John Nichols’ first sprint triathlon in 2005 didn’t go so swimmingly.

“Horrible experience,” the Winnetkan recalls. “Rough. I was heavy, grossly out of shape ... kind of an idiot. But I wanted to race again. I wanted to train properly for my next race.”

Two years later, the former collegiate lacrosse and hockey player entered an Olympic triathlon in Chicago. Nichols, who attended New Trier East High School for two years before graduating from Loomis Chaffee School in Connecticut, eventually took on nine grueling Ironman Triathlons.

“I got into endurance sports, more and more each year,” Nichols, 47, says. “I remember arriving in Pleasant Prairie (Wisconsin) for a triathlon in 2013 and marveling at the community of competitors and the energy of the event. Support was everywhere. Racers were willing to share their knowledge and tips on swimming, biking, and running.”

He became a USA Triathlon and Ironman certified coach and kind of fell in love with helping people reach their goals.

After a 20-year career in marketing, innovation, and product development with Miller Brewing, Constellation, and Beam Suntory, Nichols—the husband of Brenna and the father of sons Fisher (12) and Bauer (9)— has been a busy entrepreneur joining or founding start-ups in the alcohol, fitness, and technology fields.

In his most recent venture, Nichols—who had returned to Winnetka 10 years ago— teamed up with former U.S. Postal Service Pro Cycling Team member Robbie Ventura in 2020 to launch the software company Ve-

locity, a virtual endurance-training company. Nichols serves as its chief marketing officer and vice president of product development.

A technology company by coaches and for coaches, Velocity is like Peloton, but it’s geared toward cyclists and triathletes who train using their real bikes on a device called a smart-trainer. Velocity leverages two-way video and real-time data metrics (power, speed, cadence) to connect coaches and athletes with each other for live, replay, and video-on-demand workouts.

“World-class athletes, like Robbie Ventura and Meredith Kessler (a professional triathlete, Ironman champion), lead classes,” says Nichols, who coached his former Harvard University roommate, Scott Johnson,

ahead of an Arizona Ironman race this past November. “Velocity makes all styles of coaches accessible to athletes with an easyto-use interface.”

“Athletes,” Nichols observes, “are no longer limited to their local coaches, and local coaches aren’t limited to their local athletes.”

Nichols first met Ventura in 2013 at Vision Quest Coaching (VQ) in Highland Park. Ventura—winner of more than 70 pro races—had created VQ in 2000. VQ offers expert training programs for more than 500 endurance athletes of all levels from beginner to elite, including cyclists and triathletes ranging from 8 to 80 years old. Not surprisingly, Velocity has become an integral part of VQ’s training regimen.

“Velocity has allowed VQ to stay connected to our athletes, as facility training has not returned to normal,” says the 51-year-old Ventura, a Lake Forest College graduate and Hall of Famer (cycling and hockey) who lives in Libertyville with his wife, Lori, and their children Luna, Enzo, Luciana, and Raquel. “It has also allowed us to leverage our proven coaching methodology outside our facilities (Highland Park and Chicago) and made building our brand much easier outside the Chicago area.”

“We have given our remote athletes a place to feel connected to our coaches and other VQ athletes,” explains Ventura.

“Robbie,” Nichols says, “is insanely knowledgeable about all things cycling and naturally curious about training methodologies. He knows he’s not the strongest, most powerful cyclist, but he more than makes up

for that by being super smart about training and formulating strategies. He’ll drop back during a bike race to find his VQ racers and see how they’re feeling or to talk strategy with them. Robbie gets more joy out of helping others than he does out of racing,” he adds.

In addition to mainstream coaching, Velocity makes specific coaching available to adaptive athletes and youth athletes anywhere. Another market is those bikers who reintroduced themselves to their cobwebbed bikes in the garage or churned relentlessly atop a Peloton during the long days of the COVID pandemic.

“Velocity is not just for the serious athlete,” says Nichols, who espouses the maxim “Train Hard, Race Easy.” “A lot of people fell in love with riding their bikes again, and now they want to see what they can achieve while training on Velocity.”

Like its customers’ race times, Velocity is constantly improving. One development in the works is the creation of unique experiences, like riding with your favorite world tour teams and cyclists.

