PURSUIT OF PURPOSE GLENCOE CHURCH LEADERS LEAD RALLY IN A SHOW OF PEACE AND SOLIDARITY. BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

The world was crying in the wake of George Floyd’s death earlier this month. So the Rev. Wayne A. Gary came up with a plan to stem the sorrow at a local level, steering a team of church leaders en route to the formation of an ecumenical Rally for Justice car caravan in Glencoe on June 7. “I wanted to do something in Glencoe for the people of Glencoe,” says Gary, the pastor at St. Paul Af rican Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Glencoe since early 2018 and a Glencoe Clergy Association leader. “People were asking for equality, asking for justice. Our clergy group wanted to give Glencoe an opportunity to participate safely and peacefully, and to show solidarity. “We believe in our God, and our God tells us to stand for justice.” Driving for it fueled a crew of villagers grappling with a combination of sadness, anger, confusion, and exasperation amid the swirling uncertainties of the pandemic and a wobbly economy. A line of 400-plus cars slithered past each of Glencoe’s eight houses of worship and around downtown Glencoe. The afternoon caravan started east of the train tracks at North Park Avenue and ended at North Shore Congregation Israel (NSCI) at 1185 Sheridan Road. Drivers parked cars at NSCI. A moving program—speeches, reflections, prayers, songs—ensued. Horn honks served nicely, and emphatically, as resounding support for rallying cries and piercing rounds of applause. Rocki Hunter, a New Trier Township High School graduate, talked about growing up Black in Glencoe, 99 percent white then and now. She suggested ways to chip, chip, chip away at systemic injustice: educate (“Research

Black history,” she implored); donate (“Support causes”); and speak up (“Talk to your children and others about racism, and report unfair and unjust treatment”).

Gary cited Proverbs 29:2 to the drivers in NSCI’s parking lot. “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice,” the 51-year-old began. “But when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” People mourn. “Not Black people,” Gary said on June 7, noting Scripture’s lack of descriptor. “Not white people. Not Asian people. Not Latin people.” People. Simply people. “We’re all mourning,” Gary, weeks later, says. “We hope the outcry stops. We’re healing. I believe change is coming; it’s on the horizon. I can’t see the manifestation of it now, but I can pray for it. I truly believe we’re moving in the right direction. “Change begins with the individual,” he adds. “In order for a culture to change for the better, the individual has to change first. There’s your starting point.” Also at the Rally for Justice, Gary announced the Glencoe Clergy Association’s commitments to help move toward systemic change: enter into an immediate process of anti-racism work in each congregational community; engage

elected officials and civic leaders in an ongoing and honest discussion on historical and current institutional failures, with the expectation of achieving meaningful change and equal treatment on a systemic level for the Af ricanAmerican community in Glencoe; push for voter registration and get people out to vote in November; and redouble efforts to strengthen the bonds between community congregations through programs, gatherings, actions, and meaningful dialogue. “That great song ‘We Shall Overcome’, the song sung often more than 50 years ago during the civil rights movement, contains two words—‘some day,’ ” says Gary, who served a parish in his native Detroit for 21 years before answering the call to St. Paul AME. “When will that some day come? We’re still asking that question. Yes, the civil rights movement led to some victories. We’re working to achieve some more today. Reality has pain, but it also has promise and potential. “What we need to remember, what we need to recognize, is the greatest commandment we have is the one that can guide us to equality and systemic change,” the pastor continues. “And that commandment is this: Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” St. Paul AME Church was founded in 1884 by the Rev. Homer F. Wilson, a successful businessman and the first Black homeowner to settle in Glencoe. It’s the second-oldest church in Glencoe. It believes in Jesus Christ and remains convinced of the central truths of Christ’s kingship and the centrality of the Gospel. Its clergy and parishioners organized peaceful gatherings in Glencoe following racerelated tragedies in 2013 (the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida) and in 2015 (the mass shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, in which nine Black churchgoers were killed at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church).

“We’re a family, communal church,” Gary says. “Af rican-Americans, some Caucasians and members of other races worship here. We believe we are a body of believers. We’re here together. “We are in pursuit of purpose.”

