PRING MAY officially begin on March 20th, but the grey skies and whipping winds of its early days feel more like “Life in a Northern Town” than “Here Comes the Sun.” Escaping to a warm weather destination, done without worry in the past, is a much more complicated endeavor in this age of COVID-19. With these thoughts in mind, we created the March issue to warm and inspire, bridging the chasm between the proverbial lion and lamb days.

The House & Garden department is filled with ideas to make the most of time at home, beginning with St. Patrick’s Day. Though Chicago’s famous parade has been cancelled this year for safety’s sake, we have a classic-with-atwist Irish cocktail in the Entertaining section that is perfect for raising a glass indoors. I plan to enjoy it while watching Harrison Ford weave his way through parade floats, evading Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive. A deliciously nourishing main course recipe by Zen of Slow Cooking co-founders Meg Barnhart and Jane McKay appears in The Dish. With bright flavors and warming substance, this fan favorite dish is ideal for early spring. Move over, corned beef and cabbage! In the Garden offers advice on planning and planting in the month of March. Believe it or not, sowing seeds in prepared beds can happen mid-month, giving early-bird gardeners salad bowl ingredients long before local farmers’ markets open their doors.

Another highlight is this month’s On My Nightstand. Life Coach and Cognitive Behavioral Practitioner T-Anne Pierce shares her current project, The Confidence Triangle, which offers soul and science-based confiTHE LIFESTYLE LIST dence training for tween and teen girls. AZZO DI VINO winery opened its outdoor courtyard last summer in Highwood amid the COVID-19 crisis, offering up wine tastings and live music for a socially distanced escape. As a first-generation Italian American, Master W inemaker Lorenzo DiVito initially learned the craft from his father. In this genuine local microwinery, DiVito creates, blends, and bottles all wine on site. With a robust offering of Rosé, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet, Merlot, Old Vine Zinfandel, and a variety of proprietary blends, there

is something for everyone to enjoy.

Here you can perch at the bar in the Tasting Room to sample wines, relax in the cozy Gallery and Hearth Rooms (with a collection of portraits from around the world), or linger outside in the expansive, string-lit courtyard as the weather warms, listening to live music.

TOULOUSE-LAUTREC AND THE CELEBRITY CULTURE OF PARIS EXHIBITION AT THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO

W

ELCOME TO Montmartre—an outlying Parisian neighborhood known for its cabarets and dance halls— where a flamboyant nightlife exploded in the late 19th century. Among the artists, performers, and ambitious entrepreneurs who called this bohemian quartier home was painter and printmaker Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who made a career depicting its most colorful personalities using the relatively new advertising medium of large-scale posters.

This focused installation of his works comprises posters, paintings, and painted objects. Dynamic and instantly recognizable, Lautrec’s images filled the streets of Paris and helped catapult his clients to fame. Through cutting-edge experiments in lithography, Lautrec emphasized the distinctive traits of singers and dancers such as Jane Avril, Aristide

Bruant, and May Milton, as well as actors, writers, and cabaret owners, to distinguish them from their competition. Even as he helped make celebrities of others, Lautrec himself became a celebrity of sorts through the popularity of his posters and paintings, notable for their singular style and unconventional materials and techniques.

ONTEMPORARY ABSTRACT artist Linda Ann Weber has a new exhibition featuring her abstract works at The Gallery in Lake Forest, with an artist reception planned for March 10.

The show’s title, Evolving Attitude, was chosen

by Weber partly as an extension of her previous two Art Attitude shows, but mainly, as a call-out to the volatility of society’s collective mindset and attitude amidst the pandemic and political climate. “The state of our well-being is constantly shifting and greatly impacted by political, economical, and emotional fluctuations,” Weber says. “I wanted to tap into what people have been feeling and offer a place of escape through my artwork.”

Weber describes her creative process as serendipitous. When asked about the inspiration for her abstract work, Remembering Lake Winnebago, she smiles.

“Ah! The title came after the work was finished.

Looking at it, I was reminded of the way it felt to be at my grandparents’ cottage on Lake Winnebago. The feeling of swimming in the lake, the feeling of happiness and freedom and summer as a child. But the inspiration for the painting itself ? There wasn’t one—other than what I was feeling and seeing in the moment working with these beautiful blues and aquas and greens. None of my paintings are meant to look like a specific landscape, but sometimes, they do.”

