or me, the transition from December to January is like stepping out of a rock concert onto a quiet street—one part of you feels the relief that it’s over and you can go back to life as normal; the other part is so giddy from the excitement that you’re ready to finally sign up for those guitar lessons you meant to take years ago. And yet, that’s the beauty of a new year. After the glorious chaos of December, January arrives with a fresh sense of calm and possibility.

With new beginnings in mind, our January issue of Forest & Bluff offers both tools for rebooting (see The Next Chapter and Wellness), and a host of colorful, mindexpanding events to brighten the gray winter days ahead (see Family Affair, All That Jazz, and F&B Loves).

We start with a big dose of inspiration. In Signed, SEALed…and Determined, retired Navy SEAL Corbin Cornelison talks about his experience in the military and how he’s incorporating what he learned over 22 years into his newest mission, the Optimal Readiness program.

On a related topic, Lake Forest psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo addresses optimizing physical and mental health in this month’s Wellness feature. She gives five actionable steps, the second of which I’m taking to heart—“stop striving for perfection.”

The Next Chapter introduces the first annual Fearless Aging retreat. Dr. Maureen Tart and Professor Kate Jackson will assemble a panel of highly accomplished women from different disciplines to discuss the chal-

Favorite way to stay fit? I enjoy walking outside all year round.

For the last few years, I have done the walk around Lake Geneva, which is 22 miles. It is one of my most favorite days of the year.

ast coast native Jessica White met her husband, Patrick, the first week of college at Xavier University in Cincinnati. “We have been together since we were 18 and he is my partner and my best friend,” says Jessica, who moved to Chicago after graduating and began working as a nurse. “I got accepted into Nurse Anesthetist School and completed my anesthesia residency and master’s from DePaul University. I have worked as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) for 16 years, first in the hospital setting and now in private practice.” It’s a profession she takes pride in, and rightfully so. “It takes a minimum of nine years to become a nurse anesthetist and CRNA’s deliver over 50 percent of the anesthesia in the country,” she explains. “I have been CRNA for 16 years and absolutely love my job and feel lucky to go to work every day. I am with my patients every breath they take, making sure they are anesthetized, pain free, and stable.” At home in Lake Forest with Patrick, 11-year-old daughter Abby, and 10-year-old son Connor, Jessica is also living her best life. “My husband is an avid golfer, my son plays hockey all year round, and my daughter is a social butterfly who is active in lacrosse and swimming,” she says, explaining that the family chose Lake Forest because of its charming downtown and access to the lake. “Spending quality time with my children is something I find so important. My husband is an amazing cook and even with everyone’s hectic schedules we try and eat together at night.” While working such a demanding job and balancing life at home is not always easy, Jessica loves being a working mom. “I feel like I am constantly busy, but it is so rewarding to have a job that helps people every day. I am proud that I am showing my children that you can be both a mom and have a fulfilling career.”

Favorite Chicago escape? The Peninsula hotel.

Favorite thing about Lake Forest? I love that we have such a vibrant downtown where you can shop, eat, and always run into a friend. Favorite sports team? The Chicago Blackhawks are my favorite sports team to watch! My son plays hockey so I feel like I am always watching some kind of Favorite local hockey game. Favorite TV show to binge? Friends. If my husband and I are watching a show restaurant?

I am in a book club with some of my dearest friends and I love that we read best sellers and fine literature so I don’t feel guilty when I read a romance novel. Interior design aesthetic? Our home is 100 years old, and I try to mix the home’s history in the design. I would say farmhouse chic. Favorite thing about being a mom? Watching my children grow into independent people. Since I work full-time, when I am home with Abby and Connor I really try to be present and not multitask. Family dinners are my favorite part of the day. Favorite childhood memory? When I was in middle school, we rented an RV and took a two-week trip out west to “see America,” as my parents would say. There were no iPads or cell phones, so we played games, read books, and ended up having the best time. This year we are trying to recreate this trip for Abby and Connor, minus the RV. I am hoping we have just as good of a time as I did as a little girl. Favorite movie to watch with your kids? Christmas movies! I think over the holiday season we watched Home Alone and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation on repeat. Favorite way to stay fit? I enjoy walking outside all year round. W

hen it comes to divorce, one of the most contentious issues is property division. As the saying goes, “what’s mine is yours and what’s yours is mine,” is not always the case.

