Women Build HABITAT FOR HUMANITY LAKE COUNTY INSTALLS A SOLAR PANEL INSTALLATION IN NEW HOME FOR SINGLE MOM. EDITED BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Tanya Duffie may as well be receiving keys to the city this weekend as a project led by Habitat for Humanity Lake County presents keys to her new, energy efficient home. The Waukegan single mother of four was selected to receive the house as part of Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build initiative. This is the first U.S. Women Build project in the organization’s 28-year history that will include the installation of solar panels that will produce clean renewable energy. Solar panels will be installed on September 21 at 10 Washington Terrace in Waukegan as part of the house dedication ceremony. The Sun Company, the U.S.’s first solely woman-owned national energy company, donated the solar panels, inverter, and installation equipment. The contribution showcases solar power as a more affordable energy solution for lower-income families hoping to reduce their utility bills, and it Continued on PG 10
POETRY IN MOTION RAGDALE’S HIGH SCHOOL ARTS WEEK IS JUST ONE EXAMPLE OF THE IMPORTANT PROGRAMMING IT OFFERS YEAR-ROUND. BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Six young poets gathered one recent summer week in a soft-lit sitting room at Ragdale, architect Howard Van Doren Shaw’s former Lake Forest estate, and now one of the country’s largest interdisciplinary artists’ communities. The women sit, lounge, stand and pace, eyeing the microphone that shines with silvery challenge at the front of room. Waiting her turn for voice check, Fildaus Umutoniwase leans in to whisper. “I like your dress,” Fildaus tells me, her head wrapped in a brilliant purple dhuku. “Your shoes too,” she smiles, confiding in even more hushed tones, “I’m nervous, but excited, too!” For the next two hours, the poets, plus another 33 youth, show and perform works they created during the week-long High School Arts Week (HSAW) intensive they’ve just completed. The celebration packs the grounds with friends and parents, Ragdale supporters, and the teachers who led the students through courses in visual arts, puppetry, prose, poetry and creative writing. After each performance, the crowd erupts with applause, cheers—even tears. “I’m proud of them,” says Quraysh Ali Lansana, who has taught the prose and poetry module at HSAW for the last eight years. “All of them, despite varying gender identifications, ethnicities, and faiths—deeply bonded over the course of the week. They tackled challenging subjects, both personal and worldly, with courage and compassion.” Regin Igloria, Ragdale In-Schools manager, agrees. “These students show so much resilience! Some were nervous about presenting or were unsure about their work—but everyone was so impressive. They pulled off a lot despite the awkwardness and pressure of performing and putting oneself out there in front of strangers. Their youthful energy reminds me why art is so important to support. They aren’t afraid of telling the truth. You have to love their ability to just trust their ideas.” Cultivating confidence and providing an accessible space for youthful artists of all backgrounds to bloom were key reasons Ragdale launched the HSAW program eleven years ago. Although well-known for the residencies and fellowships it offered to architects, artists, writers, musiContinued on PG 10

NEWS POETRY IN MOTION Cont. from PG 1 cians, and composers since its 1976 beginnings, eight years ago, Ragdale had only one such program for youth—A creative writing intensive taught by novelist/journalist and educator Margaret Hawkins. “It was a great program, but at the beginning we only had 10 students, from one or two local schools,” says executive director Jeff Meeuwsen, who came to Ragdale in 2012 with a background in youth arts programming. “We saw the potential to expand HSAW to include more art forms so that it would more closely reflect the mix of media represented in our adult residency programs. We also wanted to open this to a more diverse, wide-ranging group

of students.” This year, HSAW included more than 40 students from 32 high schools in Chicago and the suburbs. To participate, high school students fill out an application form and submit samples of their work. “The program is competitive,” says Meeuwsen, “but we work hard to accept as many promising students as possible, with a classroom limit of 10 to 12, for a total of 40 to 50 overall. Our hope is always to accept all “moti-
vated” students, regardless of previous formal training, knowing that that is not equally available in all schools and neighborhoods.” For their week at Ragdale, students choose one focus module from options including Visual Arts, Puppetry, Prose/Creative Writing, and Poetry/Creative Writing. The modules are intensive, with classes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. But to introduce additional disciplines and media to the students during their week, Ragdale invites visiting artists who offer optional presentations and workshops to the kids at lunch time or after classes. Teachers for each module share enthusiasm for the program—what it does for their students, and what it does for them. “It is always my goal to introduce new writing prompts and to craft challenges every summer,” says Lansana. “This practice excites and challenges me both as a teacher and a writer, and that excitement is infectious among my students. This year, I was humbled to have four students return for the intensive, two of whom are on their way to the University of Iowa’s Undergraduate Creative Writing Program.” Each teacher builds their module with care—to create a healthy working space that is conducive to creativity and to give students tools and material they can build on as they leave. Margaret Hawkins, Ragdale’s Prose/Creative Writing HSAW teacher, says her general goal is to guide young writers through a crash course in basic forms: from non-fiction and fiction, to poetry and playwriting. “All while teaching them how to access their imaginations and harness the confidence to keep writing,” says Hawkins. “My workshops are always generative, not critical.”
