Dr. Kuan Su of Acupuncture North Clinic in Northfield uses the ancient practice of acupuncture to help his patients relieve pain and stress.

Dr. Kuan Su’s journey to becoming a doctor specializing in acupuncture and alternative medicine was a very personal one.

More than 10 years ago, his wife at the time was pregnant with their son and developed gestational diabetes. She sought care through traditional medical treatments but no solutions to her condition emerged. Eventually, she was told she would need daily insulin shots.

Not satisfied with that remedy, she eventually turned to acupuncture. The leg swelling she suffered due to the gestational diabetes was reduced by about 50 percent with a single treatment, and Su, then a sales and recruiting specialist, knew he wanted to switch careers.

“I was in the treatment room with her, and I was stunned.

I thought, ‘I have to do this instead. It’s super exciting’,” he explains. “Three months went by, our son was born, and we were very happy about it.”

Shortly thereafter, Su enrolled in a program at Pacific College of Health and Science in downtown Chicago. After his first few classes, he never looked back. The specialties he gravitated toward were pain and stress management, neuropathy, mental health issues, and other conditions such as insomnia and erectile dysfunction.

“Those were the major items that stuck out to me, especially when I was an intern treating patients,” he says. “Those are the areas I saw a lot of great results.”

Su likes to say that what he practices is complementary alternative medicine, with the emphasis on complementary.

He doesn’t aim to replace traditional medical treatments, but to offer alternatives for those who have been unsatisfied with standard medical regimens or for those who are currently undergoing treatments that require additional support.

“A story I hear often is that patients will come to me, and they’ve already seen three specialists, tried an array of treatments and medication as well as supplements, and nothing has really worked,” he says. “I’m kind of their last hope.”

He also treats patients who have a condition where surgery has been recommended but they want to explore other options. Some patients come in for preventative reasons and others are just frustrated with the route they’ve already taken.

A big chunk of Su’s patient base is being treated for neuropathy—a numbness in the hands, feet, or limbs resulting from muscle strain, injury, diabetes, and an array of other causes.

Through his acupuncture practice, Dr. Kuan Su specializes in alleviating pain and helping patients manage stress.

“I see a lot of those patients because those tend to be severe and pretty chronic,” he says. “I see a lot of chronic pain, like post-op recovery, sciatica, temporomandibular joint disorder, or migraines where people have been suffering for way too long.”

Su also focuses his practice on health issues that are exclusive to men. “There are a lot of wonderful clinics in the Chicago area that treat women’s infertility,’ he explains, “but not a lot that treat men’s fertility issues like erectile dysfunc-

tion and prostatitis.”

However, it’s not just what happens in the treatment room that matters. Patients can also do plenty on their own.

“I give people recommendations what to do in between visits to expedite their recovery,” he adds.

Chris Nowinski isn’t a person who scares easily. He was a standout football player at John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights and took his gridiron skills to college, where he played defensive tackle for Harvard and won All-Ivy honors. As Chris Harvard in the WWE, he didn’t bat an eye before jumping into the wrestling ring, flying off ropes, and dodging (most of the time) chairs being swung at him.

But these days Nowinski finds himself preoccupied by worries that jar him as much as the hits he took over so many years. He’s afraid about how often our kids are getting hit in the head while playing the sports that had meant so much to him in his youth. He fears what will happen to these kids, their families, and their friends if we don’t accelerate research efforts and change how we play sports.