For Weber, color and pattern have always simply flowed. As a little girl, sitting down with pile of markers or crayons, she would take a blank sheet of paper and start making patterns until the whole space was filled. “The colors and shapes just came. Nothing was planned, it was just intuitive,” she says.

Growing up blocks from the lake in Evanston, Weber was encouraged in artistic expression by her mother who painted and drew, and by a sister, who is also an artist. Weber’s natural knack led her into a career in graphic arts. She spent a few years in packaging design before moving to publication design, shaping magazines and books, and leading teams as a creative director for Morton Grovebased Publications International. A stint living in North Carolina then led her to explore freer forms of artistic expression. In Charlotte, Weber met the owner of Blue Pony Gallery, which had a press and specialized in exhibiting monotypes, etchings, woodcuts, and other art made with printmaking techniques.

“I was really drawn to printmaking and started taking classes there, making monotypes and monoprints where I would put a piece through the press several times, adding different layers of drawing, collage, and ink. But I wanted to explore other forms of art and so, I started painting.”

By 2013, Weber was painting full time, creating multiple series of smaller abstract work and larger individual works. Initially, Weber says segueing from graphic design to facing a blank canvas was challenging. “Since the paintings come from within, it can make you feel vulnerable, like you are baring your soul. Also, when I was working as a designer, there was always somebody standing over your shoulder saying, ‘Make this red’ or ‘Use this font.’ Now—all of a sudden—it was total freedom, which at first felt terrifying but then became very empowering.”

Like her childhood drawings, Weber’s work today is still abstract and intuitive. Working with acrylic paint, pencil, crayon, paper collage, and glazing mediums, she builds each composition in layers.

Until recently, most pieces ranged in size from about 30 x 30 inches to 30 x 40 inches. The addition of a new, larger studio space at her home in Winnetka means she will be adding larger-sized compositions to her body of work.

T

OO TIRED TO EXERT energy, I pile books on my nightstand, Dr. Seuss style, all teetering and hair raisingly offbalance. For added drama, my cartoonlike towers of books lean defyingly over fragile heirlooms and a trough of melatonin. Surface tension and dust hold it all together; it’s a psychological thriller.

What I need is a robotic arm, like they have in those towering, glass-enclosed wine cellars so popular in hotel bars near the airport. The kind where the arm glides, its hand extracting wine bottles with pinpoint accuracy. I need that. For my books.

There is one framed photo on my nightstand. It is of my husband and me hugging on a windswept beach. It’s a unicorn: I love my curves in this photo. It is a snapshot of simpler times, when our four kids were younger, before fate snagged itself on a barb, unraveling our lives like a run in a $2 pair of pantyhose. Before my husband had the stroke.

Don’t tell my mother, but during lockdown, I penned snarky phrases in elegant script on my grandmother’s fine Haviland teacups. I gave the cups to friends and kept one that reads “everyone’s judging you.” It still cracks me up. The teacup holds unemployed buttons, hair clips missing most teeth, reading light batteries, and my desert island necessities: Rose lip cream by Fresh and Caddis readers (believe the hype).

These days I’ve been repurposing my favorite Deseda silk twiggy scarf, Legends, as a decadent bookmark. Gotta manufacture your own joy, and finding unexpected luxury in my book each night delights me.

To clear my mind before bed, I like collections of short stories like Homesick for Another World by Ottessa Moshfegh.

Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey is gravelly, optimistic, and unexpectedly humble. Jennifer Weiner’s Big Summer isn’t emotionally demanding. I mean, who has the bandwidth for that anymore?

If the circuits in my head are looping fast and furious and I need serenity now, I reach for my heaviest hitter, Country Music Hair by Erin Duval. It’s everything you’d hope for in a book about country music hair. And, yes, it includes photos.

This book is gloriously trite but knowing country music mullets inspired someone to put pen to paper renews my faith in humanity. My soul soothed; Dolly Parton vibes help me drift off to sleep.

Backwards in High Heels by Tania Kindersley and Sarah Vine hasn’t left my nightstand in probably 12 years. It’s the muse for the book I hope to write one day.

N THE COCKTAIL world, the classics are classic for a reason: They are basic, time tested, and difficult to improve upon. Having a repertoire of ingredients in the home bar to mix a few classic cocktails, coupled with proper glassware and fresh garnishes, underpins one’s hosting abilities—serving a great drink goes a long way to making others feel welcome. November’s Entertaining piece featuring the martini—the most elegant cocktail—inspired last month’s contribution of my take on the classic daiquiri. But sometimes a little variation or riffing on a classic is a good way to mark a special occasion, especially when bellying up to bars staffed by professional mixologists is a rare occurrence in today’s world.

