There is something to be said about a grateful person during a difficult time. As our communities, the nation, and the world continue the grueling fight against COVID-19 and its ancillary effects, we wanted to take a moment to recount some of the expressions of gratitude from members of the local community.

Diana Schaps of Citywoods in Highland Park expressed her gratitude for many of the workers currently working in essential jobs, “I am grateful beyond words to all the heroes working tirelessly on the front lines: the doctors, nurses, and the health care professionals committed to treating and healing us. I am humbled by the courage and duty of so many people who work with the public throughout this time in the grocery stores, airports, post offices, and so on, providing us with our essential needs. And I am grateful that my family so far is healthy, and working together the best we can, to ensure that we stay that way.” With so much uncertainty surrounding homes and businesses during this crisis, there have been some silver linings. Some people were encouraged by the unique opportunity that the quarantine

time has brought to their families. Joan Lynch of Lynch Construction in Lake Bluff mentioned, “The irony of our current situation in the U.S. is that it is bringing families together in a way that we don’t see on a regular basis—family dinner time. Everyone, whether in college or grade school are looking forward to the dinner hour. Imagine you couldn’t pick up your newborn child without harming yourself. Or you developed swelling on your hands simply by pushing your child around Disneyworld in a stroller. Or that simple, everyday activities caused blistering on your feet so bad you couldn’t walk. Imagine you’re Megan Gosselin. Gosselin suffers from a mild, but still painful, form of epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a group of rare conditions that result in easy blistering of the skin or mucous membranes. As Gosselin explains, human skin has two layers and most people have a layer of “velcro” between them that both separates them and holds them together. Those with EB are missing that middle layer, which makes it much easier to damage the skin. For some, the disease is life threatening. “You have to watch the clothes you wear, the shoes you wear, and be really in touch with your body,” Gosselin says. “It looks like lots and lots of blisters and those blisters can cluster and last for months. Eighty percent of days I have a blister.” Gosselin was the first member of her family to be diagnosed with EB and, pre-Internet, her parents had to scramble to get information and figure out how to respond. Since then, research has advanced to develop treatments for the one in 20,000 Americans that suffer from the condition. Two years ago, when she was just 29, Gosselin testified before the FDA. “I’m a manufacturing engineer for GE so thankfully most of my day is spent analyzing data on a computer and not having to use my hands or feet to earn a living,” she told the committee. “There are days when I cannot hold a pen to write or dread a new introduction where a handshake can bring tears to my eyes. On days like this I rely heavily on my husband, family, and co-workers to do simple

tasks for me, which at times is humiliating.” Because of the blistering and, for some with EB, permanent scarring, EB can be a socially isolating condition. Even up through her first college years at Rensselaer Polytechnic University in upstate New York Gosselin hid her condition from others. “Even through college I tried to hide it. I would wear certain clothes or not participate in certain activities,” Gosselin says. “I was worried that people thought it was gross or that I was contagious.”

In her early 20s, Gosselin began being more open about having EB. After she had her first daughter, she started having long online discussions with other women suffering from EB who were worried about passing the disease on to their children. She began to feel a sense of community, and that led her to become more involved in efforts to educate the public and advocate for a cure. The novel Covid-19 Virus, or the coronavirus, has upended life as we know it, at least for now and the coming days. On Friday, March 20, Governor Pritzker issued Executive Order 2020-10, ordering all Illinoisans to stay in their homes to prevent further spread of the virus. THE MASK PROJECT FASHION MAVEN KATIE MAY TURNS HER EYE TO THE MOMENT’S MUST-HAVE ACCESSORY: MASKS. BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Katie May likes to stay busy. As a clothing designer and owner of a fashion line, as well as mom to two young daughters, May is not one to sit around waiting for the world to come to her. As the coronavirus crisis began to unfold in late March, May heard reports about a shortage of protective equipment for health care workers. Two weeks ago, she sprang into action and launched the Mask Project, producing a line of masks for sale on her website, shopkatiemay.com, and the opportunity to donate to those in the health care industry. “Health care workers were asking for homemade masks because they wanted to preserve the N95 masks for nurses and doctors who were seeing patients directly,” May says. “What started as me trying to fill up this extra time—and maybe donate 30 masks a week to meet my creative and busybody needs—turned into a large production when people started asking if they could buy for themselves as well.” The project has already sold 600 masks, and has donated another 600, with plans to produce more masks for donations with revenue from sales to the general public. The project is also employing six seamstresses full-time during a period when employment is tough to find.