In Illinois, marital property is divided equitably between the spouses, which means that each spouse is entitled to a fair share of the marital assets.

However, non-marital property is not Michone J. Riewer subject to division and remains with the spouse who owns it.

Therefore, it’s important to keep your non-marital property separate from marital property to avoid it being converted to marital property.

So, what is the difference between the two? Marital property is any property that is acquired during the marriage, regardless of whose name is on the title or on the bank account. Non-marital property is any property that is acquired before the marriage or acquired during the marriage as a gift or inheritance. It can also include property that is excluded by a valid agreement, such as a prenuptial or postnuptial agreement. There are exceptions.

Here are some tips on how to keep your non-marital property separate from marital property:

Don’t commingle funds: Avoid commingling your non-marital property with marital property. For example, if you inherit money from your parents, don’t deposit it into a joint bank account that you share with your spouse. Instead, deposit it into a separate account that is solely in your name and never put your income (marital) into the account.

Use a prenuptial or postnuptial agreement: A prenuptial or postnuptial agreement can help you protect your non-marital property in case of divorce. These agreements can specify which property is non-marital and how marital property should be divided in the event of a divorce. The agreement can even make income or property that would usually be marital, non-marital.

Keep your non-marital property separate: Keep your non-marital property separate from marital property. For example, if you own a house before the marriage, don’t add your spouse’s name to the title. Instead, keep the title solely in your name.

Be careful with gifts: If you receive a gift during the marriage, it’s important to keep it separate from marital property. For example, if your parents give you a car as a gift, don’t title it jointly with your spouse.

Don’t use non-marital property for marital purposes: If you use your non-marital property for marital purposes, for example, if you use your inheritance to pay for a family vacation, it’s gone, and you will not be reimbursed.

recently came across a bit of goal-setting research out of Ohio State: Just under 10 percent of people who make a New Year’s resolution meet their goal by year end—and a full 43 percent are knocked out before January 31.

New Year’s resolutions may not be the most effective way for athletes to improve their game. But January is a great time to start building the positive habits you need to establish a winning mindset—without a second thought.

This year, instead of making a resolution, I invite you to start, stop, and continue these five mental habits that fuel peak performance: Stop: Comparing yourself to others.

I see athletes fall into the comparison trap every day—and their performance suffers for it. Because when you are constantly looking to the left or right, watching others play their game, your head is not in yours.

Remember, peak performance looks different for every athlete.

Stay focused on what you can control—your own game—and keep your attention on the moment.

Stop: Striving for perfection.

Confession … I used to be an absolute perfectionist, through and through. It hurt my productivity, slowed my growth, and nearly cost me my career. Until it dawned on me—just because you haven’t done it yet doesn’t mean you can’t do it.

That mantra shifted my perspective on performance in a powerful way. Instead of fearing failure—and overthinking every mistake—I decided to move forward, no matter how messy. And I encourage you to do the same.

Somali-style Lamb Shanks with Seasoned Rice words, photography, and recipe by Monica Kass Rogers

O

ne of my boys went to school in Minneapolis where there is a large Somali population. He fell in love with a lamb dish they did at a restaurant there, and we’ve been replicating versions of it at home ever since. From our various renditions, we think this recipe is best. It’s made with lamb shanks slow roasted in a fabulous blend of spices and paired with seasoned rice.

Xawaash, a fragrant potpourri of cinnamon, cumin, coriander, cardamom, black pepper, clove, and turmeric, is a Yemeni spice mix used in most savory Somali dishes. Here, it’s included in the paste used to season the lamb, as well as the rice (called bariis.) I referenced chef Hawa Hasan’s recipe for the Xawaash, which is then combined with vegetable oil, garlic, onion, cilantro, Kashmiri chili, and smoked paprika to make the paste.