encounter, tear your clothes on thorns, twist your ankle on a loose rock, and still never see a wild Bald Eagle. You’d go to rugged places anyway. Eagles aren’t the only reason. When you’re in the wilderness, you’re back where you came from. Gives you a good feeling. But the North Shore is also where you came from. It gives you a good feeling, too. And sometimes it gives you a rare and unexpected sighting. Like that big bad bald eagle soaring above your hometown. Well, it’s a free country. Why shouldn’t this bird be here? Especially this bird. They say the Potawatomi Indians called Elkhart Lake “Me-shay-way-o-deh-ni-bis” (or Great Heart Lake) after its distinct shape, which resembles an elk’s heart. Scooped out by ancient glaciers in the Kettle Moraine State Forest, the resort town’s 292acre spring-fed lake stretches four miles around, with natural springs and a sandy bottom that turn its waters to an intense level of blue reminiscent of the French Riviera. “This makes our lake one of the prized possessions of our community,” explains Kathleen Eickhoff, Executive Director of Elkhart Lake Tourism, adding that the village is in the second phase of its reopening after the COVID-19 pandemic. “You can spend the day relaxing on the sandy beach fronts of our lakeside resorts or rent watersports equipment and paddle the area for a great day of exploration.” Since the Gilded Age of 1886, fashionable Chicagoans (and a few mobsters, we are told) have been packing their steamer trunks and taking the railways north (the old train depot is still there) to this little respite away from the heat of the city. One of the first resorts to serve this affluent clientele, the Osthoff Hotel remains a cornerstone of the resort village today and an iconic part of a culture that says visitors are not “tourists,” but “resorters.” Siebkens Resort followed in 1916 and is also going strong and evolving to meet the discriminating tastes of its guests. Another popular mainstay, Victorian Village, was recently purchased and renovated to become The Shore Club. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Those three resorts, along with luxury bed and breakfast hotels and multiple vacation rentals, creating a stately ambiance around the lake that’s evocative of another time. On weekends, the village is filled with a variety of outdoor markets and other events that bring locals and “resorters” together. While most resorts have their own fine and casual dining options, the downtown restaurant scene never disappoints with locally-sourced cuisine that will satisfy even the most devoted foodie—especially this time of year when al fresco dining is not only at its peak but is considered by experts to be the safest way to enjoy a night out. Eickhoff says restaurants are currently open for indoor dining at 50 percent capacity with social distancing, but that the abundance of outdoor dining options makes Elkhart Lake even more attractive for those who want to get away from it all. “Thankfully many of our restaurants offer outdoor dining which allows for a very comfortable open-air dining experience, many of which have lake views,” she explains. “Our businesses also have capacity limits for shopping, offer social distancing directions upon entering, encourage mask wearing, and ask for patience as we work through these challenging times.” Also open for business is Elkhart Lake’s legendary Road America, a rolling four-mile track that became famous in the early 1950s as the Monte Carlo of the Midwest—attracting gentlemen racecar drivers with exotic European automobiles. “Referred to as the ‘National Park of Speed’ Road America’s 640 acres of beautiful park-like setting provides ample space for social distancing,” says Eickhoff, explaining that the 2020 season is already off to a fabulous start. “The Road America Team

is taking great care to provide a safe atmosphere for drivers, crews, media, and fans. They are using contactless ticketing and protective shields where customer contact is needed. Extra sanitation measures are also being taken with mask wearing and social distancing encouraged.” She also encourages “resorters” to venture out to the spectacular forests and natural wonders that are part of the quintessential Elkhart Lake experience. “Hiking is a great way to experience the outdoors in and around Elkhart Lake. There are a number of shorter Ice Age Trail heads in Elkhart Lake as well as longer more challenging loops in the Kettle Moraine State Forest,” Eickhoff adds. “If fishing is your passion, Jay’s Guide Service has experience and gear you’ll need to enjoy a day on the lake. Jay knows the hot spots on Elkhart Lake and will assist you in reeling in bluegill, muskie, small and largemouth bass, and walleye.” While the village is very walkable, bike rentals are available through the Osthoff Resort and The Shore Club. Eickhoff also recommends that you check out the live music scene in Elkhart Lake, always vibrant and also reopening for the summer. “Check out the Tiki Bar or the Lake Deck for live outdoor music every weekend Memorial Day through Labor Day,” she suggests. Whatever it is that you decide to add to your Elkhart Lake itinerary, the most important thing is to take a deep breath and look around. Not only is this resort village a short drive away, but it’s open and ready to provide all the post-pandemic pampering you and your family require. There’s a reason that travelers have been making the trek up there for more than a century, but you won’t really “get it” until you arrive. Let’s just say those impossibly blue waters aren’t the only thing there that’s magical.

