EDITOR’S NOTE 106

JOURNEYS

“I

wish that every day was Saturday, and every month was October.” – Charmaine J. Forde Welcome to our official full month of Fall! October is such a special month in the Midwest, especially our Hinsdale community. I hope you’ll join me at one of the many local gatherings supporting local business and nonprofits. I know my daughter, Kassie, and I will be attending all the essential fall festivities. We rounded up the latest not-to-miss parties and events in our Save the Date section. Be sure to fill your calendar now. This issue is a celebration of not only all things fall, powerful and inspirational women in our midst. Our cover story highlights Whitney Reynolds and her journey from Oklahoma native to host of her nationally televised talk show, Whitney Reynolds Show. Reynolds second season kicks off on October 4 and we couldn’t be more excited to share her story and how she is helping nonprofit organizations in the Western Suburbs. Our annual Power Women feature is back this month, spotlighting local women who work tirelessly to build, uplift, and inspire

112

our community. And, another bold Hinsdale woman, Walker Rediehs, founder of Bomb Moms, shares her favorites in Country Vs. Town. Schiller DuCanto & Fleck attorney Tanya Stanish is featured in our Esquire section. Stanish has defined her 25-year family law career with a focus on fierce litigation, while compassionately helping her clients to the other side of divorce. And in our Publisher’s Profile section, we highlight Glimpse Vision’s Dory Kenna—an optician and partner at the eye care company that offers hand-crafted eyewear in Hinsdale and the Gold Coast. With the change in weather, comes a change in wardrobe and beauty essentials. Style and Beauty Editor Lauren DeMaria shares her favorites for fall in Style and Beauty. In Journeys, Dustin O’Regan shares her captivating adventure to the Maldives, which is sure to inspire a winter getaway when the weather inevitably turns cold. Peter and Kate Michael visit Lucca Osteria & Bar for our Dinner Date, and what a treat it is. How can you go wrong with truffle-butter fettuccine prepared tableside by chef Claudio Ulivieri, in a hollowed-out wheel of Asiago cheese? As we curated this special power women issue, I have felt encouraged to reach higher and work harder to achieve some of my goals. It can feel daunting to balance it all and set a good example sometimes, all while raising a beautiful little girl, but the women on the following pages have inspired me. I’m sure they will do the same for you. Kemmie Ryan kemmie@jwcmedia.com

endra Scott in Oak Brook is pleased to announce that it will be once again celebrating Holley Day on October 13. Holley Day was created in honor of Holley Kitchen, a dear friend of Kendra who passed away from metastatic breast cancer. On October 13, all of Kendra Scott’s boutique swill give 20 percent of all purchases back to Inheritance of Hope, an amazing organization that provides retreats to families going through cancer related illnesses, so they can experience the good during their time of need. Along with honoring Holley’s life and legacy, the team at Kendra Scott Oakbrook Center will celebrate one special individual who is close to their hearts—Laura Reith—a breast cancer survivor. For more information on Holley Day, visit blog.kendrascott.com/ blog/tag/holley+day.

TANYA STANISH: FIERCE LITIGATOR, COMPASSIONATE ADVOCATE Tanya Stanish of Schiller DuCanto & Fleck, LLP has a 25-year family law career that has been defined by her innate care for her clients. Her practice centers on her clients’ needs and a commitment to helping them towards a new life on the other side of divorce. WORDS BY CAITLIN MCCAULEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIAN CAREY AND JAMES GUSTIN/FIG MEDIA

T

anya Stanish’s practice is focused entirely on her clients. She understands that each case, each story, and each circumstance is different and unique to that specific client. Stanish first and foremost listens to her clients and lets them tell their story. She also doesn’t discriminate in her representation; she has and continues to represent both men and women, not favoring one spouse over another. After getting to know the client, Stanish then begins to form a plan based on the client’s situation and needs, while always keeping her clients involved throughout the process. She provides her clients with several different avenues, all of which will achieve the end goal, but she lets her clients determine which avenue feels right for them. She’s always on hand to work with clients as well to help them determine which path may be the best fit for them if they’re struggling to select that themselves. As for what sets her apart, Stanish is a very talented and accomplished litigator. Litigation is a true talent that not everyone has or can learn, but Stanish has mastered and excelled in this field. What makes her such an asset to her clients though, is that she’s equally as comfortable and skilled in practicing in all different forums as well. Stanish realizes that not every case requires litigation, and she’s just as prepared (and successful) in mediation or directly negotiating resolution. Stanish works primarily with high net-worth clients and has a history of working with particularly high-profile clients in the

Chicago area as well. These cases are often accompanied by complex financials and can include sensitive family matters. Stanish doesn’t shy away from these cases. She’s not intimidated by complicated financial or familial issues, she’s familiar with them from her work history and has the knowledge and experience to take on the more complex or nuanced cases and handle them well. A key component to Stanish’s successes is also keeping her clients in a positive mindset, even amidst an overwhelming case. She always reminds her clients that even if they’re on a bumpy road right now, they’re working toward an end and on the other side of that bumpy road is a whole new life. It’s not uncommon, sometimes just a month after a divorce is finalized, or sometimes over a year later, for her former clients to reach out to Stanish with an update to let her know they’re doing well and in a really great place. “At the end of a long road, seeing the client happy and better off … that’s when I know I’m making a difference,” says Stanish. One of the biggest mistakes she sees throughout the divorce process? Not trusting your lawyer. Stanish advises that if you have a good lawyer, you should listen to them. She also notes that it’s ok to switch lawyers if you don’t like the results you’re getting (or not getting). Stanish herself often takes on cases mid-way through, where she can then reframe the case and help her clients determine a new direction to take. Above all, Stanish understands and advises the importance of feeling comfortable with and having trust in your representation. That way, you can work together as a team, as she does with her clients, and get the results you want and deserve. The Schiller DuCanto & Fleck, LLP Chicago office is located at 321 N. Clark St., Suite 1200. For more information, call 312-641-5560 or visit sdflaw.com.

COU NTRY VS. TOW N WALKER REDIEHS is a fashionista at heart,

having spent time with high end luxury consignment retailers like TheRealReal.com and Apparel Center. After growing up in Mississippi, the East Coast, and Cincinnati, Rediehs made Hinsdale her home in 2014 with husband, Jamie. The mom of three—Miles (8), Embry (6), and Mack (3) (and one much beloved Darvi Dog)—describes Hinsdale as the perfect place to raise her family, “We have neighbors who act like family, and I can’t imagine doing life without them. They are my village and my inspiration for Bomb Moms.” Rediehs’ new business, Bomb Moms, which she started as the pandemic hit, recognizes the extraordinary and often mundane things that moms do every day but rarely are recognized for, and it recently expanded to 13 towns in the Chicago area. When she isn’t awarding moms with The Bomb Mom Award, Rediehs serves on the Hinsdale Historical Society Board, and participates in philanthropic efforts for the Hinsdale Humane Society. She says, “My heart is passionate about moms, animals, and old houses. I’m not sure how they go together, but I find ways to give back to the causes as often as I can.” She shares more of her favorites in the country and on the town with us:

EDITED BY KEMMIE RYAN/PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA HAIR & MAKEUP BY LEANNA ERNEST Mantra? “It’s all good.” I give my dad, Duke, all the credit for hammering that mantra in my head, whether I want to hear it or not. Best grooming tip? Get your hair blown out as often as you can! It is amazing what those 30 minutes can do for the soul. Guilty pleasure? Chardonnay and going out to eat. Favorite foods? Lou Malnatis Pizza and my favorite southern soul foods. Music you love? Anything country and classic rock. Best advice ever given to you? You are more likely to get disappointed when you expect. Best advice you’ve given? Life’s good, but it’s not fair. Earliest memory? Flying alone from Washington, D.C. to Mississippi around 6 years old to see my grandparents. When you wake up, you? Hit snooze at least

WHEN IN THE COUNTRY Your style is? The mom uniform—athleisure wear. Can’t leave the house without? My phone and Darvi Dog. Transportation? My three-row SUV. Driving music? Country. Place to eat? Cafe La Fortuna for breakfast (coffee), Fontano’s Subs—their salad tastes like their sandwiches without the bread, Fuller House for dinner. Shop? All of the local boutiques. Small boutiques were my business and supporting small is my jam. I love Alixandra Blue and Collections, Vintage Charm, Meredith Jaye, Kelsey Resale, and Yankee Peddler, but when I can’t make it into a store, I can do some damage on Ssense.com and therealreal.com. Best thing about country? Everyone knows each other, and everyone knows someone who can help you with whatever you need. Worst thing about country? Everyone knows each other—there are certainly some days when I don’t quite look my best and undoubtedly, I run into 10 people I know. The perfect day is? Coffee at Café La Fortuna, shopping at The Courtyard in Hinsdale and Jackson Square Antique Mall in La Grange, lunch at Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse in Oak Brook, an afternoon nap, capping off the day with dinner on the patio at Posto 31.

three times. Before bed, you? Watch an episode of Dateline or Bravo reality TV, depending on my mood. What’s on your bookshelf? House Beautiful magazine and Parents magazine. I can never find the time to get wrapped up in a book. You can’t live without? Husband, kids, and dog. Love to escape to? Wisconsin—the further north, the better. Advice you would give to your younger self? Drink more water and care less about what others think.