When Forest & Bluff extended an invitation to guest write for the Entertaining section again, I immediately thought of Will Witherow, friend, beverage manager, and head bartender at Live Oak in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia. Spending many hours at his bar, I have come to love his pragmatic approach to cocktails. One will never find a fancy drink name on his menu, though he certainly applies a culinary-like passion to everything he puts into a glass. Witherow will join me over the next few months, graciously sharing a few of his genius riffs that can be served to guests under the classic name—but will just taste better.

For this month’s St. Patrick’s Day holiday, we believe Irish Coffee to be a great start, as a shot of Jameson and a pint of Guinness easily stand on their own merits. The ingredients are simple: coffee, whiskey, simple syrup, and whipped cream.

Fresh ingredients made from scratch whenever possible are key. Coffee should be black (not flavored), freshly ground and brewed using your favorite method.

Use a respectable Irish whiskey—you can’t go wrong with Jameson, Tullamore, or Bushmills—or riff by substituting the whiskey base with Belle Isle Cold Brew Moonshine. Finally, ditch the canned whipped cream and make it from scratch by beating heavy cream for a few minutes. Step up the flavor profile (and proof ) of the whipped cream by adding a splash of Frangelico or Crème de menthe. A more creative approach to flavorful whipped cream is steeping Honey Nut Cheerios in the heavy cream before whipping—a nostalgic nod to those who drank the leftover cereal milk as a child.

Irish Coffee Serves one • • • • • •

1 1/2 ounces Irish whiskey 3/4 ounce simple syrup 4 ounces fresh black coffee Freshly whipped cream A sprinkle of nutmeg, for garnish Pour freshly brewed coffee into a glass mug or mug of your choice. Stir in whiskey and simple syrup. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg.

*To make Honey Nut Cheerios infused whipped cream, place 1 cup chilled heavy cream and ¾ cup Honey Nut Cheerios in a large jar with a tight-fitting lid. Shake vigorously and let steep for 20 minutes in the refrigerator. Strain through a fine mesh sieve, pressing gently on the cereal to release the flavored cream. Pour the chilled, strained cream into the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a whisk attachment or beat with a hand mixer.

When cream begins to thicken, add the sugar and beat until firm.

Cheers to a warm cocktail to help get through winter’s final throes.

S A YOUNG mother, Meg Barnhart found herself struggling each day to prepare a home-cooked meal while juggling a myriad of after school activities for her three children. This recipe, gigantes plaki in Greek, features large white beans smothered in a rich tomato sauce with fresh herbs and feta cheese. Plant-based, bright, and fresh for spring, it also happens to be super simple and delicious.

INSTRUCTIONS For the slow cooker: 1. Heat the oil in a skillet, sauté onion and garlic for 2 minutes, transfer to cooker. Stir in the beans, paprika, salt, Coq au Vin blend (or herbs de Provence), tomato puree, tomatoes, broth, and chard.

2. Cover and cook on low for 7 to 8 hours or high for 2 to 3 hours.

3. Stir in fresh herbs and crumble feta cheese over the top to serve.

For the Pressure Cooker: 1. Heat the oil on sauté function; sauté onion and garlic for 2 minutes. Stir in the beans, paprika, salt, Coq au Vin blend (or herbs de Provence), tomato puree, tomatoes, broth, and chard.

2. Secure the cooker lid and seal pressure valve; cook on Manual/Pressure for 8 minutes.

3. Quick Pressure Release.

4. Stir in fresh herbs and crumble feta cheese over the top to serve.

TIPS *Replace 2 cans drained beans with 2 cups (1 pound) butter beans, rinsed and unsoaked. Adjust cook time as follows: For the slow cooker: LOW: 9-10 hours or HIGH: 4 hours For the pressure cooker: 40 minutes This also makes a tasty soup! Simply increase the vegetable broth from 1 1/2 cups to 6 cups when cooking.

EARLY SPRING PLANTING

March brings the first gardening opportunities for those who are itching to dig in the dirt.