After being sidelined from his WWE career by a serious concussion in 2003, Nowinski became an advocate for concussion awareness and prevention. He earned his doctorate in behavioral neuroscience and co-founded the Concussion Legacy Foundation with Dr. Robert Cantu to promote safer sports and safer athletes and an end to chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head impacts (CTE). The nonprofit organization collaborates with the Boston University CTE Center in research, and together with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs they founded the VA-BUCLF Brain Bank, the preeminent CTE resource in the world.

case of a teenage football player diagnosed with advanced CTE. The 18-year-old from Missouri, who began playing tackle football in third grade, exhibited stage 2 of CTE’s four stages. Before he died by suicide, the young player asked his family to donate his brain to research, and he spoke openly about the concussions he’d suffered in football and how bad they made him feel. Although research didn’t positively correlate the symptoms that led to his death with CTE, research is clear that football can cause CTE. “We need to recognize that children’s brains are fragile and that there are only so many hits they can take before the risk of a life-altering concussion or developing CTE comes into play,” says Nowinski. He points out that we’re living in an era quite different from the one he experienced 30-plus years ago. Kids are now playing longer seasons, more games, more tournaments, and playing contact sports almost year-round. It is, in some ways, an ongoing experiment simply because this level of play hasn’t happened before.

Nowinski points to the largest CTE study ever, which included over 600 football players.

It showed that more than 75 percent of those who played 10 or more years of football had

CTE. While the researchers don’t suggest this accurately reflects risk for everyone who played 10 or more years since families donate the brains of loved ones who had neurological symptoms, Nowinski says it is concerning how frequently CTE is diagnosed in this population.

“There’s no excuse in 2024 for kids to be exposed to sports where they get hit in the head hundreds of times a year now that it’s proven that it causes CTE in some of them,” he says.

A Complicated Problem, But Some of the Answers Are Simple Of course, sports are popular because we love them—we love playing them, watching them, and it’s fun to see our kids play the sports we loved to play when we were young. It’s a complex issue but according to Nowinski, there is an easy precaution. “The simple advice is don’t let your kid get hit in the head repetitively until they’re at least 14.”

The reasons for the age delay, Nowinski explains, are threefold: “First, the science is extremely clear on cumulative exposure. So, starting later is minimizing the number of years. Number two is brain development. Your brain is going through magical changes when you convert from a child to an adolescent,

and head trauma could negatively impact that maturation process. And the third reason is informed consent and your ability to train a child to do anything safely. We know from every aspect of public health that the primary way to prevent a child from getting hurt can’t be asking the child to follow rules, especially as complicated as ramming a moving person or [heading a] moving ball.”

Nowinski speaks positively about how USA Hockey raised the age for body checking and how USA Lacrosse partners with his organization’s Team Up Against Concussions program, which uses a bystander intervention model to deliver a straightforward message to the team: a teammate with a concussion needs your help and should receive immediate medical attention. “[As a teammate], you may be the only one who sees it,” Nowinski says. “You may be the only one they confess to.” So, the system is put in place for players to help each other from the very start of the season, along with a “team captain” to lead the initiative. It’s about creating the environment for change.

Even with these changes, Nowinski emphasizes that there is still room for improved safety measures. For example, in 2015 his organization successfully advocated to raise the age to head the ball in soccer. To Nowinski’s disappointment, the age was only raised to 11. “There’s just no reason to start at 11,” he argues.

He’s a big advocate of kids only playing flag football before high school. “Flag before 14 is the future,” he says. “You get all the benefits.

You just don’t get the mileage on your brain and the mileage on your body.”

Nowinski explains the rationale that supports his viewpoint: “If you don’t play football until 14, and 93 percent of football players will never play after 18, we should be able to make CTE rare in people who play four years of football.”

While there is no known cure for CTE, treatment is available for many symptoms of the disease. The Concussion Legacy Foundation HelpLine is available to provide personalized support for any current or former athletes who are concerned about repetitive head trauma and are looking for help. “[We can provide] medical referrals, support groups, one-on-one support, and education on what they’re going through so that they know that there are thousands of people who’ve been in that situation who’ve gotten better.”

The benefits of youth sports have been well documented for years. Yet, there’s new documentation for the risks as well. Nowinski’s life goal is to keep the scales squarely tilted in favor of the benefits.

Trial in the Delta: The Murder of Emmett Till, a film of a play staged by Chicago’s Collaboraction Theatre Company, will debut next week at Wayfarer Theaters.