WHEN IN TOWN Your style is? Jeans, a t-shirt and an oversized blazer, sneakers, and a hat—always a fun, stylish hat. Can’t leave the house without? My phone for the Ventra app. Transportation? Metra and walking—I really embrace my name. Driving music? True crime podcast. Place to eat? Dublin’s Bar & Grill in the Gold Coast for casual or Le Colonial if I want to take it up a notch. I spent 10 years living in the Gold Coast and I really miss my old haunts. Shop? Art Effect in Lincoln Park and Bloomingdale’s. Best thing about town? The city itself. I feel I often take it for granted that we live in one of the best cities in the country. Worst thing about town? Bad Uber drivers. The perfect day is? A quick Metra ride into the city, a walk to State Street in the loop for a little shopping, lunch at Atwood on State Street, and a matinee Broadway show.

Talk show host Whitney Reynolds takes her laser-focused vision straight to the top with a nationally broadcast program where she shares the extraordinary stories of the every day. I

f sunshine had a name, it very well might be Whitney Reynolds. Because to know this popular Chicago talk show host is to feel a big ray of light. Reynolds, the host of the nationally televised Whitney Reynolds Show on PBS, has always known that she wanted to be a broadcaster. “One of my earliest childhood memories is having a friend of mine pretend to be a ’90s celebrity and me interviewing her,” says the Oklahoma native. “Even at a young age, people opened up to me. I loved listening to people, hearing them, and making them feel seen. I knew this was something I wanted to do with my life.” But there is no roadmap to becoming a TV host, especially when you’re from a tiny little town in Oklahoma. But Reynolds dreamed big and believed in herself. On one fateful trip to New York City when she was in the 10th grade, Reynolds planned to visit each of the morning news programs on the three days she was in town. She made signs with the hopes of drawing the attention of the camera crew. As luck would have it, after a late night of some serious sign-making in their hotel lobby, Reynolds was holding one of them in a ride up the elevator. True to even her young self, she struck up a conversation with a man sharing the elevator with them who she later learned was a producer for Good Morning America (GMA). “In those days, GMA had a studio audience and he told me he would get me inside so I didn’t have to stand out in the cold,” Reynolds remembers. “It was a dream come true.” The next morning when it was time to head to GMA, Reynolds’ chaperone gave her $20 for a cab and sent her on her way. When she reached the studio door, an intern denied her entrance because her name wasn’t on the list. “Fortunately, I made eye contact with the guy from the elevator who brought me in,” she says. “And he made the intern apologize for turning me away. That was a good thing because that intern helped me tremendously figure out how I was going to make talk show I dreamed of happen.” The intern, whose name was Jordan, was a student at Baylor University when Reynolds met him. He was in Baylor’s broadcast program, which was ultimately where Reynolds found herself. “I graduated from Baylor in three years and when it came time for me to have an internship, Jordan walked my resume right to the intern supervisor. Interning at GMA was one of the best training grounds any broadcaster could hope for.” After honing her skills, Reynolds was hired as a morning anchor at stations in Oklahoma and Texas. But it wasn’t long before she took a risk and landed in Chicago.

“How I ended up in Chicago isn’t a great story, but it was the valley that prepared me for the mountain I was about to walk,” she says. “When the job I moved here for didn’t happen, I was selling shoes at Oakbrook Center for a little bit. I was then hired for another anchor job, but I had them put in my contract that if my online talk show got picked up—let’s be real, it was Facebook Live video—that I would have an out. And it was good that I did because Facebook morphed into YouTube that turned into Weekends with Whitney, which my show that was eventually bought by NBC.” When NBC gave her show a yes, Reynolds had to figure out what it meant to “own” a program. But never one to be deterred, she did and partnered with advertisers that have never left her side. “Two years into Weekends with Whitney where I was all over Chicago trying new restaurants, tasting wine, and jumping out of airplanes—I came back to the idea that led me into broadcasting to begin with—I wanted to change the world of talk TV where it was mission-centric and we told hopeful stories.” This passion of Reynolds stemmed from some troubling circumstances in her own upbringing where she needed to feel that someone heard and understood her story. “I wanted to create a safe space where people could tell their stories and feel comfortable and confident owning them, and the success of my program tells me that we’ve done this,” she says. Last March, in the midst of COVID-19, Reynolds got the call that her program was going national. Reynolds’ mission, however, didn’t stop with her TV program. Since 2013, Reynolds has hosted a motivational “give back” segment on iHeart Radio and in 2021 launched a national iHeart Podcast, Pop and Positivity. Over the years, Reynolds has help fundraise more than $2 million for local and global charities through her media work, including a number of organizations in the Western Suburbs and Chicago’s North Shore. Her podcast recently featured the Together at Peace walk in Hinsdale. “Things always seem to happen with just the right timing,” says the married mother of five-year-old twins. “I want to be as hands-on with my children as I can be, and my program was picked up just as our kids were going to be in school full time. I’m very spiritual in my private life, and I definitely believe God had a hand in all of this.” The second season of the Whitney Reynolds Show is scheduled to kick off October 4. “I really believe that this season is our best work yet,” she says.

hen pediatric dentist DR. MIRA ALBERT founded Brush Pediatric Dentistry in 2011, she had two small children and several years of practice under her belt. “But I didn’t have a single patient,” she says. Fast-forward to today, and Dr. Albert’s practice successfully treats thousands of patients each year as it marks its 10th anniversary in Hinsdale. As both a national spokesperson of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and a board examiner, she is a recognized authority in the specialty. “The last 10 years have been the most challenging, but most rewarding years of my life,” she says. “I have been on this incredible rollercoaster of treating families that have become friends, building a business, and raising my own babies—all while trying to take it all in and better myself every day. This milestone is a reminder of how fast time passes yet how committed we have to be in the pursuit of excellence.” With the goal to bring the specialty of pediatric dentistry and the importance of optimal pediatric oral healthcare to the community where she lives and beyond, Brush’s expert team has become a well-respected leader in the field of pediatric oral healthcare. “We pride ourselves on helping parents navigate the complexities of everything from how to stop using a pacifier to which orthodontist to choose and what to expect if their child develops a cavity” she says. “The meaningful connections I make while children grow up in my practice are what keep me going.” Brush Pediatric Dentistry is located at 911 Elm Street, Suite 228, in Hinsdale. ANIMAL LOVER

ompassionate is just one word to describe veterinarian JOYCE ASHAMALLA.“Upon graduation, I interviewed at many veterinary hospitals, but the decision to join the team associated with Hinsdale Animal Hospital was the best decision I could have made,” she says. “With our lovely demographic, I was able to flex my medical muscles in both surgery and medicine, while at the same time growing the clinic in the community.” Ashamalla received her BS in Animal Sciences from the University of Illinois-Champaign Urbana, where she stayed to complete her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 2007. “Hinsdale Animal Hospital has been in operation since the 1960s, and after having the privilege to grow and manage it, we were able to build a brand new gorgeous state-of-the-art facility in 2019,” she proudly adds. As Managing Partner, her business style is professional, compassionate, and educational, with clear communication. You’ll find her and all her staff “looking clean and similar in color with clearly embroidered names to unify the team.” Ashamalla’s role model is, unsurprisingly, one of the most influential women in history (more specifically, in science): Marie Curie. Upon reflecting on getting where she’s at today, she states: “As with most careers, it’s a lot of hard work and persistence with a sprinkle of meeting the right people at the right time. Being a veterinarian is rewarding because it combines my love of medicine and helping animals and the families that love them.”

Hinsdale Animal Hospital is located at 724 N. York Road in Hinsdale. For more information, call 630-323-1312, or visit animalcareinfo.com.

As a licensed clinical professional counselor with a Master of Science degree in clinical psychology, Arenberg specializes in relationships, personal transformation, childhood emotional neglect, phase-of-life transitions, trauma, anxiety, and depression. WOMAN-OWNED

G

INA SARAN, principal and founder of Precision Stone Design, didn’t know she would one day lead her own woman-owned business. But her mother did. “When I was 23 years old with only two years into my work life, my mom visited me once at my workplace,” Saran says. “Later that night she said to me, ‘You would do well if you opened your own business’. I told her I didn’t have any business idea or money or inclination to open up my business, and that was that.” Fifteen years later, what started as a project at Saran’s dining room table in between jobs, grew into her own thriving business with more than 10,000 projects successfully completed to date. Precision Stone Design is a premier fabricator of granite and quartz countertops, and natural stone and porcelain. The company features onsite fabrication with precision laser technology and vein-match visualization software. Saran’s BA in Economics and Masters in Business and Economics give her the strong foundation to run her own shop, motivate her team, and manage the bottom line. “I run our business with help of EOS tools (Entrepreneurial Operating System), and management by objectives,” she says. “I like to give our team quarterly rocks and annual objectives, so that we are all accountable and working towards a common goal.” Seems like Saran’s mother was right about her daughter, “My mom was a teacher by profession but an entrepreneur at heart. She would always find ways to encourage, motivate, nurture, and fuel ambition in the people around her.” Precision Stone Design is located at 945 Lively Boulevard in Elk Grove Village, 312-427-8663, precisionstonedesigns.com.

TACEY S. BARRINS and DANELLE PARKER are creating a legacy of compassionate, effective, and results-driven female financial advisors with the Eleven Twenty Seven Group at Morgan Stanley. Their highest priority is to create and build a foundation of trust with their clients by being accountable. They both recognize the value of having had excellent role models and mentors that made lasting impressions on them. “My dad taught me to surround myself with good people, and I am where I am today because of great mentors I have had,” Barrins says. Parker points to a few women: “My aunt, Janet Disbrow, was a very successful executive in the Chicago advertising industry; Sheryl Sandberg, for being a strong, driven, successful woman in a male dominated industry; and Stacey Barrins, who has taken me under her wing as a mentor, and gave me whole new outlook on my career.” As Managing Director and a Certified Financial Planner and CPA (non-practicing at Morgan Stanley) with 16 years’ experience in her field, Barrins has demonstrated success in many ways, not the least of which includes being named one of Forbes’ Best-in-State Wealth Advisors for the last four years, and among America’s Top Women Advisors for the last three. Parker, a Vice President, says, “We are very hands-on and we value providing a personal touch to our clients. We endeavor to get to know them on a personal level so that we can help them achieve their financial objectives.” Both women are poised to create a lasting legacy for females in their industry.

