From Lake Geneva to Michigan City to Saugatuck, the “lake house” has been a summer rite of passage for North Shore families for generations. But when the COVID-19 pandemic struck the nation earlier this year, the concept of having a second home to “get away to” with just a short drive took on a whole new meaning. Real estate professionals f rom Wisconsin to Indiana and Michigan are reporting an unprecedented interest in not only the proverbial weekend cottage, but fully accoutered luxury retreats where families can hunker down and enjoy the great outdoors safely and comfortably. “When the health crisis started, many of us thought we would have a slowdown due to economic uncertainty, loss of jobs, many people going on unemployment, and the state announcing a Safer at Home order,” says Gina

Nocek, a real estate agent with the @properties office in Lake Geneva. “Instead, in Southeast Wisconsin, we experienced a huge rush. Our area opened up much earlier than Illinois so many of our establishments are open for business. The downtown is packed with people walking around. Every day is like a weekend day here. We are a tourist area and the summer season is extremely busy.” This year, that “summer season” started a few months early—namely in the weeks that COVID-19 put the North Shore and the rest of Illinois in “shelter in place” mode. “ We saw an influx of Illinois residents coming to the area with their children,” she explains. “Many were looking for an escape— someplace safe.” It’s the same story in all our neighboring states and lakefront communities. Real estate executives at @properties have reported similar trends in Indiana and Michigan, particularly in those towns that are within an easy driving distance from the North Shore. Whether it’s Dune Acres, Indiana, or South Haven, Michigan, or the very nearby Lake Geneva, homes with lake access are more in demand than ever. George Schulz, a managing broker with @

properties, says records are being broken in both Michigan and Indiana. “For both markets, the word ‘retreat’ comes to mind for the post-pandemic world,” he says. “They have become literally that with more people turning their second home to what feels like full-time with working and going to school remotely—with some relocating as well as many moving up their second home purchase to have the ability to get away.” In Wisconsin, Lake Geneva continues to boom but its neighboring communities are also seeing a boost. “Lake Geneva has always a North Shore favorite, but it comes with a hefty price tag. Just a few minutes to the east is Twin Lakes with beautiful Lake Marie and Lake Elizabeth, or Powers Lake just outside of town,” explains Savanna Hansen, an @properties agent who partners with her husband, Jake Hansen, at their Lake Geneva office. “These lakes are more affordable than Lake Geneva but still very close to the shopping and restaurants that attract vacationers. If you go even further east you can find great deals on some of the smaller lakes such as Silver Lake, Paddock Lake, and Camp Lake. Depending on the lake activities you’re interested in and your budget,

we can find the perfect lake home for any buyer.” Nocek says the Lake Geneva market has also become very competitive—particularly if you want lakefront views or access. “There are currently 20 lakefront homes on the market and 8 have accepted offers, two are pending, and 14 have already closed,” she explains. Most telling? The highest pending sale is $13.9 million. As Donna Brongiel, a realtor at Keefe Real Estate in Lake Geneva, confirms, the oldfashioned lake house has gone glam. “My clients want the look and feel of a getaway, but don’t want another full-time home to take care of. They are looking for the same high-end quality they are accustomed to, such as high-end ranges,” she explains. “I have a client who bought a lake house and put in custom cabinets with a La Cornue CornFe’ range because she has one at home and loves to cook on it, so albeit she wanted a lodge feel, she also wanted to upgrade the basics to give her the luxury she’s used to.” Brongiel even has clients who’ve added a Continued on PG 12

“glamping” component to their properties, with luxury outdoor tents for guests—an amenity that is particularly appealing in these times. “Well there are definitely still true lake cottages in our area, but you will also find much more upgraded homes on the lake as well. In fact, we currently have one listing that was once a small cottage or cabin on the lake which is now a towering beauty with high-end kitchen, beautiful bar, and entertaining space, with custom woodwork throughout,” says Hansen. “Just because you’re at the lake, you don’t need to feel like you’re camping. You can have the same amenities at home with a slightly different view.” Whether your luxury retreat is on Lake Geneva or Lake Michigan (or any of the other small lakes in the vicinity), the common denominator is that coveted waterfront access. “Our luxury buyers are looking for a flat lakefront with a pier and boat slip. If they cannot get the type of pier and boat slips available to them, they are looking for boat delivery or access to boats,” says Brongiel. “We’ve also seen the use of concierge boat services—to have someone prep the boat with ice, alcohol, food, snacks, f resh towels, and then remove the cover and button up the boat are some of the services offered." If we don’t need to go to our offices anymore, then “home” can be anywhere. “With remote access a new way of working, many people are willing to accept the occasional long commute,” Nocek explains. “I think many businesses also realize that working from home can be as productive as being in the office so this may be the future of working that allows people to relocate to wherever they want to live.” Hansen agrees. “We are definitely seeing more people enjoy time at their second homes now than they did before,” she says. “Many are even working remotely f rom their second homes on an almost permanent basis.” One thing that will never change is the appeal is getting away from it all and the charm of escaping into the bucolic lakef ront communities we’ve grown to love. “There is something so special and unique about owning a home on the lake and buyers are looking for a home and emulates their vacation mode,” says Hansen. “Whether it’s high-end and classy or a little rustic and woodsy, finding the home that fits the buyer’s taste is most important.” Indeed. Though perhaps Brongiel says it best: “Nothing is sweeter than seeing kids outside fishing, skateboarding, or playing baseball in the community parks. It gives people a feeling of being ‘whole’ again.”

