Remote Learning?

EDITOR’S NOTE

G

reetings! Welcome to our February issue of Hinsdale Living. This month many of our stories focus on wellness and the professionals who help us stay healthy. I think we can all agree that 2020 was a year of “new normals” and forging a path through the worst health care crisis of or lifetime. Luckily, we live in a community that has some of the finest physicians, many of whom have been on the front lines fighting the battle against COVID-19 and the subsequent health issues it brings with it. This month we celebrate those health and wellness providers who keep our family and friends happy and healthy. In our Premier Doctors feature, we spotlight 35 of the area’s outstanding providers from a variety of medical fields, from cardiology and internal medicine to orthodontics and plastic surgery. In our feature, Positive Outcomes, Dr. Chris Colbert provides a look at the future of emergency medicine in the wake of COVID-19. In Resolutions, local pediatric dentist, Dr. Mira Albert, reflects on the many changes 2020 brought for her entire family. Not only did Dr. Albert’s Hinsdale practice overcome the many adjustments necessary to continue serving her patients during the pandemic, but she herself embarked on a new endeavor, pursuing an MBA from Kellogg School of Management at

78

88 JOURNEYS

Northwestern University. While we have some of the best providers in our midst, self care is also a must for maintaining your health. Our Style and Beauty sections this month feature little luxuries and blush hued fashions that you are sure to love. In Recipe, we have Ginger Carrot Soup from health and wellness guru Dena Dodd Perry’s new book, Detoxelicious. In Journeys, Dustin O’Regan jets away to Conrad Punta de Mita on Mexico’s Pacific coast. The adventure promises to nourish your mind, body, and spirit. And, while you’re busy taking care of your physical and mental health this month, the wealth advisors at Northern Trust are there to help with your financial wellness. Being one of the nation’s largest wealth advisors doesn’t stop these financial experts from providing tailored solutions to each of their clients, and now even closer to home at their new Oakbrook Terrace location. Local community champions Alexis Braden and Lisa Kolavennu also grace the pages of our February issue. Braden is a California native with midwest roots, featured in our Country vs. Town section this month. She shares her love of local history and preservation, and more with us. Lisa Kolavennu is the executive director of Wellness House and for the past 13 years, she has led the local organization on it mission to support those affected by cancer. In Parting Words, she looks ahead as the nonprofit takes on 2021 and its new challenges and blessings. While creating our February issue, I couldn’t help but think of the many blessings my family and I have—including our health. This month, I will be focusing on not only those good fortunes, but what lies ahead in 2021. It has been an honor working with the many health and wellness professionals featured in this issue. Each of their stories are unique, and their contributions great. Please join me in thanking them for their continued commitment to providing the best in care for our communities. THE BUZZ GOLDEN RATIO, an eco-friendly coffee line recently launched by Clark Nowlin, features roasts that are sourced from ethically run, singleorigin bean producers in Nicaragua, Brazil, and Ethiopia, and come in tealike sachets, so that you can prep your coffee anywhere without any extra equipment. Golden Ratio roasts its coffee beans “low and slow,” producing a cup of highly caffeinated coffee, but with low acidity and bitterness. Best yet, because of the company’s unique roasting method, it drinks more like tea, leaving behind the stomachache that often accompanies a regular cup of coffee. drinkgoldenratio.com Transport yourself to paradise with the rich scents of VIM + VIGOR’s 100 percent natural soy wax candles. Featuring the most delightful and unexpected fragrance combinations, you can’t help but leave stress behind. These meticulously crafted fragrance blends like grapefruit and vanilla, beach linen and driftwood, and tobacco and amber, are designed to awaken your senses while delivering a sense of peace. Vim + Vigor candles are hand-poured into beautiful natural wood and pure copper vessels which are made to be repurposed as plant pots, mugs, vases or anything you can imagine. vimandvigorcandleco.com The Italian jewelry brand IPPOLITA has for the first time removed the traditional “behind-the-glass” boundary found in most luxury jewelers at their new Chicago boutique. Clients are invited to touch, try on, and experience the jewelry in an intimate way as though opening one’s own jewelry box. As an artist first and a designer second, Ippolita Rostagno believes that the craftsmanship behind her designs is as important as the beauty. There is no better way to discover this than to immerse oneself in the jewelry brand known for its organic shapes, effortless layering, and versatility. “I have created a new kind of luxury experience that encourages women to explore the beauty of the pieces within a radically new environment,” explains Rostagno, Creative Director and CEO. IPPOLITA is located at 900 N. Michigan in Chicago, ippolita.com.

If you know the television show Parks and Recreation, you certainly know lead character Leslie Knope’s favorite holiday—Galentine’s Day—a day to celebrate the women in your life, just before Valentine’s Day. Just in time for the holiday, lawyer-turned-life coach, SHARI LEID’s new book, The 50/50 Friendship Flow: Life Lessons From and For My Girlfriends will premiere. Leid’s book is filled with her experiences after meeting one-on-one with 50 of her girlfriends to reveal the positive impact they had made in her life. “During my journey, I discovered that the gift of one-onone time with each girlfriend—sharing with her the strength and wisdom that she has brought to my life—often brought her to tears of gratitude, learning, and a deeper human connection than I could have ever imagined,” she says. For Galentine’s Day 2021, Leid is encouraging women of all ages to take on the #5050FriendshipFlowChallenge to strengthen and deepen their friendships. The 50/50 Friendship Flow is available on amazon.com.

