Audrey Niffenegger has a porcupine near her pantry, two snow white doves behind the settee, and a rabbit on one of many bookshelves. Upstairs in her studio, the pages of The Other Husband, the sequel she is writing to her best-selling novel, The Time Traveler’s Wife, are neatly spread on a desk. Nearby, flat files pull out to reveal the artwork she created for her many handmade books, some featuring the very crow that looks down, sentrylike, right now. It’s clear that in addition to a penchant for diorama-worthy taxidermy, Niffenegger loves books: writing them, reading them, making them. So much so, that she is leading the charge to establish a new arts center called the Artists Book House (ABH). The organization is hosting a fundraising party from 1 to 4 p.m.February 9, at the Evanston Art Center, to kick things off. ABH’s stated mission is to be a place of diversity “where artists, writers, readers, and other thoughtful people gather to learn and create,” promoting literary art and bookmaking crafts, and connecting community through education, exhibitions, and publications. The timing is deliberate. Niffenegger cofounded the Center for Book and Paper Arts at Columbia College, which thrived for 25 years. Last year, the school shut down its Interdisciplinary Book and Paper degree program, essentially gutting the Center. ABH seeks to fill that void, maintaining Chicago’s robust role in the book arts world, but as an independent facility, that’s available to the public. Current hopes are to house ABH in the Harley Clarke mansion, former home of the Evanston Arts Center. “We’d love to make the Clarke House our home,” says Niffenegger. “It has a long history with the community, and is easily accessible to all of Chicago.” Adjacent to Evanston’s Lighthouse Beach on Sheridan Road, Clarke House has ample room for community-friendly features.

Patterned after the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, ABH will include space for artists to work, teach, and host forums, plus a library, bookshop, and café. Efforts are already underway to raise the $5 to 10 million in funding needed for the project. The proposal deadline for organizations vying to occupy the Clarke House is February 28th. If ABH wins approval, the project will be built out following plans drawn up by architect John Eifler. If not, ABH will find physical space elsewhere, using the funding to make a different building its home. For those unfamiliar with artist books, the medium is one of creating one-of-a-kind books and limited editions of artist-designed books that
may include handmade papers, creative typography, and original artwork, printed and bound by the artist into three-dimensional works. The art form also includes books that break boundaries—experimental expressions free of text, paper, or binding. Artist’s books may also be printed in larger editions, as political statements, or social commentary. All put art in the hand, taking the reader on a tactile journey experienced page-by-page, coverto-cover. Niffenegger’s first experience of art books came when she was a young girl growing up in Evanston. “In the ’60s, the Evanston Public Library used to have boxes of artists’ books that had been Continued on PG 10

The idea lodged in my brain that even I could make a book.” So Niffenegger started doing just that, making tiny books filled with poems and drawings. She studied art at Evanston Township High School and at the Evanston Arts Center. Pursuing her art degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Niffenegger kept at it, working on a book project called The Adventuress. To make it, she created 68 etchings, learned bookbinding, and how to hand-set type and print with a letterpress—processes she found “incredibly exciting.” She got an MFA at Northwestern and started a letterpress and etching studio, Greenwindow Printers, with two associates. All of this eventually coalesced into something much bigger. “There were lots of artists who met and brainstormed,” says Niffenegger, “until it was finally suggested, “‘Let’s start a big beautiful book arts center in Chicago where we can teach community classes.’” The Center of Book and Paper Arts officially launched in 1994, first in a satellite facility on Wabash, and then in Columbia’s Ludington Building. With the interdisciplinary program there now gone, the art community is working hard to make ABH a reality with the potential to take Midwest book arts to a new level.
“We always wanted the center we created to be for the community. Artists Book House is a rebirth of that initial vision,” says Niffenegger. “It’s a lovely thing, that has a lot of synchronicity. Not

just classes, but space where the community can gather around collaborative events.” “There are so many things I care about that have
disappeared in the world lately,” she concludes. “The Artist Book House gives us the opportunity to start something in the face of that, that is truly good.”

Bob Murphy’s face softens. Cracking a warm smile will do that to a visage. A co-founder of the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund (DMSF) with his brother Jim, Bob Murphy— senior vice president, real estate services, at Wintrust in Northfield—had just recalled a DMSF interview he had conducted with an eighth-grader named Charlie in the early 1990s. “He had a lot of poise,” Murphy, still smiling, says. “A lot of character. Fire in the belly … he had that, too. Charlie wanted to attend De La Salle Institute [a private school on Chicago’s South Side]. Back then we had 30 kids going for 10 scholarships. His maturity at the age of 13 was amazing. He killed the interview, just killed it. “He had a brother who was developmentally challenged, and I could tell Charlie served as a father figure to him.” Murphy went to bat for Charlie after the interview and hit a grand slam for the youngster. (The baseball is still rolling). Charlie then hit the books hard at De La Salle and continued his education at Marquette University, the Murphy brothers’ alma mater. Charlie now lives in California, working in finance. The enduring spirit of Murphy’s father, Daniel, was the seed of the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund (DMSF), established in 1989. After Daniel died in 1988, at the age of 61, Bob and his brother Jim got together with friends and family and decided

