Keeping with the Beat NEW TRIER JAZZ FESTIVAL CELEBRATES ITS 37TH YEAR BY DEBBIE LEE THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

When the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival comes to New Trier High School on February 8, participants can expect the kind of format that has made this a beloved event for 37 years. “Jim Warrick, the former New Trier jazz director, started this festival in 1984 because he believed that young jazz students should hear the very best professional big bands for themselves,” says Mark Hiebert, Interim Director of Jazz Bands. “But he also wanted to provide an experience that encouraged them to pursue their own study of this music.” In keeping with tradition, students from 35 schools will gather in a non-competitive setting for an entire day of jam sessions, clinics, and the opportunity to perform on a main stage in front of peers and jazz enthusiasts. But what makes this year’s festival different—intentional or not— is that it will also underscore the contributions of female performers to the genre. One can’t help but wonder if jazz critic and historian George T. Simon—who, in 1967, infamously said, “Only God can make a tree, and only men can play good jazz”—would have come Continued on PG 10

It’s Sunday morning in January and despite the brutal winter weather, Temple Jeremiah in Northfield is bustling with activity. Young children are lined up outside of the sanctuary for a sing-along with the cantor, clusters of teens gab about their weekend before gathering for a lecture on voting rights, and adults make their way through the halls to get to Hebrew class. Right in the middle of the chaos, executive director Danny Glassman breaks down a giant pallet of groceries shrouded in plastic. Dividing the contents between two work stations, he and a team of eight congregants will grind away for the next few hours to construct six-pound care packages full of nourishment: cereals, fruit, pasta, and other shelf-stable goods. Next, the bags are transferred to bins, loaded onto a truck, and driven by a volunteer to Highland Park, where they will be distributed to recipients among two local public schools. This initiative, known as Backpack Blessings, provides two days’ worth of food to neighboring children who qualify for free or reduced price school breakfasts and lunches. The backpacks serve as a supplement for weekends, when students are at home and lack access to cafeteria meals. “When we first started, we went out to our neighboring communities and saw that there was a large number of children on the free lunch program in Highland Park,” explains Barb Miller, Temple Jeremiah’s president. “When we announced that we’d start the program in that city… well, we had many members of our congregation who grew up in those schools and had no idea about the statistics.” According to welfareinfo.org, 1 in 15.5 people in Highland Park live in poverty. Poverty rates for children in nursery and elementary schools are just above 10 percent, and a 7.8 percent rate for middle schoolers is considered high enough to impact the com-

munity due to lower expected graduation rates. Backpack Blessings partners with the Northern Illinois Food Bank to provide anywhere between 35 and 60 packages per month to kids in need. Five dollars can feed a child for the weekend, and $140 can provide enough food for an entire school year. It is no coincidence that Backpack Blessings’ assembly line is organized in the lobby of the synagogue—the purpose of being on full display is to inspire action from members

of the congregation. “We’re blessed that people not only provide financial resources, but dedicate their time to keep this program running,” says Miller. “The first thing Senior Rabbi [Paul] Cohen said when he started here 20 years ago was, ‘I want this building to be a receptacle for doing good,’” she adds. “If you haven’t noticed, we keep food and clothing donation boxes Continued on PG 10

We want it set up so that every time you walk into the building, you think about giving back.” Miller, a former speech therapist, has been a member of Temple Jeremiah for 25 years. She started as a volunteer with Feed the Hungry, a program that packs hundreds of bagged lunches for those in need; eventually, she oversaw the development of all social justice programs at the temple. There is currently a total of eight, including Eat and Be Well, a medical food pantry for underprivileged outpatients with chronic conditions, and an inclusion initiative that designs holiday services and special events for people with different abilities. To Miller, establishing Backpack Blessings 15 years ago was the least she could do to express gratitude for her own circumstances. “Barb and so many others here want to use their blessings and privileges to help others,” says assistant Rabbi Rachel Heaps. “But we can’t keep doing the same things without addressing the root of the problem. Women in the jazz world have not only made a dent in the brass ceiling; they’ve blown right through it. This year’s event is proof. The headlining guest is the DIVA Jazz Orchestra, an all-female 15-piece big band from New York, which is making its third appearance in the festival’s history. (The only other ensemble with multiple performances is the Count Basie Orchestra.) Members of the band will host special 50-minute master classes for saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and rhythm section players. And for the third consecutive year, the festival will feature a “Women in Jazz” dinner, complete with a Q&A session, for its female participants. Last year attracted more than 140 young musicians, as well as a panel of six professionals from around the country, for more than an hour of conversation and inspiration. Of course, the schedule also includes plenty of

ways we can heal the problems we see is to partner with our immediate community—to know who we are giving to and make real connections with them.” Miller says that in addition to assembling care packages for Highland Park students, she and her team have worked with other schools, PTAs, and synagogues to help them establish their own Backpack Blessings. Backpack Blessings is just one of many social justice programs promoted by Temple Jeremiah. Miller refers to the synagogue as a “destination temple,” attracting congregants from more than 35 zip codes because of its unique commitment to advocacy efforts. Criminal justice reform, gun safety, hunger advocacy, immigration, inclusion, and mental health are among the issues they address—many of which are intertwined. “For us, participating in these programs ties back to the Jewish value of tikkun olam,” explains Miller. “It is our obligation to repair the world.” To donate, volunteer, or for more information on Backpack Blessings, visit templejeremiah.org.

