It’s a brisk, sun-blanched morning, and I’m walking from River North to the Ukrainian Village to check out Kasama, the Michelin-starred Filipino joint recently featured on Hulu’s The Bear. On the way, I pass Augusta and Paulina’s Auto Repair and indulge in the fantasy that the spot is run by two female mechanics—complicated, scrappy women who look great in coveralls and are unafraid to get their hands dirty.

Such a premise would well suit a story by JoAnna Novak—be it short fiction (her collection Meaningful Work came out in 2021) or a novel (her debut, I Must Have You, was released in 2017). Novak’s narratives are packed with unexpected female protagonists as difficult as they are daring. To call them “heroines” feels imprecise; Novak doesn’t attempt to morally justify, let alone heroize, her characters’ motives or actions. She instead lets them fret, rage, second-guess, manipulate, and stew. Novak doesn’t just allow women a full range of emotions, savory or not, she celebrates their capacity to implode yet survive, to crash into the highway medians of life, only to exit via hatchback and hitch a ride out of state.

I’m meeting Novak in the Kasama brunch line because we share a penchant for imaginative pastries and extravagant peoplewatching. I’ve known the author and poet for 13 years, and have dined with her in Brooklyn, Albany, New Haven, Kansas City, and Los Angeles. But this is the first time we’ve broken bread (or, in this case, black truffle croissants) in her hometown.

After two decades away— pursuing a Bachelor of Arts at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, a Master of Fine Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, another in Amherst, Massachusetts, and a forthcoming Ph.D. at the University of Southern California—Novak has returned to the Windy City with her husband, 3-year-old son, and feisty Chihuahua Papillon mix. Making a home in Evanston, Novak approaches this

new chapter with characteristic curiosity.

really, is so rich with mystery and natural beauty,” she tells me. “I get ideas when I’m run-

ning along Lake Michigan, especially when the waves rival those on Venice Beach.”

Novak’s most recent book, her first memoir, is called Contradiction Days, inspired in part by the author’s obsession with abstract painter Agnes Martin, who fled the New York art scene in 1967, packing up her art studio, giving away her materials, and disappearing in a pickup truck only to resurface in Taos, New Mexico 18 months later. In title alone, Contradiction Days speaks to the complexity of both Martin and its paradoxical narrator. Now 38, Novak is a quiet person with a provocative mind, a fashion maven who frequents public libraries, a culture vulture entirely absent from social media. Her refulgent condo—housed in a former Nabisco factory—radiates an airy buoyancy at odds with the darker impulses of her writing. It’s also a 180 from the sagebrushed desert topography of Taos, where Novak took her family in 2019 four months before her son was born to embrace a “life of renunciation.” And also, of course, to write a book.

Like any Novakian literary venture, Contradiction Days is no beachside read. Novak is not a beachy person (don’t let the Chanel espadrilles fool you). Chronicling the author’s brutal experience of perinatal depression, the memoir is a beautiful, disquieting account of toggling between the demands of a creative life and those of literally creating life as a mother. “It was hard enough to be a human being,” the narrator reflects, “... but hardest of all becoming a mother when you’re a woman human being whose reproductive urges have been satisfied by her art.”

And how did she push through it—reaching for the “positive freedom” that the artist-mystic Martin espoused? With typical Midwestern grit. “Discipline was an expectation and a virtue in my home,” she explains. “Being ‘off the streets and out of trouble,’ as my grandmother liked to joke, was a pathway to imperviousness. Of course, imperviousness is sort of overrated, but I had to learn that the hard way.”

These days, life remains contradictory, but on the whole feels much more tranquil. Every morning, Hewn Bakery beckons Novak from a few blocks over.

Her son is enrolled in pre-K at the same school where her husband teaches English. “My office looks out onto treetops and train tracks,” she describes.

“In the mornings, it seems like there’s nothing but sky.”

Artist LINCOLN SCHATZ’s studio practice spans photography, sculpture, drawing, and new media. SOMALI-STYLE LAMB SHANKS

WITH SEASONED RICE

One of my boys went to school in Minneapolis where there is a large Somali population. He fell in love with a lamb dish they did at a restaurant there, and we’ve been replicating versions of it at home ever since.

From our various renditions, we think this recipe is best. It’s made with lamb shanks slow roasted in a fabulous blend of spices and paired with seasoned rice.

Xawaash, a fragrant potpourri of cinnamon, cumin, coriander, cardamom, black pepper, clove, and turmeric, is a Yemeni spice mix used in most savory Somali dishes. Here, it’s included in the paste used to season the lamb, as well as the rice (called bariis.)

I referenced chef Hawa Hasan’s recipe for the Xawaash, which is then combined with vegetable oil, garlic, onion, cilantro, Kashmiri chili, and smoked paprika to make the paste. You’ll coat the shanks with this, then slow roast them with vegetables for two and a half hours, making the rice during the last half hour of the meat’s cooking time.