“We give people the ability to improve and grow in both their fitness and mindset,” Ventura says. “We understand the power of exercise and create events and options for people to explore new adventures on their bikes. We can help people live longer, gain confidence, and exceed what they thought was possible.”

Shirley Ryan AbilityLab has announced a $15 million gift from John and Kathy Schreiber of Lake Forest.

The gift has been directed to Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s Accelerate Ability fundraising campaign. Specifically, it will fund innovative care and game-changing research targeted to patients with diverse brain conditions (e.g., traumatic brain injury and stroke). It also will support Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s quality-oflife-programming, which helps patients adapt and thrive in their communities.

In recognition of this momentous gift, patients undergoing treatment for brain conditions will receive care in the newly named John and Kathy Schreiber Brain Innovation Center.

“We have invested heavily in advancing care and research for patients with various brain conditions, and also in helping people of all abilities participate in meaningful, life-

enriching activities,” says Peggy Kirk, president and CEO, Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. “This generous gift from John and Kathy Schreiber enables us to double down on this important work. We are so grateful for their investment in our mission and our patients.”

In addition to this gift, over the past decade the Schreibers generously have supported Shirley Ryan AbilityLab—from contributing to the capital campaign for its state-of-the-art

hospital, which opened in 2017, to qualityof-life programming and initiatives to speed patient recoveries using data insights.

“As longtime residents of the Chicagoland area, John and I have developed a deeply personal connection with Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s important mission and have seen firsthand the powerful ways in which the hospital’s integrated team of clinicians and researchers advance patients’ abilities,” said

Kathy Schreiber. “We are thrilled to support Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s transformational model of care, and the diverse patient communities it serves.”

Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s three-year, $100 million Accelerate Ability campaign was established in honor of Joanne C. Smith, MD, the organization’s visionary former president and CEO who passed away in 2021. The campaign is focused on four areas of critical importance—shortening the time frame for scientific discovery; attracting and retaining leading scientists and clinicians; revolutionizing research and recovery with novel, data-driven insights; and supporting unique specialty programs for a rapidly growing number of patients.

Gifts to Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s Accelerate Ability fundraising campaign can be made by calling 312-238-6013. Shirley Ryan AbilityLab has received gifts from several donors that will provide matching funds throughout the course of the campaign. For more information, visit sralab.org.

DJ PIZZAHEAD

Glencoe resident Andrew Vitale uses his ample creative streak to spin records and at the same time raise money for charity.

Andrew Vitale’s day job is leading an innovation team of researchers, strategists, and designers at SalesForce to help customers sort out their digital futures. He’s also been a graphic designer, creative director for an agency, and helped launch the first-generation mobile order and pay app for McDonald’s Corporation. He’s spent his entire career in the digital design world.

But what really scratches his creative itch is, well, music and pizza. Vitale, who was born in Evanston and spent a majority of his upbringing in Glenview, started playing music in a band at Mary Murphy Middle School in Wilmette (he played the bass) and carried on playing throughout high school at New Trier. He played drums in a band in college and in grad school took on a tongue-in-cheek persona of rapper named Laser Love.

After grad school he put a full band together but eventually put his personal

creative ambitions aside, but along the way, in a somewhat blurring of the lines between his personal and professional creative lives, he helped start the Prime Eight Art League in River North, which gave creators from around the world the opportunity to find private sector jobs which they otherwise wouldn’t have had access to.

Then COVID-19 hit and during that time he began re-evaluating everything and what mattered to him. He bought a bass (he’d sold his old one) thinking that was going to be the

way to return to his personal creativity days.

“That was a catalyst for ultimately landing on this DJ PizzaHead project, which coming out of COVID was a way to connect back with my friends and family while also being able to scratch the creative itch that I was kind of yearning to do,” Vitale says. “This is a super fun passion project for me.”

What is unique about Vitale’s DJ PizzaHead is its focus on charity, and it comes as no accident. Prime Eight Art League not only brought creators from around the world

NEWS 10 | SATURDAY JUNE 17 | SUNDAY JUNE 18 2023 THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

for job opportunities, but the organization also partnered with the Marwen Foundation to provide art education for CPS kids who had none in their schools.

