When the athletic careers of Brandon Bollig and his wife, Dannah, came to an end—his as a professional hockey player and hers as an NCAA Division I soccer player—both were looking for a workout that could help them stay in shape. Years of playing two physically demanding sports had taken their toll, and Dannah began experimenting with a training regimen using bands to create resistance rather than weights, and a workout that didn't involve exercises that put pressure on the joints. Late last year the Bolligs launched Dannah Eve, which offers a set of resistance bands that can be used for cardio workouts and to workout other areas of the body. Together, the bands weigh 1.5 pounds and are perfect for working out at home or while traveling. Dannah Eve recently began offering a subscription service, The DE Method, that provides access to videos of Dannah demonstrating the many varieties of ways the bands can be used and the five specific workouts for all areas of the body, including abs, buttocks, arms, and upper body. "We really took something that started as a hobby and passion for Dannah, and once her soccer career ended she got the ball rolling on small-scale stuff with fitness videos and that type of thing," Brandon Bollig, a member of the 2013 Stanley Cup-winning Chicago Blackhawks, says. "Once I retired, we really put in the process of making it a real business and taking it to a new level." "My soccer career, unfortunately, didn't go as planned but it did expose my passion and love for fitness. Once I retired, I told myself I was going to take a few months

off and let my body rest and recover because my body was so beat up f rom the wear and tear," Dannah, who played soccer at the University of New Mexico, says. "But a few weeks later I was back in the gym. My respect for working out was out of it being a necessary evil, but in hindsight fitness was always my healthy outlet and form of therapy, my escape f rom the world where no one can tell me what to do or how to do it." Not surprisingly, Brandon and Dannah met at a gym. The two worked out at the same gym in Highland Park, where Dannah grew up, got together in 2016, and were married in 2018. "At the time Brandon was still playing professional hockey and we were constantly on the go. I tried to get a gym membership wherever we were, and it just started getting really tough," Dannah says. "We were moving so often that a gym didn't seem like the best way to maximize my time or my workout." Dannah says she didn't realize at the time that she was creating her own type of training as she began to gravitate further and further away f rom higher intensity exercise, working with resistance belts instead. She posted her workouts on Instagram, eventually building up a following of more than 25,000, and the idea to turn it into a business was born. "For the first time in my life I was more lean and I felt stronger than I had ever been and I truthfully was more confident in my own skin," she says. "So after about three-plus years of practicing and really refining this training style, Dannah Eve was born."

The spread of the coronavirus earlier this year prompted the couple to speed up The DE Method and video offerings, knowing that gyms were closing and many people would be confined to their homes but still looking for ways to stay active. "We just went into overdrive and really put our hearts and souls into creating these workouts and getting the subscriptions up as soon as possible so that people could benefit f rom them and still get a great workout in, while staying in their own homes," says Dannah. The two former athletes, who trained at the highest levels during their playing days, are particularly proud to be offering workouts that are accessible to anyone and for all age groups and fitness levels. Because the workouts put less pressure on the body, they are a good long-term solution to staying fit. "I couldn't continue to train at a high level of intensity that's so hard on my body, and that's the beauty of this," Dannah says. "It's really for everybody. We wanted to make everybody feel included no matter their age

Rachael Kahan, a high school teacher and coach who lives in Chicago, says the variety of workouts and the convenience of working with the bands is what drew her to The DE Method. "I never used bands before and now I realize how effective they can be," says Kahan. "The bands are really easy to use and the way Dannah models them and demonstrates them makes it really easy and accessible." Kahan, who coaches a f reshman girls basketball team, says she's encouraging her students to consider using The DE Method to stay in shape while they can't hit the gym for workouts. For someone as busy as Stephanie Biegel, an entrepreneur in Chicago, The DE Method is all about getting a lot done in a short amount of time. "I follow Dannah on Instagram and saw her workouts and her bands," Biegel says. "For me, as a working woman, time is of the essence. I can weave her workouts into other things I do and fit them into my current life." Talia Brahms, who works in sales and lives near Fort Lauderdale, Florida, says the variety of workouts created by Dannah initially grabbed her interest. "When the pandemic started, I was at a loss for how to continue my workouts and keep them exciting and versatile," says Brahms. "There are only so many jogs around my neighborhood I can do without getting bored. Dannah was posting videos on her Instagram with new moves and it got me interested." Like many successful businesses, the Bolligs point to the organic growth of an initial idea, and their ability to work well together to see it come to f ruition in the form

