In 1972, when the Chicago Botanic Garden (CBG) opened its doors, it featured one small garden and one small green house. A little over 20,000 visitors walked the garden that first year. A lot has changed the past 50 years, says Jean Franczyk, CBG’s President and Chief Executive Officer.

“What began as an ambitious vision to have Chicago’s own public garden is now 28 gardens and four natural areas in Glencoe, 16 community gardens and farm sites in Chicago and Lake County, and dozens of conservation and restoration research sites around the country,” Franczyk says. “We are thankful to all who have shown up for nature, supported our conservation mission, and inspired us to keep imagining a future where people and planet thrive.”

On Friday, May 13, the Chicago Botanic Garden launched a summer-long 50th birthday party titled, “Flourish: The Garden at 50,” which includes 10 works of art by artists from Chicago and around the country and the world. The works reflect the intersection between nature and human creativity. According to Jodi Zombolo, the garden’s Associate Vice President for Visitor Events and Programs, the exhibition was a team effort.

“We had a group of people from different departments in the garden trying to think of

a way to really celebrate our fiftieth in a fun way,” Zombolo says. “We know that art and nature often intersect, and so we came up with this idea of not just having one artist, which we have done in the past for the garden, but multiple artists, all of them inspired by the garden to create their piece for us in the celebration.”

To identify the artists, the garden staff put a call throughout the Chicago area and other regions asking artists to submit a statement if they were interested in participating. They then narrowed it down to the ones they felt really were a good fit for the event and asked the artists to submit proposals detailing what they would create. The process identified ten local, national, and international artists. Not all are in the landscaping world.

“Patrick Doherty is well known in the botanic garden world, and he's done these all over the U.S. and overseas, but some of the other artists haven't done an outdoor piece or even a garden,” Zombolo says. “We worked with them, having them come and look at the place, and really be inspired about what we were going for.”

Zombolo says in their communications with artists they used phrases like sustainability, celebration, and nature-inspired to get the artists to have a good feeling of what the garden wanted. They also wanted artists to think outside the box.

“We really wanted to celebrate all of our accomplishments, the garden’s accomplishments, staff accomplishments, and say, ‘Thank you’ to our patrons, our members, our visitors, our donors, and to our boards,” says Zombolo. “They have all helped us get to where we are today, and we are considered a young garden compared to others that have been around for hundreds of years.”

Zombolo says the 50th birthday celebration is unlike any the garden has undertaken in the past, and she thinks visitors will be “pleasantly surprised” when they come upon the art installations, even if they aren’t aware the party is underway. Other exhibits are also part of the celebration.

“Flourish,” which runs through September 25, also includes pop-up events on the second and fourth weekend of each month. On its opening weekend, the garden’s women's board sponsored a flower bomb on a piece of construction equipment because there’s usually some type of construction happening.

“They were making light of that and having fun with it and doing this great big piece of floral work, and it was just beautiful,” Zombolo says. “We gave away lollipops. where after you eat them, the seeds are in the handle, and you take that home and plant it.”

Zombolo has played a number of roles at the garden, starting in 1994 in the development department. She left in 2000 and returned in 2006 working on public programming. She been there ever since, and the 50th anniversary celebration has personal meaning.

“I found my job the old-fashioned way, literally, in the Chicago Tribune, and circled it with a pen,” she says. “I did meet my husband here, who has worked here for 40 years. We met here and have been married for over 20 years.”

“We have an exhibition in our greenhouse galleries that talks about the past, present, and future of the garden, and it's all done in a really

engaging and fun way,” she says. “A lot of it also has to do with our staff stories of what the garden has meant to them or what they’ve seen

MILESTONE MOMENT AFTER A TWO-YEAR WAIT, THE WINNETKA CHILDREN’S FAIR WILL CELEBRATE ITS 75TH ANNIVERSARY IN JUNE WITH FOOD AND FUN FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS ALIKE.

Put those tech gadgets down, kiddos. The Winnetka Children’s Fair is a return to old school fun, and it’s back after a couple of years off. The fair is celebrating its 75th Anniversary with bouncy castles, rides (zip line, Giant Fun Slide, bungee jump), hot dogs, fancy snow cones, and the beloved Candy Castle.

For parents, there will be beer and wine from Winnetka’s own Good Grapes, as well as a retrospective display created by the Winnetka Historical Society with photos and memorabilia from the fair over the decades.

The fair was started in 1945 initially as a fundraiser for Winnetka Community Nursery School. It was originally held in a local resident’s back yard but moved to the Village Green in 1948. The Board of Directors of Winnetka Community Nursery School sponsors the fair.

“It’s been held in the Village Green every year since 1948 except for the two years that we had to take off for COVID,” says Catherine Ernst, co-chair of this year’s fair. “It's grown to become a very large communitywide event, but I think most people don't even realize that it's put on by the preschool and not the village.”

More than 4,000 people from across the North Shore attend the fair each year, and it's all run by parents at the pre-school. Over 200 volunteers also pitch in to keep it running.

“It’s the starting kickoff for the summer.