COUNTRY VS. TOWN ALEXIS BRADEN considers herself a California native with midwest roots. She was

born at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and grew up just outside of the Bay Area before attending Cal Poly to study journalism and history. Upon graduation, Braden moved to San Francisco where she met her husband, Rick, and worked for the PR firm, Ketchum, and even for romance novelist, Danielle Steel. “I’ve actually never read one of her books, but I admire her so,” admits the mother of three girls. Braden eventually made her way back to the midwest, finding a home near the Highlands train station in Hinsdale. “After our home in the Bay Area sold in a day, we bought our home here sight unseen. We chose Hinsdale for its charm, history, and architecture and came to love the community and people here,” she explains. Braden continues to pursue her passion for history, serving as a trustee for the Hinsdale Historical Society (HHS) and on Hinsdale’s Historic Preservation Commission. “My most recent accomplishment was writing a script for a HHS video that I helped produce, about the famed architect R. Harold Zook. I have become a big preservation advocate and recently co-founded the Hinsdaleans for Historic Preservation group on Facebook—along with several long-standing preservationists here in town. I really believe that not every historic home in Robbins Park can or should be saved, but that as a collective, Hinsdaleans, we should work hard to protect our village’s history,” Braden says. When Braden isn’t spending time with her family, playing paddle, or saving village landmarks, these are some of her favorites in the country and on the town:

LOCAL FINANCIAL EXPERTS One of the nation’s largest wealth advisors, Northern Trust, opens its Oakbrook Terrace location with a focus on bringing tailored solutions to Chicago’s Western Suburbs.

E

EDITED BY KEMMIE RYAN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEOD

stablished in 1889, Northern Trust has grown to become one of the largest wealth advisors in the nation. While the financial leader has evolved into a multi-faceted global financial services provider, it still holds true to its personalized service—especially at its new location in Oakbrook Terrace Tower. “We’ve been on a multi-year journey to consolidate our advisory team in the Western Suburbs in a new, all-encompassing location, which is what we just completed in the Oakbrook Tower,” says Roger McDougal, Managing Director of Northern Trust’s west suburban wealth management business. Northern Trust’s office in Oakbrook Terrace provides goalsbased planning and portfolios to manage the complexities and generational challenges of wealth, in addition to their flexible lending and cash-management services to meet business and personal needs. “Northern’s long-standing focus on wealth management has shaped and informed our holistic approach. In our office, portfolio managers, trust advisors, bankers, and wealth advisors are right next to each other working with clients as a team,” McDougal says. “Our bankers are deeply involved with direct lending to clients’ businesses as well.” “We provide proactive lending and cash management solutions to middle market business owners throughout the Chicago area and beyond. Our team is comprised of experienced bankers that provide thoughtful and tailored advice on the best way to finance working capital needs, equipment purchases, owner-occupied real estate expansions and purchases, add-on acquisitions and recapitalizations,” says Curt Bambule, Banking Team Lead. “All of our credit decisions are made locally, which allows us to act quickly so business owners can capitalize on timely opportunities. Business owners receive the personal attention that you might find at a community bank, but with resources and expertise found at the premier institutions in the country. Because we have experts from multi-disciplines on our team, we are uniquely positioned to provide business owners with valued advice throughout their journey, including succession planning and wealth transfer strategies.” Recently, the bank launched The Northern Trust Institute, which brought together 175 of the top advisors within the organization. Kristin Weaver, Trust Advisor Team Lead and member of The Institute, explains that it is a compilation of the firm’s best thinking across a wide variety of topics affecting clients. “It is incredible to see the amount of information and collaboration used to refine our advice and tailor it to unique client experiences,” Weaver says. “This collective expertise allows our advisors to anticipate our clients’ needs, deliver insight at critical times, and

Tim Baltz, Roger McDougal, Kristin Weaver, Curt Bambule

empower clients to make strategic decisions.” Expertise and wisdom around managing wealth is particularly important during times of uncertainty like we’re experiencing now, and Northern Trust’s advisors can help provide a steady hand. Northern Trust was recently named Best Private Bank in the U.S. by Financial Times Group and The Banker magazines and commended for its industry-leading approach to Goals Driven Wealth Management. “Our Goals Driven Wealth Management approach allows us to understand our clients’ specific financial goals and construct a portfolio that gives us the highest probability of achieving those short- and long-term goals,” says Tim Baltz, Investment Team Lead. “This gives our clients a high degree of confidence as we live with volatile financial markets.” The local experts in Northern Trust’s Western Suburban office include executives who live in the communities the office serves, including Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, Hinsdale, and LaGrange Park. They know the market. “Our experts can help you and your family create a customized plan unique to you and your goals. This plan is the basis for an ongoing conversation that allows the plan to be optimized and aligned along the way to make sure you reach your financial goals and achieve the desired outcome for what is important to you, regardless of market conditions,” McDougal says. “I’ve found clients are more confident when they have a thorough understanding of how to achieve their financial goals. When they do, they can be much more resilient in adverse times.” Northern Trust is located at One Tower Lane, 24th Floor, in Oakbrook Terrace, 630-932-6911, northerntrust.com.

ur health and wellness took center stage last year as the world coped with the worst health care crisis of our lifetime. Fortunately for our communities, we have some of the finest physicians, surgeons, and health care specialists right here in our midst. Please join us in celebrating some of the area’s most accomplished doctors and all that they bring to the villages we call home. This new annual feature showcases Hinsdale’s premier doctors across a variety of specialties—from oncology and mental health to optometry and plastic surgery. Many of the physicians featured here were on the front lines over the last year to keep us all safe, healthy, and happy. As we move into 2021 and look ahead to a brighter future, there has never been a better time to say thank you for all that they do.