"This is so cheesy but I always tell people Brandon is my best f riend and we really do everything together," Dannah says. " To be able to launch a business and not only that, to have it be successful, is rewarding." "To be able to start a business with your best f riend who's also your spouse is just a very cool experience," adds Brandon. "We really appreciate that we're in a position to do it." Imagine you couldn’t pick up your newborn child without harming yourself. Or you developed swelling on your hands simply by pushing your child around Disneyworld in a stroller. Or that simple, everyday activities caused blistering on your feet so bad you couldn’t walk. Imagine you’re Megan Gosselin. Gosselin suffers from a mild, but still painful, form of epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a group of rare conditions that result in easy blistering of the skin or mucous membranes. As Gosselin explains, human skin has two layers and most people have a layer of “velcro” between them that both separates them and holds them together. Those with EB are missing that middle layer, which makes it much easier to damage the skin. For some, the disease is life threatening. “You have to watch the clothes you wear, the shoes you wear, and be really in touch with your body,” Gosselin says. “It looks like lots and lots of blisters and those blisters can cluster and last for months. Eighty percent of days I have a blister.” Gosselin was the first member of her family to be diagnosed with EB and, pre-Internet, her parents had to scramble to get information and figure out how to respond. Since then, research has advanced to develop treatments for the one in 20,000 Americans that suffer from the condition. Two years ago, when she was just 29, Gosselin testified before the FDA. “I’m a manufacturing engineer for GE so thankfully most of my day is spent analyzing data on a computer and not having to use my hands or feet to earn a living,” she told the committee. “There are days when I cannot hold a pen to write or dread a new introduction where a handshake can bring tears to my eyes. On days like this I rely heavily on my husband, family, and co-workers to do simple

Another stay-at-home day in the era of Covid-19. But spring is here so you can enjoy backyard bird watching through a window, or from a patio chair. You bring extra seeds to your feeders, anticipating fun views, a way to take your mind off the challenge of quarantine living. But then your bag of birdseed breaks, splattering five pounds of the stuff all over your lawn! Well, okay. It’s nesting season and you figure birds could use some extra, even if it’s a mess. Pretty soon the seeds get noticed. Birds come in droves. Droves attract more droves. Numbers soar. Hey, that reminds you

of something, but what? No matter. You see sparrows, goldfinches, jays, crows, cardinals. Cool. And on the ground, squirrels, herds of squirrels. You realize the increasing activity in your backyard is growing exponentially. This is what happens to a clever YouTube video, an internet joke, or a suddenly hot song. The numbers spiral and it goes, what’s the word? Oh yeah, it goes “viral.” Wait. That’s not a word you want to be reminded of on this pretty morning. Oh well, better that it has to do with backyard birds than ... no more said. LET THE “SUNSHINE” IN: AN INTERVIEW WITH FREDA LOVE SMITH BY GREGG SHAPIRO THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Have you read Evanston resident Freda Love Smith’s delicious 2015 memoir Red Velvet Underground? Published by Evanston-based press Agate, it’s a delectable “rock memoir, with recipes” that makes for tasty reading during these days of sheltering in place. Smith, who works at Northwestern University, is also well-known as a musician having performed in seminal college rock band Blake Babies (along with Juliana Hatfield), as well as The Mysteries of Life (with husband Jake Smith) and Some Girls (with Hatfield, again). Smith’s latest musical incarnation, Sunshine Boys, finds her teaming up with a pair of Chicago music legends, Dag Juhlin (The Slugs) and Jackie Schimmel (Big Hello). Sunshine Boys’ just-released new album Work and Love (Pravda/Room F) is full of catchy rock tunes that are as luminous as the band’s name. I had the pleasure of speaking with Smith in early May. Gregg Shapiro: Freda, I first interviewed you in 2015, around the time of the publication of your wonderful memoir Red Velvet Underground. Looking back on the book, what was the most rewarding aspect of the experience? Freda Love Smith: The thing that pops into my mind first is my book tour. That experience of going around the country a little bit; it was a very modest book tour. But I did get to a lot of different bookstores and had the chance to have public conversations about my book with some amazing moderators. Also, the chance to connect to the bookstore audience. It was so much fun. I compare it to my experience touring in rock bands. Being on a book tour was such a wonderful contrast to that. Not having to carry drums! Just having to carry a pen and myself. Being in bookstores, which obviously have such a different vibe than rock clubs. GS: And your ears probably weren’t ringing after the readings. FLS: [Laughs] exactly! No hangovers, no ringing ears. Just a really delightful change of pace. I so enjoyed all of those conversations. I had a chance to tie it into my background as a musician, too. For example, I did an event at Harvard Bookstore… GS: …in Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts. FLS: Exactly. It’s been there forever, and I’ve always admired it. I bought a lot of books there when I lived in Boston. The conversation was moderated by my old bandmate, Juliana Hatfield. It felt like this moment of connection where all these points in my life came together in this interesting and satisfying way. I felt so lucky to have that experience. Looking back, I loved writing the book and putting it together, but the thing that gave me the warmest feelings was the experience of going around and connecting with people about the story. GS: Do you think you might have another book in you, say a novel or short story collection? FLS: I am working on a book right now. It’s taken me a while to make a real start, but I have now. I’m really excited about it. It’s an enormous departure from my first book. It’s going to be another work of nonfiction about a historical figure, who was a member of the Symbionese Liberation Army, which was the group…

