SIGNATURE SOIREES

I

’m thrilled to bring our November issue to you this month. As we move into the winter season, it feels like social plans are full steam ahead. On the pages that follow, we bring you holiday inspired décor, style, and entertaining trends that are sure to stand out from the crowd. On the cover we have custom gown designer Elena Victoria (EV). This fashionista not only designs some of the most elegant gowns around, but she’s also on a mission to inspire the next generation of designers. EV recently expanded her sewing classes aimed to teach children the art of sewing, while instilling confidence and camaraderie, to the Western Suburbs. With many classes already set, her business continues to grow and brings her beautiful designs to Hinsdale this winter. One of her gowns may just be the perfect fit for your holiday soiree. Speaking of soirees, local architect and interior design extraordinaire, Lauren Ashley Allan, shares her signature soiree musts for 2021. From signature place settings and barware to pre-prepped cocktails sure to please, and tree trimming essentials, Allan creates the most glamorous designs that guests won’t be able to take their eyes off. If you’re looking for delicious dining before the big Thanksgiving feast at the end of the month, we have It’s a

Southern Thing Kitchen & Bar in Dinner Date this month. Between the delectable fried green tomatoes and pure southern hospitality, Executive Chef Peter Susca, has put this North Carolina treasure on the map in Naperville. Dustin O’Regan and her family bring us back to Maldives in Journeys for a luxury adventure on the Niyama Private Islands. The Crescent—a lavish overwater villa paired with the ultra-chic resort’s culinary offerings, impeccable service, and unique adventures might be just the getaway you’re looking for before the hustle and bustle of the holidays begins. In Style and Beauty, editor Lauren DeMaria curates a musthave list of winter essentials to bundle up in and nail colors to that will brighten the cold winter ahead. And if perfect tailoring is needed for your new wardrobe, we feature local business, Tuxedo & Prom in a Publisher’s Profile this month. The Hinsdale gem provides more than just tuxedo and prom needs; owner Chongsook Park prides her business on custom tailoring and fittings that add style and panache to any wardrobe. With an issue packed with holiday inspiration, I can’t wait for you to dive in. I hope you’ll be spending the holidays with those you love. I’ll be jetting away to the warmth of Arizona with my daughter Kassie to visit family and share our Thanksgiving traditions with her. I hope you’ll share your Thanksgiving traditions with us on Instagram and you make plans—@hinsdale_ living. I can’t wait to see those tablescapes inspired by Lauren Ashley Allan! Talk of theTown LEADING AGENT

W

hether moving across town, across the country, or across the globe, LARYSA DOMINO can help. Named the No. 1 Individual Agent in Hinsdale in 2019 and 2020, Domino prides herself on being a relentless advocate for her clients. Using her background as a CPA and in Corporate Finance, Domino uses an analytical, datadriven approach while helping her clients buy or sell. As for her take on the current market, “The COVID-19 influence on the real estate market has driven the ‘more is more’ phenomenon. Buyers want larger basements with exercise rooms, media centers, more outdoor space, two offices, and more overall square footage. The spring market should be robust!” she explains. “I’m so thankful for the success of my business over the past year. Low inventory in the marketplace created a heightened need for immediate showing capability and a laser-focus on off-market inventory. In February, I added Candace Allen as a buyer’s specialist to help specifically with home buyers, and we just recently added Katy LaCrosse as a second buyer’s specialist. Overall, we have more than doubled my 2020 volume already this year,” she adds. While Domino is the leading broker in Hinsdale, she also focuses her time on volunteering and of course, her daughter. “She’s my No. 1! I’ve focused many of my community activities around my daughter’s schools,” she says. She has served as a past Co-President the Madison Elementary School PTO, as well as chair positions with Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club, and most recently with Infant Welfare Society. When asked how she balances it all, Domino shares, “It’s not easy, and sleep is often a casualty of the process. I think all working parents struggle with this balance. I’ve created seasonal annual traditions that give us something to look forward to during the busy months and allow time to ‘pause’ as a family.” As we move into the busy holiday season, perhaps Domino’s advice to take ‘pause’ with the ones we love is what we all need to hear. For more information on Larysa Domino, call 630-561-8331 or visit atproperties.com/site/larysadomino.

