Since 2018, the North Shore has gone chicken crazy, with big fat hens popping up on real estate billboards and in backyards from Highland Park to Lake Bluff. The trend is not only here to stay but has been further amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. With more people at home to tend the “coop” and an egg shortage in some communities around the nation, backyards are going to the birds. Garnering in excess of 175 million mass media impressions, a chicken-centered campaign from local realtor Baird & Warner when the trend ramped up more than a year ago was designed to communicate that the realty company really “gets” what homebuyers want these days: including that backyard chicken coop. “The whole premise revolved around trends we see in the marketplace, with some of the most fun being vinyl, chicken coops, and yoga rooms,” says Peter Papakyriacou, senior vice president of marketing and communications at Baird & Warner. “It’s all about finding that perfect home for people; that's something an app or technology alone can't do for them. And that's the name of our campaign: 'We get you'." “They certainly get me,” laughs Matt Hendrick, who bought a home in Lake Bluff with his wife, Greer, two years ago partly because the village is one of the few on the North Shore to allow chickens. Deerfield began issuing chicken permits in 2013 and Highland Park got on board last May with an ordinance that allows single family homeowners to set up coops in their backyard. Relocating to the Chicago area from Colorado, Hendrick says the couple narrowed their homebuying search to chicken-friendly communities.

“Greer is into organic, locally-grown, sustainable food, and likes the fact that raising our own chickens will provide our family with fresh eggs,” he says. “Beyond that, we just think chickens are beautiful creatures and they have such sweet demeanors. We believe raising them will be a good experience for us, and for our young children.” That Baird & Warner had enough requests from homeowners interested in raising backyard hens to hang a campaign on it even then, perhaps these home-grown hobby farms are part of our

“new normal.” Jennifer Murtoff, owner of Home to Roost LLC (htrchickens.com), the Chicago area’s leading urban chicken consultant owner, says it's increasingly becoming a lifestyle choice. "Chickens eat the family’s kitchen scraps, as well as bugs and pests in the yard. Chicken waste enriches the soil and their eggs feed the families that care for them,” she says, explaining that many of her chicken-consultation clients are urban and suburban families who view their backyards as ecosystems working in a natural loop. “It all works together.” For homeowners like Hendrick preparing for first-time chicken ownership, the initial learning curve includes questions about what kind of coop to build or purchase, how to feed and maintain the chickens, and which breeds to purchase. To get there, Hendrick read books, visited

websites and talked to chicken owners who had years of experience raising the birds. “You really do learn a lot by talking to others who have chickens,” says Helen Sheyka, who has been raising chickens in Barrington Hills since 1994. To share what she learned over the years and learn from others' experiences, Sheyka began hosting a small chicken club. “We would all get together and bring an egg dish and talk chickens. It really grew fast,” says Sheyka. At last count, the Barrington Chicken Club had more than 100 attendees from around the North Shore and northwest suburbs. Online groups such as the Chicago Chicken Enthusiasts are also helpful forums for information and connection, and Murtoff does house calls or phone calls as part of her business. Some of the most important early decisions backyard chicken owners must make revolve around the coop itself. “There are a lot of readymade ones out there that may look really cute, but turn out to be impractical,” says Nancy Vick, a backyard chicken owner in Evanston. “You need a coop that’s sturdy, well ventilated—but draft free in the winter, and it must be as predator proof as you can make it.” Keeping chickens safe from predators that

normally live in and around urban environments has been the biggest challenge for most backyard chicken owners. Red tailed hawks, raccoons, mink, foxes—even skunks and dogs will attack unprotected chickens. To make the coops easier to maintain, Murtoff—who teaches classes on coop and, chicken selection, and basic chicken care at places such as the Morton Arboretum and the Chicago Botanic Garden—recommends building a coop that has a human-sized door and a chicken run tall enough to stand in without stooping. Selecting bird breeds that do well in Chicago’s cold climate is another important consideration. Konecny says any chickens in the English or American breed categories are good. To get acclimated to having hens before investing in a permanent coop, some chicken owners, such as Vick have signed on with Urban Chicken Rentals, a company that allows you to rent three hens, a coop, feed, and supplies on a month to month basis. “It’s like training wheels for chicken ownership,” says Vick. “I learned so much from the rental that helped me make more informed decisions when I was ready to build a coop and get my own hens.” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

MOMMA STRONG FROM FEEDING THREE BOYS AT HOME IN DEERFIELD TO FEEDING THE HOMELESS IN CHICAGO, MOMMA CHEF KAREN NOCHIMOWSKI SHARES HER LOVE OF PRACTICAL COOKING WITH OTHERS.

