I’ve enjoyed participating in this legendary Sunday afternoon tradition for a number of years. grew up in Oak Brook. She made many lifelong friends as a member of the first class of girls at Fenwick High School in Oak Park. She attended college in California, earned her degree in interior design, then joined other young professionals in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood while attending Le Cordon Bleu for culinary school. Danielle and her husband traveled extensively before having children and even lived in St John, USVI and Vail, Colorado. Now settled in Clarendon Hills with their two daughters, Isla & Cali, the family still loves to travel, whether it’s a road trip on the California coast, Italy, or sailing through the Virgin Islands and Bahamas with friends. Danielle has been a member of the Clarendon Hills Auxiliary of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago for five years. She has chaired the group’s annual benefit and currently serves as cochair of the social committee. She’s also active in the Prospect School PTO and serves as a Girl Scout troop leader. When not shuttling her girls from scouts or school to gymnastics and cheer, she sneaks in a few hours of work. Danielle owns a catering company called Maison Cuisine, which is based on the west side of Chicago. Maison Cuisine caters over 150 events a year, mostly weddings, with a focus on allergies and alternative diets, informed by her experience as a lifelong vegetarian, more recently as a vegan. EXMOOR READY FOR ANOTHER GOLDEN MOMENT Iconic, Donald Ross-designed golf course in Highland Park set to serve again as the host challenge for the Western Amateur Championship— more than a century after a quintet par excellence from the country club sparkled at the Summer Olympics. t the 1904 Summer Olympics in Normandy, Missouri, a St. Louis suburb, 10 Western Golf Association men teed up for Team USA at Glen Echo Country Club and wound up collecting gold. “Five of them,” Exmoor Country Club Historian and Deerfield resident Don Holton says, “were Exmoor members.” Exmoor member Chandler Egan captured the silver medal in the individual segment of the Games more than 118 years ago. Egan had won the Western Amateur Championship, earlier that year, at … Exmoor CC in Highland Park. “Our club goes way back,” Holton, an Exmoor member for 34 years, says. Exmoor’s rich history, along with 156 of the best amateur golfers in the world, will be front and center again this summer, as Exmoor hosts the Western Amateur Championship—organized by the Western Golf Association (WGA), and the thirdoldest amateur golf tournament in the world—August 1-6 for the fourth time overall and second time since 2012. Vying for medalist honors for the second year in a row is former Hinsdale Central High School star and current University of Iowa golfer/finance major Mac McClear, who missed the cut by one stroke at last year’s Western Amateur at Glen View Club in Golf. The Red Devil alum has never taken on Exmoor’s layout. “I’ll be as excited for this year’s test as I was for last year’s at Glen View, because it’ll be another opportunity to compete against big-time players … the world’s top amateurs,” says McClear (HCHS, Class of 2019), a steady ball striker who twice finished in fifth place at the Illinois High School Association

Class 3A boys golf state meet and helped the Red Devils capture three consecutive team state championships (2016-2018). “I’m looking forward to playing Exmoor.” Exmoor’s roots date back to 1896, and famed architect Donald Ross designed the course that currently covers the private, full-service club in 1915. Although Exmoor hosted the 1904 event, Ross’s layout first tested a Western Amateur field in 1952, with defending champion and 1947 Masters runner-up Frank Stranahan emerging as champion. Other former Western Amateur champions include Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ben Crenshaw, Justin Leonard, and Curtis Strange. Stanford junior Michael Thorbjornsen beat Gordon Sargent 4 & 3 in last year’s final. “Exmoor is a classic golf course, with a variety of holes and imaginative bunkering,” Holton says, adding golf course designer Ron Prichard completed a substantial course restoration in 2003. “Donald Ross constructed holes that reminded him of golf course holes in Scotland, where he grew up. It features excellent par-5s, some of the best par-3s in the Chicago District, and short par-4s that aren’t as easy as they look. “Of the 12 Donald Ross-designed golf courses in the Chicago area, we like to think of Exmoor’s as an authentic Donald Ross course.” But more than quality golf will be celebrated at the 120th Western Amateur. An annual goal, shared by the WGA and Exmoor (a charter member of the WGA in 1899), deserves rounds of applause. Since 1930, both have supported the Evans Scholars Foundation to award full tuition and housing for highachieving caddies with limited financial means. The scholarship program is named after Charles “Chick” Ev-

