BATTER UP AS DYLAN PROVENZANO READIES FOR HIS SECOND BATTLE WITH CANCER, THE ANTHONY RIZZO FAMILY FOUNDATION STEPS IN TO HELP. less likely to put immunocompromised Dylan in additional danger. As a result, the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation has stepped in— spearheading a fundraiser through GoFundMe to help with the financial portion of Dylan’s treatment and transportation. “Dylan is a fighter, says Abby Suzarez, Executive Director of the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation. “We are proud to support him and his entire family as he beats cancer for the second time.” With the foundation’s help, more than $19,000 has been raised for the Provenzano family, with a goal of $50,000. According to a statement released by the foundation: “The hope here is for us to help with the financial piece, so the family c an f ocus on healing Dylan. All Dylan wants to do is play baseball and he should be able to.” The teenager has a battle ahead of him, but with the community, his family, and the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation fighting behind him, hopefully his journey is a little easier.

In 2017, the Provenzano family’s world was turned upside down when teenager Dylan, was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma—a rare type of cancer that appears in bones and the soft tissue around them. After spending most of the year in and out of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, completing chemotherapy and surgeries, Dylan headed home. But, unfortunately, the good news was shortlived. For three years, Dylan showed no signs of the disease, until July 2020. A mass was found during a scan of Dylan’s lungs, forcing him back into treatment and surgery was done to remove the mass—eventually confirming the return of Ewing Sarcoma. According to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Ewing Sarcoma is a cancerous tumor that mainly affects bones and the tissue around bones. Although rare, it is the second most common cancer in children. With treatment, around 70 percent of children are cured, but need ongoing scans to ensure it doesn’t return, like in Dylan’s case. Despite the upcoming testing and treatment, the Provenzano family is staying positive. They’ve decided to pursue a second opinion out of state while a tentative treatment plan is put in place at Lurie Children’s again. As one would expect, this comes at a great cost to the family. BUNNY & BABE A NEW WINNETKA BOUTIQUE BLENDS CLASSIC AND MODERN WITH A TWIST. BY RONI MOORE NEUMANN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
North Shore women looking for classic style with a twist of provenance can count on the relatively new upbeat fashion outpost in Winnetka: Bunny & Babe. This fresh and modern retail shop, named for two American style icons, Bunny Mellon and Babe Paley, is infused with their essence and interpreted with the refreshing eye of owner Peyton Merrill. Bunny Mellon was best known as a gifted gardener with royal means, infallible taste, and her confidante—and client—Jacqueline Kennedy. Reportedly, it was President Kennedy who, over lunch in Cape Cod, requested that Mellon redesign the White House Rose Garden. Mellon’s decision to anchor the Rose Garden with four magnolia trees—one placed at each corner of the garden—was considered a grace note, given her ethos that “nothing should be noticed.” Babe Paley was an American socialite whose second husband William S. Paley built CBS into one of the foremost radio and television network operations in the U.S. Named to the International Best-Dressed Hall of Fame in 1958, Truman Capote included Paley and Mellon, along with high society chums Frank Sinatra, Lee Radziwill, Rose Kennedy, Lynda Bird Johnson, Norman Mailer, and Arthur Schlesinger Jr. at Capote’s Black and White Ball held in honor of Katharine Graham. A classic flavor is featured throughout the boutique, nestled in a retail enclave on Chestnut Street in the middle of the bustling village. Bunny & Babe offers a breath of fresh fashion air, with the interior marrying shades of blue, lavender, and pops of leopard print. Complete with a cocktail cart, bedecked with crystal lowballs and comfy chairs, the sitting area has a homey, inviting vibe—perfect for trying on resort wear and smart sundresses for destinations from Palm Springs to Palm Beach, while mulling over hair scrunchies crafted f rom vintage Hermès scarves and curated giftware and home goods. The shop’s look and feel is the work of a cheerful collaboration between Merrill along with Cindy Galvin of Bardes Interiors along with contractor Rutledge Smith and Michael Hershenson Architects. This partnership, wellhoned through past projects, was a true meeting of the minds, leading to elevated design elements including surprisingly high ceilings, emitting natural light illuminating the handsome inventory. Portraits of Bunny and Babe are showcased with white trellis detail covering an archway, along with featured topiaries, a nod to Bunny’s world-renowned gardening. With a desire to invest both resources and talent to enhance the retail footprint in Winnetka, Merrill says, “Personally, I love to shop locally. There is a lot to be said for customers wanting to touch, try on, and feel the clothing they are buying. We will be super focused on providing the best customer service and keeping up with that immediate gratification that women want today,” she continues. Inspiration for the space included Aerin Lauder’s boutiques in East Hampton and Palm

A mother of three children from middle school to college, Merrill’s husband Topher grew up in Winnetka and the two met at Roanoke College in V irginia, where Merrill majored in history. For their first five years of marriage, the pair lived in London where Merrill’s taste and appreciation for design continued to evolve. The daughter of an artist and advertising agency owner, Merrill credits her mother as her original design and color inspiration. Merrill’s early career included professional