COLLABORATION IS KEY Jason Sposeep is the resident expert on Collaborative Law at Schiller DuCanto & Fleck. His strength both in collaboration and litigation make him an invaluable asset to his clients and his firm, but his empathy and commitment to helping families rebuild are what drives him. WORDS BY CAITLIN MCCAULEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR

J

ason Sposeep has been with Schiller DuCanto & Fleck for 20 years, where he first started as a law clerk and has since risen through the ranks and today is one of 11 equity partners in the firm. Sposeep’s expertise is in Collaborative Law. There is no one else in the Schiller DuCanto & Fleck offices more collaborationoriented than him, with collaborative cases making up more than one third of his overall practice. “More than 90 percent of divorce situations do not or should not need to be resolved by a judge,” says Sposeep. But this wasn’t always his philosophy. Around 2007, Sposeep saw one of his colleagues/mentors handle a case with extremely similar circumstances to one Sposeep was litigating at the time, only his colleague was using the process of Collaborative Law. He saw firsthand that you can have near identical statistics and circumstances but get drastically different results depending on the chosen divorce process and team. Since then, he’s been a convert. “To see families benefiting through Collaborative Law changed the trajectory of my whole practice,” says Sposeep. He’s since become very involved in the Collaborative Law community, sitting on the executive Board of the Collaborative Divorce Institute of Illinois, and arguing before members of the Illinois Supreme Court to help pass a new Supreme Court Rule needed to cement completion of the Uniform Collaborative Law Act—an absolute highlight of his career. Sposeep describes his practice as “an iron fist in a velvet glove.” While he is very pro-collaboration, he’s well-aware that it is not the right solution for every family. Sposeep isn’t afraid of litigation in the courtroom, where he is a formidable opponent. He is very selective of which cases can meet his high standards for collaboration. He insists that for collaboration to work, it must be a full and proper team in place and the right clients. Thanks to his selectiveness, Jason modestly acknowledges that he has successfully resolved more than 95 percent of cases in which he was engaged in the formal Collaborative Process. Sposeep also insists a divorce coach be part of every collaborative team—someone with a mental health background to assist

with translating emotions and helping address client communication and mental health issues as well as another set of “eyes and ears” to sign off on determining if Collaborative Law is the best process for the family. Sposeep highly recommends using a divorce coach regardless of the strategy you choose, as it’s a great way to work through the changes divorce brings while also processing emotions with someone unrelated to the case itself. Sposeep recognizes that there’s more than one way to solve a problem. But he believes that by working together, his clients can create more holistic solutions for themselves and their families both in the midst of divorce and for the future. “There can be a light at the end of this tunnel … and it can be ten times what it was before,” says Sposeep. His compassion and empathy for each of his clients truly puts Sposeep in a class of his own. Having gone through a divorce himself, Sposeep understands both from a legal, but also a much more personal standpoint the challenges and emotions his clients face during this process. And he’s living proof that it can be okay, that it can get better, and that there is a real opportunity for a full and wonderful life after divorce. ith much of last year’s holiday festivities toned down or canceled altogether because of the pandemic, 2021 is already shaping up to be a season to remember. However, Hinsdale interior designer Lauren Ashley Allan says the key theme for 2021 is something we learned from the recent health crisis—focus on the things that

make you happy. “It applies to all kinds of items in your home,” explains Allan, who recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of her eponymous firm, Lauren Ashley Allan Interior Design and Architecture Studio. “My two kids Cleo and Van make it more fun to celebrate holidays now, because you can bring them into holiday traditions young and take them through the design process with you.” When it was time to go Halloween pumpkin shopping last month, she opted to take 4-year-old Cleo and 18-month-old Van to a local farm rather than buying décor or pumpkins from the store. “We selected them together and they learned about where they come from,” she says. “We mixed colors, sizes, shapes. I am teaching them to have fun with scale and to be bold with their choices! It’s all about the experience and building family traditions. Plus, Cleo and Van both are excited and proud of what H I N S D A L E L I V I N G    55

Pret a Party

Hinsdale architect and interior designer Lauren Ashley Allan shares her favorite tips for planning the ultimate holiday soiree. LIGHT THE WAY While it might initially get overlooked, lighting is an easy way to dramatically alter the vibe of any space. Used effectively, it evokes mood and sets the pace in terms of elegance and glamour. From candles to dimmer switches or a roaring fireplace, a warm glow adds an inviting allure to the mix. Everything and everyone (from appetizer pairings to the guests) looks better in great light. Try to avoid harsh down lighting that creates unwanted shadows. If you don’t have dimmer switches, you can switch out your light bulbs for a warmer, softer hue. Even adding touches of exterior lighting in the garden helps to extend the inside out and make your spaces feel connected to nature. Luxury is a perfectly lit party.