You’ll coat the shanks with this, then slow roast them with vegetables for two and a half hours, making the rice during the last half hour of the meat’s cooking time.

Your reward? Falling-off-the-bone tender lamb over spiced, vegetable-flecked rice that perfectly complements the meat. And if you want to go full-on Somali-style, serve platefuls of the finished dish with a perfectly ripe, unpeeled banana next to each place setting. This may seem novel to uninitiated diners, but the banana is to be sliced and eaten between bites of the rice.

SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS FOR THE XAWAASH SPICE BLEND 1, 2-inch piece cinnamon stick • • ½ cup cumin seeds • ½ cup coriander seeds • 2 Tbsp black peppercorns • ½ tsp unshelled cardamom seeds • 1 tsp whole cloves • 2 Tbsp ground turmeric FOR THE LAMB 4 lamb shanks • • 1 medium onion, peeled and chopped • Small bunch cilantro (three or four sprigs) • 6 cloves garlic ¼ cup Xawaash spice blend (in• gredients above; method below) • 1 to 2 tsp Kashmiri chili powder (More if you like hot and spicy; less if you don’t) • 2 tsp smoked paprika 4 Tbsp vegetable oil, divided • • 2 tsp kosher salt • 1 tsp freshly cracked pepper • 3 potatoes, peeled and cut into generous chunks • 3 carrots, peeled and cut into chunks FOR SEASONED RICE • 1 Tbsp vegetable oil • 1 onion, peeled and chopped into small dice, divided • 1-1/2 cups chopped fresh tomato • 3 sprigs cilantro • 1 tsp chicken or beef bouillon paste (I used Better Than Bouillon) OR one bouillon cube 2 cups basmati rice • • 1 Tbsp Xawaash spice blend • ½ tsp ground cardamom • 1 tsp turmeric • 2 small cinnamon sticks, broken into medium pieces • 2 Tbsp raisins for garnish (optional) Minced cilantro, for garnish •

METHOD MAKE THE XAWAASH SPICE BLEND Break the cinnamon stick into small pieces.

(One firm roll-over with a heavy rolling pin works well.) Excluding the turmeric, place the rest of the spices and the broken cinnamon pieces in a heavy skillet over medium heat and stir, toasting for a scant 2 minutes until very fragrant. Remove spices from pan and cool. Grind the spices into a fine powder (I use a coffee grinder.) Check for any remaining unground pieces and grind spices again. Pour into a bowl; add the turmeric. Stir together well and place in a tightly lidded glass jar. You will use about 1/3 cup of the spice mix in this recipe. The rest (a little under a cup) will keep for up to 6 months stored in a cool dark place.

Cover dish with foil. Roast in oven for 2 hours and 15 minutes. Remove foil and roast for another 15 minutes, or a little longer, until meat is falling-of-the-bone tender. During the last half hour of cooking time, make the seasoned rice.

PREPARE THE SEASONED RICE Return heavy skillet to cooktop over medium low heat. Add 1 Tbsp oil and ½ cup of the diced onion. While onion begins to cook, pulse remaining onion with cilantro in food processor. Add this mixture to the onion in the pan along with tomato and bouillon.

Cook, stirring, about 5 minutes until onion and tomatoes are soft but still hold shape.

Remove from heat. Place 2 cups rice with MAKE THE SEASONING PASTE In the bowl of a food processor, add onion, 3 cups water in rice cooker. Stir in tomato/ cilantro and garlic and 1-1/2 Tbsp oil. Pulse onion/cilantro mixture. Stir in Xawaash spice into puree. Place puree in a bowl. Stir in ¼ cup blend, ground cardamom, turmeric, and cinZawaash spice blend, Kashmiri chili powder namon sticks. Cook rice (following rice cooker instructions.) Fluff rice and pick out the and smoked paprika. cinnamon pieces.

