A few years ago, at the start of Camp “I Am Me”—a weeklong getaway for children and young adults who have been affected by burn-related injuries—a 12-yearold boy approached an 8-year-old girl.

The girl had suffered severe burns to her arms, chest, and head in a house fire.

A bandana adorned most of her head, the large handkerchief hiding disfigurements and covering barren patches.

“Hey, you don’t have to wear that bandana here,” the boy said. “We all have scars.”

rector of Mount Prospect-based Illinois Fire Safety Alliance (IFSA), the nonprofit that hosts the annual gathering at YMCA Camp Duncan in Ingleside. The 31st edition started last weekend and ends on June 25.

“That scene, that girl’s appearance at the dance—that’s what our camp is all about,” Zaleski says. “It’s about feeling normal in public again. You could see the confidence she had gained since the check-in day. You also could tell she was no longer worried about what others might think of her.

“Our camp is truly a unique program that allows children who had been burned by scalding water, chemicals, or electricity to have a camping experience in a judgmentfree environment with others who had endured similar experiences.”

Nearly 50 signed up for the camp this year. They hail from all over Illinois, with a few calling Wisconsin and Indiana home.

Camp “I Am Me” is cost-free, thanks to the generosity of individuals, groups, businesses, and fire departments. Families of the burn victims were made aware of the camp via the coordinated efforts of the IFSA, hospital burn units, the State Fire Marshal’s Office, and fire departments across the state.

The camp features a wide array of activities and skill periods, as well as specialized sessions that deal with specific needs of burn survivors. They horseback ride, swim, and shoot arrows at a target. They journal. They exit therapy sessions with Alps-high selfesteems. About 25 percent of this year’s camp counselors, Zaleski notes, are former “I Am Me” campers.

Another longtime camp volunteer, Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Ray Larson, spearheads the popular Fun Fair on the Wednesday of each Camp “I Am Me.” The fair features music, games, rides, and attractions on the day when the camp-

ers also get to ride along in a parade of fire engines and other emergency vehicles. The procession allows the burn victims to reunite with EMTs and other medical personnel under less traumatic conditions.

“The camp empowers the kids to go back to their communities and not be so worried about reactions to the sight of their scars,” Larson, a Grayslake resident, says. “They’re no longer ashamed, no longer embarrassed.

What I love about the camp is how it makes each camper realize, ‘I’m not alone.’

But the giving doesn’t stop there.

“The kids,” Larson says, “like to hand out some of the items to their siblings and friends at home. It’s just … amazing.”

Check-in day always moves Zaleski. Its setting is a lengthy driveway, with music blaring and people—young and old—dancing.

“Campers arrive, they recognize volunteers from previous camps, and they start screaming joyful screams,” Zaleski. “Lots of hugs, lots of happy tears.”

“Talking,” he adds, “is one of the most important aspects of the healing process.”

“They discover that,” he adds, “by baring their scars and talking about their injuries with counselors and each other.”

Each camper receives a 30-gallon leaf bag stuffed with toys, games, coloring books, and stuffed animals. If a volunteer notices a bag hadn’t been filled to the brim, they jam more goodies into it in no time.

Larson has been on the receiving end of countless embraces during his two decades as a volunteer. But nothing melts him more than a simple, heartfelt expression does.

“Seeing a child return a smile, on the first day of camp … that gets me every time, because it’s meaningful,” Larson says. “We’re not even wearing shirts that identify where

Many people live with the disease, but no one really wants to acknowledge or accept it. Often treatment is delayed or denied because of how it is viewed by society. Little by little the stigma surrounding mental illness is changing; however until that stigma is broken animals can help to

It is incredible what the love of an animal can do for the mental and physical well-being of anyone but the impact seems to increase exponentially for children and young adults. Created to honor the memory of Patrick Roemer, a Lake Forest teen who lived with anxiety and depression for most of his life, Paws for Patrick connects emotional support animals (ESAs) and therapy dogs with people living with mental illness.

Magdelene (Mags) Roemer, Patrick’s sister and a rising senior at Woodlands Academy, chairs the Paws for Patrick junior board. “I like to think of our organization as three-tiered,” Roemer says. One of the organization’s main missions is to facilitate the acquisition of ESAs by first sourcing and providing animals and then offering training, education, and letters of certification. “The goal is to not only lessen the financial burden but also to make the process easier,” she explains.

