Taco Time A FESTIVAL AND 5K RUN PAYS HOMAGE TO A POPULAR LOCAL TREAT. BY ELIZABETH PORTER THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Calling all taco lovers. If you can’t resist the right combo of heat and garnish, have specific preferences about flour vs. corn tortilla, and/or otherwise consider yourself a taco connoisseur, Highwood has a festival with your name on it. The 4th annual North Shore Taco Fest on Saturday, July 20, and Sunday, July 21—held around the Highwood Metra Station in downtown Highwood—will feature more than 20 vendors serving creative variations of tacos, including local favorites like La Casa de Isaac, The Otherdoor, La Plancha Loca, the Mean Wiener, and Taco Vida. Adults can also enjoy beer, margaritas, and sangria from the bar. (Yes, we know. It doesn’t get better than this.) And yet ... it does. On top of the taco festival, there will also be a 5K and pet-friendly walk on Saturday morning ( June 20) to benefit the North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic, which provides immigration, domestic violence, and legal services to those in need. Since opening four years ago, the clinic has helped 1,500 people become U.S. citizens, stay in their homes, and escape abusive relationships. “We are thrilled and thankful to partner with Celebrate Highwood and be the beneficiary of the Annual Taco Run. It’s time! All those brilliant ideas for new products, services, and creations that the young people in your lives have cooked up now have a place to shine. The first annual Winnetka IDEA Tank for Kids is happening at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17 at the Winnetka Chapel. Entry and registration is open for kids aged 8 to 14 living anywhere in the Chicago area. The free event—created by Lowey Bundy Sichol of Winnetka, author of four books for children on entrepreneurship—gives kids the chance to pitch their bright ideas to an impressive “Shark Tank” panel of business leaders, including executives from the Chicago Blackhawks, Peapod, Merrill Lynch, Valslist.com, and Spynergy Chicago. Participants will have the opportunity to present their ideas to the panel, with cash prizes awarded for the top five ideas, T-shirts for all participants, and a $1,000 grand prize for the brightest idea in the bunch. The event is open to the public and the community is encouraged to attend to cheer everyone on. “Kids can change the world through their ideas,” says Sichol, “and entrepreneurship is the path to do it. I meet so many children who are full of great ideas, but are afraid to put them out there. I tell them, ‘It doesn’t matter what your background is, what language you speak, or the color of your skin. You don’t have to be the smartest kid in the class to have a good idea, but you do have to believe in it and have the courage to give it a try’.” Before writing her books, Sichol, who has an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, had a career in brand management and marketing. She spent years writing case studies for leading business schools on the people and companies that transformed great ideas into successful endeavors. “Every single one of these entrepreneurs had three things in common,” she says. “They had an idea that solved a problem. They were not afraid to fail. And they worked their tails off to take their ideas and make them realities.”

To participate in the Winnetka IDEA Tank, kids need to fill out an online application form at winnetkaideatank.com summarizing their idea, and including some key information. “Be sure to include information on which problem your idea solves and if it’s a product, try to figure out how much would it cost to manufacture. How much would you sell it for? Where would you sell it? And who would your customers be?” says Sichol.
For kids who’d like to work on prototypes of their products, The Winnetka Library has a Maker Space area in the basement, complete with 3D printers, and other tools to help them with their presentation. If all goes well with the first event, Sichol hopes to expand IDEA Tank for Kids to other cities, bringing it back to Chicago every summer. Continued on PG 10