ans (1895-1979), who became an Exmoor member in 1909 and won the Western Amateur eight times from 1909-1923. Exmoor members and event sponsors exceeded the club’s goal to raise $500,000 to support this year’s Western Amateur and to fund two more endowed Evans Scholars in the name of Exmoor. And they reached the lofty goal in January—in record time. “A phenomenal achievement,” Holton notes. Exmoor member and WGA Director Tom Kearney started caddying at Beverly Country Club at the age of 11. At 16, after graduating from Brother Rice High School in Chicago, he earned an Evans Scholarship and enrolled at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (Class of 1968) as an accounting major. Kearney played golf for the Illini in his senior year. “I was still 16 years old in the first month of my freshman year in college,” says Kearney, an Exmoor member since 1978 and a former Exmoor golf chairman and treasurer. “I lived in chapter housing with 90 guys. The scholarship program is an amazing one, providing free housing and tuition all four years for each recipient. But Evans Scholars have to work for meals, and I ended up working as a waiter for a sorority event, where I met Susan (his future wife). “Outside of being a part of my immediate family,” the Lake Forest resident adds, “the best thing that has ever happened to me was being named an Evans Scholar.” More than 11,500 young men and women have graduated from colleges as Evans Scholars. Nearly 1,100, including 14 Exmoor caddies, were enrolled in 21 leading universities nationwide during the 2021-2022 academic year. “The Evans Scholars Program continues to elevate the lives of young people by giving them opportunities to pursue degrees in college … opportunities they wouldn’t have had without developing a sound work ethic and learning all kinds of life lessons through caddying,” Holton says. “Exmoor has always been an enthusiastic and consistent supporter of the Evans Scholars Foundation.” Exmoor gets to stage another prestigious golf tournament, and it will do so with attention to details and class. In other words: par for the course. About 400 members, Holton estimates, will volunteer as walking scorers, reception committee members, transportation aides or “Home Stay” hosts for players. The sixday tournament begins with stroke play (72 holes, August 1-3, to determine the Sweet 16) and ends with match play, including semifinals and the final on Saturday, August 6. “Saturday will be a fantastic day of golf,” Holton promises. “We’re excited to see the top amateur golfers in the world play a course we know so well. For spectators it’ll be a rare opportunity to walk alongside players, and behind them, and see outstanding golf up close. No ropes. No barriers whatsoever. “They’ll get to hear players and caddies talk between shots,” he adds. “They’ll get to see high-quality shots, while standing only 20 feet away.”

As an Iowa sophomore in 2021, McClear became only the fourth Hawkeye to take medalist honors at the Big Ten Tournament. He has reached a ranking of 101 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, and, in his junior season, he shot an eight-underpar round of 64 at the Puerto Rico Classic in February. McClear played his home course, the par-71 Hinsdale Golf Club in Clarendon Hills, last summer and must have made history—Exmoor’s salient quality—by carding a 58. He made 13 birdies. Thirteen. “My Dad (Chris), who was always by my side when I started playing golf, didn’t believe me when told him what I shot,” McClear recalls. It was a masterful feat. It was Olympian. cooking class at Hinsdale Middle School just might have set chef and Food Network star Grace Goudie on her current career path. “That class changed my life. The teacher really opened my eyes to what I wanted to do with my life.” The classically trained chef is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Napa, California and worked in restaurants in California - including the three Michelin-starred French Laundry, before opening Scratchboard Kitchen in Arlington Heights in April 2020. Two months later, she launched her online brand, gracegoudie. com, in June of that year. Her video-based content, which focuses on cooking that is composed, not complicated, caught the eye of the Chopped casting team. The production reached out in June 2021. “I wanted to be on Food Network. It was a goal of mine so I took the opportunity not knowing what to expect, but with the thought that my formal culinary training might really help set me apart from the home cooks who are cast in cooking competitions,” Goudie says. “There was a chance that I could completely bomb, but I was okay with that,” she says. As it turns out, this chef with her journalism background, is a total natural who won round after round of Chopped Casino Royal. She dazzled the judges with dishes including chirishi ceviche with green pepper tea and peach vodka sauce, and lamb schnitzel with spaetzle and fuzzy squash salad.