Paws for Patrick also provides opportunities for young people to interact with therapy dogs in group settings and individual sessions as well as in schools, youth groups, and events. It currently has a team of 20 dogs and their handlers who have multiple visits each week. A third integral part of the Paws for Patrick vision is to break the stigma of mental illness.

As chair, Roemer hopes to advance the organization’s mission by connecting with a younger audience. “We have received interest from about 150 youth volunteers, 15 of whom make up the executive junior board.”

The board organizes various events to spread awareness about the organization’s mission. A year and a half ago, in May, National Mental Health Awareness month, Paws for Patrick kicked off the “Turn Our Towns Green” campaign in eight communities including several North Shore communities and schools. Lime green—the color representing mental health—ribbons were tied around trees, yard signs were placed in yards and on city property, and community board signs were displayed.

Woodlands invited its students to tie green ribbons around the trees on campus during their lunch period. The signs and ribbons remained throughout the month.

“For this year’s May initiative, we had over 20 communities participating, including all of the North Shore towns, as well as some national universities and colleges including Northwestern, University of Iowa, and DePauw. We hope to eventually ‘Turn

Next on the horizon for Paws for Patrick is the second annual Family Fun & Awareness Fair. This free event on September 11 at the Lake Forest Recreation Center grounds is open to all ages. The event features a DJ and Emcee as well as games hosted by the Junior Board, food trucks, therapy dogs, and booths from animal shelters and mental health organizations.

Your Guide to Epic Walks on the North Shore.

After a busy, stressful day, I love to get outdoors and take a long walk! We are so lucky to live in an area with so much natural beauty and so many fabulous walking trails. Here are a few of my favorites.

Evanston from Clark Street Beach to Clark Square Park and back Approximately 2.8 miles, Amenities, year-round public bathrooms, and many paved paths. Beautiful lake and Chicago skyline views. This walk is wonderful yearround! I have seen paddle boarders in February! Hug the lake as much as possible for the best views. If you like beautiful homes, there are plenty to see here!

Glencoe Chicago Botanic Gardens perimeter Start in the parking lot and walk west along the service vehicle road all the way around the outer perimeter, approximately 2.5 miles, Word of warning, if you are not a member, you will need to pay to park. Amenities, year-round bathrooms, gorgeous natural views, and wildlife, Great Blue Herons, turtles, and more! If you still have energy when you are done, walk through the gardens–it’s worth the crowds!

Highland Park, Ravinia to Rosewood Beach Park near the Ravinia Train Station and walk east along Roger Williams to the Lake. Take the giant staircase down to the beach, then walk along the boardwalk and back up the inclined path just south of the beach parking lot looping back to where you started. Approximately 2 miles. Amenities, beautiful lake views and great leg workout walking back up the hill! Seasonal bathrooms. Stop at Sally’s Nuts on your way back for a snack! Just a heads up that during the summer season, you will need a Highland Park beach pass to make this walk!

Fort Sheridan Go to the main entrance and head east to Gilgare Lane which leads to the forest preserve parking lot.

Park and walk on the paved path down to the beach and then back up the hill on the unpaved path to the north of the beach. Follow the paths (some paved, some not) and walk along the lake at the top of the hill as far as you can, then walk west over the bridge, past the cemetery, and loop around across the old airfield and back to the parking lot, approximately 2.2 miles. Amenities, bathrooms, great leg workout walking back down the hill, beautiful lake views, cool bridges and ravines, lots of history, birds, and more. Word of warning, this can get very muddy when there has been a lot of rain.

The Chicago Botanic Garden is a 385-acre living plant museum featuring 28 distinct gardens and four natural areas. Over our 40 years living on the North Shore, we have visited the Botanic Garden countless times to celebrate Mother’s Day, take classes in garden design, attend kids day camps, enjoy summer concerts, or take a simple stroll through the beautiful garden paths.

English Walled Garden One of our favorite gardens at the Chicago Botanic Garden is the English Walled Garden. Each of the six unique garden rooms evoke a different mood, featuring elements of English garden design through the centuries.

