On the heels of Memorial Day, local businesses are preparing to reopen their doors. “The wonderful news is that as of Friday, May 29, we will be able to move into Phase 3 of reopening our state, allowing several additional categories of businesses to open their doors,” says Joanna Rolek, Executive Director of the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Chamber of Commerce. Restrictions began going into place in Illinois in early March, with Governor JB Prtizker issuing an official Stay at Home Order on March 21. The Wilmette Park District expects to open up access to water and swimming as the third phase of Illinois Governor J.B Pritzker's 5 Phase Plan commences on May 29. The park district says it expects patrons to practice social distancing and that same-household groups will be limited to 10 individuals or less. Park district staff will be monitoring the beach to ensure social distancing guidelines are followed. The park district advises those heading to Gillson Beach to bring water bottles as water fountains will be closed, and that sailboat rentals will not be available through the duration of the 2020 season. Lake Forest residents can enter the

Visitors must have an ID that shows proof of residence in Lake Forest. The beach is also open to nonresidents, who can enter at the north entrance through a nonresident kiosk. There's a $25 per person fee that is nonrefundable and can be paid by debit or credit card only. Lake Forest Parks and Recreation staff will be on-hand to facilitate proper social distancing. Staff will be wearing appropriate personal protection equipment and beachgoers are encouraged to have a mask on-hand for entering areas of the beach, such as bathrooms, where people could be congregated. Parking is available in the Upper South Lot for patrons displaying a City of Lake Forest or Beach Parking Sticker. The Lower South Lot is open for those displaying a South Beach Parking Permit or those with a watercraft launch or watercraft storage permit. There's good news for boaters, too. With some precautions, the Watercraft Ramp Launch in the South Beach Lot is open for those seeking open water. 2020 South Beach Parking and Watercraft Launch permits are required. Contact the Sailing Office at 847-810-3664 for information about purchasing permits while the Recreation Center office remains closed. Staff are not permitted at this time to touch private boats or property so boaters are encouraged to bring along whatever assistance they might need in order to get their

While the guarded beach at Highland Park's Rosewood Beach is closed for the season, the recreation beach opened over the Memorial Day weekend with Covid-19 safety guidelines in place. Washrooms and water fountains are closed and social distancing is required. The Park District of Highland Park expects to allow expanded activities at the beach for groups of up to ten when Phase 3 of Governor Pritzker's Restore Illinois plan begins on May 29. The Park Avenue Boating Facility remains closed and the Park Avenue Barge remains closed to the public. Parks remain open under similar conditions as Rosewood Beach as are the outdoor tennis and pickleball courts. The district says it is regularly monitoring events as the Governor's plan moves forward and will keep residents up-to-date with announcements on its website. For more information about Rosewood Beach and other Highland Park beaches, visit pdhp.org/beaches/. Glencoe Beach is now open for season pass holders only. Due to Covid-19 safety precautions, the passes have sold out and the Glencoe Park District has established a waiting list in anticipation of safety restrictions being eased. The Glencoe Beach is open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and to walkers only from 6:00 to 9:00 a.m. The beach house is open for bathrooms only; and rentals, including beach chairs and umbrellas, are closed for the season. Paddle board and kayak rentals may become available as safety restrictions