SPICE IT UP Mix and match tableware for a graphic feel. The soulful juxtapositions of metallic and winter whites is my go-to holiday palette. Pattern mixing captures a sense of easy elegance and infuses even the most refined setting with an effortlessly chic spirit, keeping the mood fun and spontaneous. This especially applies to fine china. If you don’t have enough of a particular place setting to accommodate the full guest list, break the rules! Mix and match family china patterns from your wedding or grandparents for a look that is meaningful, artful and eclectic. Use complementary colors and a hierarchy of scale and texture that is vibrant, yet harmonious. It can then be tied together with your linens and florals. My go-to floral is Phillip’s Flowers in Hinsdale, they can do anything. FESTIVE FRANGRANCE Scent your home with holiday cheer. Before an event, try choosing a single scent to place about your space in entryways, powder rooms, and gathering areas. I always start cooking before the guests arrive so that the house smells inviting. Stick to unscented candles around catering and bar set-ups to allow the food to shine on its own. Candles can bathe the environment in rich, soothing tones. Holiday aromas in wood, cinnamon, or sage add a festive touch. CONCEPT COCKTAILS Ingredient-focused mixology. A cleverly named beverage cultivates a vibe that is thoughtful and special, such as: Fruits of Labor Margarita, Magic Hour Moscow Mule, or Harvest Moon Mojito from cocktailcourier.com. Choosing an easy, signature cocktail for the evening can simultaneously streamline the bar menu, add a collective holiday spirit and a whimsical welcome. Even with a full bar, cocktails pre-prepped and served upon arrival keep bar lines abbreviated while receiving guests in style. Colorful drink garnishes like flowers, fruit, or mint add a pop of color. ARTFUL ACCESSORIES Guests will remember the little things

that make an event stand out. Elevated barware is one of my favorite places to splurge. It adds so much to the party experience and is fun for me to curate! It is all about the art of entertaining. From patterned straws to brass bottle stoppers, setting the scene with spirited accents and soulful accessories channels an unexpected, distinct voice. Add an extra special touch with personalized cocktail napkins that are cheeky and fun.

they mixed together.” Allan, whose design pedigree includes working as a Senior Designer for Kelly Wearstler and Creative Director for Nate Berkus, says these same concepts will be applied to her family’s Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s holiday décor and entertaining plans as well. Drawing influences from vintage books and magazines from France and Italy, her signature take on modern glam is all about bringing in unexpected elements and accents you can’t find anywhere else. “A party is always in season. Come up with a concept such as mixed metals, be bold, and have fun!” she says. “Set-up a home bar that guests will flock to. It should look festive and appetizing. Before you start, make sure you’re pulling in tabletop and bar accessories from different sets. A mix of materials, like brass and ceramics, helps it look curated and rich, like you’re using a fun group of things you’ve collected over the years. I like to bring in bigger pieces that are both functional well as decorative, such as a large organic bowl to hold ice and sodas.” Allan says holiday entertaining is also the perfect opportunity to put your own signature touch on décor. Rather than rushing out to buy new serving plates or bowls, open the china cabinet to see what’s already there that can be repurposed in a new way. “Conversation pieces make the bar more interest-

10/14/21 3:32 PM

ing,” she explains. “Introduce a select amount of glassware, leaving most out of site behind the bar, with only the frequently used and beautiful decanters up front. Bring in a beautiful tray to give height to different things or a raised tray as a platform for small plates and more accents. Plus, you can slide things under it for extra space.” Allan also likes to keep a “dialogue with the outdoors,” bringing in fall and winter leaves and branches to add color and height to the bar. Even the smallest details like pretty, well-chosen bartender’s accessories can set the tone for a party that guests will be talking about into next year. “For instance, serve a small dish of olives, with vintage brass tableware and dish. Scale is important and if everything is big, nothing will shine on its own,” she adds. “When you’re setting up, think about the flow of the guests. Arrange things so they can come, get their drink, their olive, a napkin, a straw—it should be seamless.” This carefully curated attention to detail has defined Allan’s own signature style over the last year as she has made her dream of opening her own firm come true.