Karen Nochimowski of Deerfield was lying in bed at 3 a.m. one morning in June 2018 and an idea popped into her head. Nochimowski, founder of the popular Momma Chef blog with nearly 100,000 followers, wanted to bring the simple recipes she'd been sharing with her followers to a soup kitchen that could feed the homeless. Later that morning, she hopped on to Google to start searching for a location that might be able to host a soup kitchen. She soon stumbled on Congregation KINS, a synagogue in West Rogers Park, and reached out to its leaders to see if they might be interested. A few months later, Momma Chef's Soup Kitchen was born. "I have a fundraising background and worked with nonprofits for many years, including the Anti-Defamation League, so I saw my life prior to having kids and my experience organizing events and activities to be helpful," Nochimowki says. "I volunteered for many years for a food pantry so I had an idea of what it was like." Mama Chef 's Soup Kitchen is a natural outgrowth of the Momma Chef blog, which Nochimowski launched so she could easily share recipes with friends, family, and other moms (she has three sons) looking to provide healthy, home-cooked meals for their kids. Her cooking philosophy can be summed up as: "6 ingredients, 6 minutes of prep time." "When I first started the blog there was a picture—a caricature of a mom with a kid on her hip and another hanging on her leg—and that was my

"I really believe that sometimes you find your love of something just by doing it and you realize, 'wow I love this'," she says. After she started posting photos and recipes to her Momma Chef blog, it quickly took off. She has more than 36,000 followers on Instagram and is a frequent contributor to food and lifestyle magazines. "I didn't have Instagram or Twitter when I first started. I might have done a little advertising on Facebook," she says. "I didn't really know what I was doing but then all of a sudden people started sharing my posts and I quickly had 3,000 followers, then 5,000, and it just grew from there." Before the COVID-19 pandemic brought stayat-home orders across the nation, Nochimowski and her volunteers were serving more than 100 needy individuals and families each week. Every Tuesday night, she and her volunteers would prepare and serve meals, all drawn from her recipes, at Congregation KINS. "Because we do it once a week that makes us a little bit different. There's no overhead and there are no employees so we can really put money into the meal," she says. "There are a lot of soup kitchens that are doing it daily so it's more of a basic meal just because that's all they're financially able to provide." Karen Ecanow is Nochimowski's right-hand volunteer. The two met at Moriah Congregation, their synagogue in Deerfield. While Nochimowski runs the upstairs kitchen, Ecanow coordinates volunteers who handle logistics and seating in the dining room. Ecanow is grateful for the opportu-

