The temperature was sultry, the air was calm, and Jennifer Hudson—Chicago’s own Oscar- and Grammy-winning performer—dramatically began her Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert fundraiser at the back of the Ravinia Pavilion on Sunday, July 14, with a deep, soulful rendition of “How Great Thou Art.” Dressed in purple (a hue that matched both the gala invitations and the party décor) Hudson followed that compelling opening by walking the stage for the Ravinia Women’s Board’s annual Gala Benefit Evening—shaking hands with audience members every step of the way. Met with thunderous ovations, her set featured tributes to Prince and Whitney Houston and included her big song from her Oscar-winning role in Dreamgirls, “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.” Hudson, who made her Ravinia debut in 2011, will soon sing the Andrew Lloyd Continued on PG 10

The collar-style, beaded necklace encircling Michelle Leonardo’s neck shimmers with the light of more than 720 Swarovski crystals and more than 4,700 individual beads. Another 500 Swarovskis in the matching bracelet twinkle as she flips her wrist, folding back the glimmering cuff to show an elaborate underlayment of silver-beaded pattern work. Leonardo explains that each bead was picked up by a needle and stitched, one-by-one, into place—giving structure and texture to the crystals up top. “This is a new category of jewelry most people aren’t yet familiar with,” explains Leonardo, who unveiled her Michelle Leonardo Design Jewelry Collection late last month in Wilmette. “I sometimes describe it as bead engineering, because of the elaborate structures and incredible details that are built together with tiny beads in multiple layers. It’s not your simple strand of beads on string.” The collection includes an assortment of more than 140 exquisitely beaded pieces, many in matched sets (cuffs and necklaces; earrings and bracelets) with names like Scottsdale, Paragon, and Hanalei. All are graphic and sophisticated, but breezy. They can be mixed and matched, or worn layered with silver pieces by other designers, says Leonardo. “Customers tell me my jewelry looks elegant, but with a beachy feel,” says Leonardo. “Some Continued on PG 10

Others say they think of Hawaii.” These are all apt descriptions for what Leonardo has conceived with her inaugural collection. Born out of what she calls her “graphic-design-framed brain,” the pieces reflect Leonardo’s background in graphic design and advertising art, as well as her inspiration from nature. “My favorite color is turquoise. It’s my branding color and you see it a lot in my work,” she says. “Turquoise echoes the peace and serenity I feel when traveling across oceans all over the world. In fact, water is a big influence in my work. The design for my Lake Reflections bracelet, for example—shifting patterns in turquoise and metallic green—came to me after looking at the lake one day, and trying to emulate the look of the water shimmering on Lake Michigan.” The graphic nature of Leonardo’s jewelry designs goes back to her childhood. Always talented in art, Leonardo says she used to love MC Escher tessellations: “You know? The fish into the bird and so forth?” she laughs. “I love changing, shifting patterns. When I’m doing my designs, it’s a lot like working out little puzzles and mini mosaics with little glass pieces. I get inspired thinking how one shape will fit with another.” Leonardo’s first experience with jewelry making came under the tutelage of her French grandfather, an artist who studied at L’Ecole Des Beaux Arts in Paris, and then taught classes in enamel arts. “He made jewelry, little trays, and plaques,” Leonardo recalls. “He always wanted me to be an artist. Although I loved art, I didn’t want to starve, so I chose to go into graphic design, which I knew could open the door to a world of possibilities.”
PRETTY IN PURPLE Cont. from PG 1 Webber classic “Memory” as Grizabella in the film adaptation of the Broadway mainstay Cats as well as star in the big-screen biopic Respect about Aretha Franklin, whose final full concert occurred at Ravinia in 2017. “There was a raw excitement when Ravinia first introduced Jennifer Hudson to our audiences in 2011, and for tonight’s gala we welcomed back a masterful artist in full control of her adoring audience and her phenomenal talents,” says Ravinia President and CEO Welz Kauffman of Highland Park, who booked this gala and all Ravinia concerts. “As she said onstage, Jennifer often comes to Ravinia as an audience member to watch our headliners perform, and it’s that love of music that makes her connect so beautifully with an audience. This was an event people will be talking about for years.” Nearly 800 guests attended the black-tie-optional gala, which grossed more than $1.1 million, making it one of the most successful in the 53-year history of the concert fundraiser—the only event Ravinia puts on for itself each year. Proceeds support the festival and its Reach Teach Play education program. George Hanson, who had served an assistant to Leonard Bernstein, conducted the CSO for the July 14 concert. Hudson’s knockout concert was followed with cocktails on Ravinia’s famous Lawn. A sumptuous three-course dinner catered by Food for Thought followed, featuring an appetizer “Summer Trio” of melon gazpacho, heirloom tomato panzanella, and marinated gulf shrimp on an avocado purée and criolla salad; followed by Chermoula-rubbed sea bass and whole roasted beef tenderloin over charred sweet corn, summer beans, and new potato cas-