GS: …that Patty Hearst was involved with. FLS: Yes. There’s a real connection between the SLA and my hometown of Bloomington, Indiana where several of the members lived and went to school. Some of them were from Indiana. I’m finding an interesting connection to the town I grew up in and this extreme, fascinating moment in American history. It’s in its early days, but I hope from my personal cookbook memoir, I can go to writing this biography of this person with whom I’ve become fascinated. GS: Your latest musical project, the Chicagobased trio Sunshine Boys, has something in common with a couple of your other musical outings including Blake Babies and Some Girls, in that the band has three core members. Can you say something about the appeal of being a part of a three-piece? FLS: I love three-pieces. A lot of my favorite bands, such as Hüsker Dü, are three-pieces. But I also love being in a three-piece. I like the importance that it places on each member to carry their weight and earn their keep. I like minimalism and figuring out how to do more with less. It’s a philosophy that has informed my drumming and I enjoy the way that, in a three-piece, no one can hide, and no one can get lost either. Three’s a magic number. GS: These trios also have something in common in terms of their names—in addition to being two words, there is also a youthful aspect: boys, girls, babies. Do you think that is symbolic of something or just coincidental? FLS: I’ll call it coincidental, but I tend to lend meaning to coincidence. There’s something to it. It’s funny with Sunshine Boys that the band is predominantly female. The rhythm section is two women, so it’s a little bit of a joke, I guess. It also refers to a film, so there’s a whole other layer to it. There is a youthfulness to it and that’s funny too, because we are all [laughs], shall I say seasoned veterans of the music world. The movie the name refers to is about aging vaudeville performers trying to stay relevant or still having something to offer, to contribute. I feel like there’s a lot at play there about age and a certain underlying anxiety in the sense that rock is for young people. It’s a young person’s world. But there’s something in Sunshine Boys that reminds me of the poem “Ulysses” by Tennyson where he says, “Some work of noble note, may yet be done.” There’s a feeling in Sunshine Boys where we’re not quite done yet. We’re not going to step aside for the 20-year-olds. We still have something to say and something to offer. There’s a lot wrapped up in bands’ names. GS: Work and Love is the new album by your current band Sunshine Boys. How did Sunshine Boys come to be?

FLS: Sunshine Boys came to be in a couple of stages. The first was really a jokey barstool conversation when I first met Dag Juhlin, who was in a fantastic Chicago band, The Slugs, from the indie rock days. He’s been in Poi Dog Pondering since the ’90s. I met him five or six years ago in Chicago when a friend took me to see his excellent cover band Expo 76. We immediately connected. It turns out that Blake Babies and The Slugs played a gig together in the ’90s, but we didn’t meet each other. We realized that we had crossed paths in all these different ways. We started joking about being old entertainers and said we should start a band called Sunshine Boys, referring to the Neil Simon play and movie. It seemed like one of those funny things you say in a bar, not something you would actually do. A year or so later, we were recruited by a friend of ours, Brett Neveu, the playwright… GS: …who did the Verboten play (about Evanston-based Jason Narducy’s first band)… FLS: Yes, exactly. Brett and his friend Rich Sparks, a really talented cartoonist who’s been published in The New Yorker, were writing songs and they needed a backing band. They recruited me and Dag and Jackie to be their backing band. That reminded me and Dag about the conversation that we had. I think he had it in the back of his mind that it would be a good band. Once we started playing together, we immediately connected. Like I said, three-piece bands are the best. Dag had a couple of songs on hand and we got together and played. There was an immediate musical affinity, which wasn’t a surprise. A kind of chemistry that doesn’t happen every day. GS: The songs on Work and Love are credited to Sunshine Boys. How does that songwriting process work? FLS: We have a pretty worked-out process. Dag brings a song into rehearsal in a fairly formed shape, but still with some space. We arrange the songs together. It starts with him and we work out the details together. Our bass player, Jackie, is particularly good at arranging songs. She’s someone with an encyclopedic knowledge of music and she’s a close listener. She studied music in college. She brings an incredibly valuable attention to detail and arrangement. We collaborate easily together. We can be completely honest with each other. We communicate well and share a work ethic and esthetic. I don’t take that for granted. It’s not always like that [laughs]. GS: “The Serpent in Spring” sounded to me like a song about climate change, especially with the lines “August is freezing/December is warm.” Am I on the right track? FLS: You’re very much on the right track. It addresses that as well as this whole litany of con-