As 50 student performances take place throughout the day, there will be concerts by Matt Ulery’s Loom (a critically-acclaimed Chicago quintet) and the University of Illinois Jazz Band. Sight reading sessions, divided by junior high and high school levels, will be available to all participants. And special clinics that focus on arranging techniques and New Orleans brass band music will be held. The festival will conclude with a 7:30 p.m. concert at Gaffney Auditorium, starting with New Trier’s Jazz Ensemble 1, and followed by the DIVA Jazz Orchestra. Tickets for evening concert are $35. Forget points, rebounds, assists, and steals. Highland Park High School’s boys basketball team considers deflections its most critical statistic. The Giants amassed a whopping 32 deflections—a season-high total—in their 47-40 defeat of Waukegan High School in the third-place game at the Lakes High School Martin Luther King Tournament in Lake Villa on January 20. The triumph upped HP’s record to 10-6. Deflections disrupt an offense’s rhythm. A deflection often leads to a steal, followed by points on the other end of the floor. Thirty-two deflections, in one game. Need some perspective? There are 32 minutes in a game. “We were good defensively,” understates Giants coach Paul Harris, the program’s varsity coach since 1999.

The key to the 1-2-2 is sprinting when the ball is in the air. You can’t jog to the area you’re responsible for covering. If you do that, you’re going to give the shooter an open shot.

HP’s 1-2-2 zone defense, more than any other scheme, puts Harris’s hoopsters in position to change the course of passes. “The key to the 1-2-2,” Giants senior guard Ari Cooper explains, “is sprinting when the ball is in the air. You can’t jog to the area you’re responsible for covering. If you do that, you’re going to give the shooter an open shot. “That can’t happen,” he adds. Cooper, like classmate Joey Goshen, comes off the bench to provide a spark, particularly on

defense. Cooper is 6-foot-1, 160 pounds; Goshen stands 6-1 and weighs 150. You could argue, easily, that they’re as vital as Harris’ starters are. “Whatever the team needs me to do,” says the selfless Goshen, who plans to study business at the University of Missouri. “We’re all big on communicating in games; you need that in order for the 1-2-2 to succeed. It’s all about talking on the court, as well as forcing the ball to the middle, where other guys slide over to help and make scoring even more difficult.” “Sometimes, in our 1-2-2,” adds Cooper, “you can get caught staring at the ball as its moving; you don’t want that to happen. That’s when communication, from teammates playing defense behind me, helps.” HP limited host Vernon Hills High School to five first-quarter points and five fourth-quarter points in its 38-35 victory on a snowy January 17. The win improved the Giants’ record to 4-1 in the Central Suburban League North division. The visitors survived the Cougars’ 15-point third quarter. HP netted only four points in the

frame and trailed 30-29 heading into the final eight minutes. “Not a lot of possessions in that game for us, so each was valuable,” Goshen says. “Good win; it’s hard to win a road game in our conference.” Starting senior guard Zach Fagenholz came up big for HPHS twice in the fourth quarter, nailing a three-pointer—from four feet, at least, beyond the arc—and coming down with a rebound with only 1.9 seconds remaining. His trey gave the Giants a 36-35 lead at the 3:59 mark. Giants senior forward Isaac Griswold hit a pair of free throws in the final second. Billy Rudman paced HPHS with nine points, followed by eight each from Fagenholz and senior forward-center Val Oplchenski. But the star of the night was that 1-2-2 zone. It didn’t allow a point in the final 5:03, after VHHS had secured a 35-31 advantage on an Erik Rimas three-pointer. “Coach Harris loves defense,” Goshen says. “Games are won with good ‘D’. Coach Harris believes that, and so do we.”

