Every day, as late afternoon drifts into evening, Ramsey Lewis's wife, Janet Tamillow, brings him a glass of wine. It's the signal that his workday is over. It's time for dinner. Lewis, the Chicago-based jazz, classical pianist and Ravinia favorite, has won enough awards— including three Grammys—to cement his legacy as one of the best of his generation. Though he retired from performing three years ago (air travel was wearing on him) he still spends his days with what he calls his muse and, next to his wife, his best friend: His Steinway piano. When the COVID-19 pandemic made its presence felt, many industries were forced to adapt to a "new normal." Offices were closed, restaurants shuttered, and music venues—opera houses, concert halls, rock clubs—went silent. The lingering economic effects of these closings won't be known for a while, but musical artists who've had their work and careers turned upside down are finding creative ways to press forward. While Lewis hadn't performed live for a few years, the shutdown offered an opportunity for him to share his craft with a wider audience. Lewis began to offer live streaming concerts from his condominium in downtown Chicago on the fourth Saturday of each month and has garnered audiences of up to 600 people from countries as far away as Japan and Australia. "It's about getting lost in the music and, you know, you're just sort of in that mode and it doesn't necessarily matter that the audience is in the room," Lewis says. "The audience can be anywhere." Lewis was born in Chicago and began playing piano at the age of 4, following in the footsteps of his sister, whom he envied. He almost gave it up because of the commitment to practice, but eventually he fell in love with playing and branched out to different genres, from jazz to classical to pop. Lewis recognizes the irony in the shutdown of live venues offering opportunities for artists to reach out to and develop new audiences. "I just love the idea of sitting down at the piano and being able to share my music with people who would've never been able to hear it," Lewis says. Marta Aznavoorian is one-third of the wellknown classical trio, The Lincoln Trio, which plays annually at Ravinia and other festivals and venues throughout the country and the world. With the trio's performance schedule being postponed or cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, Aznavoorian, an award-winning classical pianist and music professor at DePaul University, has beefed up her ability to provide private lessons to potential new students. "You can't have musicians flying from across the country if there isn't going to be an audience for them. They won't be able to pay us if there aren't people coming to fill the hall," Aznavoorian says. "So, it was actually a bit interesting to see what musicians were going to do to bring music to people." Aznavoorian reconfigured her website, martaaznavoorian.com, to feature her one-on-one lessons for students and began replacing what would have been time on the road performing with The Lincoln Trio and other projects with teaching. TRIBUTE TO PAUL BURT OF LAKE FOREST A FOND FAREWELL TO A MOST INTERESTING MAN. BY DAVID A. F. SWEET THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
You don’t meet many people who engage both sides of their brain—who write poetry, perform stand-up comedy, create a business, and collect cars all in the same life. Paul Burt was one of them. I knew Paul for about 15 years. Though our daughters were friends at a young age, I think we actually met at one of the extravagant Christmas parties his wife Janet and he hosted. In both their house off of Ridge Road and then on Lake Road in Lake Forest, these were memorable affairs: Carolers greeting you at the doorway, a feast waiting inside, revelers in every room, a Christmas movie playing in their theater-style basement room. In keeping with this theme of oversized celebrations, I remember going to a party for hundreds
in a West Lake Forest warehouse to look over Paul’s collection of cars, motorcycles, and more. As Autoweek explained in an article, “The diversity is staggering: One 1977 Smith Mini biplane, some assembly required. Five classic boats. Fifteen Corvettes in various stages of restoration. No, make that 14 Corvettes and one 1978 Corvette Caballista. A Caballista!” At times years would pass before we’d see each other, but whenever I wrote a book, he immediately reached out. No one bought more books from me to give to his clients in the human resources benefits business than Paul. Our last meeting took place at Dunkin’ Donuts in Lake Forest this past October, when Paul wanted me to take a look at a manuscript of poetry he had written called Virgo After Cancer. One poem dealt with his daughter Sophia, who was diagnosed with heart disease only 30 days after she was born. She had open-heart surgery at age 6. He was going to
self-publish the book and give all of the proceeds to fight cancer. We chatted that morning for perhaps an hour. He loved to share stories about being a comedian in New York in his 20s. At Dunkin’, he told me how had offended Jackie Mason in a deli with one of his jokes. Before our final meeting there, I had no idea he had been battling Stage 4 cancer. He had gained weight since the worst of it, so to me, he looked almost the way he always had. He talked openly about his faith, which I admired greatly. With others, he had noted how it was possible to beat the devil with faith and prayer. Earlier this year, Paul invited me to a gathering to chat about my most recent book. We settled on a date, but then he never responded to my last e-mail to him. Obviously, the scourge of cancer was taking him away from the Earth for good. He died on July 7 at 59.
Though I didn’t know Paul nearly as well as most, I know his life left a mark on so many. My prayers go out to his loving family. David A. F. Sweet is the founding executive editor of The North Shore Weekend.

