Don’t ever challenge Billy Corgan to the board game Scrabble. His business partner Chloe Mendel has, and her sit-down battles versus the lead singer of The Smashing Pumpkins have been lopsided. Corgan rocks in the word game. “He’s an amazing Scrabble player,” says Mendel, also a fashion designer of the faux fur brand Maison Atia. “Billy uses so many of his tiles, puts down big words; I usually manage to come up with threelettered words.

It launched its Phase 1 reopening on September 3, offering outdoor seating, takeout, and delivery. Look for the Phase 2 reopening to take place next spring, when Corgan and Mendel intend to provide interior dining and a live venue for music and comedy performances. There will be room inside the Art Deco-laden spot for a retail store that will house records, branded ZuZu’s merchandise, curated tea wares and home goods, hand-dipped incense,

Affordable, plant-based comfort food, delicious salads, healthy bowls with homemade pickled vegetables, and to-ache-for grilled cheese sandwiches on locally sourced sourdough bread, among other tasty options packed with clean ingredients. Then there’s a sea of tea choices, including French Kissed Moroccan Mint, Chamomile Rose, Vintage Hot Chocolate Aged Pu-Erh, Korean Blue Elektric Matcha, and Stimulus Hot. Chicago-based Rare Tea Cellar—founded by Highland Park native Rodrick Markus—serves as an invaluable Madame ZuZu’s partner; so does Metropolis Coffee Salad Nicoise

and chic Maison Atia faux fur pieces. Count on ZuZu’s to retain its whimsical ambience. “We had wanted to grow, to expand our space, for a while,” Mendel says. “We want to be a place where young people know that they can come here on, say, a Friday night, hang out, eat healthy food, play games like Scrabble, and listen to calming music, like jazz. We’ll never play loud Top 40 songs, and we’re far from a noisy-bar scene. Billy has been very involved. He has a great vision for what we want to be, aesthetically and what we offer on our menu. “People will find it to be a cultural hub that’s fun and relatively quiet,” she adds. Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering finds ZuZu’s indispensible to her mornings, already. She

was Customer No. 1 on September 3, ordering avocado toast with cherry tomatoes and pepita seeds. “She told us, on that first day, ‘You know, I’m going to come here for my breakfast every day,’ ” Mendel says. Now you know why ZuZu’s official menu features Nancy’s Avo Toast. Mendel grew up in New York City and had to adhere to a vegan, gluten-free diet at the tender age of 11. She baked up Category-5 storms in the kitchen, under the direction of her mother, Jenny. “I loved being in the kitchen,” recalls Mendel, responsible for all baked goods (mostly vegan and gluten-free) at Madame ZuZu’s. “Chocolate chip cookies … I probably baked those first as a child.” Mendel’s decadent tomato soup at ZuZu’s is creamy and out-of-this-world yummy, with a satinysmooth texture. It goes with a grilled cheese sand-

wich way better than peanut butter goes with jelly. Among ZuZu’s other must-inhale offerings are Grandma’s Meatball Sandwich, cashew yogurt parfait, three-grain porridge, chia pudding, and nicoise salad. ZuZu’s even makes its own mayonnaise. graphic trips annually to locales known for landscapes such as the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, and the Palouse in Washington State where Red Barn documents his consistent returns to capture the colorful array of rolling hills. For architecture, however, sweet home Chicago remains his favorite. “Sometimes you only have 30 seconds to set-up the shot and take a picture,” explains Dr. Landau, as was the case with the elegant staircase, caught sans its normal hustle and bustle of people, at the Rookery Building in Rotunda. Dr. Landau sources the same quality in technicians and treatments for his photographs as he does for his patients, using a Rhode Island printing resource that is renowned for representation in the Smithsonian and many other museums. “The process of composition, design and color matching in photography are aligned in the artistry that I apply to creating smiles,” says Dr. Landau, “the crossover, for me, never ceases to amaze.” "Rush University used to have an 'Artist of the Month' exhibition in one of the main hallways” recalls Dr. Lawrence Layfer, a recently retired Rheumatologist and Emeritus Professor at Rush Medical College. He remembers the excitement of his first sale from that venue, "I framed the