stops at retail giants Ann Taylor, J.Crew, and Thomas Pink in visual merchandising. Merrill felt that the time was right—personally and professionally—to embark on opening a retail store in her hometown. “I decided to open Bunny & Babe once my two older kids were away at school, as I have been waiting for the right time to jump. I have always wanted to open my own business and my wheelhouse is retail. I saw the need for that middle of the road, advanced contemporary price point for women’s ready to wear in Winnetka and decided to give it a shot,” she says. Of course, opening just as the pandemic hit has been difficult, but Merrill reveals that the local customer base and the response on Instagram has been incredibly positive despite the conditions. “We are so grateful for the support of this community,” she adds. KING OF HOPE WILMETTE’S CHRIS TARZON ADVOCATES FOR THE OFFERINGS OF AN ENDURING, DIFFERENCE-MAKING NONPROFIT. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
Shortly before Grandma Eleanor, an avid fisherman, died and received her license to fish for halos atop the heavenly waters above, she opened an eye as her grandson, Chris Tarzon, shared a bit of news. “I told her I had broken her bass record,” Tarzon, 46, recalls. “She then opened both eyes, looked right at me, and squeezed my hand. Hard. My grandmother introduced me to fishing when I was 5 or 6. She was an artist, a painter. You know what else she was? Tough—the toughest person on the West Side of Chicago. “Fishing,” the Wilmette resident adds, “is my happy place. I’ve experienced some of the best moments of my life while fishing. The process of fishing, the culture, all of it excites me. And I name my lures crazy names. ‘Devil Dog,’ for example.” Tarzon’s storytelling hooks me. But my tackle box contains more questions about Boys Hope Girls Hope (BHGH) of Illinois than it does inquiries about jigs and reels. Tarzon—a good sport whose optimism tank has been stuck on Full forever—jumps at the chance to laud the privately funded, multi-denominational nonprofit that helps academically capable and motivated children-in-need meet their full potential and become well-educated, career-ready men and women for others. That he’s chairman of Wilmette-based BHGH of Illinois and in his 10th year with the group that provides holistic services to foster growth in youngsters might have something to do with such enthusiasm. “We’re nurturing highly motivated young people—scholars, we call them—who have overcome adversity or seek to overcome adversity,” Tarzon says, noting Illinois’ affiliate of BHGH currently supports 24 scholars at its three partner schools: Loyola Academy and Regina Dominican High School in Wilmette, and St. Athanasius (7th and 8th graders) in Evanston. “I’m talking poverty, drugs, violence. Our three homes in Evanston [two for boys, one for girls] continue to provide safe environments. “I love the look in the eye I see from our scholars. I hear strong voices, a genuine appreciation for the opportunity to be heard. One told me he plans to get accepted at Spelman College in Atlanta, become a doctor, and then give back to some of our future scholars. Amazing.” The organization’s momentum to add a fourth

haven of hope to its housing roster continues to hum. “Boys Hope Girls Hope of Illinois is in growth mode in the middle of a pandemic,” says Tarzon, the managing director at Savills, where he specializes in the development of proactive and creative occupancy-related strategies that uncover real estate value on his clients’ behalf. A native of Oak Park, Tarzon executed half-nelsons as an indefatigable wrestler at Oak Park and River Forest High School. But wrestling wasn’t just a sport to the son of Ken, an ad man, and Pat, a former OPRFHS assistant athletic director. “Wrestling was a transformative experience,” says Tarzon, a 145-pound grappler in the early 1990s. “I was scrappy every minute of every period. Nothing I did on a mat resembled finesse.” Tarzon also battled on soccer pitches for the Huskies, served on the Student Council, and got elected senior class president. OPRFHS had never provided a Diversity Club for its students … until Tarzon formed one in his senior year. “I dug in, got involved in things in high school,” says Tarzon, who earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications at the University of Illinois. “I was gregarious back then, like my dad. I grew up in a sporty family, in a town Hemingway called home. My parents liked to put me in uncomfortable situations and then see how I’d react. My sister, Karen, and I studied together in Florence for a semester. That wasn’t too comfortable, but I’m glad I got that experience.” Tarzon worked in advertising sales at a Chicago radio station af ter college. For five of those years he sat right next to an account executive named Carrie, f rom Kansas City, Missouri. They became Mr. and Mrs. Tarzon and have three children: Christopher Jr., a sophomore-tobe at L oyo l a Academy, after hitting the books and the wrestling mats at New Trier High School in 201920; Lily, 13, and Emma, 11. Carrie is a North Shore residential real

estate agent. “Hardworking and amazing, with zero ego,” Tarzon says of his wife. “She inspires me. I’ve told her, ‘You’re my mentor.’ ” Boys Hope Girls Hope of Illinois Executive Director Karen Croteau, in three words?

“Our fearless leader,” Tarzon says. Tarzon became Captain Courageous some three years ago, signing up to compete in a “Dancing with the Brokers” fundraising event in Chicago. For two months he trained diligently with a professional dancer and then gyrated to his heart’s—and hips’—content before judges and a crowd of at least 2,000. Tarzon wowed ’em and a collected $20,000, every cent of the first-place prize going to Boys Hope Girls Hope of Illinois. Grandma Eleanor’s No. 1 angling student proved capable of netting something other than a record-setting catch. Today’s whopper has nothing to do with gills or fins and everything to do with COVID-19. His firm, Savills, addresses it, daily. Does it have a choice? “We’re asking, ‘What will the post-COVID-19 era look like?’ ” Tarzon says. “We’re also asking, ‘Why is the office environment important to a company?’ We’re about coming up with creative solutions and enhancing a company’s culture. It’s going to be a new world when we overcome this pandemic, but I tell companies, ‘Don’t make any drastic decisions now.’ “I’ll always be an optimist, a silver-lining guy. It will all work out; you’re never going to get a doomsday outlook from me. Never. I believe in people, and I believe in their resiliency. My business is steeped in people.” So is Boys Hope Girls Hope of Illinois. Its homes aren't just structures for promising, determined boys and girls. Staffers work in them. Social workers listen in them. Counselors advise in them. “It’s a fantastic organization,” Tarzon says. “It’s for gifted students who deserve the opportunities to reach their potential and break away from the cycle of poverty.
