Jessie Cheung, MD, FAAD

“My goal is to help you look better and live better.

Regenerative aesthetics is all about sculpting faces with treatments that make your own skin healthier for lasting results, such as biostimulatory fillers and skin boosters, and threadlifts for instant lift and long-term collagen stimulation.”

Jaime Cruse, LE

“My favorite treatment is our UltraFaceLift - a combination of Ultherapy for deep lifting, a BBL photofacial to treat reds and browns, and Tixel for smoothing and tightening, which also allows us to deliver exosomes into the skin to stimulate more collagen production.”

Susan Cummings, LE

“My patients love the combination of a BBL photofacial with Halo resurfacing. There’s not much downtime and their skin looks so glowy, bright, and smooth after, and you get more benefits with this combination for improving fine lines, wrinkles, pigment, tone, and texture.”

Tamsen Tyler, LE

“My favorite procedure is PRX for bio-revitalizing skin. Patients experience skin tightening, pore size reduction, evening out of skin tone and an overall beautification of the skin, with instant glow, and without any downtime.”

Kelli Kleckner, RN

“I like to deliver natural results with fillers, and my motto today when performing any aesthetic treatment is “slow and steady.” Improving your appearance is a process, and very rarely a “one and done.”

Nicole Lamberis, RN

“I enjoy using PDO Threads as well as Sculptra. The threads are able to give a significant facial lift while also stimulating your body to build collagen. Sculptra is a liquid biostimulator. These products require the use of less filler, giving a much more natural overall aesthetic.”

EDITOR’S NOTE

Welcome to May, hold on tight.

To provide moments of calm in the busiest month of the year, we’ve put together a beautiful issue filled with interesting people.

Talented Azeeza Khan is our incredible cover story. Azeeza lives in our area and her beautiful fashion collection is a huge hit in some North Shore boutiques. You’ll love reading her story. She’s working toward a global fashion brand. Her collections are filled with the glamorous, wearable clothes every busy woman wants, so she is sure to achieve that worldwide reach.

Speaking of worldwide, I’ve just returned from Paris where preparation for the Olympics is in full swing. Journeys takes us to The Ritz Paris, where our writer experiences all the charm of the city.

We’re also looking inside the brand-new CD Peacock Mansion, the most beautiful store, which brings together the most revered names from around the world.

We have some new items and updates this month that I hope you’ll enjoy. Our gorgeous March cover star, Jennifer Steinhagen brings her @abookandachai recommends to The Buzz, so from now on, we can all read a book of the month together with her

online community. We have a new page, Next Gen, where we’ll introduce you to early career people who are doing great things. First up is Maddie McMahon, who is an expert in Chicago rentals. Put her in your contacts. And in Country Vs. Town we’ve asked a new set of questions to keep everyone’s favorite pages fresh. The delightful Amity Comiskey is first to answer them, and she does so with every bit of wit and warmth that makes her a special member of our community.

Publisher’s Profiles are popping this issue, From Napleton Automotive Group raising funds for pediatric cancer to Brain Health Restoration, Energie Pilates to Remax Legends, these are so informative and even more numbers to add to your contacts.

Living + Giving features some gangbuster events that lit up the end of February. The Misericordia Women’s League benefit, Heart of Gold, was over the top successful. Our congratulations to the chairs and honorees.

We packed every page and hope you enjoy each one. Please be in touch with your summer and fall happenings and interesting people.

Gratefully,

THE MOST ARTFUL ACCESSORY

“Without hats there is no civilization.” Christian Dior

Of all the things to love about the month of May—peonies, graduations, and brunches among them, hats deserve a mention. Between Derby Day parties and must-attend hat luncheons, ‘TIS THE SEASON FOR CHAPEAUX. For something truly special, book an appointment at the Oak Street atelier of couture milliner, Loreta Corsetti. This maestra of physics and imagination crafts the most exquisite toppers anywhere. She does all her own blocking and makes silk and leather flowers by hand. It’s no wonder that style icon Daphne Guinness is a customer. Corsetti is the first milliner from the United States to be awarded the prestigious Cappello del Mondo and have her work on display at the Museo del Cappello in Italy. 40 East Oak Street, Chicago, 312.640.6004, loretacorsetti.com.

LIGHT A CANDLE

Amy Allegra’s beloved mother passed away 27 years ago—one week after Amy graduated from Hinsdale Central. She has long wished to pay tribute to her mother, who owned a boutique in downtown Hinsdale in the early 1990s. It’s a fitting tribute that the shop’s name lives on as the new foundation, Abundance of the Heart. The mission is to help support organizations offering support to children, teenagers, and young adults who have lost a loved one. First up is a beautiful candle, adorned with the heart Amy’s mum used to draw. abundanceoftheheart.org and the-heart.org.

@BOOKANDACHAI RECOMMENDS

The April book club pick is an absolute no brainer. Jennifer is obsessed with this writer. If she writes it, she reads it. The book is called The Other Side of Disappearing by Kate Clayborn. From the author of Georgie, All Along, it’s a pitch-perfect, transporting love story about an unexpected road trip, true crime obsessions, and hard-won vulnerability. Hooked, yet? Joining this book club is low effort, high reward. Pick up the book, start reading, and hop on over to Instagram to respond, chat, and connect any time that works for you. It’s a warm and fuzzy safe space where readers can join the conversation at any point. No preparing apps and pick your own beverage. @bookandachai

AMITY COMISKEY

grew up in a small town in central Illinois called LaSalle-Peru. She describes it as a town straight out of a John Cougar Mellencamp song. “We were within walking distance to all the shops and restaurants just like Hinsdale. The differences would be that instead of the adorable Vintage Charm we had a five & dime called Jupiter and instead of Nabuki sushi we had the diner counter inside Woolworth’s,” She says, adding, “My sisters and I spent every penny we had on cassette tapes, Wet n’ Wild makeup we weren’t allowed to have yet, and milkshakes at Woolworth’s counter. It was an amazing way to grow up and just like the Mellencamp lyrics say, ‘I had myself a ball in a small town.’”