If you would like to recommend an outstanding physician or be considered for our 2022 feature, you are welcome to contact us at features@hinsdalelivingmag.com. H I N S D A L E L I V I N G    47

DERMATOLOGY & DERMATOLOGIC SURGERY JEFFREY BERTI, MD; TOULA BERTI, MD SPECIALTY: Dermatology EDUCATION: Dr. Jeffrey Berti, BS, University of Illinois; University of Illinois College of Medicine; residency at Mayo Clinic; fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology at Mayo Clinic; dermatology residency with fellowship in Dermatologic Surgery at University of Wisconsin. Dr. Toula Berti, BS, University of Illinois; University of Illinois College of Medicine; Mayo Clinic residency. AWARDS/HONORS: Dr. Jeffrey Berti was Chief Resident, the highest honor for a residency program; graduated Alpha Omega Alpha from University of Illinois, the highest award for top 1 percent of graduating medical students. Dr. Jeffrey Berti and Dr. Toula Berti are the perfect pair, both in life and in business. Cosmetic dermatology and aesthetic surgery have always been Dr. J. Berti’s calling, so it’s no surprise that he is known as one of the best dermatologists in the Chicago area. While science and math were always his academic strengths, he was also drawn to art and architecture. Whether he is designing and suturing a skin reconstruction, sculpting the face with injectables, or reshaping one’s body with liposuction, he continuously incorporates skill and knowledge with artistic vision. Dr. T. Berti

has also combined her love of science and math with a keen insight towards the human body, mind, and skin relationship. She, too, has always appreciated the arts and fashion, using this framework to combine an extensive knowledge of lasers to promote gorgeous, healthy-looking skin. Over their combined careers, the doctors have pioneered and trained other doctors in dermatologic use of lasers, Botox, fillers and body contouring devices, such as CoolSculpting. One of the hallmarks of their practice is helping patients attain natural-looking, flawless skin through treatments designed to fit their lifestyles. And as skin cancer specialists, hundreds of patients have been successfully treated and seen the long-term improvement of the health of their skin. Together, they share a commitment to provide each patient with a professional medical visit that combines the same high level of expertise and decorum fostered at the prestigious Mayo Clinic—which seeks to promote “respect, integrity, compassion, healing, teamwork, innovation, and excellence.” Dermatology & Dermatologic Surgery is located at 6825 Kingery Highway in Willowbrook. Dr. Meaghan Boston Daly, a concierge internal medicine doctor with Harper Health Hinsdale, says being a great physician is more than just knowing the latest and greatest medical treatments. “It’s also about the doctor-patient relationship,” says Dr. Daly. “Taking the time to truly listen, care, and communicate in a thoughtful and compassionate way is what every medical professional should aspire to.” After more than a decade in the industry, she has seen the healthcare system grow increasingly more complex and impersonal. “Harper Health is a membershipbased practice that focuses on quality over quantity,” she explains. “Keeping my panel of patients small allows me to treat each patient like family.” Dr. Daly is a board-certified, internal medicine physician with a top educational background and commitment to excellence who gives each patient the time and attention they deserve. Harper Health Hinsdale is located at 12 Salt Creek Lane, Suite 310, in Hinsdale. For more information, call 855-947-7371, email info@harper-health.com, or visit harper-health.com.

BAND & WIRE ORTHODONTICS AND PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY TAMARA OWEIS, DDS, MS; RAMZI DAIBIS, DDS, MS SPECIALTY: Orthodontics EDUCATION: MS in Oral Science, specialty in Orthodontics, University of Illinois at Chicago AWARDS/HONORS: Top 1% Diamond Plus Invisalign Providers; Board-Certified by the American Board of Orthodontics Dr. Ramzi Daibis and Dr. Tamara Oweis’ Band & Wire Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry is a patient and parent-focused practice with a treatment philosophy based on state-of-the-art research and science. “We customize and time orthodontic treatment in a way that ensures best treatment results in the quickest and most convenient way possible,” says Dr. Oweis. The focus is on prevention and minimally invasive treatment. Orthodontic treatment for younger children, for example, is not recommended unless there is a clear indication for it. “Unnecessary treatment, in our opinion, can create rather than resolve problems. Additionally, our staffing and office setup allows us to offer appointments to new and existing patients quickly and conveniently,” adds Dr. Daibis. “Earlier this year, we expanded our practice by adding Dr. Kelsey Brar, a specialized pediatric dentist, to our team. In addition to being convenient for our patients, our collaboration ensures that dental and orthodontic concerns are addressed in a timely manner as soon as they arise. It also guarantees best treatment outcomes.” The orthodontists have also developed an award-winning expertise in treating children, teenagers, and adults with Invisalign clear aligners—an increasingly popular alternative to traditional braces. “Our 3D scanning and treatment planning technology as well as our experience in the system allows us to treat the most complex cases and deliver outstanding treatment results for patients of all age groups,” says Dr. Oweis. Band & Wire Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry is located at 433 E. Ogden Avenue in Clarendon Hills. For more information, call 630320-8888 or visit bandandwire.com.