He participated in various group shows at the time and jokes when two paintings were once stolen off a wall, “I felt I had arrived as an artist!” Soon, work and family life got busier, the instructor moved away, and so did Dr. Layfer’s tools to storage. Fast forward to an iPhone and a read through Tony Bennett in the Studio: A Life of Art & Music with paintings from the singer's travels, and Dr. Layfer was motivated to follow a similar regimen of using his photos of people and places, and to sketching daily. “My drawing ability is for me the skill that matters most,” explains Dr. Layfer on what he views as the joints of his work, “it’s not unlike the way as a physician I had to gain shape of the person, separate from a patient sitting on an exam room table with an illness.” Sharing experiences without betraying confidentiality of identity, a necessity in his field, also translates to Dr. Layfer’s oeuvre. Afternoon in the Bookstore is from an image taken abroad where he was struck in the unusualness of a formally dressed woman, wide brim hat and all, casually sitting with a drink on the shop floor surrounded by book stacks. In Night Prayer, a new work from an old picture of his son at the Western Wall, posture and profile alone portray the deeper emotion associated with the scene in Israel. American painter Thomas Eakins' The Gross Clinic, depicting a teaching surgeon mid-operation, was completed for Philadelphia's 1876 Centennial Exhibition but ultimately rejected for its realism. Artist and subject, like doctor and patient, is a personal relationship. For three North Shore medical professionals, all collegial friends, their scientific practices have been greatly influenced and enhanced by their artistic pursuits. Dr. Mark Landau, a Cosmetic and Reconstructive Dentist, learned photography at a young age from his father, a clinical microbiologist, in their basement darkroom. “I had a gallery showing during college with photographs of my grandfather all taken along

NEWS Jerusalem. “I’ve found art to be a connector,” says Dr. Layfer, “it always seems to enable me to break down any barriers and reveal a bit about myself to others while inviting and encouraging the same in return." From the sunrises in Belize and Buddhist monks of Bhutan to birds in his North Shore backyard, Dr. Michael Lewis, an orthopedic surgeon with Illinois Bone and Joint Institute, has embarked on a photographic journey with his eye and his passport. A native of Texas, it was as a student at Brandeis University where his attention to art history was piqued and then further cultivated during his U.S. Air Force service in England. Days off found him with camera in farflung locales like Nepal, or searching for much of the fine art that comprises his collection today. “It was actually a portrait thought to be Queen Elizabeth I that is responsible for my marriage,” reveals Dr. Lewis, crediting his good fortune of finding the painting and meeting an equally interested patron in his wife, a teacher on the base, both the same day. Self-trained, Dr. Lewis has displayed his portfolio in galleries around the United States, on a website, and in three books, the latest entitled One World: A View of Seven Continents (with proceeds donated to the Zebra and Cattle Egret, Zambia

For Dr. Lewis, medicine and photography are about establishing mutual trust and sharing intimate moments. His photographs aim to find similar special engagements as in the adoring relationship between Grandmother and Grandchild in Cape Coast, Ghana, or the feeling of solitude within splendor in Titania Zaouria Mosque in Fez, Morocco.

shot, these doctors have found ways to incorporate parts of their surrounding nature into the nurture of their care provided. A late orthopedic surgeon from Rush University Medical Center, Dr. Jules Shapiro was a prolific sculptor detailing every element he knew of the hand into beautiful bronze and stone castings. That ability to abstract new forms from fundamentals is what essentially defines any respected diagnostician. And, the value of taking such an approach resonates as well in the lives and livelihoods of Dr. Landau, Dr. Layfer, and Dr. Lewis. In a large skillet over medium-high heat sear the chicken livers in chicken fat. Allow to brown well on all sides and cook the livers through.

Yom Kippur meals must be ordered by Wednesday, September 23 for curbside pickup on Sunday, September 27 (before sundown) for enjoying Monday, September 28.

Remove from the pan and add the onions. Season the onions with salt and pepper. Stir frequently, reduce the heat and cook them until they are well browned and “caramelized” (approximately 20 minutes). Then remove from the pan and allow to cool. Put the livers and onions in a food processor. Chop them up until they begin to smooth out. Add the eggs and process anther minute. Season to taste. Slice the baguette and drizzle some chicken fat on it and sauté them sliced in a pan over low heat. Spread the liver mixture on the bread and enjoy.

A two-story building on the North Shore that was home to a large bookstore is now home to a large medical center. Few people remember this building was a bookstore. Many young people are not even aware there were big bookstores. Things change with the times, and the world spins on. But the sea gulls who made that bookstore parking lot their hangout haven’t changed. They’re still perched proudly atop light posts there on most days. One bird per post. Even if you’re not a nature nut you wonder: why? They’re called “sea” gulls. But they’re not near water. Not even near dumpster diving that gulls famously like. Why are they in that parking lot?