When she and her husband, Kerry, were ready to make the move from the city, Hinsdale was the only place on their list. Kerry loved the Norman Rockwell feel of the Village and Amity was drawn to how active the community is. They set down roots and became a family of three. “Like most women I admire in our community, I do wear many hats. When I am not busy with work, my son William’s sports, or volunteering, you can find me on Instagram hopefully traveling somewhere. My grandmother instilled in me very early on to make the most of life and see as much of the world as I can,” Amity says.

COUNTRY VS. TOWN

Mantra? I am in charge of how I feel and today I choose happiness. On your reading stack? Taylor Jenkins Reid and Colleen Hoover are always on my nightstand. What organizations do you support? We have so many amazing organizations in our area and we are so very blessed to be able to do some good for so many. Hephzibah House in Oak Park forever has a piece of my heart. I will always support Hinsdale Infant Welfare Society, Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club, Hinsdale Historical Society, Wellness House, Together at Peace, and Hinsdale Community Services. What’s your signature entertaining style? Gathering my friends and family just makes me happy. The menu and occasion is insignificant to me, it’s the people and the laughter I adore most. I am a sucker for a beautiful tablescape and will usually put more time and effort into the decor than menu planning. What has surprised you about living in this

Amity wears an Akris dress from

area? What an inspiring sense of community we have here in Hinsdale. If someone is in need or sick or suffered a loss in their family, this community rallies to make sure you feel that you are not alone and you have people who care about you and your family. Any daily rituals that make you feel centered? My husband and I like to start most days walking to town. My son joins us when he is not in school, and they throw a football through the streets the whole way. Music you love? There wasn’t a better decade for music than the 80’s… throw on a little Billie Jean or Material Girl and I will be wanting to Dance with Somebody just like Whitney. Favorite spring traditions? Now that spring has sprung you will find us on the golf course most days. Kerry and William play, I walk along. I enjoy playing but I am a far better spectator. What advice would you give to your younger self? LET IT GO! The cares of what other people think of you, the stress, the thoughts of ‘am I good enough’, leave it all in the rear-view mirror and don’t look back. Instead embrace each year you are given that makes you wiser, find your people, respect them, and love them fiercely.

WHEN IN TOWN WHEN IN THE COUNTRY

What’s your go-to outfit? My “uniform” these days is jeans, especially by Mother, my fave tank tops from Target and a J.Crew blazer. I’ll add a belt if I’m feeling fancy. Where is your favorite place to walk? My favorite walk is up and around Robbins Park and through the Robbins Historic District neighborhood but our most frequent walks are to town for coffee or quick errands. Can’t leave the house without? My sunnies! If there is such a thing as your eyes being allergic to the sun I have it. Where do they know you by name? Café La Fortuna, but Angela is so great with all her customers, she probably knows each one by name. Favorite memories of living in the area? Of course, the day my son was born is my most treasured memory and that happened here at the Hinsdale Hospital. As for other events I would say we have enjoyed all the festivities Hinsdale has to offer. IWS’s Tablescapes sets the stage for spring events, The Kitchen Walk is always a great way to kick off Mother’s Day Weekend, Uniquely Thursday’s is uniquely special, the Fourth of July parade makes you so proud to be an American, The Wine Walk is a great display of our fantastic businesses, and the Christmas Walk is like a fairytale or maybe its more like a holiday movie on the Hall-

If an ad agency asked you to write a commercial for your town, what would “Welcome to Pleasantville” population “always room for one more.”

What is your favorite walking route? 100% the River Front, they did a great job updating that entire area. It is great people watching, dining, cocktailing, or walking. What’s in your bag? My Burt’s Bee’s chapstick, pretty sure I am addicted. My phone is in my hand because it is actually a camera and rarely a phone these days. View that never gets old? Our fantastic skyline from a boat on Lake Michigan. Best quick bite or hidden gem? I am more for the ambience than the grub so I will always pick a place with a view in the city. Back to the Riverfront, my faves from the past year were RPM Italian, Pizzeria Portofino, RPM Seafood, Beatnik, London House, and City Winery. Do you have a favorite museum? A trip to the Art Institute on Wednesday followed by the “music in the park” in Millenium Park is a fantastic way to be a tourist in our own city. What is your favorite movie filmed or set in Chicago? #saveferris

Hinsdale’s Maddie McMahon is an expert at navigating the city’s rental market

dedicated, and energetic. It’s the ideal place for me,” she says.