Since 1959, Drs. Girgis and Associates (DGA) has been helping patients do just that. “Improving nasal breathing and nasal appearance can have positive effects on how you breath, sleep, and feel—all while minimizing facial discomfort, sinus symptoms, down time, and the need for medications,” says Dr. Samuel J. They take pride in the fact that they have served up to three to four generations, constantly striving to be the best they can be—personally and professionally. “We do everything we can to do what is best for you, our patient,” explains Dr. Girgis. “While we are an ENT one-stop shop, often offering same day services for ENT, audiology, allergy, hearing aids, in-house CT scan services, sleep services, and an inhouse sleep lab, each of our ENT providers have a particular ENT emphasis. THE GELDNER CENTER PETER D. GELDNER, MD SPECIALTY: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (emphasis in Aesthetic and Cosmetic Surgery) EDUCATION: BA, Johns Hopkins University; MD, University of Wisconsin; General Surgery, University of Chicago; Plastic Surgery, Wayne State University, Detroit; Plastic Surgery, University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas AWARDS/HONORS/DISTINCTIONS: Clinical Faculty, University of Illinois and University of Chicago; Castle Connolly, America’s Top Surgeons; Marquis “Who’s Who” Lifetime Achievement Award; RealSelf Top contributor, Verified Doctor; US News and World Report, Top Plastic Surgeons; media appearances include ABC, Fox News, NBC, WGN, Chicago Tribune, Life and Style Weekly, The Learning Channel, The Jenny Jones Show, Larry King Live Radio, WebMD Radio, New Beauty Instagram Live, and Allergan Instagram Live. Reputations are built over time, with effort, creativity—and ultimately—results. When Dr. Peter Geldner began his practice, most of his work dealt with complex reconstructive surgeries. “The questions were always how to formulate a unique solution for each patient based on their needs, desires, and limitations, available tissues, and a creative use of surgical options,” he says. “My cosmetic practice rapidly grew in an organic fashion. Patients sought me out since I didn’t apply a cookie cutter approach, instead treating each patient in a holistic fashion.” Dr. Geldner constantly evaluates his own outcomes to refine his patients’ options with surgical as well as nonsurgical treatments. New devices and techniques may represent substantial advancements in the art and science of plastic surgery; conversely, without close review, they may simply represent hype. “Only critical evaluation allows us to choose which new devices and techniques work and which do not. Consultations focus on a candid discussion of the patient’s desires, health, options, and individualized risks,” says Dr. Geldner. “We jointly create a plan for success. Intraoperative and postoperative care is vitally important. Experience and critical thought have taught me not to dismiss patient concerns. I realize that for each patient, the subjective outcome of our care far exceeds an objective evaluation of the results.” That’s why he continues to surround himself with nurses and estheticians who share his vision. “What we do for our patients has tremendous importance in their lives,” he adds. “We offer the options to look better, feel better, and live better.” The Geldner Center is located at 680 North Lake Shore Drive, Suite 1325, in Chicago, and at 12 Salt Creek Lane, Suite 315, in Hinsdale. Hansa Medical Groupe almost exclusively cares for patients in this senior category. “Caring for a senior patient requires time and effort, not only with the patient, but also with their family while working closely with facility staff.” Dr. Patel and his team also partner with other ancillary services that help their patients, including home health, pharmacies, medical equipment companies, and hospice. “This care coordination is vital for our patients’ outcomes and has been a great strength of our medical group,” he says, adding that caring for seniors during the recent pandemic has been especially stressful for families. “I feel that our group has brought the needed comfort and ease to them while providing great medical care. That’s why our group motto and goal for each senior is ‘to treat each patient like our own family’.” Hansa Medical Groupe is located at 5250 Old Orchard Road, Suite 300, in Skokie. ADAM R. WINCKLER DDS DR. ADAM R. WINCKLER SPECIALTY: Comprehensive Restorative Dentistry EDUCATION: BA, Augustana College (2002); BSD, University of Illinois at Chicago (2004); DDS, University of Illinois at Chicago (2006); General Practice Residency certificate, Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center (2007) AWARDS/HONORS/DISTINCTIONS: Board of Directors, AES-Leaders in TMD, Occlusion, and Comprehensive Care; Active Member, American Academy of Restorative Dentistry Dr. Adam R. Winckler has spent his entire career in dentistry—which includes seven years in the far Western Suburbs before opening a practice in Hinsdale six years ago—driving toward answering the question of “why?” It’s not just what happened or how it happened. Dr. Winckler believes it’s important to understand “why” in order to truly be comprehensive in his approach. He has continued to stay abreast of the latest advances in restorative dentistry, stemming from patient questions like, “Why did that cavity end up there? Why did that tooth break? Why do my teeth look like this? Why does my jaw hurt?” he says. “The

pursuit of these answers led me to spend hundreds of hours in postgraduate education and study groups.” This advanced analysis and education allows him to identify, diagnose, and treat some of the most complex restorative dentistry cases. Dr. Winckler, who has received advanced post-graduate training through a hospital based residency, the prestigious Pankey Institute and through the Spear Center, is dedicated to two things—building lasting relationships and continuing education to provide the best health care possible through a comprehensive, complete approach. “This management of complexity as well as developing trusting relationships with patients has allowed me to establish the reputation that I have today,” explains Dr. Winckler, who in addition to being a restorative dentist, has a special interest in Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ or TMD) and Sleep Disorders (Sleep Apnea). “More than half of our new patients are referrals from physicians, dentists, and dental specialists.” Adam R. Castle-Connolly Medical America’s Top Doctors (2012-2020); WomenHeart Wenger Award for Excellence in Innovation (2019); Woman’s Day Red Dress Awards (2020); American College of Cardiology Illinois Chapter Governor (2021-2023) (Dr. Annabelle Santos Volgman) Dr. Melissa Tracy takes many things to heart, but most of all, the sacred Hippocratic Oath “to treat the ill to the best of one’s ability.” As a cardiologist at the Rush Heart Center for Women, which recently opened its newest location in Oak Brook, her mission to care for your heart as if it were her own. “During this pandemic, I’m here to treat,” says Dr. Tracy, who has served many roles on staff at Rush University Medical Center and is pleased to bring her practice to

the new, state-of-the-art facility. The first heart program in Chicago devoted exclusively to women, the Rush Heart Center for Women was co-founded by Dr. Annabelle Santos Volgman in 2003. “For decades before 2000, heart disease treatments and research were mostly concentrated on men’s heart disease,” explains Dr. Volgman, who currently serves as medical director. “Heart disease in women was poorly understood. This changed when it was found that since 1984, more women than men were dying from cardiovascular disease.” While awareness about heart health for women has improved since the American Heart Association started the red dress campaign two decades ago, there is still much more to understand. Dr. Tracy, a specialist in non-invasive cardiology focusing on imaging, prevention, and women’s heart health, says that helping patients get a second chance with life gives her great fulfillment. “When patients meet me, they soon realize that I want to know them as a patient and as a person,” says Dr. Tracy, proud mother of Isabella 17, Tristan 13, and Quinn, 11. “Our visits are collaborative and transparent. We establish plans that the patient and their family are confident with.” Dr. Volgman shares Dr. Tracy’s excitement that these innovative, life-saving programs and services are now available in the Western Suburbs. The Rush Heart Center for Women is located at 2011 York Road in Oak Brook. For more information, call 630-724-1300 or visit rush.edu.