“I am so thankful for the incredible support and outreach by friends, family, vendors, contractors, and acquaintances. Our team, the Hinsdale community, and the community that we have built around the country on social media is so special, people who truly want to support a female-founded business,” says Allan, who is currently working on renovations and high-end, new construction residential projects around the country from the Chicago area to Long Beach, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Florida, and Los Angeles. “It’s important for me to stop and remember to enjoy the journey as each day brings something new. I feel so fortunate to love my work and share that with the world. All you can do is work hard and hope you can make the world better through whatever it is you do.” She says this holiday season will be even more special for her and many others as we emerge from the pandemic. “I am so excited to be with friends and family again!” Keep reading for more of Lauren Ashley Allan’s insider décor and holiday entertaining tips. Tree Time When it comes to trimming the tree, Lauren Ashley Allan says, “the sky’s the limit.” Here are five ways to reinvent this Christmas classic. 1. In lieu of color (skip the traditional red), decorate with all winter whites—white sparkly lights, head to toe white garland, white flowers, and even the ornaments. give lots of textures and a fun vibe for any space. One year we even included an all-white peacock for a whimsical touch! 2. Reinvent your version of the Christmas tree each year. If your tree is artificial, go with a real one this season. Also, you can have more than one tree and they can each be decorated differently with a different concept based on the room it is in, or different size such as a table tree. If you have kids or grandkids, one tree can be just for them … with all custom-made ornaments (also a fun project for the kids!). Try pasta garland, colorful pipe-cleaners, and paper cut-outs.. 1. Go for a tree with a more natural vibe. In lieu of a traditional tree skirt, do a seagrass tree collar. Mix in all white lights, matte white, or down-to-earth colored ornaments instead of shiny, and top it with an unlacquered brass star. Mix and match fun neutral sand color gift papers or buy craft paper and paint your own using white painterly strokes. 1. Try an ultra-glam, jeweled tree that is dripping with crystal garland, sparkling ornaments, and dazzling colors for a luxe look all its own. Add unlacquered brass and mixed metal tone accents throughout the tree. 1. Embrace Chinoiserie chic. Use holiday classic ball ornaments but get them in only blue and white china patterns. It’s so much fun to give your tree a concept and go all in with it—be bold and have fun! Then you can even match your table décor to your tree, depending on the room the tree is in. hen Elena Victoria (EV) was just 12 years old, her grandmother taught her how to sew. While the two of them worked to complete curtains for her bedroom, she realized just how easy sewing was. She ran home that evening to start on her first dress. “I was filled with excitement over the scrappy dress,” she says with a laugh. “It was then I knew that I would someday become a fashion designer, deciding on the label ELENA VICTORIA.” After finishing her degree in Fashion Design & Technology at Purdue University, EV was hired as a designer for Abercrombie Kids in Ohio, creating digital patterns and unique designs for their denim line. Despite the new and exciting challenges that came with such a job, she longed for a more creative career. A year later, she left to start her own business, ELENA VICTORIA. In 2016, EV decided to expand her offerings into Metro Detroit, where her fiancé, now husband, resided. The company grew quickly, reaching over 700 students within five years. While her sewing class offerings grew, so did her custom design line. “Before I graduated from Purdue, I had taught hundreds of students how to sew,” she says. “I developed a fun and unique program that simplifies the art of designing custom clothing, making it achievable for kids of all ages.” As EV filled her classes with many returning students, she quickly realized they were coming back for more than just a master sewing class. “As their skills grew, so did their confidence,” EV says. “After completing each garment, you could see them stand a little taller, shoulders back, proud of their work. I saw myself in these kids and remember feeling that same accomplishment and joy.” Knowing she had created something special, EV hired several teachers in the Detroit and Chicago areas to help her sewing school expand. “COVID was a challenging time for all businesses. I knew I had to think outside the box,” EV says. “Parents were looking for activities to lead their children away from screens, and our classes were just the thing. Class formats were adjusted to keep students safe, most of them were held outside, in garage bays, and in large basements. During such a challenging time for kids, our in-home sewing classes met the needs of our clients.” EV recruits only the best talent to help her run classes. “In addition to having a very impressive skill set, these instructors are helping build confidence in our students, which is our primary mission.

It’s very fulfilling to watch my EV sewing students go on to study fashion design in college,” she says. “It’s incredible to think that I played a part in making that happen.” Elena believes that inspiring youth to follow their dreams is of the utmost importance, especially when it comes to her talented interns. Her mission is to help these college students accomplish their professional goals and excel in their career.

“One of my teachers dreamed of opening a clothing boutique of her own—and she did,” EV explains. “I have another teacher who wanted to design her own jewelry line. She launched it last year, selling to boutiques in the Chicagoland area. My objective is to help my teachers achieve their dreams, while inspiring students to do the same.” When EV moved back to Chicago last May, she left 700 students in Detroit in the capable hands of her teachers. She’s now cultivating her student base in Chicago and nearby suburbs. “Our boutique sewing classes are taught by real designers in the industry looking to make a positive impact through their passion for art and design,” she explains. “As I continue to hire and recruit more talent, I’m able to take on more of the management role in overseeing these classes as a true business, while continuing to design gowns,” she says. “We are expanding our offerings into new suburbs and excited to be back home in Chicago where this all began.” With so much attention to the quality programming she’s offering students, it’s hard to believe that this entrepreneur has any time to work on her custom designs. “When I first started my dress line, I said ‘yes’ to too many

things,” she remembers. “I think there was a year when I made 40 custom dresses. I was stretching myself too thin. Now that my brand is more established, I exclusively commit to four to six brides a year, allowing me to dedicate the proper time and energy into each design.” It was EV’s own wedding gown that truly launched her as a reputable designer. “Once people discovered I had made my own gown, orders followed quickly,” she says. “Today, I love that I can design custom dresses for women of any age specifically made for them. It really is a dream come true.” To learn more about Elena Victoria, visit elenavictoria.co.