The goal of every DMG team member is to help clients achieve their goals and Maddie has thrown herself into mix, providing excellent service. Skilled in many areas of the business, Maddie is especially accomplished with rentals. It’s a time saving gift to work with someone who understands what a professional is looking for in a place. “Dawn encourages us to be more knowledgeable about our markets than any other agent and that’s my approach,” McMahon says, adding, “I’ve lived the Hinsdale to college to living and working in Chicago progression and learned things every step of the way. I’m here to help new graduates—or anyone who wants to explore a place in the city—find a spot that’s perfect.”

he rental market in Chicago encompasses every sort of residence, from Gold Coast penthouses with room service to studios in up-and-coming neighborhoods. Somewhere in the middle is likely where new grads want to be. Moving to the city to live and work after college is a natural progression for young people who grew up taking the train into Chicago several times a year. After a few years, they might look to buy a Hinsdale or Oak Brook home, but in the beginning, when people are focusing on baseball games and street fairs, promotions at work, and hard to score dinner reservations, it’s best to find a great rental, furnish it with finds, and enjoy life.

Easier said than done unless you’re working with someone with great style, connections, and inside knowledge. Maddie McMahon is that person. She grew up in Hinsdale, where she graduated from St. Isaac Jogues and Hinsdale Central and was lucky to be lifelong family friends with real estate powerhouse Dawn Mckenna. During college, Maddie interned with the Dawn McKenna Group (DMG), and fell in love with real estate. She officially joined the firm in 2021. “I love being a part of the team, everyone is smart,

Dawn McKenna, founder of the Dawn McKenna Group explains, “Our agents are real people with interesting lives, stories to share, and valuable experience in the field. Our clients get to know a friend, not just a sales representative. At DMG our agents know their territories and the lifestyles they offer because they live there and live those lives. They connect on a personal level and Maddie is an incredible example of this.”

Working with an agent cuts down on touring flats that will never work. It also frees the searcher from the tedium of calling endless numbers posted on the side of buildings and rarely receiving a call back to schedule a viewing or even find out the rent.  In the post-college years, when everything changes in life, it’s smart to ask for help.

“I’ve known Maddie her whole life and have watched her grown into an amazing person. I truly believe in her and what she can do for our clients,” Dawn says.

Maddie McMahon is a licensed real estate broker and client services expert. Find her in the Dawn McKenna Group’s Chicago office, 696 North Michigan Avenue, Suite 3010, 312.981.5500.

Azeeza Khan wearing Azeeza Ezra charmeuse midi dress in scarlet

THE FABRIC OF SUCCESS

Chicago-born designer Azeeza Khan’s new line expands her esteemed brand and lays the foundation for the creation of a legacy fashion house.

Paris, Milan, London, and New York—all are cities commonly associated with the rarified air of high fashion. Yet, serious devotees of the sartorial arts know that Chicago is a veritable hothouse of fashion talent. Recall that the late, great Illinois-born Virgil Abloh began his visionary brand Off-White in Chicago and then blazed a path to the top of the fashion pyramid—Louis Vuitton. Maria Pinto, a former Art Institute of Chicago student turned award-winning designer, dressed Oprah and Michelle Obama in the first decade of the 2000s. Cynthia Rowley, an Art Institute alum, built a global lifestyle brand touted by Vogue as the perfect blend of sporty and pretty. Emerging Chicago designers like Chloé Mendel are attracting attention and garnering applause. Now, designer Azeeza Khan is preparing to make her eponymous line a household name.

Khan has been charting a rocket course in the industry since establishing her brand just a decade ago. In 2019, she found herself collaborating with the legendary Barbra Streisand on 25 looks for her tour and personal wardrobe. Streisand had become a fan after seeing Khan’s clothes at Barneys, a longtime Azeeza stockist. Other fashion-forward fans include Beyoncé, Sarah Jessica Parker, Hailey Bieber, and J.Lo, who adore the line’s meticulously handdyed luxury fabrics that are rendered in ultra-feminine but modern silhouettes.

Khan describes her style as “understated, while still making a statement. When someone walks in the room wearing it, you’re going to turn and look.” Her pieces

have a fluidity and discernible flow. “It’s very feminine. You’ll feel confident wearing my pieces, and when you feel confident, you’re going to own that room. In this day and age, everything moves so quickly, so when I design a collection, I really pay attention when something makes me think twice or catches my eye.” She jokes she could almost offer a guarantee of two compliments per wearing. And, of course, there is her highly regarded emphasis on color. Khan says her process often starts with color and finds inspiration in her surroundings from food to nature.

During a recent trunk show at The Lake

Forest Shop, Khan points out dresses one by one, her passion for her work evident as she notes the feel of the rich, vividly colored fabrics (organza, crepe de chine, raw silk, chiffon, charmeuse). Then she stops at a crisp poplin dress from her new Day Collection, which reimagines the brand’s core designs and best-sellers in wearable fabrications like pure cotton and denim chambray. The collection invites her loyalists to find new occasions to wear her

designs, while its versatility and lower price point allow others to experience Azeeza for the first time.

“It re-invents the dress, right?” she exclaims, brimming with pride. “The new Day Collection is washable,” Khan notes. “You can dress it up and you can dress it down too. I think it’s definitely going to appeal to our core girl. She’ll buy it if she owns that same dress in silk but it’s going to be a lot more for the day-to-day.”

Khan came into the industry in a very organic, grassroots way. The daughter of first-generation immigrants from India, she grew up on the north side of Chicago. Although her family had no connection to the business of fashion, Khan’s favorite weekend destination was Old Orchard Mall and she learned how to sew during summer vacation and school breaks. After graduating from DePaul, she began a career in marketing at the energy conglomerate BP. Yet something wasn’t clicking, and she knew she had to make a change. Upon launching her label, Khan gave herself a year to match her salary at BP or she’d give up.