POSITIVE OUTCOMES

Hinsdale doctor sees creative shifts in emergency care. WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY MONICA KASS ROGERS

I

t’s a busy morning at the Colbert family’s Hinsdale household. Ten-year-old Nina scampers down the stairs with Gavin, 7, close behind, eager to show off the new toy top he sets spinning across the kitchen counter. Dylan, 15, comes next, heading to the back door where the family’s 10-month-old English bulldog Biggie is barking his request to join in. Their parents, doctors Chris and Carmelita, have a quick chat about logistics before Carmelita, a rheumatologist with DuPage Medical Group, has to leave for her appointments. With Carmelita on her way, Chris, Assistant Program Director of the emergency medicine residency program at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), settles in to chat before enjoying a day off with the kids. Having come through the incredibly emotional and physically draining demands presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, you would expect Colbert to be completely depleted. But this is a man who always looks toward the positive outcome— new potential, new growth, new possibilities, for both his family, his patients and the medical school residents he leads. “Despite all of the frustration and challenge, this pandemic has been a great opportunity for us to be creative and to shift the paradigm,” says Colbert, “both as teaching physicians, to support learning and keep the audience engaged, but also to provide insights for emergency medicine in the future.” As an attending physician in the Chicago area for the past

“The biggest thing that we have learned through the whole experience of this pandemic is just how resilient we are.”

13 years, directing emergency medicine at UIC, chairing continuing medical education for the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians, and co-chairing the Illinois College of Emergency Physicians spring symposiums, all of this is crucial to Colbert. “The biggest thing that we have learned through the whole experience of this pandemic is just how resilient we are. There was a point in 2020 when we didn’t know anything. We didn’t know if we were going to bring this home to our families, how this would affect us personally, or the ER in general. All we knew was we needed more ER doctors, and nurses. We were packing ICU beds, trying to create more rooms, and filling waiting rooms for hours. But just eight months later, we are talking about vaccines, and discussing the use of steroids and antiviral medications and anti-clonal antibodies for management. Everything we are doing in ER is different—how we triage, how we navigate patient throughput, and so much more. The entire platform has changed, and we did it under duress. We all got together and worked to enhance patience confidence in what we do, as well as achieving better patient outcomes.” While Colbert doesn’t think ER doctors are better equipped than other physicians to cope with the current challenges, the realities of ER medicine have trained practitioners to deal with whatever comes their way. “The thing about ER medicine is that it is always full of navigating and adapting to a wide variety of circles and possibilities,” says Colbert. “You need a good sense of humor, an open mind, and a lot of patience.” Colbert’s interest in medicine started when he was a young child, fascinated with biology and science. “I knew I wanted to be a doctor in grade school—even signed the yearbooks, “Christopher Colbert, future doctor,” he laughs. With a father enlisted in the Air Force and grandfather in the Army, a well-disciplined, structured life was generational, and influenced Chris to serve in the military as well. Currently a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Re-

serves, Chris has served as an emergency medicine doctor in Iraq, Guantanamo Bay, Kosovo, and Japan. Colbert’s father was deployed eight times during Chris’s childhood—moves that would take the family from Washington D.C., to Texas, Germany, the Philippines, and Illinois. “Moving a lot, you learn how to navigate social circles well because you have to,” he says. “You are the new kid all of the time. So, I quickly learned the value of listening and open discussion. As corny as it sounds, if you want to relate to someone, bring up something positive that people share. After you establish that, you can say, ‘Oh by the way, my name is Chris,’ and you’re on your way,” he says. Growing up on military bases, there were always timelines, but there was also a mix of family fun and healthy activity. “My family made time for all of it,” says Colbert. “When I was young, my brother, father, and grandparents would run every morning and do pushups. Weekends my father would make pancake breakfasts which we decided were the best match for cartoons. And there was music! My dad played the guitar and mom liked to sing, so we listened to a rich variety of music in the house from the time I was young on up. Everything from the Fifth Dimension to the Beatles, James Brown, and John Coltrane.” Because his parents wanted Colbert and his younger twin sisters to fill their idle time with something positive, Chris began volunteering in the hospital with the Red Cross when he was 13. He started out pushing veterans in their wheelchairs, and as time progressed, took on greater responsibility. By the time he was a junior in high school, Colbert was sitting in with medical residents for radiology, assisting the chief radiologist. “He and I developed a really cool relationship and he mentored me,” Colbert recalls. “He taught me how to read X-rays, and so much more, even writing the recommendation for my admission to medical school.” But the gift the radiologist gave Colbert upon entry,

“I would like to see the day when the resources that are available to my children are available to all children.”

would stay with him for life. “My first week of medical school, I received a package from him. In it, was a stethoscope with the message: “This is to remind you always to listen. What you need to be a good physician is not the instrument, but the skill of good listening. Listen to your patients, ask the right questions, and remember: There is no such thing as a poor historian.” Although Colbert initially planned to become a radiologist, his love for patient interaction made him realize he needed to pursue a different path. That turned out to be emergency medicine. “I fell in love with this unstructured, no-idea-whatcomes-around-the-next-corner experience. There is no monotony, and far fewer ‘thank-yous,’ but I love it. The variety of lives you interact with and grow from are exponential. I learn so much from these individuals and am a more open-minded husband, father, and physician because of the people I see and treat.” Chris and Carmelita often joke about the difference between their work. “People set appointments to see my wife three or four months in advance. But with my patients, being in the emergency room is the very last thing on their list of anything they would want to do. No one wants to be there. When people see my wife, it’s like, ‘Oh, I’m so happy to see you, Dr. Colbert!’ But with me, it’s ‘This is the last place I wanted to be!’ And I have to say, ‘You’re right, but I’m here to help.’ It’s very humbling.” Teaching the young doctors in residency that he works with to accept this, Colbert often turns back to the message from his early mentor. “The best physician is the one who listens before speaking. To find that place your patient is coming from first, and only then let them know that you are going to provide insight and help. That’s what I communicate to the residents. It sounds cliché but it’s true—no one cares what you know if they know you don’t care. Caring is what ensures longevity in this profession, so that you can go home and sleep well at night knowing your job has been done well.” Looking ahead, Colbert is excited about the work he is doing in the arena of social emergency medicine, writing a book that focuses on this with several colleagues. As part of that work, he is doing what he can to help shift health care disparities in this country. “I would like to see the day when the resources that are available to my children are available to all children,” he sums. “I’m all about finding the processes we can put into place that enhance mental wellness with teaching, with students, and with patients so this whole health process can honestly move forward. It’s my hope—and I’m currently in the process of redefining what we do as a culture of physicians by introducing new ideas toward this—that as a medical institution we can work for a larger, greater good. Because ultimately, everything leads to the emergency room. It’s not a question of ‘if ’ just ‘when.’ There is not one adult in America that hasn’t been to the emergency room in the last five years, either as a patient, or, with a family member. So why don’t we make this a place where everyone can have a good outcome?”