Shrimp & Grits

SWEET HOME

NAPERVILLE It’s a Southern Thing Kitchen & Bar is a bona fide North Carolina treasure.

Y

ou can order yourself a bowl of real-deal North Carolina grits anytime you want ’em at It’s a Southern Thing Kitchen & Bar in Naperville. Lunch. Brunch. Dinner. Spring. Summer. Fall. Winter. Like your mama’s love, they ain’t ever going away. “We stand by our grits,” says General Manager Martin Fuger, a Navy vet who also oversees the restaurant’s impressive cocktail list. You have to appreciate a confident kitchen. I’m a firm believer that any Southern diner worth its weight in salt pork should possess a

deep and abiding faith in their grits. Throw in a server who can preach about their power with a rapture usually reserved for TV evangelists, and you know you’re in very good hands. Being that we’re in Naperville, the pitch here is a little more humble, but the grits will still save your Midwestern soul all the same. The recipe comes from executive chef Pete Susca, a Jerseyborn boy who was baptized in the ways of Southern cooking after a move to North Carolina. Susca makes sure his Naperville kitchen makes the grits the same

way they do at his sister restaurant in Durham, North Carolina: stone-ground grits folded with enough butter and cream to make Julia Child blush, followed by a few folds of white-cheddar cheese to keep things honest. If all this sounds slightly off-kilter—a North Carolina-based Southern diner, overseen by a New Jersey-born chef, tucked away in a Naperville strip mall—rest assured, you can leave your apprehension at the front beer taps. One of It’s a Southern Thing’s great charms is the way it whittles away skepticism—dish by dish, smile by smile, perfectly fried hush puppy by perfectly fried hush puppy—by serving big portions of Southern classics at extraordinarily affordable prices. Fuger chalks it up the generous servings—order the “Peteloaf ” meatloaf, made from equal parts ground beef and ground bacon, and you’ll get two mini loaves to share—to good old-fashioned Southern hospitality. “That’s just another Southern thing,“ he says. But even more impressive is the fact we’d happily re-order everything we ordered. We loved, for instance, the chicharrón crispness of the house’s hand-battered fried green tomatoes. Those beautiful unripe nightshades are wonderfully acidic, but they’re paired with a host of sweet and spicy countermeasures: Smears of pimento cheese, a darn fine homemade garlic ranch as well as one of the best bacon jams in the area. Like just about everything here, there’s nothing dainty about

that bacon jam. It arrives looking like a huge ball of candied bacon, spooned onto the plate as if it were a giant scoop of ice cream. Suffice to say the kitchen uses real bacon—not packaged bits—and a shot or two of Bourbon to make it go down extra easy. Truth is, it’s so tasty you’ll thumb your nose at every other side-o-bacon in town. That’s one of the great secrets of Susca’s place. It enthusiastically leans into the sweet accents that the Southern table loves so dear. The house’s corn hush puppies, flecked with jalapeno but never overtly spicy are delicious all by their lonesome, but if you frost them with the house’s whipped honey butter, you’re going to experience a French-toast level of decadence. The house’s savory dishes are just as impressive. We happily

Cocktails

polished off a pound of smoked chicken wings—try saucing them with Susca’s Carolina BBQ glaze—and were overjoyed to find a tray of pulled pork—no bun needed—paired with a juicy mound of bacon-studded collards and cup of spicy slaw. Lore has it that the Jersey-born Susca initially couldn’t understand why Southerners were so particular about the time, reverence, and care shown to the smallest of kitchen rituals. “It’s a Southern thing,” they told him. “You’ll understand some day.” Something tell us that a big old swath of Naperville is going to learn that same lesson real soon.

It’s a Southern Thing Kitchen & Bar is located at 1727 Freedom Drive in Naperville. Call 331-457-5336 or visit getsouthernfood.com

Although It’s a Southern Thing boasts 47 beers on tap, its dangerously smooth cocktail list is the real revelation.

It’s a Southern Thing:

We won’t give away the “supersecret techniques” that turn this bourbon-based milk punch into a color as clear as a bottle of vodka, but suffice to say it’s a triumph, which goes down as easy as a rocks glass full of sweet tea.

Blackberry Better Have my Money: A blend of dry rosé, blackberry moonshine and simple syrup delivers a fullthroated blast of berry flavors without a hint of bramble. Strained and iced up, it’s a sweet sipper that pairs well with the house barbecue.

JOUR NEYS Niyama Private Islands Maldives Aerial

NIYAMA PRIVATE ISLANDS A Maldivian oasis offers lavish luxury in a land of shimmering sands, crystal waters, and mesmerizing vistas.