PREPARE THE LAMB Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Pour remaining TO SERVE oil into an oven-safe casserole dish. What does it mean to manage one’s wealth? We ask Financial Advisor Karl Lorenz of Lake Forest, Senior Vice President at Morgan Stanley, what drives him to help his clients live their lives to the fullest. edited by Sherry Thomas / photography by Ian McLeod

arl Lorenz (CFP®, CRPC®) has devoted his career to helping individuals and families meet their short and long-term financial goals. He spent 26 years at Merrill Lynch before joining Morgan Stanley in October 2020, bringing decades of professionalism and industry experience. But if you ask any of his Lake Forest neighbors exactly what this Morgan Stanley Senior Vice President does to earn a consistent spot on the Forbes Best-In-State Wealth Advisors List, few might know the answer. He and his wife Jennifer are both active in the North Shore community, but what does it mean to work in wealth management? We were curious to find out and sat down with Lorenz to learn more.

Tell us more about what you do?

Our mission is to help our clients live the best life possible with the financial resources available to them. Our core function is to assist clients with the investment management of their savings.

But that is not done in a vacuum. We prefer to have a “blueprint” for how to invest these funds, so we regularly engage our clients in retirement planning, college planning, loan and liability management, and trust and estate planning strategy discussions. Morgan Stanley has vast capabilities to service clients with a variety of financial needs, and we are the “hub” for all those services.

What does success mean to you?

To me, it’s not always about amassing more and more clients. If

I set our team’s service and performance standards at a certain level, indiscriminately adding new clients inevitably dilutes my team’s ability to really get to know the clients. Like every other relationship, great communication is something that requires investment. It should be nurtured and improved with time. When the clients and I are regularly engaging each other with a shared purpose and from a position of mutual trust, I feel we have forged a successful relationship.

What are the ingredients for successful long term investing?

In the absence of experience, knowledge, and perspective, emotions take over. This is natural and why you routinely see large swings in the market. I believe the lifelong process (and it is a process) of successful investing is comprised of three equally important ingredients: 1. having a clear vison of what you’re looking to accomplish 2. perfecting what you can control and 3. reacting appropriately to what you can’t. My job is to help with all three.

What characteristics as a financial advisor set you apart from others?

Empathy and patience. After so many years working with clients, I have come to the realization that financial markets—and their machinations—are a complete mystery to most people.

While I don’t have a crystal ball, I do have quite a bit of perspective, experience, and the willingness to share those in easy-tounderstand English. This is important because if I invest the time

Finance and empower clients with knowledge, we are much more likely to make wise choices when it matters most.

What would you say is your greatest competitive advantage?

Well, in addition to having highly competent people on my team, I would say my combination of experience and age presents a unique proposition. I would imagine most clients are hoping for longevity in a professional relationship, but also value decades of experience. Sometimes that can be mutually exclusive. I am 53 years old and have been in the business for 30 years. I suppose I would say that’s the best of both worlds.

What should people know if they’re interested in contacting you?

Just call me; I don’t bite. There is never any pressure applied or commitment expected. While I can’t guarantee we’ll have a good fit, I can guarantee I will make every effort to provide value to anyone who takes the time to reach out. If I can’t help you, I will point you in the right direction to someone who can.

And what should people expect on this first call?

Well, I say this with a chuckle, but I call it a “speed-dating call.”

I will generally schedule a 15-minute call to learn about the client’s situation and what they are looking for in an advisory team.

No preparation necessary or document gathering at this point; just an opportunity to see if we have a potential fit. If so, a meeting is our next step.

OON AFTER KNOWING he wanted to serve as a Navy SEAL, Corbin Cornelison watched a documentary about the special operations force and got his hands on a SEALs book at the local bookstore. He also rented the movie Navy SEALs, starring Charlie Sheen, and figured he’d better start getting in tip-top shape, so he grabbed a stopwatch and ran a mile in six minutes flat.

Cornelison was 13.

