Our Music Institute touts its ‘Music connects people’ mantra

If you’re looking for an excuse to go out next Thursday night, check out Short Story Theatre at Miramar Bistro in Highwood. Founded in 2012, the organization is dedicated to promoting storytelling as a vibrant, contemporary art form. The four pieces presented at 7:30 p.m. on February 28 are warm, wise, and wonderful true stories told by people from the North Shore and Chicago. In “I’ve Become My Father,” Scott Woldman of Wilmette tells a story about drugs, violence, love, and the hope that the circle of life is not so circular. Rino Liberatore, also of Wilmette, recalls the big snowfall of ’67 and how it affected his job as a newsboy in his story “Hello, Work World.” Holly Birnbaum of Chicago shows how a baby boy and a man of a certain age walked Continued on PG 10

Northfield-based Our Music Institute (OMI) is part old school, part new school. It’s old school because it offers traditional group and one-on-one music lessons for all ages and experience levels. It’s new school for a couple of reasons—it’s, well, new,

having just opened in the Chase building at 400 Central Avenue, and it boasts a contemporary curriculum of classes and lessons for DJs, EDM production and studio recording. “The mission is simple: Our community, our education, our music,” OMI Director Michael Poupko, also a music teacher, notes. “Music connects people, but in this modern age that oftentimes gets lost.”

Take the internet (please), he reflects. “You can watch an instructional video on YouTube,” Poupko says, “but it’s not the same as personal hands-on instruction. Poupko, who for eight years was the owner and director of the North Shore Music Institute, has assembled a team of instructors with impressive professional credentials. Poupko has been playing guitar professionally since he was 18. As a member of the orchestra for the interactive theater production Tony & Tina’s Wedding, he met his future wife, who played keyboards. Voice teacher Mike Harvey has sung background on albums by Diana Ross and Bette Midler, performed live with Stevie Wonder, and he appeared on Saturday Night Live. Percussionist Larry Beers is a co-founder of Mucca Pazza, the celebrated circus punk marching band. “Our instructors love playing music, but it is important to them to teach; they want to give back,” Poupko says. “I’ve been teaching for almost 20 years. Music has taken me all over the world. Almost every great experience in my life has been brought to me by music. “I want to share that.” In addition to booking live music, OMI offers programs and classes for a wide range of ages. Music Together is a family music class for infants to 5-year-olds with a parent or guardian. Let’s Play, for kindergarteners-third graders, is a general music class. A DJ School class is in the works. Individual lessons for voice, piano, guitar, ukulele, wind instruments, and percussion, as well as audition prep, are offered in 30- 45- and 60-minute sessions. In-home or office lessons are offered to Glencoe, Glenview, Kenilworth, Northbrook, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka residents. One-on-one beats, recording and songwriting classes are also available. “It’s meeting a need,” Poupko insists. “I want to offer classes I wish I could have had growing up.” Another need, Poupko notes, has come from retirees. “They want a creative outlet, and they want to

It’s not a play, it’s a musical, it’s … ‘Cancerman’ Poignant show about sensitive topic hits right notes

musical] plays might not, although they can be very emotional,” he says. “The addition of music just gets to me.” Allen wrote his first musical for a freshman class production in college. But writing plays, he allows, didn’t make economic sense to him. “I had to earn a living,” he says. Allen was a writer and editor for the Tribune for 23 years, retiring in 2002. Prior to that, from 197886, he wrote theater reviews for the alt-weekly Chicago Reader. He moved to Evanston in 1980. In March 1984 his first professional musical premiered. “It was a thrill, but also a disaster,” he says. “I had invited a lot of people, but there was a freak snowstorm and practically no one showed up.” He has enjoyed a better track record since becoming an ardent playwright. His musical Muffins, set in a struggling café, won Best Music honors at the MCL Theatre’s Premier Premieres festival in 2016. The Anarchist Girl was a winner in the 2014 Academy of New Theatre/ New Musicals Inc. International Search for New Musicals and was performed at the 2015 Stages Festival in Los Angeles.