“I was naive and gullible at the start,” she recalls. She was unaware of the magnitude of what she was attempting and of how competitive the business could be. “I had a false sense of confidence in the beginning. I didn’t know how much I was biting off.” In the end, however, her passion and the business skills she learned in school carried her through.

The brand’s growing national profile is reflected by a presence at Saks Fifth Avenue, REVOLVE, Bergdorf Goodman, elysewalker, Kith, Olivela, Shopbop, and multiple divisions of Anthropologie. On the North Shore, Azeeza can be found at Winnetka’s athene. Her flagship store at 900 Michigan Avenue in Chicago has been featured in the Louis Vuitton Chicago City Guide and listed as a top destination by Forbes.

Now, with this heightened profile and a broadening base thanks to the Day Collection, Khan is setting her sights even higher.

“I want to be a legacy fashion house of America,” she asserts when asked about her goals for the future. “That’s what I’m looking to do. Something iconic.”

Pressed on what that means, Khan doesn’t skip a beat in mentioning Ralph Lauren and Vera Wang. In Khan’s mind, they have set a template that she can evolve in her own way. “I do think that it can be a national luxury house, by all means.”

Based on her past successes, Khan knows this is an attainable goal. But she also knows it won’t be easy. “My business is self-invested, so the scaling has to be done in a very calculated and strategic way. Everything we make, we pretty much put back in. So, that’s been the formula for growing by maintaining that self-investment.”

Khan is keenly aware of the American Dream nature of her story; a story that includes successes from the fashion runway to the aisles at CB2 where she has a line of outdoor furniture and accessories to the social media world where she has an enthusiastic and youthful following on Instagram.

“If I woke up in high school and said what my wildest dream would be ... this is it, right? So these opportunities aren’t only something that were imaginable, they’re attainable. I do hope that I can inspire others to do the same in the generations to come. That, you know, if any race, gender, whatever it is ... that anything is possible, I think that’s the lesson.”

Mental health and brain health have never been more widely discussed, and for good reason. Experts agree that the brain holds the capacity to solve some of our most significant challenges—and the team at Brain Health Restoration (BHR), in Schaumburg, know this all too well. They are on a mission to fill an enormous gap in mental health and wellness treatments for anyone struggling with anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sleep disorders, autism, traumatic brain injuries (TBI)/concussions, as well as peak mental and athletic performance.

“At the heart of who we are and what we want this clinic to represent is a center for healing,” says co-founder Terry R. Yormark II. BHR is one of the only clinics in the Midwest offering a range of innovative treatments like TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation), PrTMS (Personalized Magnetic Stimulation), Clinical Psychiatry, Ketamine, Spravato, and Optimal Wellness all under one roof. Pairing Psychiatric Care with nuanced therapies like Ketamine is a rare offering but a vital part of BHR’s comprehensive approach.

“We’re rooted in Psychiatric and Wellness principles,” says cofounder Karen Todd, “which means that we are delivering these modalities with the help of other clinicians, psychologists, and psychiatrists, who are in the community and advise us in customizing the treatment plan for each client. We then match treatments to where the brain is experiencing deficiencies and monitor progress through a weekly EEG (electroencephalogram)/EKG (electrocardiogram). Where other clinics are delivering treatment with a one-size-fits-all approach, we are following a more customized treatment protocol that we believe will become a gold standard in the industry.”

TMS and PrTMS are particularly notable offerings at the clinic. The non-invasive procedure uses magnetic fields to stimulate brain

cells, creating new neuropathways in the brain that can dramatically improve symptoms of autism, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other disorders. These modalities can also be used to enhance peak performance for high power CEOs and athletes looking to take their game to the next level.

“I believe there is a big misunderstanding that these modalities are only for people who are experiencing a decline in mental health,” says Todd. While treating disorders is fundamental to BHR’s mission, so is helping any patient find mental clarity and optimal performance. “I sought treatment after having symptoms related to menopause,” Todd shares. “As I experienced a very big gap in the market for non-pharmaceutical options for healing.”

A Psychiatric consultation is needed for all treatments, though patients without a psychiatrist or therapist can come to BHR to be paired with one and begin their path toward wellness.

Giving back to the community is paramount to this team, who believe that everyone should have access to these life-changing therapies. “We want to make a significant impact and help people who need our services and can’t afford them by offsetting costs, raising funds, and partnering with foundations to impact veterans with PTSD and people struggling with autism,” says Thomas Lavin IV, the third co-founder and partner to Yormark and Todd. “As we’re starting to expand that effort, we’re seeing how much need there is for these services in underserved communities.”

“Our intention when hiring was to find people who are heartminded with our vision and who strive to make a difference,” says Lavin. “We share that passion and we’re so excited to make a difference in the community.”

Brain Health Restoration is located at 1111 N. Plaza Drive, Suite 101, in Schaumburg. For more information, visit bhrillinois.com or call 224-208-1247.

When most people enter a divorce attorney’s office, they experience a wide range of emotions. They may feel broken, violated, lied to, betrayed, abused, or mistreated. They may feel embarrassed that they were unable to make their marriage work. They may also feel completely numb to the process or might even feel relieved.

