Lake Forest has always been a city of philanthropic-minded citizens, those who give of their time, talent, and resources to make life better for those in need. And it was one such resident and her husband who led a grassroots effort to boost music programs within the nearby Waukegan School District 60 nearly a decade ago. Pat Sikorovsky and her late husband, Eugene, founded what became known as Bravo Waukegan in 2010 with a goal to support music education in the schools, bringing a variety of resources to Waukegan’s music students and their teachers. Headquartered at the Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest, the nonprofit has flourished and expanded over the years to bring in even more local allies—all working together for a common goal. “We are fortunate to have such strong community partners that support our mission,” says Karey Walker, Bravo Waukegan’s executive director. On October 2, Bravo Waukegan leaders are hoping to expand that reach just a little bit further with a public “friend-raising” event at Gorton Center’s John & Nancy Hughes Theater. Titled “Jazz & Jokes,” the goal of the benefit is to share Bravo’s mission to attendees and provide an entertaining evening of music and laughs. “There are many volunteers and supporters here Continued on PG 10

Three-time Grammy nominee Justin Roberts & the Not Ready for Naptime Players will present an interactive, one-day-only “Be Your Own Band”

The 60-minute concert next weekend will include an ample serving of Roberts’s fun, interactive, and highly sophisticated songs—performed with his five-piece band accompanying him on bass, drums, electric guitar, trumpet, melodica, keyboard, acoustic guitar, ukulele, harmonica, and more. However,
what’s new and different about the “Be Your Own Band” concert is that kids get a chance to make their own music and showcase Roberts’ own compositions. We had the opportunity to talk to Roberts last year. Here’s what he had to say:
I’d like to begin by congratulating you on the Grammy nomination you received for “Lemonade.” Being your third Grammy nomination, can you please say what it means to you to receive this kind of attention from The Recording Academy? It was incredible to receive the news that “Lemonade” had been nominated for best children’s album. I’ve been making recordings for kids and families for 20 years, and it’s really amazing to know that all of the work that goes into making this music is celebrated.
The Chicago area is rife with artists associated with the family music scene, including you, Ralph’s World, Laura Doherty, Little Miss Ann, Wee Hairy Beasties, among others. Why do you think this is the case for the region? Chicago is incredible, but I think this is also happening all over the country. I made my first kids recording in 1997 which was the same time that Laurie Berkner was making her music in New York City. Around the time I put out my second album “Yellow Bus,” Dan Zanes and Ralph Covert were putting out records, and shortly after that, They Might Be Giants, the Verve Pipe, and Barenaked Ladies made recordings for kids and families. Now there are large pockets of performers for kids in NYC, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, and many other places. I have a theory that the new wave of family music has something to do with parents wanting to derive as much enjoyment from the music as their children do. Am I on the right track? I think that sounds about right. I started writing songs for kids when I worked at a preschool in the early ’90s. I was (and am) a bit of a music snob and so I started playing Sam Cooke and traditional Irish songs for the kids and saw how they responded to that music. When I introduced my own songs to them, I tried to write things that I appreciated as an adult but
concert on Saturday, September 21, at Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire. An “all-star” of the family music scene, the Evanston resident has been creating the soundtrack to families’ lives for more than 20 years. His devoted fan base enjoys classics like the fist-pumping “Pop Fly” and parent favorite “StayAt-Home Dad.” Bandmates Liam Davis and David Winer also live in Evanston but the group is known around the nation for their intelligent and whimsi-