Allen considers the songs in Cancerman to be the best he’s written, and he’s “incredibly excited” by the cast, which includes Ana Maria Alvarez, Emi Lee Frantz, Sarah Hayes, Bill Kavanagh, John Leen, Shaina Summerville, and Timothy Sullivan. He is also buoyed by the surge in popularity of movie musicals, such as La La Land, and the crossover popularity of such shows as Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen. The recent spate of musicals produced for television, most recently Jesus Christ Superstar and Rent, is creating a new audience for musicals, he gushes. As for Cancerman, Allen acknowledges that it deals with a dark, difficult subject, but it’s also warm and funny. Perhaps he could tweak the title to something more audience-friendly? There have been discussions about this, he says. “My director,” Allen adds, “thinks I should call it ‘Fiddler on the Roof.’ ” The final show of the Cancerman run at the Chicago Musical Theatre Festival is Feb. 24, 3 p.m., at the Edge Theater, 5451 N. ‘FRACTURED FOLLIES’ TALES’ SURE TO BE WHOLE LOTTA FUN WCH hosts Village Follies’ skits with twists BY LIBBY ELLIOTT THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

North Shore youngsters of all ages and abilities have myriad opportunities to perform in amateur theatrical productions, whether it be through schools, community centers or acting studios. Those outlets, sadly, all but disappear when kids transition from the world of make-believe to adulthood—at which point live theater becomes largely the domain of trained, professional actors. But life is a cabaret for the determinedly funloving members of the Village Follies, a thriving company of grown-up, community thespians currently enjoying every minute of rehearsals for its 2019 variety show, Fractured Follies’ Tales. It is set to run and draw roars of laughter at the Winnetka Community House (WCH) March 8-9 and March 14-16. For the past 40 years, the Village Follies has provided an escape for suburban adults of wideranging ages and theatrical abilities, while simultaneously raising nearly $15,000 to support the WCH, an educational, cultural, and recreational hub on the North Shore. Working collaboratively each winter, this troupe of 35-40 adults writes an original variety show that’s reportedly as fun for the performers as it is for the audience. Laura Chaveriat and her husband, Dave Impey— both trained singers—have participated in Village Follies productions for more than a decade. “We auditioned 13 years ago and had a blast,” recalls Chaveriat, a Wilmette resident who works in educational publishing. “It’s one of the few amateur adult theater companies in the area, which is why it draws from so many communities.”

Cast members include residents from as close as Winnetka, Northfield, and Kenilworth and as far away as Arlington Heights, Lake Zurich, and Fox Lake. Each December, the Village Follies holds no-cut, open auditions for an annual variety show, remaining committed to finding suitable roles for all participants, regardless of experience. “Many of us are performers on the side, so we’re a mixture of professionals, semi-professionals, and

The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. “It’s a collection of fairy tales retold with an irreverent, satirical twist,” Kolin Leonard, a Follies co-producer, says. Comprised of 30 rapid-fire musical comedy skits lasting roughly three minutes each, Fractured Follies’ Tales opens with an all-cast rendition of the song “Story of My Life,” from Shrek the Musical, and later reimagines the story of Little Red Riding Hood in the skit “Big Bad Little Red.” The skit “Mission Impandable” presents a team of pandas—under contract to The Three Bears—that breaks into Goldilocks’ home, seeking revenge, while other musical numbers include creatively “fractured” interpretations of Beauty and the Beast, Rumpelstiltskin and Rapunzel. The show’s quick succession of skits will accelerate this year with the use of a digital backdrop rather than traditional sets, a technique that’s still relatively new to Follies productions. “We’ll be segueing between scenes on stage,” Leonard says. “It moves quickly.” Seating at each Fractured Follies’ Tales performance begins at 7:30 p.m. and feature Ravinia-style seating; audience members bring their picnic baskets filled with food, dine at communal tables, and order beverages from a cash bar. And while Village Follies productions have a large and loyal following (Saturday shows frequently sell out), cast members say the atmosphere on opening night is always relaxed, low-key, and highly entertaining. “As with all Follies productions, we’ll be stretching boundaries and having fun,” Leonard says.