RIS BERGER, lives by the adage, “You just never know where life will lead you.” With this spirit for life, she earned a fine arts degree studying interior design and photography. “I thought I would be a famous photographer or interior designer or have a cool store when I graduated from college,” she laughs. “I never dreamed of being in real estate, and then my jobs led me in a path that has brought me to where I am now.” That path included working in the interior design world, and then commercial real estate in the retail and land development division at Grubb and Ellis. After her son was born, she says, “I began remodeling and flipping houses in the late 1990’s to 2010—when flipping wasn’t really a known thing and HGTV didn’t exist—while selling residential real estate and doing interior and landscape design for friends and clients.” It all dovetailed perfectly into residential real estate. Now, as President of KB Group with COMPASS Real Estate, Berger brings that experience to the table in every transaction. She always goes that extra mile to find what her clients want and need, while bringing her easygoing nature and making the experience fun. “I truly admire my mom for always making me feel like I could do anything I set my mind to,” Berger adds. “She was a born competitor but never came off that way.” Now, Berger brings that competitive edge to her clients every day. KB Homes with COMPASS Real Estate is located at One Grant Square, Suite 201, in Hinsdale. For more information, call 630975-0088, or visit krisbergergroup.com.

PIONEERING PSYCHOLOGIST

B

efore DR. GRETCHEN A. BOULES became a pioneer and leader in the field of psychology, her life started on a musical note. “Long before my calling as a psychologist my goal was to become a concert pianist,” she says. “During my college years I decided that music was an important part of my life but my true calling was to help others in the capacity as a psychologist.” Still, her music helped shape her current career by teaching her patience, sensitivity, and how to listen to others—and it serves as the therapeutic backdrop of her life and work. Now, as Founder of Boules Clinical Psychology Group with more than 25 years as a clinical psychologist, Boules is the 5th prescribing psychologist in the state of Illinois. It took dedication and hard work to get to where she is today. She embarked on five years of the most rigorous training of all states, including a Masters in Clinical Psychopharmacology from California School of Professional Psychology/Alliant International University, a Certificate in Biological Sciences from Northwestern University, completion of the National PEP exam, and 15 months of medical rotations at top health systems in Illinois. Boules has been inspired and supported by her husband and children, and by her mother and father. “My octogenarian parents still run their own companies and have always taught me to reach for the stars and never stop growing as a human being,” she says. “Ultimately, it is both an honor and privilege to be able to guide individuals as they embark on their own life’s journey.” Dr. Boules’ private practice is located at 200 S. Frontage Road, Suite 324, in Burr Ridge. For more information, call 630-3219809, or visit boulespsycologygroup.com or drgretchenboules.com.

RENDA BILL’s flair for staging and design led her to obtain her real estate license in 2015, and she hasn’t looked back. “I have been helping family, friends, and referrals with all their buying and selling needs ever since,” says the @properties agent. “I always knew that I wanted to chart a path helping others, and found my true calling in real estate serving my clients and guiding them through one of the biggest investments of their lives,” she says. “I am proud to say I have built my own network from the ground up through hard work, dedication, and taking care of each transaction like it’s my own personal sale.” In five short years, she is proud of her $18 million* dollars in sales volume, and the numerous repeat clients on top of regular referrals she receives from satisfied clients. “It’s all about loving what you do and the love I have to help others find happiness,” she says. With her passion for design, she says that Magnolia co-founder Joanna Gaines is one of her role models. “Her immense love for everything she does makes it look like its not business, but just her way of living,” Brenda says. “She has shown me that you can have a family and be present in their lives while also having a full time career under your belt.” What’s more, Brenda includes professional staging consultation with all of her listings.” Now that’s the cherry on top. ESLIE BOWMAN has been designing her own life for a long time. It just took a while to pursue her dream of becoming an interior designer. She established her first career as a CPA, which she continued for some time as a single mother to her young children. “As a single mom, I quickly learned that failure was not an option and to not worry about things I could not control,” she says. “Because of that, I was able to pursue my dream and a new career.” Bowman envisioned a place where one could design, build, and decorate their home effortlessly, all under one roof—a welcoming place that offers a one-of-a-kind experience for clients. The Design Bar, with its 7,000 square foot showroom in Burr Ridge, does just that with Bowman at the helm as Design Director. “I would not be where I am today without the support I get from my clients, vendors, and staff, and most of all, my husband who works alongside me every day. I am grateful that they all believed in me way before I believed in myself.” Bowman wants to encourage both new and repeat clients to shop local. “This past year and half has been difficult for retail brick and mortar stores nationwide, and it’s more important now to think of us and other local retailers when looking for distinctive gifts, furnishings, décor, and one-of-akind holiday items. We take great pride in sourcing unique and unusual items for your home.” The Design Bar is located at 880 Village Center Drive in Burr Ridge. YLVIA KOS and JULIE BOUCHARD, luxury real estate agents with Berkshire Hathaway Chicago|Hinsdale, each bring their unique experience, skills, and market savvy to the career they both love. They have a passion for finding clients homes they love in a neighborhood that checks all of their boxes, and advising sellers on how to prepare and price their homes for the best outcome. Kos studied fashion and interior design at Columbia College, and became a costume stylist before realizing that wasn’t her forever job. “I returned home to support my dad’s new construction business with my design background. It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with all things real estate and I got my broker license soon after.” Bouchard studied business with an emphasis on marketing in college, and began her career with a B2B marketing agency working directly with clients on branding and digital media. This experience lends itself to her approach as an agent. “My business style is utilizing data and market analysis to make informed decisions on what is a good deal to buy at and what price to sell at,” she says. “I also utilize that data to make home remodel and upgrade decisions to help my customers get the best price for their sale or purchase.” Bouchard’s design insight informs her work: “This allows my clients to envision a space differently and helps them see how a space can work to meet their needs.” Sylvia Kos and Julie Bouchard are with Berkshire Hathaway located at 35 S. Washington Street in Hinsdale. Call Bouchard at 312-560-3211, and Kos at 630-863-4684, or visit bhhs.com.

ACHEL BROWNING is President of Browning & Sons Fine Jewelry in the heart of Hinsdale. “The business is built on ours and our clients’ mutual appreciation for fine things including the quality of their jewelry and where it comes from,” she says. The bespoke business was established on Mother’s Day Weekend in 1987 in a town that values family above all else. Browning developed her love for jewelry as a child, when she delighted in the piles of fashion costume jewelry her neighbors dropped off in paper bags. “My grandmother, also Rachel, would put them on a scale and announce how many pounds of jewels I had collected.” she says. “Our focus is delivering jewelry pieces that we ourselves would wear and collect, collaborating with artists and designers on selected merchandise that we present as a collection to build upon. We thoroughly enjoy the design and merging of our original work together with designer’s pieces to create an eclectic jewelry selection.” Browning & Sons offers a selection of fine jewelry including heirloom-quality, traditional designs, in-house one-of-a-kind custom pieces, custom collections exclusive to the brand, and the redesign and repurpose of client pieces. “Working on wedding engagements is an honor. We get to be a part of clients’ families, from the education of their purchase all the way to their wedding.” In addition to her “rock star” staff, Browning says, “I have the pleasure of working with my son, Johnny, who is my greatest asset to the business. And, our clients are truly our friends and family.” Browning & Sons Jewelers is located at 46 S. Washington Street in Hinsdale. For more information, call 630-986-0880 or visit browningandsons.com.

TOUGH LITIGATOR

EPI CAMERLINGO earned her attorney stripes in what she refers to as “the hard knocks” of the Illinois Divorce Division. “I learned so much from my many teachers along the way, especially David Grund, a top litigator in the divorce division and my first real mentor. I have also learned so much from the many incredible, learned, patient judges over the years that I have presented, argued, and debated before,” she says. Camerlingo recently joined Michone Riewer as a Partner with Strategic Divorce. “I am impressed with the firm Michone has built as well as the admiration and support she has for those who work with her,” Camerlingo says. “It is also obvious that the attorneys and staff feel the same way about her.” Camerlingo says that she got to where she is today by making mistakes, experiencing a few failures, and being otherwise creative and resourceful. She credits her mother, and many other women in her life that, “have reached down or out to others to lend a much needed helping hand.” It’s this humility, grit, and resilience that make her adept in the challenging arena of divorce and family law. She adds: “My style is to be straightforward, upfront, and strategic. I am joining Michone because I see in her a toughness as well as an amazing ability to find solutions—signs of a great lawyer and legal mind.” Sounds like a win-win. DANCING THROUGH LIFE

