Next Saturday, October 5, North Shore United Methodist Church will host its annual rummage sale with the theme of “Go Green in Glencoe.” It’s said to be one of the largest yet with upscale merchandise donated from throughout the local community. “This is a wonderful way to gather our congregation to implement our mission of ‘love, serve, and renew!’” says Reverend Scott S. Himel. “The camaraderie of our members to ‘Go Green in Glencoe’ with their recycling, as they gather, sort, and sell for this fund-raiser truly embodies the values of our church.” Organizers invite the public to “find their light” by selecting at least one new or gently used item from a vast selection of luxury merchandise. Beloved longtime Lake Forest resident, mother, grandmother, and friend to many Nancy L. Hughes died on September 15 at Northwestern Memorial Lake Forest Hospital. The 68-year-old was the widow of the late screenplay writer, director, and film producer John Hughes, and devoted her recent years to honoring his memory through philanthropy. “Nancy Hughes was an enthusiastic and kind woman who deeply loved her family and community. She was a generous and dedicated philanthropist. Her contributions to Lake Forest—the hospital—Gorton Community Center, Deerpath Golf Course, and most recently, the Hughes Gateway at the beach—were foundational, leading to significant participation by many of her fellow residents, and improving the city in a permanent way,” said George Pandaleon, Mayor of the City of Lake Forest, when reached for comment. “Nancy exemplified the love of Lake Forest and its spirit of philanthropy that we all share. She will be greatly missed.” Born in Chicago on April 22, 1951, Nancy was a resident of Northbrook in her youth, where she met fellow Glenbrook North High School student John Wilden Hughes Jr., in 1967, according to an extended obituary the Hughes family released to The North Shore Weekend. Three years later, they were married—Nancy at 19, John at 20. After they both worked a series of odd jobs, John found success in Chicago advertising— eventually gaining employment as a creative director before transitioning into screenwriting, telling stories comprised of observations from the young couple’s lives and shared experiences on the North Shore. The affinity the couple shared for their community was known around the world as the towns of Northbrook, Glencoe, Winnetka, and Northfield were seen on the big screen through John’s lens. With such films as The Breakfast Club, Home Alone, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, John became a filmmaking icon and brought Nancy along with him. NEWS NANCY HUGHES Cont. from PG 1 She’s Having a Baby, for which the final credit reads “Inspiration: Nancy Hughes.” Though firmly set in the North Shore, the script was written in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, where the Hughes family lived from 1984 to 1988. The film’s emotional climax revolves around a harrowing but ultimately healthy birth at Evanston Hospital, as it was then known, the same building where both of Nancy’s sons, John III and James, were born. Set to Kate Bush’s hit song “This Woman’s Work,” a track personally commissioned by Hughes, the sequence exemplifies a moment where music tells a story that images alone can’t adequately express. It was fitting, considering Nancy’s life was steeped in music. She is also remembered as having a particularly sharp skill for making a house a home—whether a family farm in Harvard, Illinois; a desert getaway in Scottsdale, Arizona; or in several suburban homes along the North Shore of Chicago. And it is perhaps fitting that even in the building in which she passed, Northwestern Memorial Lake Forest Hospital, there was a pavilion dedicated in the couple’s name. Nancy had donated the 11,233-square-foot home on Westminster Avenue and surrounding two-acre property she had shared with John in Lake Forest as a charitable gift in the development of its new hospital building in 2014. “John loved the beauty of Lake Forest; I love Lake Forest,” she said in a press release released by Lake Forest Hospital at that time. “So when the opportunity to help advance the hospital presented itself, it was an easy decision to make.” But Lake Forest was just one of the couple’s chosen hometowns. Nancy and John lived all over the North Shore, and the country. The family’s move to Los Angeles in 1984 was predated by a short stint in Scottsdale, Arizona. The state was familiar to John and Nancy, who’d spent a portion of their late teens living on a shoestring budget in Tucson, before ultimately settling in Glencoe in the early 1970s. Following John’s death in 2009, Nancy returned to Scottsdale, in 2011, and quickly established a wintertime oasis for herself and a steady stream of visitors, most notably her niece, Lyra Waggoner, and husband Josh and daughters Vela and Carina. Nancy’s parents, Henry and Naomi Ludwig,
were a constant presence in her life and that of her younger sister, Janice, who passed away in Illinois in 2000—an event that shook the family and strengthened their resolve to remain even more connected moving forward. Henry and Naomi, who wed in Chicago in 1947, remained married for more than 65 years. John’s untimely death in 2009 prevented the couple from reaching their 40th anniversary, a particularly difficult circumstance for Nancy to cope with as she faced life in his absence, according to the family. For the subsequent decade, Nancy was deeply committed to the long-term health and care of her parents. She held vigil over Henry as he passed from complications from dementia at age 90 in 2013, and had welcomed Naomi into her Lake Forest home for the final months of her life, before dying in her sleep on September 5. The night after the services for Naomi, who was buried beside her husband and daughter at Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie, Nancy fell ill. For five days, she was treated in the intensive care unit at Northwestern Memorial Lake Forest Hospital, before succumbing to complications from a blood infection, surrounded by friends and loved ones. In her final years, Nancy was a dedicated philanthropist, especially in her beloved Lake Forest. “We had the privilege of getting to know Mrs. Hughes during her visits to Deer Path Inn. We will always remember her gracious presence, her kindness to the staff, and her disdain for the martini glass,” remembers Matt Barba, General Manager of the Deer Path Inn in Lake Forest. “Mrs. Hughes’ contributions to Lake Forest knew no bounds.” The same year she donated her property to the hospital, she gave a $2 million lead gift to Lake Forest’s Gorton Community Center as part of its renovation. Today, the John & Nancy Hughes Theater is a state-of-the-art facility that regularly hosts lectures and screenings, including Sibylle and Robert Redford’s 2018 production of “The Way of the Rain” as part of a benefit for Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods. On her first visit to Gorton since the improvements had been made, she expressed gratitude to the city and its people for the refuge it gave them. “Really and truly, for the amount of years we lived in Lake Forest and with John’s career in the movie industry, we always had our privacy in Lake Forest,” she said. “When I learned that Gorton was renovating the theater, I thought it was a good way to thank Lake Forest.”