Paul J. Burt, 59, of Lake Forest, lost his long battle with cancer on July 7. He died comfortably and peacefully, surrounded by his loving wife and four children. Born September 5, 1960 in Philadelphia, Paul worked in New York City in the 1980s to start his

career in employee benefits and embark in work as a stand-up comic. He then moved to Chicago in 1991 where he developed many successful business ventures in employee benefits, technology, real estate, and automotive interests. He is survived by his father Paul C. Burt of Savannah, Georgia, his mother Clarissa Guinan of Cave Creek, Arizona, and his two sisters Clarissa Burt and Carol Berry, both of Cave Creek.
In 1995, Paul married the love of his life, Janet Deptuch Burt and they were married for almost 25 years. His pride and joy were his four children. He is survived by his daughter Erica Burt of Nashville, Tennessee, who recently delivered Paul’s first grandson, named Ford Paul, on March 8. He is also survived by his son and daughter-in-law Brian Burt (Haley Kenefick Burt) of Austin, Texas, who

are expecting Paul’s second grandson in August. In addition, Paul was survived by his daughter Sophia Burt and son Hudson Burt, who both attend Lake Forest High School. Due to restrictions of COVID-19, on July 25 there will be a private, invitation-only mass at the Church of St. Mary in Lake Forest, followed by a private family interment at the Memorial Gardens at Lake Forest Cemetery. SHOW THEM THE MONEY IN A CHANGING WORLD, FINANCIAL LITERACY EDUCATION IS BECOMING AN INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT OFFERING FOR SCHOOLS, EVEN FOR STUDENTS AS YOUNG AS FIRST GRADE. BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
If the recent pandemic has shown us anything in our culture, it’s the cracks that exist in the socalled financial safety nets that are supposed to catch us when we fall. Numerous surveys show that many Americans live paycheck to paycheck, have little saved for retirement, and lack fundamental financial knowledge. Add a global crises and unemployment and it’s a recipe for disaster. While there’s little we can do to quick-educate the general population, hope lies in the future. Illinois is one of 22 states that don't require high school students to take a personal finance-related class, however the University of Chicago is doing something about that. In early 2019, the university launched finEDge, a high school curriculum that is now being used in Illinois and nine other states. Developed by The Magnetar Capital UChicago Financial Education Initiative, a partnership between the UChicago STEM Education program and Evanston-based Magnetar Capital, a hedge fund, the curriculum may hold the key to our collective future. An informal survey of schools on the North Shore found many that are offering financial literacy classes for students as young as elementary school. At Lake Forest Country Day School, even second graders are learning the basics of starting a business from scratch, including developing a company name, logo, tagline, and designing their own storefront. For the schools’ Upper School (grades 5 through 8), math students participate in a stock market game in which they learn about stocks and return on investment. "At Lake Forest Country Day School, we believe understanding the basics of investing and management of finances are invaluable life skills for our students," says Joy Hurd, Head of School. "Espe-
cially at a time when the workings of the economy are changing constantly and dynamically." In addition to offering an AP Economics class, Lake Forest Academy offers two courses—Discrete

