With it comes new beginnings, the birth of new blossoms, the promise of warmer days and a lot more sunshine! Alas, we begin April and the world’s natural beauty begins to blossom again.

The board will also be hosting, for the first time, a companion event for kids, Cattails & Kiddies, on the afternoon of April 9.

“We are trying to involve the kids more this year. We do a lot of kids programming and this will introduce them to philanthropy,” Magliochelli says. “It’s a one-day event where they’ll be doing outdoor activities and doing some crafts and creating art pieces for the main event.”

Both Taubensee and Magliochetti have children who regularly take part in LFOLA programs and activities, and they say their kids are what motivates them to volunteer their time to the organization.

“It’s great to get out and walk around and my kids love to go explore the trails and the different prairies,” Magliochett says.“ It’s just a great family place.”

“Last year for sure was interesting for Open Lands, being open to the public and staying open during the pandemic. The community really utilized it,” says Taubensee.

“It’s a great place to get your kids outside for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing on the trails. We moved up here three years ago from the city and one of the draws to Lake Forest was all of the open lands.”

The Cattails & Cocktails event offers many opportunities for community residents to show their support for LFOLA. Sponsorships of various aspects of the event are available, including, among others, the “Love Potions” Bar, “Sneak a Peek” Tasting, and a “Welcome to Fairyland” Tent and Drink. Individual tickets are available for a donation of $100 for members of the association and $125 for non-members.

Cattails & Cocktails is one of a number of events throughout the year that LFOLA utilizes to raise funds to carry out its mission, which is to preserve, restore, and protect open lands in Lake Forest and the surrounding area.

“Lake Forest Open Lands Association has been a leader among land trusts both locally and nationally,” Taubensee says. “We all enjoy having it on our doorstep and want to help continue its work preserving the remarkable open spaces in our communities.”

A

YEAR AGO, my son did something dumb.

In public. A rightfully concerned mom posted about The Dumb Thing on Facebook.

My son is the youngest of four. He is not my first rodeo. It is my experience that the brain of a second-semester high school senior resembles a Chia Pet more than an actual human brain. Apply a mixture of warm weather, sunshine, and a fast-approaching graduation date to a teenager’s Chia Pet brain and you’ve created ideal growing conditions for Dumb Ideas. In a flash, 10,000 Dumb Ideas can sprout in a high schooler’s Chia Pet brain.

The offender described in the Facebook post did not fit my son’s description, but The Dumb Thing had the hallmarks of my son’s personal brand of dumb: loud, boisterous, social. I asked him if he was involved. Of course, he was. We talked about why The Dumb Thing was dumb. No one was hurt.

Nothing was damaged. But it was dumb. He owned his actions. Consequences were dealt. The Dumb Thing was handled. We moved on.

But Facebook did not move on. Oh no. Facebook exploded.

The Dumb Thing triggered comments and opinions that splintered like a broken windshield. By early evening, you would have thought the end of civilization was nigh. I poured a glass of wine, read comments, chomped on popcorn, and exchanged phone calls with friends who squealed as more and more scathing judgments poured in. Eventually, the admin of the page turned off commenting. Everyone had seemingly different opinions, but most people agreed on three things: 1.

The mother of the boy must be one of those checked-out, permissive, manner-loathing types. 2. Entitlement causes people to vote for the wrong political candidate. And 3. Parents should skillfully extract free will from their child’s innards to ensure kids never make the occasional poor choice. Poor choices lead to (gasp) public embarrassment.

All I could think was, ‘Wow. Y’all would vote me out of The Bubble if you knew what I got up to my second-semester senior year.’ I had a strong moral compass and still, my Chia Pet brain had me running around committing all variety of Dumb Things. A bunch of us were televised on WGN sipping adult beverages in the bleachers of Wrigley Field when we should have been in math class. Our principal did not ridicule my mother. He did not fear for our country’s future. He simply warmed up our seats in detention.

I know very successful people who did Dumb Things.

Like, staggeringly Dumb Things. Your investment banker did Dumb Things. So did your CEO neighbor. Your surgeon did, too. I know this because I was probably with them when they did Dumb Things and/or they are human. Either way, sometimes life’s most powerful lessons are learned from doing and paying the price for Dumb Things.

Another mom was recently dragged across the unforgiving virtual terrain of Facebook. Her son did A Dumb Thing.

Were we all absent that day in kindergarten when the teacher taught empathy? Did we sleep through the sermon on compassion? Are we so desperate to appear perfect we can’t admit that parenting often-annoying, mini-versions of our imperfect selves is sometimes the hardest, loneliest, and most soul-crushing work we will ever know? Surely shaming one another can’t be the answer to the conundrum of being human, can it? We are all doing the best we can. So are our goofy, Chia Pet-brained kids.

Keyboard cruelty is A Dumb Thing; kindness is cool. Our community shines when we ditch perfection and pull together. So do our kids.

A 2017 Illinois statute changed child support calculations and could decrease payments despite an increase in the payor’s salary.