t’s a fact that JENNIFER GRAPES CROUGHAN is a former professional dancer (most notably with the Milwaukee Ballet). And it’s also true that she is founder and Artistic Director of Hinsdale Dance Academy (HDA). What is not so obvious is what is at the heart of Croughan’s mission in working with young dancers. “I do not teach dance lessons, I teach life lessons,” she says. “The lessons that create successful professional dancers also create successful, responsible, and employable young adults.” The vehicle she happens to use to instill these lessons is dance.” Croughan credits her late mother-in-law, Janet Saxton-Croughan, as her role model. “She was one of the kindest and gentlest human beings I’ve ever known,” she says. “She also had her own successful business in the city, and I learned a lot about business from her. I strive to be as caring, calm, and compassionate as she was everyday.” Croughan explains that learning to pay attention to detail is one of the most important tools that a good dance education teaches, and one that will make someone “stand out in the boardroom.” As a premier academy for classical dance instruction, HDA offers a ballet curriculum that includes classes in pointe, variations, and pas de deux. “My goal is to help create a generation of well-rounded, critical thinkers who can operate individually or on a team, who aren’t afraid to think outside of the box, and who have a deep appreciation for the arts and can recognize it’s contribution to our society, our planet, and our well-being.” Brava! t’s no wonder that DR. ALLISON CYCHOSZ points to Walt Disney as her role model. Hard work and determination define the founder and owner of AMC Legal, P.C. Her impressive credentials include graduating cum laude from Benedictine University, where she was a member of the Mock Trial Team; and earning her JD from John Marshall Law School, where her law review article was published in The John Marshall Law Review. Yet, surprisingly, she says, “I never wanted to work for myself.” That was then. After spending years searching for the perfect job, she decided to go out on her own. “It was the best decision I ever made,” she says. “I now get to know my clients on a much more personal level. They become members of our AMC Legal family. I share in their joys and sadness and help them along the way. It’s so much more rewarding. I also get to have more time with my family and achieve a better worklife balance.” Now with 18 years of experience, she provides excellent, affordable legal representation for generations of business owners and families. Allison’s clients feel comfortable working with her, knowing that she listens to their needs and creates a plan that is unique to them. THE DOMINO EFFECT

ARYSA DOMINO lives her life and career as her grandmother, Nadia, did. With what she calls her “outwork the rest” mentality, Domino earned a BA from Northwestern University, an MBA from Northwestern Kellogg School of Management, and passed the CPA exam—before deciding to pivot. “I chose a career change in my late-30s, which is a difficult thing, especially as a single mom,” she says. “The hard work ethic instilled by my grandmother, and the notion that you can reinvent your life, was a definite driver in my success story. Growing up I spent a lot of time with my grandmother. Despite all the hardships in her early life, she re-created herself with strength and grace here in the Chicago area after immigrating from Eastern Europe as a single mother herself.” After becoming a real estate broker and Certified Relocation Specialist, Domino became the No. 1 individual agent in Hinsdale in four short years and has nearly doubled her sales volume each year. “I believe my finance background and commitment to an analytical, data-driven business style has created incredible results for my clients,” she says. Domino admires Sara Blakely, founder of Spanx shape wear. “She’s a dream chaser with an incredible drive and belief in herself,” Domino says. “She created a product, self-funded it from the beginning, and success quickly followed.” Domino’s brand is her product, and her tagline “The Domino Effect makes everything fall into place” is stronger than ever. fter 12 years of working in brand management for corporate America, KRISSY DZIEWIOR left the travel and long hours it demanded behind to become co-owner of the business she and her husband, Jim, started. “Little did I know, the hours would be longer with a whole other host of demands that come with entrepreneurship,” Dziewior says. “I now balance my days and many late nights between managing the business and being with our son, Harrison, and daughter, Luella.” Powder Coating Specialists is a leading powder coating and sandblasting company that focuses on refinishing all things metal for businesses and consumers. “We wanted a place customers could bring their great grandmother’s chair that she always sat on, or the patio furniture set that you no longer need but is perfect for your child’s first home,” she says. “We quickly gained the attention of homeowners that loved the idea of a one-stop shop for their metal furniture, sentimental items, railings, or even remodeling projects.” With a BA in business with concentrations in marketing and management from St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame, and York University Schulich School of Business executive program, Dziewior was poised for such an undertaking. “I am detailed oriented and meticulously organized, which is crucial during our peak season when we have over 100 multi-piece orders in our shop at once,” she states. “I lead with a communicative business style that leaves no guess work in what needs to be done. My goal is always to find a better way to connect and educate our customers with the service we provide.” Powder Coating Specialists/Patio Partner is located at 9436 47th Street in Brookfield. ne day, after working for other people for several years, DALIA GALINSKIENE realized she could make a difference for others and for herself. “I asked myself, ‘If not now, when?’” So she decided to take control of her own destiny and go out on her own, establishing not just one, but two businesses: DS Homes Hinsdale, and Salon and Spa Dalia. After building their first dream home in Burr Ridge and loving the experience, Galinskiene started her own custom home building company in 2008. “Being a female founder in the custom home building sector is a rare thing, yet I believe a beautiful one,” she says. “There is nothing easy or relaxing about it. It is hard work but every day there is progress and every day there are new challenges and different emotions. It is an amazing feeling when you see houses become homes, like watching your kids grow up.” With her love of wellness and skin care, Galinskiene’s secondary business is a luxury day spa featuring cosmetic, skin, and nail services in a European environment. “I am an entrepreneur at heart and love everything that I do.” But building homes is her real passion. “Designing, watching the process from scratch, and seeing the new homeowner happy and appreciative of everything what you do is what makes me happy.” From skincare to building homes, Galinskiene is all about bringing people joy and having a positive impact on their lives. DS Homes Hinsdale is based in the Western Suburbs, 630-440-4453. Salon and Spa Dalia is located at 106 Chestnut Street in Hinsdale, 630-455-4817, salon-spadalia.com.

f you ask about JULIANN GELDNER’s business style as Chief Operating Officer and Legal Counsel at The Geldner Center in Hinsdale and Chicago, you’re likely to get a nuanced response, one that praises her uncanny knack for marrying the art of collaborative participation with, when necessary, a dash of aggressive persuasion. JuliAnn, however, would rather shift the spotlight to her personal hero and role model—mother-in-law, Dr. Barbara Geldner, a Holocaust survivor who endured Auschwitz and then Bergen-Belzen. Barbara then went on to medical school and became a successful Ophthalmologist after emigrating to the United States with her family. “Barbara Geldner is my role model because she was a survivor, broke through impossible barriers, and was fierce about her freedom, her family, and her profession,” says JuliAnn, who earned her JD at University of Illinois Law School and her LLM at Loyola University Law School. JuliAnn is passionate about her family and her community. She has held numerous volunteer positions over the years and currently volunteers as President of her synagogue, Temple Har Zion, in River Forest. She and her family are third and fourth generation members of Temple Har Zion. The Geldner Center, which offers plastic surgery and aesthetic services, is located at 12 Salt Creek, Suite 315, in Hinsdale with an additional office in Chicago. COMMUNITY BUILDERS

EATHER HEHMAN and EMILY SPECTRE, co-founders of Efficiency Marketing & Publicity, knew they’d make a great team when together they recreated the Friends of the Wilmette Library to become a successful community endeavor. With her experience working with national and multinational corporations at several large advertising agencies in Chicago, Hehman discovered through her work with local businesses that the owners were passionate, professional, and cared deeply—not just about their business—but also the community. As a journalist writing about local businesses, nonprofits and other North Shore events, Spectre realized how much they are a fabric of the North Shore community. “When we unexpectedly ran into each other, we discovered our shared vision and decided to create Efficiency Marketing to help local businesses grow and thrive through strategic marketing,” Spectre says. “We are always trying to build community in the Hinsdale area”. The dynamic duo says their role model is Sara Blakely, founder and CEO of Spanx. “She built Spanx into a billion-dollar brand through her own tenacity to do whatever it took to be successful,” says Hehman. “Emily and I are creative thinkers who execute our ideas pragmatically, always working with clients on individual solutions. We treat each brand as if it’s our own.” Efficiency Marketing & Publicity is located in Wilmette. For more information, call 847-691-8399 or visit efficiencymarketingforgrowth.com.

POWER PHILANTHROPY

S

USAN HEIL fondly recalls attending Mistletoe Medley 2015 as a guest of her friend, Oak Brook Chapter Member Susan Santefort, and donor Nives Rizza. That year, Nives and her husband, Joe, were honored for their 25th year of giving to the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago. Describing Nives as an inspirational figure, Heil says she was motivated by her mentor’s passion for the Infant Welfare Society and its work on behalf of children and families in need. This marked the beginning of the Susan and Eleanor Heil Family Foundation’s association with IWS. Heil and Rizza have much in common, and an important bond is philanthropy. Both say that IWS’s mission—to promote the health and well-being of families in need—dovetails well with their charitable interests that focus on healthcare and children. For Heil and Rizza, “It’s all about the kids!” These dedicated women firmly believe that charitable giving is about more than writing a check. They take an interest in the organizations they support. A case in point is their association with the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago and its Angel Harvey Family Health Center. They are impressed by the Center’s wide array of services, including its CHAT Program (Child-centered Health & Advanced Therapies) that addresses the needs of children with developmental delays. There’s no doubt that Susan Heil and Nives Rizza have their priorities well defined, and family and philanthropy are paramount. Their mantra is simple and straightforward: Get involved, give back, and make a difference. The Oak Brook Chapter of the Infant Welfare Society is located in the Western Suburbs. DARING VISIONARY

E

MILY HIKADE’s aha moment came as she was heading to a small island in the Indian Ocean in 2014 when the plane she was on lost control. “As it started careening toward the ocean, all I could think about were the three little boys at home that were going to grow up without their mom,” she says. “Unbelievably, the plane corrected and from that point on, I dedicated myself to launching my own company.” Hikade founded Petite Plume—a luxury sleepwear company where snippets of her former perilous life are woven into products designed to provide comfort. That former life and career was as a diplomat specializing in counterterrorism and living overseas in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa for almost 15 years. While counterterrorism and clothing don’t typically go hand-in-hand, Hikade discovered parallels—being both a diplomat and a business owner requires a certain amount of grit, perseverance, and resiliency. She says that she was highly influenced by the sophisticated and minimalist styles she was exposed to while living abroad. Petite Plume offers luxury sleepwear for infants through adults. Not surprisingly, as founder and CEO of Petite Plume, Hikade takes a “powerful and prepared, not “pretty and perfect” approach to running her business, which is now a multi-million dollar company experiencing exponential growth. She credits all the pioneering women that blazed the trails ahead of her for bringing her inspiration and determination. Not one to rest on her laurels, she says: “But there is still a lot of work to be done.”

