PAVING THE WAY FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF WOMEN IN FAMILY LAW Meighan Harmon has been with Schiller DuCanto & Fleck since 2001 and has seen vast changes in both the family law profession and in the firm itself. Harmon is deeply involved with Schiller DuCanto & Fleck’s evolution, as they shift from their founding generation to the next generation.

n her 20 years at Schiller DuCanto & Fleck, LLP, Meighan Harmon has focused her practice on both litigation and mediation while also contributing to the firm’s management. Today, she is a member of the of the Executive Committee and the first female Managing Partner.

As a Managing Partner, Harmon’s role is to oversee the day-to-day operations of the firm, as well as budget and manage the firm’s finances. Harmon heads the Executive Committee, comprised of two other senior female partners and one of the firm’s founding partners.

“With every decision that gets made, we try to develop a mutual vision of the future, and work to build a consensus and collaboration amongst all of our partners,” says Harmon.

As one of the three women who serve on the firm’s Executive Committee, Harmon develops the committee’s agenda and helps guide the overall strategic vision for the firm.

She also conducts the partner’s and all attorneys meetings and motivates her team with a “lead by example” approach.

Although her leadership roles and duties at the firm keep her busy, Harmon still dedicates most of her time to her clients. In fact, she’s tried the most cases of her career in 2021 alone.

What Harmon has come to appreciate throughout her 20 years with the firm is Schiller DuCanto & Fleck’s commitment to progression and change. Although the firm was founded by men forty years ago, today the majority of the partners, as well as members of the Executive Committee, are women. This is a significant shift from when Harmon first joined the firm, and there were no female partners.

“It’s a tribute to our founders,” says Harmon. “While they were all men, they understood the importance of investing and nurtur-

ing the women of the firm as lawyers and as leaders.”

Harmon has witnessed first-hand the rare atmosphere at Schiller DuCanto & Fleck, where there is no male-dominant culture that is typical of most mid to larger size law firms.

She emphasizes that being a woman was never a barrier when it came to rising through the ranks with the firm. Harmon and her female colleagues have enjoyed the same opportunities as their male counterparts, especially early on in their careers, when many women choose to start families. Especially since Schiller DuCanto & Fleck is a family law firm, women at the firm know they will be supported when starting a family without fear of being penalized or hindered from cultivating a successful legal career.

Harmon notes the importance for young female lawyers to learn from other successful female leaders like herself. “It gives young women the professional confidence that they’ll be okay and that there is a path for them to have both professional and personal success—it may not be easy, but they don’t have to choose one over the other.” Harmon is a perfect example of that, given that she is a working mother herself.

In terms of the future for the firm, the sky is the limit. Despite being a Chicago-area-based firm, Harmon also sees an uptick in consulting on cases nationally in the firm’s future and hopes to see more traveling to try major cases in the coming years. Harmon is excited about continuing to help the next generation of lawyers grow within the firm as she has over the last 20 years. And with additional brand-new office space in Chicago, Schiller DuCanto & Fleck hopes to expand its bench of highly skilled and successful family law attorneys.

risis is often a catalyst for change, forcing us to adapt the way we think, work, and live. The results are often positive and enduring, allowing us to chart a new path forward.

However, Megan Lally, who recently moved to Hinsdale from Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood with husband, Ken Schroeder, and son, Charlie, believes we can do better. She believes we need to do less reacting and more innovating—looking at not just what is in front of us today but what we can and should do now to create a more positive, productive tomorrow.

As a co-owner and one of four managing partners at Highdive, an independent, Emmy-nominated, creative agency in Chicago’s River North neighborhood, she brings this visionary mindset to her clients and partners.

“Our mission is to create the healthiest client and agency relationships in the world. Not simply because doing so creates better lives for our clients and employees, but because of the scientific link between healthy relationships and creativity,” explains Lally, an Ad Age 2020 40 under 40 winner and one of four founding agency partners. “Simply put, when negativity reigns, creativity shuts down. When positivity wins, creativity can flourish, and great results follow.”