“I thought if I could pay a few more seamstresses—now six—to help produce, that would also mean I could donate more masks while keeping money in their pockets,” says May. “Our housekeeper is one of my favorite people and she has always been a big help with my clothing line. She is a really good sewer so she is one of the six working for me, and this gives her an income while she’s not cleaning houses right now.” With nearly 20,000 followers on her two Instagram accounts (@simply_may_ and @ shopkatiemay), May is using her social media profile to generate sales of the masks and increase her ability to make donations. “My life is very transparent through Instagram. I pretty much show everything,” she says. “A lot of people were watching and wanted or needed a mask.” With masks becoming a more popular accessory, it’s inevitable that fashion would start to play a role. May says her “cotton candy” line of masks are popular in California while boys are, not surprisingly, big on the digital “cammo” mask. Floral patterns are also popular given the season. For essential workers looking for a mask for donation or masks for others, May says the best way to reach her is through Instagram or via email at katie@shopkatiemay.com. “I’ve donated to nurses, doctors, grocery stores, Costco, you name it. This week I will be donating 200 to a friend who’s an oncologist and who has patients that are immune compromised,”

10,000 masks, which might not seem like a big number but the masks are washable and reusable and will last if taken well care of. And May says she’s not stopping there. “Ultimately I would like to reach out to communities that are getting hit really hard and donate both kids’ and adult masks to add another layer of protection for them,” she says. IRON-SKILLET PEACH CRISP

INGREDIENTS TOPPING: • 1 cup all-purpose flour

• 2/3 cup (packed) light brown sugar • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

• 1/2 cup (1 stick) chilled unsalted butter, cut into pieces

ASSEMBLY: • 1 1/2 cups pecans

• 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature • 2 1/4 pounds peaches (about 7 medium), cut into 1/2” wedges

• 1/3 cup (packed) light brown sugar • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

• 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

TO MAKE CRISP TOPPING: 1. Whisk flour, brown sugar, and salt in a medium bowl. Rub in butter with your fingers until clumps form and no dry spots remain. ASSEMBLY: 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Toast pecans on a rimmed baking sheet, tossing once, until slightly darkened in color, 8–10 minutes. Let cool, then coarsely chop. 2. Smear bottom and sides of a 10” cast-iron skillet with butter. Northwestern University women’s lacrosse midfielder Brennan Dwyer left her painting of a pink castle out to dry in the Dwyer house in Winnetka last month. Her father, Loyola Academy girls lacrosse coach John Dwyer, noticed it. And praised it. “She took up painting again; she’s very good at it,” John Dwyer says, adding he and his wife, Dinny, and Brennan have found plenty of time to watch movies and engage in Wii and Uno and Clue battles at home since mid-March. Brennan Dwyer has been home for weeks because the pandemic halted NU’s on-campus classes and scrubbed her promising junior lacrosse season on March 13. Her take, on her painting? “My dad was impressed?” asks Brennan, a 2017 Loyola Academy graduate and four-time Illinois High School Women’s Lacrosse Association state champion and US Lacrosse First Team AllAmerican. “He shouldn’t have been. That painting didn’t require any skill; it was a fill-in-theblank painting.” Dwyer’s third lacrosse season with the Wildcats was a Rembrandt-in-the-making one before it ended, abruptly, after seven games. An Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Third Team All-American for an NCAA Final Four team in 2019, the 5-foot-5 Dwyer ranked third in the nation this spring with 9.86 draw controls per game and set a program record with 21 draw controls (fourth all-time, in NCAA history) in a 28-12 defeat of visiting Arizona State University on February 16. “Definitely a shock, at the beginning,” Dwyer, 21, says of learning the fate of her team’s 2020 season. “It took a while for it to sink in for me and for my teammates, though we all knew it was a possibility. “We’re all pretty sad.” NU’s women’s lacrosse team was supposed to board a plane to Nashville, Tennessee, for a game against Big Ten foe Penn State on March 13. Time of departure got pushed back more than once. “We talked about driving instead,” Dwyer says. But travel talk ended when Northwestern University Athletic Director Jim Phillips informed the reigning Big Ten Tournament championship team, via email, that it would not get to compete in another game this spring. NU would have to accept a 4-3 record as a final record, against a highly challenging schedule. “Your first thoughts, right away, are healthrelated,” says John Dwyer, whose daughter Kathleen gave birth to a daughter (his 16th grandchild) on April 2. “The health of your family, of your friends, of everybody. People are getting sick. People are dying. What we’re all going through right now, it deepens your faith. Our country is showing its resiliency again in the face of adversity, and I admire the approach our medical com-