You have to hand it to Ron Onesti, the unabashedly proud Italian-American concert producer who operates the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles. The man’s got courage—and likely a steady stream of marinara running through his veins. At a time when eating carbs, in some circles, can be as perilous as a plate of blowfish, some might have fretted about anchoring a pricy new downtown Evanston concert venue with a restaurant devoted to Italy’s favorite pillow-shaped starch bomb: the humble but versatile raviolo. Not Ron. Should the name of his new oldschool trattoria—Rock ‘N Ravioli—fail to tip you off that he believes the days of South Beach Diet are numbered, note the restaurant’s portrait gallery, which depicts various rock stars—Dean Martin, Kiss, Frank Sinatra—gorging on one ragu or another. Technically, you’ll find a couple carb-free outliers here—perhaps the Tayla Shtreet sawsage n peppuz appetizer or a roasted veggie pizza on cauliflower crust—but if you’re not going to eat

like you’re saddling up to Uncle Vito’s table, you’ve got the wrong place. There are more than a dozen raviolis here, many of which the waitstaff informed us were adapted from Onesti’s own recipes. Although there may be a market somewhere for coconut-topped Caribbean shrimp ravioli in a Malibu rum sauce, it ain’t here. Surprisingly, the best dumplings on the list happen to be the American-Italian options, with an accent on the American. Can’t go wrong with the short-rib stuffed ravioli wading in a thick brown gravy that tastes like Grandma’s pot roast. Or the house’s signature Maine lobster ravioli—striped like a pink zebra—which has a New Jersey-meets-thecoast-of-Maine swagger to it. In typical Italian style, you’re going to get giant platters filled from edge to edge. But should you want a side, try Ron’s “world famous” meatballs, which stick just close enough to tradition— spongy, baseball-sized, with a nice garlicky tomato sauce—to earn a nod. Otherwise, there are plenty of sandwiches and pastas, each named—with tongue firmly planted in cheek—after rock stars or crooners. Although we were tempted to take a run at the Meatloaf pizza (maple-cured bacon, sausage, pepperoni) or

the Fleetwood Mac Anna Cheeza (cheese-smothe re d ditalini pasta), we played things safe by ordering the Pat Benatar: a simple but effective play on a Margherita pizza with fresh mozzarella and grenades of acidic cherry tomatoes. But in the end, we were most impressed with the house’s simple, maple-glazed salmon set in beurre blanc with a side of veggie salad, which was trumped only by a genuinely refreshing frozen lemoncello gelato and cream parfait for dessert, which spindles together the bittersweet chill of a lemon ice with the creaminess of a Cool Whip sundae. Conventional? Certainly not, but this much

The year 1979 will be on the minds of Highland Park High School’s boys swimming and diving team members at this weekend’s sectional in the home water. That was when a Giants boys crew last won a sectional championship. “It should be fun and exciting, competing at our place with a good chance to win a big meet,” HPHS coach Tim Sirois said last weekend, adding other contending schools in the 15-team field

include Mundelein, Warren Township and Deerfield high schools. The year 1968 surfaced at the Central Suburban League North Meet at Vernon Hills High School on February 9. Giants senior Andrew Vorobev supplanted the meet mark in the 100-yard butterfly—a record (52.5) that had stood for 51 years. You remember ’68, among the most tumultuous years in U.S. history. But the year ended on a feel-good note, three NASA astronauts becoming the first humans to orbit the moon. Vorobev clocked a 52.03 in the 100 fly last weekend. “My dad [50-year-old Vlad],” a smiling Vorobev noted, “is almost as old [as the life of the previous record in the event].” Winning never gets old. Highland Park’s other victor at the CSL North Meet was junior Tobe Obochi, who sped to a 21.86 in the 50 freestyle, a time in the neighborhood of his personal-best 21.79. But he, like Vorobev, wasn’t fully tapered for the six-team gathering. A league or conference meet in swimming is unique. Each season many competitors on each team enter fully tapered since the meet is their last meet. The league or conference meet is essentially their “state meet”. The top racers on each team, meanwhile, usually arrive exhausted, partially rested, with their sights set on peaking at either a sectional meet or the state meet. Vorobev lifted weights last week. Hard. He didn’t take it easy in the pool, either. His taper?