A native of the northwest Chicago suburbs, Lally is a former cheerleader who was active in student council.

She was the leader of the pack from a very young age, channeling her passion for creativity into everything from high school event planning to making eye-catching posters and flyers that guaranteed a good turnout.

From there, she earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison before dipping her feet into the agency world.

“Prior to Highdive, I worked at large advertising agencies, including Leo Burnett and DDB. I was always entrepreneurial within these big companies, but in 2017 I became an entrepreneur,” says Lally. “After more than ten years at agencies managed by large holding firms, my partners and I set out to create a better way for ourselves, our clients, and our employees. One where we get to do the work we love, while reducing the work we don’t.”

In other words, Lally and her partners are disrupting the status quo—with impressive results.

“Millennials have always been successful in asking ‘why do things have to be done this way?’ and ‘what if we did this instead?’,” she says. “After carefully studying the good and bad in the agency model, my partners and I determined that we could build

an advertising agency from scratch to address the problems facing the industry more effectively than trying to course-correct an old, inflexible, traditional agency model.”

Highdive was founded in late 2016, with Lally coming on board in early 2017 as a managing partner and co-owner. Five years later, she and her partners have created two #1 Super Bowl spots on the USA Today Ad Meter for Jeep (starring Bill Murray) and Rocket Mortgage (starring Tracy Morgan) and have built the company to more than 65 employees.

“We set the bar high for ourselves: Make great work. Deliver outstanding outcomes. Create better lives for our clients, our employees, and our partners. And disrupt the industry with a new model while doing it,” Lally explains. “With this model, we’ve been named Advertising Age’s Small Agency of the Year three years in a row, Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies in 2021, and Adweek’s Breakthrough Agency of the Year in 2020. We are also #117 on Inc’s 5000 fastest growing private companies list.”

She credits this success not only to her teammates but also her family, especially husband, Ken. “I was so honored to be named to Ad Age’s 40 Under 40. It had been a career goal to make that list. And while it sounds like an individual achievement, the main reason I was named to this list is because of the team that is by my side every day contributing to Highdive’s award-winning work,” says Lally. “What does it mean for my career? Success is inevitable if you believe in yourself, the work you’re doing, and surround yourself with the right people.”

At home in Hinsdale, she injects her family life with that same positive energy.

“We love it here,” she says, explaining that they moved to Hinsdale about two years ago. “We quickly outgrew a third story walk-up in Lakeview with a 1-yearold and had heard Hinsdale referred to as ‘Lakeview West.’ We can now confirm that is true! It’s also conveniently located between both sets of grandparents and a relatively easy commute to the city.”

Like most other young families, she and her husband spend a lot of time walking around town, at the park, or out in the downtown area.

“We also love Fuller House, Uniquely Thursdays, and the Hinsdale community pool,” she adds.

e’re one appetizer into our meal at Blanco Cocina in Oak Brook and I’m already free-falling down a rabbit hole of pure nostalgia. Truth is, I haven’t wolfed down a plate of nachos with this much speed since the summer of 1991. Wrigley Field. Cubs versus Phillies. Box seats along the third-base line that’s so close to the action I can smell the fresh-clipped grass.

And get this: The Cubs are actually winning. My younger self is balancing a plastic tray of nachos with extra cheese on my kneecaps. I’ve just paid up the nose for that coveted extra burble of cheese over the top, guaranteeing me cheese for every chip. Pure youthful baseball bliss.

Time passes. Things change. Velveeta-colored cheese dip doesn’t do it so much for me anymore. But a plate of quality nachos still makes me go all gooey inside. There’s no need to request extra cheese at Blanco, but it’s worth paying the extra five bucks to load them up with short rib machaca: ultra-tender tufts of marinated beef—a sultry brew of tomatoes, onion, garlic, various peppers and the house’s salsa—braised for five glorious hours. It’s magnificent stuff, which Eddie Coronado, Blanco’s manager of culinary standards, also uses in the restaurant’s chimichangas and tacos.