“I loved it and had an amazing time competing. It felt like taking the first opportunity in living out my dreams,” Goudie says. “I tried not to overthink any of it, choosing instead to just cook with heart and soul. I found out I’m good under pressure,” she adds. She believes her time in the kitchen with legendary chef Thomas Keller helps in all her endeavors, whether creating the high-end farm-to-table take on brunch that has Chicago foodies flocking to Scratchboard Kitchen, creating the instructional cooking videos on her website, or turning a basket full of ingredients into delectable dishes. “My fine dining background serves me well,” Goudie says. Other elements in her secret sauce to success are support from her family, including four siblings and parents Chuck Goudie of ABC-7 and mom Teri Goudie, who is also an award-winning journalist. Community support from chef Paul Vivrant has also been helpful. “He’s been a wonderful source of advice and there’s no better spot for good food and good hospitality than Vistro Prime,” Goudie says. Finally, her work ethic, established through shifts at Egg Harbor throughout high school and on college breaks, is unmatched. THE SCALPEL AND THE CLEAVER: TOOLS FOR HANDLING CONFLICT IN MEDIATION AND LITIGATION IN DIVORCE

ith summer upon us and the smell of the backyard grill serving as an ever-present marker of that all-too-brief outdoor time that we enjoy here in the Midwest, I was thinking about my recent trips to the butcher and fishmonger and how they have something to inform the way we look at mediation and litigation in divorce. In both food-based shops, artisans ply their trade so that we all can enjoy their end product. And in virtually every turf and surf establishments, there are saws, grinders, slicers, choppers, cleavers and an array of boning, skinning, filleting and other knives. Before our purchase comes to us ready for seasoning and cooking – it was first subject to varying degrees of precision and force at the hand of these maestros of meat and fish – with each maneuver applied using some or several of these different implements. Watching the skilled professionals craft and cut, it is impressive to see the diversity of tools and techniques used to work their magic. In every way, the specific tool and the particular technique is calibrated for both accuracy and precision – each are best suited to the unique task at hand. In family law, it is common to conceive of litigation as a blunt and brutal instrument applied with pressure and force – a cleaver, if you will. By contrast, mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution would be scalpels of sorts – akin to the precision shobu knife one might use for delicate slices of sashimi. These non-litigation implements unquestionably permit for more granular, creative and artisanal resolutions that can be crafted outside the crucible of the courtroom. To some limited extent, these binary comparisons are accurate. But they are also imprecise. Too often, the world of divorce litigation is depicted as a universe only of aggressive tactics and linear, direct battles. And too frequently, the world of mediation is characterized as if it should be, at all times, an arena of almost Southern gentility and rose-colored glasses of cooperation. The truth is that in both litigation and mediation, the adept attorney who has proven and ongoing experience in both worlds will always and already be drawing upon the skills, strategies and data points garnered from substantial time in both arenas. Like the food professionals above, in either setting, the skilled attorney will apply the correct tactic for the specific issue at the correct time. This is because, in the reality of both litigation and mediation – a practitioner must be able to draw upon the entirety of his or her toolkit and his or her emotional intelligence – depending upon the

issues at hand and the psychologies involved. In mediation, it is critical to have an accurate and precise understanding of what the real-world benchmarks would be in the Courtroom. Without firsthand facility with that specific data, gleaned from actual experience, the ability to assess the objective propriety of settlement positions and analyze issues of cost, benefit and risk is skewed. Moreover, even within mediation, there are tactics and skills commonly used within the litigation of a matter that have direct application. The ability to actively listen, to communicate complex concepts coherently, and to Brendan Hammer persuade is a hallmark of good trial lawyers. Those abilities honed with people on the witness stand are no less critical at the settlement table. Similarly, in litigation it is essential to be able to work patiently with finely tuned approaches, not merely consistent blunt force. Within each overall piece of divorce litigation, there exist subsidiary pieces of litigation on temporary matters such as financial support, attorneys’ fees, parenting time and other issues. And at different times during the pendency of a case, the emotions and mindset of the parties involved will inevitably be different than it was at a later point or will be at a latter point. As such, a one-size-fits-all litigation approach reliant solely upon shock and awe is a crude and unsophisticated strategy that can often exact an inadvertent iatrogenic effect upon a case and make matters worse both substantively and in terms of process. In truth, litigation is an art, requiring patience, sensitivity, timing, and empathy. Seen this way, it becomes clear that litigation is no less creative than mediation and also that mediation is no less fraught with conflict and proxy wars than litigation. The other critical point for spouses in divorce to appreciate is that a family law case often exists in both worlds: litigation and mediation. It is not uncommon to have any of the following a case that begins in litigation and moves to mediation (and vice versa), a case proceeds in litigation while a portion of or issue in the case is mediated, and even mediation after a case is litigated but prior or during appeal. In light of the many explicit or implicit intersections of the litigation and mediation worlds, it is that much more critical that clients be mindful of the value to be derived from working with counsel adept in using all of the tools available to navigate the issues, processes, and people involved in the case. Just in the Nick of Time Steak + Vine is a boozy steak and chops spot that is carefully crafted by a local restaurant veteran for sophisticated local diners.