Leonardo’s artistic talents won her a full, four-year scholarship in graphic design to Miami University of Ohio, followed by 10 years working as an art director for three different ad agencies in Chicago. When Leonardo’s daughter was born in 2013, she and her husband designed and built their house in Wilmette, and Leonardo left the advertising business. “But I really missed the creative work. So when my daughter slept, I’d make things. First paintings, but there is only so much wall space,” she laughs. “So then I turned jewelry.” Initially, Leonardo studied the beading patterns other designers had conceived, but quickly moved on to making her own. Sending three of her pieces to two national jewelry publications led to seeing all three featured on the cover of the magazines. “That was confirmation that I was on to something,” she says, smiling. The magazine cover appearances drove traffic to Leonardo’s website, where she advertised for skilled bead artisans in order to build the production team needed to launch her business. Leonardo’s pieces are priced to be accessible—$65 for the simplest beaded stud earrings on up to more elaborate earrings in the $115 to $150 range. Bracelets start at $295 and go up to $500 while necklaces range from $500 to $1,200. “The pricing is determined by the intricacy of the pattern and the amount of time it takes to make the piece,” Leonardo explains. “Each bead has to be picked up and sewn individually. It can take up to
10 hours for a skilled craf tsperson to make just one of the more intricate necklaces.” Currently, all sales are direct to consumer, either through the company website shop, at trunk shows, or at high-end art shows. For example, Michelle Leonardo Design will be part of the popular One of a Kind Show being held at Merchandise Mart in downtown Chicago from December 5 through 8. As the year progresses, expect to see more designs emerge.

“It’s funny, when you say ‘bead’ people automatically think ‘round’,” Leonardo muses. “But beads come in a whole slew of shapes and sizes. The options are unlimited. Twin Hasn’t Peaked Rising Lake Forest High School junior outside hitter Caroline Graham continues to show heaps of promise in volleyball circles. BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Among Caroline Graham’s escapes from volleyball is paddleboarding. The Lake Forest High School junior-to-be—a 6-foot-1 outside hitter and standout front-row force for the Sky High 16-1’s North Shore club team—negotiates her way atop bodies of water either near her home in Lake Forest or during visits to the home of grandparents Bill and Gretchen in Door County, Wisconsin. “Sometimes,” Graham says, “I’m on a paddleboard with two others. It’s not always easy, staying on the board when we’re out there. At times all three of us have fallen into the water.”
I play as much for my teammates as I do for myself. Yes, I want the ball, always want the chance to attack and win the point for my team, but what drives me is to get better as a player for my teammates. I also enjoy working with my teammates toward the same goals.

had attended golf camps in Oregon because her father was, and still is, an avid golfer. “My dad, I think, suggested I give volleyball a try in the third grade, after I had participated in golf camps,” Graham says. “I remember enjoying volleyball almost immediately, though my sister and I didn’t like the club volleyball experience in Portland because all of the other players on the team were older than we were.” The twins competed as seasoned veterans for The School of St. Mary fifth-grade volleyball team in 2013; all the other spikers were first-year competitors back then. Caroline Graham, a former Sky High 13 Purple club player, battled for the LFHS sophomore team, as a middle hitter, in her freshman year and made the Scouts’ varsity crew in 2018, when she shifted to a six-rotation outside hitter. The Ultra Ankle Junior Volleyball Association named Graham to its 2019 Watch List, and coaches from 12 Division I college volleyball programs have shown interest in her 4.95 GPA, volleyball abilities, and leadership traits. She and Davis, also an outside hitter, served as 16-1’s North Shore co-captains in the 60-match 2018-19 club season. “Caroline will have a lot of options to play college volleyball,” says Sky High 16-1’s North Shore coach Chas Kennedy, whose team trains in Libertyville.