T MAY SEEM too early, but March is the ideal time to plan and begin planting a vegetable garden. In the first weeks of the month, it is great fun to peruse seed catalogs, seed company websites, and local garden centers. Organic, non-GMO seed company Renee’s Garden carries vegetable, herb, and flower varieties for home gardeners with exceptional flavor and garden performance, including timetested heirlooms. Botanical Interests seed company also carries many organic and heirloom seed varieties, and it has an easy-to-navigate website that includes Sow and Grow Guides for many of its seed offerings. If last season’s seed packets are kicking around in the mudroom, test the seeds’ ability to germinate by placing 10 or so between moist paper towels. Blown open a zip-top bag, add the seed filled paper towels and reseal, creating a de facto mini-green house. Keep warm and moist but out of direct sunlight, and if fewer than six sprout within five to seven days, it is time to purchase new ones.

Mid-month, it is time to pull on the Wellies and head outdoors to check the soil temperature with a soil thermometer, which is inexpensive and widely available at garden centers. Spinach and lettuces are frost hearty and will germinate in temperatures as low as 35 degrees, albeit more prolifically above 45 and below 70 degrees. Another general rule for early planting is that if the ground can be worked, coolseason vegetable seeds can be planted. Once sprouted, it is of the utmost importance to protect the foliage of new seedlings from frost, covering with sheets or floating row covers if the air temperature dips below

32 degrees at night. The good news is spinach and certain lettuces can be harvested in six to eight weeks, and delicious, peppery, easy-to-grow arugula will be ready within four weeks. Continue with successive sowings, every ten days for spinach and three weeks for head lettuce, throughout spring and early summer for a constant supply of salad.

When the soil warms up a bit more toward the end of March—a safe bet is consistent temperatures near 50 degrees—kale, radicchio, and pea seeds can be sown, as well as the seeds of broccoli and root vegetables like radishes, carrots, and onions. Peas, which should be grown on a small trellis or a fence unless they are an upright variety, will be ready in 60 to 70 days. Radishes—including the beautiful Easter egg variety—will be ready to pull within one month, and baby carrots as early as 50 to 60 days, depending on the variety. Seed packet directions should offer expected harvest times.

Observing the metamorphosis from tiny seed to salad bowl is incredibly rewarding. And before farmers’ markets have opened their doors and markets have received local, organic produce, the intrepid spring gardener will have crisp radishes and arugula salad waiting steps from his or her back door.

OR ANYONE who follows Mar’quone Edmonds on Instagram, he is likely to be the first post you see in your feed when you wake up in the morning. Because while the rest of us are squeaking out those last few minutes of beauty sleep, he is hitting the gym before his first clients arrive for their 5 a.m. workouts.

“I’ve never been a great sleeper,” says the larger-thanlife, former football player turned personal trainer who owns Quest Performance Training in Lake Bluff. “If I

start to toss and turn and can’t fall back to sleep in five minutes, I’m up.”

Early mornings were something that started for Edmonds when he was a child growing up in Waukegan.

His father was a deacon at the local church, his mother was involved with many of the church’s ministries, and he had one brother—just 10 months older, who ignited a fire in him to want to be the best.

“My older brother was good at everything,” Edmonds says. “He was the quarterback for the football team, homecoming king, prom king, and all of the girls thought he was pretty cool. I was just his younger brother.”

So when Edmonds was a freshman in high school, he would wake his father up at 5 a.m. to take him to the gym.

“I knew if I was working out, I’d have a chance at making a name for myself like my brother did.”

It paid off. Edmonds was heavily recruited to play college football, ultimately shaking hands with 28 NFL recruiters before he decided to play in Germany after graduating.

Knowing football wasn’t going to be his life forever, Edmonds joined the charismatic team that opened Orangetheory in Lake Forest in 2015. It was here that he first felt the pangs of being called to be a coach.

“That’s when my life really changed,” says Edmonds.

“After five years with them, I got to a point where I knew it was time to do my own thing,” he says. “One of the Orangetheory trainers I worked with was Anthony Campo.

His passion for coaching was contagious and I knew that coaching was the best thing for me. It was the only thing I ever worked harder at than football.” In 2019, with some seed money from his former college roommate Tim—a police officer in Park Ridge who was injured while on duty responding to a burglary—Edmonds opened Quest Performance Training.

It was not long before Edmonds—or “Coach Q” to most—reached household-name status. That is why when COVID-19 hit and he was forced to close his newly opened gym Edmonds really got to work.

“There’s a quote I heard a long time ago about how with big issues come big innovations,” he says. “I was able to sit, observe, and come up with a plan to overcome this situation.”

Edmonds recruited his friend and videographer to spend a day with him recording a week’s worth of exercises. In no time after making them available, 20 people purchased the workouts.