This community is a part of me; I’ve raised my family here, spent countless hours on Little League baseball fields and in local dance studios. My success in this business comes from my ability to form meaningful and dedicated relationships, not only with my clients, but with the very neighborhood that I am proud to call home. I’m your neighbor. I’m your REALTOR®. And I am here for you, every step of the way.

2021 VISION Beloved Hinsdale pediatric dentist Dr. Mira Albert reflects on family, the future, and the lessons that 2020 taught us. Looking to the new year ahead, she is more ready than ever to focus on the things that matter most. WORDS BY SHERRY THOMAS PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEOD

F

or nearly a decade, Dr. Mira Albert and her Brush Pediatric Dentistry have been a fixture in Hinsdale family life. But like the rest of the world in 2020, the pediatric dentist known through the village for making kids smile had to abruptly shift gears and move forward in unprecedented times. “2020 was a year for the record books. It started out so promising and like everyone else our plans came crashing down in midair,” says Dr. Albert, sharing a rare glimpse of what her personal life was like the year our daily lives were put on pause. “Closing the offices for two and a half months was incredibly difficult. Just when it seemed we had a plan in place, my dad became severely ill and hospitalized with COVID-19 on March 28.” While her father eventually recovered, he spent six weeks literally fighting for his life, she says. It was a turning point for her family, one that made her rethink how she was spending her time. The answer was clear. While Dr. Albert has a highly credentialed background that includes both a BA in psychology and DDS from the University of Michigan, a two-year hospital residency in pediatric dentistry, and a MS in oral sciences from the University of Illinois in Chicago, business school has never been far from her mind. And given that her spare time on non-clinical days was while the kids were at school, she took a leap of faith. “While it seems like a crazy time to do something like this, the hard stop on our social life and kids’ activities actually gave me a positive place to put my extra energy so I decided to pursue my dream of earning an MBA from Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University,” she explains. “I’m getting most of my schoolwork done in parallel with my kids’ homework so as not to interfere with family time. Plus, I’m excited to share my older son’s 8th grade graduation year with him in 2022!” Her goal with the MBA is to broaden her approach as Brush Pediatric Dentistry continues to grow. “While my first love is patient care, I greatly enjoy running my practice and responding to the challenges in spite of how stressful they can be at times,” says Dr. Albert. “Ultimately, I think I will better be able to serve my patient base and team with the knowledge and experience I expect to absorb from the incredible Kellogg faculty and my amazing cohort.” How does she juggle an MBA, a busy family, and a busy practice all at the same time? It’s not necessarily easy but she says her team at Brush and devoted husband, Dr. Sherif Albert, make anything possible. “I am fortunate that I have an incredible team behind me at my office, my kids are a little more independent now, and my husband is great at balancing our life with me. He truly is my partner. We share the responsibilities and joys of raising our two boys and managing our three practices together. Without his support, encouragement, and help, it would be hard to be successful at the endeavors I pursue,” adds Dr. Albert. “There are days he’s handling

“2020 underscored the lesson that you can make all the plans in the world, but ultimately things are not in your control and life can come to a complete halt quite literally overnight.” homework and making dinner while I’m doing things for the practices and vice versa. He’s also my fairest critic, which I think everyone needs.” It also helps that the Albert children are used to living with two busy parents. Dr. Albert says every day is “bring your child to work day,” pandemic or not. “While I’m sure my boys would love for us to completely turn work off at times, they also understand our dedication and that their blessings indirectly come from that dedication,” she says. “My hope is that as my kids grow, they learn to be loyal to the things they commit to.” They are also learning valuable life skills by helping out with small jobs at their parents’ practices. “My younger son really loves engaging on the patient side of things. During quarantine, he recorded a reading of our favorite children’s book for our patients and we posted it to our social media,” Dr. Albert says, adding that her kids are also enjoying the fact that Mom has homework now. “The first week of school, Kellogg laid it on thick and I considered dropping out due to the level of difficulty. It was my older son that disallowed my contemplation. He insisted I stick to it and encouraged me in the sweetest way. It was a really interesting parenting moment to have the tables turned.” While 2020 was certainly not an easy year for anyone, Dr. Albert is grateful for the blessing of time—time to reflect, and time for family. As for 2021, she’s taking all those lessons and moving forward with less plans and more intention. “2020 underscored the lesson that you can make all the plans in the world, but ultimately things are not in your control and life can come to a complete halt quite literally overnight,” she says. “I hope to use 2021 to dial in my goals, focus on family, work, school, health, and reconnecting with my friends I miss so dearly!” Brush Pediatric Dentistry is located at 911 N. Elm Street, Suite 228, in Hinsdale. For more information, call 630-504-2223 or visit brushforkids.com.