don’t think I’ve ever encountered a more charmingly personalized cocktail menu than the one that greets diners at Steak + Vine in La Grange. Owner Nick Gangas, whose parents ran the local Greek diner, In Kahoots, for years, approved every recipe and wrote every caption on that sheet. This is Nick’s place, through and through. Case in point: When’s the last time you perused a list of drinks inspired by songs that were on staples from the owner’s own musical playlists? It’s the antithesis of those overwrought and gaudily overpriced bar menus you tend to find downtown. No groan-inducing cocktail puns here, nor snooze-worthy lists of booze brands and supporting flavors that read like a bulleted corporate memo. Quite the opposite. Gangas has penned a paragraph for each and every offering that, describing not only the song that inspired each drink but also the mood each drink is

DINNER DATE meant to evoke. If you’re of a certain age—i.e., anyone who actually knows what a tape deck is—can’t help but feel a wave of warm toe-tapping nostalgia wash over them. Do you miss, as Nick does, the bright lights and hedonic insouciance of the Big 1980s? Then, Nick recommends ordering When Doves Cry (tequila spiked with grapefruit and lime juice). Still harbor fond memories about the subterranean shaggy-haired thrill of attending a Ramones concert? Yeah, so does Nick. Try “I Want to be Sedated” (A Manhattan made with Old Forester 86.) “I’m in my 50s now,” says Gangas. “Which is the same age as a lot of my customers. A lot of restaurants still play Sinatra, but I was raised on rock and roll. I wanted to play music that I enjoyed listening to and serve food that everyone enjoys eating.” As the name implies, Steak + Vine specializes in steaks and chops: It offers a traditional line-up of favorites that include filets, prime rib-eyes (our personal favorite) and a slightly less T-bone. Whatever your preferred cut, Nick’s kitchen cooks them all the same way: lightly seasoned, sizzled to perfection in the kitchen’s stand-up broiler and finished them with a touch of butter. The results are equal to any highend chain steakhouse you can find: slightly caramelized but never burnt crust, extremely juicy and impeccably tender, due in part to Nick’s co-owner and childhood friend, Michael Wilson, an early corporate chef for Morton’s steakhouse who established the beef program when Steak + Vine opened in 2016. Gangas and Wilson first met when

they were just 14 years old, when both logged hours as busboys at In Kahoots. Some kids dream of turning double plays together as big league middle-infielders. Or forming their own garage bands. Not Wilson and Gangas. The goal, even as teens, was to opening up a sophisticated yet family friendly restaurant in LaGrange one day. After a stints working for Lettuce Entertain You and others, Gangas decided to make good on that pact. Together they built the menu, which includes a can’t-miss burger named The Cabin, an homage to a Berwyn restaurant they both loved as kids. It’s a wonderful tribute, smoky and ultra-rich. In addition to a sweet layer of caramelized onions and some mild white cheddar, the kitchen’s semi-sweet bacon jam takes the burger to another level. If you’ve come to enjoy a casual affair, order that burger along with a super-sized platter of homemade potato chips served with

Owner Nick Gangas doesn’t like to advertise the fact that, on occasion, he’ll sell his high-end collector wines at retail prices. “Having bottles of true collector wines is just fun for me,” says Nick, as is his entire wine and cocktail list.

In essence, this is a first-rate honey-spiked whiskey sour, almost mead-like in its flavor profile. But Nick hopes it reminds you of your first date: A new budding love, sweet, intimate and intense.