All of these feelings are valid and perfectly normal, but they can also be incredibly destructive. Hurt feelings often cloud judgment, leading to unrealistic goals for the divorce grounded, not in a desire to win, but to make sure their spouse loses. We often ask clients to consider what would have to occur so that when we meet in a year, they could be happy with the outcome and their situation. A large number of clients respond with, “I want my spouse to burn in hell.” That is not realistic. No attorney can achieve that goal.

Somebody may feel they are entitled to more than an even split. They may even be right. Unfortunately, the courts don’t recognize this desire. Courts aren’t interested in why you believe you deserve more assets or money. Courts don’t care how or why the marriage is ending, and it doesn’t matter to the legal system how hurt your feelings may be.

The judges care about one thing—upholding the law.

Many people believe there is a great deal of wiggle room in the legal system or that hiring a more aggressive lawyer and fighting for years will result in a better outcome. This is usually not true. When it comes time for the judge to sign off on an agreement or rule after a trial, these decisions are typically determined by a formula. Child support is determined by a formula. Spousal support or maintenance is determined by a formula.

THE LIMITATIONS OF DIVORCE LAW

Strategic Divorce attorney

Michone J. Riewer explains the realities of divorce law and the importance of client mindset.

A good lawyer will help you understand your rights and represent your best interests so that you don’t make decisions that will negatively impact those formulas. But a good lawyer won’t promise you something that isn’t attainable or encourage you to fight your spouse to gain a split of assets that a judge would never agree to.

Contentious divorces happen when parties allow their hurt feelings or anger to get in the way of rational decision making. Some lawyers will take advantage of these destructive mindsets. Acrimony is their business plan. When a client comes to them saying they want 70 percent of the marital assets, the attorney doesn’t explain why that is an unlikely outcome. Instead, the attorney encourages their client to fight for 75 percent. The attorney knows the law and knows no judge would award that division of assets. The attorney also knows that the longer the divorce drags on the more money that attorney will collect in legal fees. Encouraging acrimony has a clear benefit for the attorney and a clear drawback for the client.

Choosing the right attorney is very important. Having the right mindset going into a divorce is equally important. Spending thousands of dollars fighting over a piece of kitchen equipment does not result in a win for anyone but the divorce lawyer. At the beginning of the divorce, we provide each of our clients with the name of a therapist so that they have someone to help them with their mindset. Throughout the divorce, we provide solid counsel to our clients so that they have an opportunity to understand the likely outcome and then reach that outcome more quickly and with less acrimony. This approach provides our clients with more assets to divide in the long run and fewer legal bills.

SETTING THE TABLE

After a night spent at Table , Crate & Barrel’s flagship restaurant in Oak Brook, don’t be surprised if Bill Kim’s new menu and a refreshed patio put you in the mood to shop till you drop.

DINNER DATE
HINSDALE LIVING 62
Every utensil and vessel enhances the experience.

Ihave become, to the delight of some and horror of others, an exceptionally nosy diner. If I’m not chewing; I’m snooping. Once seated, I will immediately begin flipping over tableware—bread plates, ramekins, chopstick holders—searching for the names of designers and manufacturers. I run my fingers across the seams of napkins, looking for tags. And I have long considered packing a jeweler’s loop to help me read the microscopic names etched into handles of soup spoons and butter knives.

But at Table, the in-house restaurant at Crate & Barrel in Oak Brook, there are no tableware mysteries for me to solve. Every waterglass, teacup, saucer and serving platter—everything on our table, including almost every element of the restaurant’s décor — are Crate & Barrel products.

One of Table’s primary aims, says executive chef Bill Kim, is to bring everything you’d see in a Crate & Barrel catalogue to life. Which makes perfect sense to me. If fashion designers can showcase their threads by staging runway shows, why can’t a savvy retailers model their products by dressing them up with gorgeous-looking food?

If you find yourself smitten by something—perhaps that snappy pewtergray Ecogres plate, made from 90 percent recycled clay—chances are it’s available for purchase, either in the adjoining store or via Crate & Barrel’s catalogue.

As such, Table poses a question that’s long intrigued me: Can a restaurant meal impress you so completely that you’ll feel the urge to

DINNER DATE

re-create the entire experience at home?

With entrée prices that hover around $20 to $30, Table isn’t trying to duplicate the chichi ambiance (and egregiously overpriced fare) you’d find, at say, L’Avenue at Saks in New York or the Zodiac Room in Dallas’ flagship Neiman Marcus. Nor is it trying to woo globe-trotting gourmands and tasting-menu foodies. Its target demographic is much broader. It wants to woo multigenerational suburban diners who know the difference between food-court fluff and locally sourced chef-driven fare. The good news is that Table’s menu and

Cocktails

Guests wishing to “sip and shop” can order a glass of wine or cocktail from the bar and browse the Crate & Barrel’s aisles to their heart’s content. Here are two can’t-miss cocktails to get you in the mood.

Raspberry Thyme Collins:

A proper Tom Collins should be tall, light and bubbly. A heavy pour of gin and a splash of lemon, club soda and sugar. This delightfully improper Tom Collins adds a shot of a thyme liquor. The result tastes like a spring garden in bloom, both woodsy and crisp.

Lambrusco Royale:

To call this blend of Chambord, hibiscus liquor and lychee “jammy” would be an understatement. The flavor profile is pure candied blackberries. Order it as a nightcap or sip it with Table’s excellent dessert list.

décor has grown more interesting after each of our visits. Back in 2019, Kim wanted his menu to channel the simple, clean meals that he prepared at home.