Try the Cottage Garden—overflowing with fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers—for a sense of playfulness (Beatrix Potter, anyone?); or the wisteria-covered Pergola Garden—with flowers and foliage in cool blues, purples, and silver—for a sense of romance (Jane Austen, anyone?)

In designing the garden, the intent was to present a typical period-style English country garden that would evoke as many of the senses as possible.

The Japanese Garden This 17-acre lakeside garden includes three islands. Only two—Seifuto (Island of Clear, Pure Breezes) and Keiunto (Island of the Auspicious Cloud)—are open to the public.

Across the lake, the inaccessible island Horaijima (Island of Everlasting Happiness) is symbolic of paradise—in sight yet elusive.

The Rose Garden When the roses are in bloom—more than 5,000 of them— it’s hard to get beyond the shimmers of color and scent, and the everything-is-coming-up-roses metaphor comes to life. One of the best times to drop by is in the morning, when the roses are the most fragrant. Find a bench in the shady cedar arbor, which is surrounded by climbing roses, flowering clematis, and a bubbling fountain in the shape of a Tudor rose—you’ll have the best seat in the house.

Lightscape Our favorite event at the Chicago Botanic Gardens!

The enchanting, after-dark, illuminated trail includes a path filled with favorite art installations along with many features to surprise and delight the senses. Every year we look forward to the glow of thousands of twinkling lights as we walk through the Winter Cathedral.

Orchid Show Another fantastic event is the annual Orchid Show, which fills the Garden’s indoor galleries with installations featuring more than 10,000 orchid blooms.

TINY REFRIGERATOR PICKLES

Coming upon piles of cute and tiny pickling cucumbers at the local supermarket, I had to bring some home to pickle! Because my family likes a crisper pickle, we cool the brine, pour it over the pickles, seal the jars, and refrigerate. We’ve included tiny, dried red peppers in our pickles for a bit more flavor, but you can omit those for a milder result.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 lbs. small cucumber pickles

METHOD

• 2 cups apple cider vinegar

Place jars, lids, and rings in dishwasher; run through cycle to sterilize. Place sterilized jars on clean towel to finish drying. Wash and dry the cucumbers. Trim off and discard the blossom end of each cucumber. Place one garlic clove, one dried pepper, and one dill sprig in each jar. Pack the cukes into the jars, leaving ½-inch head space. In a small sauce pan over high heat, bring vinegar, water,

sugar, salt, and mustard seeds to a boil. Stir to dissolve salt and sugar. Cool brine to room temperature. Pour enough brine over pickles to fill each jar to within half inch of the top of the jar. Add as many of the remaining mustard seeds to the jars as you can. Discard any remaining brine. Seal jars. Place in refrigerator. Pickles are ready to eat within one day.

FOURTH RIGHT COUNT ON RICK AMOS AND FRIENDS TO THROW YET ANOTHER SOUND LAKE FOREST FESTIVAL & FIREWORKS SHOW ON THE 4TH OF JULY.

You want Lake Forest Festival & Fireworks stories?

Event Coordinator Rick Amos has them— plenty of them.

There was the year when the headliner and his daughter/backup singer got into an argument on stage. She threw her microphone down and stomped off.

“I got a call from the police at around 2:30 in the morning, telling me they’d found the daughter, alone, on a bench in downtown Lake Forest,” Amos recalls. “They wanted to know if I knew how to get a hold of her father.

“I called her father, who was on his way to the airport to catch a flight for his next concert, in California. He told me, ‘She knows how to reach me.’”

A power outage halted headliner Kenny Loggins’s set on another 4th of July.

“That was unfortunate,” Amos says.

But one of Amos’s favorite recollections of the Festival & Fireworks—organized by the Friends of Lake Forest Parks and Recreation Foundation, since 2005—didn’t involve a performer.

It unfolded last summer, when about a third of the attendees traveled to Deerpath Community Park from communities other than Lake Forest and Lake Bluff. Amos, sitting among family members and a small army of friends, noticed a woman sitting alone.