also resonated with kids. I’m still working in that direction.
There are songs on the album about animal and aquatic life—“Me and My Kangaroo” and “EightLegged Octopus.” Is there an unwritten rule about including these kinds of songs on family music recordings? The very first song I ever played for kids was called “Giraffe/Nightingale” and it was written for adults originally. It was a bunch of verses with no chorus and no repetition. Kind of the opposite of what people thought kids’ music should be. The kids at my school memorized every word and sang it at the open house. I think it was partly the attraction to the animals that made it work. Since then I’ve written songs about hippos, polar bears, rhinos, and just about every animal imaginable. However, all those songs are always about something else. “Giraffe” is about recognizing the good in yourself, “Imaginary Rhino” is about the creative process, and “Octopus” is about having to let go of something you love but can’t hold on to. In addition to the above-mentioned Evanstonian Liam Davis and Evanston resident David Winer being members of your band, you are also joined on “Lemonade” by Evanston resident Nora O’Connor. As someone who has a presence in Evanston, can you please say something about the music community? Evanston is full of so many wonderful musicians and music venues. My producer and longtime band mate Liam Davis (of the band Frisbie) grew up there and currently resides there. My trumpet player David Winer lives in Evanston and writes music for commercials. Nora O’Connor (The Flat Five,
Decemberists, Neko Case, Iron and Wine), Freda Love Smith (Blake Babies, Sunshine Boys, Mysteries of Life), and Jason Narducy (Split Single, Bob Mould, Superchunk) all live there too. It’s crazy the amount of musical talent that is hiding out in Evanston. The “Be Your Own Band” concert will be held at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, at Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire. Tickets are $20. David Lindquist looks to his left at football practice. Looks to his right. Highland Park High School’s second-year varsity football coach sees HPHS alumni. Everywhere. There’s Jimmy Knotek, the Giants’ defensive coordinator. There’s Anthony Kopp, the Giants’ offensive coordinator. There’s HPHS assistant coach Owen Kugler, a former all-state offensive lineman at HPHS. “Plus we have several Highland Park graduates coaching our freshmen and sophomores,” says Lindquist, himself a former HPHS standout football player. “Our football staff members have a lot of pride in Highland Park High School. “They believe in giving back,” the former University of Illinois defensive lineman adds. Knotek provided his knowledge of HPHS football history after HPHS thumped visiting Wheeling High School 69-13 in a season opener August 30. “Jimmy told me only one other team in program history had scored more than 69 points in a game,” Lindquist says. “I believed him; we all did. He’s ‘Mr. Highland Park’.” Zion Griffin was a helmet-wearing Mr. Incredible against Wheeling’s Wildcats. The junior running back—mostly a varsity defensive back for the Giants last fall—returned two kickoffs for touchdowns and rushed for two more from the line of scrimmage. Griffin finished with 197 yards on only five carries. Or a 39.4 yards-per-tote average. “Ridiculous,” says HPHS senior defensive tackle Billy Gimbel, a quad captain with junior quarterback David Crane, senior lineman Sam Fishman, and senior wide receiver Gerald Washington. “Zion,” Lindquist says, “is shifty, fast, elusive.” Crane, a 6-foot, 165-pound signal caller, connected with Washington for a 30-yard TD and ran for a 10-yard TD against the Mid-Suburban League East team, a year after HPHS needed overtime to edge host Libertyville 28-27 in a thrilling season opener. “Our offensive linemen, all of them, were amazing against Wheeling,” Crane says. “Each did his job. Each made it easy for our running backs and for me.” The Giants ran into a tough opponent in Week 2, falling 28-0 to host Lakes High School on September 6. Lakes’ Eagles (1-1) tallied all four TDs in the second quarter. But the Giants generated plenty of positives in Lake Villa, in addition to blanking Lakes in three quarters. Fishman—who plays on both sides of the line—and senior inside linebacker Drew Deer finished with eight tackles apiece; junior linebacker/running back Gio Volpen-

“Our head coach keeps his messages short and sweet,” Crane says. “He keeps us focused, too. Coach Lindquist has expectations, pretty high ones. The Music Man GERRY FIELD OF HIGHLAND PARK REFLECTS ON A LIFELONG LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE VIOLIN. yes, but a too-neat, everything-in-the-drawers workshop area is for new ventures—and for those about to go out of business. “I enjoy my work; it’s satisfying,” Field says, adding he has fixed instruments for Ravinia Festival performers before their shows. “There’s an art to fitting pieces of wood together. And there’s nothing like using a tool that allows you to carve wood like it’s butter. What’s important to me is making a musical instrument, or repairing one, that will make it feel comfortable, especially for a young student. “You don’t want a beginner to get discouraged.” Field was 6 when a man walked into his firstgrade classroom and asked, “Who wants to play a musical instrument?” Field heard “musical” and raised his hand immediately. All he had to do after that was get an adult to sign a form that would allow

