Walk into artist Lisa Kinzelberg’s Winnetka home studio and you’ll see several paintings in progress. Large-scale abstracts, figurative works, and portraits encircle the room. One, a portrait of Kinzelberg reading to her children, leans against the western wall. Paint tubes and brushes, palettes with daubs of mixed colors, cans of walnut oil, and other bits of painterly flotsam spread out underneath. Inches away, an American Girl sports car is parked next to a Barbie dream house. Twists of Hot Wheels race tracks trail off toward a partiallybuilt Lego tower. A metal basket of soccer balls looms beyond that. This unintentional still life combining children’s play things and serious paintings, “exactly represents my life,” laughs Kinzelberg. When her children (Livvie, age 8 and Eli, age 10) are home, Kinzelberg is with them, momming the home ship with all its attendant games and books, meals and cleaning, sports, and homework. But when the kids are at school, eLearing, or at activities, she paints. A lot. In the last year Kinzelberg completed 14 paintings—12 of them commissioned for homes throughout the North Shore and in second homes in Arizona and Florida. Two years ago, Kinzelberg—who has a degree in Philosophy of Art and Art History from The College of Wooster, Ohio, had been painting and drawing as a hobby, trying to decide whether she should jump back into a Continued on PG 10

business career, or do something else. “When I came out of college, I didn’t want to be a starving artist, so I went into other work—first for a PR firm in Cleveland, and then for a management consulting firm in Chicago,” Kinzelberg recalls. “And then I stepped away from all that to raise a family. Once the children were both in school, I knew I wanted to do something to keep growing creatively. I was looking for that second act.” Talking about this with a close friend in the interior design business, Jessica Margot Federighi of Jessica Margot Design in Lake Forest, who was also a fan of her work, brought Kinzelberg her first commission. “Jessica had a client who needed a large piece of wall art in their family room,” Kinzelberg recalls, “and asked if I would be willing to create it. Jessica took a big risk referring me, but the result was fabulous. The client loved the work and I enjoyed the collaboration. So it was a win for everyone.” Since that initial project, word of Kinzelberg’s work spread fast. “Commissions are so much fun,” she says. “They
have a built-in challenge because they are collaborative. I love giving the client a finished piece that is not only an expression of how I view things as an artist but something that is meaningful to them too.” Growing up in Akron, Ohio, as the middle child in a family with three daughters, Kinzelberg developed that vision early. “I was captivated by all things visual,” she says. “When I was tiny, my mom recalls that I looked at the world differently than other toddlers, noticing and commenting on colors, proportions, scale, and texture. And I always found ways to communicate emotion in my drawings.” Kinzelberg’s childhood was full of culture and intellectual conversations. Her stepfather had been a professor of history, and her mother’s family members were musicians. “My grandfather, for example, was the music director for the New Jersey State Opera, a composer, guest symphony conductor, and nationally recognized timpanist. He played snare drum with Benny Goodman and Paul Samuel Whiteman. And my uncle is also a prominent music director, composer, and drummer.” In fact, Kinzelberg’s approach to painting, “is like drumming,” she says. “With a lot of empha-

When I paint, I too focus on rhythm and movement, intentionally interrupting lines, sculpting the surface, and so forth to create tension and feeling.” Most of Kinzelberg’s commissioned works are abstracts, which she creates by layering, removing, and re-layering paint. “It’s an iterative process,” she remarks. “I apply the paint, create a composition, and then start removing and reapplying the paint until an interesting color story and energy emerges. Even if it takes seven layers, I don’t stop until the piece feels alive.” A lot of the paintings Kinzelberg has been commissioned to create are in newer homes. “So I feel it is important for the pieces to have a feeling

of nature or history about them—water, stone, rock, sky … even brick. This way, they bring some soul and texture, story, and energy into the space.” Post-COVID-19, Kinzelberg hopes to do more shows locally, nationally, and eventually internationally. She’s also exploring the stories she tells with her art. “The artists I respect most have a cogent approach to their work—their art and philosophy of life are one and the same. BRAIN FOOD FOR THE FRONT LINES GLENCOE'S KAREN MALKIN TURNS A HOMEMADE RECIPE FOR ENERGY BARS INTO A GESTURE OF THANKS FOR HEALTH CARE WORKERS. BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Karen Malkin likes giving her clients healthy snacks. A Board Certified Health Coach based in Glencoe, Malkin helps people refine their diets and lifestyles so they can live healthier, more productive lives. Clients she sees at her office will often leave with a healthy bar of their choice—drawn from one of her 450 recipes, along with recipes for how to make the bars on their own. Like many others on the North Shore, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Malkin looked for ways to use her experience and expertise to give back to the community. It wasn't long before she came up with the Thank You Bar, a healthy snack she's donating to front-line health care workers in the region. "I have compassion for our health care workers because many of them are my friends who have really isolated themselves from their families and their friends," Malkin says. "They're going to bat working tireless hours on our behalf so that we can stay at home." Malkin says she was partly inspired by her four sons who, when the pandemic started, began going around to local restaurants to purchase meals and then delivering them to Highland Park Hospital employees. "I thought it was such a beautiful project and I decided I wanted to create a bar for health care workers," says Malkin. "So, I made a protein brownie version of my Super Food Bar and it's called the Thank You Bar." The bars are made with high-quality whey protein from grass-fed cows in New Zealand, almond butter, dates, cocoa powder, and cacao chips. The first 15,000 Thank You Bars are being donated to area hospitals. To date, Malkin has donated 5,000 bars to Northwestern Hospital, 3,000 to Rush University Medical Center, 2,000 to
Swedish Covenant Hospital, and 500 to Weiss Memorial Hospital. "I wanted to give them something that would nourish their souls and lift them up and allow them to feel appreciated and not forgotten," Malkin says. It's not just the frontline workers who are benefitting. "When I went to Northwestern, I was on the loading dock and I went to the janitorial staff and the maintenance staff and gave them bars because they are also very important, essential workers." While the intent of the
clients in my office and through motivational interviewing techniques I helped them evoke from within their own healing and 'aha' moments." Malkin emphasizes it's the client that does the work. She's there to coach and to guide. "We come up with a plan together by identifying small steps," she says. "By making small step changes we can really open up big doors to create real behavior change and lifestyle change and a much healthier person." While not seeing clients face-to-face due to the pandemic, the Thank You Bar project has given