A

WORDS BY DUSTIN O’REGAN

s our seaplane descended toward Niyama Private Islands, we observed two verdant oases rimmed by white beaches and floating in an infinite sea of blue. The two islands—aptly dubbed Chill and Play—are connected via a slim bridge. “Chill” is the island of choice for guests seeking complete relaxation while “Play” is for those desiring a bit more activity. Both are easily accessible via bicycle or golf cart depending on your daily mood. Seaplane

ACCOMMODATIONS Upon arrival, we met our Thakuru Wisham (aka villa butler), who escorted us to our lavish overwater villa on Chill. Our new home for the week was one of the five ultra-chic accommodations of “The Crescent”—the resort’s secluded crown jewel. Accessible via a private boardwalk, The Crescent’s five villas are often rented for large family gatherings. Our villa was extraordinary in every way—immense is the only term that could describe the living areas, the three pools (one an infinity pool running the length of the villa), and the many decks. Opening the massive wooden front door, we entered the foyer that unveiled a modern living space boasting a comfortable indoor seating salon, a dining area, and a full bar. The separate kitchen was stocked with a popcorn machine and every imaginable goody and libation (as if the setting wasn’t intoxicating enough). Passing through the foyer in the opposite direction, floor-to-ceiling sliding doors opened to reveal a spacious bedroom with a sumptuous bed crowned by a dramatic etched-glass work of art. The ultra-modern bathroom matched the bedroom in size housing an enormous soaking tub, an outdoor shower, and a translucent wall overlooking two decks and the spa pool. We often found messages written on the giant mirror above the floating dual sinks—

JOUR NEYS notes welcoming us to the island, bidding us farewell, and a very touching note congratulating my daughter on her straight-A marks (we received her report card while visiting and the staff must Ocean Villa with pool on The Crescent

have overheard our excitement). Outside, we found a playground perched over the crystal-clear water. The far deck sported a staircase into the Indian Ocean allowing easy access to the warm lagoon from which we could see a distant reef rising from the ocean’s floor. Plush lounge chairs occupying the next deck and comfortable couches on the infinity pool’s veranda made for sublime sunbathing. When shade was our preference, we followed a walkway of stepping “stones” to a shallow pool. The villa’s glass walls encased the smaller pool on three sides, providing the perfect afternoon respite. Beyond the small pool which was separated from the infinity pool by the stepping stones, was another veranda with a plush round covered dais. The patio on the far end, we dubbed the “breakfast nook.” Here, shaded from the early morning sun, we dined on lavish breakfast trays. Many mornings we awoke as the sun rose above the foggy breath of the ocean, creating a sunrise worthy of Monet. Throughout the day, we were captivated by the sweeping ocean views visible from the verandas and through the villa’s floor-to-ceiling windows. Equally as beautiful, the island sunsets filled the sky with color as the sun slipped beneath the horizon. These scenes and everything about Niyama reminded us of Mother Nature’s extensive artistic repertoire. On our departure date, the resort offered us a beach villa for the day as our flight wasn’t until midnight. As we ran down the white beach into the aquamarine sea, we agreed the beach villa did not disappoint. Floating in the soft water, we felt buoyant and deliriously happy with the sun on our shoulders. Our open-air bathroom—completely open to the elements—proved the perfect place to rinse off the sea’s salt. GLOBAL GASTRONOMY Niyama is a culinary destination. We dined on our patio most mornings with a few occasions at the resort’s poolside restaurant, Epicure. The breakfast menu offered an endless array of culinary treasures in a picture-perfect setting which overlooks a painter’s