present the scholarships to them,” Bob adds. “They look like they had just won the lottery. But all of them deserve the scholarship, deserve the opportunity to become what they’re capable of becoming.” DMSF raised $1.8 million at its annual golf outing last fall, when it celebrated its 30th year of paving paths to success. Daniel Murphy caddied at Bob O’Link Golf Club in Highland Park at a young age; Bob and Jim Murphy later carried bags for members, too. Given their love of golf, it’s no wonder one of the DMSF Programs that Promote Persistence is the summer Caddie Program. (Other programs include Mentoring and Affinity, Tutoring, and College Counseling.) DMSF received a Platinum Seal of Transparency from GuideStar and a four-star charity rating from Charity Navigator. A four-star designation means DMFS exceeded industry standards and outperformed most charities in its cause. “It’s a wonderful mission with wonderful outcomes,” says DMSF Executive Director Jose Rodriguez. The Fund is Chicago’s largest high school organization that provides financial and educational support to city students. “We don’t just look at an applicant’s grades; we also look at character and potential. And we continually ask, ‘How can we make a greater impact?’ “We always credit the students who earn the scholarship, as well as their parents. I love it when alumni return to Chicago after college, join the workforce here, and become leaders. Loyola Academy junior guard Scott Dean connected twice on a basketball court last week. Not with a teammate, via pass. Not with a basket, via a shot. During the player introductions at Evanston Township High School on January 28, Dean slapped senior teammate Billy Palmer’s left facial cheek with his right hand and then followed that up immediately by slapping Palmer’s right facial cheek with his left hand. The slaps weren’t vicious. They also weren’t gentle. The 6-foot Palmer was ready for the friendly smacks, because he receives them before every tip-off. Happily. “I’m pumped up for every game,” Palmer would say later on his 18th birthday. “Those slaps? Love them. They help me. They add fuel to my fire.” Palmer slapped an inanimate object—the basketball—late in the fourth quarter of Loyola Academy’s 41-33 defeat of last season’s Class 4A state runner-up. Ask Corey Winchester how he thinks he clinched a spot at Northwestern University and you won’t hear a word about admissions essay tutors, expensive private counselors, or a laundry list of extracurricular activities. Instead, he will tell you about a human journey outside of the classroom—one that involves family dinners, weddings, and funerals. It was in those settings where he forged a bond with his elementary school teacher Andrea Gray. And it was that meaningful connection between a caring educator and child that laid the foundation for his success as both a student and educator today. Last March, 31-year-old Winchester, a 2010 Northwestern graduate and now a history and sociology teacher at Evanston Township High School (ETHS), received the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. The prestigious honor was bestowed to 10 recipients from a statewide field of 500 nominees. Winchester, a Philadelphia native, isn’t the maudlin type. Yes, he grew up in an underserved community. He has heart-wrenching stories about his mom taking care of three children while his father, a U.S. Army Reserve member, was called to Iraq. He’s also a first-generation college graduate. But to reduce him to a Horatio Alger-esque figure would be a disservice; his life is so much more than a tidy tale of a boy beating the odds. The way he sees it, he was actually quite fortunate, and he is keenly aware of the fact that his childhood support system is one that many lack (but desperately need). Now he feels a duty to pay it forward. “My family let me be me,” says Winchester. “Ever since I was a kid, I was someone who just loved random knowledge, and that’s something they let me explore.” His mother (“my best friend,” he says) took advantage of a program for discounted access to cultural institutions; along with his grandmother, they would take trips to Philadelphia Zoo and The Franklin Institute. She also armed each of her three children with library cards, encouraging them to be voracious readers (Winchester still keeps a copy of Goosebumps in an old plastic storage container full of childhood treasures). “Of course there were moments when I didn’t want to do homework,” he says. “But my parents didn’t micromanage, because I micromanaged myself. I liked getting As, and I liked the idea of being great at what I liked doing. Both my parents were more invested in who was teaching me and how those relationships developed.” Winchester’s relationship with Ms. Gray, his first-grade teacher, was the most pivotal. While it’s an unorthodox procedure in most schools, Gray was permitted to keep her class in tact through the third grade, giving her two extra years to invest in her students and their families. It was an opportunity she relished. “She found ways to humanize us,” he says. “She wasn’t getting us ready for tests. Education is something that is done in community; it’s intergenerational. It’s not done in metrics.” Gray would invite the Winchesters to her home

philosophy. “Traditionally, relationships in education are transactional,” explains Winchester. “The sole purpose is to get a kid where they need to be, and make sure they get an A. But that removes the responsibility of getting them what they need, which is to find out who they are and how to love themselves.” With classes of up to 30 students, Winchester knows it’s a chal-

lenge to recreate his connection with Gray with every single student. But that doesn’t stop him from trying. “When you’re standing in front of young folks, 42 minutes is not a lot of time to deliver instruction and also work on building relationships,” he says. “You have to prioritize; you have to find ways to get to know who they are. Students will trust you with information about their lives.” “You have to be honorable and accessible,” he adds. “Students want to see that you’re a person too. I think I would argue that what some schools are doing is customer service as opposed to relationship building. And in communities of color, we talk about villages raising our children—that’s what really makes a successful space.” Winchester is currently on sabbatical at ETHS, but true to his nature, he’s not one to rest on his laurels. In addition to possessing a master’s degree in education from Loyola University Chicago in Cultural and Educational Policy Studies, he is currently pursuing a second master’s in learning sciences at Northwestern. He is also policy fellow at Teach Plus, where he works on methods to improve school discipline, teacher preparation, and retain teachers of color. And when he returns to his teaching post, you can find him actively involved in student organizations like SOAR (Students Organized Against Racism). “I think the work that I’m interested and passionate about is twofold in an educational setting,” he says. “How do we find disruptive ways to support the humanity of others? We need to love each other in our formal learning settings. How can we be urgent about that work, and responsive to those needs on a global scale?
