Put your books away and your party hats on and get ready to celebrate Lake Bluff Library’s 100th birthday. The library is teaming up with Lake Bluff Brewing Company for their Summer Block Party on Saturday, August 24 from 5 to 10 p.m.to celebrate 100 years serving the community. The festivities will include food and drinks from the Lake Bluff Brewing Company, Maevery Public House, and Donati’s Pizza. Griffith, Grant & Lackie will sponsor hot dogs from The Left Bank. The event promises fun for the whole family,with balloon artist Holly Nagel twisting up impressive balloon creations from 5 to 7 p.m. and live music by Wichita Jacks from 6:30 to 7 p.m. and 9:30 to 10 p.m. There will also be raffle prizes and special birthday treats. While you enjoy the final glorious weeks of summer in Lake Bluff with friends and family, take a moment to appreciate the library’s mission of providing a haven for learning,studying,and communicating in a shared,respectful space dedicated to the enrichment of the community. The Design Professionals Showcase features a self-guided tour of Highwood Design District businesses, tailored for industry professionals. Guests will have the opportunity to interact with owners and experts representing the diverse range of design-related enterprises in Highwood. There will also be demonstrations and presentations at stops on the tour—some of which qualify for continuing education units (CEUs). Highwood Design Week wraps up Saturday, September 7, with a Public Expo, free and open to the public, with check-in at the VIP Vendor Tent.

FIRST LOVE
WINNETKA TEEN BEN SENIOR’S NEW INDIE FILM PREMIERED THIS WEEK IN WILMETTE. BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Boy meets girl, falls in love, and spends the next year trying to hang on through the ups, downs, twists, and turns of that first, wild ride. Ultimately? Boy learns as much about who he really is, as he does about love, through the experience. It’s the classic high school romance story. And it’s the subject of recent New Trier Township High School graduate Ben Senior’s new feature film, The Fall. After winning Best Student Film honors at The Illinois International Film Festival for his short film, The Routine, in May, 2017, Senior completed several more films before making this one, which he hopes will also do well in the indie film-fest circuit. Impressed with Richard Linklater’s film Boyhood, which follows the protagonist through 12 years of life, Senior shaped The Fall to follow Mike, and his love-interest Edie, through a full year of high school. “As the relationship changes, so do the seasons, and you see that in the film,” says Senior, who will study filmmaking at Syracuse University next month. “The Fall is based on my own personal experiences, which seems to be the best place to draw from in writing a script. Films that are more personal to me and my experience in life are much more fulfilling to make because they are connected to who I am as a person.”
Senior wrote an early, surreal, and dream-like version of The Fall when he was a sophomore. “But I thought making something so real appear dreamlike would cheapen the story,” he says. “So, I spent the summer after my junior year completely rewriting the script, auditioning actors for the film, and creating the shot lists and schedules.” Coming together for the first time in September at New Trier, many of the cast and crew didn’t know each other. “Shooting over the course of 10 months, we’ve kind of become a family,” says casting director Claire Cohen. “We have all grown pretty close.” Apart from the drama written into the script, “we’ve all had real-life challenges that happened during the making of the film,” adds Cohen. “We all supported each other through those.” Senior says that most of the cast in the film were sophomores during the making of the movie, figuring out where they fit in the world, which is exactly what the main character Mike—by Robert Petrie, is trying to do in real-life. “So that interaction of real world with film world, seemed to heighten the hyper-reality of the film,” he adds. The Fall made its private-showing premier at the Wilmette Theater earlier this week. The goal is to have The Fall shown in more theaters later this year, followed by an Amazon video release, and entry to as many independent film festivals as possible. Filmmaking is a path Senior started down early. As a fourth grader at Hubbard Woods School in