“I knew I was on to something,” he says. “People wanted to keep going. Each week, I released new workouts and then I realized people were going to need equipment, so I started renting out different pieces from the gym. New week, new exercises, new equipment.”

Then, as the weather improved, fitness studios were told they could hold classes outdoors. Edmonds was fortunate to receive permission from Lake Forest Academy to use their fields. Soon, he was leading five classes of 20 people per day.

“And from there it just kept going,” he says. “We were finally allowed to have classes again indoors and I knew I needed more space.” And with the larger gym came the addition of two new coaches, Courtney Johnson and Danny Gomez.

Part of the reason Edmonds moved Quest to its current larger location was his desire to coach the youth.

“I couldn’t stop thinking about the high school kids,” he says, “what it must have been like for these young athletes to all of the sudden have their seasons canceled.

Quest became their sanctuary. And then the little kids— our mini questors—they came next. They maybe needed this space the most.”

Even though the move to a larger gym was not supposed to happen for another year according to the goaldriven Edmonds, he knows it is part of a bigger plan that the universe has for him.

“I’ve never been one to put my spirituality on to other people, but God is a huge part of my life,” he says. “I chose the name ‘Quest’ for my gym instead of ‘journey’ because the word ‘quest,’ in its definition, says there’s an end goal.

There’s a purpose to what we do. I believe that’s why I’m here—to help as many people as I can to be the best they can be. I’m so grateful every day that I get to do this.”

ong-time Lake Forest resident Dr. Antreas Mesrobian decided a few years ago that he wanted to open a dental practice closer to home. So, early last year, he opened Lake Forest Family Dental, an office that provides top quality dental treatment for parents and their children.

“I’ve lived in Lake Forest for 25 years and wanted to be able to help people here and give them a place where they could go that offered a friendly, comfortable, no pressure environment,” Dr. Mesrobian says.

A graduate of Northwestern Dental School, Mesrobian comes from a family of physicians. He is known among his patients for his gentleness, in part because he had bad experiences as a child with dentists and doesn’t want anyone to have the same fear that he developed.

“I was good with my hands and interested in fixing things, so dentistry seemed like a natural choice,” Mesrobian says. “I love what I do, and I find joy in getting to know my patients and helping them maintain great oral health.”

Twenty years ago, Dr. Mesrobian brought in Dr. Ajesh Parikh and the two formed a successful business partnership.

They have a strong rapport with their clients, young and old, and provide a welcoming, unintimidating environment where patients can feel comfortable.

Dr. Parikh grew up in the south suburbs of Chicago and,

unlike Dr. Mesrobian, says he learned a lot from his childhood dentist.

“Growing up my dentist was a friend of my family and a family practitioner and he never talked down to you. He kept you involved in what was going on with the medicine,” Dr. Parikh says. “He had a great style and I thought, ‘I want to be a doctor like him.’”

Dr. Parikh, who studied and did his residency at Northwestern Dental School, flirted with medical school with an eye on becoming an oral surgeon, but his personality—he admits to being something of a talker—was more suited for dentistry.

The two doctors now run four dental practices in the Chicago area. In addition to Lake Forest, they also have locations in Lindenhurst, Algonquin, and Elk Grove Village.

Both doctors feel what sets them apart from other dentists is the personal attention they provide their clients, keeping the atmosphere light, and maintaining a sense of humor. As the dental industry has become more consolidated and focused more on profits, they’d rather stay focused on the personal.

“We talk to patients in simple language that they can understand. If someone comes in with pain or a concern, we address the issue that they came in for instead of pushing a huge treatment plan on them” Dr. Mesrobian says. “Patients appreciate that and come back because they feel like we treated them fairly.”

T

HERE IS something special happening in Lake Forest. After years of having one of the slower moving real estate markets on the North Shore, suddenly the numbers are skewing way up. In fact, according to Mark Pasquesi, president and managing broker of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, “the last two quarters of 2020 were the strongest quarters Lake Forest has ever seen. And then going into 2021, the markets are already off to a roaring start. So right now, with mortgage rates at an all-time low, it’s kind of just the perfect environment for strong real estate.”

Anne Geraghty Helms, her husband Paul, and their two children are one such family who decided to make the leap from the city to Lake Forest in 2019.

“We were both really drawn to Lake Forest. I think because it feels like its own small town. It’s far enough removed from the city that it stands on its own. And we have always dreamed of being small town people, but our careers have made that kind of impossible.”

Both Helms and her husband are attorneys who work at large firms in Chicago.