Blanco’s nacho platter will arrive as a Jenga tower of deep-fried chips topped with guacamole, black beans, crema fresca, and pico de gallo. Your server will pour a tiny H I N S D A L E L I V I N G 62

Visually, the dish looks like Christmas in Sedona.

All those jagged chips jutting out like rocky outcroppings.

Beautiful primary colors, too. Red-rock crimsons. Cacti greens.

Desert yellows. It’s delightfully unctuous, and rich enough to feed a table of four with leftovers to spare.

To its credit, Blanco is content to live in that tasty Tex-Mex gray zone that borrows from both sides of border.

Its menu doesn’t wade into the hyper-regional Mexican delicacies that are best left to native-born chefs. It’s more focused on taco salads. Bowls of tortilla soup. Enchiladas. Burritos. Plus, a surprisingly good take on esquites, Mexican street corn creamed with mayo, lime juice, and cotija cheese.

Blanco’s colorful décor seems to be inspired by a busted piñata stuffed with Tex-Mex icons. Turquoise walls festooned with guitars and painted Texas longhorns. Chairs stitched to look like saddles. And a veritable greenhouse of potted plants dangling from the rafters.

Here’s a restaurant that just wants to please. You like creamy guacamole? You’re in luck.

As someone who likes their guacamole on the mild side, I found the kitchen’s blend of roasted poblanos and Anaheim chiles delightful. You can order a single scoop topped with caramelized onion and cotija cheese or go with our pick: a guacamole-topped cheese crisp.

Blanco offers five of these ultra-thin Mexican-American flatbreads, but our favorite was the short rib with charred onion. The kids will think it’s pizza but you’ll know better.

Follow it up with the house’s fajita. No lava-hot mulcajete here, but we didn’t mind as a generous slab of carne asada marinated in a tomato-soy marinade is presented like a giant Cheese crisp with short rib, guacamole, and charred onion

Cocktails

Although Blanco offers an expansive collection of tequila and mescal flights, the cocktail list celebrates those smoky spirits just as well.

Mezcal Old Fashioned:

Why mess with the recipe for a classic Old Fashioned? Because the bar’s use of Banhez Meszcal is just floral enough—with hints of citrus and smoke—to make an already smooth American tipple even smoother.

Dodge’s Cadillac Margarita:

It’s doubtful you can go wrong with any of Blanco’s margaritas, which run the gamut from a spicy strawberry & habanero number to a sweet Aces & Eights with orange curacao and red sangria float, but this Don Julio meets Grand Marnier offering was born to be paired with Blanco’s delicious short rib machaca.

carved-up steak. Although it’s not explicitly mentioned on the menu, all of Blanco’s tacos can be ordered a la carte. The kitchen’s slowcooked pork taco with roasted corn slaw and pickled onions is a can’t-miss, as is its fullbodied carnitas taco, which is good enough pass muster with even the most discriminating of abuelas. If you still have room, order Blanco’s wonderful Mexican chocolate tiramisu. It’s a charming cultural mash-up, which swaps out the burnt espresso notes beloved in Italy for the spiced hot chocolate that the Mexican table has perfected. Instead of ladyfingers, you’ll find a cookie buried into the base of a ramekin topped with Chocolate mousse, dulce de leche, candied walnuts and a coffee syrup made with Ibarra chocolate and Kahlua. It’s so good I expect a Tex-Italian food craze to come moseying around the corner any day now.

Iceland offers thrilling adventures in an enchanted landscape.

celanders take great pride in telling tales of the island’s elfin lore. Perhaps these stories are inspired by the fantastical country they occupy? This land of fire and ice contains an extraordinary range of landscapes from erupting volcanoes to shifting glaciers and many wonders in between, including black sand beaches, moss blanketed mountains, geysers, hot springs, and waterfalls aplenty.