Nature has negatively impacted Winnetka's beaches even before the Covid-19 pandemic, and due to erosion Elder Lane Beach and Lloyd Beach are closed for the 2020 season. According to the Winnetka Park District's website, Maple Street Beach and Tower Road Beach will open on June 20 or sooner pending progression to Phase 3 of Restore Illinois. For updates on Winnetka's beaches, visit winpark.org/covid19/. Lake Bluff 's Sunset Park and Beach remains open for walking and running as long as social distance guidelines are followed. There is no swimming allowed but subject to the rollout of the additional phases of Restore Illinois. Access to the beach is free to Lake Bluff residents. Resident Beach passes can be obtained with a state-issued photo ID or driver's license. Sunset Park and Beach is open to nonresidents for a daily fee. With unemployment numbers skyrocketing by the week due to Covid-19, Campus2Career Transition Ser vices (C2C) has launched a new coaching ser vice to assist individuals looking for new employment opportunities or who may want to pivot careers based on long-term changes in their industries. Launched more than 10 years ago, C2C has focused on preparing college graduates for the workforce. Through coaching, résumé preparation, inter view prep, and network building, C2C has a 98 percent record of placing new graduates in the industr y of their choice. The company is now offering a limited version of its coaching ser vices to help individuals, who have already started their careers. "We know the jobs landscape is going to look a lot different when the economy fully opens up and people go back to work," says Frank Schroeder, C2C's Founder and CEO. "O ur coaches and network of advisors are second-to-none, and we feel we can help a lot of individuals whose jobs have been impacted by Covid-19." Research shows that college graduates who get a first job that pays in the low $50,000s will earn more than three times as much in the first ten years as graduates who get first jobs pay ing in the low $20,000s. So, what is opening on May 29? To name a few: restaurants and bars for outdoor dining, gyms and fitness centers, salons and barbershops, clothing retailers, youth sports, and more. As with any move forward, there will be some adjustments needed by not only business owners and operators, but the guests who plan to visit as well. Here are some of the key guidelines to look for in the upcoming weeks: RESTAURANTS AND BARS will be allowed to open for outdoor dining. Businesses may serve guests on open rooftops, connected outdoor dining spaces, or indoor spaces where at least 50 percent of windows or doors can be removed and guests are within eight feet of the opening. Dining parties must consist of no more than six people. OUTDOOR FITNESS CLASSES with up

RETAIL BUSINESSES including clothing stores, shopping malls, and departments stores will reopen for in-store shopping, but 50 percent occupancy guidelines apply, and face coverings should be worn. Customers should not bring reusable shopping bags into stores and shopping mall food courts should have indoor seating and tables removed. OUTDOOR RECREATION FACILITIES should allow at least 10 feet of distancing between customer stations, and face coverings should be worn. Clubhouses should be closed. Imagine you couldn’t pick up your newborn child without harming yourself. Or you developed swelling on your hands simply by pushing your child around Disneyworld in a stroller. Or that simple, everyday activities caused blistering on your feet so bad you couldn’t walk. Imagine you’re Megan Gosselin. Gosselin suffers from a mild, but still painful, form of epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a group of rare conditions that result in easy blistering of the skin or mucous membranes. As Gosselin explains, human skin has two layers and most people have a layer of “velcro” between them that both separates them and holds them together. Those with EB are missing that middle layer, which makes it much easier to damage the skin. For some, the disease is life threatening. “You have to watch the clothes you wear, the shoes you wear, and be really in touch with your body,” Gosselin says. “It looks like lots and lots of blisters and those blisters can cluster and last for months. Eighty percent of days I have a blister.” Gosselin was the first member of her family to be diagnosed with EB and, pre-Internet, her parents had to scramble to get information and figure out how to respond. Since then, research has advanced to develop treatments for the one in 20,000 Americans that suffer from the condition. Two years ago, when she was just 29, Gosselin testified before the FDA. “I’m a manufacturing engineer for GE so thankfully most of my day is spent analyzing data on a computer and not having to use my hands or feet to earn a living,” she told the committee. “There are days when I cannot hold a pen to write or dread a new introduction where a handshake can bring tears to my eyes. On days like this I rely heavily on my husband, family, and co-workers to do simple

You have a basketball hoop on the garage. These days, with social distancing still a thing, you enjoy shooting baskets by yourself. You’re an old pro at this game. It’s unlikely that something 4-inches tall could block you. But that’s what’s happening. Your basket has a bird living under it. Every time you toss a shot, the bird pops out—like a cuckoo clock, although the bird’s a tiny “house wren,” not a cuckoo. On hikes in North Shore woodlands you’ve seen real cuckoos. The nearly footlong “yellow-billed” variety according to your field guide.

None of them would want to live under a basket. But a little wren would. It’s got a nest tucked below the hoop. You can see bits of straw. You can’t in good conscience shoot baskets without imagining the thundering shaking your shots cause. You look at the basketball sitting on your driveway. A little solo exercise would feel good for cabin fever during these Covid-19 stay-at-home days. Weather’s good. You want to play ball. But a wren has blocked you. It may not be a cuckoo. There’s value in attentive, engaging service.” Drum grew up in tiny Media, Pennsylvania, about a half-marathon distance from Philadelphia. Soccer was his sport. His pithy self-assessment of his ability on pitches: “Not very good.” Service and patriotism appealed to him and doubled the size of his heart. Drum looked up to Vietnam vets and way up to his Uncle Jack, a retired naval aviator who liked to sail and fly a small plane. “We’d hang out,” the nephew recalls. “My uncle was adventurous.” Drum went straight from high school to Naval Station Great Lakes near North Chicago, the U.S. Navy’s only boot camp. A former SEAL named Pete, quiet and mild-mannered and selfless, later served as one of Drum’s mentors before he completed Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training in 1996. “It was a thrill for me, and educational, being able to talk with a real SEAL,” Drum says. “I soaked up everything Pete said. Remember, that was a time before anybody could check out a YouTube video to see how a SEAL candidate trains. I was not good at math. I was slow, one of the slowest runners. I was doubting myself. But Pete helped me tremendously, trained me up.” Tours of duty landed Drum in Afghanistan, Iraq, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Combattested en route to achieving the highest U.S. Navy SEAL enlisted rank, he ended up with 27 years of experience leading teams and executing missioncritical

