Visitors to Whitehall in Lake Forest can be forgiven for assuming they've been cast as modern-day extras in a classic British period drama. The estate, commissioned in 1920 by Continental bank President Arthur Reynolds, holds an intriguing and historically significant pedigree. "This is not just another big home on a large lot in Lake Forest," says Diana Peterson, President and CEO of AW Properties Global, who is co-listing the property with Erica Goldman of Jameson Sotheby's International Realty. "This property is truly exceptional and one-of-a-kind." The estate was designed by Daniel Burnham, whose trademark was foundations built on steel beams. It was completed by noted architects Graham, Anderson, Probst & White, known at the time for championing the Beaux Arts style, which is reflected in structures throughout Chicago, such as the Wrigley Building, the Field Museum, and Union Station. The Whitehall name derives from the Whitehall Castle, which was built between 1578 and 1582 for Lord Richard Prynce, a lawyer, in Shrewsbury, England. Originally called Prynce's Mansion, it received its current moniker in the 1800s after many years of whitewash covered its bare red sandstone. The connection between the two properties— separated by centuries and an ocean—can be found in the interiors of the Lake Forest house. "The interiors were constructed with entire rooms, plaster ceilings, wood paneling, and millwork imported from the Whitehall Castle in Shrewsbury," says Peterson. "Marshall Field himself oversaw the safe passage of the Whitehall Castle's rooms in which kings, queens, and noblemen had been entertained." Guests at Whitehall in Shrewsbury included King Charles the First, who popped in for a stay in 1642, Oliver Cromwell (1645), King James the Second (1687), and Charles Darwin. It was a house of character—history literally being written between its walls. The Whitehall in Lake Forest was built with the same attention to detail as the original in Shrewsbury, and Peterson says constructing the same house today would be a challenge. "To build this home today would

be prohibitively expensive," she says. "Not only was it constructed using the imported English castle elements that make the interiors so unique, but the Ludowici clay tile roof, zinc gutters, and wrought iron metal work that adorn Whitehall's exterior are what evoke an aura of elegance as you approach this impressive, stately home." As with the house, Reynolds spared no expense with the gardens, which were designed in grand, English style by renowned landscape designer Ellen Biddle Shipman. Shipman, one of the first landscape architects to break into the male-dominated occupation, promptly made a name for herself designing gardens for estates and urban buildings throughout the east and Midwest, including Manhattan's Astor Court Building. The house itself, which was completed in 1925, features eight bedrooms, five full bathrooms and five half-baths, grand entertainment rooms, and intimate spaces, all totaling just over 11,000 square feet. The property, nearly six acres, also features garage spaces

for five cars. While the house has been impeccably maintained, it has retained its historic charm, with its hidden passages and leaded glass windows. Entering the home, one can see the grand foyer and its carved oak wainscoting, stone cased openings, and intricate millwork. The formal dining room, historic library, grand hall, and living room can all be viewed from the entrance, and the kitchen and butler's pantry are adjacent to the formal dining room and a morning room with secluded views of the grounds. Also on the first floor are ladies’ and gentlemen’s powder rooms, a mud room, and an office. The second floor consists of a private master bedroom wing with separate dressing room, three bedroom suites, four additional bedrooms, five full baths, a laundry room, and linen room. The third floor

features an expansive game room with an original English pub with built-in ice chest, brew station, and a half bath. Notably, Whitehall has had only three owners since it was built, a sign of its unique splendor. “Only a few very prominent and fortunate families have called Whitehall home. Portugal native Sonia Afonso calls the world home, having lived in locales like Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, and Tokyo before eventually landing in Lake Forest. But it was in 2018 when Afonso found a way to combine her love of travel and culture with her interest in fashion. The result? Afonso’s lifestyle label Hoshi ColGunung Tote Bag lective. Combining a passion for sustainability with an interest in cultural preservation, Hoshi aims to create timeless pieces for women who are looking to define their own style with sourcing from cultures around the world. Each product is developed with the idea of promoting local craftsmanship, and the launch collection includes handmade baskets from artisans in Portugal and Panama hats from Ecuador. Each is designed by Hoshi but made by local artisans. “My interest in cultural preservation comes from living abroad and from embracing and experiencing different cultures,” says Afonso. “In Norway, every time there’s a wedding or an important party, like the National Day, they always wear traditional costumes—the bunad. In Japan, women wear kimonos for tea ceremonies, festivals, and special occasions. With Hoshi, I want to keep those traditions alive.” Afonso says moving across the world—nearly every three years for her husband’s job—gave her the freedom to try something new. It was a place of pleasant scenery and natural beauty. But not everything natural is beautiful. You’re at a North Shore lagoon. Nearby, you see a flock of Canada geese grazing in the grass. Nice. But wait, one bird had an odd limp. You took a closer look. Aw, man, it had a tangle of fishing line wrapped around one leg. This guy was with others and looked calm. Just another day at the goose office. But that knotted wire had to hurt. The bird occasionally bent down to peck at it. This must have cut down on flock activities, swimming, flying,