cerns that we have over this grave situation that we’re in. There’s a political thread that runs through Sunshine Boys. It’s not that every song is overtly political. It’s just a streak that’s in there. We’re of our time. GS: The song “Summertime Kids,” which I love, is the polar opposite. It sounds like the perfect summer single, the kind of song you’d hear blasting from cars with their windows rolled down. What would it mean to you have the song become a hit with listeners? FLS: I would love it more than anything. I no longer entertain expectations of that kind of thing happening. But I’m always open to some magical occurrence. When you put music out into the world, it’s because you want people to hear it. You want people to connect with it. So, if there’s anything you can do, Gregg, to make that happen…[laughs]. GS: I’ll get right on it [laughs]. Speaking of rolled down windows, we are speaking in early May 2020, with the world amid the COVID-19 pandemic. What have you been doing to stay safe and sane currently? FLS: It’s actually been pleasant to have the new record out. Unfortunately, it’s not the release we planned. We had planned some exciting live shows that we were going to do, and we were hoping to get out on the road. Obviously, all of that’s off. In the absence of those opportunities, we have been trying to create others. Our singer Dag did a gig arranged by the bar FitzGerald’s. He played on a truck that drove from location to location, playing a lot of Sunshine Boys from the back of truck with carefully socially distanced audience members coming out of their houses listening to the music. We’ve been doing interviews on Zoom and talking to people, trying to figure out the best way to make a “live” recording of one of our songs to share. It’s helped me to have this music that I feel strongly about out in the world. To have these creative challenges, how to promote our record and still reach people even when we are staying home. GS: When we spoke in 2015, you and your family had been living in Evanston for five years. Now, in 2020, you’re coming up on 10 years in Evanston. Can you please say something about what makes Evanston special to you as both an artist and now longtime resident? FLS: The first thing that comes to mind is what a supportive place it has been for me as an artist. There are so many people in Evanston that are my age and still doing creative work. Still playing shows and writing songs and making music. It feels supportive and energizing to me to be around that. There are great venues, too, which is obviously not happening now [laughs], but will happen again. Places such as SPACE and Wine Goddess, places that are comfortable and beautiful and people want to go to them. Audience members that go because they tend to care about music. I remain completely in love with Lake Michigan. I’m actually currently in Indianapolis, temporarily helping my father. I’ve been hunkered down here. There’s a lot going on with my family, and I’ve been here doing my job at Northwestern remotely, but I’m going back to Evanston next week and I can’t wait to go look at the lake again. I’m not sure I’ve ever been so attached to a piece of geography as I am (with the lake). It’s grown to be important to me, so I’m looking forward to getting back to Evanston and Lake Michigan. AUGUST AUGIE NEW TRIER ATHLETIC DIRECTOR FONTANETTA DESERVES A THUMBS UP FOR HIS HANDLING OF LOST SPRING SPORTS SEASONS. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Augie Fontanetta’s green thumb endured quite a workout last month. New Trier High School’s athletic director flitted from front yard to front yard along the North Shore, planting a lawn ornament into each. He had permission from homeowners to do so, and he received plenty of landscaping help from NTHS head coaches and assistant coaches. The thrown-together ground crew made 196 house visits in all, because 196 NTHS senior athletes were set to compete this spring. Until the pandemic came along and shuttered fields and courts and pools and track ovals. A virus took its ball and went home, wherever that is. The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) canceled all spring sports seasons because of COVID19 concerns on April 21. Fontanetta & Co. pierced patches of sod last month with a yard sign that read, “NEW TRIER SENIOR ATHLETE.” Each sign’s unwritten messages: “We ache for you.” “We’re thinking of you.” “You're not forgotten.” For suddenly benched, stay-at-home senior athletes, intermittent honking horns from passing cars would have to suffice, would have to somehow replace sustained roars from New Trier-green-clad spectators in stands. “We all had anticipated the IHSA’s decision,” says the 49-year-old Fontanetta, NT’s athletic director since 2016 and a New Trier teacher/coach from 19942008. “That was a tough day. Hard to stomach. I felt for every athlete and everybody involved in an extracurricular activity, not just our seniors, and I felt for all of our coaches. Coaches, like our athletes, take pride in representing New Trier and had prepared months for their spring seasons. Think about what our seniors have also missed or will miss this month—yearbook distribution, prom, graduation. “Our seniors also won’t get to enjoy that feeling of being a senior

walking in our hallways in their final month at New Trier,” he adds. “That probably doesn’t sound like much, but that’s a special feeling.”