Brenda Dick, former executive director at Gorton Community Center, says she will continue to recall “the quiet way Nancy tended to our town and the strategic choices she made to assure that family, fun, community, and health would be strong for generations to come.” Amy Wagliardo, current executive director Gorton Community Center, echoed that gratitude. “None of what we’re doing now would have been possible without her,” she says. “I cherish her kind words of encouragement and will miss seeing her pop in for a film screening. We will always remember her.” Other recent projects include the John & Nancy Hughes Clubhouse at the Deerpath Golf Course, which was made possible by Nancy’s December 2017 donation of $500,000. She called it a “Lake Forest treasure.” And then, on September 14, the day before she passed, Lake Forest residents gathered for the dedication of the Hughes Gateway at Forest Park Beach, rebuilt with Nancy’s assistance after flooding destroyed the previous entrance. The site is just blocks from the Westminster Avenue home she donated to the hospital where

Its missions encompass worship, service, the arts, education, and fellowship. It also participates in interfaith activities that serve to further world un-

she died—the home where her family had lived from 1988 to 2009, and where John wrote Home Alone. As stated in the family obituary, “In death, the couple is united once again.” Our parting memory comes in the words Nancy spoke at the opening of the John & Nancy Hughes Theater, standing beneath the signage bearing her family’s name. “Lake Forest is a great community to raise children and living here has been one of the happier times in our lives,” she said. “When we found our Lake Forest home, there was no question that we wanted to live here. This is where we lived the longest. There is no other place that compares to Lake Forest.” Nancy is survived by her son John III, daughterin-law Ruta, and grandchildren Katelyn, Wil, and Livia; son James, daughter-in-law Tracy, and grandson Henry. Services were held in Lake Forest on Saturday, September 21, and Nancy was laid to rest at Lake Forest Cemetery. Donations can be made in her name, Nancy L. Hughes, to Northwestern Memorial Lake Forest Hospital.