ATHERINE KARVELAS credits her success in life to being a problem solver and master networker, and to applying her work and life experience to whatever life hands her. “My strength lies in analyzing data and using a realistic approach to solve problems to achieve goals,” says the @properties real estate broker. “Whether in business or at home, ethics and values are a top priority.” Katherine spent the first part of her working career in education, first as a teacher and then in leadership roles. When she found herself a single mother of three, she called up what she had always told her students. “I taught my students to learn to apply their knowledge and skills to other aspects of life and work, and to be lifelong learners, and assured them that this is how they would grow and be successful in life,” she says. “Despite the risks involved with a career in real estate, I knew that I could make it to the top, and I was determined to get there.” She propelled herself to the top, and her work has been featured in Crain’s Chicago Business and on CNBC. Karvelas adds, “Just as important, philanthropy is at the core of my belief system and near and dear to my heart. In addition to being a supporter of the HJWC and other local nonprofits, I am proud and honored to serve as a board member on the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation Board.” Hard work, perseverance, and her spiritual guidance have made all the difference.

BREAKING THE MOLD

J

ACKELYN KASTANIS learned how to seize opportunity at age 14 when she auditioned her way into the magnet Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts in New York City. She took the scary leap, leaving behind her Catholic school pleated skirt and family in Detroit to fulfill her young dream. “My love for adventure met with my passion for the arts,” says the now Founder/CEO of Simply From The Heart Foundation (SFTH). “This set me on the path for a longtime journey in TV and film, and a move to Los Angeles, where being a member of the Screen Actors Guild from early childhood paved the way for roles and bigger opportunities.” Then, when her childhood best friend was given a year to live at age 27, Kastanis shifted gears, went to be with her friend, and decided to let her heart guide how to live the next phase of her life. “The loss of my best friend, Brooke Bolley, led me to begin something that would impact thousands of hospitalized patients nationwide and honor her forever.” She created SFTH, a nonprofit that provides patients with complimentary bedside beauty services to raise self-esteem and encourage well-being. Using what she describes as a “transformational and facilitative leadership approach,” Kastanis pushes boundaries, does her research, builds strong community connections, and cultivates relationships—with the apt motto Pamper with Purpose. “And I do it all with a smile!” she adds. It’s not surprising that she credits the collective women of Hinsdale as her role models: “There’s just a camaraderie here unlike anywhere else, and the people truly care.” As does she. Simply From The Heart is located at 13 E. 1st Street, Unit H, in Hinsdale. For more information, visit sftheart.org.

BALANCING ACT

t took a while for KATRINA VILLADOLID KERN to find the balance she needed to be a working mom. When her firstborn was three months old, she was faced with the prospect of returning to her stressful sales job in the city. “The thought of having to put him in daycare was breaking my heart,” she says. But, despite feeling blessed that her husband supported her decision to stay home, she realized that being a fulltime mom was extremely challenging in itself, and she enjoyed working and making her own money. “This is when I decided that I have to find something that I love to do and have the flexibility to do it,” she says. So, she started her own business, Contours of Hinsdale, which focuses on helping women and men be the best version of themselves with non-invasive body contouring treatments. Kern attended CoolSculpting University and received specialized Emscuplt training to deliver these innovative technologies safely and effectively for her clients. She learned how to be a strong, independent woman from her mother and grandmother, who both worked hard and raised their children with the resources they had—with style and grace. As an entrepreneur, Kern believes that “integrity is key.” She also encourages other women to do what they love to do and be happy. “Life is a balance and you can be it all, whatever that means to you,” she says. “If life isn’t what you expected, you can change it.” Contours of Hinsdale is located at 111 W. Chicago Avenue, Suite 200, in Hinsdale. For more information, call 630-207-7055, or visit contoursofhinsdale.com.

YNN LA PALERMO, co-owner with her brother, Tom, of Occhi Lash & Brow Studio and the Occhi Institute, wasn’t going to let a pandemic slow her down. In fact, she used it as an opportunity to expand the Occhi brand by adding new products. “We have forged through this past year and celebrated our 7th anniversary last month.” Still, the forced shut down of her business was a big challenge. “Sustaining during the shutdown and then reopening has been a struggle,” she says. “Both the studio and the training institute have survived because of our philosophy and high standards. While the business’s mainstay is quality lash and brow services, Lynn sourced and added products to the new arm of the business, creating a new brand Occhi Lashes, Luxury, Lifestyle—featuring unique highquality jewelry and casual clothing to customorder leather goods, home décor pieces, and Gianfranco Ferre’s coats, which are exclusive to Occhi. She’ll also be adding one-of-a-kind knit sweaters, handmade in the Midwest. “I now go out of my way to shop small businesses versus big retailers, as well as promote them,” she says. “We are now training women that are making career changes. It’s very exciting! We are proud that we have stayed true to who we are, and we are so grateful to our clients who have stayed with us because they recognize our commitment and appreciate our standards. Occhi represents Small Business America!” Occhi Lash & Brow Studio/Occhi Hair Institute/ Occhi Institute/Keen Eye @ Occhi is located at 17W580 Butterfield Road, Suite G, in Oakbrook Terrace. s owner of Café La Fortuna, a family-owned small business, ANGELA LAVELLI feels grateful too her loyal patrons for sticking with them during the COVID-19 pandemic that forced many businesses to close. “Keeping my customers safe and my business open was my biggest priority,” she says. “The pandemic caused a frenzy and need for food carry-out and delivery. As such, I had to create a new way to do business, one that incorporated phone and online ordering, and deliveries.” In order to abide by the CDC guidelines, Lavelli had to pivot quickly. She remodeled and reorganized the layout of the store in order to create a better flow for customers that allowed them to walk in, order, get their order, and walk out all in a matter of minutes. “The overwhelming support from our customers allowed this transition to be as seamless as possible,” she says. “And, I am grateful that all of our employees wanted to keep working throughout.” After word slowly got out that Café La Fortuna was open, they began to have the street full with people in a socially distanced line and cars with curbside pick-ups. “This proved to us that the Café La Fortuna “family” we have built with our customers throughout the years is one that will keep growing,” she says. In fact, Lavelli has noticed many new faces that have become regulars since the height of the pandemic. The greatest compliment came from one of Café La Fortuna’s longtime customers: “I need your coffee to be inspired.” Café La Fortuna is located at 46 Village Place in Hinsdale. t is apropos that MEGAN MCCLEARY admires hardworking, successful people in the world who are passionate about what they do, and succeed with hard work and integrity. As founder and luxury real estate specialist with McCleary Group, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Chicago, she has built an impressive luxury real estate business on those same principles. She counts her degree in business marketing from University of Dayton, study abroad at Trinity College in Dublin, and real world business and life experiences as integral to her success. Prior to moving to Hinsdale from Chicago, she sold multi-media advertising and developed a passion for real estate after building several houses. “Once we found this wonderful town Hinsdale, I was hooked, volunteered a lot, and became entrenched in the community,” she says. “I’m well connected; hard work, professionalism, and commitment are what help me excel.” She also puts a high priority on being compassionate, and counts Oprah Winfrey, whom McCleary met on several occasions, as one of her role models. “Oprah Winfrey faced challenges, yet was driven and passionate and achieved great success,” she explains. “Residential real estate is an emotional business. I remain calm and focus on details to make my clients experiences the very best possible, while achieving desired results.” McCleary Group is located at 35 S. eal estate is about home, lifestyle, and experience,” says DAWN MCKENNA, founder of Dawn McKenna Group (DMG). It was her desire to furnish her own home in 2003 that led to her initial foray into real estate. “I had always been interested in real estate and something of an open house junkie, so I decided to get my license. My goal was to refer a client or two per year to a local agent and use the referral fees to buy a couch,” she laughs. Within four weeks, she was a fulltime agent and Hinsdale’s Rookie of the Year. By 2016, she had established DMG, surrounding herself with like-minded team members who demonstrate her same passion for excellence: a ravenous work ethic and impeccable style with an energetic, youthful, and service-oriented approach. Today, DMG is Coldwell Banker’s No. 1 leading luxury real estate team in Illinois and No. 10 among all brokerages in the nation with offices in Chicago’s Gold Coast, Hinsdale, Lake Forest, and Winnetka, and on 5th Avenue in Naples, Florida. She counts her late mother, Barbara, as her role model. “Her wisdom still guides me today,” McKenna says. “She taught me to look my best and act the part, even if we were riding on the CTA bus home eating French fries soaked in ketchup out of a brown paper bag.” For McKenna, real estate is not about dirt and bricks and paint. “Whether in person, on a video, or in a photo, when I represent a client’s home or a buyer, I try to look my best and reflect well on the home, lifestyle, and experience I am selling,” she says.