“You can bring students there and then they get ready for college etc. It's a really cool program,” Vitale says. “The Prime Eight Art League, as part of that initiative, we did an annual fundraising event, and I learned really quickly when you launch a project, to have someone even listen to us from a sponsorship standpoint or from a partnership standpoint, tying in the nonprofit angle made us a little more legitimate.”

So, when Vitale launched his DJ PizzaHead brand, he says it was a no brainer to think about him in the same terms. Just a guy that likes spinning pizzas on his record players, but also tying in the charitable angle for World Central Kitchen and helping support fundraising events for whatever the event is raising money for.

“That just makes sense for me to kind of elevate what I'm doing because people can wrap their head around it and it has a little more weight than if I was just a just a DJ, for example,” he says. “Although fun, I'm a little less interested in that. I'd love to tie in other ways to be a little more meaningful and thoughtful about projects like DJ PizzaHead.”

Vitale created DJ PizzaHead in February, and only four months in it’s taken off in a way

Vitale couldn’t have imagined. He’s already got 10 or 12 events under his belt, and he’s booked at least one event a month through next February.

He’s still figuring out, in real time he says, what his business model will look like, but as of now he has fee-based events and events that he hosts directly for charities, many of which he does pro bono. He donates ten percent of his earnings for the fee-based events to World Central Kitchen

“What ultimately happens is that both

kind of inform each other,” he says. There's a pretty good balance right now of volunteer events that I'm doing and then these forprofit events that I'm doing just because you might get leads from them. So far, it's been about a 50-50 split.

Naming things is just a “bizarro” fun thing Vitale loves to do. He’s named all of the bands he’s been in and has one if not more nicknames for all of his friends. As a Chicagoan, it comes as no surprise he’s a pizza lover.

“I’ve loved pizza my entire life, and I often

get a sense of all things pizza because of that,” he says. “So, it makes sense from a personal brand standpoint to kind of light up this idea of pizza. I just married the PizzaHead idea or persona with the project.”

As far as his music selections, Vitale say it’s “more of a concept or a construct where the music fits in”. He doesn't really care about who the band or artist is, it just has to have a feel-good vibe to it. Revelers who attend his DJ sessions can count on some Groove Armada, The 1975, and Luther Vandross.

“Basically, if you're smooth, if you have a smooth vibe, I'm going to put you in the bucket of the playlist or the songs that I'm going to use,” he says.

One more opportunity Vitale is pursuing is partnerships with pizza restaurants. DJ PizzaHead recently performed at Grateful Bites in Winnetka, and he’d like to do more of that.

“There’s some intention there, which is also hilarious. I think there is something about the record player being a platform for pizza places to launch whatever new flavors or just partner with me in particular,” says Vitale. “That opens it up a little bit, too and makes it a little more fun.”

For more information about Andrew Vitale or to book DJ PizzaHead for a fundraising event, visit djpizzahead.com.

PANTRY PARTY

Northfield Township Food Pantry will host its annual Pantry Palooza concert and fundraiser on July 22 at Clarkson Park in Northfield.

Nearly 50 years ago, Northfield Township recognized that some of its individuals and families were going hungry or had gaps during the month when they couldn’t afford enough food.

It was from this need that the Northfield Township Food Pantry was born.

At first the pantry was a modest operation, run out of a small space at what was then the township’s headquarters. A nonprofit organization still operated by Northfield Township today, the pantry has grown over the decades and now has more than 1,000 families on its books and serves more than 700 families monthly.

“It was something that the township kind of took on and was willing to do, but throughout the subsequent decades, the need just continued to increase and increase until it then became formalized,” says Gayle Curcio, Northfield Township Administrator. “It is a

501(c)(3) and also an agency of the Greater Chicago Food Depository.”

The food pantry has become one of the largest services that the township offers to the community and while the township does a lot of other things, Curcio says the food pantry is probably the most well-known. Right now, the number one qualification to access the pantry is for individuals and families to be residents of Northfield Township.

Recently, the pantry has seen the need for its services grow. The economic troubles brought on by COVID-19 and more recently, food inflation, has caused an increase in families requiring food assistance. For example, in 2020 the pantry was serving 494 families or individuals per month, but that number has jumped to 711 as of January 2023.

While operated by the township, the pantry receives no public funding and is wholly reliant upon donations from individual and corporations, both to fund its operating budget and stock its shelves with food. One key way the pantry raises funds each year is its annual Pantry Palooza concert and party.