foraging, mating. Still, the stalwart bird was carrying on. Odd. But here’s the oddest part: it’s not odd. If you Google “goose with fishing line on foot,” you discover it’s awfully common. The internet is full of articles about geese walking around with this problem caused by fishing line cut loose and carelessly discarded. These birds are a good example of living with what the universe sends your way. The universe, on the other hand, has some explaining to do. SEEING THE LIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER AND FORMER DARKROOM DWELLER JODY O’CONNOR HELPS OTHERS DEVELOP THEIR TALENT. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Jody O’Connor’s black-and-white photograph of the blinds in her Edgewater apartment features shadows and light. Some of the shadows blotching the white slats could pass for either gnarled tree branches or the talons of an enormous eagle. It’s one of 200 edited images in her “Interiors” series. “If you had told me, months ago, that I’d take that many photos in my place, I never would have believed you,” says O’Connor, a native of Wilmette and cofounder and owner of InLight Fine Art P h o t o g r a p h y, which provides a variety of photographic services for the North Shore and Chicago areas. “A lot of the pictures focus on light in this crazy COVID19 time. “Light is positive,” she adds. “Light represents hope to me. Maybe all of the photos I edited are about hope.” O’Connor, an alumna of Wo o d l a n d s Academy in Lake Forest, didn’t take her first photography class until her freshman year at Loyola University in Chicago. A professor named Peter Jones taught the course. O ’ C on n o r ended up majoring in political theory and minoring in photography. “My professor’s passion for photography rubbed off on me,” says O’Connor, the daughter of pianists and the sister of a pair of artists.

“I remember the first serious photo I took. It was of a flower, surrounded by greens, in Michigan, where one of my sisters and her husband lived. Only the flower was in focus. “I fell in love with the process of photography.”

But O’Connor—the mother of six grown children (ages 38 to 26), with her husband, Wilmette native and Loyola Academy graduate Matt O’Connor— isn’t all about apertures and shutter speeds and megapixels. She’s also curator of Evanston-based Gallery OTR (Over The Rainbow), which offers exhibit space for local artists and raises thousands of dollars for OTR’s Resident Services Program; curator of Catholic Charities’ After Supper Visions (ASV), a program that serves food to the homeless and the near homeless and distributes free cameras (disposable and digital) to the Tuesday diners; and chairperson of the board of Bandwith, which provides exceptional musical instruction to the youth of underserved Chicago communities. “Wonderful work, moving work, has been turned in by our After Supper Visions photographers,” says O’Connor, in her 19th year with ASV. “For one recent exhibition we asked them to show us their world. They did. One took a picture of their home—under a viaduct. Another, who’s nearly a quadriplegic, took a series of outstanding photographs, including one of train tracks, with light a prominent theme in it. Taking pictures gives them something to do, allows them to explore the city. It’s an escape for many of them.” ASV develops film, talent, and hope. The 2020 ASV Photo Exhibition scheduled for June 12 to 14 was postponed because of COVID-19. The dining room at the Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Chicago location, 721 North LaSalle Drive, would have been transformed into a photo exhibit again, with all proceeds benefitting the artists. The program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.

Statements from artists before previous exhibits appear on the ASV website. “I am so proud and humbled to be in this show,” states a man. “I have, for so long, been called a loser, a good-for-nothing person. Today I know I am none of those negative things. I can

truly say I feel a part of something good.” “I love to take pictures of colors and shapes,” says a woman, who had heard about the opportunity to attend ASV photography workshops on Tuesdays from a friend. “A picture to me is artwork … each tells you a story about something. As a child, I was in art classes, and I find art is a melody; it is also like a book, with a beginning and an ending.” As a Wildcat at Woodlands Academy, O’Connor created scoring chances and turnovers from a “rover” position in 6-on-6 girls basketball games. She also made something else at the Catholic school for young women on Westleigh Road in Lake Forest. “Dear friends,” O’Connor says. “One of my best friends today, Suzanne, was a boarding student at Woodlands.” O’Connor’s first job after her Loyola University days was criminal researcher for the American Bar Foundation, a post she held for three years. Busy years raising six children followed, but the abstract photographer found time, along with blessed stretches of peace, in her basement’s darkroom during those years. Darkrooms? Remember those? O’Connor’s mother died from cancer in 1996. During the journey, including radiation treatments, Jody took rolls and rolls of film of her mother. “It was a project where I didn’t look through the camera while taking the pictures,” O’Connor recalls. “I’d enter a room and then snap, snap, snap. All were black-and-white photos. They turned out pretty blurry.” But blurry was a fitting finish for each of the images, given the gravity of her mother’s battle. What’s clear today is Jody O’Connor’s healthy approach to life. Each day to her is a gift, a precious chance to interact with friends and listen to music with her husband. She rides her bike practically every day and swims often. “Even when it’s 40 degrees and rainy and miserable outside, I’m on my bike, getting my exercise,” O’Connor says. “I get plenty of sleep, and I rely on meditation and prayer. This pandemic … you can’t control it. You can’t worry about it.