A SANCTUARY, SYMBOLISM & SEA TURTLES Conrad Punta de Mita is a destination that will nourish the mind, body, and spirit, immersing guests in the natural splendor and soulfulness of Mexico.

WORDS BY DUSTIN O’REGAN / PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CONRAD PUNTA DE MITA

esigned as a portal into the landscape, history, and rich multicultural identity of the region, the recently opened Conrad Punta de Mita is designed to offer immersion in Mexico’s Pacific coast. The resort’s layout pays homage to the traditions of the indigenous Huichol people who have inhabited the mountains of central Mexico for more than 15,000 years. “From thoughtfully designed rooms to unique restaurant concepts driven by age-old recipes and enriching programming, we tapped deep into the region’s local heritage to provide an experience driven by exceptional service that meets the demand of today’s discerning traveler,” notes General Manager Marco Tabet. Almost every resort vantage point, including guest rooms, offers views of the dramatic coastline, majestic Sierra Madre mountains, and palm trees that dance in the breeze. The resort’s nature-centric design encourages wellness and reflects a core belief of the Huichol that transformation and personal development occur through connection to nature. This admiration of nature is mirrored in the resort’s open air common spaces including its luxurious pools, four dining venues, and indoor/outdoor spa.

A labyrinth of paths intertwines the shimmering swimming pools surrounded by woven wood cabanas and chaise lounges halfsubmerged in water offering the coolest way to sunbathe. The overall design of Conrad Punta de Mita nourishes the mind and soul, but it is the cuisine that nourishes the body. All four restaurant menus and spaces pay tribute to age-old techniques and flavors of the local region. Executive Chef Victor Palma takes great delight in his position researching ancient ingredients to incorporate into his aromatic and enchanting cuisine. The specialty restaurant Codex, lying at the resort’s edge, creates a sense of wonder and intimacy through a curated dining experience. Guests enter a forest of mangroves before reaching an entry with four fountains. Here they are handed a candle and asked to turn to each source of water for a gratitude ritual. Next, guests enter the dining room which rests on an elevated wood deck beneath an intricate bamboo ceiling. An open “window” to the ocean completes the hypnotic embrace … and the culinary journey has not even begun. Codex, inspired by the ancient Aztec book of herbs, Codice, features traditional Mexican fare prepared with locally sourced ingre-

dients. The seasonal Full Moon Experience offers a menu directed by the phases of the moon, on-property fermented mezcal tasting, and a discussion with local farmers on the health benefits of their crops and herbs used to prepare the meal. This is not just dinner, this is a true culinary escapade. The open air Mezquite, one of our favorite restaurants, and just up the beach from Codex allows guests to dine on delicacies while toes rest in the sand. For lunch one day, we enjoyed a true seato-table affair, the Zarandeado experience, led by Executive Chef Palma. Fishermen from a local village brought their fresh catch for the chef to prepare one of Nayarit’s classic specialties, Red Snapper a-la-Zarandeado. This 500-year-old method of grilling fish over hot coals incorporates an abundance of spices and a “flipping” of the fish. We assembled fish tacos with the succulent grilled meat, salsas, guacamole, and pickled onions—Buena comida! Don’t miss Mezquite’s fresh grilled octopus and assortment of delicious salads (we recommend the quinoa with feta, green apple, and peas in a savory sesame dressing or the roasted squash with gorgonzola and arugula in a light dressing with a hint of vanilla.) The traditional post-dinner charcoal popsicle is always a hit with guests and has the added benefit of aiding digestion. Start your mornings on Arbol’s patio and embrace nature while perched above the expansive grounds overlooking the pools and beach. Fortify your body with the avocado toast accented with delicious chunks of lobster or with the stuffed Chile Relleno, a popular choice. End evenings in the Agave Studio just off of Arbol’s entrance. Spirit aficionado and the resort’s Food and Beverage manager Ana Martinez will lead you on a journey of Mexico’s agave introducing you to the differences between Mexico’s well-known spirits with samplings of several different varieties including tequila, mezcal, and raicilla. You’ll even sample a sotol laced with a bit of viper venom. Last but not least and at the social heart of the resort, lies the open air Paleta. A woven wood ceiling embodies a design in honor of the Huichol allowing light to enter and dance in patterns across the floor. My go-to here was the poke bowl with melt-in-yourmouth tuna, avocado, and Chile serrano—in one word—divine. The celebration of tradition and nature does not end with the resort’s overall design or with the restaurants’ cuisine. The indoor/ outdoor 10,000-square-foot Conrad Spa enhances wellness and mindfulness through indigenous rituals and natural elements. Upon entry, guests will find the air permeated with a customized smell that is spellbindingly glorious. Guests are then led through a

vine encased tunnel to outdoor hummingbird nest-like cocoon treatment rooms handwoven from local wood. Therapists use a collection of rituals and therapies inspired by ancient traditions, local flora, medicinal herbs, essential oils, and extracts for an experience one is not likely to forget. For the adventurous, the spa also features a traditional clay Temazcal or “house of heat” providing a cleansing experience for body, mind, and spirit that has been a tradition within Mexican culture for over 1,000 years. The resident shaman awaits your arrival. If you can tear yourself away from the spa, pools, and beach, the resort also boasts a 24-hour state-of-the-art fitness facility overlooking the perfectly manicured grounds. While all of the amenities are outstanding, I would be remiss not to extoll the tremendous virtues of Conrad’s people. We found everyone from the general manager and executive chef to our stewards at the pool ( Julio and Alfonso), to be extremely friendly and conscious of our every need. It is often the people that can make a place that much more special. Speaking of special, on our last evening my daughter suggested we walk along the beach despite the rain. Sea turtles favor this two-mile stretch of beach for laying eggs and earlier in the day we noticed several signs marking nests. On our sunset stroll (and to our absolute delight) we came across a nest of hatchlings making their way out of the sand and across the beach. My daughter dashed off to alert hotel staff and then we all spent 45 minutes shooing away crabs and birds, watching these tiny turtles head to their watery new home. At first, the little creatures tumbled and tossed in the waves but as soon as they were upright they took off as if they had been swimming for years. We bid farewell to the turtles, thanking them for this extraordinary experience which was the penultimate moment for a trip full of truly magical moments. Visit Conrad when you can, your magical moments await. To book now and for more information, visit conradpuntademita.com. Conrad offers serenity in a safe environment, embracing precautionary measures such as masks, hand sanitizer, temperature checks, sanitizing sprays, and Hilton CleanStay standards.