mitment to the Jewish community and working with other volunteers to give back. She also enjoys the atmosphere. "The work is very relaxed. If we're seeing the food's not getting cooked in time, we'll figure it out," Ecanow says. "We don't have bread for a recipe, and we're supposed to have it, so we make something else." During the state lockdown, Congregation KINS was forced to temporarily close its building and Momma Chef's Soup Kitchen along with it. But that didn't stop Nochimowski from continuing to feed the needy. She took the soup kitchen on the road. A chartered bus had already been bringing in residents from a Chicago shelter to Congregation KINS each Tuesday. Leaders from the shelter reached out to Nochimowski to see if she could continue to provide meals for residents of both the shelters they operate. Tapping into a soup kitchen volunteer list of more than 700, Nochimowski proceeded to organize a home-cooked meal drive for the shelters. Volunteers signed up for a particular day and meal and cooked from their own kitchens. "I set up a Google spreadsheet where volunteers could pick a slot and posted it to Facebook. Four hundred people volunteered within five hours," she says. CAMP IN A BOX WITH SOME HELP FROM HER DAUGHTERS, DONNA BOZZO OF WINNETKA HAS LAUNCHED AN INNOVATIVE OPTION THAT CAN BE DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR SO KIDS CAN STILL HAVE FUN IF THEY'RE UNABLE TO ATTEND CAMP THIS SUMMER. The pandemic, which has had kids stuck at home, has made Bozzo's expertise more in demand than ever. "Like they say, it's unprecedented and I think it's challenging for the kids because they're used to being at school or playing with kids their age," Bozzo says. "Your parents might be limited because they're working from home. Not all moms, but certainly some, are frustrated." Bozzo is especially enthusiastic about launching the venture with her two oldest daughters. Since her girls were already home for most of the second semester, they were getting involved in some of her other ventures. She's hoping the experience will help further their business education. "It's been hard on the kids because that's kind of their job to be out and meeting people and doing internships," she says. "That experience was taken away from them." The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent restrictions likely to be in place through the fall means that summer camps as we knew them are off the table. This has left North Shore parents scrambling to find an adequate replacement for that annual rite of passage—activities that can keep their kids' minds and bodies active during the warm weather so they can get back to their own pursuits as we ease into this “new normal.” Wouldn't it be great if you could have the joy of “summer camp” delivered to your door? Enter the enterprising women of the Bozzo family. For years, Donna Bozzo has been helping parents create households of fun for their kids. This success has positioned the Winnetka resident as a media expert on the subject, with bylines in such publications such as Good Housekeeping and Redbook, and appearances on NBC’s TODAY show. Recently she took that mission to help parents keep their kids engaged one step further. Together with her three daughters, they launched Fun Camp in a Box—a collection of interesting and engaging activities for kids delivered to the front door each week. "My two oldest daughters are both business majors at (University of ) South Carolina and they had internships lined up, but then things changed," Bozzo explains. "When I found out the summer camps were going to be limited or cancelled because of the pandemic, I wanted to create a project that would be interesting for them. So we started a little company where they could learn and also do something good for the community." Fun Camp in a Box includes a weekly supply of 10 to 12 activities for kids in two age groups: 3 to 6 or 6 to 10. The first batch of boxes was delivered last week and included soil and seeds to plant a

"Every week will be a little different and the boxes will include everything you need for simple activities," says Bozzo. "Some of the activities will call for assistance from parents but everything is there, and it's all laid out so that it's easy for parents to jump in if they have to." Bozzo worked in television early in her career and, after having three daughters, used her experiences providing activities for them to become a "family fun expert.” She's also written two books.

her sisters learned and played while they were young. "Growing up with a mom like I did was awesome … an irreplaceable experience … and it influenced me and my sisters," Grace says. "Every vacation, we did a road trip and we would make multiple stops so we could see different museums. Off the beaten path types of trips were my mom's thing. It made us so much more well-rounded." Grace adds that the basement of their house as children was the activity room for the entire neighborhood where kids could come over after school and do art projects. "Elephants are my favorite animal and I remember making this huge elephant out of cardboard boxes," she says. "We could paint on the walls. It was just the cool spot for kids to come and do fun things." While Grace has a summer job, she's excited about the opportunity of working on the Fun Camp in a Box project. "I've loved my job, so far, but it isn't necessarily the same experience that I would get with an internship in terms of exposure. So the idea behind this company is to get to the point where it can grow into a bigger business with lots of orders and it would give us the exposure in terms of operations," Grace says. "Supply chain is my sister's major and my major is accounting, and we just want a hands-on experience of managing a company of our own." In addition to the learning opportunity offered by helping to run a small business with her mom and sister, Grace is happy to be part of a project that is meeting an important community need. "I also want to try and help out those families whose parents are full-time workers and need something for their kids to do," she adds. So you get away to the woods, maybe to find something in nature that’ll lighten your mood. Now, you’re on a woodland trail not far from