This year’s Ragdale’s High School Arts Week included more than 40 students from 32 high schools in Chicago and the suburbs. Here are some of those who participated, including Fildaus Umutoniwase (shown on bottom center). Also shown (far right) is Paulina Camacho, visual arts faculty, acknowledging her students. PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS
“Year after year, students tell me their writing improves by leaps and bounds over the single week they are at Ragdale. I think it’s the freedom from judgement and encouragement to delve into their true thought that does the magic,” Hawkins concludes. Participation in HSAW is free to participating students, through the generosity of donors. This year’s sponsors included The Butler Foundation, Dermody Properties, The Gorter Family Foundation, The Grainger Foundation, Heizer Foundation, John R. Halligan Charitable Fund, Lake County Community Foundation, Palmer foundation, and Ragdale’s INSIDE1260 giving society. Director of Habitat for Humanity Lake County. “Energy use is a large part of every homeowner’s monthly payment, and this will help them for years to come.” Women Build events provide opportunities for women to take proactive steps in serving their communities and learning new professional skills. A team featuring local volunteers and family members started construction on the home in May. Rethink Electric is heading up the solar installation with volunteers throughout their company as well as supplying the material, labor, and expertise to make this project successful. “This definitely has brought us closer together as a family,” says Duffie about the Women Build project. “By it being our own house, it’s even better. We’ve learned a lot by helping build our own home. This has taught us what partnership is about. It has been a great experience for us as a family to be able to do this.”
has already inspired the family receiving the home to consider careers in renewable energy and other traditionally male-dominated professions. “Electricity is a necessity. But energy costs in certain parts of the country make housing unaffordable, particularly for working-class and lower income families,” explained Joley Michaelson, CEO of The Sun Company. “At The Sun Company, we make housing more affordable by making electricity more affordable. Through innovative renewable energy products and services, like our LIFE program, we help make electricity accessible and affordable while paving the long road back to a healthy climate.” In addition to The Sun Company and Habitat for Humanity Lake County, other companies involved in the Women Build project include All Bright Solar, Elevate Energy, Go Green Wilmette, Carmaine Mean, Rethink Electric, and The Kindling Group. A MEDICAL GEM TWO-YEAR-OLD OPAL LANG OF HIGHLAND PARK RECEIVES NEW HEART AS RONALD MCDONALD CHARITIES PROVIDES UNBEATABLE SUPPORT FOR HER PARENTS. BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
On the joyous day Priscilla Lang gave birth to her son, Apollo, in Evanston Hospital in late April, she implored the medical personnel to discharge her—STAT. Or, at the least, immediately after she had stayed for the required minimal number of hours following childbirth. Lang, of Highland Park, had her other child on her mind. Daughter Opal, 2, had undergone heart transplant surgery at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago—three days before Apollo entered the world. “I explained it all to the doctors and the nurses at Evanston Hospital,” the 35-year-old Lang recalls. “I found out I had to stay there for 24 hours. I asked them, pleaded with them, to do everything they could to let me see my daughter again as soon as possible.” She was discharged after 24 hours and reunited with her brave, resilient Opal. Opal and Apollo are happy, healthy toddlers today. “I will always look back at those days as celebrations of life—Apollo being born and Opal getting a second chance at life,” Lang says. Love and undying support all around Lang and her husband, 37-year-old Tyler, and their families helped immensely before and during that emotional, momentous April 24 through 27 stretch. So did Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicago and Northwest Indiana (RMHC-CNI). Its mission: To create, find, and support programs that directly improve the health and wellbeing of children and their families. When a child is sick, the nonprofit declares, a family is sick. Ronald McDonald Houses exist so families can get better together. The Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children’s Hospital was Priscilla and Tyler’s primary home for five months. “How wonderfully we were treated there, along with the caring, hardworking people we met while getting the opportunities to decompress, restored