One moment you are hiking a glacier in search of an ice cave and the next scaling the side of a quivering volcano. I found these vastly different experiences and the Icelandic terrain to heighten all five senses; yet, I simultaneously experienced an intense feeling of peace—a desire to take a deep breath and hold on to every second.

The visual landscape alters so quickly—you might find yourself gazing upon amber waves of grain, a purple sky, and a mountain’s glowing pink tip. Then the sun moves imperceptibly, replacing the colors with golden grains and an orange sky. Night falls and the sky is illuminated with the famed Northern Lights alternating in streaks of purple and green. To say Iceland is a visual feast is an injustice … it equates more to an endless banquet of visual treasures. The elves’ handiwork?

Turning to the sense of hearing, audible are sounds of ice cracking, water rushing, the wind’s whooshing, and the Arctic Ocean’s distant roar. The sense of touch varies between the intense heat of a hot spring, a breeze’s cool breath, a waterfall’s wet spray, and the gnarled surface of hardened lava—magma turned to “stone” in mid-flow like Medusa gazing at her reflection in Perseus’ shield.

Taste is an explosion of flavors ranging from the delicate Icelandic cod to the tang of fermented shark cartilage. The libations vary from

tomato beer to whiskey heated over sheep dung and are all worth exploring in great abundance. Lastly, the sense of smell is intensified particularly with the cuisine and spirits (you’ll never forget the sharp scent of Iceland’s signature spirit, Brennivin, downed after that fermented shark morsel melts in your mouth). The air is a clean, crisp, wonderful scent—a result of being situated in the middle of the Arctic Ocean.

Although rather small, Iceland is a country that beckons visitors back again and again. This was my second trip in two years, and it will not be my last. On this adventure, we toured the country’s southern coast in late September just on the heels of an Icelandic summer.

The flight was remarkably easy. I highly recommend the direct flight on Icelandair from O’Hare to Reykjavik—clean, comfortable, ontime, and taking hours less than a drive to Nashville.

Upon arrival, we hopped in our Superjeep (a thrill in its own right) and drove an hour and a half to Hotel Rangá. Centrally located on the southern coast, Hotel Rangá is highly sought after by the avid traveler and celebrity guest. Chosen by both the Kardashian clan and the Real Housewives of Orange County, the hotel has proven to please even the most demanding visitant.

Commanding the helm of the family-owned hotel for the past two decades is the consummate host and entertainer, Friðrik Pálsson.

The log cabin-style hotel offers 52 rooms including seven continentthemed suites (Antarctica’s décor is an Instagrammer’s dream), gourmet Nordic fare (think Reindeer Carpaccio), geothermal heated hot tubs, and a state-of-the-art observatory for stargazing. My room had a charming view of the East Rangá River (one of Iceland’s finest salmon rivers), Mt. Hekla volcano, and on certain lucky evenings, the

JOUR NEYS Northern Lights. The hotel’s secluded countryside location and lack of light pollution provide optimal conditions to view these bucketlist lights. If you don’t want to miss any late-night appearances, the hotel offers Aurora Borealis wake-up calls to ensure everyone gets a glimpse of this treasured wonder no matter what time of day or night.

For those visiting Iceland, adventure calls and South Coast Adventure answers. Hotel Rangá worked closely with the company to secure an abundance of activities for us. We adored our guide, Siggi, a trained geologist; by week’s end, he had taught us so much and practically felt like family.

Our Icelandic escapade began in the Caves of Hella—a historical mystery, these manmade caves are thought to have been first inhabited by Irish monks in the early to mid-9th-century. However, the country’s Sagas are oddly silent on the subject … adding to the intrigue of these underground chambers. Of the recently discovered 12 caves, four are open to the public. We enjoyed a spirits tasting in our final cave sampling an assortment of Vor gins and Floki Whiskeys from Elmverk distillery. One libation bore the name “Hell,” and lived up to its moniker, packing quite a punch.