The couple had spoken about moving to the suburbs for years. And now that they have, there is no looking back. Helms says, “Lake Forest has that great feel. It is such a wonderful community. Everyone has been so welcoming.”

“I think you’re always nervous when you move somewhere new. But just after moving in, three neighbors came to our front door to introduce themselves, to offer us anything that we wanted or needed.

They couldn’t have been nicer. It’s such a change. It’s not that people in the city aren’t nice. It’s just not how the world works there.”

When they first moved, Helms said she was nervous about her kids crossing the street or riding their bikes by themselves. “And now they run around the neighborhood and I have to keep tabs on them, but in such a good way,” shares Helms.

One of Helms’ favorite things about Lake Forest is living amid the gorgeous natural surroundings.

“I think that’s really unique—the number of places where you can be in a residential area, but then also to have that connection to wonderful nature preserves. It is pretty rare. And the beach and lakefront make this community extraordinary. You can feel the community wide appreciation for the trees and all the natural beauty that we’re lucky enough to have surround us.”

It is clear that the Helms family is not the only one drawn to the many advantages that Lake Forest has to offer. “Lake Forest sales have outpaced any of the other North Shore communities. That’s been exciting for us to see. And the clear trend is movement from the city coming to the suburbs,” Pasquesi says.

He attributes this stepped-up movement to a variety of factors. “First and foremost, COVID-19 has

“I think we’ve seen over the last few months how schools bring our kids together, bring our community together.”

changed the way we all live, at least for the foreseeable future. When you look at what is attractive about the city in terms of restaurants, nightlife, entertainment … when COVID hit and all of that shut down, much of the attraction of the city went away.

On top of that, basic social distancing. It is hard to social distance in a 400-unit condo building. So people wanted space and they wanted yards and they wanted outdoor space.”

Pasquesi continues, “What’s kind of interesting is that prior to the pandemic, much of what people said about Lake Forest went against what most buyers wanted. Pre-COVID trends were gearing toward smaller homes, less maintenance, smaller yards, just overall kind of more efficient spaces. Then the pandemic hit and what Lake Forest homes had was exactly what people wanted. Larger homes, larger lots, more space between neighbors. What COVID did was make everything in the Lake Forest inventory highly attractive.”

“When you talk about pre-COVID, one of the knocks against Lake Forest when it comes to real estate was the distance from the city in terms of commuting for work every day. But now work from home is the new way. You don’t have as many people that will go to an office. I don’t think it’s going to go back to where people are going to be commuting into the city five days a week. Maybe it’s two days a week.

Maybe it’s work from home exclusively. So the tether to the city that was looked at as maybe not ideal for Lake Forest residents because of our distance is no longer an issue,” says Pasquesi.

Not to mention the many benefits Lake Forest offers that both Helms and Pasquesi point out. The award-winning schools. The incredible Department of Parks and Recreation. Lake Forest’s magnificent beachfront. And did we mention Market Square?

“Downtown Lake Forest is just awesome,” Helms says. “It is such a fun and friendly place to go. Plus it has such a vibrant mix of restaurants and shops.”

In fact, Helms is so taken with her new community, that she is running for the District 67 School Board. “I’ve learned a lot by having two kids at two different schools in this community. Especially in this unprecedented year. I’ve seen a couple of different ways that schools can operate because my kids were at a private school in the city. But a commitment to kids and education has been part of my practice forever.”

Helms is Director of Counsel for U.S. Pro Bono Programs for her law firm DLA Piper. She is responsible for helping to develop, lead, and manage the firm’s pro bono work in the U.S. Her practice involves representing children and families, including in juvenile justice and immigration proceedings, and advising parents as they navigate issues that impact their children, such as child support, domestic violence, guardianship, and housing.

“Public service is really a big part of my career and life. I think we’ve seen over the last few months how schools bring our kids together, bring our community together. It has been tough to not have them go to that center of the community every day. And so I am very excited to be able to help make the school district the best it can be for all kids,” Helms says.

When asked what she would advise other families contemplating the move from the city to the suburbs, Helms enthusiastically says, “Just do it! If I had known it was going to be as easy as it’s been, I probably would have made the move a lot earlier.”

CHANGING of the GUARD Lake Forest’s beloved Deer Path Inn welcomes new General Manager, Patrick Lacassagne. words by Ann Marie Scheidler photography by Monica Kass Rogers

W

HEN WORD was shared late last year, that Matt Barba— The Deer Path Inn’s general manager who had led the Inn’s staff through a multi-million dollar renovation as well as the challenges that COVID-19 presented— was leaving the Inn to take a new leadership role at its parent company, it left many wondering—who could fill his shoes?