While the lynching of Emmett Till is well known as the spark that fueled the civil rights movement, what is less known is the story of the trial that sought to bring his murderers, J.W. Milan and Roy Bryant, to justice.

Till’s murder took place in 1955 but it wasn’t until 50 years later, when a transcript of the trial—unearthed by a graduate student working on a paper about the lynching—that the full story of Emmett Till and the injustice that occurred in his murder’s aftermath could be told.

That story, in film form, is coming to Wayfarer Theaters in Highland Park on February 22.

The Trial of Emmet Till film was conceived and produced by Collaboraction Theatre, a Chicago-based group that has championed works that generate dialogue on important social issues since 1996. Its productions are presented in venues throughout the Chicago area.

An original live staging of Trial in the Delta, the film’s dialogue is drawn directly from the transcript of The State of Mississippi vs.

Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam. Collaboraction obtained a copy of the transcript and two of the company’s writers, G. Riley Mills and Wille Round, adapted it for the stage.

The immersive theater experience, including audience response to the historic injustice documented on stage, was professionally filmed in 4K during a live performance last February at The DuSable Black History Museum and

staged adaptation,” said Collaboraction Artistic Director Anthony Moseley. “We are excited to be premiering this version and holding a live Crucial Conversation at Wayfarer Theaters, a unique film house aligned with our mission of positive social change.”

Moseley first acted in a Collaboraction Theatre production in 1996, and in 1999 became its Artistic Director. He says over the years the company developed its social justice mission as challenges in the city, especially related to

Soon after the original production aired, Trial in the Delta was re-staged and presented live on a minimal set, two shows only, in February 2022 at DuSable Museum. The production was expanded and more fully remounted at DuSable in February 2023, where it enjoyed a two-week run and formed the basis for the film.

Moseley says the partnership with Wayfarer Theaters in Highland Park to host the debut is an ideal pairing. Wayfarer, owned by businessman and philanthropist Steve Sarowitz, has a mission to strengthen the Highland Park community through showing films, holding community events, and promoting dialogue about important issues that affect all residents of Highland Park and the surrounding area.

“It’s a natural fit because we have very similar missions, which is to bring people together,” says Moseley, who spent his summers in Highland Park. “It’s the perfect space for us to debut this film.”

Wayfarer Theaters General Manager Clay Stamper says he’s excited to bring the film to Highland Park and to host the event.

“Having the opportunity to share this brilliant piece with the North Shore community and engage in a meaningful conversation is crucial in our mission to unite and inspire positive change through storytelling and dialogue,” he adds.

For nearly 50 years, Italy native and longtime Winnetkan Lidia Lattanzi Ragusi, 90, has served as a volunteer at the Winnetka Thrift Shop. Unlike the variety of wares inside the shop, she’s priceless.

Ever met Italian-born Lidia Lattanzi Ragusi, the 90-year-old woman who started volunteering at the Winnetka Thrift Shop around the time the movie Rocky hit the theaters in the mid-1970s?

You should.

The longtime Winnetkan is part treasure, part comedian, part storyteller extraordinaire, and all kinds of fun. She’s not as sharp as a tack; she’s sharper. She’d turn your rough day into your Best Day Ever, in a nanosecond. And her delightful, quick-witted personality could disarm the pants—and maybe even the shirt or a shoe or two—off anybody.

“My secret to living as long as I have?”

Ragusi, her eyes affixed in full-twinkle mode, says before the start of another shift at the thrift shop on Green Bay Road. “Oh, that’s easy. Just act stupid.”

Born in Nerito, a small mountain town in Italy in 1933, Ragusi—one of two smart daughters of father Battista and mother Elettra—arrived in the United States in 1946. She and her older sister, Ida, along with Elettra, spent nine seasick-ailing days on a ship with American soldiers and other post-World War II civilian passengers before reuniting with Battista in New York.