Caroline pushes herself, truly wants to improve, and, as a coach, you couldn’t ask for more than that. “It’s been fun for me, watching her learn and develop as an athlete,” adds the coach, in his 25th year at Sky High. “Her next two years—in high school and club volleyball—will be special ones.” Graham attended girls’ volleyball camp at LFHS on July 15, a day after returning from a well-deserved family vacation in Door County. The camp concludes on July 25. The Scouts, seeded 10th in the Class 4A Grayslake Central Sectional last year, lost to Mundelein High School’s eighth-seeded Mustangs in a regional semifinal. LFHS lost six of the 16 varsity players to graduation in 2019; the Graham twins and libero/outside hitter Kelly McCaskey collected varsity letters as sophomores. Who knows? Decades ago, as a student at Niles West High School in Skokie, Michael Klein built a foosball table for an assignment in shop class. His teacher gave him a ‘B+’ instead of an ‘A’ for a very good reason. “The height of the game table I turned in was incorrect; I built the legs 2 inches too short,” the 57-year-old Klein recalls. “I had miscalculated.” He lived. He learned. “Measure twice, cut once—that’s what I learned,” adds Klein, his grin widening with each word. As CEO of The Airoom Companies— based in Lincolnwood and founded in 1958 by his late father, Burton—Klein now attempts to achieve nothing short of perfection. Airoom’s Design-Build philosophy and S.T.A.R.T. (System to Assure Resources and Timing) Process encompass every aspect of home remodeling and building. Airoom combines architecture, engineering, construction, interior design, purchasing, and financing for home additions, highend kitchens, luxury master baths, and custom homes. Airoom, which majors in personalized home remodeling and renovations, has designed and built more than 16,000 projects in the city and suburbs. Airoom wants you to love your home again. “We are in the business of completing custom, one-off home projects that match each customer’s style and wishes, and we’ve stood the test of time,” says Klein, who served as vice president of Airoom from 1984-2000 and is a founding member of Chicago’s National Association of Remodeling Industry. “We’ve survived in a very difficult industry.” It’s also a field with plenty of rewards for Klein, perhaps none bigger than working with his eldest son, 23-year-old Maxx, an Airoom project development manager for about a year. Like his father, Maxx graduated f rom Indiana University’s Kelly School of Business. “It’s been nice,” says Klein, who, with his wife, Maryfran, has lived in Winnetka for 25 years (and usually orders an omelet with feta cheese at Café Aroma, his favorite breakfast spot in his hometown). “Youth and optimism,” he adds, “can be unstoppable. Maxx has that spark, that constant enthusiasm.” Michael Klein’s father? “He had discipline, along with a strong work ethic,” the Lincolnwood native notes. “Most people born in the 1930s, they became start-

up, entrepreneurial businesspeople. My interest in doing what I’m doing now began in shop class in high school, making furniture and other pieces. I loved shop, took every shop class I could.” Among his passions today is helming the Airoom Charitable Foundation, which he launched in 2003 with a primary target in mind—to provide research funds for heart valve disease. His family has a history of the condition. His middle child, 22-year-old Jack, received an aortic valve replacement at the age of 18. The foundation funneled capital toward the creation of a medical imaging center at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. “My wife and I felt strongly about selecting a specific issue that the foundation would address,” says Klein, whose third child with Maryfran is Natalie, 20. “You have to have a focus. You have to push technology, as well as support a particular type of medical research, if you’re truly interested in seeing breakthroughs. “ We ’r e excited about the foundation and L u r i e ’s efforts in the partnership.” Klein considers Airoom a viable associate with homeowners in an e vol ving housing market. The cost of construction, he reveals, has risen 27 percent in the last three years. In his first 25 years in the industry, the price of most homes—even if a homeowner did little to enhance or update the asset—“kept going up, up, up,” sometimes in spite of the home’s old appearance. “You’ve heard homeowners say, ‘Well, our house has charm’,” says Klein, a member of YPO Gold, the National Kitchen and Bath Association, and National Association of Home Builders. “The word charm, in most cases, is code for ‘old and needs work.’ Buyers want fresh. Buyers want current. It’s important for people to

look at their homes as an asset that needs attention. Buyers don’t want your 20-year-old kitchens, baths, mudrooms, and musty basements. Today’s homeowners are finally realizing that it’s critical to prevent depreciation and devaluation by keeping the house updated and spaces current using today’s style, technology, and lifestyle requirements.

“You do that,” he adds, “and you’re protecting your asset from devaluation and getting more enjoyment and appreciation from your home at the same time. If you don’t, your obsolete home is going to take a haircut in price, as no one wants outdated without a major discount for the work and updating you never did. More focus on creating a current physical environment that enhances your family’s lifestyle and fun at home will most likely translate to better values when you want to sell.” Airoom’s home in Lincolnwood reflects that kind of healthy, farsighted thinking. Its showroom looks more striking than ever, since undergoing a transformation 18 months ago. Most of the 30,000 square-foot space was rebuilt to accentuate sturdy, sustainable materials and design trends in kitchens, appliances, baths, doors, and window technology. Back to Klein’s previous life, as a budding builder at Niles West HS. “I didn’t peak in high school,” Klein recalls. “I was still growing and was a late bloomer. I was a year younger than everybody else in my class. I was always chasing.” Today, that former chaser continues to run a company that’s well ahead of the pack in the remodeling industry.
