Taking the Army’s offer of officer candidate school was an easy choice at the time for Michael Duffy. Now a Wilmette resident, then he was a draftee making less than $100 a month as a private. Lieutenants could get nearly $800 a month. A year later, as the young lieutenant stepped off the C130 cargo plane at the massive base in Saigon, Vietnam, the deal didn’t seem quite as sweet. His introduction to Vietnam literally was an introduction to war. As he departed the plane at 2 a.m. on January 31, 1968, Viet Cong bullets were flying in every direction at Saigon’s main military airport. They were flying at him, over him, and past him. He had no weapon or jungle camouflage khakis; only a tan officer’s uniform. The Army lost his duffle bag and all his possessions so he ripped off his uniform, racing for a helicopter escape and bloodied his hand on the tarmac for good measure. It’s a story that could make a good book. Luckily for fans of history, his memoir about that year is a very good book. From Chicago to Vietnam: A Memoir of War was a rich enough narrative that even three years after it was published, Barnes & Noble selected it in May as one of the bookseller’s national “15 Heroic Books for Memorial Day.” Continued on PG 11

NEWS VIETNAM Cont. from PG 1 With Independence Day coming up next week, we thought it was the perfect time to celebrate our own local hero. The book is brimming with virtually hour-by-hour details of the life of a young officer on the edge. A private stuck an Army pamphlet in his hand. It was an introduction to Vietnam’s rich cultural history. The private also suggested Duffy get a rifle as soon as possible. The kid who had grown up a budding artist in Rogers Park had landed in the middle of the first day of the historic Tet Offensive in which 85,000 Vietnamese guerrillas and North Vietnamese army regulars were simultaneously attacking every American installation in Vietnam. The country, and every place in it, was in a chaotic firefight. That day is like yesterday to him. Today, Duffy lives in Wilmette, where he also runs his own successful men’s clothing distributorship. What he brought forward with him though the 51 years from 1968 to now is every intact memory of that year. For those who might wonder how 50-year-old memories can be reconstructed precisely for historical credibility, Duffy didn’t have to do that. “I’ve been writing this book for 30 years, and I figured it was about time to publish it,” he says. “I wrote the entire book—320 pages—in longhand. I have this stack of pages a foot high. There are loose leafs and notes all piled up. Then eventually, I got a word processor and transcribed it.” As a young artillery officer, Duffy eventually settled

into Firebase Bear Cat, near Binh Son Rubber Plantation Xuan Loc as the executive officer of a 105-mm howitzer battery. He was the boss of Company C, 7th Battalion, 9th Artillery. But as the year progressed, he became more aware of the realities of that war. “When the sun went down, we had our six howitzers ringed with concertina wire. But you took your life in your hands if you went outside at night. It was then I started to realize that I didn’t know if this was winnable. Maybe it had to be negotiated. We had a half million men there; the Australians had 60,000. There were even troops from Korea and Thailand,

plus two million South Vietnamese soldiers. And yet the guerrillas made it unsafe to go outside.” The Tet Offensive had been designed to show that the Viet Cong would never surrender, and no number of troops would make Americans safe there. It took another seven years for that argument to be validated

when Saigon fell. Duffy had long since left for home, though he was offered Captain’s bars in return for a second year managing artillery at a higher level. He said no. “If you talked to any soldier in Vietnam then, they all said they had one goal. Just to go home. That was it. To go home.” The judgment seemed to be vindicated that year when the Viet Cong overran Duffy’s firebase in the old French provincial capital, killing 22 Americans soldiers, including Captain Allen Ross Culpepper. Culpepper won a posthumous Bronze Star, Distinguished Service Cross, and Purple Heart for his heroism that day. The captain’s bars Culpepper wore that day might have been Duffy’s had he stayed. Duffy has spent a year telling his story of war and life growing up in Chicago for library patrons in Wilmette, Glencoe, Lake Forest, and up and down the North Shore. Duffy self-published his book at Inkwater Press, but the recent notoriety and sales have opened other doors. Pemic Books and Volvox Globator, two publishers who saw his book at the Book World Prague 2019 Catalog Show, have now expressed interest in publishing it in the Czech Republic. “To be honest, I always thought the book would be successful, because each of the memories was very vivid when I wrote them,” he says. In what may be the most opulent fundraising event Citadel Theatre has ever seen, the public is cordially invited to The Royal Ball on Saturday, July 13 at a David Adler estate currently being restored by renowned architect Adrian Smith. Scott Phelps, who co-founded Citadel Theatre in Lake Forest with wife Ellen Phelps 17 years ago, says having Nancy and Adrian Smith among its supporters has been a real game changer for the Equity theater company. “We had done fundraising in the past but nothing to this scale,” says Phelps, explaining that early events drew 50 to 75 people while the ones the Smiths have been involved in have had guest lists that pushed 400. “The Smiths have been so loyal and such good patrons of the arts. We are forever grateful for their support, along with all the other subscribers and supporters.” And so, what Phelps and Citadel and the Lake Forest community have next month is a ball. Not a gathering. Not a gala. But a ball, with a capital B. Royal in theme, all meant to “raise the curtain” on not only Citadel’s year ahead but also the progress made so far in the Smith family’s restoration of an iconic 22,000-square-foot mansion. Designed by David Adler in 1930, the estate known as Innisfail II has been home to several prominent Chicago families, including Joseph Cudahy of Sinclair Oil and W. Clement Stone, author, philanthropist, and insurance tycoon. While the mansion was once considered the finest of its kind THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