New Trier Township High School has offered seminars for parents of incoming freshmen to share ideas about how they can teach their children about financial literacy. On your mark, get set … go. And dream big That’s exactly what a Glencoe sprinter named Peter Goldman did in his grammar school years in the 1950s. His personal coach back then wasn’t just a former Olympic track athlete; she was Betty Robinson, the Betty Robinson, winner of the first Olympic 100-meter dash for women at the 1928 Summer Games in Amsterdam. “You want to know how she was discovered?” Goldman, a Highland Park resident since 1974, asks. “Someone saw her running to catch a train. Someone was amazed how fast she was. “I wanted to go to the Olympics as a sprinter.” Goldman, a New Trier Township High School graduate and a sprinter/broad jumper for the school’s track and field team, nearly qualified to represent Team USA in Tokyo at the Summer Games in 1964—in sailing. And it all happened again as a 19-year-old Tulane University student double majoring in U.S. history and sociology. He and a mate fell short of the goal in the Flying Dutchman class (twoperson racing sailboat) at the Olympic Trials in New Jersey. The former owner of the car care company Nu Finish and a current board of directors’ member of the Chicago-based Gastro-Intestinal Research Foundation (GIRF), Goldman still races sailboats today. The 76-year-old is nimbler on board than most sailors half his age are. But he utters a track word—hurdle (doubling as a noun and a verb)—to describe the challenge GIRF has faced, and cleared steadily and admirably, since the launch of the nonprofit behind the efforts of Dr. Joseph B. Kirsner and Chicago businessmen Martin N. Sandler and Joseph E. Valenti Sr. in 1962. “It has been a hurdle, talking about gastro-intestinal diseases and increasing awareness of digestive illnesses,” Goldman admits. “Who wants to talk about them? It’s not a fun topic, right? But it’s certainly an important one because 70 million people have digestive diseases. What’s been encouraging to all of us at GIRF is the openness we’re seeing and hearing. “The stigma associated with GI illnesses,” he adds, “is no longer widespread. Discussing an inflammatory disease like Crohn’s or any other gastro-intestinal condition has become normal and more acceptable.” GIRF is dedicated to raise funds to support the physicians and scientists at the University of Chicago Digestive Diseases Center in their efforts to provide outstanding care, train future leaders, and perform innovative clinical and laboratory research in order to treat, cure, and prevent digestive diseases. Originally scheduled for May, GIRF’s largest annual fundraiser sets sail at 6 p.m. on July 25, this time as the GI Research Foundation Virtual Ball, featuring performances by The Second City. The pandemic forced GIRF to change the event’s date and format. “We were able to raise some funds before the postponement, and we’re aiming to raise as much money overall this year as we did in recent years,” Goldman says. “That’s our goal and, yes, it’s a big goal.” Goldman and his wife, Carol, got involved in GIRF after a family member was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease decades ago. Carol—the Carol in the North-

brook-based Carol’s Cookies business—offered her time and energy first, joining GIRF’s batch of volunteers in the now-defunct Women’s Division. GIRF’s lead scientific advisor is Dr. David T. Rubin; Drs. Eugene B. Chang and Michael Charlton serve as scientific advisors. “It’s an amazing organization, totally committed to research and finding cures, and it has a fantastic worldwide reputation,” says Goldman, who sold Nu Finish to Energizer Holdings Inc., in 2018. “Some 300 faculty members are involved in cutting-edge research and delivering personalized patient care. That says a lot, right there. That’s huge.” Also enormous: the late Justin “Judd” Goldman’s influence on his son, Peter. Judd was 17 when he suffered a disabling bone disease, one that failed to idle his highly competitive drive. Peter’s father found sailing shortly thereafter, fell madly in love with it, and embraced helms hard for 58 years. Judd Goldman steered a boat in competitions all over the world, including more than 25 Chicago-to-Mackinac races. Each City-of-the-Big-Shoulders-to-Mackinac-Island course covered 333 miles. Rules for disabled sailors were identical to those for able-bodied sailors. Judd dug that homogeneousness on H2O. Peter, his mother, Sliv, and his sister, Judy, established the Judd Goldman Adaptive Sailing Foundation ( JGASF) as a public/ private partnership with the Chicago Park District after Judd’s death in 1990 at a boatyard in Naples, Florida. He was 75. JGASF provides classroom and on-the-water sailing instruction for the physically disabled. “He was very outgoing and friendly, just a couple of the traits that made my father so good at sales,” says Peter Goldman, the father of Jeff and Karen. “Very creative, too, with an excellent business mind. My father was a ‘big idea’ person. “I became a sailor because my dad was one. I first sailed at a camp at a young age and liked the sport right away.” Peter Goldman named his 40-foot Swan sloop “Cookie Monster,” a nod to his wife’s business. Kids get a kick out of the 25-year-old sailboat each time they see its “Cookie Monster” flag. They get hungry, too. “You’d expect me to weigh 500 pounds, considering how often Carol makes her wonderful baked goods at home,” a chuckling Goldman says. The couple’s second date—on a boat, more than 51 years ago— was Carol’s maiden voyage atop Lake Michigan. Peter and Carol, a Michigander, had been set up by a mutual friend. You would have expected Peter

to propose to Carol on a sailboat. He opted instead to pop the question on a descending elevator in Chicago. “A dog was on the elevator with us,” Peter recalls. “I said something corny to Carol, something like, ‘I wonder if that dog is married.’Then I asked Carol to marry me.” Carol said “yes” before the elevator beeped and stopped. Perhaps the dog arf-arfed its approval for the future GIRF backers. Perhaps the pooch stood there, silently and respectfully, focusing on the moment’s details and later relaying them to its doghouse-bound … spouse. “Eventually,” Goldman adds, “I asked Carol’s father for his daughter’s hand in marriage. Her father was a jokester.