Her book series From an Idea to… from publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, includes books on Nike, Disney, Google, and LEGO. The first two books were published in February. The second two came out on July 9. The nonfiction biographies invite young readers into the world of entrepreneurship by telling the stories of how favorite companies came to be. Each book begins with the founder as a child and brings kids through the journey of starting a company from an idea to becoming one of the biggest brands in the world, Sichol explains: “There are fun facts about the brands we love, easy-to-understand business terms, and I’ve included humor on every page with graphic novel-like black and white illustrations from C. Classical crossover act Well-Strung has got it going on (yes, that’s a reference to the NY-based string quartet’s viral video parody of the Fountains of Wayne hit “Stacy’s Mom”). Consisting of violinists Edmund Bagnell and Chris Marchant, violinist/violist Trevor Wadleigh, and cellist Daniel Shevlin, Well-Strung counts Kristin Chenoweth, opera singer Debra Voigt, Broadway expert Seth Rudetsky, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton, among the celebrity fans of its pop/classical mash-up with vocals. We had the pleasure of speaking with first violinist Edmund Bagnel shortly before WellStrung returned to Ravinia for the second time (Monday, July 15). Edmund, at what age did you first pick up a violin? I was 7 years old. My grandparents bought me a violin from an antique store. It was a full-size violin which is way too big for a 7-year-old. I liked messing around on it, so my parents got me lessons on a violin which was a quarter of the size.
Do you play other instruments? I play a little bit of clarinet and a little bit of piano. But not enough to say that I play either instrument. Violin’s my thing. What can you tell me about the genesis of Well-Strung? It’s been an interesting journey. We started as more of a theatrical thing. We formed in New York City in 2012. We did a short off-Broadway run. We had a very set show at that time. We had a director and our manager and producer, Mark Cortale, who’s still with us. It was funny, we were more of a theatrical piece at that time, so we had monologues and stuff. But people really responded to our music and these arrangements of pop songs that we were doing, and the fact that we

were singing while we were playing. Eventually, the theatrical element gave way and we began operating more as a group.
Did you all know each other before you came together as Well-Strung for the theatrical piece? Yes. I had met Chris (Marchant), the second violinist, previously. I had been aware of Daniel (Shevlin), the cellist. I did not know Trevor Wadleigh, the other violinist/violist in our group. He came on at the last minute. We had someone else who was set to be our violist before our first performance in New York City. A friend of a friend recommended Trevor and he came over. We had our first rehearsal with him basically a week before our first performance. Who came up with the name? The name originated from Chris. It’s a little cheeky. You can take it how you want.
On Under the Covers, Well-Strung’s most recent album, some pop songs are paired up with classical numbers, others aren’t. How is that determined? That’s something we really like to do—to mash-up the pop with the classical at the same time. That’s not something we did immediately. We used to perform a movement of a classical string quartet and then perform a Britney Spears song. But we presented them very much in the same spirit and energy. People responded to that. About two years in was when we did our first pop/ classical mash-up where we brought the two together in one song. I guess the thing is, whether it’s a classical piece or a pop song, it always starts from us liking the music. We never try to force it. In some cases, if a song is good on its own, we’ll just leave it as is. If there’s a great way to combine a pop song with a classical piece, we go for it. There are vocals on some songs, including “Moon River” and Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect,” while others are instrumentals. What’s involved in the decision-making process regarding whether a
song will be sung or an instrumental? With some songs, it’s nice to just leave it alone and let it be instrumental. I guess it depends on what’s in our wheelhouse and how can we best serve the music we’re working with. Since year one, we’ve been playing “I Will Always Love You.” That ’s definitely an instrumental. Well-Strung. It ’s beautiful instrumentally and we just don’t want to go there.
Are you a violinist who sings or a singer who plays violin? At this point it’s hard to say. I’ve been playing the violin since I was 7. I’ve been singing since I was a little kid. In high school, I started training vocally. It’s kind of equal in my brain. I guess I’ve been a violinist the longest. Both have always been a large part of my life and career. It’s kind of hard to separate them.
Do you know if artists Well-Strung has covered, including Lady Gaga, have heard WellStrung’s versions of their songs, and if so, what do they think? A few years ago, Britney Spears heard our version of “Toxic.” She saw a video of us playing it. That was really cool. What can people attending Well-Strung’s