Winnetka, Ben made a movie featuring a home-made stuffed-animal cat that he interviewed. By the end of 8th grade, he’d found his way to film classes at the Infinity Arts Academy at DePaul College Prep High School in Chicago, taught by Kevin Lucero Less, who would become Senior’s mentor. In the years leading up to The Fall, Senior made many feature films with Infinity Arts Academy, in-
cluding a satirical comedy about American consumerism called The Town That Wore Brainwashing Granny Hats. After his first solo film The Routine, he shot another horror movie called Pawn, about a young mother and daughter who plays chess with an invisible figure. Pawn was accepted into the Illinois International Film Festival in 2018. That prompted Senior to make a documentary film about the experience of being in the festival. Making the documentary changed Senior’s perspective. “I met so many really interesting filmmakers. One woman in her early 80s had just gotten in to filmmaking. Another young guy just out of college did a film about his ancestral lands. They all had really interesting stories, personal stories. Through making that documentary, I really connected to how I felt as a filmmaker, and realized that I wanted to step away from making horror films based on imagined realities, to making films that were more personal to me and my experience in life. That’s what brought The Fall.” As he heads off to college, Senior says he hopes to return to small, concentrated films, while still keeping them personal and real. “I’m looking forward to pushing myself to do things that are new and interesting, and making films in a way that nobody else can,” he says. You may know (and recognize) actress, writer, and singer/songwriter Jessica Harper from movies such as My Favorite Year, Stardust Memories, Pennies From Heaven, and the Rocky Horror Picture Show sequel Shock Treatment—as well as both the 1977 original and the 2018 remake of Suspiria. What you may not know is that she grew up in Winnetka, which she describes as “a Chicago suburb that was popular with many White Anglo-Saxon Protestants who were also descendants of hot shot pilgrims.” With her enlightening and entertaining podcast Winnetka: A Memoir (winnetkapodcast.com) Harper does a marvelous job of telling the story of her family, which consisted of Jessica and her five siblings (including two sets of twins), her ad executive father, and her delightful and diligent mother. We had the pleasure of speaking with Harper about the podcast and her career shortly after the podcast launched. I’d like to begin by asking you to say something about why now was the right time for you to create the Winnetka podcast? I think it was the time of life that inspired me to do it now. Both of my parents passed in the past five years. I became reflective about them and my family as a result. I felt really moved to write a story about us. a podcast about?”They said, “Do a podcast about your family.” It seemed to be a coming together of events— both my interest in writing about my family and somebody suggesting that I do so. I started playing with it to see what I could come up with. I discovered a few threads in my family story that I thought would make for an interesting one. How important was it for you to have sibling cooperation in the process? Very important. I didn’t want to be the only one telling the story. I wanted their perspective on the events. Particularly to make the point that in any family siblings will have different memories of the
Your affection for Winnetka comes through immediately. Do you think it’s still possible for a place to make that kind of impression on a young person? Absolutely. It almost doesn’t matter what the place is. I think it’s about the circumstances of the person, the child, presumably, and what takes place in that setting. Which either makes it a compelling memory or not so compelling. I think the potential is there. Think about people who move back home after college and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. I’m talking about towns that other people might go, “Really? Why?” You have been writing and recording children’s music for more than 20 years. Do you think that making children’s music was a way to reinvent and make peace with your own childhood for yourself? It was really more of a way for me to connect with my children in a kind of musical and spiritual way. But I think one connects to one’s children in a way that connects one to one’s own childhood. I also wrote children’s books. It was at a time when I had two

young daughters. It was my way of continuing to do creative work, which I love to do, and also to bring them into it—to include them—and tap into their incredible and childlike energy. Some of your songs play during the podcast, including the song, “Soda and a Souvenir,” which I first heard when it was recorded by Bette Midler for her No Frills album. What did it mean to you have Miss M record your song? Oh my God, it was fantastic! I was thrilled! Plus, I made a little money. She also recorded another song of mine (“One More Round”) on another album (Some People’s Lives) that did extremely well. I was very grateful for that. You appeared in both the 1977 original and 2018 remake of Suspiria. What does it mean to you have acted in a film that achieved cult status? I love it! I think it’s fantastic! All I knew 42 years ago was that I was going to Italy to make a horror movie with this very interesting director (Dario Argento) who, at the time, was the Alfred Hitchcock of Italy. Much to my surprise, cut to 40 years later and thanks to social media and the gorgeous movie that he made, it’s become this incredible cult favorite. I feel really lucky to have been on that train. Are there any upcoming projects that you’d like to mention? Yes. I’m working on a TV series, which is called See, starring Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard. Apple is developing a streaming service which I believe is debuting in the fall and this (series) is apparently one of the first roll-outs. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