HRISTINA SCALISE-MORRISSEY, MS, CCC-SLP, has always loved children, and her passion is to help them. Her aha moment came while she was a junior accounting major working in the college of education. “My supervisor asked me to deliver something to the speech clinic, and I happened to observe a little kiddo receiving speech therapy,” she says. “I immediately called home to tell my parents I was switching majors ... and that I needed a master’s degree for the profession.” After working hard to earn her MS in communicative disorders, and her license as a Certified Speech Language Pathologist and Feeding Specialist, she is fulfilling her dream as founder and CEO of Hummingbird Pediatric Therapies. The multi-disciplinary pediatric therapeutic center has earned the trust of physicians and families for nearly 30 years, providing pediatric speech, feeding, occupational, physical and developmental therapies, along with counseling and a therapeutic preschool for ages 2 to 7. “Often times, we are the first ones a parent will call when they have concerns for their child,” she says. “The most important thing we can do is to listen, give them hope, and assure them that there are many ways we can help their child and family. And, we are proud to announce our new Woodridge location opening in November 2021, with 11,000-square feet of pure fun!” Scalise-Morrissey spends her days at work playing with the kids and getting messy during feeding therapy. rowing up, BRIANA BRANDT MURRAY’s parents always told her that when you get where you are going, turn around and help others. “They exemplified that mindset,” she says. “And I fell in love with real estate because I was helping people every day find their dream homes to build a family in, or sell their family homes that had a lifetime of memories.” After building her multimillion dollar real estate business with @properties, Murray said it was time for her to help others in some way. Her parents are her role models, so when her mom passed away from cancer, and then her dad was recently diagnosed, she seized upon a new philanthropic opportunity that came her way. “It was a true honor to be nominated this year to be on the Board of Directors at the Wellness House,” she says. “I believe that you can have everything in life that you want, if you help enough people get what they want. I stand by that in business and in my everyday life.” On a daily basis, Murray puts her education (she holds a Masters in Advertising from DePaul University) to work along with her designation as a Certified Staging Consultant, helping her clients stage their homes pre-market, which sets her listings up for success. “I’m all about full service and honesty,” she says. “Real estate is more than a transaction, it’s a life moment. hen the country went into lockdown and MARIEL PAIN had to close her studio doors to barre3 Clarendon Hills in March 2020, she viewed the sudden change as an opportunity to transform her business. It actually aligned perfectly with Pain’s motivation for becoming a barre3 studio owner in the first place. “My studio celebrates movement as a way to fuel the soul and empower people from the inside out. When it was necessary to step outside the studio walls and all social plans were put on hold by COVID 19—it became crystal clear that what mattered to our clients was how exercise makes them feel rather than how it makes them look.” While Barre3 is a workout, it is redefining what success in fitness means, according to Pain. “At barre3, instead of exercising to meet an end goal, we exercise to be present in our bodies. When we exercise to honor our bodies and give ourselves what we need, we create a healthy relationship with exercise where movement is joyful—and it becomes an essential part of our lives.” This became especially important during the pandemic. Pain and her instructors began to live-stream classes from their living rooms into clients’ homes in April and then added a full schedule of outdoor classes to that in May. “The response was remarkable. Not only did nearly all my members stay with us, we discovered new clients who craved the power of barre3. It helped people to feel more resilient and empowered during the challenging time because mindful movement is medicine for the mind, body, and soul.” Barre3 is located at 158 Burlington Avenue in Clarendon Hills. LAUDIA PARRILLO was raised in a closeknit Italian family where her parents instilled in their children the core values of a strong work ethic, the importance of doing things well, and the joy of following your passion. So, when she found herself the divorced mother of four, she needed work that was flexible enough to allow her to care for her children while meeting the high demands of a career. Now a seasoned real estate broker with @properties, she lives by the adage, “If you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life.” Her degree in psychology from Texas Christian University also serves her well. “It’s incredible how my work as a real estate agent incorporates so much of what I learned in school,” she says. “I am a strong negotiator because I stay calm under pressure.” Parrillo sums up her business style by four cornerstones: Listen and learn what is most important to clients; Integrate what she’s learned into a customized plan for each client; Serve her clients, their families and the community; and develop and earn Trust and confidentiality. Her mother and father are still her role models “My father is 87 and he still goes to work every day,” she says. Claudia Parrillo is a broker with @properties located at 30 S. FLOUR POWER

fter ALI GRAEME became aware of some food allergies in her family, she turned to one of her oldest passions for answers: baking. Having recently retired as partner of a small, entrepreneurial international trading company, Graeme devoted her newfound free time to experimenting with food substitutions. Through some trial and error and a good doctor, she learned that her family had Celiac disease. “I spent years learning about gluten substitutes to create a flour mix that would allow my family, and others, to enjoy all of our favorite baked goods,” Graeme says. “Once I perfected my flour blend, I began the process of developing my recipes. I brought these treats to every family, social, or sporting event and asked for feedback.” Eventually, with encouragement from family and friends, she started Sweet Ali’s Gluten Free Bakery, LLC. “My friends now consider themselves the first Sweet Ali’s test market!” she laughs. Though not a baker by education, Graeme has found that her background in science and analytical skills (she majored in Biology at Drake University before going to the London Business School) have helped her make Sweet Ali’s successful. Her business style is a combination of “passion and precision to create delicious products that allow the gluten free community to fully enjoy food again.” While embracing transparency in her ingredients and generosity in her business, she encourages her employees to be dynamic participants in Sweet Ali’s success. It’s no wonder she considers her dad, “a man of strong ethics, with a curious and entrepreneurial mind,” her role model. Like father, like daughter. Sweet Ali’s Gluten Free Bakery is located at 13 W. 1st Street in Hinsdale. For more information, call 630-908-7175, or visit sweetalis.com and on Instagram @sweetalisg fbakery.

RISTI SMITH, owner of Sweet William women’s clothing boutique credits the former owner as her role model. “Marlene Burton is one of the most elegant, stylish, smart, and loved females that I know,” says Smith. “She taught me how to listen to each individual customer and to keep them in mind when choosing the fashion for the season. It’s something I strive for every day.” But Smith has plenty of experience and training of her own. After studying fashion merchandising at University of North Texas, she spent many years in the luxury retail arena, including ten years working at Sweet William, learning the business inside and out before deciding to purchase the store 7 years ago. “Our team at Sweet William is like family to me, and I think the longevity of employees that we maintain reflects the kind of culture we strive for,” says Smith. “Our customers expect a lifestyle brand from us, an environment where they feel welcomed the instant they walk in, and feel confident when they leave by keeping them in the latest up-todate fashions while still expressing who they are.” No matter what the day, you’ll find Smith dressed for success. “I love a good statement piece whether it is a bold blazer, a killer shoe, or a knockout piece of jewelry. Being styled top to bottom not only sets your mood for the day, but it feels empowering and expresses to others who you are. It truly is retail therapy.”

uring a celebratory toast at Pat O’Brien’s in New Orleans, after COURTNEY BOHNEN STACH earned her B.A. in Communication at Loyola New Orleans, her dad, John sketched out his vision for a family business on a cocktail napkin. Today, Stach is one of the broker owners—along with John and Penny Bohnen and John and Jack Brennan—of County Line Properties’ steadfast business and talented team of agents in the Western Suburban corridor. “My dad’s dream was to collaborate his sales knowledge of high-rises and home construction with my mom Penny’s ‘happy client’ 20-year track record of strong real estate sales.” It’s no surprise that Stach calls both parents her role models. “Their goal as a team was to develop a boutique real estate firm to serve the community and clientele with ‘the highest caliber of service’ combined with their expert knowledge of the area and industry,” she says. Of their three daughters, Courtney was the one compelled to embrace their dream. Her business style for success is to work tirelessly, keep clients prioritized, and remain always ahead of their needs. Stach’s outlook is evidenced by her everyday lifestyle: “I am inspired to work hard for my kids and family. In real estate, I love all the elements that energize ‘a family” and bring comfort and happiness to them. I work at maximum capacity to make their real estate experience the very best it can be. You have to operate like a rock star agent on every transaction and leave your clientele asking for an encore!” County Line Properties is located at 108 South Washington Street in Hinsdale, 630-789-3030, clphomes.com.

hat sets KRISTINA TAHERI apart from other special event planners is her diverse background and experiences. Following her undergraduate studies, she was living in France working for British Airways after having an international internship go astray in Brussels. “Everything around me, during those years, looked charming and chic, every morsel of food and glass of wine tasted amazing, and all felt right in the world!” Taheri says. “I decided then and there to focus on hospitality by going to graduate school to learn to professionally translate that festive, seductive, and special feel to others.” With that inspiration, she received a Master of Management from Cornell University and was recruited by the famed Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City for event management. Eventually moving to San Francisco, she put that experience to use, establishing her own company—Kristina Taheri Special Events—which she re-created and continued in the Chicago area ten years ago upon moving to Hinsdale. Her business style is bespoke personalized service. Connecting with the newest and hottest vendors and venues, the ability to handle any size event from an intimate, exclusive dinner party for ten, to professional corporate meetings for four hundred, to downtown loft weddings for two hundred and fifty guests, is all in a rewarding day’s work. She counts her role model as “the baby boomer women who paved the way for the next generations.” Surely, she’ll inspire success in other women someday—if she hasn’t already. ARRIE THANGAMANI knew she wanted to be an orthodontist as a young girl when she was fascinated and thrilled with the changes to her own smile after significant orthodontic treatment. Now as an owner of CHT Orthodontics, Dr. Carrie says, “Putting my team and patients first are the two most important elements of having a successful practice, result, culture, and experience.” While it took years of education that culminated in her orthodontics residency at University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry, she says it was so worth it. “I came to appreciate the unique blend of art and science involved in creating a patient’s new smile and improving his or her overall facial aesthetics, from braces for children and adolescents to Invisalign for adults and teenagers.” She balances being compassionate yet firm, serious but silly when appropriate. Dr. Carrie’s role model is her mother who managed to strike that elusive work-life balance. “She was a working woman in the 80s, and I always remember her being there for me and being present,” she says. “She was a wonderful mother and now it is such a joy to see her as an amazing grandmother to my children.” Care and compassion come naturally to Dr. Carrie, who donates her orthodontic services to Chicago area teenagers in need through Smiles Change Lives. Visit one of the Maldives’ greenest resorts—an emerald in a necklace of islands shimmering in the Indian Ocean.