This year’s event will take place on July 22 in Northfield’s Clarkson Park.

Pantry Palooza got its start in 2017 and has Glenview Summerfest to thank. The Summerfest brought in food vendors, family fun such as face painting, and other attractions. That year, some pantry volunteers had the bright idea to piggyback off of the foot traffic at the Glenview Summerfest and add on a concert fundraiser for the pantry.

“It was nice because you had a built-in population of people. The village was supportive, and the chamber was supportive,” says Roxanne Dunn, Northfield Township Food Pantry’s Communications and Community Outreach Coordinator. “So, that ran at least three years, up until 2019, and then COVID hit everything in 2020.”

This year’s Pantry Palooza is being brought back with a flair. Five different bands will play at the event, which starts at 3 p.m. Alcoholic beverages will be available for sale by Ten 90 of Waukegan, and food by Hoffherr Meat Company of Northfield. Sponsors include Wintrust Bank Community Bank, Dermody

Properties, Autohaus on Edens, and the Vasey Agency of State Farm in Glenview.

It will all make for a great party, but both Dunn and Curcio say the important thing is to continue to raise awareness for the important work the pantry does in the Northfield community, which is needed now more than ever.

“The event is open to the public. Anybody is welcome to come on by and listen to some music. We're asking for a suggested donation of $10 donation at the door. We'll have food vendors, alcohol vendors, and the pantry will get a portion of the proceeds from those sales,” Dunn says. “It’s really a nice community-based effort this year to raise money for the pantry and to get awareness out.”

The Pantry Palooza benefit for the Northfield Township Food Pantry takes place on July 22, from 3 to 10 p.m. in Clarkson Park in Northfield. There is a suggested $10 donation, proceeds from which will benefit the pantry.

HIP CHECK

For Dr. Benjamin Domb, curing joint pain and arthritis is more than a job.

Joint pain. If you don’t suffer from it, chances are you know someone who does. And it’s not just that nice grayhaired lady with the cane who lives down the block. One in four adults— and around 300,000 children—are dealing with arthritis afflicting the hips, knees, shoulders, hands, feet, and spine. And physical discomfort is just part of the story. Joint pain and arthritis are leading causes of emotional stress, mental illness, lost hours at work, and opioid addiction. For orthopedic surgeon Dr. Benjamin Domb, finding the cure for arthritis and joint pain is his life’s work and he has committed “to use whatever abilities I have to the greatest, positive impact.” Dr. Domb is the founder of the American Hip Institute—the first clinic in the nation dedicated to the cutting-edge treatment of hip problems—and the nonprofit American Hip Institute Research Foundation, whose mission he describes as “alleviating human suffering by revolutionizing the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of joint pain.”

Raised in Toronto, Dr. Domb played basketball as a Princeton undergrad, and, after earning his medical degree at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and completing his residency in orthopedic surgery at Cornell University Hospital for Special Surgery, he began a career in sports medicine. He landed in L.A., where he cared for Los Angeles Lak -

ers, Dodgers, Kings, and Galaxy players. After he and his wife Anna relocated to Chicago (they live with their three children in Glencoe), he continued his work with athletes, serving as Head Team Physician for the WNBA Chicago Sky and treating members of the Chicago Bulls and Bears as well as professional athletes who fly to Chicago from around the country to see him.

Witnessing the increasing specialization in the medical field, Dr. Domb launched the equivalent of a full-court press when it came to addressing hip issues. He first established the American Hip Institute Research Foundation, a nonprofit that pursues innovation and the dissemination of research, and later the American Hip Institute clinic, which offers a range of surgical treatments for the preservation and restoration of hip function. “The goal is to prevent or cure joint pain. We’re using the hip as a model for how to do that, but our goal is to extend our approach to treating all joints of the musculoskeletal system. All of the treatments at the Institute ride on the research

done at the Foundation,” explains Dr. Domb. “So every move we make, every treatment we discuss with patients, is backed by proven data and research that we have published.”