Large Herring Gulls in crisp white plumage like naval officers. Our lakeshore is a few miles away. Yet the birds stay. You’ll never know the reasons they have. They rest atop those light posts in the parking lot of a medical building, just as they did when it was a bookstore’s parking lot. In our changing world, the bookstore may have disappeared. A local program contacts Mothers Trust Foundation, the Lake Forest-based nonprofit that provides immediate assistance during times of crisis to low-income families in Lake County, with a request. Parents of a three-month-old child had asked for a session with a photographer for a family portrait. The parents also needed help in paying for the printing and framing of the picture. Immediate? Perhaps you’re asking: What’s so immediate about a photograph taken by a professional clicker and placed inside a protective and decorative edging? This: The infant is terminally ill. Mom and Dad want something special, something to cherish. Forever. A pediatric hospice program gets the ball rolling—a photographer donates a photo session; Mothers Trust Foundation (MTF) commits to fund the printing and framing; the family poses. Click. The ball stops. A portrait hangs. “Heart-wrenching,” says Mothers Trust Foundation Executive Director Paula Turelli. “Some of our service stories are tear-jerkers, and others address needs related to education, housing, utility bills, and school fees, among others. Each week we provide grants (capped at $500 each) to families to fill the gaps when other funding isn’t available to help. We collaborate with our service partners—social workers, school counselors, and other professionals—and they identify children of families hoping to break the cycle of poverty. “We do not field requests directly from children or families.” But MTF has been a hit for 22 years, making a difference … one child at a time. Former Chicago youth guidance maven Barbara Monsor founded the organization at the age of 75 in 1998. She’d connect people in calamitous situations with generous people eager to delete the situations. Long-lost hope reappeared yearly in lives across Lake County, thanks to Monsor’s selfless orchestration. MTF has assisted more than 40,000 children and their families with more than $3.4 million in grants since its inception. MTF staffers still seek Monsor’s advice and often ask, “What would Barbara do?” or, “What would Barbara think?” “So many families don’t have the resources for anything extra for their children,” says Turelli, a Lake Forest resident and mother of four madabout-sports sons (Luke, 25, Mark, 23, Paul, 21, and Peter, 19). “Mothers Trust Foundation provides funds for families to cover things like fees for summer camps and school field trips. Those might be considered little things to many, but they’re a big deal to others. We helped a girl, a Waukegan High School graduate, by giving her a computer and book money for college. She graduated from Wittenberg (Ohio) University in May with a degree in chemistry. Guess what she’s doing now? She’s a chemist for Procter & Gamble. “Helping children reach their potential is what we do.”

A sampling of other moving MTF service stories:

Mike, when the women attended Northwestern University in the 1980s. Paula, a Medill School of Journalism student, was doing laundry on campus one day and needed to borrow 25 cents. Lenny had a quarter. A courtship followed. They’ll celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary on September 22, no doubt near their Golden Retriever, Roy Hobbs. The family’s late Golden Retriever was named Babe Ruth. Think the Turellis like baseball? Paula grew up in Davenport, Iowa, more than a few homers’ combined distance from the Iowa Hawkeyes’ varsity baseball diamond in Iowa City. She swam and played basketball for Central High School Blue Devils squads and did not type one word for the school’s newspaper. “I’m probably the only Medill student who never wrote for a high school paper,” Turelli says. Fall quarter, during her junior year at NU, Paula packed a reporter’s notebook or two and headed to Muskegon, Michigan, where she submitted City Hall reports and crafted features for a local newspaper. Lunchtime with students in an elementary school cafeteria served as the setting for one of her features. Following her NU days in Evanston, Turelli got named art director at the magazine Outside, her “dream job.” She later became an ace in communications for her church and began her tenure at MTF more than four years ago, as its director of development and marketing. Turelli took the executive director reins last December. “We normally don’t have any direct contact with the people we help,” Turelli says. “But I happened to be at a Toys for Tots event in Waukegan, and a woman there saw ‘Mothers Trust Foundation’ on my apron. She immediately started to cry.” The thankful weeper had received a stroller and a car seat from MTF.

• Boy keeps getting in trouble for using his cell phone too often in class. Adults later find out it’s because the boy takes pictures of the blackboard with it. He has trouble seeing the blackboard’s contents from his seat. MTF buys eyeglasses for the boy. • Female AP student at ZionBenton Township High School discovers she won’t be able to receive her diploma or her official transcripts because her mother hadn’t paid a single school fee in four years. Eighteen-year-old hoping to attend college looks to her left and to her right and straight ahead and sees nothing but stop signs. The young woman’s cousin pays $500 of the $1,003.70 bill; MTF partners with Benton Township to pay the balance. Stop signs vanish. • COVID-19 puts father of three daughters out of work. Family drains entirety of savings, jeopardizing its ability to pay utility bills. Father receives loan from his brother. A daughter breaks her eyeglasses, and all three outgrow their clothes. MTF pays the family’s Com Ed and North Shore Gas bills and provides funding for eyeglasses, as well as a voucher to the Salvation Army for outfits. “Some parents want to give their kids the world but don’t have the means to do so,” says Turelli, whose best friend and Tri Delta sister, Lake Forest resident Karla Patlovich, serves as MTF’s service manager. “My kids were lucky, fortunate to have had the basics and other needs met. Moms everywhere … we just want what’s best for our kids, want to see them succeed. The requests we’re seeing at MTF concern me because there are too many of them, and the kids now, in the middle of the pandemic, their anxiety and depression must be at an all-time high. I’m grateful there’s an organization like Mothers Trust Foundation in our county, because it provides hope and builds confidence for those who need it now.” Paula met her future husband, former University of Iowa pitcher/ outfielder Lenny Turelli, through Karla and Karla’s boyfriend (now husband),
