LIFE LESSONS CRISTO REY ST. MARTIN COLLEGE PREP USES A UNIQUE WORK/STUDY MODEL THAT PREPARES STUDENTS BOTH FOR COLLEGE AND FOR LIFE. Cristo Rey St. Martin High School held a delayed graduation ceremony for 2020 graduates on July 24, 2020.

Anajancy, a member of the class of 2021 at Cristo Rey St. Martin High School (Cristo Rey) in Waukegan, has big dreams. She's accomplished plenty already, including being among the first in her family to go to high school. But she's poised to do more. It is Cristo Rey's unique approach to a college prep education, combining work experience with study, that is preparing Anajancy for a bright future. For nearly four years, Anajancy has worked for the Lake County Public Works Department, analyzing data and tracking tests to make sure water is clean. "Every week we go to work one day of the week, and it seems like we're missing school, but the teachers are very supportive," says Anajancy, whose last name was withheld per school policy. "We go to corporate jobs and learn about the real world, how to interact with people and have communications skills." While Anajancy says at times the work/life balance can be difficult, especially for a high schooler, the tradeoff is worth it—especially when she is learning skills that will benefit her both in college and in real life. The first Cristo Rey school in the U.S.—Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Pilsen—was founded 25 years ago to provide a quality college preparatory education for children of low-income families in communities that lacked educational opportunities. The schools, based on the work/study model, now dot the country, from Washington state to Los Angeles to Massachusetts.

Through quality work opportunities, students are able to offset about 60 percent of the costs of a private education and learn valuable

says Preston Kendall, president of the school. "The other side of it is just the experience that our students get. When you're coming out of a community of poverty it's very isolating. The work/study program gives them incredible access to different companies and businesses and they're meeting people they wouldn't otherwise meet." It's hard to argue with the success of the Cristo Rey model, especially in Waukegan. Over the years, the school has built an impressive track record of both college placement and more importantly, college graduations. Cristo Rey accounts for just seven percent of the total student population of the Waukegan area, but 50 percent of the bachelor's degrees earned by area high school students. As importantly, per capita household income of Cristo Rey families is less than a third of other families. Retention is key. According to the school's records, 92 percent of the students who enrolled as freshman in 2018 are due to graduate in the 2021 class. For the first time in the school's history in 2020, 100 percent of the graduating class of was accepted to a four-year college. Universities to which students have been accepted include Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Brown, Loyola, and Benedictine. Seventy percent of Cristo Rey's graduating class of 2015 completed their bachelor's degrees. "Statistically, a college degree far outpaces a high school diploma or associates degree as far as lifetime earnings," says Kendall. Like many private schools, Cristo Rey has been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The

school faces big challenges in trying to provide education to low-income students during this time. "Just because of the crowded living situations many of our students are in they don't necessarily have their own room or a quiet place to go where they can study," Kendall says. "We're lucky enough that a few years ago we went to what we call one-to-one learning and each student was issued a Chromebook so all of our

CORPORATE CHAMPS THE HIGHLAND PARK COMMUNITY FOUNDATION LAUNCHES A NEW PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM WITH LOCAL CORPORATIONS TO PROVIDE EVEN MORE RESOURCES TO THE HIGHLAND PARK AND HIGHWOOD COMMUNITY. BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Since it was formed in 1992, the Highland Park Community Foundation has provided more than $2.2 million in grants to nonprofits in the region. Now it wants to do even more. The foundation recently launched its Corporate Champion Program to provide opportunities for businesses to become philanthropic partners during a period of unprecedented need in Highwood and Highland Park. Chicago-based Mesirow Financial, which has a significant presence in Highland Park, is the first Corporate Champion to sign on, making a fiveyear, $100,000 commitment to the foundation. “For more than 80 years, Mesirow’s commitment to our clients and our communities has included investment in the places where we live and work," says the company's Executive Chairman and longtime Highland Park resident Richard Price. "We are pleased to be partnering with the Highland Park Community Foundation in a long-term investment to support and enrich the lives of those in and around Highland Park and Highwood.” The Corporate Champion Program is an outgrowth out of the desire of the foundation's board to up its commitment to nonprofits serving Highwood and Highland Park. In 2016, the board launched a strategic planning process and hired its first Executive Director, Terri Olian. "The two main goals of bringing me on were really to raise awareness of the foundation and to raise funds," Olian says. The foundation's focus areas include education, human services, senior services, services for people with disabilities, and the creative and cultural arts. The Corporate Champion Program will boost the