Late at night, when he attended Lane Tech High School in Chicago, Gerry Field would occasionally pick up his violin and slip out of his house. He wanted to practice without disturbing his family and neighbors. Field entered the venue, gripped his violin and bow, closed his eyes, and played, played, played. His audience? Rows of idle washers and dryers, as well as empty detergent containers and scattered coins. “A 24-hour Laundromat—that was my secret place to practice violin patterns, sometimes for hours,” the 70-year-old Field recalls. “I don’t think young musicians would want to do that these days. I’m not even sure Laundromats stay open 24 hours in Chicago anymore. I loved going there back in the 1960s, because nobody was ever around. “And I don’t even think my parents knew I was gone.” Field’s business—Field Violin Workshop, established in 1979, in a Rogers Park apartment — hasn’t strayed from its current location in the Ravinia District since 1991. A violin maker and Highland Parker who lives only four blocks from the shop, Field also repairs and restores violins, violas and, cellos, and teaches violin to five students in the workshop. The youngest in the quintet is 10, the oldest 76. “Music is more than my passion,” says Field, who met his future wife, Jutta, when both were students at Chicago-based Kenneth Warren & Son School of Violin Making in the 1970s. “It’s a major part of me, a part of what makes me tick. Music gives me calmness. I’ve always believed that it’s important to express yourself, and I enjoy doing that through the universal language of music.” Enter the front of Field Violin Workshop on Roger Williams Avenue, and you’d swear it doubles as an expansive, cozy den after business hours. The workshop area in the back is home to workbenches, all kinds of tools, and hanks of horsehair for bows. It’s a busy, busy room, cluttered back there,

him to rent a violin. “I tricked my grandmother into signing it,” says a grinning Field, sitting near a large desk and a black piano in his workshop’s warm entrance area. Lane Tech was an allboys school when Field attended it from 1963-67. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra ran the school’s music program then, and music enthusiasts like Field took three periods of orchestra each day every semester, including a music theory class. But that meant Field had to load up on math and science and history classes in the summers in order to graduate on time. “The only honors class I ever took in high school was physics, in summer school,” says Field, a freelance violinist/fiddler who performs occasionally as a member of The Sulli-

van Brothers. “I didn’t mind that, though, because I got so much out of those music classes. It was almost like getting a college education in music before college.” Field then enrolled at the University of Illinois-Chicago for a couple of years before heading to Europe with a couple of friends to “major” in Performing for Patrons at Cafés. (Or something like that.) Field also joined musical groups abroad, including the trio Morning Column. The group entertained at a festival in Belgium. The festival’s master of ceremonies was none other than Frank Zappa. Field watched the televised 1969 moon landing in a Paris café and befriended high-wire artist Philippe Petit after watching him negotiate a unicycle—while juggling pins, among other items—on a wire between trees near another café. In 1971 Petit high-wire walked between the towers of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and accomplished the same feat three years later between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. He had not received permission to attempt either of the daring walks. “What a lovable character,” Field says of Petit, 70, and a New York City resident. “He reminds me of Harpo Marx.” Field returned stateside in 1973 and, two years later, was one of the first students to enroll in the Kenneth Warren & Son School of Violin Making, which is now known as the Chicago School of Violin Making in Skokie. He was in his final year at the school when he met a first-year student named Jutta. Their first date was a walk in Chicago. Their second date? Same as the first. They got married in 1980. “She is very ethical, a beautiful woman,” Field says. “My wife gave me a violin in 1979. “I still use it today.” Field Violin Workshop is located at 451 Roger Williams Avenue in Highland Park.