NEVER FORGET: REMEMBERING HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR MAGDA BROWN A TRIBUTE TO THE LIFE OF A WOMAN WHO SURVIVED AUSCHWITZ-BIRKENAU AND SERVED ON THE ILLINOIS HOLOCAUST MUSEUM & EDUCATION CENTER’S SURVIVOR SPEAKER’S BUREAU. EDITED BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

The life of Magda Brown, Survivor of Auschwitz-Birkenau and a cherished, longstanding, and dedicated member of the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center’s Survivor Speaker’s Bureau, is being remembered and honored in the wake of her passing last month. According to an announcement issued by the museum, Magda was on a mission to share her story with as many people as possible—from oneon-one interviews to auditorium speeches. She reached over 100,000 hearts and minds across the world. Magda (Perlstein) Brown was born June 11, 1927, in Miskolc, Hungary. In March 1944, Germany invaded Hungary, first establishing a ghetto. On Magda’s 17th birthday, she was deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau on one of the final transports along with her entire family. Her parents and much of her extended family died in the gas chambers. Her brother was the only family member to survive. In August 1944, Magda was deported to Münchmühle, in Stadtallendorf, Germany, where she worked at the site of one of Germany’s

largest munitions factory. She was one of the 1,000 Jewish Hungarian women from Birkenau chosen for this job. In March 1945, she was sent on a death march to Buchenwald concentration camp. Magda and several prisoners were able to escape, hiding in a nearby barn. She was eventually liberated by the Sixth Armored Division of the U.S. Army. After the war, she made contact with relatives in the United States, who sponsored her immigration to Chicago in September 1946. For 40 years, Magda worked in a physician’s office as a Certified Medical Assistant. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert Brown, mother of Rochelle and Bruce, and beloved grandmother of many.

Magda Brown Although it was painful to remember her horrendous experiences, Magda believed her story, as well as others, must be told. In October 2018, Magda was scheduled to speak at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The tragic shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue took place the day before, but she didn’t hesitate to board the plane,

saying, “Now the world needs to hear the message even more. Let’s go.” “ There was nothing better than when Magda walked into the museum and gave you her signature ‘grandma hug and kiss,’” said Susan Abrams, CEO of the Illinois Holocaust Museum. “And everyone knew better than to try and talk her out of something. Nothing was going to keep her away from a speaking engagement— not weather, her health, or even an act of terrorism.” It was her belief until the very end: “The telling and remembrance of Survivors’ stories will reassure those who doubt the Holocaust that it was a very real and frightening period in the 20th century.” In one of her final interviews, Magda noted, “I will continue to tell my story. I’ll tell my story until the good Lord wants me in his corner.” In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the "Magda on a Mission" fund at Illinois Holocaust Museum, a donation for a brick in her honor on the Museum's tribute pathway, or to the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS). Funeral arrangements were limited to family, due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, the museum says there will be a memorial service in the fall, in celebration of Magda's life. May her memory be a blessing.