Notable: Three former Giants entrants owned CSL North Meet records before last weekend’s division meet at VHHS. Two of the marks fell, but Levy Nathan’s 1:40.91 in the 200 free (set in 2016) remained intact. Glenbrook North’s 200 medley relay, with a time of 1:36.59, bettered HP’s 1:36.77, established in ’16, and Glenbrook North’s Ryan Purdy won the 100 back in 50.88 to take down Ben Laedlein’s 53.16, achieved five years ago. … Obochi, on his brother, eighth-grader Kevin: “He thinks he’s better at video games than I am. He’s quieter than I am. As for swimming, he’s good, very good. His times in high school will be faster than mine.”

“About 10 percent,” he said last weekend. That record he set in the fly was actually slower than his seed time—and school-record time—of 51.43. Look for that time to drop this weekend (FEBRUARY 23) at the sectional meet and then drop some more at the state meet (February 22-23, at New Trier HS). Sirois’ club totaled 339 points last weekend, finishing runner-up to Glenbrook North (424) and well ahead of third-place Deerfield (266). Vorobev and Obochi each motored to a runner-up showing, with Vorobev going 52.83 in the 100 backstroke and Obochi touching in 1:00.87 in the 100 breaststroke. The pair joined Richard Heller and Alex Gordon to claim runner-up honors in the 200 medley relay (1:38.32) and collaborated with Bora Hopali and Konrad Schmid for the silver in the 400 free relay (3:17.87). “Coach Sirois tells us to daydream about swimming, about our races … to imagine how we’d execute during a race,” the Northwestern University-bound Schmid said after a dual with visiting

New Trier on February 1, when his personal-best time of 2:02.37 topped the 200 IM field in a 107-79 loss. Forgive the swimmers if you happen to catch them sporting faraway looks and bumping unintentionally into lockers inside HPHS. “If they’re daydreaming at school,” Sirois said, “it’s best that it’s about swimming, right?” Reality for Sirois was his 200 free relay’s electric time of 1:28.72, a program record set against NT’s Trevians earlier this month. Obochi, Ryan Tran, Gordon and Vorobev served as the unit’s legs. The 6-foot-2, 160-pound-ish Obochi will compete in all three relays at this weekend’s sectional. Each of the Giants’ other two quartets (200 medley, 400 free) has a realistic shot at lowering a school record before the end of the month. “Seeing our relays come together like they have has been good to see,” Obochi said. “All of us have that relay-team mentality you have to have. I like that it’s not all on me; all the guys are there to

He runs around and around at one end of a soccer pitch before every New Trier High School varsity girls soccer match in the springtime, camping under corner kicks, jumping to head soccer balls toward a goalkeeper, sweating, barking something encouraging to one Trevian or smiling playfully at another—the teen he had just burned. Jim Burnside, 6-foot-3 and 51 years old going on a saucer-eyed 15, is the hustling, fun-loving man among Trevians in the warm-up session. The girls team’s coach? Also Burnside, forever boyish and a 1986 NTHS graduate. “I’ve fallen a few times, doing that,” the former New Trier and DePauw (Indiana) University soccer goalkeeper says from a booth seat at Ridgeview Grill in Wilmette, his hometown today and back in the day. “I’ve gotten hurt, yes. One time I remember thinking, That ground used to be a lot softer.” Why, Jim, why? Why risk tearing a hamstring or suffering a high ankle sprain that might not heal fully until 2022? “It’s the summer camp counselor in me; I don’t think he’ll ever leave,” admits a grinning Burnside,

a summer camper at Camp Highlands in Sayner, Wisconsin, for nine years and a camp counselor there for six more. “My experiences at camps were huge. Had quite an impact on me, and they taught me a lot.” Burnside—in his 26th year at New Trier, the last 22 as the school’s extraordinarily successful varsity girls soccer coach—taught biology, mostly AP bio, at NTHS for 24 years before hanging up his lab coat and boxing up his microscopes to become assistant athletic director under NTHS AD Augie Fontanetta at the start of the 2017-18 academic year. The son of Suzette and Pete Burnside, a lefthanded pitcher who appeared in nearly 200 Major League Baseball games from 1955-63, Jim has guided six NTHS girls soccer clubs to state championships, including three straight (2014-16), during which his defenders and goalkeepers recorded 21 straight postseason shutouts. Twenty-one. In. A. Row. Go ahead, read that again and attempt to grasp such an incredulous streak. Two coaches associations named Burnside National High School Coach of the Year in 2004. He

