Although the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center (ILHMEC) in Skokie remains closed, its mission to “Remember the Past, Transform the Future,” is still being carried out daily through virtual programming. Here is a preview of the upcoming programming to be held during the month of June: 155TH ANNIVERSARY OF JUNETEENTH WITH SHERRILYN IFILL Journalist, filmmaker, and writer Alex Kotiowitz, who is in residence at Northwestern University, will lead a conversation with distinguished civil rights attorney Sherrilyn Ifill. Ifill is the President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund—the same organization with which she started her career. The timely conversation will include Ifill’s reflection on her own journey, which includes arguing in front of the Supreme Court at age 28, and a commemoration Continued on PG 12

The Choice: Embrace the Possible is a memoir by Holocaust survivor and internationally acclaimed psychologist Dr. Edith Eva Eger. Participants of the virtual program at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, are invited to read the book before a moderated group discussion. Dr. Eger is also participating in conversation with Joy Erlichman Miller, Ph.D. at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16 as part of the museum’s Book and Author program. Dr. Eger will share her memoir’s profound message of freedom from self-imposed limitations, and how we can make the choice to move from recovery to discovery and beyond. Imagine facing this month’s period without adequate funds to buy the necessary personal hygiene supplies. For one in four menstruating women, this is reality. But a Lake County-based nonprofit already well-known for fighting “diaper need” now is prepared to help on this front as well. Ann Marie Mathis, founder and executive director of Twice As Nice Mother & Child, said she knew that the National Diaper Bank Network had forged a partnership with the Alliance for Period Supplies in 2018. “We applied for membership to the Alliance in March to distribute period supplies, and we were accepted,” says Mathis. “We received a huge donation from U by Kotex in mid-April, including 48,000 pads and 55,000 liners, which helped us launch our program.” TANMC will supply up to 50 kits per month to its 30 local partnering agencies. Volunteers are

already distributing kits to those who receive ser vices t h ro u g h TANMC’s mobile diaper pantry program, which has grown to serve nearly 1,500 children and 1,100 families each month. “Most people don’t realize that period poverty is an issue for many women and girls,” explains Mathias. “The average woman spends 2,535 days on her period throughout her lifetime. For the one in four who struggles with period poverty, that’s a big source of stress. It can also be unsanitary and can prevent some women from attending classes or

going to work.” Mathis explained that there has been an uptick in general need because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In its diaper program alone, TANMC has seen skyrocketing demand since March as unemployment numbers spiked upward. Current distribution is nearly 90,000 diapers per month. “That pushed me to take a step back and think about this. Nobody around here is doing anything like this, so I saw this as an opportunity to fill a gap,” she says. Mathis also notes that recipients were very grateful when volunteers began distributing the period supply kits at mobile diaper pantry sites this month. “This is another way for us to support our clients by meeting a basic need,” she exclaims. “We are excited about our partnership with the Alliance for Period Supplies and look forward to their continued support of our period supply program. I think it was the cappellacci that ultimately did it. I don’t often reverse long-held dining commandments midway through a meal, but during a recent visit to the revamped Enzo & Lucia in Long Grove, I admit to experiencing a reawakening of sorts. Where I come from—i.e., a family that bleeds Neapolitan red sauce—one is taught to be on guard against any restaurant willing to serve you a Southern Italian app followed by a Northern Italian entrée. Pick your analogy of choice. Capulets and Montagues. Bears and Packers. Artichokes and cheap bottles of Merlot. Some things, I was taught, simply don’t mix. That all changed—in a flurry of yummy murmurs and fork scraping—when we put ourselves in the skilled hands of chef Heraldo Martinez, the new top toque at the longstanding Italian dining landmark in Long Grove. We knew were in able hands when our tutto pesce alla griglia app arrived, a bountiful mix of calamari, octopus, and shrimp coated in a light garlic-balsamic glaze and grilled to a delightfully smoke-kissed finish. “It looks like something Godzilla would eat,” said our awe-inspired 10-year-old, as he surveyed the giant platter overflowing with octopus tentacles and manicottishaped tubes of calamari. It was, for us adults at the table, memories on a plate, the kind of homespun grilled seafood offering my family used to serve during feast days and holiday dinners. Crisp, fresh, and undoubtedly Southern Italian in spirit, it’s exactly the kind of dish you want to kick off a family-style feast. If you know the history of Enzo and Lucia, you’re also likely aware that the original owners of the place, Enzo and Lucia Cavallino, were