But on January 1, there was a peaceful transition of power at the Deer Path Inn when Parisian-born Patrick Lacassagne took the reins.

“The Deer Path Inn is a beautiful, magical property,” says the incredibly charming Lacassagne. “I couldn’t believe my eyes that such a place existed outside of the city.”

Lacassagne always knew he wanted to be part of the hospitality world—studying the food and beverage side of the business at the Jean Drouant Hospitality Management School in Paris.

“I actually thought I wanted to become a chef,” he remembers. “But the further I progressed in my studies, the more I was drawn to the hospitality side and the guest experience. I liked that the hotel world could offer me all of this.”

Lacassagne’s hotelier career has taken him all over the world—from Europe to the Middle East to the United States. He has worked for companies like Relais & Chateau, Sofitel, Waldorf Astoria, and Highgate. His most recent assignment was as the acting general manager for the Knickerbocker Hotel in New York City.

“The last big event I helped oversee at the Knickerbocker was our New Year’s Eve party to ring in 2020,” he says. “We were right on Times Square, watching the ball drop. Who knew all that was to come in the new year?”

When the hospitality industry took a devastating blow with the onset of COVID-19, Lacassagne and his fiancée found themselves at a crossroads wondering where they might go next.

“Chicago has always been my favorite city in the USA,” he says, thinking back on his years with Chicago’s Waldorf Astoria that he helped reopen after its renovation. “It’s a mix of Paris, New York City, and Washington D.C. You get the best of all. The busyness of a city center like Manhattan. As clean as Washington D.C. And as wild as Paris.”

Through his network of hotel colleagues, Lacassagne was introduced to Barba, who invited him to come and visit The Deer Path Inn. “The Deer Path Inn is such a unique place,” he says.

“I lived in Chicago for two years and never heard of it. When my car pulled up outside of the inn, I had no idea of what to expect. But the minute I walked in, I felt the warmth. The architecture, design, and atmosphere were also just amazing.

There are no two rooms that are the same. If you go from corridor to corridor, there is always something different. And then to know that a number of the staff—some of the most genuine people I have ever been lucky enough to meet— have been here for 20 or 30 years—there’s nothing like that anywhere else in the world.”

Lacassagne and Barba hit it off quickly, as Barba shared stories of how the inn has evolved since it was renovated, how they have engaged with the community since the shutdown began, and what Lake Forest and the surrounding suburbs mean to the Deer Path.

“Meeting with Matt was such a discovery for me,” Lacassagne adds. “The Deer Path Inn doesn’t need the rest of the world to work. It’s a stand-alone property that is supported by the surrounding community and protected by it.”

Lacassagne was in awe of how the proactive the Deer Path Inn was with its resources in 2020. In his career, he has never seen a hotel’s carryout business as strong as the Deer Path Inn’s was.

“I loved how Matt used Instagram to connect with the

outside world and to talk about our incredible staff,” he says.

At press time, the Deer Path Inn had just surpassed 10,000 followers on the platform. “Instagram is such a powerful tool and Matt was so gifted in how he used it,” says Lacassagne.

“On New Year’s Eve, they posted a photo of a special New Year’s cocktail. I learned on my first day here that from that post, we sold more than 200 of them. Incredible.”

The new innkeeper says it has been advantageous to transition into his role at a time when the hotel and restaurants aren’t at full capacity. It has given him time to take in all that the team has created, understand and know his staff, and up his Instagram game.

But in a world where timing is everything, Lacassagne believes he is absolutely where he is supposed to be, looking forward to building on the strong foundation that was left for him.

“I’m a city person,” he says. “But where I am right now in my life, I like Lake Forest a lot. It’s a diamond near Chicago that needs to be talked about more. Matt’s advice to me before he left was to just be myself, engage with the community, and learn what DPI is all about. the Deer Path Inn is not like any hotel you’ve ever worked for. He was absolutely right.”

D

URING THE difficulties of an ongoing pandemic, we all seek light. We look for things that give us hope and lift our spirits.

One such positive finding has been discovered right in our back yard.

That antidote is nature.

More than ever, the events of the last year have awakened the firsthand discovery of nature’s benefits.

With few options outside of our own homes where we now live, work, learn, and try to keep each other from climbing the walls, our community has taken to our open spaces for the recuperative power of nature.