my faith in humanity,” says Lang, who met her future husband while both were distance runners at rival downstate high schools Roxana and Wood River. “After moving up here, to live in Chicago before moving to Highland Park two years ago, I felt I was a missing part of a tribe. With Opal’s medical issues since December, I couldn’t go home to Roxana because I needed and wanted to be here for my daughter. Then, with doctors and nurses and Ronald McDonald House volunteers coming together for us, suddenly I had a tribe again.” Lang, an acupuncturist and yoga instructor, and her father, David, were in the Langs’ living room in Highland Park last December when Opal—who had received a pacemaker after being diagnosed with bradycardia, or a slow heartbeat— started to make a strange noise. The 15-monthold girl turned blue. She groaned. She lost consciousness. “I told my dad, ‘Call 911!’” Lang says. “I gave Opal CPR. As I’m doing that and looking at her, I’m thinking, ‘OK, that’s a patient.’ I wasn’t freaking out.” Opal was airlifted to Lurie Children’s, where doctors determined she would need a heart transplant. While on life support a second time, she suffered a stroke. Opal and her second heart continue to undergo six hours of therapy each week at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Glenview. “About 90 percent of her skills are back,” Lang says. “The therapists say Opal is serious about her therapy. The way she’s grown since the transplant, how much energy she has, I’m amazed, and I’m grateful each time I realize someone else’s heart is in my child. “I see Opal flourishing in therapy, going for it.” Opal Lang is a major figure in a Ronald McDonald House of Chicago and Northwest Indiana ad campaign. Images of her can be seen on bus shelters and other structures in Chicago. “One of my husband’s friends took a picture of a Ronald McDonald House ad in the city and
texted it to him,” Lang says. “The message was, ‘We saw Opal today.’ We are beyond grateful for everything Ronald McDonald House did for us from start to finish. Those red Ronald McDonald House containers you see in McDonald’s restaurants, with donated money in them? I look at those totally differently now.” Among Lang’s favorite sounds today? The extended roar a menacing Opal makes after
someone asks her to imitate a lion. “Opal is so enthusiastic, and she can be such a ham at times, quite a character,” a beaming Lang says. “She’s social and intrigued about things all around her.” Months before the birth of her little brother, Opal Moon Lang would tap-tap her mother’s belly and coo, “Baby, baby.” “And 48 hours after Apollo was born,” Priscilla Lang says, “Opal snuggled up against him.” David and Priscilla Lang of Highland Park with their children, Opal and Apollo.
THE BREAKFAST CLUB WOMEN’S NETWORKING GROUP HOSTS ANNUAL FUNDRAISER IN HIGHLAND PARK. Members of The North Shore Breakfast Club, a women’s networking/resource group that meets in Highland Park, is hosting its annual “We Support Women” fundraising event next week to benefit Cycle Forward. Held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24 at Michael’s Red Hots in Highland Park, the event is sponsored by The North Shore Breakfast Club, Michael’s Red Hots, Done Deal Promotions, and Sweet Things Bake Shop. Founded by Highland Park High School senior Sophie Draluck, Cycle Forward provides menstrual hygiene products to girls and women in need. Draluck will be a guest speaker during the event, discussing how her organization supports
16
girls and young women locally and overseas who f a c e similar issues of not being able to afford sanitar y products. She will also share
Sophie Draluck
her experiences travelling to India and learning firsthand how much of an impact her organization can truly make, near and far. “I came up with the idea for Cycle Forward when I read an article about the link between school absenteeism among teenage girls and the lack of access to menstrual hygiene products in Uganda and other African countries,” she says. “I saw how a single problem was creating big ripple effects that deeply affected the lives of so many girls. Suddenly, this basic necessity for those who menstruate started to seem not basic at all, and I realized that people in our own country might face similar challenges and difficulties in obtaining menstrual hygiene products.”
| SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 21 | SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 22 2019
Attendees will also enjoy a private screening of the Oscar-winning documentary short film, Period. End of Sentence, which focuses on how a woman’s cycle can limit her education and her life. One hundred percent of all ticket sales will go directly to support the important work of Cycle Forward. Guests are welcome to bring donations of new sanitary products to aid Cycle Forward in serving the women and girls in our own community. Tickets are $20 per guest (which includes salads, fries, soft drinks, and desserts) and can be purchased through Eventbrite at tinyurl.com/y27lkhv3 or by visiting thenorthshorebreakfastclub.com. We sensed that when we were at her house.” Scott’s Law was named after Lt. Scott Gillen of the Chicago Fire Department. He was struck and killed by an intoxicated driver while responding to a traffic accident on December 23, 2000. “I heard there have been two more deaths related to Scott’s Law violations in Illinois, as well as something like 16 injuries, since Chris Lambert’s death,” Shachtman says. “I think of the pain our community felt and continues to feel, and then, to think, two other communities are going through that, too. The word has to get out there. More drivers have to know what Scott’s Law is. “Lives will be saved,” he adds.

Sam Shachtman was driving two of his Highland Park High School hockey teammates to a tournament in Darien when he saw nothing but the flashing lights of a police car in his rearview mirror. He was a junior center for the Giants at the time, negotiating I-294 in Northbrook during a snowstorm on January 12, 2019. It was around 6:30 p.m. “I was 16,” Shachtman recalls. “I thought, ‘I just got my license and I’m about to get pulled over.’” The police officer did not make Shachtman stop. A car accident had occurred nearby. The trio of athletes continued southbound to Darien. On the way home, some three hours later, the boys in Shachtman’s car noticed law enforcement and medical personnel were still at the scene of the accident. Something awful must have happened. It had. News would spread that Illinois State Trooper and Army veteran Christopher Lambert was driving home at the end of his shift when he stopped to assist victims of a car accident. While comforting the families involved, Lambert was fatally struck by a reckless driver, who had vio-

The word has to get “Our hockey team,” Hara adds, “was connected to Chris in a couple of ways. That made out there. Donations will be accepted at the door, with all proceeds going to the Lambert family. The hockey club has raised more than $9,500 via its GoFundMe page, through September 16. If you see someone sporting a Giants Hockey-blue wristband, it’s probably a Scott’s Law band, featuring the crucial reminders “move over” and “slow down.” “Just as important, if not more important than raising money, is our goal of raising awareness of Scott’s Law,” Highland Park senior forward Jack Elbaum says. “Parker and I visited Halley at her house in July. It’s one thing to read about a tragedy such as this in an obituary. It’s something entirely different when you hear, firsthand, what her family has been going through since the tragedy.” Elbaum and Hara had arranged the get-together to inform Deerfield native Halley Lambert, nee Martin, of their team’s plan for the fall fundraiser. It originally was going to be only a two-and-a-half-hour free skate for attendees, thanks to the generosity of the Park District of Highland Park. But it would grow into something bigger—much bigger—than that. A hockey parent called White. Elbaum called Schneider. Local businesses got involved. Building, building, building. “Skate for Scott’s Law” was turning into something special, something packed with slap-shot momentum behind the force of three considerate, resourceful young men and their rink mates. “Sitting down with Halley, getting to know her, helped motivate us to keep going, to keep

MISSING CHRIS: Christopher Lambert, seen here with his wife, Halley, and their daughter Delaney, was killed by a reckless driver while helping passengers involved in a car accident on I-294 in January. The driver of the car that struck Lambert—a Highland Park resident and Illinois State Trooper—had violated Scott’s Law, which requires drivers to slow down and move over as they approach a stopped emergency vehicle or any vehicle with flashing lights. Forming the Future TIM UBBEN OF GLENCOE’S WORK WITH POSSE FOUNDATION IS A “LABOR OF LOVE.” BY ALICE YORK ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