concert at Ravinia expect? They can expect a good time. We’ve got a lot of new arrangements. This is our second year coming back. We’re so thrilled. I love Chicago and that whole area. We’re excited to be back. If someone hasn’t heard us before and will be seeing us for the first time, I would say they’re probably going to be a little surprised. Some people say they’re not sure what to expect going into our concert. They wonder if it’s going to be a stuffy classical thing or a frivolous pop thing. Not to sound boastful or anything, but I think most people walk away thinking, “Pop music is good music and it’s very serious.” There’s a lot to work with if you’re coming from a classical background. People who are coming more for the pop music are surprised at how accessible classical music is. How beautiful and rich the classical history is. For tickets, visit ravinia.org. A player to watch Quick study Duke Olges eager to ace next football level at Northwestern.

Duke Olges sits in a Northwestern University cafeteria, furtively watching people. The last thing on the 6-foot-5, 275-pounder’s mind is food. Olges—a 2019 New Trier High School graduate and future NU football player—is there to start his first assignment for a summer anthropology class. The young man who annoyed and chased quarterbacks on football fields as a massive, speedy defensive lineman the last two autumns now needs field notes as a rookie college student.
Big-time college football coaches didn’t care that Duke hadn’t played football for many years. You don’t see nearly 300-pound football players move around a field the way he does. No wonder coaches saw film of him and were quick to say, ‘We want him.’

Olges stood out in karate circles, too. He was 3, maybe 4, when he was introduced to the discipline. Had he not stuck with it for 12 years, transitioning to football as late as he did might have been too daunting of a task to complete. “Karate, without a doubt, helped me as a football player, had the biggest impact,” says Olges, who also lined up as a tight end in his Trevians career. “It developed my balance, my focus, my coordination. I became physically and mentally tougher because of my karate years. To be an effective defensive lineman you have to be good at hand fighting, and I had years of experience with hand fighting through karate.” A captain for a Class 8A playoff team last fall, Olges finished with 102 tackles, 69 of the solo variety. The disruptive force also recorded five sacks, 15 tackles for loss, 15 quarterback hurries, and four pass deflections. Olges also burned teams from the other side of the ball after lining up in a vacated lefttackle spot, churning for 30- and 40-yard gains on catch-and-run plays against Evanston Township and Niles North high schools, respectively. Olges displayed his impressive speed in NT’s baseball opener against Lane Tech this past spring. The designated hitter/first baseman had drawn a walk before stealing second base, easily, via a headfirst slide. But he suffered a dislocated left shoulder

at the end of the slide and underwent surgery in June. The defensive tackle recruit will sit out the 2019 season at NU—winners of three straight bowl games—as a medical redshirt. “I’m OK with that,” says Olges, the eldest son of Scott and NTHS graduate Mary, a pair who met at the University of Missouri and graduated together as MBA students at the University of Chicago. “It will give me more time to get stronger and be fully ready for D-I football. I’m excited about playing for Pat Fitzgerald, a players’ coach with a winner’s edge and mentality. He cares. Everybody loves Coach Fitz. The program buy-in for me was super easy, and the new football facilities there are amazing.” The size of his freshman class at New Trier stunned him in the fall of 2015. Olges was only a 6-foot, 190-pounder then, one of 1,000 or so fresh faces at the school’s Northfield campus. “Totally overwhelming at first,” he recalls, adding the number of students at the middle school he’d attended was around 200. “There I was, part of a huge cluster of people. It was such a different atmosphere. But I got used to it.” Did he ever. In the classroom. And on the football field. Anybody could see that. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Elizabeth Garlovsky’s passion for the human side of the law, education, and advocacy BY MONICA KASS ROGERS ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
When school board members of Township High School District 113 in Highland Park meet to discuss strategic plans, policies that govern the district, or any of the other initiatives necessary to make the education in the district the best that it can be, Elizabeth Garlovsky is very pleased to facilitate. First elected to the board in 2017, voted in as president in 2018, and again in 2019, Garlovsky, a probate and estate planning attorney and mom of three, is a big believer in public education. She’s especially a champion of the Deerfield and Highland Park High School District.
With two lawyers in one household, there is a lot of negotiating that goes on that we aren’t even aware we are doing
“Education has always been very important to my family,” she says. “My grandfather, Ben Palmer, was an Illinois State Senator and he sponsored legislation that created the Illinois Lottery, which was originally drafted as a vehicle to pay for the educational system in Illinois. I wasn’t interested in serving politically, like he did, but when an opportunity to be on the school board came up, that interested me. My husband and I have had great experiences sending our children through the district. And I wanted to give back to the community.” Garlovsky has always taken education very seriously. Her father, a urologist who now works for the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, and her mother, a longtime real estate agent, always instilled in their children the importance of education in finding the path to be everything they could be. For Garlovsky, who came from a family full of lawyers—not only State Senator Palmer, but one uncle who was an Assistant Public Defender for Cook County, and another who is a