Your reward? Falling-off-thebone tender lamb over spiced, vegetable-flecked rice that perfectly complements the meat.

And if you want to go full-on Somali-style, serve platefuls of the finished dish with a perfectly ripe, unpeeled banana next to each place setting. This may seem novel to uninitiated diners, but the banana is to be sliced and eaten between bites of the rice.

Serves 4 INGREDIENTS FOR THE XAWAASH SPICE BLEND • 1, 2-inch piece cinnamon stick • ½ cup cumin seeds • ½ cup coriander seeds • 2 Tbsp black peppercorns • ½ tsp unshelled cardamom seeds • 1 tsp whole cloves • 2 Tbsp ground turmeric FOR THE LAMB • 4 lamb shanks • 1 medium onion, peeled and chopped • Small bunch cilantro (three or four sprigs) • 6 cloves garlic • ¼ cup Xawaash spice blend (ingredients above; method below) • 1 to 2 tsp Kashmiri chili powder (More if you like hot and spicy; less if you don’t) • 2 tsp smoked paprika

• 4 Tbsp vegetable oil, divided • 2 tsp kosher salt • 1 tsp freshly cracked pepper • 3 potatoes, peeled and cut into generous chunks • 3 carrots, peeled and cut into chunks FOR SEASONED RICE • 1 Tbsp vegetable oil • 1 onion, peeled and chopped into small dice, divided • 1-1/2 cups chopped fresh tomato • 3 sprigs cilantro • 1 tsp chicken or beef bouillon paste (I used Better Than Bouillon) OR one bouillon cube • 2 cups basmati rice • 1 Tbsp Xawaash spice blend • ½ tsp ground cardamom • 1 tsp turmeric • 2 small cinnamon sticks, broken into medium pieces • 2 Tbsp raisins for garnish (optional) • Minced cilantro, for garnish THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

LIFESTYLE & ARTS METHOD MAKE THE XAWAASH SPICE BLEND Break the cinnamon stick into small pieces. (One firm roll-over with a heavy rolling pin works well.)

Excluding the turmeric, place the rest of the spices and the broken cinnamon pieces in a heavy skillet over medium heat and stir, toasting for a scant 2 minutes until very fragrant. Remove spices from pan and cool. Grind the spices into a fine powder (I use a coffee grinder.) Check for any remaining unground pieces and grind spices again. Pour into a bowl; add the turmeric. Stir together well and place in a tightly lidded glass jar. You will use about 1/3 cup of the spice mix in this recipe. The rest (a little under a cup) will keep for up to 6 months stored in a cool dark place.

MAKE THE SEASONING PASTE In the bowl of a food processor, add onion, cilantro and garlic and 1-1/2 Tbsp oil. Pulse into puree.

Place puree in a bowl. Stir in ¼ cup Zawaash spice blend, Kashmiri chili powder and smoked paprika.

PREPARE THE LAMB Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Pour remaining oil into an oven-safe casserole dish. Pat lamb shanks dry (to help the paste stick) and rub with salt and pepper. Coat each shank with the seasoning paste, top and bottom, saving a bit of the paste for the

vegetables. Nestle shanks in casserole dish. Toss potatoes and carrots with remaining paste and add to dish. Cover dish with foil. Roast in oven for 2 hours and 15 minutes. Remove foil and roast for another 15 minutes, or a little longer, until meat is falling-of-the-bone tender. During the last half hour of cooking time, make the seasoned rice.

PREPARE THE SEASONED RICE Return heavy skillet to cooktop over medium low heat. Add 1 Tbsp oil and ½ cup of the diced onion. While onion begins to cook, pulse remaining onion with cilantro in food processor. Add this mixture to the onion in the pan along with tomato and bouillon. Cook, stirring, about 5 minutes until onion and tomatoes are soft but still hold shape.

Remove from heat. Place 2 cups rice with 3 cups water in rice cooker. Stir in tomato/onion/cilantro mixture. Stir in Xawaash spice blend, ground cardamom, turmeric, and cinnamon sticks. Cook rice (following rice cooker instructions.) Fluff rice and pick out the cinnamon pieces.

TO SERVE Plate each serving with generous portion of rice.

Sprinkle with a few raisins (if using). Spoon some vegetables over all. Top with lamb shank. Sprinkle with minced cilantro. Serve hot.

A third grader sees his Tutoring Chicago tutor before the start of their weekly 90-minute session and turns into a mini Usain Bolt, just like that. The ecstatic youngster’s all-out sprint in a hallway precedes a bear hug that nearly ejects the tutor’s lungs.

The mother of another tutee writes a note to Tutoring Chicago to thank the 58-year-old nonprofit for vastly improving her son’s reading skills and for elevating his confidence— inside and outside the classroom—from sea level to the stratosphere.