“I found out she lives on Chicago’s South Side,” says the 58-year-old Amos, who moved from Orange County, California, to Lake Forest with his family in 2001. “She told me she wanted to enjoy the 4th in a fun, safe atmosphere. I then invited her to join us, and she commented how welcomed she’d felt in our city. I hope she comes back.

“There’s a perception out there that Lake Forest people are snooty,” he continues.

“Well, we’re not. We’re friendly and family-oriented and fun-loving, and our Festival and Fireworks event gives us the opportunity to represent qualities like those.”

This year’s event starts July 4 at 5 p.m. and lasts until 10 p.m. at a 10-acre tract at Deerpath Community Park.

The entertainment features Tommy DeCarlo, singer of the rock band Boston, with special guest Rudy Cardenas of American Idol. Festival goers—Amos expects between 8,000-10,000—will get to ooh and aah during a 20-minute fireworks display, inhale tequila tacos, and hear the classic hits of Boston and Journey.

“The first album I ever bought was Boston’s first album,” Amos says. “I still have it.”

Slides and bouncy houses will be deployed for the kids. Don’t be surprised if a tossed football collides with a flying Frisbee near strewn clusters of folks, who had either bought food and drinks from on-site vendors or packed coolers at home.

“It’ll seem Ravinia-like to many, but it will also feel like you’re in a carnival setting,” Amos says, adding the event should draw children as young as 5 and adults as grand as 95.

What inspired Amos to create the inaugural Festival & Fireworks 17 years ago was his collection of childhood 4th of July memories

I wanted Lake Forest’s 4th of July activities and offerings to generate as many enjoyable moments as I’d experienced in my youth.

“My friends and I would ride our bikes to the county fairgrounds,” Amos says. “The big attraction, in addition to the fireworks, was a demolition derby. I remember all the fun I had during the day and at night.

“I wanted Lake Forest’s 4th of July activities and offerings to generate as many enjoyable moments as I’d experienced in my youth.”

Amos competed in football, basketball, track and field, and tennis at Sidney High School, home of the Yellow Jackets. But he played only football—as a free safety— at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he earned a B.S. in business administration.

“I was a pretty active kid in high school,” Amos says. “In college I played football for three seasons before injuring my neck. I chose not to suit up for football in my senior year; I wasn’t going to be an NFL player.”

Amos kicked off his post-Miami life by working in sales and marketing for the Xerox Corporation in California. Stints at Boston Scientific (in the medical

device industry) and in boutique investment banking followed. For the past 20 years the cancer survivor and father of three (Kelly, Jordan, and Ashley), with wife Sherry, has served as chairman of Amos Media Company, a diversified special interest media/publishing company.

“When we moved to Lake Forest 20 or so years ago, the plan was to stay for two, maybe three, years,” Amos says.

“Still here.”

And still making a difference, though he’s quick to point out that the Friends of Lake Forest Parks & Recreation Foundation (“The Friends,” for short) is a wonderful organization blessed with dedicated board members and tireless volunteers.

“Believe me,” Amos says, “so many others pitch in to make our Festival and Fireworks— Lake Forest’s biggest community event—the popular and successful event it is every year.

Every summer it’s a thrill for me, for all of us who wear turquoise shirts on the 4th, to hear a festival attendee express appreciation for the work we did to put this event together.

“Plus it’s so refreshing to receive such positive feedback in the world we live in today … a world that’s gotten way too edgy, with too many people pointing fingers at others.”

“The Friends” contingent also organizes the annual Fred Jackson Golf Classic fundraiser at Deerpath Golf Course, a track, by the way, that underwent significant renovations via the backing of the Friends of Lake Forest Parks and Recreation Foundation. The foundation also provided funds for Lake Forest Beach’s first-ever fire and rescue boat.

That annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, staged at Market Square on the Friday after Thanksgiving?

Amos and his fellow Friends ace coldweather events, too.

Amos had 18 reasons to be thankful last year, when the avid golfer played that many holes at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia.

He had never toured the home of the Masters.

But he shot an impressive 40 on the front nine, before settling for a round of 84.

“That had been a dream of mine, getting to play that beautiful course,” Amos says. “It was magical.”

He won’t need clubs or golf balls to trigger tingles at Deerpath Community Park on July 4. All he’ll have to do is look up and view another stellar fireworks finale.
