because it would be too difficult to socially distance the tables, it will definitely return. Both Aboyer (with its heated Le Patio Aboyer) and George Trois are

back open three days a week (Friday through Sunday) and have been a welcome respite for diners seeking the luxury of pre-pandemic food and service—with required safety precautions, of course. “I regularly get 50 to 60 people on the patio and 30 people indoors, because we’re doing it properly,” says Lachowicz. “We’re succeeding through these

priced at $59.00 per person (plus gratuity and tax). The menu includes the signature favorites such as Restaurant Michael’s Signature Warm Gougeres, Warm Baguettes and Whipped Honey Butter, and Candied Squash Bisque with Toasted Brioche Croutons for all guest. Each guest will also have a choice of two of the following entrees: Brown Sugar Brined and Roasted Locally Farmed Turkey with Pan Gravy, Roasted Tenderloin of Beef, or Roasted Tenderloin of Berkshire Farms Pork. times because I installed air infiltration systems, because I was really adamant on social media about how we’re going to do this and if you don’t like it, you’re not coming in. If I have someone argue with me about a mask, I will not engage. If that makes you uncomfortable, we’ll pack your food to go.” And that’s another culinary trend that the chef says he never dreamed he’d embrace. “If you would have asked me 15 years ago if I’ll do carry out, I would have laughed in your face and walked away,” he says. “Right now, it’s one-third of my business.” Lachowicz was not only prepared to take on this once unthinkable task, but he says that within weeks of the state shutdown, he had a plan for how to make the George Trois experience available for takeout with gourmet meal kits. “By the 20th of March, we were ready,” he explains, adding that he is also considering a nine-course meal option for either pick-up or in-person delivery. “I could either have it prepared for them to carry out with explicit instructions on how to unfold the blanket themselves, or I could bring it to them or unfold the blanket … my presence would cost extra though.” With a series of special menus continuing through the summer and fall, the George Trois Group had more than enough test runs to perfect the carryout offerings just in time for the holiday season. Whether you choose to dine in (safely and socially distanced) or have an entire meal pre-

pared for takeout, Lachowicz is bracing for a busy season. “For Thanksgiving, I already have 70 reservations for carryout and 40 reservations for dining in. I foresee the same thing for Christmas,” he says,

My numbers are good with revenue and strongly supported by a strong clientele for 15 years. I think it also helps that I’m not frugal as much as I’m pragmatic. I’m really hard to kill. Put Gale Strenger Wayne’s DNA under a microscope and you’d see a double helix carrying genetic instructions for civic responsibility. Her late father, Don, was a longtime Lake County Board member and a former president of the county’s Forest Preserve District at the time of his death in 1992; her late mother, Mona, served Shields Township as a trustee for 16 years and filled Don’s Lake County Board position after his death. One of Strenger Wayne’s grandfathers was an assistant supervisor for Shields Township, and her late uncle, Marshall Strenger, was mayor of Lake Forest from 1987 to 1990. “I absolutely revered my parents,” says Strenger Wayne, a fifth generation resident of the Lake Forest and Lake Bluff area and a Lake Forest High School graduate. “They were kind, generous, dedicated—like so many Lake Forest residents then and now. “My mom and I,” adds the supervisor for Shields Township from 2009-2013, “were considered twins to many people.” Gale Strenger Wayne, no surprise, continues to reprise her family’s sturdy commitment to civic duty as vice chair of the Lake County Community Foundation (LCCF). Established in 2003 by a visionary group of county residents, the foundation’s mission is to improve the quality of life of the most vulnerable residents of Lake County by providing civic leadership, promoting collective philanthropy, and partnering with grant recipients. Its presence has been crucial, particularly in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Lake County Community’s Crisis Relief Fund—designed to respond to critical needs that will arise in Lake County as a result of the pandemic, and also to serve as a permanent countywide funding resource in times of future emergencies—raised more than $800,000 in only a few weeks. “The COVID-19 environment has challenged everybody,” says Strenger Wayne, who joined LCCF’s board in 2016. “It has brought about bold opportunities. It has put us in a position to be mobile and responsive. We’ve been able to pivot quite easily, all for the benefit of Lake County and many of its wonderful agencies. But I have to point to our four amazing staff members and laud them. They’re bright, talented, experienced. “I’m also in awe of their tremendous energy.” The Fab Four, on this side of the pond: Lake County Community Foundation Executive Director Maggie Morales; Manager of Donor Services and Operations Wendy Richter; Manager of Community Leadership & Investment Emily Weber; and Program &

Communications Associate Courtney Combs. Among LCCF’s grant recipients in 2020 is Reading Power, oneon-one literacy tutoring for children in

pre-kindergarten through second grade in North Chicago and Zion. The Northern Illinois Food Bank, the grief support nonprofit Willow House, and the Center For Enriched Living—an organization that sees every person with a developmental disability as an equal, valued, and contributing member of the community— have also received B a s i c Human Needs grants from the LCCF this year. “Our visibility in L ake County has increased in the last two years,” Strenger Wa y n e says, adding LCCF is in the process of becoming financially and operationally independent, with the blessing and support of the Chicago Community Trust. “A record number of applicants, more than 75, have come to us looking for help this year. We are focused on food and security. Think about the kids forced to learn from home during the pandemic, the kids who had been eligible to receive free meals at school. We want to be there for them and their families. “We are a central repository for collabor ation. We wo rk h a rd t o amplify our positive impact by coordinating various agencies and government departments.” As the elected supervisor of highly diverse Shields Township for part of the Great Recession (20072009), Strenger Wayne— who earned a nursing degree and minored in French at Illinois Wesleyan

University in Bloomington—embraced the tuition-free education she received during business hours.

“I learned about the world,” she says. “There’s great wealth in the township; there’s also great poverty in it. It’s one of the most diverse townships in Illinois. Our outreach was both public and private, and we delivered more services to more people with fewer tax dollars than ever.” Way down on Strenger Wayne’s list of priorities is to tour golf courses in fewer strokes than ever. She’s driven to succeed in local golf leagues, but not overly so. She’s also the chair of the City of Lake Forest’s Senior Resources Commission, a deacon at First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, a hospital volunteer, a stepmother of two, a stepgrandmother of three, and a co-owner of three dogs and a cat. “My plate is pretty full,” says Strenger Wayne, who married Robert Wayne in 1995 after meeting him in 1992. “What do I remember?” she says of the courtship. “I was dazzled.” The couple lives in the Lake Forest house that Strenger Wayne called home as a youth. “Growing up, the family dinner was a special time, especially each Sunday,” Strenger Wayne recalls. “First at my grandma’s house and then at my mother’s. Sunday night, at 6 p.m., always at 6 p.m., with my family and extended family. Values were shaped at the table, while we were sitting there and listening to others. We respected all. We exchanged ideas. “You know what I learned, probably more than anything else, at those dinners?