RedHawks’ lone golf recruit is motivated to shoot scores in the red at Miami University in Ohio. BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
On the car ride home from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio last summer, Lake Forest High School golfer Danny Fisher stared out the window from the back seat for most of the 310-mile trip with his parents, Chris and Lesley. He was as loquacious as a mime. “I didn’t say a word,” Fisher recalls more than a year later. “Too disappointed.” Miami men’s golf coach Zac Zedrick had informed Fisher of the partial scholarship—the RedHawks’ only Class of 2019 scholarship available— he offered to an Australian prospect.
Pursue perfection— that’s what golfers do, endlessly.
The Aussie hadn’t accepted it, hadn’t turned it down. That left Fisher in a state of limbo. And not just while he and his parents motored across the ample state of Indiana. “Miami was my dream school, and one of my other dreams was to play Division I golf at Miami,” Fisher adds. But Fisher refused to sulk and didn’t let the tough news chip away at his strong golf game last summer. The 5-foot-10, 140-pounder reached the semifinal round of the highly competitive Chick Evans Junior Amateur at Itasca Country Club shortly after returning from Oxford, Ohio. He also continued to hone his skills against top-notch peers and collegians at Merit Club in Libertyville and work closely with both swing coach Chris Oehlerking and mindfulness conditioning coach Dr. Arthur Hoffman at The Golf Practice, a teaching academy in Highland Park. Late last August, shortly before the start of Fisher’s second season of LFHS varsity golf, Zedrick called Fisher. A spot on the men’s golf team at Miami was available because that guy from “down under” had decided to shoot for under-par rounds at Arkansas State University. “It’s your spot if you want it,” Zedrick told Fisher. “Mind if I have 48 hours to think about it?” Fisher asked Zedrick, who played scholarship golf at Michigan State University. The coach Okayed the request. Fisher didn’t need 48 hours. “I called him the next day and accepted the offer,” Fisher, sporting a sand-trap wide smile, recounts. “I can’t wait to get there and get started. Red bricks are everywhere; it’s a gorgeous campus, a pretty

Or, in the words of Oehlerking, “his Plan B.” “We talk about having that for your swing in case you need it during a round,” says Oehlerking, Fisher’s swing coach for five years and a co-owner at The Golf Practice. “We also talk about the progression of competing, of developing skills. I like how Danny’s mind works, in addition to his discipline and athleticism. He’s a quiet kid with confidence. He uses mindfulness techniques to deal effectively with adversity. “It’s critical for competitive golfers to be able to calm themselves and stay in the present moment,” he adds. Fisher’s path to competitive golf began with a lesson on the driving range at Briarwood Country Club in Deerfield. He was 8, as well as a soccer player, a baseball player, and a basketball player. His first golf instructor was his grandfather, the late Stuart Gimbel. “My grandfather was an avid golfer,” Fisher says. “I wasn’t sure about golf; I didn’t get into it right away. Good Influencer A HIGHLAND PARK HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT CREATES SOCIAL MEDIA CONNECTIONS FOR SPORTS FANS. BY MONICA KASS ROGERS ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
A few minutes into our Sunday meeting, rising Highland Park High School (HPHS) junior Zander Bush and we’re already intrigued. His story is unusual, quirky, and inspiring. First we flash back to when Bush was in third grade. His family had taken him to the Bradley Center to see the Houston Rockets play the Milwaukee Bucks—a random and rather ordinary event that somehow became a game changer. Seems Bucks forward John Henson was there signing autographs. And the experience of seeing the game and meeting Henson not only wowed Zander and made him a Bucks fan, but has put him on the path to becoming a skilled sports writer and social media influencer. The 16-year-old now operates two Instagram accounts (@bucksball and @giantsbball,) and his own website sportstag.org. He also provides the content for @anklebreaker, a basketball page with 70,000 followers. “The Bucks and Rockets game was my first time attending a basketball game in person,” recalls Bush, dark-haired and slight, meeting us for the interview in a Milwaukee Bucks hoody. “I’d already been watching basketball, although I didn’t have a specific team that I was following, and I didn’t yet know all of the players. When they announced that Henson would be signing autographs, I was really excited because he had had a great rookie year. And it was really cool to stand in front of him. He’s six-feeteleven inches tall, and sitting down, he was taller than I was standing.” Once back at home, Bush’s interest in the Bucks and professional basketball only grew. He bought and played NBA video games, watched ESPN, and over time, cued in to news from the Bleacher Report, beat writers, and fan pages. The idea to launch @bucksball, an Instagram account for Milwaukee Bucks fans, was born on the school bus. “I’d been thinking about it for a while,” says Bush. “Most of the national coverage on basketball focused on bigger market teams—overlooking teams like the Bucks, which at the time were smaller market even though they had a lot of promise. “ Also, of the existing basketball coverage, most was on Twitter— which to Bush seemed a more adult-focused outlet. “I thought Instagram seemed more targeted for a younger audience,” he says. And so, sitting on that bus, Bush launched @bucksball. For his first posts, Zander says he didn’t know how to edit or caption or even what to do to engage an audience. But he quickly learned. “I got the photos from Twitter or Google, editing