THE LICORICE PROJECT EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT REACHES NEW HEIGHTS—IN ORIGINALITY AS WILMETTE BOY SCOUT WILL GUTRICH PREPARES TO PROVIDE USEFUL SHIRTS TO BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Boy Scout Will Gutrich could have proposed to build a footbridge at a park for his Eagle Scout Service Project last October. Or a shaded pavilion for a school playground. The Wilmette Troop 3 member also could have mulled clearing and mulching a trail along a forest preserve. Gutrich, 14 years old and a New Trier Township High School freshman at the time, instead came up with an Eagle project that made adults— moments after hearing about it—smile hard and cry small lakes. The only child of breast cancer survivor and lifelong Wilmette resident Sheila Gutrich plans to sew post-mastectomy shirts for local survivors and then donate them to The Licorice Project for his 2020 Eagle project. So different, sew thoughtful. The Licorice Project is a welcoming community for breast cancer patients and survivors. It’s dedicated to empowering and embracing women during every stage of the breast cancer journey. “My son was looking on a website one day and noticed a mastectomy shirt cost $85,” says Sheila, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2017 and, post-surgery, wore the adaptive piece of clothing featuring a shirt pocket doubling as a Velcro-closing pouch for a drain holder. “He looked at me and told me, ‘Mom, I can make those.’ ” One slight hurdle: Will Gutrich knows as much about sewing as a grizzled football coach knows about the Triple Peel maneuver in croquet. But the Eagle Scout candidate plans to soar above that obstacle in August by taking a crash course in sewing— taught by owner Karen Graham—at Sew on Central in Evanston. Among Gutrich’s other stitch partners in the project is stepsister Madeleine Berger-Holzman, a fashion designer from Boulder, Colorado. All shirt patterns (sizes medium and large) should be cut out by August, with distribution set to begin in September. The bulk of the beneficiaries will start wearing the mastectomy shirts in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Used ones will get washed and land in the hands of the good folks at The Licorice Project. “Three years ago my mom wore the shirts,” Will, now 15 and a rising sophomore at NTHS, says. “I thought of her when I thought about my proposed Eagle project. My mom has been a major influence in my life. She’s caring, honest, expressive, always

there to look after me. She taught me to be kind. And she’s a very nice person in general.” Gutrich’s path to getting an Eagle project approved began with a rejection. He originally wanted to make receptacles for doggie do-do and deploy them at various spots in Wilmette. His Troop Master swatted that idea, prompting Gutrich’s sweet pivot to providing useful threads to cancer survivors and thrivers and The Licorice Project (TLP), based in Wilmette and launched by sisters Katie Clarke and Kendra Olvany in 2012.

Clarke received her diagnosis in 2011 at age 45, gulped hard, and crushed chemo and months of Herceptin treatments. Older sis Olvany dubs herself a “quarterback” and “cheerleader,” helping TLP breast cancer patients eingineer their drives to recovery and rah-rah-ing for them until her voice gallops to full-blown hoarseness. There must be a fun story behind the “Licorice” in The Licorice Project. There is. The sisters hit the pavement for a breast cancer awareness walk in San Diego years before Clark’s diagnosis. Walkers received small treats from supporters along sidewalks. Kendra and Katie then handed out licorice at a Chicago walk the following year. The candy stuck to teeth, temporarily, but the dissemination of the goodies became a lasting tradition. Gutrich made his pitch to a Boy Scouts c o u n c i l member at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Wilmette last fall.

I thought of my mom when I thought about my proposed Eagle project.

The council member’s occupation? A doctor, no kidding. “He told me, ‘I like your project; it’s unique,’ ” Gutrich recalls. The doc then delivered the good news to the teen, green-lighting a service endeavor that’ll morph Boy Scout Will Gutrich into Eagle Scout Will Gutrich upon completion. Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank in the Boy Scouts of America program. And attaining it at the age of 15 is akin to graduating from high school after a little more than two years; Gutrich had amassed merit badges at a dizzying, ride-at-Six-FlagsGreat-America pace since the age of 10. Earning a minimum of 21 merit badges is a requirement for Eagle Scout. “Sewing isn’t a merit badge, but maybe it should be, right?” says Sheila, who, since her diagnosis, has befriended and emboldened nine breast cancer survivors, including four related to Wilmette Troop 3 Boy Scouts. “I asked Will about the presentation as soon as he got home. All he said was a simple, ‘It went fine.’ That was it. You know, a teenager’s reaction. Will’s a joy. He’s just a really good boy, a boy who essentially has had a sick mother since he was 11. He’s into robotics and water polo in addition to all the time he devotes to Boy Scouts, and he plays the trombone for a couple of bands at New Trier. “My son is a rock star.” Another one of Will’s inspiring “band” mates is his stepfather, architect Stuart Berger. “He’s helped me with a lot of things,” says Gutrich, whose first water polo season at NTHS was reduced to a few practices and an intrasquad scrimmage because of the pandemic. “I’m a better cook because of him. He’s taught me how to be a better musician, how to think smarter.” Gutrich likes to bike in the summertime, sometimes 10 miles a day, and play video games with his friends. Normal stuff.