“I ditched all sports and decided I would concentrate only on ROTC and its military skills team at my high school,” recalls the 42-year-old Cornelison, a native of Huntsville, Alabama, and a 1999 Grissom High School graduate. “I’d asked my father (the late Bobby Cornelison), ‘Who are the toughest warriors in the military?’ Without hesitation, he said, ‘Navy SEALs.’” “From that day forward, I was obsessed with becoming a Navy SEAL. I felt called to be a warrior and to protect those who cannot protect themselves. I was all in, all about being on the front line.

I read the book (SEAL! by Michael Walsh and Greg Walker) and found a couple of Navy SEAL exercise books in our town’s bookstore and took

notes on a notepad. Then I’d dog-ear a page, hide the book behind other books so nobody would buy it, and return the next day to read where I left off and take more notes.”

Cornelison—whose decorated military career spanned 1999 to 2022 and included stops at Okinawa Japan, Camp Lejeune ( Jacksonville, North Carolina) and Naval Station Great Lakes and a combined six tours of duty in Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, and Southeast Asia—is as resolved and laser-focused in the second chapter of his adulthood as he was as an ROTC Cadet Private, an elite Reconnaissance Marine, a Marine Scout Sniper, and a Navy SEAL operator.

A certified trainer, Corrective Exercise specialist, and Performance Enhancement specialist, the mixed-martialarts-fit Cornelison instructs and inspires clients ranging from middle-school students to senior citizens online and at Lake Forest Recreation Center. He’s also affiliated with The Farm System, a Lake Bluff-based sports organization built on helping athletes grow into their full potential on and off the playing fields.

“Mentoring, teaching, and coaching appealed to me when I was a Navy SEAL, and the collective sense of purpose and identity I developed through those opportunities is still a major part of me,” says Cornelison, who had held numerous instructor positions and leadership roles in his military career, including an integral role in the Warrior Toughness Program, a Navy-wide human performance initiative arming enlisted sailors and junior officers with the tools needed to perform their duties and responsibilities under stress.

“As a performance coach, I’ve worked with some wonderful people—people I consider friends. I’m helping folks mitigate stress. I’m helping young athletes reach the next level in their sport. I write a lot of training programs, challenging ones, and what I love to hear is, ‘During the week, there’s nothing I look forward to more than my training sessions with you.’”

Cornelison lives in Bristol, Wisconsin, with his wife, special education teacher and Deerfield High School graduate Stephanie, and their two children: Jax, 14, and Charlotte, 11. The couple got married 19 years ago and lived in Santee, California, for 16 years.

“My family is huge in my life, my No. 1 responsibility; it’s also the main reason I retired,” says Cornelison, who earned an Organized Leadership degree from Charleston University in West Virginia. “My son was an infant when I returned home between tours. I’d just been through a violent combat deployment. Had to be all in over there. But, initially, I wasn’t all in as a new father. My wife told me, ‘I need you to be present for your son when you’re home.’ She was right. What I soon realized was, if I’m the best Navy SEAL but not the best husband and father, that’s failure.

“Fatherhood has been incredibly rewarding,” he adds.

“Seeing my kids develop attributes of a good human being and demonstrate strong character has been such a blessing.”

His unwavering faith has anchored him since he was 17.

“I surrendered my life to Christ a year before I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps,” says Cornelison, who, as a teenager, trained for jungle warfare for 18 months in Okinawa, Japan. “He kept me centered then; He keeps me centered now. My faith is the foundation of my life, and it helped me find balance in life. Each morning I enter a walk-in closet at home and pray and read scripture. Later, I complete a workout regimen and write training content. Mind, body, spirit—I exercise all three, every day.”

“No matter what it is you choose to do in life, your foundation for excellence is built upon the caliber of those three aspects,” he says. “My calling now is to deliver a proven blueprint to help others become the best version of themselves regardless of their current fitness level.”