One of the best punters in the state used his hands to kick-start his team’s offense last weekend. Lake Forest High School senior Kai Kroeger— a 6-foot-3, 180-pounder who verbally committed to the University of South Carolina as a punter in the summer—caught a 69-yard touchdown pass from senior backup quarterback Michael Clarke in the first quarter of the Scouts’ homecoming football game on September 20. “Pretty memorable,” Kroeger recalls a couple of days after notching his first varsity TD and finishing with four receptions for a game-high 104 yards. Alas, it was one of the few bright spots under the lights in LF’s 39-7 loss to Lake Zurich High School, which improved to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the North Suburban Conference. LFHS slipped to 2-2, 1-1. “Woke up at 12:30 the next day,” says Kroeger, also the Scouts’ placekicker. “Coach [Chuck] Spagnoli cancelled our scheduled practice on Saturday morning. We need to forget what happened Friday night, stay positive, get ready for our next game, move on.” Kroeger’s left leg moves footballs. High. And far. He averaged 40.3 yards per punt as a junior last fall, with his career-best boot traveling 67 yards. That special moment came in a 24-7 defeat of host Lake Zurich HS. Kroeger’s first two punts last weekend were 45-yarders, and his final one, a 50-yarder, forced the Bears to start a possession on their 15-yard line in the third quarter. No wonder South Carolina’s football staff offered Kroeger a scholarship after Kroeger displayed his leg strength and sound technique at a Kohl’s Kicking Camp held at the Gamecocks’ Brice-Williams Stadium in late July. “Not all college programs value special-team players as much as they do other players,” says Kroeger, who executed his first varsity punt as a sophomore in a 2017 playoff game. “But I found out South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp clearly values kickers and punters. I also spoke with some of the team’s special-team players, and I liked what I heard from them.” Kroeger, like most kickers and punters, didn’t sign up for football at a young age with visions of field goals and punts dancing in his head. “Fifth grade, I started kicking the ball around, nothing serious,” Kroeger recalls. “Sixth grade, I started to like kicking.” But his first punt in organized football wouldn’t occur until the eighth grade, when he handled a long snap and swung his left leg at a descending pigskin in a Rec League heavyweight game. Kroeger doesn’t remember the exact distance of that punt. “I think it went between 40 and 50 yards,” Kroeger says. “My immediate thought after the punt was, ‘That’s a once-in-a-lifetime distance.’” These days it’s practically a ho-hum feat for

him. “What I’m finding out, after years of punting, is that your best punts don’t happen just because of leg strength,” Kroeger says. “I’ll go out there, swing at 70 percent, and it’s a way better punt than if I had gone out there and attempted to swing my hardest. The harder you swing, the more likely you’ll shank one. “Technique,” he adds, “matters in punting.”
Rest mattered, big-time, to Kroeger after last weekend’s game. He was shaken up by a hard hit while serving as a wide receiver in the second half. Junior Shelby Pruett and sophomore Leo Scheidler each punted once as a fill-in for Kroeger in the fourth quarter. Lake Zurich senior kicker/punter Jack Rigby went out of his way after the game to catch up to Kroeger near midfield and ask about his health.