on the North Shore, it sat in neglect over the last 17 years as it was abandoned by a previous owner. To have Adrian Smith, arguably one of the most renowned architects of the 21st century (he just designed the tallest building in the world in Dubai) take over the restoration of a legendary architect from the previous century is nothing short of poetic. “To me, it was an honor and a privilege to be able to acquire and save this David Adler designed estate home,” says Adrian, who purchased the property two years ago with his Smith Family group (which includes his son, Jason Smith). The greatest challenge for the Smiths was deciding what to keep and what to modify or replace. With four previous owners, modifications to the original architecture were made by other architects, some in the spirit of Adler but others missing the mark completely. “What I have tried to do is respect the architecture of Adler, and make as few changes to his work as possible—all while trying to improve the modifications that were made by successive architects and ripping out the most unacceptable mistakes,” Adrian says. “It is not a finished work. It is a work in progress. There is still much work to do to make it fully useful but we have come a long way.” When guests come to The Royal Ball on July 13, they will get the first look behind the curtain to see the progress that’s been made and the potential that lies ahead. April Graves, a local photographer and chair of next month’s Citadel fundraiser, says she likes to think of the event as a “raising of the curtain” in support of the theater but also the Smith project— another labor of love in the name of art. “As an artist myself, I am very aware of the lack

of funding and attention brought to the arts. THE BOYS ARE BACK HIGHLAND PARK MUSICIANS REUNITE FOR 150TH ANNIVERSARY PARADE. BY ELIZABETH PORTER THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Kindergarteners Adam Hill and Noah Plotkin may have still been learning to read when they met at Ravinia Elementary School in 1990, but they already knew how to rock. Best friends since childhood, their lives took them down separate paths on separate continents. But the same passion for music that bonded these Highland Parkers decades ago will bring them together again next week as they celebrate their hometown’s 150th anniversary. After years without seeing each other, Hill and Plotkin will reunite to accompany Dr. Mark and the Sutures on the last float of the Fourth of July parade. The legendary local band—which has performed for free at block parties, charity events, and community celebrations for over three decades—is an apt closing act for what will be an epic, sesquicentennial celebration of the town. “I never knew that my band would continue to be together for 32 years. To have my son and his childhood best friend Noah also play with us, after so many years, is a coming together so to speak,” says Dr. Mark Nolan Hill, the Highland Park surgeon who heads the popular local band. “The circle is complete.” As a third-generation guitarist, Adam Hill has music in his veins. His grandfather, Bert Hill, was a well-known session jazz guitarist and taught Adam to play at a very young age. Seven-year-old Adam became an honorary member of Dr. Mark and The Sutures, climbing up on stage to rock out to Beatles songs on his miniature guitar—right alongside his father Mark. Dr. Hill and his son have undoubtedly bonded through their music, much like he did with his own father.