At this time last spring, amid the staging of postseason tournaments all over the state, it wasn’t unusual for Fontanetta—the husband of Chris and the father of their three multi-sport athletes (University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh senior Katie, 21, and Buffalo Grove High School students Megan and Alyssa)—to start his workday at 7 a.m. and return to his home in Arlington Heights at 9:30 p.m. This spring? Fontanetta and his immediate staff had to formulate contingency plan after contingency plan before the IHSA scrapped the 2020 spring sports season. Now, instead of watching Trevians zip around a track at a big meet, he’s conducting meetings via Zoom. It’s just not the same. One of Fontanetta’s assistants, Jim Burnside, also coaches varsity girls soccer at the school. The six-time state champion coach recently hosted a virtual banquet for his 0-0-0 squad, tied for the best overall record in Illinois. A Lou Malnati’s personal pizza was delivered to each booter. The banquet lasted three hours. “Jim told me all about it,” Fontanetta says. “Told me there was a lot of laughter. A lot of crying, too.” Nothing would make Fontanetta smile wider than the opportunity to honor New Trier’s senior athletes in another way would. More than 60 of them committed to play a sport in college. There’s hope of holding a latesummer gathering to recognize all 196. “If that won’t be possible,” Fontanetta says, “maybe we’ll be able to do something for them at the school w h e n they ’re home f o r

Thanksgiving.” A young wrestler/ football player named Augie Fontanetta ate turkey on the last Thursday of November at home in Norridge during his formative years and beyond. As a Notre Dame (Niles) High School student, he’d pile a second helping on his plate, but only when he wasn’t worried about making weight for the Dons’ upcoming grappling meet.

He was raised by his late father, also named Augie, and his mother, Gilda. The elder Augie was an avid sports fan, a hardworking Norridge Park District board commissioner and an approachable, uber-friendly Little League coach. “My father was genuine, very involved in the community,” says the son, who coaches travel softball in the summers (Katie Fontanetta played nine seasons on teams coached by her father). “Everybody liked being around my father. He was the ‘mayor’ of Norridge.” The younger Augie secured his physical education/health education degrees at Northern Illinois University and got hired by former New Trier Kinetic Wellness Department Chair Bonnie Beach in 1994. “She took me, a raw kid, and helped me mature as a teacher,” says Fontanetta, who guided varsity wrestlers at the Winnetka school for five seasons before Fremd High School plucked him to serve as the Palatine school’s athletic director, beginning in 2008. “My passion for coaching also catapulted me to my passion for teaching. Bonnie had a great influence on me. She helped me learn about the tremendous culture at New Trier. Coaches at New Trier are teachers first, and those teachers consider playing fields and other athletic venues as extensions of their classrooms.” Fontanetta helmed the Vikings’ athletic department at Fremd for five years before accepting an administrative position at Township High School District 211. His “Bonnie Beach” at Fremd was Lisa Small, who soared from principal to District 211 superintendent at breakneck speed. “Perspective … Lisa’s perspective is always good,” Fontanetta says. “She kept a level head when I worked with her. She was firm and consistent as a leader.” He lauds New Trier Principal Denise Dubravec’s leadership today. He marvels at Burnside’s perpetual hunger for putting his players in a position to capture the state’s biggest soccer prize. “You’d think a coach like Jim, with all of the state championships he has won in his career, would lose some of his drive to succeed. Well, you’d be wrong. Jim’s passion never wavers. Never, ever. He believes every player in his program should be able to experience the feeling of being a part of a state championship team at least once, and he works incredibly hard, each season, to make that happen. I truly admire him.” Fontanetta misses a lot this spring. Misses highfiving coaches and players after big wins. Misses watching joyous Trevians touch state hardware. Misses shaking hands and laughing with other Central Suburban League athletic directors on sidelines during contests. Misses interacting with a New Trier all-stater for a few minutes and then making the last player on the bench feel like an all-stater minutes later. “I love my job, love seeing our athletes develop and mature from year to year,” Fon- tanetta says. “I love connecting with kids and stopping them in the hallways to chat. “I have found a silver lining during this pandemic, and I know others have, too.