With bellies spirit-warmed, we headed to Skeiðvellir, a beautiful Icelandic horse farm near our hotel. A must on any visit to the island is a ride on this beloved horse—the world’s purest breed. These darling somewhat squat animals are experts at the “tolt,” which is smoother than a canter. Tolting horseback across the countryside with an Icelandic wind rustling your scarf is not to be missed.

Our second day was jam-packed with waterfalls, my favorite being Seljalandsfoss—a stunning example of nature at its finest. Don a raincoat for the trek behind the falls—truly breathtaking from every angle. Nauthúsagil is a secret waterfall and discovering it is an adventure requiring a bit of a hike deep into a scenic canyon while gingerly stepping over stones that barely peek out of the water’s surface. Shortly before reaching the falls, there is a fairly arduous climb (accomplished while clinging to a chain) but it is well worth the effort!

Ladder to Landmannalaugar the Kötlujökull glacier. Our goal? hot spring To locate an ice cave. These caves intermittently change location as they are constantly melting.

With crampon-clad boots, we traversed the glacier crossing the cave’s threshold. Upon entrance, I simultaneously felt excitement and fear. I could hear and see the cave melting but the experience was literally “cool” and a once-ina-lifetime opportunity. Emerging from the cavern’s icy interior, the landscape rolled out before me in a black blanket that gave way to mountains wrapped in chartreuse capes—an astounding juxtaposition of black and green.

Jumping back into our Superjeep and careening along the black ribbon road that hugs the shoreline, we headed to the Reynisfjara black sand beach. Before exploring, we stopped for lunch and the best burger of my life at the stylish Black Beach restaurant (svartafjaran.com).

Fully sated, we walked the beach and marveled at a wall of naturemade columns. Apparently, basalt lava fractures when cooled and creates this stunning formation, both a joy to climb and a pleasure to look at. Siggi explained that Iceland has black beaches because it is a relatively young island in geological terms.

final escapade of the day. “Thrilling” and “wild” are terms that come to mind—we caught air, dove through streams, chased rainbows, hugged ditches, and flew across the Icelandic countryside in an hour I will never forget. South Coast Adventure provided special suits, boots, gloves, and helmets because you get so dirty! Ah, but it was worth the sludge. Emerging from my dirt-encrusted buggy, I felt young, hip, and fearless.

We ate like kings that evening devouring Rangá restaurant’s famous mushroom soup, hearty Icelandic bread slathered with Icelandic butter, and a main course of salmon with sweet potato puree, apples, mustard seeds, and fried broccoli bathed in a white wine sauce—every forkful earned the descriptive term, “divine.” The culmination of the repast? A magnificent chocolate globe melted with a hot caramel sauce to reveal a decadently sweet interior.

My absolute favorite day of this glorious journey was venturing into the Highlands. Our Superjeep proved a necessity as we learned that Search & Rescue is often called to assist tourists who attempt the expedition in vehicles ill-equipped for the terrain. We bumped over rocks, plowed through rivers, scaled mountains, and crossed narrow straits with the sides of the road plummeting steeply just beyond my door.

The Highland’s vast snow-covered, jaw-dropping expanse is the definition of majestic beauty. Stunning lakes appear deep inside the center of mountains, and the rocky ranges go on for as far as the eye can see. We did not encounter a single person for six hours (except for the attendant at the hot spring).

Just before lunch, we made it to the Landmannalaugar located in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve. Donning swimsuits topped by cozy hotel robes we followed the narrow walkway to the watery opening in the snow. Descending the ladder we lowered ourselves into the hot spring heated by geothermal energy Reynisfjara black (heat from the earth’s sand beach interior) and made our way to the spring’s center. Sipping Opal Icelandic liqueur while sitting in a circle with steam dancing on the water’s surface, we engaged in deep

philosophical discussions and enjoyed the ebb and flow of the toasty current. On our way out of the Highlands, we visited Sigoldugljufur—an immense canyon with the most beautiful waterfalls. The vision of the water’s incandescent glow as it poured over the rock proved each site in Iceland is impossibly more fascinating than the one before.