Kohl Children’s Museum re-opened on Saturday, July 25, with a new series of weekly programs after a months-long closure due to COVID-19. The new Kohl Kids Live programming will offer guests five personalized sessions of interactive programs led by museum educators, in small groups of no more than 10 guests at a time. “We take pride in creating high-quality, interactive educational experiences through play,” says Stephanie Bynum, Vice President of Programs, who oversaw development of the new offerings. “When the State of Illinois Re-Opening Phase 4 guidelines were released restricting interactive exhibits, we saw the opportunity to reimagine our experiential learning environments to reduce common-touch elements and comply with guidelines in an innovative way.” Among the new activities are story time, a science demonstration, theater activities, physical fitness games, and an art studio project that will be available during 90-minute sessions. The museum will have weekly themes—summer fun, insects, and music—that coincide with the activities. Weather permitting, all sessions will be held in the Museum’s two-acre outdoor Habitat Park exhibit. To stay on course with CDC and Illinois Public Health guidelines, the Glenview-based museum has put in place strict cleaning and social distancing measures to keep families safe. “We heard our members

We have worked hard to re-engineer our exhibits for an outdoor experience, while preserving the engaging and fun family learning experience that is our hallmark.” Bynum adds: “We bring programs to life through more verbal engagement and very small

group interaction, almost like providing individual field trips to our guests.” Kohl Kids Live programming is scheduled to run Wednesday through Sunday with sessions starting every 20 minutes between 9 a.m. and 3:20 p.m. Advance registration is required, and museum members may reserve their tickets 14 days in advance. Dining al fresco has always been big on the North Shore. This summer, it’s big by necessity. Tables are farther apart, but it’s still al fresco, or “fresh air.” Seeing this brings back memories of carefree days. You take a nostalgic trip in time. You remember picking up a bag of hot dogs and fries from a North Shore hot dog joint on a summer midday in an earlier decade. You take this good stuff to the beach. Ah, the smell of sunscreen and warm sand. You and your group find a table along the breezy lakefront.

Bubbling drinks in icy cups, hot dogs with the works, crisp fries. No wonder plump sea gulls were hovering. After some beach time, you all went to the ice cream shop in town where you got cones and took ‘em to the town square. There, you licked, the cones melted, and now the recollection melts, too. But that was al fresco, OK. And the al fresco dining you see around today’s Shore brings it back. REY OF LIGHT NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY FILM TEACHER KRIS REY DISCUSSES HER LATEST FILM. BY GREGG SHAPIRO THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Now, more than ever, when there’s so much uncertainty and fear in the world, we need a reason to laugh, to escape from our troubles. Luckily, we have Kris Rey’s new movie I Used to Go Here (Gravitas Ventures). An official SXSW selection, I Used to Go Here is a hip comedy about a first-time novelist who is invited back to her alma mater to give a reading from her book. Unfortunately, her life is crumbling around her, including her canceled wedding, the cancelation of her book tour, problematic book reviews, and that’s just the beginning. Rey’s hilarious screenplay spins these traumas into comedy gold. I had the pleasure of speaking with the Northwestern University film production teacher before the movie’s release later this month.

I Used to Go Here joins a growing family of movies, including Wonder Boys and Storytelling, and television shows, such as season four of Girls, that are set in Creative Writing MFA programs. What makes that setting appealing to you as a writer and director? It's personally inspired. I didn't go for creative writing; I went to school for film. I didn't get my masters; I got my bachelor's. I’m a little hesitant to say this out loud in an interview, but the movie was inspired because of a trip I made back to not only my university, but to a bunch of different universities. When my last feature played Sundance 2015, I got invited to all these universities afterwards. Before the movie came out, and after it had premiered, I got invited to like five different universities for some reason to screen the movie for students and to do talks. I guess I was 35, and I felt like, “Wow, isn't this strange?" I relate so much more to the students than I do to the professors, except I'm old. But all the students think I’m cool because I made a movie. Nothing weird, like in the film, happened to me where I stayed there for a long time and hung out with everybody. I went to my alma mater—they brought me back to Southern Illinois University, which is where the movie takes place— and I took the train down from Chicago to Carbondale. I started writing the outline for this movie on the way there, before I even arrived and experienced it, I started writing the outline. The thing that I was afraid sounded stupid was that I didn't want it to be a movie about a filmmaker. So, I was like, I don't know, she's a writer. Gillian Jacobs, who people will recognize from the TV show Community, plays the main character Kate in I Used to Go Here. What was it about Gillian that made her right for the part? I just vibed with her so much when we met. I sent her the script. It's so funny, because now with Coronavirus you're talking to everybody virtually. I had met a lot of potential actors I had met in person. I had flown out to L.A. and had a lot of meetings with people sort of to consider them for the part. Gillian was doing a play in New York, so we weren't able to meet a person. She read the script and we met over Skype. I just loved her! She also has a reputation of being great, really nice and cool to work with. The rumors are true.