DIVORCE REDEFINED Morgan L. Stogsdill’s passion for helping others and a concierge mindset is helping her redefine the concept and practice of divorce. WORDS BY CAITLIN MCCAULEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK ISHMAN

M

organ L. Stogsdill is the youngest equity partner at Beermann LLP and the second woman to ever bear this title and honor. Named by Crain’s Chicago Business as one of the Most Influential Women Lawyers in Chicago and quoted in the New York Times, Stogsdill is taking the world of modern divorce by storm. Her impressive client roster includes celebrities, public figures, and titans of business. She earned her reputation in complex divorce issues with her new and creative approach that centers on the idea that ending a marriage doesn’t have to be a terrible experience. This innovative approach to marriage dissolution is steadily gaining popularity in divorce law, especially among a younger generation of lawyers. Stogsdill recently founded New-Era Divorce, a group comprised of her colleagues who are all committed to making the practice of divorce civil by bringing collegiality and problem-solving to the table. New-Era Divorce members also agree that just because they may be opposing counsels, doesn’t mean that they can’t come together to serve a greater purpose. Without all the posturing of a stereotypical messy divorce, and a mutual respect for one another, opposing counsels can work together to make sure that their clients leave with the best possible solution for their family. Stogsdill’s top priority is her clients and their families—with a mindset that emphasizes that just because two people divorce does not mean they aren’t still a family. The goal in each of her cases is to go through the divorce process “with dignity and class and leaving with a family still intact. The goal is not to destroy a family, like so many cases in the past, but to redefine the family,” says Stogsdill. Her practice is a concierge service built on maintaining confidentiality, open and honest communication, and a tailored approach to each client’s needs. One of the biggest mistakes she sees made in divorce law is not taking the time to interview numerous attorneys to find the person you really click with and who can adapt to the situation as it continues to evolve. Stogsdill takes a step-by-step, one-dayat-a-time approach with her clients—taking the emotion out of a situation to lay out different options and potential outcomes on a case-by-case basis. She’s committed not only to communicating

with clients but also making sure they understand each step in the process and make the best decision for their family. “If the client’s not directing the case, it’s because they’re uninformed and that’s unacceptable,” says Stogsdill, stressing that it is always OK to ask why and to bring clarity to the situation. Another key component of Stogsdill’s new approach to highend divorce is her extra effort to keep proceedings confidential. While she isn’t afraid of litigation, she advocates for trying to keep the negotiations out of court when possible, so that a judge unfamiliar with you and your family isn’t the one making the family’s decisions. At the end of the day, Stogsdill will always put her client and their families first. And if the family and especially the children are OK in the end, she knows she’s had a success. Morgan L. Stogsdill is a partner at Beermann LLP located at 161 N. Clark Street, Suite 3000, in Chicago. For more information, visit beermannlaw.com/team/morgan-l-stogsdill/. ust before she started working at Wellness House more than a decade ago, Lisa Kolavennu’s father was diagnosed with cancer. As Executive Director of Wellness House in Hinsdale, she brings that experience to work with her every day. “I’ve worked for nonprofit organizations since graduate school, and I’ve been a Wellness House now for 13 years. My father was diagnosed with cancer just before that,” Kolavennu says. “So, the mission of what people were doing at Wellness House was so compelling to me, I really felt called in some way to be a part of that and to develop my work to that mission.” With a background in psychology, Kolavennu is the perfect leader for Wellness House. “Everything we do is to support people who are diagnosed with cancer or impacted by cancer as a family member or friend,” she says. “We know that traditional medical care is critical for people who are going through cancer and yet there’s so much more that is left unaddressed that has a significant impact on their overall wellbeing and even their health outcomes.” Kolavennu says that so many aspects of its patients’ lives are changed when they are diagnosed with cancer and that it’s important for Wellness House to offer its programs free of charge. “We’ve been doing this for 30 years and that’s always been essential. At the same time, we believe it’s important to offer our programs by licensed and credentialed professionals who really have experience in their field of expertise, so patients feel cared for,” she says. “It’s the best combination of science and heart brought together for people because we believe that leads to the best outcomes.” In recent years, the organization has launched a concerted effort to get its programs to people who can’t come to its main location in Hinsdale. Wellness House has embarked on several partnerships in the Chicago area so that communities—especially underserved communities—can access its programs as well. “Our main location continues to be the heart of the organization in the community, and so we can learn things and develop things then absolutely expand the footprint to the Chicago area to serve more people,” Kolavennu says. “What’s really fascinating these days is that it can go far beyond Chicago because we’ve learned so much about how to do programs online during the pandemic.” Because offering programs free of charge is central to its mission, Wellness House has established a number of ways the public can support its work, both financially and through volunteering. It operates a resale shop in downtown Hinsdale—The Courtyard—

staffed almost entirely by volunteers, and it also raises money through grants from family foundations. Most significantly, Wellness House holds two fundraising events each year, the Walk for Wellness House in the spring and the Wellness House Ball in the fall. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, both events were held virtually this year, but Kolavennu hopes 2021 events can be held, at least in part, in person. The events provide critical support for the organization’s mission. “To continually receive gratitude from people and see the difference it makes in their lives, that’s a number one motivator,” Kolavennu says. “I want to continue to do this kind of work and be of service in this way.” For more information on how to support Wellness House, visit wellnesshouse.org.