munity and our country’s businesses are taking. “This COVID-19 virus … it’s tricky,” he adds. “We’re so used to attacking something to defeat it. But it’s hard to do that when so many of us have to stay home. Brennan and her teammates are strong, committed to staying together and supporting each other. It’s a pretty driven group of athletes.”

Coach Dwyer’s athletes at Loyola Academy were scheduled on April 2 to board a plane for Washington, D.C., for a multi-game trip against several of the nation’s best prep girls lacrosse squads. They stayed home instead. The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) had suspended all sports activities through April 30. May 1 is the target date for the return of spring

“I must commend the IHSA for giving us hope,” John Dwyer says. “Our kids—they’re hopeful and working out on their own.” Brennan Dwyer, meanwhile, is pulling for any kind of Ramblers girls lacrosse season this spring, especially when she thinks of Loyola Academy’s seniors. “Girls lacrosse at Loyola Academy is such a special thing,” says Dwyer, who averaged 10.1 draw controls as a senior at the Wilmette school and amassed 395 goals, 239 assists, 276 groundball controls, and 876 draw controls in her prep career. “I felt honored to be a part of it every season. My hope is, if the season does get canceled, the seniors will look back and know they had three years to make and develop connections with teammates that they’ll never forget.” A communications major and business minor, Dwyer earned Big Ten All-Academic honors last spring and followed that up with Dean’s List numbers (3.9 and 4.0 grade-point averages in the fall and winter, respectively) as a junior. The school’s spring quarter started on April 6. Nearly a week earlier, Dwyer had received Media Third Team All-America honors from Inside Lacrosse. Dwyer will have to settle for resorting to her classroom ‘A’ game only in the spring and summer quarters. “My teammates and I will go into next season with a different view,” Dwyer predicts. “We’ll be grateful, more than ever, to play the sport we love.” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

The basketball point guard/volleyball setter in Nicole “Nikki” Fernandez continues to pace and galvanize others, decades after she “quarterbacked” teams of hoopsters and spikers at St. Francis Academy in Pittsburgh. Her uniformed teammates today? More than a thousand nurses at NorthShore University HealthSystem’s Evanston Hospital. Fernandez, 50, serves the hospital as senior vice president of nursing and clinical operations. Leadership in the medical field is crucial, especially since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Fernandez, a registered nurse and a transformational leader, joins the hospital’s front line unblinkingly and resolutely each day. “I learned and developed many leadership skills in sports,” says Fernandez, a Winnetka resident— with husband John, an orthopedic surgeon—for nearly 10 years and the mother of their three sons: Johnny Maximo, 17, Enzo Luciano, 16, and Rocco Antonio, 14. “I’m still 5-foot-1, by the way. I relate to people in the trenches, do my best to inspire and motivate them. A leader must have a vision, must be able to communicate effectively. A leader helps followers become leaders themselves. “COVID-19 is out there; it’s been difficult, definitely, for us and so many others,” she adds. “But my NorthShore team has been awesome these past few weeks, providing excellent care each and every day. Our senior leadership team truly has been phenomenal and has provided us with exactly what we need to do our jobs. Members of my team continue to inspire me. I find myself thanking them, constantly. You should see and hear them with their patients and their patients’ families. They’re listening, showing compassion and kindness, and they’re sharing their knowledge.” Thomas Joseph Torchia ranked first in knowledge of math among his household’s members in the 1980s. That certainly came in handy for his middle daughter, Nikki, whose weeklong stay in a hospital for a surgical procedure (at age 16) cemented her aspiration to ace all math course en route to becoming a nurse. “I’m a nurse because of my father,” Fernandez says, adding her father was a schoolteacher, a basketball coach, and a basketball/football referee. “He had nothing but a positive influence on me. And there wasn’t a thing he wouldn’t do for my sisters [Gina Marie and Catherine Ann] and me. He didn’t just help me with math; he also showed me the importance of hard work and discipline, qualities that were also important to my mother [Mary Catherine] when she raised us.” Fear gripped Nikki on Day 1 of that hospital