Neapolitan. The restaurant’s early menu was Southern Italian through and through, but when they sold their restaurant to Glenn and Renata Cardelli in 2007, a couple with Northern Italian roots were given the keys to the kingdom. For more than 10 years, the two families worked together under one roof, even though the Cardellis were the actual owners. Things changed a few years back when the Cavallinos left the restaurant, allowing the Cardellis to infuse more Northerninspired recipes into its expansive menu. These days, the house meatballs are made from a recipe perfected by Renata’s mother, who lived for many years in the town of Bassano Del Grappa in the Veneto region of Italy. The results are richer and more airy. (“Less breadcrumbs and more cheese is all I can say,” says Renata.) And the menu has unveiled what is quickly becoming its house specialty: a short rib-stuffed cappellacci glazed in a creamy Marsala sauce. Only these cappellacci—stuffed pasta packets whose borders are usually folded to look like tiny tri-corned hats—are stuffed with so much short rib, they wind up looking like White Castle sliders. Truth is, they’re delicious: perfectly al dente bundles of Italian short rib that come bathed in a cream sauce that never veers too sweet or too creamy. Given its depth and breadth, it’s impossible to survey all of Enzo & Lucia’s menu, other than to say all of the apps and entrees we tried were stunning in terms of their size and value. As the old-school Italian joints on Taylor Street recede, Enzo and Lucia’s kitchen still prepare classic staples the right way. There’s a half of a chicken on every Vesuvio plate along with perfectly golden-browned potato quarters. Veal options include piccata, fontina, and parmigiano offering, but the veal saltimbocca topped with thin slices of prosciutto and mozzarella delivered best of all,

Nothing can compare, however, to ordering one of the house’s whole branzino, which is deboned tableside, and served with a garlic-caper sauce that’s light enough to add a little moisture without masking the delicate flavor of the fish. Just make sure to leave enough room for a slice of imported limoncello-ricotta cake, which is to the Amalfi Coast what a Key lime pie is to the

Florida Keys. In other words go south, then head north, before turning south again, and you’ll find, if you’re like us, that you’ve arrived exactly where you want to be: back home again with a full stomach and delicious memories. As you spend time quarantining at home, or taking solo walks on North Shore nature trails, you’re seeing cardinals. A lot. You don’t give them a second thought. But wait! Give them a second thought. If this exact bird were hardly ever seen, like some rain forest rarity that got lost and showed up around here by accident, you’d notice. You’d tell people. Not just because a cardinal’s got a prehistoric-

looking pointy crest, or because of its musical chirps, but because it’s completely bright red! This bird is a living stop sign. Why the ho-hum attitude when we see it outside our kitchen window? Imagine you couldn’t pick up your newborn child without harming yourself. Or you developed swelling on your hands simply by pushing your child around Disneyworld in a stroller. Or that simple, everyday activities caused blistering on your feet so bad you couldn’t walk. Imagine you’re Megan Gosselin. Gosselin suffers from a mild, but still painful, form of epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a group of rare conditions that result in easy blistering of the skin or mucous membranes. As Gosselin explains, human skin has two layers and most people have a layer of “velcro” between them that both separates them and holds them together. Those with EB are missing that middle layer, which makes it much easier to damage the skin. For some, the disease is life threatening. “You have to watch the clothes you wear, the shoes you wear, and be really in touch with your body,” Gosselin says. “It looks like lots and lots of blisters and those blisters can cluster and last for months. Eighty percent of days I have a blister.” Gosselin was the first member of her family to be diagnosed with EB and, pre-Internet, her parents had to scramble to get information and figure out how to respond. Since then, research has advanced to develop treatments for the one in 20,000 Americans that suffer from the condition. Two years ago, when she was just 29, Gosselin testified before the FDA. “I’m a manufacturing engineer for GE so thankfully most of my day is spent analyzing data on a computer and not having to use my hands or feet to earn a living,” she told the committee. “There are days when I cannot hold a pen to write or dread a new introduction where a handshake can bring tears to my eyes. On days like this I rely heavily on my husband, family, and co-workers to do simple