an onion dip that could double as balsamic crema. It’s Super Bowl worthy app, buoyed by some wonderful crisps; crispy around the edges with a slight give in the center, which are then dusted with truffle salt. Longtime LaGrange natives will be happy to know that Nick uses the same recipe to make his French onion soup that his parents did at In Kahoots. If you’re looking to enjoy small plates, try the kitchen’s yellow tuna, coated in sesame seeds and seared tataki-like with a thin ponzu sauce, wonton chips and wasabi peas. Gangas is especially proud of how he’s managed to lean on so many local partners. The dining room’s chairs were made by a high-school classmate, who runs his own furniture manufacturing business. Nick often orders beef from Wittingham Meats in nearby Alsip and his ice cream comes from his favorite local spot, Tate’s. Not to mention that virtually all of the restaurant’s artwork was created by local artists. As our waiter told us at the end of our meal, “This place truly is a life-long dream for Nick.” And truth be told, a dream come true for us steak and craft-cocktail lovers, to boot. re you longing to escape from a fast-paced world? To find a slice of paradise and relax? Caerula Mar Club is the luxury boutique resort for you. Located on South Andros Island in the Bahamas, it is an easy trip from Chicago. We boarded a flight to Fort Lauderdale and a few hours later we popped over to Makers Air, a private charter airline company with the tagline— “connecting passengers to paradise.” The scenic flight to South Andros was just over an hour and proved the perfect vantage point to view many of the famous Bahamian “blue holes” —underwater cave systems famed for their azure centers and turquoise rims. After arriving at the quaint Congo Town-Queen international airport, it was a four-minute drive to the resort. Once past the Club’s gate, we meandered down a curving white gravel drive hugged on either side by dense, glossy hedges. Around a final curve, Caerula Mar emerged like a mirage. General managers and hospitality industry

veterans, Ron and Margaret Gratzinger, greeted us like old friends. The resort’s emphasis on sustainable and natural materials evokes a “barefoot breezy” feel with a luxurious vibe—we couldn’t wait to kick off our shoes. Our refreshing welcome mocktails—bearing hints of grapefruit and pear—in hand, we headed to our beachfront villa. Soaring ceilings, pristine contemporary décor, soft white oak floors, and sumptuous linens welcomed us into the open-plan living area. Beyond the main bedroom was an immense marble bathroom with a shower sporting three showerheads and a bench—an indulgent way to wash away the sea’s salt and sand. The expansive villa featured two bedrooms, a sitting area, and a large veranda. In the evenings, we often spent time on the latter listening to the ocean’s orchestra while engaged in games of Rummikub borrowed from the resort’s game room. Caerula Mar Club features three dining concepts. Switcha, the

whimsical café and smoothie bar located just off the lobby, became our go-to for coffee and breakfast (the Acai bowls are a must). We selected poolside/oceanfront open-air Driffs as our daily lunch spot. Here we savored delicious salads topped with fresh catches of the day cooked Bahamian-style or, my husband’s favorite, a spicy fried chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries. According to both my husband and daughter, the fries are reason enough to return to this idyllic setting. Evenings were spent savoring Lusca’s curated daily menu featuring a fish, meat, and vegetarian entrée option. A favorite dish was the ginger and citrus-marinated ahi tuna, crusted with sesame seeds, served over rice noodles, with carrots, zucchini, onions, garlic, green onions, and a hoisin sauce-sesame ponzu dressing—absolutely divine. Luckily, the dessert menu remained

constant as we would have sorely missed our nightly selection of the chocolate pecan tart served with caramel, Chantilly cream, raspberry puree, and fresh berries. We did mix it up a bit one evening and ordered the peanut butter mousse served with grilled pineapple salsa and goat cheese with lavender ice cream; a dish that gave us a true appreciation for the chef ’s gift for perfectly pairing ingredients. Each day began on the beautiful Bahamian white sand beach. The long stretch of sand suited my husband’s extended runs and my daughter and my morning walks. The shade of the towering palms encouraged me to finish several books that had occupied my nightstand for weeks. The poolside hammocks offered a breezy alternate location for reading or just daydreaming. I spent hours in my suspended paradise swayed by the ocean breeze. On days we felt adventurous, we used the complimentary water sports equipment to test our balance on the stand-up paddleboards Reception lounge

or take a spin in the kayaks. One afternoon, the three of us set off to explore the island on the resort bicycles and hiked four of the island’s blue holes. It was a lovely way to explore the island’s rocky terrain and become acquainted with the island’s friendly residents. When we passed a bus full of school children wearing bright blue uniforms and waving enthusiastically, it seemed they couldn’t have been happier to see us. We also ventured off the resort grounds for a day of snorkeling. Our guides picked us up for a quick ride in an open-air Jeep to the dock where we made a stop at a local conch establishment to meet our restaurant proprietor/captain. Once on the water, we headed to a lagoon. Hopping into the pristine waters, we swam through a sea of tiny jellyfish – lucky for us, not of the stinging variety. We encountered an assortment of conch, lobster, and fish – favorites were the Queen Triggerfish and the Lionfish – both appearing as if dressed for some type of aquatic ball. The Queen looked as if she had spent hours perfecting her elaborately patterned eye makeup, and the Lionfish’s frilly fins resembled a glamorous “gown.” We also met up with turtles, and I was surprised to learn that the Bahamian turtles are quite speedy – very different from their leisurely brethren familiar to us from other locales. Several rays and starfish