L

WORDS BY DUSTIN O’REGAN

ocated between the Arabian and Laccadive seas, roughly 500 miles southwest of Sri Lanka, lies the Maldives, a country comprised of more than 1,000 islands. Our destination at Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas was a quick 35-minute seaplane trip from the capital city of Malé. Flying over the Indian Ocean, we were delighted by the broad spectrum of blue hues appearing in more variations than a color wheel. The liquid landscape was dotted with circular islands cresting the water’s surface. The brightest blues radiated from the island lagoons seemingly lit from

HL_1021_Main_SoftProof.indd 106

beneath. The deep blues became even more striking upon our descent when juxtaposed against the white sand beach and lush island greenery. Just before landing, we noticed the ring of thatched roof overwater villas … one of which would be our home for the week. At the arrival dock, our Villa Host Ismail welcomed and whisked us off in a little green buggy. I can still hear the pitter-patter sound it made on the wooden planks en route to number 211, our deluxe overwater villa poised above the translucent ocean. Entering 211, light poured through floor-to-ceiling windows and doors—revealing contemporary interiors with stunning views

OPPOSITE PAGE: Aerial view of over water villas ABOVE: View from the bedroom of the over water pool villa RIGHT: Manta Rays in Hanifaru Bay BOTTOM: FIRE interior of our decks and aquatic playground. The bedroom’s south doors opened onto an ample deck with three overwater hammocks, a suspended bed, and a dining table and chairs. The east doors led to an infinity-edge pool and a lower deck with plush lounge chairs and a staircase leading into the ocean. Another favorite area of our new home was the bathing quarters consisting of an immense outdoor shower open to the ocean on two sides, a large glass-bottomed tub, a chaise, two floating sinks, and an indoor shower. The room’s glass floor panels and translucent wall overlooking the pool, deck, and sea created a seamless connection to our surroundings. Often hours drifted by as we enjoyed the hammocks and pool. The weather was perfect, warm but not unbearably hot, and the constant ocean breeze and sweeping views made the experience absolutely intoxicating. When venturing out of our cozy enclave, we found three bicycles next to the front door each bearing a small wooden license plate inscribed with our names. Cycling beneath canopies of palm fronds and over curving white sand pathways onto our next great adventure was utterly idyllic. Every day unveiled

HL_1021_Main_SoftProof.indd 107

new breathtaking thrills; one favorite was the “Manta Ray Snorkeling Experience” in Baa Atoll’s Hanifaru Bay. The Bay is home to the world’s largest manta ray feeding region where these enormous creatures congregate to gorge on the plankton-rich waters. The adventure began with an exhilarating 40-minute ride on a dhoni, the traditional Maldivian boat. It continued as we leapt into the water to get up close and personal with the majestic rays that can reach a wingspan of more than 16 feet. As I swam along, I turned to see a ray with its large mouth open, gliding swiftly toward me. Heart racing, I made a mad dash to get out of his way—I knew his mouth was open to capture plankton (not me) but it was pure instinct not to block his path. Although extremely large, these graceful creatures appeared to be participants in a ballet of sorts to an orchestra audible only to them. The experience was magical, heart-pounding, and soulful all at once. Closer to home, great water adventures were literally at our doorstep. With our fins and masks in place, we’d hop off our balcony and head straight for the house reef encircling the island. One morning, with our snorkeling gear strapped to our backs and feeling quite like “locals,” we biked to the dive shop to explore another snorkeling route along the reef to the overwater spa. To our utter delight, we came across an octopus. Such sightings are incredibly rare because octopi are highly intelligent and have the chameleon-like ability to alter their appearance and “disappear.”

Over water villa pool After our enchanting discovery, we descended further into the coral gardens of the house reef. An incredible number of colorful creatures inhabit the reef, but we took particular interest in the blacktip reef sharks, Triggerfish, Barracuda, and, of course, the ever-adaptable octopus. Just beyond the reef, the bottom of the ocean disappears into darkness creating a hauntingly beautiful scene. One afternoon, we were excited to find that the dive shop offered clear kayaks—something my daughter has often talked about. We spent hours atop the Indian Ocean in our see-through vessels. The experience was surreal as we felt suspended over the glittering water in some sort of gravity-defying act. The excitement of our days often left us famished. At these moments, our Villa Host Ismail picked us up for the quick ride to an overwater compound containing four dining options—Spice, Sea, Sky, and Fire. Spice introduced us to haute Asian cuisine, Maldivian style. We often chose an herb-laced salad, naan bread, and rich spicy curries, which were shared around the table. My husband and daughter (the culinary duo in our trio) guessed at the ingredients attempting to discern the enchanting comSand bank binations. Yet, our efforts to recreate these delicacies at home have not been successful. Perhaps it was the open air, overwater setting and impeccable service that elevated our taste buds. One morning

SEA, underwater restaurant for breakfast we descended below the ocean, walking down flights of stairs, through a beautiful underwater wine cellar, and into a glass octagonal wonderland aptly named Sea. In the Maldives’ first underwater wine cellar and restaurant, we feasted on a lavish presentation of meats, cheeses, delicate pastries, fruits, and lobster Benedict all while exotic sea creatures traveled to and fro. We marveled at two Clownfish. The father floated outside the anemone home guarding his son just as depicted in the Disney film Finding Nemo—I could almost hear the father warning his child of the dangers that lie beyond the reef. We noticed a Moorish Idol like Finding Nemo’s cantankerous Gill and a Regal Blue Tang like the film’s forgetful Dory. After observing these fish, we are sure the film’s screenwriters were well versed in the personalities of the character species as the Moorish Idol seemed a bit bossy and the Regal Blue Tang was not the cleverest of the underwater dwellers. Throughout the meal, we delighted in this conversation of aquatic personalities and pointed to an endless array of colorful fish, identifiable by a book our waiter shared with us. An entire world exists beneath the water’s surface and the experience of being “part” of this world is one we will never forget. On our way out, the waiter described the ocean’s magical way of

For dining thrills Teppanyaki style, we visited Fire where the chef encouraged flames to pirouette across the grill and all manner of ingredients flew from her spatula. After the show, we devoured flamekissed Japanese specialties, sashimi, and on one occasion, handpicked lobsters from the sea. All enjoyed under Fire’s dramatically pitched roof with the intermittent caress of the ocean’s breeze. Seeking a celestial experience, we visited SKY for a starlit odyssey. Ascending to the highest of the compound’s restaurants, we entered the Maldives’ only overwater observatory. As we enjoyed a threecourse chef ’s choice meal, our SKY Guru shared fascinating insights and used a “lightsaber” to point to constellations and planets in the night sky. After dinner, we stargazed through the Maldives’ most powerful telescope and were even allowed to photograph the moon – a treasured keepsake. That evening, inspired by our SKY Guru, we decided to sleep under the stars on our deck’s floating bed. We were coaxed into a deep slumber by the lagoon’s gentle sounds and a distant whisper of the ocean’s roar. Many mornings, we dined beachside at Plates selecting Maldivian spiced courses, smoked fish, and detox juices. A particular favorite was the Kihavah Benedict accented with just the right amount of spice. We savored each dish watching as waves carried the sun’s reflection to the edge of the white sandy beach. On our final day, we left villa 211 and rode our bicycles pitterpattering down the wooden planks one last time thinking how lucky we were to have visited this floating paradise. Peddling along under a canopy of tropical fronds, we burst from the greenery’s warm embrace to greet our departing seaplane. We ascended into the sky with our hosts waving goodbye until they disappeared from sight—just the white sand, the ring of overwater villas, and the vast array of the ocean’s blues were still visible. Since our return home, I have noticed that every time I mention

HL_1021_Main_SoftProof.indd 109

the Maldives the response is always the same … “That is on my bucket list.” And so it should be. On our vacation, we checked off many things on our bucket list—visit the Maldives, swim with sharks and manta rays, enjoy an outdoor shower, stay in an overwater villa, and dine under the sea. Isn’t it time you checked these off your list? The earth’s greatest aquatic paradise awaits.