was the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association (IHSSCA) Coach of the Year in 2015 and an IHSSCA Hall of Fame inductee two years later. His overall, not-a-typo record: 508-78-32, or a marvelous season average of 23-4-1. His ’03 and ’04 squads went a combined 58-0-2, his ’14-’16 editions an aggregate 84-5-2. “I feel fortunate, will always feel fortunate, to be a part of our girls soccer program at New Trier,” says Burnside, whose previous two teams earned state runner-up honors. “The kids … the kids make this happen, produce all the success. They’re great kids, hardworking kids, talented kids. What I’ve stressed for years is something I say nonstop, and that is, ‘Serious fun.’ I applied that approach in the classroom, too. If you’re not having fun while striving hard for a win in a sport or for an ‘A’ in class, you shouldn’t be doing it. As a coach or as a teacher, I like to start out tough, end up fun. “Our soccer practices, they’re pretty intense at times,” he adds ahead of the arrival of his loaded omelet, crispy hash browns and whole wheat toast. “There’s structure in each, purpose. But while we’re cr ushing e a c h other in practice, we’re a l s o having f u n along t h e way.” Fun s t o r y, funny story: Burnside f i r s t noticed his future wife, Annie, at— where else?—a summer camp. He was a counselor, she a lodge girl. Both were DePauw students. Their eyes met in the camp’s dining hall. Love at first … bite? Jim played it cool at first. “I didn’t want to seem too eager,” he recalls. Jim eventually disarmed the Virginia native

with his sense of humor, launching a six-year courtship. “Making her laugh was all I had going for me,” he says. “My looks? Not good.” He flew to Virginia to ask Annie’s father for Annie’s hand in marriage. The plan was to stay in Virginia for two days and then get on with the business of proposing. Burnside changed his flight home after two days in Virginia. He changed it again two days later. A frequent flight changer program did not exist, so, finally, on Day 5 of his extended visit, Burnside summoned up the courage to ask for Annie’s hand. He received permission. Jim and Annie have three children— Aidenn, 22, named after a 16-acre lake in Oneida County, Wisconsin; Piper, 20; and Pete, an 18-year-old senior who shoots basketballs and pitches baseballs for varsity teams at NTHS. Annie Burnside, a former teacher, is an award-winning author. Her book Soul to Soul Parenting, published by Deadwood, Oregon-based Wyatt-MacKenzie in 2010, is a guide to raising a spiritually conscious family. She also wrote From Role to Soul: 15 Shifts on the Awakening Journey (2014). “My wife is kind and insightful, a woman who fully understands the importance of connecting with people, of interacting with people,” Burnside says. “She’s my role model, and I attribute a huge amount of my success in coaching to her. “The major turning point in my life? That’s easy. That’s clear. It was meeting Annie.” Annie’s husband cherishes time with his family. Any time, anywhere. If it’s outdoors, all the better. Got a hankering for pork shoulder or smoked salmon? Jim’s your man, your cook, your tongs-toting maestro over his Green Egg Smoker. His favorite all-time purchase, to date, is his Ford F-150 pickup truck. Among his many endearing traits? Self-deprecation. “I can’t believe you want to write about me,” a head-shaking, chuckling Burnside says. “Seriously, why me? Why are you interviewing me? You’re scraping around at the bottom of the barrel, right? You must be. I’m not a smart guy. I’m just a guy who tries to simplify things for others; I especially liked doing that for my biology students, either with a visual or by introducing something to them that I thought would make them laugh. I don’t set a lot of rules, but I’m a rules follower. “My simple message to my soccer players each season is, ‘Be on time, clean up after yourself, be a good teammate, be a good person.’ ” Unsaid: Be aware, be very aware, of a determined coach soaring and tilting to greet a corner kick with his forehead in pre-match minutes.