project is to give health care workers a healthy snack that can help them get through a shift, Malkin notes the positive power of giving and is offering Thank You Bars for sale on her website for people to buy and give away themselves. "People are starting to feel pandemic fatigue and we start to feel sorry for ourselves while being stuck
at home," she says. "If anyone is starting to feel pandemic fatigue, this is a way of giving back." The Thank You Bar is an extension of Malkin's life's work, which is dedicated to helping people get and stay physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy. While diet is certainly an important component of overall health, Malkin sees a bigger picture. "My passion is basically to help change the way we practice medicine. I feel like I have this gift for healthy living and people are kind of drawn to that," Malkin says. "Before the pandemic, I met with
Malkin a new way to express her passion for health. "It's been so beautiful to just visit these hospitals. They've really spent time with me, too. I learned about the emergency department and how proud they are about their own protocols and their patients and their traditions," Malkin says. After months of staying close to home and going out masked like a bandit, it feels good to wander wild places with just the birds and the breeze. Explore nature preserves and deserted shorelines. Experience a natural high. Just what the doctor ordered. (Metaphorically speaking; doctors are something you’d rather not think about for the moment). But the natural high can be stopped short by a four-letter word: “work.” On summer days when you might’ve been wandering through the woods, you’ve been indoors with your nose in a computer. Rather than lazing at a lagoon, you were on

a conference call. That four-letter word again. Work. (Or maybe, “Zoom?”) Too bad, because you have herons to confer with at the Chicago Botanic Garden, greenery to enjoy along the Green Bay Trail. And tawny summertime deer, well, everywhere. Sure, work has good points, money being a main one. But we gotta have priorities. Maybe on the next nice day, close the computer, grab your boots and binoculars. It’s summer on the Shore, and there’s a natural high waiting out there. “For me, it all revolves around care. Care instills responsibility in what you do. Caring for something makes you want to work harder and aspire to excellence. It goes beyond your own work. It creates respect for other’s work and builds strong friendships along the way,” says Cotard. “My coaching philosophy embraces these everyday life principles.” Alex Cotard comes from a tennis playing family. He was raised in the beautiful village of Roquebrune Sur Argens in Provence, where, he says “everyone was playing the game— grandparents, parents, and cousins. I got my first racquet at 4-years-old and remember spending a lot of time hitting against the wall.” His father was a tennis coach for the French Federation and taught Alex the fundamentals, and he naturally inherited a passion for the game. “My father taught myself and my brother, Nicholas (also on the coaching staff at RCLB), to grow and become better players, then later mentoring us to become better teachers.” He played his first official tournament at age 10 in the French Riviera on red clay. Though he doesn’t recall the outcome, he vividly remembers, “loving the vibe and the intensity, the competitiveness, the respect of the sport.”

The U.S., for him, was always the country of sports and achievement. After moving here at age 22, drawn by a desire to “get closer to the winning culture and passion for sports,” he connected with French tennis coach Sylvain Guichard, the former head coach at Mississippi State who had become the general manager at RCLB. Guichard introduced him to a game plan of precise technical instruction, and with full support from club owners (and Lake Bluff residents) Dan Bruch and Gary Janko, he enthusiastically joined the team in 2008. Passion for RCLB, his fellow staff members, and their students is clear. Cotard shares, “As a coach, I like being on the court with our students, coaching close to the action. As a director, what truly makes me proud is seeing our teaching method and care paying off. Also, seeing the chemistry between our coaches and students on all the courts, having fun improving all the skills required by our sport, and developing self-esteem