GREEN RESORT One of the first things my husband, a conservation advocate, noticed at our villa were the glass bottles and the absence of plastic. When he mentioned this to our Villa Host, Ismail informed us that Kihavah is the proud recipient of a gold Green Globe Certificate and is one of the greenest resorts in the country. He explained that not one tree was removed during the resort’s construction. On our many bicycle rides around the island, we noticed how the beach villas appear to have grown up around the trees. The resort is constantly reinforcing its commitment toward environmental conservation by reducing electricity waste, following a food waste management program, operating a water treatment plant on the island, and employing a zero-plastic policy. Even branches and shrubbery are shredded and reused as mulch. Sun, surf, sand, and sustainability–now that is truly beautiful. hef Claudio Ulivieri is in his element. He’s bounding around his cozy new dining room, Lucca Osteria in Oak Brook, with palpable pride. He’s decked out in his snazzy new chef duds, a sleek grey-denim number that’s been tailored with a level of care rarely taken by any chef I know. How tailored? Think Gregory Peck, suited up in pleated pants and a notched-lapel blazer, courting Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday. Ulivieri wants everything to be just right. He’s assessing diners’ reactions to their first bites of food. He’s grading his staff on their hustle. And he’s stealing time away from his kitchen to chat up early-bird Saturdayevening diners. Forget Princess Audrey. Good old Claudio just wants to court us, his loyal Oak Brook customers. He arrives at our particular table just as a server is carting over a huge hollowed-out wheel of Asiago cheese. We’ve ordered Ulivieri’s signature truffle-butter fettuccine, a show-stopping play on pasta Alfredo that’s prepared with

DIN NER DATE tableside pyrotechnics usually reserved for Michelin chefs serving northern-Italian risottos. Too excited to let his servers have all the fun, Ulivieri preps the pasta himself. He flambés a shallow pool of 70-proof rum in the cheese’s hull, tosses in the fettuccine with sausage and mushrooms then proceeds to divvy it up—with shocking exactitude—into equal portions. “You’re enjoying this aren’t you?” I ask. To which he smiles and says, “Every chef wants what I have right here.” After 21 years as an executive chef/partner for Phil Stefani’s restaurant group and a short retirement due to COVID, Ulivieri has a place all his own in partnership with longtime restaurant vet Steven Hartenstein. It feels like Claudio’s place, through and through. Note the restaurant’s moniker, named in honor of the Italian city of Lucca on the Serchio River in Tuscany. Ulivieri sees Lucca as the most ideally situated slice of heaven imaginable. Visit the city, as Ulivieri does every year, and you’ll find the best culinary pleasures Italy has to offer. Ultra-fresh seafood. Enough Tuscan beef to fill a Costco. Fresh produce galore. And vineyards so old you’d need radiocarbon dating to affix an age to them. The restaurant is located, appropriately enough, in a space that holds great meaning to Ulivieri: the old Tuscany dining room in Regency Towers, where Ulivieri oversaw the menu since 1993. After the Stefani Group closed Tuscany in 2018, Ulivieri and Hartenstein realized there was no better space to construct their dream restaurant. Although it’s not a strictly Tuscan menu, we leaned heavily into Ulivieri’s more carnivorous offerings—and were not disappointed. I’m sure, for example, that all of his pizzas—airy takes on Neapolitan-style pies made with his own choice of flour—are good, but there’s no use resisting his prosciutto-arugula pizza made with fig jam and burrata cheese.

Cocktails

I’m a sucker for dishes that channel the Italians’ love for pairing creamy cheeses with sweet condiments. Ulivieri’s pie reminded me of the breakfasts we used to eat in Rome—rustic breads smeared with ribbons of jam. Topped with prosciutto and tons of peppery arugula, it’s an amalgamation of antipasti classics on perfectly crisped wood-fired dough. I’ve been told that Lucca may boast the best shellfish in all of Italy. The house’s squid-ink pasta—oil, garlic, littleneck clams, and crunchy bits of fried breadcrumbs—is a worthy surrogate, richly flavored yet light. The same can be said for the kitchen’s entrees. I appreciated the sweetness of its Cornish game hen—rather than a regular old chicken—that’s crisped in a wood-fired oven, producing an impeccably juicy bird set in a simple wine-based pan sauce. And the kitchen’s classic take on veal scaloppini comes with an extra blast of forest-floor goodness, thanks to the inclusion of pioppini mushrooms as well as porcinis and oyster mushrooms. It’s impossible to overstate just how much the restaurant’s management team—many handpicked by Ulivieri himself— elevated our dining experience. I was touched, for instance, to learn the backstories of key design elements. The mirrors that greet guests in the dining room are repurposed from wood saved from Tuscany’s old wine lockers. Ulivieri didn’t have the heart to see them go. Ditto for the painted doors that hang from some walls. Each piece is dedicated to someone—his late wife, father, cousin, Hartenstein’s children, and others—who’ve impacted his life. Quite a statement when you consider just how much of an impact Ulivieri has had on those of us who’ve ventured to his Oak Brook kitchen and been treated to a heartfelt taste of Tuscany and beyond. Lucca Osteria & Bar is located in Oakbrook Center, 1415 22nd Street in Oak Brook. Call 630.866.7234 or visit luccaosteria.com.

Lucca’s cocktails lean into Italy’s penchant for gilding drinks with bubbles, fruity notes, and the occasional savory blast of flavor.

Fresco e Dolci:

An incredibly light vodka-based offering that feels like it was built for a spa day. Think cucumber and strawberry plus a shot of St. Germaine. A shot of lime juice and tonic produce plenty of citrusy bubbles, so you can enjoy it sans food.

Dirty Martini:

This is a dirty martini on Italian steroids: Wheatley vodka infused with olive oil plus shots of umami in the form of blue cheese, olive juice, and a touch of anchovy. Pairs perfectly with a sausage pizza or any beef dish.

INTEGRATED EYE CARE Glimpse Vision, with locations in Hinsdale and the Gold Coast, offers a holistic approach in providing eye care to their clients. WORDS BY MITCH HURST/PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR

T

he mission of Glimpse Vision in Hinsdale is two-fold: Offer the best selection of hand-crafted eyewear from around the world along with an integrative approach to eyecare, incorporating the most advanced technology that leads to optimal vision. Dory Kenna is an optician and partner with Glimpse Vision, managing the Hinsdale office. She has more than two decades of experience working in the field of optometry. “I began working part-time for an optometry office in 1991 while I was in college, and I truly fell in love with the industry,” Kenna says. “Other than staying home for a number of years to raise my three boys, my career path has not veered from optical. I find it to be the perfect combination of medical knowledge, understanding current fashion trends, and creating long-term relationships through exceptional customer service opportunities.” What differentiates Kenna from her competition is that being a partner, she has a vested interest in the success of the business as well as the satisfaction of the Glimpse clients. She also offers by appointment scheduling which accommodates clients who are unable to make it in during regular business hours. “I prioritize patient care above all else to ensure our clients are happy with their experience at Glimpse. I think my ‘secret sauce’ in delivering outstanding service to our clients is the passion I have for what I do,” she says. “I truly find joy in forming relationships with our clients. I also understand that they are trusting me to use my expertise and knowledge to guide them to an amazing optical and eyewear experience.” Kenna says what sets Glimpse Vision apart as a company is that they offer unique eyewear that is hand-crafted by small independent designers from all around the world. The designers are selective in their decision as to who they allow to feature their products. While many optical businesses have one location making the frame selections and purchases for all of their offices, Kenna and her partners meet one-on-one with the representative from each of the collections they carry, making frame choices based on their specific demographic and overall client requests and needs.

Dory Kenna

Glimpse Vision’s integrated approach to eyecare means working to treat everything that affects their customers’ overall vision. This includes comprehensive eye exam services, overall wellness, and matching prescription eyewear and contacts to fit lifestyle and occupational needs. “We work with the most advanced lens technology available, giving our clients the best optical experience,” Kenna says. “We have a doctor who takes a wellness approach in her practice, introducing her patients to safer and healthier eyecare products for the treatment and prevention of eye disease.” Kenna began her optical career at Family Vision Care in LaGrange. In 1995 she joined Eyeland of St. Johns in downtown Hinsdale, which later evolved into Spex. Living in Western Springs with her family, Kenna loves her five-minute commute to the Glimpse Hinsdale store. This simple commute also makes it easy for her to meet with clients before and after hours. Glimpse Vision is an active participant in the community and sponsors local events and fundraisers. “It is important for us to support the Hinsdale community through participation in local events as well as philanthropic donations,” Kenna says. Glimpse Vision is located at 12 E. First Street in Hinsdale, 630-3252020, glimpsevision.com.

Profile SENIORS AND VACCINATIONS WORDS BY CHIRAG PATEL, MD PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS

W

ith COVID-19 and its vaccine protocol at the forefront of healthcare currently, I felt it is equally important to discuss the other recommended vaccinations for adults. In our senior population treated in my practice, prevention is imperative for improved outcomes. The other vaccinations include Influenza, Tetanus, Varicella, Zoster or Shingles, and Pneumococcal.

INFLUENZA OR LAIV4

The Flu shot is familiar to most of the population. Given yearly, it is recommended for all adults. Certain allergies and medical conditions do prohibit specific adults from getting this vaccine. Immunocompromised adults, pregnant women, and those without a spleen are some of the people who are counseled against getting the Flu shot. TETANUS OR TDAP

Most adults of this generation were vaccinated as a child with Tdap. An initial vaccine can be given at any adult age. Booster shots are recommended every 10 years, or when a perceived infection risk occurs and the booster history cannot be confirmed. Lower extremity wounds are common in the elderly, especially

with other conditions like diabetes and peripheral neuropathy, reducing their ability to feel. Those with wounds are often given booster shots since vaccination records are not readily available. VARICELLA

Most adults of this generation were vaccinated as a child with Varicella. If not, an initial 2-dose series of the vaccine can be given at any adult age. It is contraindicated in pregnancy and severe immunocompromising conditions. ZOSTER OR SHINGLES

It is recommended for adults over the age of 50 and is a 2-dose series of RZV (Shingrix) 2 to 6 months apart regardless of prior herpes zoster or history of zoster vaccine live (ZVL, Zostavax). Many patients have complained of getting a small shingles infection, but most have a blunted version when having the vaccine. PNEUMOCOCCAL OR PPSV23

This vaccine is recommended to adults over the age of 65. Adults should be immunocompetent. One dose of PPSV23 every 5 years is recommended. Pneumonia and respiratory illness is the most common cause of death in the senior population thus making this vaccine highly important. Hansa Medical Groupe has offices at 5250 Old Orchard Road, Suite 300, in Skokie, and in Chicago, 847-920-0902, hansamedicalgroupe.com.