I’M NOT LEAVING until they ask me to go,” says Lake Forest’s Daniel (Danny) Dolan Jr. of his many roles with Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, most currently as the Vice Chair of its Board of Directors. “This hospital is so unbelievable. So inspirational.

So mind blowing. I can’t imagine not being part of this organization.”

Danny first came to know Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in the early 1990s, when it was called the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC). Danny’s third child—a son named John—experienced a traumatic birth, resulting in his spinal cord being severed. The Dolan family had a connection with Dr. Henry Betts, RIC’s CEO at the time, and

Danny called Dr. Betts regarding John.

“From the beginning, I knew this hospital was extraordinary,” Danny recalls. “I was asked to join its Associate Board and have been involved with them ever since.”

In the early years of his involvement, Danny launched the John Dolan Golf Challenge, in memory of his late son, to raise money for the hospital’s pediatric rehabilitation programs. “We hosted this event at the Merit Club for more than 20 years and introduced a number of people who are now significant donors to the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab,” Danny says.

Danny’s other children—he and his wife Mary had six in total—have been included in their father’s philanthropic work for as long as they can remember.

“Since Dad introduced the John Dolan Golf challenge, Shirley Ryan AbilityLab has been a big part of our lives,” says daughter Genevieve, an AsCaption sociate Board member. “Dad would have us speak at the event and when we could finally golf, we joined the outing. We would be paired with ‘pros’ who could be missing an arm or playing from a wheelchair and they would be better than us. It was really humbling experience and opened my eyes to the beauty of the hospital.”

Genevieve’s younger sister Caroline was born after her brother passed but feels connected to him through her work on the Associate Board.

“My introduction to the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab was also through the golf challenge,” Caroline

says. “We would go to the event every year and be so inspired by the pro who would participate year after year. I was so moved to see how they played, knowing that they didn’t have everything we did.”

Genevieve and Caroline have continued their family’s legacy of giving by chairing the annual Art in Motion event— Genevieve in 2021 and Caroline in 2024. Art in Motion raises funds for Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s Art Therapy and Therapeutic Recreation programs.

“Art in Motion is being held on Friday, February 16, at Wildman BT. It’s the third year that it’s being hosted there,” Caroline says. “Wildman BT is very artsy—a big, open, raw warehouse. It’s a super location and many of the artists will come and hang out near their work. It’s an incredibly special night. And the money we raise is so important because this programming is often not covered by insurance.” The 2024 planning committee’s goal is to raise $570,000.

The Art Therapy program at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is based on the belief that the creative process facilitates mind-

body connection and assists patients in exploring intense emotions accompanying the rehabilitation process. It encourages self-expression, reduces stress and anxiety, and promotes healing and self-awareness.

Individual and group art therapy sessions focus on building resiliency through the promotion of self-esteem and functional independence. Patients explore new possibilities to approach their lives and discover strengths through adaptation of art materials. They are able to engage in art with the highest level of independence and find freedom in the artistic process.

At Art in Motion, emerging artists and hospital, civic, and business leaders enjoy a lively cocktail party with music, raffle, refreshments, and patient artwork on display. Artwork is created by patients of varying abilities and is for sale via silent auction; half of the sale proceeds go to the artists while half go to Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. “When you purchase a piece of art at Art in Motion, there is a deeper meaning, something so special, to what you’re buying,” says Genevieve. “The artwork often speaks to a patient’s journey. It’s very sentimental, very emotional, and it beautifully showcases the magic of this hospital.”

The pride Danny feels for his daughters continuing his family’s work with Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is hard to miss.

“Genevieve and Caroline have so eloquently expressed what makes this hospital so outstanding and I’m so proud of the work they’re doing with Art in Motion,” Danny says.

“Every day, Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is disrupting how medicine is delivered. The outcomes are outstanding—transformational. The research being done, and the medicine being practiced is what is giving patients and their families hope. Our leadership team has created this culture, and they won’t settle for anything less. You can feel this passion come through in the art.”