home and you see a deer. You guys make eye contact. The deer is not fazed, but slowly turns away. You were absorbed by a nice moment there. Then you see a blue jay. That’s the way you like it, even the way you need it, especially these days. When you leave those North Shore woods, all settled and free of words, what craziness makes you go to the keyboard and type these? If we learned anything from the recent COVID19 pandemic, it’s to appreciate the small things in life that bring us so much joy. So, when Wisconsin began to reopen and Illinois restrictions eased, my family and I couldn’t wait to escape to open air and all the small-town amenities of Door County. Remembering the peaceful walks in the woods and s'mores by the bonfire at a home we stayed at last year in Egg Harbor, we returned to that 7,000-square-foot retreat a few weeks ago. With one acre of private woodland, 6 bedrooms, 6.5 baths, and a large, 1 bedroom, 1 bath coach house, it’s everything our large family of eight children needs to spread out, take off those masks, and soak in the natural beauty of the area. And the good news is, Door County tourism was wellprepared to welcome travelers back to this pristine part of Wisconsin with social distancing and other safety precautions in place.

Frozen Custard at Not Licked Yet in Fish Creek was still a hit, as was watching the sunsets from our beautiful terrace. It felt like we had all the luxury of the North Shore right here in the splendor of Door County, and when you know more about the owner, you’ll understand why. This spectacular property and a neighboring vacation rental (almost identical in size and layout) both have Chicago connections. Bill O'Neil told me that when he and his Winnetka friends Kevin Plunkett and Carter Reuhrdanz bought the threeacre parcel in the 7500 block of Mariner Road in 2012, it had been the site of an old hotel with a series of small cottages spread along the waterfront. "We razed the dilapidated cottages and divided the land into three lots," O'Neil says. "We sold

one lot and built two mansions on the other, enlisting renowned Winnetka architect Doug Reynolds to draw up the plans."

O'Neil's wife Cindy Erickson did all the decorating with only highend furniture, linens, and amenities, all which adds to the luxury experience. After being stuck inside our house for months, we felt more pampered than ever. Every floor had radiant heat, including the garage and coach house. The kitchen was very high end, with Wolf Range and Subzero refrigerator, and the great room with a roaring fireplace and big screen TV continues to be a favorite family gathering place. My kids especially enjoyed the large yard and private access to the waterfront. There's so much to do right there on the property that we almost didn't even need to

go into the nearby small towns, and given pandemic safety concerns, that makes it even more perfect. However, I'm glad we did check out our favorite spots—venturing out to Fish Creek and beyond almost every day. We enjoyed all the qualities the area is known for, from the cozy feeling of the people to the quaint shops and restaurants. It’s more important than ever to patronize them and help them rebuild summer business. And once again, by the end of the vacation, my perception of what a Door County getaway can be exceeded my expectations, and that's exactly what O'Neil and his team had in mind. "Our goal was to develop the land to provide a luxury rental experience," explains O'Neil. "We would enjoy seeing more renters from the North Shore, whether it be for family reunions, business retreats, or small, intimate weddings." A NEGOTIATOR AND A NAVIGATOR SHOOTING SURVIVOR AND SWIMMING ENTHUSIAST PHIL ANDREW AIMS FOR LASTING PEACE—AND PEACE OF MIND. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Former FBI Special Agent Phil Andrew should be investigated for cornering the market on the Sunday morning smile. You know the look. It’s quick and easy and utterly genuine. It’s a smile that says, “Another great day to be alive!” Mr. Andrew—a Wilmette resident, Good Guy since birth, and a Father’s Day honoree this weekend—also flashes it Monday through Saturday. Family and friends receive it. Strangers pumping gas or exiting the grocery store respond to it. Those COVID-19 masks? They try to conceal Andrew’s upbeat ways, but they usually fail, spectacularly, because they don’t blanket his dancing eyes. A gun-toting Laurie Dann must have squinted at the sight of Andrew’s blinding countenance on May 20, 1988. Dann had recently shot and killed 8-year-old Nick Corwin and wounded five children at Hubbard Woods Elementary School in Winnetka, when she entered the Andrew house in Winnetka—uninvited. Phil was 20 and a University of Illinois history and political science doublemajor who minored in churning rapidly for the Illini men’s swimming and diving team. His mother, Ruth Ann, greeted Dann. “Laurie was upset and distraught,” Phil, 52, says. “My mom showed concern and wanted to help, and she treated Laurie like she treated anybody who visited our home.” The pair of calm, spur-of-the-moment negotiators convinced Dann to call her mother. The call got disconnected. Ruth Ann and her husband, Raymond, then escaped to safety outside. Phil urged Dann to dial up her mother again. “She did that, but something wasn’t clicking,” Andrew says. “I sensed Laurie’s mother didn’t realize the seriousness of the situation.” Commotion from outside the house rattled Dann, who shot Andrew in the chest. The bullet missed his heart by the width of a splinter, punctured both lungs, riddled his esophagus, and lodged into his left latissimus dorsi. A dedicated swimmer’s lat isn’t a normal muscle; it’s a rock-hard fortress. “I dove for cover and got outside,” Andrew says. “I didn’t know the extent of my injuries. All I remember having is a sensation—an inability to breathe. At that point, being a swimmer and knowing a certain breathing technique helped me. I thought, ‘OK, take short breaths. Stay alert. Take short breaths. Stay alert.’ ” Dann took her life on the second floor of the Andrew abode. Andrew, a Loyola Academy Hall of Fame swimmer, recovered and returned to the pool in Champaign, racing mostly in freestyle events and captaining the Illini squad, before enrolling at DePaul University’s College of Law. He practiced law in Chicago and managed a violence prevention organization. His rookie year in FBI work was 1997. FBI stints landed him in Kansas, New York, Washington, D.C., and overseas. He lived in Lawrence,