This back-to-the-basics approach came on the heels of years spent whipping up clever mashups—think lamb and brandy dumplings and an Asian-style “Bolognese”— at his longstanding Urbanbelly concept. Table’s inaugural menu served technicolor classics on stark white plates: bright-orange salmon niçoise, leafy green salads, and a tomato-red veggie lasagna.

On our most recent visit, the menu drew more inspiration from Kim’s past. Two of our favorite dishes could have been served at Urbanbelly: basil-flecked dumplings stuffed with edamame and a first-rate bowl of udon noodles. But there are now undercurrents of spice on Table’s offerings that were more prominent than I remember. It’s not heartburn-level heat. These spices add nuance and dimensionality to old standbys. “In some cases, we’re looking for little bit of sizzle, a slight sting,” says Kim. “Nobody wants to

fry their palate, but finding ways to subtly incorporate unexpected flavors is a fun way to cook and eat.”

Table’s waffle fries, for instance, are dusted with curry powder and Kim’s inspired take on shrimp and “cauliflower” grits is spiked with Thai chilis. The latter is a perfect expression of Table’s charms. Rather than fattening the grits up with loads of cheese and butter, Kim’s team cooks the grits in coconut milk, then bakes the grits in the oven

with riced cauliflower so that they have a risotto-like bite. A splash of homemade nuoc cham, Vietnam’s beloved fish sauce, comes next, along with fragrant hints of lemongrass, garlic and chilis.

Most restaurants, aesthetically speaking, are frozen in place the moment they open. What you see on day one, give or take a few details, rarely changes over time. Same light fixtures. Same plates. Same silverware. Not here. If there is an advantage to being nested inside a furniture and home décor store, it’s that you can freshen up the place whenever you want. Case in point: Kim alters his tablescapes to reflect the change in seasons. If there’s a new silverware that catches his eye, swaps are made. And this summer, Table’s patio was given a facelift, as old pieces of furniture were replaced by new entries from Crate & Barrel’s inventory.

DINNER DATE

Yet, midway through my meal, my mind couldn’t help but return to our tableware. What must it be like, I wondered, to have an entire catalogue at your disposal when updating a menu? What unfolds behind the scenes that we, as diners, never see?

I envisioned a brigade of chefs—working when the restaurant is closed—running through the store, grabbing products from shelves. And then returning to the kitchen to decide which piece look best.

When I asked Kim what actually happened when new menus were being devised, he set the record straight. All in all, my little fantasy was generally accurate, except that he goes tableware hunting when the store is still open. Whereas most chefs decide what they want to cook, and then find tableware to match, Kim does the opposite at Table. He uses the store’s products as inspiration for his food.

After experimenting with one of Crate & Barrel’s Ooni pizza ovens, Kim decided to add flatbreads to the menu and invested in giant pizza ovens to ensure he could re-create those same crisp textures on a larger scale. In most cases, finding the right plating for12-inch flatbreads can be difficult. Not at Table, where the answers to Kim’s problem were only a short stroll away.

When you study his tableware, as I did, you can see the role that these pieces play in the enjoyment of your meal. Consider the shape and depth of Kim’s ramen bowls. And the raised lips that curve around the salad bowls and plates, which helps diners

scoop up rogue pieces of lettuce.

Suffice to say, I ended our conversation, feeling vindicated. Yes, the ingredients make the menu, but the right tableware can make the meal.

A REGAL ODYSSEY: THE RITZ PARIS

Where timeless elegance meets personal splendor

Embarking on a journey through time and luxury, The Ritz Paris emerges as an icon in the world of hospitality. Since its grand opening in 1898, it has earned illustrious nicknames like the “king of hoteliers” and “hotelier to kings.” Beyond its opulent façade lies a legacy that spans over a century, hosting royalty, billionaires, celebrities, and VIPs from around the globe.

Venturing to the outdoor terrace restaurant for a late breakfast, I found myself transported to a royal Neapolitan setting. The impeccable service and comfortable atmosphere allowed me to relish the culinary delights, appreciating The Ritz Paris’s commitment to turning dreams into reality. It was more than a hotel; it was a living legacy of timeless elegance, impeccable service, and unfolding history.

After a detailed renovation, meticulously overseen by the esteemed designer architect Thierry Despont, The Ritz Paris seamlessly marries timeless charm with contemporary enhancements. Boasting expansive suites and renovated bathrooms, the hotel continues to embody the pinnacle of luxury, preserving the essence of a bygone era while catering to the discerning needs of today’s travelers.

Under the guidance of a new executive chef, Nicolas Sale, and a redesigned Michelin-starred gastronomic restaurant, L’Espadon, The Ritz Paris has solidified its position as a culinary haven.

Throughout the renovation, key figures such as general manager Christian Boyens and bartending legend Colin Field remained

unwavering, preserving the quintessence of The Ritz Paris.

In September 2023, the gastronomic gem Espadon reopened its doors, unveiling a redesigned space connecting seamlessly with the enchanting Grand Jardin. Under Chef Eugénie Béziat’s culinary prowess, Espadon offers a unique journey, blending African influences and Mediterranean accents for a breathtaking dining experience.

Simultaneously, the newly inaugurated Ritz Bar pays homage to the hotel’s visionary founder, César Ritz. Each evening, it transforms into a celestial haven with an eloquent ritual of sound and light. Stars and constellations grace the ceiling, while original cocktails, each dedicated to a zodiac sign, captivate visitors. Meanwhile, Bar Hemingway, steeped in history, continues to enchant under the guidance of Anne-Sophie Prestail and her team of skilled mixologists, preserving the timeless magic of this legendary establishment.