The kids get out of school, and they race to the Village Green on their last day,” says Ernst. “We have pony and camel rides and games. We're going to have a Kona shaved ice truck this year which is kind of a fancier snow cone.”

Perhaps most importantly, the Candy Castle will be back. At the fair since the ‘80s, the Candy Castle is a wooden structure that kids can enter and fill their bags up with the candy of their choice.

“I know that for some people who grew up in Winnetka, the Candy Castle is a very beloved attraction for them,” Ernst says. “It's something that they always remember and associate with the children's fair.”

Because of the fair’s long history of providing family fun, it holds a special place in many North Shore resident’s lives. Not many community traditions date back to the Truman administration.

While the fair has changed over the years, it has stayed focused on providing old school fun for kids of all ages, according to a 2021 article in the Gazette, the newsletter of the Winnetka Historical Society, “In 1949, one of the games was ‘throwing wet sponges at a human target’,” the article states. “The 1950s fair featured hoof-print autographs from Misty of Chincoteague, the horse hero of the book by Marguerite Henry.”

“I think it's a really big part of the tradition of growing up in Winnetka and the surrounding areas. It's definitely been a great way to bring the community together, especially with being off for two years.”

Ernst says. “I think it's going to be especially meaningful to be bring it back this year.

Celebrating this huge milestone is what people are really looking for these days and it’s going to be such a special way to kick off the summer.”

For Ernst, her involvement in planning the fair this year is personal. Her daughter

attended Community Nursery School and her brother, Jeff Warren, attended nearly 30 years ago. Her mother, Mary Warren, was involved in planning the fair back while her brother was there.

“My daughter started out at Community Nursery School, and I just fell in love with the community and everything that the preschool stands for. My son is currently in the program there,” Ernst says. “I joined the board at the beginning of COVID and it's a way of being involved in the community and

also being a part of something that impacts my children’s lives.”

The Winnetka Children’s Fair takes place on Thursday, June 9, from 12:30 to 8 p.m. and Friday, June 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Village Green, 525 Maple Street in Winnetka.

Admission is free; tickets for rides, activities, and food and drink will be available for purchase.

CARA CARA ORANGE AND LENTIL SALAD WITH KALE PESTO

BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Tiny beluga lentils really do look like caviar pearls, and this brightly flavored salad is a fine way to feature them. For textural contrast and flavor enhancement, I’ve included the crunch of marinated celery root matchsticks, and richness of kale pesto in the mix, topped off with the pinky orange sweetness of cara cara orange. You can include parmesan in the pesto, or, for a dairy-free rendition, just leave the cheese out. Note: You’ll want to serve the salad topped with some of the orange, celery root, and parsley, because if mixed before service, the deep hue of the lentils will overwhelm the bright colors.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE MARINATED CELERY ROOT: • 1 organic celery root, peeled and sliced into very thin matchsticks, divided (After marinating, you will mix ½ of the matchsticks with marinade into the lentils + top the salad with the remaining matchsticks) • 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard • 2 Tbsp rice vinegar • 2 Tbsp water • 1/8 tsp salt • 1/8 tsp pepper • 2 tsp sugar (optional) FOR THE KALE PESTO: • 1 very fresh bunch organic Tuscan kale, stems and strings discarded, leaves chopped to make • 4 ½ cups

METHOD Whisk together mustard, vinegar, water, salt, pepper, and sugar. Pour over celery root matchsticks and set aside. In the bowl of a food processor, combine chopped kale leaves, pine nuts, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Pulse to finely chop, scraping down sides of processor bowl as necessary. Continue to pulse, while adding olive oil in a slow stream.

Remove pesto to a bowl and stir in finely grated Parmesan, if using. In a heavybottomed stock pot, heat 3 cups water with 1 tsp salt to boiling. Add lentils, reduce heat slightly and cook for 20 minutes until lentils al dente; not too soft.

• ½ cup pine nuts • 2 cloves garlic, minced to make 2 tsp.

• ½ tsp kosher salt • ½ tsp freshly cracked black pepper • ½ cup extra-virgin olive oil • ½ cup finely and freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese (Note: Do not use pre-grated powder-like parmesan) FOR THE LENTIL SALAD: • 1 ½ cups black beluga lentils, picked over and rinsed • 1 tsp salt • ½ of the marinated celery root from the recipe above, plus marinade • 4 cara cara oranges, divided.

• ½ cup fresh parsley leaves, minced

Pour lentils into colander to drain any remaining water.

Place lentils in a mixing bowl. Stir in pesto. Slice off and discard peels from three of the oranges. Slice orange flesh from these three oranges into small wedges. Juice the fourth orange. Stir half of the orange wedges and all of the orange juice from the fourth orange into the lentils. Add ½ of the marinated celery root matchsticks, and all of the marinate.

Stir to incorporate. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Spoon lentil salad into serving bowl. Top with remaining celery root matchsticks, remaining orange segments and minced parsley. Serve.