stay. But that abated gradually and later rapidly, thanks to the warmth and professionalism of her nurses.

“The nurses,” she recalls, “made me feel safe. They were smart. They took care of me. I’ll never forget how well they treated me and how comfortable they made me feel.” Before attending Carlow College in Pittsburgh, Fernandez continued her studies and basketball career at Community College of Allegheny County, also in Pittsburgh. Fernandez and a teammate picked a bad day to cut a philosophy class during a college hoops season. The point guard who had averaged between six and eight steals per game for St. Francis Academy as a senior thought she’d be able to get away with an academic no-no. Their coach got wind of the absences and made the pair run sprints in practice for two-and-a-half hours. “My father had decided to visit me that day, and there he was, sitting in the gym bleachers by himself,” Fernandez says. “He sat there for the entire practice. Then he got up and left, without saying a word. “I never cut another class.” Nikki met her future husband, John, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical center. John Fernandez, the man? “My hero,” says Nikki Fernandez, who will celebrate 24 years of marriage with John next month. “He’s the kindest, gentlest, smartest man I know. He also makes me laugh. I’m thankful he’s in my life. He is a great father to our three sons.” The husband and wife like to interrupt the utensils-clanking-plates soundtrack at the dinner table by playing “Roses and Thorns” with their sons. “We’ll ask them, ‘What was great about your day today?’” the mother says. “We’ll also ask them, ‘What wasn’t so great about it?’ And, ‘What do you plan to do about that?’ We teach our kids to pay it forward; we love it when they do something nice for someone else. I’m probably exactly like my dad was as a parent—tough but fair. I respect our children, and I expect them to respect me. Everything

should be balanced, right? “Being a mom is wonderful,” she adds. “My kids are my life.” It has been nearly a month since Gov. J.B.

We come together two to three times a day to talk, to listen, and to offer support. The biggest part of my job is to be there for my team. I love what I do.

Pritzker delivered his stay-at-home order. Life changed for many. But doctors and nurses and lab personnel and respiratory therapists and patient care technicians and other selfless, courageous folks in the medical field have continued to wake up, don work garb, commute, park, enter hospitals, and embrace their calling. Another day, another opportunity to comfort— and heal. “Members of our entire care team huddle,” says Fernandez, sounding like a basketball squad’s captain determined to engineer a rally from a halftime deficit. “We come together two to three three times a day to talk, to listen, and to offer support. The biggest part of my job is to be there for my team. “I love what I do.” Rounds of genuine and generous support from the community have heartened Fernandez and her colleagues at Evanston Hospital. Bright posters, featuring messages of thanks and appreciation, greet the workers outside each morning. Local residents buy and deliver meals for medical staffers at lunchtime and dinnertime. “Businesses, all kinds of businesses, have been showing tremendous support for us. We feel it. It’s powerful. Every day is a ‘wow’ day.” In early February, Fernandez and her family endured a day of sorrow. Husband/Dad/Teacher/ Coach/Mentor Thomas Joseph Torchia died in Pittsburgh, after a three-and-a-half week battle with lymphoma. He was 81. “I watched a team of nurses take good care of my father, from beginning to end,” Nikki says. “I was so impressed. It made me proud to be a nurse, which is the feeling I have as I watch and admire the NorthShore nurses each and every day.”