Under the guidance of a new executive chef, Nicolas Sale, and a redesigned Michelin-starred gastronomic restaurant, L’Espadon, The Ritz Paris has solidified its position as a culinary haven.

As the sun gracefully dipped below the Parisian skyline, the allure of The Ritz deepened. Within its dimly lit corridors, whispers of legendary guests—F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and the unmistakable presence of Coco Chanel—seemed to linger in the air. The Prestige Suite, my chosen haven for the night, stood as a silent witness to the rich history that unfolded within these walls, seamlessly connecting me to a bygone era of glamour. This exquisite sanctuary featured walls adorned with timeless oil paintings and linens sourced from the finest locales worldwide. Awaiting my arrival was a thoughtful ensemble—a bottle of chilled champagne, a bowl of fresh fruit, and a golden key crafted from fine chocolate, promising a stay beyond ordinary. The bathroom, a glistening haven of marble and gold, extended an invitation for indulgence, with a luxurious bath awaiting within a colossal tub.

The next morning, opulence continued with a sumptuous breakfast in bed—scrambled eggs with caviar, fresh croissants, and steaming coffee set the tone for an enchanting day. A visit to the Ritz Club and Spa, with its painted ceiling reminiscent of a bygone era, flooded me with memories from my first visit many years ago. After a swim, I strolled through the corridors adorned with sumptuous bouquets. I marveled at the cosmopolitan glamour that had attracted celebrities for over a century.

The Ritz Paris is more than a luxurious escape; it is a captivating tale woven with the threads of history, gastronomy, and personal splendor. As I bid adieu to this timeless establishment, my heart overflowed with gratitude for an experience that surpassed the boundaries of time—a narrative of royalty and the enduring charm of Paris. In the grand tradition of The Ritz, my story seamlessly became a part of the living tapestry unfolding within its legendary walls.

A Personal Cause

The Napleton Automotive Group will once again be raising funds this month for the Violet Foundation for Pediatric Brain Cancer, named in honor of Steve and Madeline Napleton’s daughter.

Each May and October, the Napleton Automotive Group donates a portion of car sales and service fees to fund childhood brain cancer research and to provide support for families with children who are suffering from brain cancer.

Violet Napleton was a smart, sweet, and silly girl who loved Disney movies and dance parties. Just over two years ago, she was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, or DIPG, a rare form of childhood brain cancer with a nearly 100 percent fatality rate. In just three-and-a-half-months, she succumbed to her disease when she was just three years of age.

The astronaut Neil Armstrong’s daughter, Karen, died of DIPG at the age of two in 1962, and there has been very little tangible advancement in treatment for the disease. The Napletons established the Violet Foundation to raise awareness of DIPG and to fund potential new treatments.

“May is brain tumor awareness month and it’s something that is very personal to us,” Steve Napleton says. “October is Violet’s birthday month, so for those two months we involve our employees, customers, and anybody else we can to fundraise.”

During the two months, Napleton donates a portion of the revenues from every automobile it sells and services to the foundation, and while Countryside Mazda serves as a de facto headquarters for the effort, it involves 55 Napleton car dealerships in the Chicago region and beyond.

In addition to providing grants for research, the foundation also provides grants to families who are going through the same situation the Napletons went through just a few years ago.

Napleton was fortunate that the day after Violet received her diagnosis, he was able to take the time off from his work to be with her during her treatment.

“The reality is when someone’s child is diagnosed with cancer invariably everything in life kind of stops,” says Napleton. “In most situations one of the parents stops working or has to cut back on hours to spend time taking their child to treatments. That can create some real financial problems.”

The foundation, which was established in October of 2022, has to-date provided grants to more than 100 families and raised over $2 million for both family support and research grants.

To raise awareness, the dealerships offer purple license plate frames to customers who purchase during May or October that draw attention to the Violet Foundation and childhood cancer.

“I’ve actually been surprised by how many people take us up on the purple frames,” Napleton says. “Customers really appreciate knowing that they’re not just buying a car but supporting an important cause. It makes it more than just a transaction.”

Napleton says that while all cancer diagnoses are tragic, there’s something different about a child receiving a cancer diagnosis. It reorders what should be the normal sequence of life.

“When it happens to a child it just seems so wrong and I think people recognize that,” he says. “We realize there’s a lot we take for granted.”

If the Violet Foundation can garner some more attention and resources behind research for DIPG, he says, future generations of children who are diagnosed will have a better chance of survival.

“There are some really bright minds who are on it. There are clinical trials that are going on and being imagined now,” Napleton says. “There’s some really good momentum.”

AMERICAN DREAMS

Lydia Memeti immigrated from Albania as a teenager with the promise of a new life in the land of opportunity. With over 30 years of experience, she has become one of the most successful realtors in the country, building RE/MAX Legends in Oakbrook with the support of her husband, also another RE/MAX agent, and their son, Nick.

Lydia Memeti loves helping her clients realize their real estate dreams, whether it’s a young first-time buyer or a couple looking for the ultimate empty nester retreat.

“I’m really proud of being able to help people achieve their goals,” explains Lydia, an Oak Brook resident who came to the Chicago area five decades ago and has since built an international reputation for her success as a real estate broker.