For those familiar with the Posse Foundation, Tim Ubben of Glencoe is a man who needs no introduction. It is through his enthusiastic leadership, tireless volunteerism, and a joint gift of $50 million that the foundation has been able to transform the landscape of American leadership through education. “It’s been a labor of love serving an organization with such a noble purpose,” explains Ubben, philanthropist and founder of Lincoln Capital Management. Founded in 1989, Posse’s mission is to create a promising future for America through training leaders from diverse backgrounds that reflect the country’s rich demographic mix. Since then, it has identified, recruited, and trained more than 9,200 students. “Our ultimate goal is to create a new kind of leadership network that better represents the voices of all Americans,” explains Posse president and founder, Deborah Bial. “Providing more people with a seat at the table enriches us all.” Posse partner colleges and universities provide scholarships for each group of students being sent to a given school—a Posse formed to “back each other up” as they enter a new setting. In its inaugural iteration, Posse sent five high schoolers from New York City (its founding location) to Vanderbilt University, its first partner school. It now has 10 chapters across t h e countr y and more than 50 participating institutions. Students are nominated by community organizations, principals, and teachers, giving way to a selection process that includes observation as the teens work through group problemsolving exercises, followed by a series of interviews. The second half of senior year, a Posse meets weekly, giving students time to bond, form a support a system, and to learn about the academic and social demands they’ll have to meet.

Every Posse has a faculty member to mentor them and guide them through their first two years on campus. Many Posse students end up running for school government, going on to make major contributions in the workforce—Posse has a reputation for graduating 90 percent of its participants. “These are people of character,” Ubben says. “Tim’s involvement has been absolutely critical to our growth as an organization,” Bial explains. This involvement refers not only to what she describes as his expert guidance over the years but the monumental $50 million gift he pledged along with son Jeff in honor of the organization’s 25th anniversary. This commitment more than doubled the size of Posse’s endowment, guaranteeing its future for years to come. “We believe financial stability is the most important thing for any nonprofit,” Ubben explains. He first came to Posse after retiring as chairman from Lincoln in 1999, deciding to dedicate his time and attention to the world of nonprofits. A trustee at DePauw, his alma mater, Ubben saw the Posse formula working at the university. It had accepted a Posse from New York City and he wanted to provide the same opportunity for students in the Midwest. In 2000 Ubben joined Posse’s national board of directors and spearheaded the opening of the Chicago chapter that same year, becoming founding board chair of Posse Chicago. Since then, the local chapter has sent over 1,600 students to 12 schools, all with full four-year scholarships. “The grand total value of scholarships is now at $1.4 billion to date,” he shares. “Chicago Scholars alone have won over $235 million in scholarships since opening.” Posse has received many significant acknowledgements over the years, most notably in 2010, when President Barack O b a m a honored Posse with a portion of his Nobel Peace Prize Grant. Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, a PossePlus Summit was held on June 7,

bringing together nearly 150 student delegates representing 54 top-tier colleges gathered at Deloitte University in Westlake, Texas. Bial described the summit as a “unique town hall event” reporting on the state of the nation through the eyes of college students—as always, providing the opportunity for growth and the success of generations to come. Produced in collaboration with the Aspen Institute, streamed by NBCU’s Telemundo, and moderated by Emmy Award-winning journalist Frank Sesno, the Summit offered a glimpse into the state of the nation as seen through the eyes of college students. The Summit, which was sponsored by Deloitte, spanned issues such as immigration, racism, inequality, education, climate change, and civil engagement. “Everyone deserves a seat at the table and a voice in the future,” Ubben concludes. “It is an honor to be a part of this important mission.” For more information, visit possefoundation.org.