palette of ocean blue hues. It was at Epicure that my husband surprised us one evening with a “Destination Dining” experience. The resort created a lit pathway to an elaborate seaside table surrounded by torches and a lantern-laden tree. Dining on fine Indian cuisine under a bright moon while sitting in a ring of fire, dipping our toes in the sand and listening to the sounds of the sea was simply magical. Another memorable dinner was had at NEST, which offers avant-garde Asian cuisine atop Niyama’s tropical forest. Dining in the treetops surrounded by exotic birds chatting amongst themselves, we devoured sushi presented in the most imaginative ways. The showstopper was a platter of sashimi served in an ice shell – a gravity and heat-defying triumph. An evening at TRIBAL convinced us that we had entered the lands of the Sahara. From the Masaai warriors who greeted us to the spiced aromas floating through the air, we knew we were in for a treat. Beneath a curved wooden dome, we feasted on heavy pots of stewed African game and hearty vegetables. The experience showered our senses with the tastes, sounds, and smells of traditional tribal cooking. Subsix, Edge, and Edge bar occupy a dramatic compound a half kilometer out to sea and are accessible via a short boat ride from Niyama. Edge’s chefs create contemporary masterpieces showcasing the succulent seafood found in and around the Maldives. Six meters below Edge, the underwater restaurant Subsix is outfitted in aquatic-themed décor. Seated in our anemone-like chairs, seashells tinkling overhead, and our reef friends swimming to and fro just beyond the glass, we enjoyed our favorite meal of the stay. A first course of Lobster Tataki with watermelon, rhubarb, and passion fruit dressing was followed by a warm Maldivian octopus carpaccio with sweet chili dressing, squid ink crackers, and a lemon confit. My husband and daughter chose the pan-seared seabass with eggplant caviar, cherry tomato, spinach, and yuzu gel while I feasted upon the braised lamb shoulder with taro, red wine shallots, glazed baby vegetables, and lemon. The darling Yuzu Delight—shaped like a small delicate apple and consisting of coconut Chantilly, yuzu curd, Thai basil, white chocolate, and coconut ice cream ended the meal perfectly. Venturing above the sea, we stopped at Edge bar a “hot” nightclub with a cocktail menu to make mixologists swoon. The club’s dramatically pitched roof hovered above an oceanside setting drenched in a hypnotic purple glow and throbbing with electronic beats—an entirely intoxicating experience. ACTIVITIES The resort offers a myriad of activities guaranteed to burn off those delicious calories. We toured the islands daily on our villa bicycles (each bearing a plaque inscribed with our names). On our morning rides, a long-legged heron greeted us with a slow flap of his wings as he gracefully rose from beneath the boardwalk and into the air. Leaving The Crescent and following winding sand pathways, we passed powdery white beaches, a ring of overwater bungalows, beach villas, shops, tennis courts, the kids’ club, snorkeling hot spots, and endless opportunities to capture that picture-perfect moment. In the early afternoon, we often stopped at the bridge connecting Chill and Play to see the blacktip reef sharks gathered for afternoon playdates.

A favorite pastime was watching the surfers “hang ten” at Play. Many of these wave warriors had traveled from around the world to surf Niyama’s famous waves. This fun spot sported the Surf Shack, ocean-side swings, and the best waves on the island. If you are feeling food truck vibes, the Surf Shack serves burgers, small bites, and sweets. In the early evenings, we visited for sunsets, cool sundowner cocktails, and an even cooler DJ. In hopes of hanging ten ourselves, we took surfing lessons in the blue lagoon near the Water Sports Center. On more leisurely days, we opted for glass kayaks and paddleboards as we watched thrillseekers enjoy jet skis, parasailing, and kitesurfing. One afternoon we jetted off in search of turtles. Our large double-decker speed boat offered a thrilling ride and glorious views of several other island resorts and the surrounding ocean. Visiting a distant reef, we donned our masks and fins and headed out on our quest. Before coming upon our first turtles, we encountered a 15foot nocturnal nurse shark and several blacktip reef sharks. Most days we opted to take advantage of the excellent snorkeling just a short distance from our villa. We would descend our ocean-bound staircase and head to the reef ’s coral gardens. Each morning and afternoon visit offered entirely different varieties of fish. From polka dots to stripes to round bodies and pin-thin shapes, we marveled at the elaborate aquatic attire fashioned by Mother Nature.

SERVICE Niyama’s service is impeccable. The staff strives to be on call for every wish, often anticipating a need before a word is even uttered. Our Thakuru Wisham noticed our original itinerary would result in a long wait in Malé before our flight home. He rearranged the itinerary so we could take a speedboat to a nearby island for a later domestic flight to Malé, shortening our layover by several hours, an option I had no idea was possible. When we arrived in Malé, we were greeted by another Niyama employee who took our bags, whisked us through check-in and customs, and set us up in a lounge with dinner before our flight. Again, completely unexpected and enormously appreciated. To our dear hosts, “shukuriyaa” or Maldivian for “thank you.” I treasure traveling with my family, often finding that escaping the everyday for adventures in foreign lands creates deep familial bonds. Whether the adventures are on a surfboard, on sand, or beneath the sea in search of hawksbill turtles, family trips are worth their weight in gold. Visit Niyama and see for yourself why it is rated #4 in the “Best Resorts in the World” category of Conde Nast Traveler Reader’s Choice Awards. We are pretty sure it will be #1 for your family, as it was for ours. For more information, visit niyama.com or follow on Instagram @niyamamaldives

SPA What better way to end our magnificent vacation than to be pampered at an overwater spa? Our visit to the Drift Spa—a paradise cocooned within a paradise—began with selecting an IV infusion of choice administering a customized blend of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. We were then guided down a peaceful sandy path to an overwater treatment room. For the next 90 minutes, our expert practitioners worked wonders. Using a combination of Hawaiian lomilomi, Japanese shiatsu, Thai traditional massage, and aroma oils, muscles were first relaxed and then revitalized. After the treatments, we practically floated back to our villa.