“I know that the few times that I performed with my late father it was always particularly special, especially when I would say to him—take it, Dad,” Dr. Hill reflects. “There was only one time when Adam, who was a little boy, and my father and I played together, which was very meaningful.” Adam kept playing with the popular local band until he finished his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at his father’s alma mater, Miami University. From there, he moved across the pond to pursue a master’s degree from the University of Edinburgh and later a Ph.D. from the University of Essex. Today, Adam is a senior lecturer at the University of Derby, and while time and distance prohibit him from playing with Dr. Mark and the Sutures, he’s never stopped playing guitar. Meanwhile, Noah Plotkin’s mother is convinced he’s been jamming out since he was in utero, keeping tempo when she was at a concert a month before he was born. From a young age, Plotkin was mentored by world-class drummers and participated in every school band from middle school through high school. He graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2007 and has collaborated with many notable institutions around the world. Noah Plotkin and Adam Hill as children. EQUINE SALUTE TO VETERANS Tempel Lipizzans will join BraveHearts Therapeutic Riding this weekend for a special performance of classical dressage (or horse ballet) in honor of next week’s July 4th holiday. Based in Northern Illinois, Tempel Farms is one of the few places in the world where rare Lipizzan horses are bred, trained, and perform on the same property. Since 2007, BraveHearts has been nationally recognized for providing equine-assisted services to veterans from northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin, which include riding, ground activities, carriage driving, and gentling wild mustangs. Equine services provide valuable emotional, cognitive, social, and physical benefits to those who have served our country. When you think of a Boy Scout camping trip, images of building fires and pitching tents probably come to mind. But that was just the start of what this trip had to offer. After almost a year of planning, 35 boys and 10 adult chaperones from Winnetka Boy Scout Troop 20 enjoyed a weekend of adventure at Rich Harvest Farms golf and country club last month. The wide array of outdoor activities offered by Rich Harvest Farms made this trip unique. The boys saddled up on horses, practiced their long shot on the driving range, cruised around on paddle boats, hiked through the scenic woods, and reeled in fish near the 8th hole. They also toured the J.A. Air Center at the Aurora Execu-

Bernie’s Book Bank is a nonprofit that distributes quality books to infants, toddlers, and school-aged children around the Chicago area who wouldn’t have access to them otherwise. Believing that reading is the single most important skill for a child to develop, Bernie’s aims

to close the “reading readiness” gap and instill an appreciation of reading in young children living in impoverished areas. In 2019, Bernie’s will serve 360,000 local children, supplying each of them with 12 ageappropriate books. Now, the township hall is a permanent collection site throughout the year, averaging about 100 books donated each month. “This is our fourth book

collection with Bernie’s Book Bank. Opening in June 2016, the Kimpton Journeyman Hotel is the new kid on the (Third Ward) block. career record (for assists, in this case) in the middle of her junior season like Martinez did in the winter of 2017-18. “I like to look ahead at all times, pass the ball quickly, push the action, run up and down the floor,” says the 2019 Loyola Academy graduate and twotime Illinois Basketball Coaches Association allstater. “Playing fast-paced basketball,” the 5-foot-10 point guard adds, “is my favorite kind of basketball.” Martinez continues to look forward this summer, her vision affixed on life as a thriving Division-I student-athlete nearly 300 miles away from Chicago, her hometown. The Loyola Academy girls basketball program leader in career assists (767) and career rebounds (793) can’t wait to suit up as a hustling, bustling Billiken for the Saint Louis University women’s basketball program. SLU, like Loyola Academy, is a Jesuit school. “A whole new chapter for me,” say Martinez, who, in her senior year last winter, averaged 6.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, 7.1 assists, and 3.3 steals per game for a Class 4A sectional semifinalist, a year after posting averages of 9.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 6.8 assists, 2.7 steals, and 2.4 deflections for a sectional finalist. “I’m excited to get started, and I’m especially excited to play with, and against, players with more experience than I have,” adds Martinez, who finished 26 points shy of reaching 1,000 career points at Loyola Academy. “I love thinking about how com-

He had a lot of experience playing basketball at a high level. I trust him. It feels right, what we’re doing during our sessions, and the coaches at Saint Louis are thrilled I’m working with him.” SLU’s Billikens, under seventh-year coach Lisa Stone, went 15-16 (9-7 in the Atlantic 10 Conference) in the 2018-19 season. The team’s top returner will be 5-foot-6 sophomore guard Ciaja Harbison, the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, she paced SLU in average points (14.6), assists (4.5), steals (1.7), and free-throw shooting percentage (.842, 117-for-139) last winter. Martinez intends to take classes at SLU for a portion of the summer and return home in late July, when she’ll resume working regularly on her hoops skills and counting down the days to the start of a promising college career. Majoring in health sciences is a possibility, she says. “I do have some nerves about academics in college, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it,” says Martinez, a fearless athlete who also battled, as an outside hitter, for Loyola Academy volleyball teams and will be forever grateful for the influence her older, basketball-loving sisters (Cecily and Rosie) had on her during her St. Bartholomew School years. Lake Forest veteran and retired Army Colonel Alan Champ reflects on a life of service. BY SHERRY THOMAS ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