made an appearance in the shallower waters. In deeper areas, we visited the blue holes – these water-filled cave systems attract divers from all over the world. We did not get a chance to scuba dive, but diving is quite popular as the Andros Reef is one of the largest in the world and offers the purest Bahamian diving experience. According to island lore, these holes are home to the mythical sea monster known as Lusca. We were unable to test the veracity of this tale as Lusca chose not to greet us. Returning to the resort via boat, we had the privilege to be the very first guests to step onto the resort’s newly renovated dock. The dock is just one of many projects highlighted in HGTV’s Island Renovation. This hit show documents the owners of Caerula Mar and renovation professionals Bryan and Sarah Baeumler’s purchase and restoration of this once-abandoned property. Spoiler alert … the end result is pretty extraordinary, and you might even catch a glimpse of our family as the show was filming during our visit. So, put down the remote control and seize an opportunity to relax, refresh, and renew on one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful, untouched, and bio-diverse destinations. or more than 20 years, we have maintained that “Tests are standardized. Students are not,” so solutions vary by student. However, years of data reveal a striking trend when it comes to practice: Our best performers take 5+ practice tests. Importantly, 60 to 70 percent of their growth happens after the first practice test, indicating that taking multiple practice tests and learning from them is the key to driving the greatest growth. Any student athlete, mathlete, or musician knows that getting your reps in allows for enhanced learning and more reliable performance on “game day.” This is an accepted truth, in general, but why is it true? TESTS ENHANCE LEARNING Testing is often thought of as one summative moment that reflects the results of studying over time, but what can be overlooked is that testing is part of the learning process. Learning can be enhanced through testing:

“Test-enhanced learning is the idea that the process of remembering concepts or facts—retrieving them from memory—increases long-term retention of those concepts or facts. This idea, also known as the testing effect, suggests that tests prompt learning when compared to studying.” (Roediger and Butler 2011; Roediger and Pyc 2012). For tests like the ACT and SAT that are summative of 7th through 11th grade curriculum, there’s a lot of material to learn and recall quickly and accurately. Therefore, taking practice tests to boost recall becomes an important part of a learning process.

At Academic Approach, we recognize the positive impact of testenhanced learning, so we use a combination of quizzes, homework, and both untimed and timed full-length practice tests to incorporate test-enhanced learning into our tutoring programs. ACT AND SAT SCORE CHOICE In recent years, ACT and SAT developed Score Choice policies, which allow students to test multiple times and send only their best score to colleges. These policies protect the student, minimize

stress, and allow students to retest to improve. While Score Choice has evolved for multiple reasons, the change supports research that students learn and improve through retesting. In fact, ACT has published its own research on retesting, highlighting two important findings: • 57 percent of students increase their composite scores when retesting. • Of the 10 test preparation practices investigated in ACT’s research, only the hours spent with a tutor had a significant impact on retesting results and score growth. What’s important here is that practice testing alone does not necessarily drive growth; instead, growth requires testing and tutoring. It’s testing along with feedback from a tutor—analysis and instruction—that enhances learning and performance.

Students who receive feedback after a test event can make changes, adapt, test again, and grow. It’s like watching tape of your performance in sports—the thoughtful review and critique drive change. As I’ve always said to my students, there is no true learning without the analysis of your errors. achel Gregersen is, first and foremost, a designer. She combines her love of interiors, architecture, fabrics, and art with a degree in design and over 25 years of industry experience to meet with clients to help them determine what’s the best look for their homes. Gregersen’s career ranges from working directly with clients to being on the executive team leading the window treatment division of a national company, where she oversaw the merchandise-buying and training for over 1,000 sales representatives nationwide. But it’s the personal touch that gets her excited. Which is why, in 2014, she started Beyond Shades, a custom design company that works one-on-one with clients to provide just the right window and wall coverings for their homes. “I pride myself in approaching each project, whether it’s one window or an entire home or building, with a clean slate that makes it all about the client and their needs,” Gregersen says. “I’m thrilled to be close to the client and to be building the Chicago area’s leading team in window design.” Gregersen is the owner and manager of the Beyond Shades showroom in Oak Brook — one of the first fully updated and automated Hunter Douglas showrooms in the country — and an In-Home Consultation Only service based in Elmhurst, where she lives with her family.