Forty-six-year-old Steve Drum stands 6 feet and weighs 220 pounds and could easily pass for either an All-Pro NFL linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles or the Brawny Paper Towels Man. But the Lake Bluff resident and retired Navy SEALS Master Chief didn’t play a down of football for Penncrest High School (Pa.) Lions teams, and serving as the flannel-shirt-clad pitchman for strong and absorbent sheets would shrink his opportunities—as a rookie speaker/consultant/coach—to help local businesses and business leaders tackle all kinds of challenges, including the countless ones associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. “Do you feel ready for your next highstakes moment?” a pacing Drum, in fullblown Win One For the Gipper mode, asks a room full of rapt folks in the precoronavirus era. “When fear or anger or frustration or anxiety enters the room, it can divert our focus away from where it needs to be. And you’re not going to rise to the occasion. Instead, you’ll fall to your level of training, to your level of preparation. “But if you have that deliberate process where you commit, prepare, execute, and reflect,” the father of a 14- and an 11-year-old continues, “you’re not going to react blindly, you’re not going to freeze, you’re not going to underperform. Instead, you will respond with the right action, with the right choice. And you will succeed.” Suddenly, for those listening to Drum’s inspiring messages, juggling a couple of Volkswagens and davenports on a tightrope doesn’t seem so far-fetched anymore. Drum conducted a Business Workout webinar— “Your Leadership Mindset: You’ve Got to Be In It to Win It”—for the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Chamber of Commerce on April 28. He showed how to shift one’s business and encouraged attendees to make the shift now. He also explained how a business can control its destiny by creating it today. His thoroughly prepared presentation touched on resiliency and pivoting and fearlessness and positivity. “Take an Italian restaurant in an early phase of the pandemic, for example,” Drum says in a phone interview. “It’s no longer able to serve food to customers at a table inside. But it’s able to satisfy customers through car-

performance strategies. His final stop before retiring late last year was at the Naval Service Training Command at USO of Illinois Great Lakes Center, where he co-developed—with a clinical psychologist and a Navy chaplain—and taught “Warrior Toughness” training. The order he had received before devising the culture-changing program: “Make our sailors tougher.” Business leaders navigating pandemic waters now get to absorb Drum’s sound principles and airtight strategies.

Two of the strategies: identify and commit to mastering essential aspects of your craft (“Be brilliant at the basics,” Drum annotates); and develop a deliberate process to study lessons learned in preparation for what’s next. Business executives strive to develop highperformance leadership programs that empower teams to achieve exceptional results when the pressure is most intense. Drum essentially did just that for underlings in arenas that featured flying bullets instead of bullet points in a memo. “One of the most rewarding aspects of my time in the military was training the members in my unit, making sure everybody was firmly prepared,” says Drum, a Lake Bluffian since 2015. “It wasn’t a glamorous aspect, but I loved that leadership challenge, and now, as a consultant and speaker, I’ll love being able to meet people in person and speak with them at events again after this pandemic ends.” Three weeks after attending one of Drum’s speaking engagements earlier this year, a woman figured Drum’s messages would have “drifted away amidst the bustle of daily life.” But she was wrong. Drum’s words stuck around. And continue to resonate. She recalls Drum’s memorable anecdotes before walking into high-stakes client meetings— and before helping “my daughter with her homework.” In between webinars and Zoom meetings and podcast appearances, Drum likes to pistol-shoot recreationally, play the electric guitar, and be “a bourbon nerd.” A vintage muscle car buff, he owned a ’69 Charger R/T and a ’70 ’Cuda convertible. “I sold both,” Drum says.