Her son, Nick Memeti, is commonly known as the architect and driving force to The Memeti brand name. Serving as CEO and owner of iLoan, a direct mortgage lender, his mission is to help to grow an already thriving family business that has collectively been involved in more than $10 billion in real estate transactions over the past 30 years.

“The goal is to keep expanding the RE/MAX Legends brand,” explains Nick, adding that The Memeti Group now has two RE/ MAX offices—one in Oakbrook Terrace and another one in Roselle that serves the O’Hare area market and Northern Suburbs.

Lydia’s own career in real estate is an American success story.

The mother of three didn’t get started until the age of 32, joining her husband in the business just one short year after he started real estate. She has since gained the highest honors in the industry, including induction into the RE/MAX Hall of Fame; RE/MAX Lifetime Achievement Award; RE/MAX Club; RE/MAX Diamond Club; and the RE/MAX Titan Club.

Even more impressive is that as a result of these achievements, Lydia is among the Top 1 percent worldwide producers for RE/ MAX—a feat that distinguishes her from any of the countless thousands of RE/MAX agents around the globe.

As one might imagine, she has witnessed countless changes in the industry over the decades.

“Back in the 1990s, we didn’t have all the technology we have today,” says Lydia, explaining that in those days realtors had to drive buyers around to see homes in their cars, rather than directing them online for the first look. “Online platforms have made it easier for consumers to check daily inventory and create a more specific and narrowed housing search.”

Nick says the recent housing boom and an ongoing inventory shortage has presented different types of challenges.

“A lot of people would love to buy right now but can’t,” he explains. “We have more buyers than sellers. It’s good for sellers because whoever sells is really getting their best price. However, it’s counterproductive for buyers. They could put in 10 to 15 offers before they finally get a house.”

With prices reaching historic highs, affordable properties are more in demand than ever.

Lydia says she recently had 100 buyers come through an open house in Bolingbrook for a home in the $370,000 price range. “We had to tell them to line up,” she adds. “I haven’t seen that in almost ... well, never.”

Despite these obstacles, Nick says The Memeti Group had one of its most successful years yet in 2023.

“This is the fastest growing RE/MAX location in the Midwest,” he adds. “We’re growing our reputation with some of the most trusted professionals in the industry.”

RE/MAX Legends has offices at 17W480 22nd Street in Oakbrook Terrace and at 455 N Roselle Road in Roselle. For more information, call 708-267-0971 or visit memetigroup.com.

PILATES PILOT

Tifani O’Rourke and Energie Pilates in Hinsdale offer customized Pilates workouts for those who want to stay toned and fit.

While she started her professional career in the finance industry, Tifani O’Rourke enjoyed exercise and maintained a focus on staying fit. Born and raised in the Chicago area, she had her second son while working on the trading desk for Bank of America and decided to make a lifestyle change to stay home with her children.

She moved around the country for a few years and returned to the Chicago area with her family 12 years ago. Six years later she purchased Energie Pilates in downtown Hinsdale.

“I’ve always been proactive about staying fit. I played sports throughout high school and intramurals in college, and have been a runner since college,” O’Rourke says. “Pilates had been in the background and then it really started getting bigger in the early 2000s. When we came back to this area, I had three kids and I needed something for myself, so I started working at the studio that I now own.”

O’Rourke attended Warren Township High School in Gurnee and studied finance at Northern Illinois University, a major that she says comes in handy while running the business. She’s also hands on, and stays involved by teaching classes herself.

“When I teach, I love just getting to know different people and different types of bodies, trying to help someone figure out how to make the workout work for them,” she says. “I think it’s great to see how people transform or progress as they keep moving along. It’s nice to see when someone has been struggling with a different movement, and it becomes easier for them.”

While Pilates has some similarities to yoga, O’Rourke says it’s a lot about doing different movements with controlled, balanced precision. The main focus is working the stabilizer muscles, making other movements easier because participants are working smaller muscles a little deeper down. And while not

a cardio workout per se, there is exertion involved.

“Our studio has what are called reformers, which is a piece of equipment on which you do movements based on spring tension,” O’Rourke says. “You use different springs to change the load of your exercise. Depending on the movement, it can be cardio, but I wouldn’t say it’s cardio based.”

O’Rourke’s clients include both men and women, and she says a lot of athletes are joining Pilates classes because it can improve their performance on the field or court.

“A lot of basketball players, even football and baseball players, are Pilates enthusiasts. Jake Arrieta, the former Cubs pitcher, is a huge Pilates activist, and actually convinced the Cubs to put a reformer in their weight room,” says O’Rourke. It’s mostly still women, but we’re seeing more men. And our clients include everyone from teenagers to people in their 80s.

Regardless of age, O’Rourke says most people who start with Pilates have different places of weakness in the muscles in their bodies, such as a back strain, and are looking to get stronger.

“Generally, people coming to Pilates are looking find more strength and get stronger,” she says. “As you get older and naturally deteriorate, having a strong core will help you live a higher quality of life.”

O’Rourke says one of the aspects of owning and running Energie Pilates she appreciates is that, with its downtown Hinsdale location, the studio has a sense of community just like the surrounding town.

“The studio has been here for 16 or 17 years, and I am a part of the community. My kids go to the schools in town,” she says. “Our teachers in the studio are all local, and everyone in the studio is very welcoming.”

Energie Pilates is located at 18 W 1st Street in Hinsdale, 630-7343493, energiepilatesspa.com.