The work of the Foundation is built on a triad of early diagnosis, preventative treatment, and curative surgery. “Hip replacement is the last resort,” says Dr. Domb. “The goal is to get ahead of the deterioration of the joint, and essentially stop arthritis before it starts.” With that aim, Dr. Domb and his colleagues pursue advances in regenerative medicine, using cell therapy to promote the natural healing of tissue. The Foundation has been at the forefront of spreading awareness leading to early diagnosis and has developed a preventative arthroscopic procedure to repair a joint before it develops arthritis. The procedure is a minimally invasive, outpatient method in which physicians insert a cameraguided tool through small incisions to diagnose and repair damage. For cases when curative surgery is needed, Dr. Domb has also pioneered the use

of robotic hip surgery and was the first surgeon in the country to perform robotic hip replacement as an outpatient procedure.

“Our team of researchers at the Foundation has not only been instrumental in the development of these procedures but has helped teach these techniques to the orthopedic community around the world. By educating thousands of surgeons, each of whom treats thousands of patients, we hope to affect the lives of millions of people suffering from joint pain,” says Dr. Domb. “The American Hip Institute, our treatment arm, represents a new level of specialization—because specialization begets excellence. That specialization makes it possible for our surgeons to be amongst the most experienced in the world in these highly technical procedures. We’re getting professional athletes back to their sport and middle-aged pickleball players back on the court.”

Fall-off-the-Bone ROSEMARY, GARLIC, AND MUSTARD PORK ROAST

Low and slow. There is no better way to cook a nice, big pork shoulder roast—one that you have marinated in a delicious rub of garlic, rosemary, mustard, and miso. At 250 degrees, the oven seems barely on. But as the hours pass, four … six … seven, the house fills with the most delicious aroma. And when you pull that roast from the oven and slice it, the meat falls off the bone, breaking up into tender morsels of savory goodness. Eaten that way, sauced with juices, and paired with vegetables, it’s irresistible. But you can also fill tacos with the meat as we

like to do, adding some pickled onion and cotija cheese crumbles on top.

To make this roast, we used a sevenpound, bone-in, pork shoulder (also known as pork butt) with the fat cap scored, searing it for 20 minutes at 450 degrees and then turning it down to 250 degrees and roasting uncovered for the remainder of the time. If using a smaller-than-seven-pound roast, start checking for fall-off-the-bone tenderness at the four-hour mark. If larger than seven pounds—say, in the nine-to-10-pound range, you’ll roast from 8 to 10 hours. Recipe adapted from Katie Workman, with kudos to Tyler Wolff-Ormes for the idea of adding miso to the marinade.

• 7 lb. bone-in pork butt roast, with fat cap on

• 4 large sprigs rosemary, divided (You will remove stems from two of the sprigs, mincing leaves to make 3 Tbsp. Save two remaining sprigs to place on top of roast)

• 3 Tbsp minced garlic (7 or 8 cloves)

• 1 Tbsp white miso paste

• 1 Tbsp anchovy paste

• 1 tsp Kosher salt

• 2 tsp freshly cracked black pepper

• ¼ cup olive oil

• 3 Tbsp country Dijon (coarsely ground) mustard

FOR TACOS

• 1 package fresh corn tortillas

• 3 cups shredded pork from roast recipe

• 1 cup pickled onion

• 1 cup crumbled cotija cheese

• Fresh cilantro, optional

• Hot sauce, optional

METHOD

MAKE MARINADE

In the bowl of a food processor, combine garlic, miso, and anchovy pastes with minced rosemary, salt, pepper, and olive oil. Pulse to create a paste, scraping sides of bowl as necessary. Stir in mustard. Pat pork roast dry. Place in a large Dutch oven, fat side up. Using a very sharp knife, score fat in a diamond pattern. Rub roast all over with the marinade. Place two remaining sprigs of rosemary on top. Cover and refrigerate roast for 2 to 24 hours. (Note: We marinated the full, 24 hours)

ROAST PORK

Remove Dutch oven from refrigerator to bring roast up to room temperature. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Place pork in preheated oven for 20 minutes to brown the top. Reduce heat to 250 degrees and continue to roast for 7 to 8 hours, until a meat thermometer slides into the roast with no resistance and registers 180°. Remove roast from oven and allow to rest for 20 minutes before slicing, or shredding. Note: Slices will break up into tender pieces.