The fraternity of kickers and punters is a close-knit one. “Jack’s a good guy; he contacted me on Twitter not too long ago and told me how psyched he was to play us,” says Kroeger, who attributes his wellspoken, highly approachable nature to his parents, Monica and Manfred, and Grandpa Steve, also of Lake Forest. “Jack and I are friends. We might get together on Sundays and kick it around. It’s always good to practice whenever you get the chance.” Kroeger, who plans to major in special education at South Carolina, did Spanish and math homework on the afternoon of September 21, before getting together with several friends at an outdoor pool. “We hung out, listened to all kinds of music,” says Kroeger, whose Scandinavian first name is pronounced like the Greek letter “Chi”. “Started with hip-hop and rap, then ended with country and some Bob Marley. It was a good time to chill. They then watched ATM, a 2012 thriller/horror flick that centers on three people trapped in an ATM booth by a psychopathic hooded figure. Kroeger adores horror movies, saying he welcomes that edge-of-your-seat sensation. He has seen “Zombieland” more than a few times. “Twenty-eight times,” Kroeger says. “But that’s not really a horror movie; it’s funny. There’s a nerdy character who follows a rule book. I love that movie.” Kroeger did more homework on September 22, this time tackling an English assignment, before heading to Christ Church in Lake Forest for a Senior High Youth Group gathering from 7-9 p.m. “A lot going on this weekend,” Kroeger says. NOTABLE: Lake Forest HS visits Warren Township HS (4-0, 2-0 in the NSC) in Gurnee September 27 at 7:30 p.m. The Blue Devils have outscored their opponents 132-12. … Kai Kroeger said his parents found out well after his birth that his first name is a popular one in Hawaii. Learned Lawyer NANCY PARIDY SET TO RAISE THE BAR AS LOYOLA ACADEMY BOARD CHAIR. “Marlene … was … awesome,” Paridy says. Awesome would sum up, succinctly, Paridy’s duties at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (SRAL), formerly known as the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. In addition to being its chief administrative officer and senior vice president, Paridy serves as general counsel responsible for all legal matters, oversees and directs the organ i z a t i o n’s human resources, and is responsible for the ethics program, corporate compliance, facilities, security, food service operations, insurance needs, and government and community affairs. Book? Check. Flashlight? Check. A young Nancy Paridy was ready for bed only when she had collected those two items after brushing her teeth. “That was me, the girl reading under the covers, so I wouldn’t get in trouble for staying up so late,” the forever-jovial and tireless Paridy recalls. “I loved to learn; I still do. When I was 6 or 7, I’d play ‘school’ all day, every day. I’d put chairs in my room for my students. I was the teacher, instructing five of my neighbors until they had to return home.” Paridy, no surprise, needed only three years to graduate from McCluer High School near St. Louis and the same number of years to earn a Bachelor of Arts at Western Illinois University in Macomb. The youngest lawyer to argue a case before the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit? Paridy, who, on September 17, became the first woman to serve as board chair at Loyola Academy in Wilmette, the largest Jesuit college preparatory school in the nation. All three of her children with husband Steve Naughton are Loyola Academy graduates. “I’m excited about what Loyola Academy’s president, Rev. Patrick McGrath, is doing as a leader in education—particularly his focus on the future and strategic thinking,” says the 59-year-old Paridy, an Evanston resident since 1989 and the chief administrative officer and senior vice president of Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago. “Our academics at Loyola Academy? Amazing. Guess what I just found out? We have 11 National Merit Scholars. Eleven! “But,” she adds, “Loyola Academy isn’t just about academics; it’s also about love of learning and service to others.” Paridy, a tennis player in high school, learned how to play golf when her oldest child, Matthew, took a liking to the sport at the age of 8. “I was thinking, ‘If I don’t play golf, I’d never get to hang out with Matthew,’” Paridy says. Paridy became a golfer. Guess who asked her to spend five days in Scotland playing golf courses in July? Matthew, now 25 and a law school student at American University in Washington, D.C. The son wanted to hang with mom in the birthplace of golf. Her youngest child, Ellen, doesn’t have to travel far to visit Matthew. Ellen is a freshman at Georgetown University. Paridy’s middle child, Peter, learned Chinese at Loyola Academy. Intrigued and eager to learn, Peter’s mother wanted to take Chinese classes. The girl who played ‘teacher’ at home became the real student at home, twice a week for three years, with Marlene Ren—a Loyola Academy faculty member—serving as the teacher of a litigator who would receive the Top Women Lawyers in Leadership Award from the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois in 2018.

But Loyola Academy isn’t just about academics; it’s also about love of learning and service to others.
Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s corporate entities? None other than Paridy. The size of her business card nearly matches that of a highway billboard. SRAL is the first-ever “translational” research hospital where clinicians, scientists, innovators, and technologists work together in the same space, applying research in real time to physical medicine and rehabilitation. “My office does not have a door,” Paridy says. “I like it that way. I like how open the environment is, how easy it is for me to interact with researchers and other valuable employees at all times.” Paridy has cleaned trays and patients’ rooms at SRAL. Not because she had to out of necessity. She completed the tasks because that’s what consummate, passionate leaders do. “Leadership,” Paridy insists, “is all about being sure the people around you are together and committed to a vision that had been established. I want people to get excited about a vision, and one of my absolute priorities for Loyola Academy is the expansion of our Fine Arts spaces and program. We believe firmly in the Fine Arts at Loyola Academy. “We’re still tremendously excited the new pool and piazza our capital campaign enabled us to build.” The easiest way to get Loyola University men’s basketball coach Porter Moser excited is the mere mention of Paridy’s to-die-for cassoulet. Ellen and Moser’s daughter, Jordan, (Loyola Academy, Class of ’19), are good friends, and one of Paridy’s favorite pastimes is cooking for houseguests. Paridy (“I’m a foodie,” she declares) was an editor and restaurant critic for McCluer High’s student newspaper. She also joined the yearbook staff and held Student Council positions while holding serve as a tennis player for the Comets. But none of the extracurricular activities thrilled Paridy more than the opportunity to tutor a student after school did. “I loved science classes in high school, and I loved helping a student who was struggling with science,” Paridy says. “You’d help a student understand; you’d see that student smile, blossom, and get excited about learning. I made people happy—a gift I’m grateful that I have. I learned what it meant to be a mentor in high school. When I got to college, my mentor was Sterling Kernek, a history professor. He pushed me, encouraged me. “And he never stopped doing that because he loved that I loved to learn.” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