William Barnard was in Houston when he called his then-fiancée, Nadia, in Naperville. Excessive excitement nearly throttled his vocal cords after he’d heard “Hello.” Barnard—an Adidas field agent and the manager of the company’s first Social Purpose Team at the time—had just addressed around a dozen children who survived Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Some had been displaced. All did not just listen intently to Barnard’s messages of hope. They. Hung. On. His. Every. Word. The jovial, engaging-since-birth Barnard felt an immediate connection. “Nadia!” Barnard bellowed at his trembling phone. “This has to be my life! I have to serve as a youth leader. I want to have a positive impact on kids.” Nadia listened to his declarations and new career aim. She nodded. She knew. Barnard had a gift, a special presence, an ability to embolden youngsters in any setting. “My wife has been my head coach and my cheerleader for years,” Barnard, more than two years later, says from a seat at a table at Glencoe Youth Services (GYS) in early January. And Barnard, 30, has been guiding and rooting for North Shore adolescents since being named GYS executive director in August 2019. GYS provides recreational, educational, social service, and leadership opportunities in a safe and supportive environment to high school and middle school age youth living in New Trier Township. “After I left Adidas [after three and a half years and after receiving the company’s inaugural Social Purpose Award], I was teaching a fashion class,” says Barnard, who attended Illinois State University for three years, as a secondary education major, before transferring to the Academy of Design in Chicago. “I did not like it at all. I thought about returning to Adidas before I saw the Glencoe Youth Services job posting.” Barnard grew up on Chicago’s West Side and knew nothing about Glencoe. He researched it. As he drove to the North Shore village for interviews with then-GYS Executive Director Mar-

garet Ann Paauw and current GYS Board President Jennifer Adler, the Curie High School graduate (named “Best Dressed” in his senior year) thought, “I have no chance at landing the position.” But Paauw

could see Barnard thriving as a leader at the nonprofit, and Adler, impressed after their sit-down, asked Barnard to email her five ideas he’d like to introduce to the agency. “I could have emailed at least five ideas to Jennifer that day, before I left, because I had thought about them and my visions in general for the organization before my interviews,” Barnard says, adding that one of them—since implemented—was his Mental Health Campaign; GYS partners with K-9 Reading Buddies (therapy dogs) of the North Shore to provide a stress relief clinic for teens on the second Tuesday of each month. “Jennifer,” he continues, “has been incredibly supportive and hands off since I started here. She basically gave me the keys to Glencoe Youth Services and told me, ‘Drive it.’ ” Barnard and several of his GYS charges motor to Chicago on the second Saturday of each month to deliver meals to homeless people. Meals they had prepared and packed in the suburbs. Barnard named the

program “Lunches of Hope.” Among GYS’s other offerings are a “Know Your Worth” workshop; the monthly Escape Room, a GYS-Glencoe Library collaboration with a problem-solving focus; Social and Emotional Learning Exchange (SELE), a combined GYS-Josselyn Center youth mentoring program; and Cooking Club, which convenes once a month at Central School (grades 5-8), where schoolboys and schoolgirls learn cooking skills and GYS Assistant Director Pamela Tousis serves as Chief Encourager of healthy food choices. “There’s no one route to reaching a kid,” says Barnard, father of a son, 7-year-old Avrey. “I’m always looking for lanes, for roads, to connect effectively with our youth. I still love fashion; it makes me happy. A couple of grade-school boys with us are working on a GYS project involving [Vons] sneakers. It interested them, and it got them excited. They’re adding style to the shoes, but only after I’d asked them to do so while thinking, ‘What does GYS mean to you?’ ” The most meaningful influence in Barnard’s childhood was his mother Gwendolyn, a special education teacher at Daniel Webster Elementary School (William Barnard’s alma mater) in Chicago and the wildly popular youth manager at the family’s church. School kids and church kids swarmed Gwendolyn; they sought hugs and an audience from her, and she obliged warmly, every time. “You should have seen how much time all of my friends and other kids spent with my mom—they hogged my mom,” Barnard says, chuckling. “My mom was the cool mom. She was great to everybody; she had a genuine relationship with everybody. Mom attracted people to her because she made them feel comfortable around her with her energy and love. “My mom, I can say without hesitation, is the main reason I found my way to the kind of work I’m doing now.” William Barnard delivered the commencement speech to Daniel Webster School eighth-graders last spring. The title of his talk was “Go Get Your Carrot” (also the working title of a book he hopes to publish soon). The lunch lady Barnard remembers from his days as a student at the school was in attendance. So was a familiar-looking security guard. The proudest one in the room? Gwendolyn Barnard—by a mile. A stutterer for the first nine years of his life, William Barnard stood before another group of impressionable children—1,000-plus miles from Houston—and voiced a series of stammer-free, inspirational thoughts. “Rabbits want carrots, right?” Barnard says. “I told the kids it’s important to go after what you want in life, to be prepared for some obstacles along the way. Kids face difficult situations everywhere; it doesn’t matter where you live. “My main point, and I hope they’ll never forget it, was, ‘Don’t let adversity in your life be an excuse for not succeeding.’” Glencoe Youth Services, 847-835-3121, is located at 680 Greenwood Avenue in Glencoe.