MAKE TACOS

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Wrap tortillas in foil and heat in oven until tortillas are soft and warm. Fill tacos with shredded or chopped pork. Top with cheese, pickled onion, cilantro and hot sauce (if using.) Serve hot.

ALLISON BRUCE is a “intentional” jewelry artist and awardwinning writer. As founder of Flourish Integral Health, her mission is to help people feel cared for, empowered, and elevated. She is also a columnist for Energy Magazine. Bruce says it was “a time of despair followed by the pursuit of joy” that led her to develop her creative abilities and redirect from a successful path in corporate real estate management solutions to a career in the healing arts. An entrepreneur at heart, her first company was a line of children’s clothing with a celebrity sighting on The Oprah Winfrey Show

She says it was a recurring cycle of an autoimmune disorder starting in her late teens that led her to holistic health care. In addition to offering distance energy work, today she creates gemstone jewelry—a love that developed while studying Architectural Engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder. “The purpose of Flourish jewelry is to aid your awareness and personal power,” she explains. Necklaces and bracelets include an intentional name, and most a mantra. Before mailing an order, Allison blesses it with energy healing techniques and sends blessings to the receiver. The energy held in the jewelry supports the person to move forward by filling their space with the vitality of wholeness.

During the pandemic, Allison wrote a healing book—part memoir but mostly perspective—that received a 2023 Gold Nautilus Award. The mission of Nautilus is to “celebrate and honor books that support conscious living, green values, wellness, social change, social justice, and spiritual growth.” Notable past winners include Deepak Chopra, Thich Nhat Hanh, Marianne Williamson, Caroline Myss, Gregg Braden, Eckhart Tolle, His Holiness, The Dalai Lama, and Andrew Weil.

Flourish, A 365-Day Guided Path Towards Love: How to Experience More Joy, Live with More Intention, and Be True to Yourself is a life changing formula of holistic self-care perspectives, tools, and practices to help you get from where you are to where you want to be. Over the course of a year, you learn many things including how to awaken to your joy, determine what is truly important to you, and set intentions and work towards them daily. The journey unfolds in a magical forest to harness the power of your creativity. You can find Allison at flourishintegralhealth.com and on Instagram at @flourishintegralhealth. Here is what is trending in this intuitive North Shore resident’s universe:

#ON MY NIGHTSTAND

I’m consistently reading for “Soulful Reads,” my what-to-read column featured in Energy Magazine. Each column features three books, usually two newer releases and a classic. I recently finished The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin. If you are working on a creative endeavor, I highly recommend this book for encouragement of your art, or craft, and comfort in your authentic self-expression. Currently, I’m reading the classic Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain. I am finding the writing wonderfully validating and empowering. Next in my queue is Michael A. Singer’s newest book Living Untethered: Beyond the Human Predicament. I’m hoping to gain more insight to reach my highest creative potential.

MY MOBILE

One of the first things I read each morning is the DailyOM. The messages are pertinent and uplifting. On Instagram, for work inspiration I follow publishers, personal growth authors and advocates, people that talk about joy, and jewelry designers. Substack (The Present is my Substack) is new for me and motivating. In general, social media ungrounds me so I limit my time. I attribute taking a year-long respite from social media to being able to write my first book.

#IN MY EARBUDS

Whenever I hear a song that “sparks joy” I add it to my eclectic Spotify playlist, titled “Healing.” This is a powerful go-to playlist for my morning yoga practice. The combination of asana and heartfelt music is guaranteed to raise my vibration. While writing, I play Spotify’s classical suggestions. I enjoy listening to “On Being” by Krista Tippett while walking. Her conversations are alive and invigorating.

GETAWAY CAR

Some lucky car collector will soon get to park the 1961 Aston Martin driven by Peter Sellers in the comedy crime caper The Wrong Arm of The Law in their own garage, thanks to a July 14 Goodwood Festival of Speed auction hosted by the newly rebranded British motoring department of international auction house Bonhams. Topping out at a speed of more than 150 miles per hour, the DB4GT Coupé Chassis also owned by the actor himself was considered one of the fastest grand tourers of its time. Sellers, a noted car collector and aficionado of luxury marques, was particularly fond of Aston Martins. "The DB4GT was bred to compete and gained immense success on the racetrack in both National and International competition,” says Bonhams Cars Senior Collector Car Consultant James Knight. “It's arguably Aston Martin's finest road car and is right up there as the ultimate 1960s GT.” If you have any doubt at all, stream the film to watch Sellers’ character “Pearly Gates” make a quick getaway on a high-speed chase through Uxbridge Moor with a Wolseley 6/0- police car in pursuit. The car is expected to sell for more than $2.3 million. For more information or a list of other upcoming inventions, visit bonhams.com.