I knew that this was going to be a problem because I had made my last feature, Unexpected, also features an Illinois university. At the time, we were trying to use U of I, but they wouldn't let us. We had to make up a fake university and we're using the same fake university here, which is Illinois University, which is not real. But we shot our exteriors at Carbondale. Honestly, everyone I talked to at the university was awesome. They’re still in communication with me. They’re so excited! The movie trailer was released yesterday. They want to arrange some kind of screening there. I really loved going to school there. I try to support them and the film school as much as I can. The movie features poetry and novel excerpts by characters within the script. Did you find it rewarding or challenging to create the writing by Kate and April? Challenging. I would say both rewarding and challenging. It was fun and easy for me to come up with what she reads from her book because it's kind of supposed to be bad. That, I think, was fun for me. It was much harder to come up with the poem that April reads, because it’s supposed to be good. I’m not a writer in that way.

I Used to Go Here also has some other wonderful details. For instance, Kate runs into an old classmate named Bradley Cooper (played by Jorma Taccone). Does actor Bradley Cooper know he gets name-checked? There’s no way he knows that [big laugh]. I have no connections to Bradley Cooper personally. I don't know anyone that worked on the movie that does. Maybe he's crossed paths with The Lonely Island guys (Taccone, Andy Samberg and Akiva Schaffer, who produced the movie), but they didn’t mention it to me. So, who knows if he'll ever find out? There’s also a scene where Kate goes through her ex- fiancée Michael’s Instagram posts and sees him with a woman named Rae who happens to be you.

That truly is a hallmark of an independent film. There's so much to figure out when you are making a movie and one of those things we left until the end. We didn't have the budget to hire an actress to just be in a photo. Totally for ease, I play the woman. The guy who plays Michael was my first assistant director Morgan's husband. Declan Deely, he's just a friend of mine and my first A.D.’s husband. There are some photos where we're in swimsuits at the beach, and that's just because Morgan and I were location scouting the lake location, and Declan came along for the ride. I said,

Without giving away too much, something wonderful happens to Tall Brandon (Brandon Daley), one of the IU students who lives in the house where Kate used to live. How did you come up with that idea? I don’t know how to not give it away. Are you talking specifically about the kiss?

Yes. In the script, they don't kiss. In the script they sort of shake hands and you can just tell they’re into each other, that he's coming back to hang out with her. Then on set, these two actors just had so much chemistry. Brandon kept joking and saying, “I feel like I’m going to kiss her. I feel like I’m going to kiss you.” She was so smitten with Brandon. She

was like, “Oh my God, he’s so funny.” I said, “Do you guys want a dry run where you kiss?” They were like, “Sure.” We just did one take of it and that’s what’s in the movie.

What do you like best about teaching film production at Northwestern? Getting to know the students, for sure. I love them. I think I had something like 10 interns on this film. A lot of students from Northwestern that had been through my classes intern on the movie. For one, I love teaching. I used to be a high school teacher in Chicago Public Schools. Teaching runs in my family and I love teaching. Teaching film at the university level is such an education for me. I’m constantly learning things from them and learning things from myself watching the stuff that they bring in. I teach production, so watching this stuff that they bring in and giving notes on what they're doing always teaches me something. I love forming these relationships with them. One of my former students stayed in Chicago and ended up becoming my assistant on this movie. Like I said, I had 10 or so interns on the film that were current or former Northwestern students. There's another sort of secret reason that I love teaching at Northwestern is that I am always encouraging them to stay in Chicago. I really love making films here. I love Chicago. I love the community here. We have such a plethora of students here because we have all of these wonderful film schools. We have all this talent and then they graduate, and they feel like they have to move to Los Angeles or New York. Depending on what they want to do, sometimes that is the best move. If you want to make independent film, I always encourage them to stay. You have friends here, you have resources here, you have me here. Stay here and try and make your own work. It's a great place to make films.