or Chongsook Park, the tailoring business isn’t exactly a family tradition, but both her mother and sisters are wellversed in the field of fashion. “I picked up the needle and thread sewing naturally by just watching them and enjoy it very much,” Park says. Park started her custom tailoring shop nearly three decades ago with a shop adjacent to the McGrath Lexus dealer on Ogden Avenue in Westmont. When the dealership expanded and took over the property, she scaled back to raise her family, continuing to serve her long-time customers. “I took a break from the tailoring business for about eight years and worked at home during that time for my regular customers,” she says. “I wanted to spend more time with my children when they were young.” Park is now getting back in the game with a new custom tailor shop, Tuxedo & Prom, in Hinsdale. Tuxedo & Prom prides itself on precision tailoring through experience and knowledge of the master-craft of custom tailoring and fitting. “We are eager to help you develop your wardrobe for all aspects of your life, from work to an evening out,” she says. “It is not about the clothes. It’s all about yourself in well-fitted clothes.” Park says that dressing up is an art that enhances one’s personality, and that perfect fitting clothes are the key to shaping an attractive personality. She deploys a multi-step measurement process,

developed over decades, to ensure that her client’s style is perfectly realized. Along with the new store, Tuxedo & Prom boasts a robust online presence “We specialize in custom alterations and our online store is the way to reach out to us and leave a mark,” she says. “We can meet the tailoring needs for most of our valued and satisfied customers from all over the world. Your selection of clothing, along with our assistance, makes the online experience a true style indulgence.” Park’s services include fittings for all different types of clothes, and the new storefront is located in a convenient location. It is also very easy to book fittings online at tuxedoandprom.com. “We do alterations of all clothing so that they fit our customers perfectly,” Park says. “Unfortunately, we do not rent tuxedos and other clothing.” Years ago, Park and her husband Tae Park, who runs Foss Organic Cleaners in Hinsdale, made Hinsdale their home, and she’s happy she’s been able to raise her family in the community. “Both my husband and I like Hinsdale very much. Hinsdale is a beautiful town,” she says. “The people who live here are very nice and many of our customers are our friends. My family loves to live in Hinsdale!” Tuxedo & Prom is located at 25 S. Quincy Street in Hinsdale, 630631-7445, tuxedoandprom.com.

Profile CANCER SCREENING GUIDELINES WORDS BY CHIRAG PATEL, MD PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS

B

elow are the guidelines for cancer screening for ages 50 and above. For both men and women, recommended screenings include colon cancer and in certain cases lung cancer. Men also test for prostate cancer and women for breast and cervical cancers. Colon cancer screening starts at age 50, although screening is recommended at an earlier age in high-risk family history cases and other medical factors. There are various testing options available including fecal immunochemical test (FIT), guaiac-based fecal occult blood test (gFOBT), stool DNA test, or MT-sDNA, CT colonography or virtual colonoscopy, and the colonoscopy. Capsule endoscopy is a newer procedure where the patient swallows a capsule with cameras on each end taking thousands of pictures, transmitted wirelessly to a recorder. Although less invasive than the colonoscopy, it is not the first choice for cancer screening and is more often used for small intestinal surveillance, where scopes cannot reach. Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. Lung cancer screening is considered on a case-by-case basis. In patients with a chronic smoking history, low-dose CT scans are recommended for early lung cancer detection. The frequency of these scans should be determined by your primary physician or lung specialist (pulmonologist). For men, prostate cancer screening is recommended at age 50 on-

ward. The common blood test called the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is often ordered with routine blood testing performed on a yearly basis. However, the PSA is not specific for prostate cancer as its level can be elevated due to other conditions such as infection, elevated parathyroid hormone, or an enlarged prostate. Physicians have varying opinions on whether to test and how frequently testing should occur. Women with an average risk of breast cancer should undergo regular screening mammography starting at age 45 years. Women aged 45 to 54 years should be screened annually. Women 55 years and older should screen every other year. Screening should continue biennially with a life expectancy of 10 years or longer. Other newer testing includes blood marker tests and MRI of the breast, although these tests should not replace mammogram screening. All women should begin cervical cancer testing (screening) at age 21. Women aged 21 to 29, should have a Pap test every 3 years. At age 30, a pap test is combined with an HPV test every 5 years. This interval testing should continue until the age of 65. The testing interval changes based on test results, high-risk factors, and other medical conditions based on your primary care and/or gynecologist’s recommendations. There are always exceptions to the rule, so be sure to discuss your personal health and cancer screening with your primary care physician.