retired Appellate Court Justice—the inspiration to be an attorney was there from a very young age. “I was 12 when I decided I wanted to be a lawyer,” she says. “We talked about law all of the time. And from the start, I was very drawn to the people-driven aspect of the law, the opportunity to advocate for people who couldn’t advocate for themselves.” Initially, Garlovsky wated to go into divorce law in order to help women. “Back then—this would have been the ’80s—there were fewer divorces, but among those that happened in households I knew of, the typical scenario was one in which the wife had committed herself to full-time care of the children in the home, rather than having an outside career. So when the divorce happened, there was a lot of hardship and injustice for those women.” But one of her uncles challenged her to look at additional law branches, before making a final decision. “I realized there were so many types of law I could practice that would be helpful to people in difficult situations,” she says. And so, when a college friend working at the office of the Cook County Public Guardian suggested that Garlovsky was a good match for a job there, she went for it. She started volunteering at the office while still in law school at Loyola University, and ended up working there for two and ½ years—a year and ½ of that as a licensed attorney. W hile emotionally draining and physically taxing, representing and advocating for children who had been abused and neglected by their parents was very rewarding. “I loved the work,” she says. “As an Assistant Public Guardian, I worked very hard advocating for these children. They really mattered to me and I got very attached to them.” Garlovsky moved on to estate

planning and probate law for several law firms, a career that has spanned more than 20 years. “I really like what I do, because it’s so people driven,” she says. “There’s such a big human aspect to dealing with people who are going through difficult times in their lives. Even if they just need to prepare a will or trust, this can be a very trauma provoking process. Maybe they are coming to you because they just lost a family member, or they themselves are ill. In most instances, they are facing mortality. Understanding the psychology behind that and the need to build trust is crucial, because often these clients are telling you something they may never have told anyone else.” Taking the law practice all the way home, Garlovsky is married to an attorney. Her husband, Richard Saldinger, does commercial litigation as a partner with a firm in Chicago. “ With two lawyers in one household, there is a lot of negotiating that goes on that we aren’t even aware we are doing,” Garlovsky laughs. But the two learn a lot from one another. “Sometimes he learns from me how the more human/psychological element can factor into helping him with a case,” she says. “And when there is a case I am dealing with that is procedurally complicated litigation-wise, he can help me sort that out.” Now that her children are almost out of high school, Garlovsky has had more time to lecture and publish articles in the law community. She is proud to have recently been elected as a fellow to the American College of Trusts and Estates Counsel. But in addition to these endeavors, finding time to give back to the community that gave her the educational foundation to start on her path is also a priority. “My mom always instilled in me the belief that I could be anything I wanted to be,” Garlovsky concludes. “She was never able to finish college, so it was important to her that I have the secondary education that I have had. She encouraged me to use my intellect and to work to my fullest potential as an independent, strong woman—a pathway best accessed through education. So having the opportunity to give back to a community by serving as school board president is a privilege for me. The worth is immeasurable.” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