FATHER KNOWS —AND VOLLEYS—BEST

Everything’s coming up aces for Wilmette’s John Weinlader, a father of two and a co-founder of Volley, a revolutionary racquet sports trainer.

There might not be a North Shore 10-year-old who knows what perseverance looks like better than Emma Weinlader does.

She has watched her father, Wilmette resi dent and serial entrepreneur John Weinlader, embody the admirable personality trait for years. Her daddy, an avid platform tennis player, and his older brother, Dan, recently launched Volley, the first AI-enabled training experience that is backed by cutting-edge technology and delivers an on-demand, dynamic system for live play training and better workouts.

Volley is focused on racquet sports such as platform tennis, pickleball, tennis, and padel. The formation of the family venture required three vigorous years of development and the brains and resolve of 17 engineers, including the co-founders/siblings. Iteration No. 7 of the revolutionary product material ized this year.

Volley is John Weinlader’s fourth startup.

“For me, one of the exciting things about being a father is noticing that Emma is un derstanding what it takes to devise and run a startup,” says the 48-year-old Weinlader, who also has a 3-year-old daughter, June, with his wife, Molly. “There are calculated risks and blind risks with any startup.

“I don’t take the responsibility of father hood lightly,” adds the Lancaster, Penn sylvania, native who has lived in Wilmette since 2012 and is a member of the village’s Michigan Shores and Westmoreland clubs.

“I’d heard most parents will have spent 90 percent of their time with their children from day one until they turn 18. I’m trying my best to help our daughters grow up to be the best people possible, all while cherishing each moment with them. It has been fun and challenging.”

The same could be said for the evolution of Volley, which emerged as a first-of-itskind, smart device leveraging AI to replicate and improve real-time play for racquetwielding beginners and elite players and everyone in between. Unlike simulator-laden golf, racquet sports hadn’t had an innovation in training for 30 years. The Volley trainer can simulate any shot, including serves,

drives, lobs, volleys, overheads, screens, returns, and specialty shots.

“I became frustrated with the lack of op

pro feedback.

“Lessons with pros can be helpful, but I wasn’t getting enough reps during those

or taking things apart and putting them back together again. Among his fondest memories as a child was working with his father, Keith, on Dad’s blue 1965 Ford Mustang V8 with the pony-white soft top. The pair also attended car shows together. Keith Weinlader owned and operated Superior Tech Inc., a machinery manufacturer.

John Weinlader earned a degree in Engineering Sciences at Penn State University in 1997, eight years before graduating from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Brother Dan, 53, has a PhD in Electrical Engineering.

On his first day of work for a consulting firm, John Weinlader knew within 20 minutes that he belonged in another line of work.

“I called my dad up that morning and told him, ‘I don’t want to do this,’” Weinlader recounts. “Dad said, ‘So quit.’ So that’s what I did. I didn’t even make it to lunch on that day. I learned the value of doing what you want to do and never hesitating to trust your instincts. My dad, with the way he established and maintained his tremendous work ethic, had such a positive influence on me, and my mother (Central Wisconsin native Barbara) was loving and caring and did a great job holding our family together.”

Weinlader first met his future wife, former Northwestern University volleyball player Molly, when the two played beach volleyball doubles in Chicago one day. He stands 6-feet-6; she is 6 feet tall.

“Volleyball doubles,” Weinlader says, “is a lot like platform tennis doubles. You need power, placement, and good anticipation in order to succeed in both sports.”

This Father’s Day, Weinlader plans to rest his busy platform tennis paddle and relax with his family, probably at the pool.

“It’ll be a casual day,” he says.

It’ll also be a day to watch his daughters and reflect.

Some three years ago, Weinlader witnessed an indelible moment involving both.

“Emma held June for the first time,” Weinlader, smiling softly, says.

Happy Father’s Day, John.