Kansas, for six-and-a-half years. Placid Phil and his resting heart rate of two beats per minute, along with his colleagues, gathered evidence to quash terrorist threats, investigated bank fraud, and lassoed cattle rustlers. He’d reach an expertise level in violence prevention, national security and crisis negotiation, among other areas, in his 21-year tenure at the agency. Our world, in 2020? It’s dealing with a pile of crises. Remember, back in the day, when 99.5 percent of reports and stories in news outlets mentioned the pandemic? Economic fears surfaced later. The fight for racial justice then knocked those issues to No. 2 and No. 3 in the Major Concerns rankings. “Fractured relationships tend to show in a crisis,” Andrew says. “Our social system, our health care system … too many inequalities exist, and those usually lead to major fissures, not minor fractures. We also need to be there for each other.” Andrew met his future wife, law student Michelle, in law school and their first date—a party, hosted by then-State Sen. Bill Marovitz, with then-Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and newsman Bill Kurtis also in attendance—happened to fall on Michelle’s birthday. Andrew gave her a card and a flower before the bash. One flower only. Sweet, thoughtful, perfect. More than one flower would have come across as Phil trying too hard to impress. They got married in 1994 and have four children: UCLA senior swimmer Olivia; U.S. Naval Academy plebe/swimmer Everet; Loyola Academy junior swimmer Lachlan; and 12-year-old Georgia, yet another water dart. “Still one of the smartest people I know,” Andrew says of Michelle, a Deerfield native. “When she focuses all of her attention on something, be it a task or an issue or a case or caring about a person, it’s always

fun to watch her. She’s effective and compassionate.” The Andrew couple returned to the North Shore in 2011. Seven years later, shortly after retiring from the FBI, Andrew became principal of Kenilworth-based PAX Group. The group is a risk preparation, crisis, and conflict resolution agency that enables organizations to maintain confidence, build resilience, and establish safe environments while growing and achieving better outcomes. Andrew served as a transition committee member for both Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, supporting violence prevention work and police reform efforts. He fell madly in love with swimming all over again earlier this spring. Andrew swims for miles in Lake Michigan nearly as often as he brushes his teeth. It’s meditative for Andrew, simultaneously navigating the open water and absorbing the North Shore’s beauty. Ask Andrew about the family dog, a German Shepherd named Scout, and the lilt in his voice turns psalmic, instantly. “He looks at you, and he sees into your soul,” Andrew says. “One of the greatest pleasures of my life, being around our dog. He’s always happy around me. If you’re crying, he’d lick your tears away.” Mr. Andrew’s take on fatherhood? Those innumerable skills he developed en route to Ace Negotiator status have come in mighty handy under the home roof, he acknowledges. “It’s probably been my most challenging role,” Andrew adds. “But it’s also the most rewarding. It’s critical to listen as a father, to be nonjudgmental. I’ve seen my children respond to these crises; they’re showing deep empathy.