Battista had been living in California for 10 years, but he also spent time with a brother at a residence on Oak Street in Winnetka.

Battista, Elettra, and their daughters traveled via train from New York to Winnetka.

“My father wanted to return to California, but he never did after my mother insisted that we all stay in Winnetka,” recalls Ragusi, who, as a 13-year-old, started her education stateside in the sixth grade at The Skokie School in Winnetka.

“The school system here was wonderful,” Ragusi says. “It set me up to learn to speak English with a private teacher one hour a day. I remember questioning the word ‘house.’ It confused me, because it had a similar meaning to the word ‘home.’ It was okay to say, ‘I want to go home,’ but it wasn’t OK to say, ‘I want to go house.’”

Ragusi was a seventh grader for only a few months. She then got to attend classes with students closer to her age at New Trier Township High School, not far from

where she eyed her future husband, Lou Ragusi, for the first time.

It wasn’t exactly a meet-cute moment.

“He was outside, across the street from New Trier, talking with a bunch of bums,” Ragusi says.

“I remember thinking, ‘What’s that Italian boy doing with people like that?’ I was determined to straighten him out. I was going to fix him.”

Lou’s mother sent him to drop off sugar at Lidia’s house one day. The kids talked. Lidia found out Lou worked part-time as a mailman. The mailman later attended culinary school, married Lidia in 1954, and opened Capt’n Nemo’s first sub sandwich shop in Chicago (Clark Street, in 1971) before expanding to other locations, includ-

ing the one in Winnetka (38 Green Bay Road). The couple raised four children— Sandra, Michael, Steven, and Marc Lou died in 2019 at age 88.

“Lou,” Lidia says, “worked hard and was good with people.

Customers loved him.

He’d offer everybody who entered the shop a taste of soup.

I worked with him at times and got to see how much he enjoyed talking with customers and how much they enjoyed being around him.”

The safe at a Capt’n Nemo’s served, at least once, as a makeshift crib for one of the couple’s children during business hours.

“The door to the safe,” a grinning Ragusi says, “stayed open.”

Ragusi wasn’t wild about thrift shops in general when she and her husband walked by the entrance of The Winnetka Thrift Shop for the first time.

volunteer who had donated her time and energy to “get rid of the weeds” at Saints Faith, Hope & Charity Church in Winnetka and deliver flowers to the parishioners, as well as drive seniors to doctor appointments. “But I gave the Winnetka Thrift Shop a second look and I’m so glad I did. It’s a special place, I found out right away. Just like this country is, like Winnetka is. I love all of the people I get to be with at the thrift shop each week, from the volunteers to the staff. We help customers find whatever they need at a good price, “Volunteering has always been one of my big deals, probably because of my Italian upbringing. Italians … we’re into helping others.”

Revenue at the Winnetka Thrift Shop, which was established in 1912 by Mary Garretson as the Clothing Sales Committee of the Relief & Aid Society and is now managed by Jenifer Hoffman, supports the mission of the Counseling Center of the North Shore (CCNS), located right next to the shop. The Counseling Center of the North Shore— formerly known as Family Service of Winnetka-Northfield—exists primarily to provide quality mental healthcare to those who otherwise would not have access to treatment. In 2023 CCNS subsidized more than $330,000 in care for its clients.

The Winnetka Thrift Shop—“We’re Not Your Ordinary Thrift Shop,” it bills itself—helps make such subsidized care possible. Last year, 28 percent of CCNS’s revenue came from the Winnetka Thrift Shop, notes the center’s executive director, Bob Sanfilippo.

There might not be a bigger Lidia Ragusi fan than Sanfilippo.

“Lidia,” he says, “is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. So delightful.

She’s very friendly, has a great smile, and she tells the best stories, all while showing her great smile. She absolutely loves being at the thrift shop.

“Lidia once told me, ‘I should be paying you for the opportunity to volunteer here.’”