On our last evening, we learned the Geldingadalur volcano was in the midst of an eruption. The next morning, we decided to forego our day in Reykjavik and headed to the active site instead. Scaling the side of a mountain directly opposite Geldingadalur we hoped to witness a lava flow. The steam from the unseen lava moving in the volcano’s belly was all we saw, however, the proximity to the crater and the view from the mountain made up for the lack of lava. We headed down to the base and explored an old lava flow. The surface is cool to the touch but there are many crevices where white steam escapes—evidence of magma churning deep within.

I could go on for ages about my love of Iceland but honestly one must experience the country for themselves to truly grasp its magic and majesty. Book your ticket, the elves are waiting, and your five senses will thank you.

Hinsdale Wine Walk The Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Village of Hinsdale hosted guests for the second annual Hinsdale wine walk in October. After a year break due to COVID-19, more than 500 tickets sold out in just under a week.

With the holidays come and gone, Stogsdill often sees an uptick of individuals seeking further information about potential divorce options around this time. After putting on a happy face throughout the holiday season, holding back tears, and dealing with inlaws, Stogsdill wants everyone to know: you’re not alone.

You got through the holidays, now what? Stogsdill first recommends giving yourself some time for you and your family to get back to your usual schedule. She also suggests seeking out a therapist or a marriage counselor. Therapy can help you understand and pinpoint why you feel what you’re feeling, and it often helps people validate those feelings and concerns. Once you identify the why, you can learn different tools to use to help you face the challenges you may be experiencing. If the challenge is your marriage, these tools can be used to help heal and fix the issues present.

“Nobody should make a rash decision when it comes to their marriage and their children,” says Stogsdill. “I would never want someone to have regrets or feel like they didn’t do everything they could to make it work.”

Stogsdill also emphasizes the importance of informationseeking and gathering and that is why she saw a need to start the podcast. “People want information but may not be ready to visit a lawyer. It’s important for them to have the right information and to see two points of view from a different lens, a lawyer and a divorcee,” says Stogsdill.

Stogsdill’s new podcast, How Not to Suck at Divorce, is an excellent way to obtain important information quietly. How Not to Suck at Divorce is already in the top three most popular in divorce podcasts. Stogsdill offers legal-minded advice, like responding as if a judge were reading your messages and how your attorney can help you define and temper the harassment that may be happening.

Rappaport then speaks on how she could have benefited from using BIFF and taking a step back before sending a reply, and her experience using court-accessible apps that monitor potentially harassing comments and information being sent between the two parties.

The podcast is a great way for individuals who are not yet outwardly seeking information to obtain information on the divorce process without having to disrupt your everyday life and routine. Stogsdill and Rappaport give proven and practical advice, while somehow making even difficult topics, like how to handle when communication starts to spiral, seem lighter and conquerable.

If you do decide to pursue divorce, Stogsdill notes how important it is to communicate your goals to your attorney. She recommends writing out a list of everything that is most important to you and your priorities so that while working on your case, your attorneys can make sure their actions are in-line with your priorities and concerns.

ore than a century ago, architect Daniel Burnham was famously quoted saying that Chicago should “make no little plans.” However, the second part of that oft-cited speech might be said again today after walking through the newly completed renovation and restoration of a Gothic Revival landmark built almost a century ago as headquarters for the Chicago Tribune.

“Make big plans,” Burnham said when revealing his 1909 Plan of Chicago. “Aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing.”

Like many of the grand buildings from the gilded age of the daily newspaper, the next iteration of this icon was yet to be realized when Chicago Tribune offices moved to a smaller location in the city. Designed as part of a 1922 architecture competition to

rival the most famous buildings in the world, a Chicago icon that could have been forever lost has been reborn as the Tribune Tower Residences.