Gorton Center kicks off its 50th anniversary year with one of the most robust lineups in its history, including a special performance by the legendary Giordano Dance Chicago on February 10. words by Sherry Thomas photography by Todd Rosenberg

T

HE YEAR IS 1974. Happy Days makes its debut on ABC. Watergate is erupting in Washington, D.C. And Barbara Streisand’s “The Way We Were” is burning up the airwaves.

Meanwhile on the North Shore, Lake Forest residents are celebrating an exciting new place for the community to connect and in Evanston, a burgeoning American jazz dance company is invited to tour with the Bolshoi Ballet in the Soviet Union.

That place was Gorton Center and that worldclass troupe was Giordano Dance Company (GDC)—which will make its Gorton premier February 10 as part of an elevated anniversary lineup.

Ann Wildman, Gorton’s Director of Special Events, says this year’s schedule is promising to be the most robust in the center’s 50-year history.

Giordano Dance Company will be the first professional dance company to perform at Gorton but it certainly won’t be the last.

The pairing is meaningful for both organizations.

Giordano Dance Chicago originated at the late Gus Giordano’s family-run studio in Evanston in 1963. Known as the godfather of jazz in dance, the company that Giordano founded is today regarded as American’s original jazz dance company. Now located in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood, Giordano Dance Chicago has performed worldwide in more than 1,300 cities.

Wildman is thrilled to add Lake Forest to that list, especially as GDC emerges from its 60th anniversary year with new works that continue expand the boundaries of jazz and contemporary dance.

continue with performances of “Sneaky Pete” (a film noirstyled piece by by Brock Clawson); “All For You” (a pas de deux choreographed by GDC dancer Adam Houston and originally created for the “Giordano on Giordano” collective); and the rousing “SOUL” (by So You Think You Can Dance choreographer Ray Leeper, featuring music by Gladys Knight and the Pips, Al Green, and Tina Turner).

The February 10 performance runs from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. with a special “meet and greet” champagne and dessert reception to follow (tickets will be sold separately for this part of the event). Those who opt for the afterperformance event will have the opportunity to personally meet Gus Giordano’s daughter, Nan Giordano (who now runs GDC) along with the dancers.

Wildman says that in addition to hosting GDC for the first time, Gorton Center has many other unique offerings to come in the anniversary year ahead—all leading up to a weekend-long, community-wide Birthday Bash September 14 to 15, sponsored by Lake Forest Bank & Trust.

ATE JACKSON, A LECTURER ON ENTREPRENEURSHIP and innovation at Lake Forest College, was speaking to a room filled with students when she found herself grasping for a word.

“It was so unsettling when I couldn’t come up with the word I was looking for,” Jackson says. So, she sent off a quick text to her friend, Dr. Maureen Tart, a partner at OB/Gyne Associates of Lake Forest.

“Maureen was so reassuring, but she mentioned that this ‘brain fog’ I was having may be a symptom of menopause,” says Jackson, explaining that a light bulb went off that if she had questions about midlife, other women must, too. “I’m lucky to have a good friend who happens to be a doctor. But what do you do if you don’t?”

Jackson and Tart decided to partner on a women’s retreat themed “Fearless Aging,” which will be held on Friday, January 19 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Knollwood Country Club.

“When I was in medical school, I received very little training on medicine specific to women in mid-life,” Tart says.

“When I moved to Lake Forest after practicing medicine in the city, I realized I was going to have a whole new clientele.

I took some continuing education classes and became a certified menopause practitioner. While all medicine is personal and unique to the patient, the amount of changes a woman can go through at midlife is very unique to each woman.

There’s no one plan or program that can speak to all women.”

Tart loves to talk with her patients about menopause but realizes she only sees most of these patients once or twice a year.

“Women want to talk about what they’re experiencing, and

they need to be heard. I want to make them aware of the resources available to them outside of my office,” Tart says.

Titled Fearless Aging, the retreat is a first step in providing women with a mid-life toolbox. This one-day event will offer women the chance to learn more about menopause, as well as other topics that impact midlife like finances and mindset.