Ed Kugler quit meat cold turkey nearly 50 years ago. The Highland Park teen who’d regularly eat bacon for breakfast, cold cuts for lunch, and some kind of meat for dinner returned home from Michigan State University one summer day in the early 1970s and made a startling announcement to his parents, Fred and Honey: “I’m a vegetarian.” Their immediate reaction? “They freaked,” recalls the gregarious Kugler, now 67, a gifted storyteller, and the manager of Ravinia Farmers Market. The beloved market opened at Jens Jensen Park in Highland Park for the 42nd year on June 3 and runs every Wednesday through October 28 (priority hours for high-risk shoppers: 7-8 a.m.; general public hours: 8 a.m.-1 p.m.). Kugler was in an intro to restaurant management class at MSU when his brow furrowed hard and morphed quickly into rows of tilled flesh. A professor had informed the class that the way food looked and tasted was more important than its ingredients or how it was grown. The assertion made zero sense to the boy known as “the nice guy” during his days at Highland Park High School. Kugler then devoured books for health nuts before a “health nut” was a designation and pored over more ingredients on food labels than young, rabid baseball fans read statistics on the back of baseball cards. He did not complete his studies at the Big Ten-school in East Lansing, Michigan, but he earned a “Ph.D.” in Organic Food in one month in 1976, via traveling some 5,000 miles, coast-to-coast, to visit 52 natural food stores, 37 natural food restaurants, 19 distributors, and 14 organic food farms. That World Vegetarian Conference, held in Bangor, Maine? Curious Kugler was there. Another conference, staged in Fairfield, Connecticut, the one with natural hygiene diet expert Dr. Herbert Shelton topping the bill? The guess here is that attendee Kugler left the gathering with at least one

sore arm, the by-product of having asked so many questions. Two years later, a vendor known as “Sprout Man” set up shop at the inaugural Ravinia Farmers Market (RFM). He did not wear a c ape

adorned with an “S” in 1978. Nor did he shoehorn himself into a phone booth to slip into a pair of red muck boots. Ed Kugler was, however, able to leap a crowded platter of whole cucumbers and tomatoes in a single bound. Look for the 42nd RFM—backed by the Ravinia Neighbors Association and Taste Marketing—to feature a bunch of firsts because of the pandemic, including one-way foot traffic to ensure safety and social distancing, an online preview of purveyors and their wares, and the option to pre-order and pick up goods (offered by on- and offsite vendors). “It’ll be safer than going to a grocery store, because it’s outside and less congested,” Kugler says. “Locally produced foods available at a farmers market also means less handling. “Our farmers market, what makes it special, is its historical setting, its proximity to Ravinia Festival,” he adds. “It sits in a neat, little district.” A Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie-style house rested across the street from the Kugler house when Ed was young and his mother could count on the future natural and organic food guru to bake cookies and coffee cake. The view of the Wright house, a historical landmark, was impossible to miss at dinnertime. “We’d talk a lot during dinner, mostly about the family business [Chicago Window Cleaning, now part of The Millard Group],” Kugler says. “But that talk never left that room. Families having meals together, at home—think about how common that is now, because of the pandemic. Kids are no longer in programs after school, are no longer able to spend so much time in sports or other activities. There’s more family togetherness than ever.” Kugler has been married to his second wife, Randi, for seven years. A former administrative assistant, she is a computer whiz and an eagleeyed proofreader. “My backbone,” insists Ed, who has two children from his previous marriage, the eldest named A Owen Kugler, or A-OK for short. He’s 30; his sister, Lillie, is 28. In 2001 Kugler introduced the TasteA-Thon concept, providing organic and natural food samples to students at local elementary schools. It’s never too early to consume healthy fare and fall in love with the edible choices, right? Eleven years ago, Kugler started to welcome Highland Park High School AP Environmental Science students to his back yard, home to 90 raised beds. choose vegetables and herbs and their growing and harvesting schedules. The club’s growing areas are located in Highland Park and Lake Zurich. Tinley Park is home to the venue formerly named New World Music Theatre. Kugler knows it well. Farm Aid, a fundraising concert founded by Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp and Neil Young, was staged there in 1997, in 1998, and for its 20th anniversary, in 2005. Organizers in ’97 were forced to shift the concert from Texas to Illinois—a mere three weeks before the Farm Aid date. New World Music Theatre employees scrambled. So did Kugler. Wholesaler Goodness Greeness contacted Kugler and asked him to round up crew members to procure donations. With help from Choice Sales & Marketing West President Reed Glidden, Kugler’s team collected more than $10,000 worth of organic produce that sated more than 1,000 musicians, staff, volunteers, VIPs, and guests. Young even sang the foods’ praises on stage, probably between performing “Heart of Gold” and “Harvest.” Fast forward to today, 23 years later, the year Kugler and his HPHS classmates are all agog about reconnecting in person and listening to past charttopping hits at their 50th reunion. But the pandemic will likely rearrange that event, too. Zoom conferencing, with its “Hollywood Squares” gameshow look, is clearly the best candidate to salvage portions of it. Kugler still keeps in touch with many of his friends from grammar school. Some will certainly stop by his Organic Food Club tent (No. 2) at the Ravinia Farmers Market to chat and laugh and reminisce on a Wednesday or two. “My good friends have told me, ‘You promoted organic foods all those years ago and stuck to your guns,’” Kugler says. “They’ve also said, ‘Kudos for being ahead of your time.’” Way ahead.