foundation's ability to do even more. "We're able to address the needs of the youngest in our community to the oldest in our community," says Olian. "We support organizations that provide services for senior residents and we provide grants to organizations that tend to the needs of preschoolers and very young children as well." While the program was not a direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the timing is right as so many individuals and families are suffering during this difficult time. The key advantage for individual and corporate donors to the foundation is that the foundation knows the community, knows where the needs are, and knows which nonprofits and charities are doing quality work. That knowledge is why Mesirow Financial signed on as the first Corporate Champion. "We are driven not only by where our employees and clients live and work but also by the passion of our employees, clients, and business associates," says Ellie Forman, Vice President of Community Engagement for Mesirow Financial. "We have had a long relationship with the Highland Park Community Foundation, and I think there's a misconception about the level of need in the communities of Highland Park and Highwood." The company focuses its funding on neighborhoods, including family service and education; on social justice, including tolerance and anti-gun violence; and, on opportunity and inclusion for persons with disabilities. Among its grantees in the North Shore region are the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center and Ravinia. The company also supports larger, Chicago-based nonprofits that operated programs in Highland Park and Highwood. The newly established relationship with the

You’re taking a break from the world of long stories, but not the world of short musings. You’re on a North Shore nature path and you wonder why you think of it as “Dead Duck Trail.” It’s your own name for this spot. Ah, yeah: years ago, you saw the remains of a duck under a tree there. With a self-satisfied hawk in the branches, stifling a burp. We probably all have our quirky names for places. Once you saw a guy lying in the grass alongside Ridge Road. You slowed to ask if he was OK. “Just sleepin,” he said with a smile. Now you think of that quiet stretch of Ridge as “Sleeping Man Road.”

There’s a plaza in town where you’ve enjoyed afternoons on a bench eating an ice cream cone. You think of that spot as “Ice Cream Square.” When discussing this craziness, friends say they do it, too. We’re not in the official business of naming places around the North Shore. But that doesn’t stop us from remembering them in our own way. And isn’t that the same thing? RECIPE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY WENDY FRANZEN 6 SERVINGS INGREDIENTS: • One 4-pound boneless pork shoulder or one 4-1/2-pound bone-in pork shoulder • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 2 tablespoons canola oil • 1 large yellow onion, chopped • 4 cloves garlic, minced • 1 bunch fresh thyme • 2 cups low-sodium chicken stock

• 1/2 cup pure maple syrup • One 3-pound butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cut into 1-1/2-inch chunks • 3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh sage leaves, plus whole sprigs for garnish • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice

Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Pat pork dry with paper towels and season with 2-1/2 teaspoons salt and 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper. In a large dutch oven, heat canola oil over medium-high heat. Add pork shoulder and brown on all sides, about 8-10 minutes total. Transfer to a large plate. Reduce heat to medium. Add onion and thyme sprigs to dutch oven and cook until onions are translucent, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook one minute more. Return pork to dutch oven fat side up, pour in chicken stock, and bring to a boil.

Cover and place in oven for two hours. Turn pork over, recover and cook for 2 hours more. Raise heat to 400 degrees. Brush pork with 1/4 cup of the maple syrup and return to oven uncovered for 15 minutes. Remove pork from dutch oven and place on a platter. Brush with remaining syrup and tent with foil to keep warm. Place butternut squash on a large sheet pan, sprinkle with chopped sage, 1-1/2 teaspoons kosher salt and 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. Drizzle with olive oil and toss to coat. Place in 400

degree oven and roast for 30-35 minutes until tender and lightly golden, stirring once or twice during roasting time. While squash is roasting, place a sieve over a saucepan and pour pan juices through to remove solids. Skim fat from top with a spoon, discarding fat. Bring juices to a boil, then simmer until reduced by half. Stir in lemon juice. Test for seasoning, adding more salt and pepper if needed. Slice pork and serve with butternut squash and pan juices. HAPPY CAMPER BANNER DAY CAMP OWNER STACY SCHWARTZ KOTELOV WAS THRILLED THAT HER TEAM WAS ABLE TO HOST 2020 SUMMER SESSION IN THE TIME OF CORONAVIRUS. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