“We’ve mindfully brought together a group of local experts who are at the same stage of life,” Jackson says. “We want to help women step into their power by bringing all of the pieces together—the health, the wealth, and living your best life.”

In addition to Jackson and Tart, the retreat’s speaker panel includes Dr. Shayna Mancuso, D.O., FACOG; Jill Foos, Jill Foos Wellness; Dianne Banta, yoga and meditation instructor; Heather O’Neill Fairbanks, CFP, ChFC, Partner and Managing Director for Beacon Pointe Advisors; Jane Ott, President of North South Capital; and Tori O’Neill Shadaia, Senior Associate Wealth Manager, Beacon Pointe Advisors.

Additionally, Lake Forest Book Store will be on hand with some relevant books for purchase.

“We appreciate that women are giving their time to come to this event, and we want it to be a very elevated experience,” Jackson says. “It’s a day dedicated to women coming together in community and learning of the resources available to them at this stage in life.”

Tart agrees. “We’ve been very intentional in selecting our panelists. It’s not about selling products. It’s about helping women make informed decisions. We all want to age well and look forward to what’s next.”

The Last Word

Return To Sender Letters written more than six decades ago capture a year in the life of a young woman whose world travels left her forever changed. Romayne Kazmer speaks to us about the memoir she wrote based on those experiences. words by Sherry Thomas illustration by Tom Bachtell

T

he first letter was written on stationery from the Holland-America Line, envelope emblazoned in royal blue—VIA AIR MAIL. It was a Tuesday—September 15, 1959, to be exact—and a 20-year-old Romayne Troost (a sophomore at University of Colorado) was letting her parents (Peter and Romaine) know she made it aboard with all her belongings as she prepared to sail across the Atlantic on a study abroad program in Switzerland and Norway. It was the first of many lengthy notes the intrepid young traveler would send back to the U.S. through August 8, 1960, each missive time-stamped and postmarked from the city where she found herself. She wrote of getting a “wash and style” in Paris for $1.15, the thrill of an Amsterdam canal ride, turning 21 in Monte Carlo, and the Mercedes factory she “hunted down” in Munich for her father (who was keen to get one shipped directly back to the states). They were moments in time that left an indelible mark on the sender, (now Romayne Kazmer) but she admits she didn’t think much about those letters until her father died in 1970. Little did she realize he’d been saving them all these years, locked tight in a safe deposit box—like a time capsule. “I was very surprised ... and touched. I didn’t think it would be his nature to cherish these,” says Kazmer, who with the support of Ragdale and others in the Lake Forest community, published the letters as a memoir, Letters That Moved My Father, in 2020. At first, when she sat down to transcribe the letters into a manuscript, she says it was almost too real. “I see in them this young person ... I don’t talk like that anymore,” she explains. Her adventures are well-outlined in explicit detail, from the German drinking songs she’d belt out at bars with fellow students to the friend from Iran whose father flew her and friends to stay in their Tehran villa on a six-week tour of the Middle East.

“It really did change my life forever,” says Kazmer, who to date, has visited every continent and more than 140 countries, even starting a business as a travel consultant. She hopes her memoir will inspire others to step outside their comfort zone and open their minds to the world outside of the U.S.—“I’d like for them to look beyond the leaders that run these countries, because the people underneath are wonderful.” While Kazmer and husband, Ted, now live in Bannockburn, she has deep ties to Lake Forest (she was past president of Lake Forest Woman’s Club and is a member of countless other organizations). The book’s acknowledgements read like a local “who’s who,” with Adrian Smith, Ragdale, and others in the community thanked for their support. But perhaps the most magical thing about Letters That Moved My Father is that Kazmer has inadvertently created a portal through time for her readers, one that effectively captures the innocence of the age and the author. “Last night we took a night boat ride for two hours down Le Seine River. Beautiful!” she wrote on September 30, 1959. “Tomorrow night we are going to a place where they dance in the cellars. Don’t worry I’m careful.”