I enjoy the challenges of Dr. Patrick Birmingham’s father, John, was essentially Mayberry Sheriff Andy Taylor in a pharmacist’s white coat for decades. He’d work every day but Christmas as an independent pharmacist in Connecticut and often deliver—using his car, after business hours—medicinal drugs to homebound elderly folks. Sheriff Taylor didn’t carry a gun; John Birmingham, who retired at age 75 two years ago, didn’t mind doing whatever it took to trigger smiles from his customers. “My father was the last independent pharmacist standing in the area where I grew up because he never treated people like a number, like some pharmacy chains do,” says Dr. Birmingham, a Winnetka resident and a NorthShore University HealthSystem orthopaedic surgeon since 2012. “I worked for him in junior high, as a cashier. I often heard what he said to his customers; watched him listen to them, patiently. He’s wise, even keeled, and while working, he was the master at staying calm and dealing with people who were upset for some reason. “I had stayed up late at night when I was younger so I could see my dad when he got home after work.” Patrick’s dad once brought home a green parrot late at night. He had collected the squawker, in lieu of money, at the end of a house call. “People sometimes bartered with my dad,” recalls the son, an only child. “You should have seen my mom, Barbara, the night Clancy (the parrot) entered our house. She was livid.” But Clancy’s new owner eased the tension in no time, telling his wife, “Hey, I didn’t accept the monkey.” The good pharmacist’s son interacts with bears these days. Make that, Bears, as in Chicago’s National Football League gridders, who train in Lake Forest. Dr. Patrick Birmingham, 43, has worked for eight years as a team physician with the Bears’ head physician, Dr. Mark Bowen. “It’s interesting, getting to treat and operate on world-class athletes,” says Birmingham, a standout tailback/defensive back at Saint Bernard School in Uncasville, Connecticut, before making the football team as a walk-on wide receiver at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. “They're big and fast, they heal quickly, and their goals are different than most of the other patients I see. “People ask me all the time, because of the uncertainty associated with COVID-19, ‘Will the Bears play in 2020?’ I usually tell them, ‘No comment.’ I have no idea. Does anyone?” Birmingham mends anterior cruciate ligament tears, rotator cuff tears, and hip labral tears, among other frayed connective tissues. He puts damaged weekend warriors (middle-aged athletes erroneously thinking they’re indestructible) back together again and extends the careers of injured prep and college athletes. Remember former Bears defensive lineman William “The Refrigerator” Perry? Birmingham was 8, maybe 9, when the 335-pound Perry helped the Bears win Super Bowl XX in 1986. Decades later a couple of Birmingham’s patients lost badly

repairing an elbow or a knee or a shoulder and helping people return to sports, return to a healthy life.

in nonfatal encounters with limbless, headless fridges. One had used an arm in a futile attempt to save a falling refrigerator off a truck; the other had sustained a serious injury versus the strapping appliance in his basement. Amanas 2, Humans 0. “I don’t treat life-threatening injuries, but what I get to do has its rewards,” says Birmingham, the father of six children (ages 5-14) with his wife, Sarah, a psychiatrist. “I enjoy the challenges of repairing an elbow or a knee or a shoulder and helping people return to sports, return to a healthy life. It’s nice, receiving a photo or a newspaper clipping of a game-winning touchdown from a former patient. Or a picture of a thankful former patient smiling after completing a marathon.” Birmingham somehow found the time to coach JV football (4th-6th graders) at The School of All Saints Faith, Hope & Charity in Winnetka last fall. He stressed fundamentals and fun. Not so fun for the good doctor, back in his freshman year at Holy Cross, was the bulk of his course load. Originally a pre-law student, Birmingham took political science and philosophy and liked each subject about as much as a tailback likes to be smothered in the backfield on a third-downand-1 play. He picked himself up and thrived in science and math classes en route to a pre-med degree in chemistry. Birmingham attended Loyola University’s Stritch School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. The surgeon is board certified in sports medicine, too. Patrick sat next to Sarah at a GWU orientation before they sat across from each other, over sushi, on their first date at a Dupont Circle restaurant. “I knew right away,” Birmingham says. “She was the one, the one I wanted to marry.” Their offspring equals the number of a football team’s offensive line, tight end included. “I’m doing my best,” Birmingham says of fatherhood. “I remember, after the birth of our first child, I learned to install a child’s car seat. That made me certified, as a car-seat installer. That also made me feel certified, in a way, as a dad. The most important thing, when it comes to being a parent in my mind, is being present for all six. I lend an ear as often

as I can, and I try to be understanding.” The early weeks of the pandemic allowed him to spend more time under his roof at home, where he and Sarah staged three full-blown birthday bashes. The chef in Birmingham made way more than a token appearance during Illinois’ shelter-inplace order. “I explored my abilities in the kitchen for a good six weeks, trying new recipes and making all kinds of meals for my family,” says Birmingham, who resumed performing elective surgeries on May 11. His Chicken Parmesan was a huge hit. Think walkoff grand slam, in the middle of a pennant race. Family members extended pristine plates and asked for seconds. “And they even ate leftovers, surprisingly,” Birmingham reports. Family man, surgeon, Bears physician, football coach … cook. Just when you thought Dr. Patrick Birmingham couldn’t possibly find a spot on his head for another hat, he makes room up there for a toque. Take a bow, Doc. Carefully.