One cold, overcast afternoon on what should have been the meteorological first day of summer, Alan Champ was called inside the house after trying to get some mowing in between the raindrops. The 81-year-old Lake Forest resident still does his own lawn and garden work, you see. In fact, he takes pride in it. “That’s what keeps you young—being active and doing things,” he says in our interview. But when it comes to men like retired U.S. Army Colonel, Vietnam War veteran, Agent Orange cancer survivor, Boy Scout leader, and American Legionnaire “Al” Champ, “doing

things” is an understatement. Champ has lived a life of service, giving back to his country, his family, and his community in profound and life-changing ways. Say that in front of him and he might blush a little. However, at this point, he should be used to it. Born April 4, 1938 in Binghamton, New York, Champ grew up during an auspicious time in American history—sandwiched between the end of the Great Depression and the rise of World War II. A dutiful Boy Scout, Eagle Scout, and member of the Order of the Arrow, he was selected to join an American Field Service cultural exchange trip to Berlin in his junior year of high school—an experience that would forever change his view of the world. “American Field Service was an exchange set up by ambulance drivers during World War I with the hope that if we understood each other better, it might prevent future wars. Sadly, it did not. But this was 1955 and you could walk freely from West Berlin to East Germany,” says Champ, explaining that he went straight from high school to West Point. “I was commissioned as a second

lieutenant, went to Airborne and Ranger school, and went on my first assignment to Germany.” He was stationed there for eight years. And in the kind of great American love story that has been lost through the generations, the girl he left behind waited patiently for his return. “I was introduced to Carol through my brother. She was going to Skidmore College right around the time I graduated from West Point,” explains Champ. “She got a job with General Electric and we got married when I came back from Germany.” Carol joined “Al” on every step of his journey from there—including assignments in the U.S., Turkey, Germany, Korea, and the war in Vietnam. “When I came back to the U.S., I earned a master’s degree in education from Rutgers University, and stayed on to lead the ROTC,” he says. “I had a great military career. I spent a year in Vietnam as an advisor to the Vietnamese Airborne Division, and served as an advisor in Korea after the war from January 1972 to February 1973.” One of his most memorable posts was serving as an aide to a four-star general, an assignment that would take him to a NATO headquarters in Izmir, Turkey and to luxury destinations throughout the Mediterranean, including Naples, Italy and Capri. “It was a lifestyle I’d never imagined as an Army officer,” Champ says, explaining that his last duty station assignment to Fort Sheridan is what landed the couple on the North Shore. Those who know Carol and “Al” would say this turn of fate was a gift to our community. “The amazing thing about Al is that he never seeks any personal acclaim or recognition for his actions. He just keeps doing things to help others,” says Gilman Clark, who has worked with Champ at Lake Forest’s American Legion Post 264 for 30 years. “Carol is also well known for her many civic activities. Together, they epitomize the volunteer spirit that makes Lake Forest a special community.” For example, in the late 1 9 8 0 s — e ve n b e f o re Champ retired from the Army—one of the couple’s neighbors recruited him to help start up a new Boy Scout troop for Post 264. “We started Troop 48 of the Boy Scouts of America and went from 10 boys to more than 100,” Champ says, adding

that the troop now includes girls. “It’s a fantastic organization that I’ve been involved with my whole life. I can’t tell you how many letters I’ve received from people about how much they learned through scouting.” Champ’s other duties with the American Legion post include serving on the color guard and rifle squad. And it doesn’t end there. As a graduate of the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener program, Champ also volunteers his time answering questions at the program’s extension office in Grayslake as well as its annual plant sale (often donating dozens of plants from his own garden). “You meet so many nice people, willing to share their gardens,” he says. “Carol and I also do things with the Friends of the Lake Forest Library. We’ve been picking up books for them for 29 years now.” Clark says Post 264 tried to honor the couple’s contributions a few years ago by making them the Grand Marshals of the Lake Forest Day parade—a gesture that fell flat when the convertible that was transporting the couple broke down one block into the parade. The couple graciously stepped out and walked the rest of the route, without complaint, smiling the whole way. After all that Champ has seen and endured in his life, he doesn’t need a parade to know that his service is valued. “I get so much satisfaction out of somebody coming to me and saying ‘you helped me’,” says Champ. “A couple of the Scouts I have mentioned have gone on to West Point and come out to be Army officers. That I’ve made a positive impact on others’ lives is the greatest reward of all.” Next Wednesday, as our nation honors its day of independence, Champ will be among the early risers. He and fellow veterans will be putting out American flags throughout Lake Forest at 6 a.m. before transitioning to the next duty of the day—leading the Lake Bluff Fourth of July parade with the colors he and so many put their lives on the line to defend.