The 8-year-old boy reached the top of the Banner Day Camp climbing wall and rang the wall’s bell a few summers ago. His reaction, 24 feet above a crowd of elated, raucous, teardrop-soaked onlookers in Lake Forest? A delightful combination of excitement, pride, relief, and relentless joy. Some had to look away. The boy’s smile was that bright. “He had never made it to the top, until that day, and his parents were there to see it,” Stacy Schwartz Kotelov, Banner Day Camp’s owner and co-executive director, says of the triumphant moment. “He was so nervous. A counselor encouraged him, assured him that he could do it as long as he put his mind to it. As he climbed, the crowd cheered. His parents cried. Others cried. You should have heard the cheers as he neared the top of the wall. They got louder and louder. “That’s what Banner Day Camp is all about,” Kotelov adds. In this year of COVID-19, chances of staging Banner Day Camp—founded in 1965, by Kotelov’s parents, Allen and Helen Schwartz—this summer were looking more and more unlikely. That was the prevailing dread for most of the spring. But the enduringly positive Kotelov and her tireless, resourceful Leadership Team found a way to responsibly welcome campers of all ages from June 29 to August 7. “It seemed impossible, for quite a while,” says Kotelov, a Wilmette native and a Highland Park resident since 1991. “Parents kept calling us, wondering if we’d open after hearing a lot of overnight camps had been canceled. People were begging us to open. We made the decision to go for it in early June and then had much to do in a short period of time. Our maintenance people did amazing work, getting our grounds ready. It got to the point where preparing for the campers was like walking across a tightrope daily. “But it turned out to be a truly spectacular camp, with zero cases of COVID-19 transmission,” she adds. “Our pods were 50 people: 40 campers, 10 staff members. Essentially every aspect of the camp had to be modified because of the pandemic. Kids got to play outdoors and feel normal again—interact, laugh, take safe risks, grow, and enjoy everything else about the Banner Day Camp experience.” That Banner experience is a wide-ranging one at its 55-acre site. There’s the fun, of course, a camper’s Must Have. Also, in no particular order: opportunities to compete in sports; swim in pools; conquer adventures (climbing walls, zip lines and go-kart courses, to name a few); create art and perform art; and develop sportsmanship, teamwork, kindness, resiliency, and compassion all in a loving, secure atmosphere. Allen Schwartz was 24 when he turned his Saturday Camp into his family’s Banner Day Camp years ago 55 years ago. “My dad is creative and idea-driven, with a ton of energy and perseverance, and my mom

is smart, with excellent business sense,” says Kotelov, who gripped the reins of the premier North Shore summer camp in 2013, when her parents retired. “They formed a great team and had a wonderful vision. You’re not going to find a person who has more stick-to-itiveness than my dad has. He grew up in camps and told me some of his best experiences in life happened at camps. Those memories inspired him to create camp experiences for children to help them develop strong self-esteem and confidence in a nurturing environment.”

Among Stacy’s early Banner Day Camp duties as a youngster was answering camp phone calls at home. Mom and Dad added responsibilities to her plate each year, to the point where she needed a flying-saucer-sized dish. She became a serial Banner Day Camp camper, followed by years as a camp counselor and any you-name-it camp title—even while attending Poway High School in San

Diego for four years. “I’d always head back home in the summer to help out at the camp,” says Kotelov, who earned a degree in child development and family relations at the University of Arizona, where she met her future husband, Paul, who’d serve as a Banner Day Camp staple for 20 years. “It’s a magical place, our camp, with absolutely magnificent facilities in a Northwoods-like setting. It’s empowering. It made a huge, positive impact on me in my youth. My confidence and self-esteem, my connections to adults, to children, to the world … all of that got stronger because of Banner Day Camp.” Quick to laud her indispensible Leadership Team colleagues—including co-executive director Howard Thall, program director Niki Papak, and junior camp director Melanie Mann—Kotelov owns a leadership style ideally suited for a summer escape that captivates 3-year-olds and 9th graders and every camper in between. Kotelov is open, loving, inspiring. If you’re looking for someone who is part easygoing, part energetic, stop searching after interacting with Kotelov for a few minutes. “I can be a little silly, too,” says the mother of Ari (25 years old), Eli (22), and Noah (19). “A facilitator working with us one year asked, ‘If you had to come up with the title of your autobiography, what would it be?’ Mine would be ‘Surprisingly Responsible.’ ” Kotelov tells the Starfish Story to campers at the beginning of camp each summer. Perhaps you know the story. Tens of thousands of starfish are stuck in sand, beached and helpless after a violent storm. Boy throws one ailing starfish after another into the ocean, rescuing scores of them. Man notices boy’s tosses and claims, “There are too many starfish on this beach. I’m afraid you won’t really be able to make much of a difference.” Boy picks up another starfish and hurls it toward the watery haven. Smiling boy replies, “It made a difference to that one.” The story’s sweet moral: A simple gesture can make all the difference in the world. Which brings us back to our li’l Sir Edmund Hillary and his ascent to that climbing wall’s bell at Banner Day Camp. Maybe the 8-year-old without the aid of a Sherpa heard, “You can do it!” from a counselor or a camper or his parents. Something as simple as that.