them myself on Photoshop. And I started keeping notifications on all the time for the best basketball information sources,” he says. Along the way, Bush learned the ins and outs of social media—including the best times to post to ensure the biggest audience and best engagement. He also learned that by asking questions in his posts, more people would respond to them with comments. This past year, Zander began thinking about analytics, trying different looks and content for his posts. He even started asking followers what they liked and didn’t like. That all built a loyal following, but once the NBA playoffs started, Bush’s numbers really jumped. “This past season, the Bucks finished with the best record in the NBA. As a result, the number of people following @bucksball jumped f r o m 6,000 to
15,400,” he says. “And even though they lost the Eastern Conference Championship to the Toronto Raptors, followers didn’t drop off.” Beyond the visual and metric skills required to cultivate a following, Bush’s interest in sports writing also deepened. As he got to know others with fan pages and sports sites, he was asked to begin writing sports articles. Bush did that for one client, but eventually decided to start his own site, which has given him the opportunity to broaden his coverage beyond the Bucks. “I really like engaging with the Bucks fans, but wanted to engage with fans from all sports—NBA, NFL, NCAA basketball and football, MLB, and some tennis,” he says. Bush writes many of the articles for sportstag.org, and hires others to write for the site as well. In addition, running @anklebreaker (an Instagram page featuring basketball highlights owned by @ AceMedia) puts Zander in touch with another 70,000 followers. Not just a sports spectator and analyst, Bush played varsity tennis during his freshman year at HPHS. He loved playing the sport, but realized the aspect he liked best was the team camaraderie. In fact, connecting people and encouraging team spirit and exchanges between fans is something Bush likes so much, he recently decided to create an Instagram account to post news about the HPHS basketball team, t h e

Giants. Called @gianstbball, the account celebrates game days, and posts final scores for the games, plus photos and “Player of the Week” features. Bush approached team coach Paul Harris last fall to ask if he could create @giantsbball to give students a new way to support and connect with the team. Coach Harris was not only enthusiastic, but invited Bush to travel on the bus to games, and included him in team events. He’s also always guaranteed good views for taking photographs of the team in action. “Before @giantsbball, there was little info on the team out there,” says Bush. “Since it started, I’ve gotten a lot of feedback from people that they like having a place they can go for all this. It’s also been really nice for alumnae, who now have a way to stay updated.” Looking ahead, Zander says his long-term goal is to go to Marquette University to take his sports writing to the next level. “Ultimately?” he sums, “I’d love to run a professional sports team’s social media.That would be incredible.” To read sports coverage by Zander Bush, visit sportstag. org.