A fourth-grade student has trouble spelling his last name before being paired with a patient, resourceful volunteer in Tutoring Chicago’s Literacy Intensive Tutoring (LIT) Program. The tutor gets to know the person, not just the student, establishing a deeper connection along the way. The boy then spells better, comprehends the written word better, and now can’t wait to enter a classroom full of students to learn some more.

“Our volunteers are fantastic people, willing to give their time to help economically challenged students in the city fall in love with education through one-to-one tutoring and the steady, supportive relationships that emerge from those free sessions,” says Glencoe native and Tutoring Chicago Chairman of the Board of Directors Tommy Sternberg.

“But tutors often soon realize that they get as much out of the experience as their students do.”

“Tutors have told me,” the William Blair partner adds, “that the highlight of their week is the time they spend tutoring, because it’s rewarding and because it brings them joy.

They smile when they see a kid smile in a learning environment.”

Tutoring Chicago’s mission, in essence— brighten the future of Chicago’s children through the power of education and trained tutors who care as much about teaching as they do about being attentive, friendly mentors for their tutees—made Sternberg beam as soon as he heard about it from Tutoring Chicago Board Member and fellow New Trier Township High School graduate Marc McCallister.

It also struck a chord with Sternberg, who will be forever grateful for having embraced innumerable opportunities at highly reputable North Shore schools as a child of Dan, a for-

mer Glencoe Youth Baseball commissioner, and Rena, a contemporary art consultant.

“Look, education is a fundamental right regardless of where you come from or how much money your family makes,” Sternberg says. “Everyone learns differently, and not everyone can afford a private tutor. Tutoring Chicago exists to help students (first through 10th grade) develop a love of learning.

“It’s crucial for the students of Tutoring Chicago,” he continues, “to have consistency—our caring tutors provide that by showing up every week.”

The families of the 1,100-plus students who received 45 hours of free instruction and support from Tutoring Chicago in 2023 would have had to pay nearly $2,300 had they hired a private tutor at the market cost of $50 per hour.

Sternberg, the teen, earned his first paycheck scooping ice cream at Baskin-Robbins in Glencoe. He’d then take scoop shots against buddies at a local basketball court. Sternberg ran for freshman class president at New Trier and won, in part because of his clever, memorable speech, “Top 10 Reasons You Should Vote For Me.” “I made it fun, and I loved David Letterman,” says Sternberg, who also played varsity soccer (goalkeeper), served as the features editor of the student newspaper, and enlivened the radio station’s programming (as a sports talker/play-byplay announcer and Variety Show host) in high school.

“I had a tremendous experience at New Trier, both in the classroom and in extracurricular activities,” the 1998 NTHS graduate adds. “I took advantage of what the

Now that’s making the grade.

“We’re always looking for tutors (age 18 and older),” says Sternberg, who set up retirement plans and investment accounts for Tutoring Chicago employees and was a force behind the purchase of more than 1,500 Chromebooks for the nonprofit’s online tutoring program. “But there are other ways

school offered. I loved learning, loved being busy. I’m constantly learning a lot now, working as a healthcare analyst on William Blair’s global equity team. It’s my job to keep up with the cutting-edge developments in medicine and science. I often talk with renowned doctors and scientists. It’s hard and challenging, but that also makes it fun.”

Not so fun for Sternberg at Duke University was studying engineering. He lasted a year and a semester as a major in that field. Courses like Electrical Engineering,

Advanced Physics and Advanced Calculus flattened him.

“I got bulldozed,” Sternberg recalls. “Got my worst grades ever.”

Good thing he took a Macroeconomics class in his freshman year. Good thing his resiliency kicked in. He enjoyed the class and opted to change his major to Economics.

The 2002 Duke graduate got his MBA at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 2009, five years after starting at William Blair as a Chartered Financial Analyst.

Sternberg was named partner at William Blair in 2017.

In 2016 he and his wife of 10 years, Jori, a Northbrook native, and their three children— twins Marni and Levi, now 9, and Garrett, now 7—moved from Chicago’s River North neighborhood to Glencoe.

“I was fortunate, having a great childhood in Glencoe,” Sternberg says. “It’s a tight community. Biking to town, going to the beach, hanging out with friends, meeting at the park to play a pickup basketball game—super memories, all of them. I’m happy that my kids get to experience what I did as a kid growing up in Glencoe.

“My wife … she’s amazing, organized, runs the house, keeps everything going. My kids are amazing, too. My life opened up as soon as our twins were born. One of my favorite memories as a new dad is pushing a double stroller in Chicago. Now it’s so cool to see our three kids interact. Not all of them are always happy to see me after work. But if one of the three is, I’m okay with that, and happy.”

So are kids in Chicago, as long as Tutoring Chicago is up and running and fostering a lifelong love of learning.

“I attended an event at the Booth School of Business when Rahm Emanuel was Chicago’s mayor,” Sternberg says. “He spoke at it and was asked a question: ‘What’s the best way to help Chicago?’ Rahm said, ‘Make a difference in one person’s life.’

“That’s what our Tutoring Chicago tutors are doing.”