TANKS A LOT WINNETKA AUTHOR CASTS A NET TO INSPIRE YOUNG ENTRERENEURS. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
The minnow version of the American business reality television series Shark Tank darted and foraged for the first time last year, right here along the North Shore. Winnetka children’s author Lowey Bundy Sichol cast Idea Tank for Kids, an entrepreneurship competition for budding CEOs (ages 8-13), and still can’t find a net big enough to hold the number of creative ventures it has generated. “The minds of kids and the potential of kids fascinate me,” says Sichol, who has presented her From an Idea to … book series to students across the nation. “My goal is to inspire future entrepreneurs, to let them know that ideas can change the world. I also tell them, ‘You don’t have to have a lot of money and you don’t have to come from the perfect family to launch an original, highly successful business.’ “Some entrepreneurs struggle,” adds the mother of three with an MBA degree from Dartmouth College’s Tuck School of Business. “But, more often than not, their passion helps them overcome the struggles.” The late Danish carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen founded the construction toy company The LEGO Group in 1932. Bottomless passion helped him overcome the destruction, by fire, of the company’s factory. When flames reduced two subsequent LEGO factories to mounds of embers, Christiansen’s perseverance and resiliency helped the company Phoenix above the ashes. Sichol—the wife of Adam and the mother of twin daughters/New Trier High School varsity golfers Peyton and Carter and son Tucker—wrote all about Christiansen in From an Idea to LEGO: The Building Bricks Behind the World’s Largest Toy Company. “My kids have no idea what life was like without Google,” says Sichol, author of From an Idea to Google: How Innovation at Google Change the World. The precursor to Google was any available reference librarian from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Remember those good ol’ days, from the Pleistocene Epoch to 1998? “Before I decided to write about Google, I felt a generation needed to know the story of the company,” Sichol continues. “How many kids know the names of the college friends (Larry Page and Sergey Brin) who started Google? I was in The Book Stall in Winnetka when I asked a woman there, ‘Does a series of children’s books about business leaders and their uplifting stories exist?’ She told me, ‘You should go home and write it.’ ” Sichol went home and wrote it. Her other two books in the series chronicled the lives and seminal ideas of Walt Disney and Nike’s Phil Knight. Sichol’s first two books first widened kids’ eyes in early 2019; the other two began to stir kids’ minds six months later. Her light-bulb moment before forming Idea Tank for Kids last summer reached an incandescent level while she was browsing at the Winnetka Public Library. Sichol had watched episodes of Shark Tank, with her initial reactions ranging from “This is kind of a clever show” to “This is awesome.” People embracing entrepreneurship and experiencing its amusementpark-ride ups and downs shouldn’t be limited to adults,

she figured. Sichol went home, this time to craft a description of her Idea Tank for Kids and email it to friends and neighbors and local business leaders. She needed judges and sponsors and mentors. “ The response,” Sichol says, “was amazing.”
The inaugural Idea Tank for Kids winner was a trio of Skokie fifth-graders, who had re-engineered rollerblades to produce ScootKnees, the original knee skates, and marketed the product to fans of shinny, hockey, and extreme dog riding. The 10-year-olds earned the $1,000 prize. Chicago Blackhawks owner Rocky Wirtz attended the competition. “You should have seen Rocky Wirtz

during the boys’ presentation,” Sichol says. “He was blown away.” This year’s Idea Tank for Kids competition—staged virtually— also accepted applications from future Elon Musks and Oprah Winfreys who live outside of Illinois. Tennessean Kierra Perkins, 13 years old and the second-year CEO of Kandles by Kierra, emerged victorious. “I remember discussing Kierra’s passion and energy and creativity, as well as the pitches from several of the other finalists, with some of our judges,” Sichol says. “We talked about how well kids are adapting in this pandemic era and how they’re thinking differently. I told the judges, ‘Yeah, this world is going to be okay with bright kids like these in it.’ ” The daughter of Harvey Bundy, an investment banker, and Blakely Bundy, an early childhood educator and a co-director of Defending the Early Years (DEY), Lowey was a highlight-per-inning star in the realm of softball at Brooks School in North Andover, Massachusetts. The Boston Globe named her an All-Star Most Valuable Player in softball after her senior year, during which she also played basketball and ran for the cross-country team. Her brothers in arms, from the moment she gloved her very first ground ball to the day she turned in her softball togs at Brooks School? Her three brothers. She continued her softball career at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, reaching base regularly for the Continentals by ripping line drives up the middle. Lowey met her future husband, Adam, in a dorm at Hamilton. “We were good friends first,” Lowey says. The Sichol family features nothing but very good golfers these days. The twins’ handicaps are closer to scratch than a four-foot putt is to a hole. “Competing in sports was a big part of the first half of my life,” says Sichol, who, for nearly 12 years, wrote case studies for professors at business schools, including Tuck, in Hanover, New Hampshire. “Sports toughened me up and served as reminders that you can’t win everything. Okay, so you lose; you can’t fear that outcome. I don’t have a lot of fear. Entrepreneurs are not afraid to fail. I’m a big believer in learning from mistakes. You mess up? You embrace mistakes. “That’s what great entrepreneurs do,” she adds. What gifted writers do: collect awards. Sichol’s heap includes honors from the National Science Teachers Association, the Children’s Book Council, the International Literacy Association, and the Texas Library Association. But not all forms of recognition hang in frames on walls or rest on mantels.