MAN ON A MISSION—OR TEN HIGHLAND PARK NATIVE JOEY MORELLI IS ALL SET TO TEACH FOOD PREPARATION AND SHARE HIS LOVE OF COOKING AT AN ORPHANAGE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA. A LAUNCH EVENT AND FUNDRAISER WILL BE HELD AT HIS MAX’S DELI ON MAY 24.

Joey Morelli is frightened.

The butterflies in the stomach of the owner of Max’s Deli in Highland Park have been flitting incessantly since he committed to spend the month of July at the Hope House Orphanage in Cambodia, where he’ll teach cooking to the youngsters, encourage them to eat healthily, and build working kitchens.

“Of course, I’m scared,” the amiable and highly animated Morelli, 52, says. “I’m scared right now, just thinking about it. But you know what? I like uncomfortable. I’ll let the universe guide me. The universe won’t let me let those kids down in Cambodia. The person who’s in charge of the orphanage’s kitchen is a 14-yearold girl.

“I was made to cook, and the ability to share my skills with disadvantaged youth will certainly change lives—including mine.”

The Hope House Orphanage is a subsidiary of Hope For the Silent Voices, a nonprofit founded by former Deerfield resident and first responder Eric Lyons to bring attention and resources to the severely neglected, disadvantaged, abused, and discarded globally.

Lyons lives in Cambodia.

Morelli, a 1988 Highland Park High School graduate and the owner of Max’s Deli since 2011, met Lyons at a local fundraiser last year.

They hit it off, instantly.

“An amazing man,” Morelli says.

Both men will be at Joey’s Food Fight launch event and fundraiser at Max’s Deli (191 Skokie Valley Road, Highland Park) on May 24, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Joey’s Food Fight was created to fund Morelli’s travel chef residencies, and the family-friendly event at Morelli’s highvolume, New York-style deli will feature fun build-your-own food stations, such as taco and macaroni-and-cheese bars, a salad chopping block, a Vienna hot dog cart, and a S’mores bar.

DJ service will be provided by Deerfieldbased Bizar Entertainment. Founder Jeff Bizar and Morelli became good friends while attending the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign.

All money raised will go directly to Hope House Orphanage in Cambodia.

“I plan to a travel blog to let everyone know how I’m feeling at all points during the mission—the first of many,” says Morelli, a Chicagoan who’s a board member of Stand Up For Kids, an organization that empowers homeless youth. “Right now I’d like to complete a total of 10 missions like this, perhaps one a year. My life is all about food; I knew I wanted to be a chef at a young age. I’m a worker. I love working. I put my head down and work.

Morelli was hooked on cooking as soon as he made a frittata at home one day. He couldn’t escape food as a Sunset Foods bag boy in high school. He also couldn’t stick as a defensive end on Highland Park High School football teams.

“I was terrible,” admits Morelli, who had visions of donning a toque while turning in his football helmet after two seasons.

Morelli majored in Restaurant Management at Illinois (Class of 1992) and, after time spent in Colorado, earned his associate degree in Culinary Arts at Kendall College when the college was located in Evanston.

One of his first post-Kendall jobs was line cook at Gordon Sinclair’s famous fine dining restaurant in the Loop, where he eventually served in the pastry kitchen (his specialty: soufflé cake).

His first day was a harrowing one.

“I was asked to cook two cases of lobsters, or about 30 to 40 of them,” Morelli says. “I’d never done that before. I had to kill the lobsters.

“I cried the whole time.”

and opened Joey’s Brickhouse in the Lakeview neighborhood in 2003. He sold it after eight years and acquired ownership of Max’s Deli shortly thereafter.

“I’m still evolving as a boss,” Morelli says.

“You have to be nice to all employees at all times. We’re a team, and I’m no more important than a server or a dishwasher.”

Among his passions

His next stints were at city restaurants Spruce and Marche.

“I built my foundation for cooking while working those first few jobs after Kendall, right down to cooking broccoli right,” Morelli says.

In 1996 he worked at Wright’s, an upscale restaurant at the Arizona Biltmore, before heading to California to toil as a butcher and sous chef.

He then headed east— way east—to serve as executive chef at Citrus Bar & Grill in New York.

before and after work hours are pickup basketball games at LA Fitness, scuba diving, skiing, and golf outings with his 81-year-old father, Frank.

“My father is the best repair guy I know,” Morelli says. “I can’t tell you how many times he’s helped me at the restaurant. And he still works out in the gym; he’s one of those who believes, ‘Move it or lose it.’

He’s a rock star.”

Nothing amps up Joey Morelli more than an intense game of hoops does. He typically battles with, and against, athletes half his age and more than holds his own as a shooting guard who underwent a fourth knee surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament at the age of 36.

“A basketball court is my happy place,” Morelli says.

His perfect day?

“Busy breakfast here at the restaurant, and I’m slinging corned beef,” Morelli says. “It’s a summer day, with our patio area busy, too. My workday ends. I play basketball. My team wins.”

He has no idea what each day in July will be like in Cambodia.

But count on the positive-to-the-core Morelli to shoot for slam dunks—and shed a butterfly or two along the way.