“The pandemic has highlighted the importance of nature—and the critical role nature plays in individual and community health, resilience and well-being,” expresses Lois Morrison, a member of Lake Forest Open Lands’ Board of Governors.

We have discovered the very thing that science has been pointing to for quite a while—that we need nature. And Lake Forest Open Lands (LFOLA) provides us all with a gateway to nature that is remarkably special. With hundreds of acres of preserved landscapes and miles of trails laced through native prairies, upland woodlands, savannas, lakeshore ravines, and wetlands, LFOLA is a unique community asset for all—a privately-funded conservation organization with over 1,000 members and supporters passionate about nature.

“This is one of the reasons people are moving here

from the city, one of the things that more and more, people appreciate in this community,” explains Real Estate Broker Luke Mutter of Berkshire Hathaway.

“It’s the lungs of the city.”

“Think about it—we have access to nature through six, soon to be eight, public nature preserves,” says Lake Forest Open Lands President John Sentell, nodding to a map of the soon-to-be-opened Jean and John Greene Nature Preserve at McCormick Ravine.

“I hear it all the time, ‘my family is so thankful we can get out and discover these open spaces and wild places right in our backyard.’”

The experts concur—our days get better when we are able to set the sources of stress aside, get outdoors, and immerse ourselves in nature even for short periods of time. Some healthcare providers in North America and Europe have even begun to write nature prescriptions, often called “nature pills,” using common sense and interpretation of published research to motivate patients to take a “nature break” according to an April 2019 Frontiers in Psychology article.

An article in the December issue of ZME Science supports that report, citing that people have also experienced a shift in the way they value nature. During the pandemic, respondents said in nature they cherished a greater sense of mental health and well-being (59 percent), exercise (29 percent), appreciating nature’s beauty (29 percent), sense of identity (23 percent), and spirituality (22 percent), along with other less common values. the stress hormone cortisol, with the duration of the nature experience contributing to the amount of stress reduction.

How do our residents access nature to reduce stress?

Most activities are self-initiated. A leisurely walk, brisk hike, or energetic run at a preserve of their choosing.

During winter, LFOLA grooms cross-country ski trails in the Mellody and Middlefork Farm Nature Preserves. Some regulars meet a friend or bring one, even of the four-legged variety. The changing weather is part of what grounds you, part of what keeps things interesting.

Others engage in activities that are more tailored to a specific interest. Flocks of birders throughout our region find their way to the preserves throughout the year, on the lookout for the hundreds of rare migratory species—some on layovers from as far as South America to the northern territories of Canada. The preserves are also popular with photographers and painters, capturing the natural beauty of what they see.

Lake Forest Open Lands helps to encourage our connection with nature in so many other ways by offering dozens of socially-distanced, guided activities throughout the year. For example, there is a new program called Tuesday on the Trail, an hour-long, educational, guided hike rotating to a different preserve every week. Last month there was a full moon hike in search of owls. There are small, educational socials like Conservation Cocktails held the second Friday evening of every month. And there are major shindigs like Bagpipes & Bonfire, a citywide celebration of fall and family. The re-imagined version last September played out in the parks and schools of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff. It touched the entire community and will again this year. There are dozens of volunteer ac-

tivities dotting the calendar in which all generations assist Lake Forest Open Lands’ restoration team—the caring hands of preservation at work throughout the natural habitat dutifully managed

by LFOLA. The students in our community also have access to unique outdoor learning programs created by Lake Forest Open Lands, working in conjunction with our public and private schools. Education and stewardship opportunities have also been created for hundreds of students in surrounding communities from Wilmette to Waukegan.

“Through its welcoming and inclusive reach beyond the borders of Lake Forest, LFOLA’s Center for Conservation Leadership is making deep and lasting impacts on the next generation of conservation stewards,” says Lois Morrison, a program mentor. “The more people think outside and connect with nature, the more our communities are strengthened and the more we all benefit.”

Perhaps it is a bit ironic that thanks to the dark days of a global pandemic, this community has embraced nature and never been stronger.

“It’s symbiotic,” says Sentell. “We need nature—boy do we need nature. And nature needs us.”

ne of the most frequent requests that I get is for a “Tummy Tuck.” Many patients find that despite diet and exercise they cannot achieve the shaped, toned, flat abdomen they desire.

In assessing a patient for a “Tummy Tuck” multiple factors are taken into account.

1. What is the status of the overlying skin and the degree of laxity? Is the laxity confined to the lower or upper part of the abdomen or both?