T

HERE HAS BEEN a substantial change in child support. The change affects both the payor and the recipient, and of course, the children. Some people who are requesting the court increase child support due to a change in circumstances are finding support is reduced instead. These reductions can be traced to a 2017 change in Illinois’ child support statute. The new statute’s effect was initially unclear.

Almost five years later, it has become evident that in higher-wageearning families, child support has been reduced for the recipient.

In most cases, the reduction is drastic.

Illinois previously calculated child support as a percentage of the payor’s net income. Net income was calculated as gross income less only federal, state, Social Security, and Medicare taxes. The payor paid 20 percent of his net income as child support for one child, 28 percent for two children, 32 percent for three children, and so on. If the payor made $200,000 per year ($16,667 per month) and the recipient made $100,000 per year ($8,333 per month) and the parties have three children, then under the old statute the payor’s child support obligation was approximately $3,750 per month. This calculation was based on the payor’s net income of $11,705 per month times 32 percent.

The new statute requires the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (“HFS”) to adopt rules establishing child support guidelines and a schedule of basic child support obligations that reflect the amount of combined net income that parents living in the same household in Illinois ordinarily spend on their children.

Included in the new calculation are the number of children, both parents’ incomes, and the number of overnights each parent has with the children in a year. This information is entered into a formula that no longer uses the standard percentages. The amount of child support for a family who lives in Lake Forest, Winnetka, or Barrington is the same as that for a family who lives in southern Illinois.

Under the new statute using the above example, if the payor has at least 40 percent of the overnights with the children, (146 or more nights out of 365) the new child support paid to the recipient would be $1,287 per month. If the payor has less than 40 percent of the overnights, the child support amount would be $2,304 per month.

Either amount is drastically less than $3,750, the original amount calculated under the pre-2017 statute.

One would assume there must be a point at which the payor has to pay more child support than they paid under the pre-2017 statute.

However, even a large raise for the payor does not get the recipient back to the pre-statute amount. What occurs if the payor receives a 250 percent raise and begins making $500,000 while the recipient continues to make $100,000? Under the new statute, if the payor has at least 40 percent of the overnights with the children, the new child support amount would be $2,276 per month. If the payor has less than 40 percent of the overnights, the child support amount would be $3,046 per month. Again, either amount is drastically less than the original $3,750.

The recipient who has been receiving child support under the old calculation will find it difficult to adjust their budget if a court finds there has been a substantial change and applies the new statute. Most people would anticipate that child support would not be reduced due to the payor receiving a raise. In Illinois, however, if a court finds that there has been a substantial change in circumstances, like a change in income, the court will apply the new statute even if the result is nonsensical.

Our child support system is gathering input as the state prepares for its regular review of the guidelines. The Illinois Child Support Advisory Committee and HFS are sponsoring a series of virtual town hall meetings to gather information from the public relative to the quadrennial review of the Illinois child support guidelines. These meetings will be held on Wednesday evenings through June. The QR code below has a link to the website where parties can register.

Community involvement is essential to good governmental practices and policies. Obtaining community input through greater attendance and participation at the meetings will lead to more meaningful conversations as the state conducts its review.

The best way to collect information about the new statute is to meet with an attorney who specializes in family law and is familiar with child support. The attorney can answer questions and help with calculations and strategies that will help you make the best decision.

S A SENIOR SPECIALIST and the Director of Hindman’s sales of European Decorative Arts, the category of collecting that includes furniture, sculpture, carpets, ceramics, mirrors, and more, I am often asked what’s “in” and what’s “out.” My colleagues and I advise our clients on acquiring for their collections, how to furnish a historic or a brand-new home, and how our firm can help them with transitions in their lives.

Regrettably, the word “collecting” has a public relations problem.

People today are turned off by the concepts of collections and clutter … yet people are collecting. They do it on Instagram—collecting images, collecting ideas, collecting digital art, collecting people. Our job is to teach this new audience how easily the hoarder’s instinct (it is inside all of us) can be applied with great pleasure to physical objects. You might think “I am not interested in antiques,” but historic objects absolutely belong in contemporary rooms. Incorporating something with the patina of age adds personality and character; a single rare object casts its glow across everything else in a room. I would advise you should never hire a designer who only buys from manufacturers’ showrooms.

Historic design and decorative arts are as cherished now as they were in our grandparents’ day—what has changed is the way we use them in our homes. It is out of fashion to fill a house with collections and formal furniture; many people will buy two or three very good things, the best of the best, and juxtapose them against more inviting furniture in open rooms. If you bring home a 1740s gilded Rococo mirror with opulent details, give it room to breathe. It needs a stark white wall or an uncrowded room to show itself off.

Auctions bring modern and historic designs from all over the world to one’s doorstep, at a range of price points from entry-level to major commitment. It is possible to own near-museum-worthy examples of the finest furniture ever made, often for less than the cost of something from the Merchandise Mart and without waiting fourteen months in this supply chain-challenged climate. However, you should not expect instant gratification. Dynamic rooms with meaningful works of art take years to build; the process cannot be rushed.

There is a strategy to buying at auction, and the advice is the same whether you are spending $1,000 on your first chair or $100,000 on a major work of art. Do all your research and decide how much you want to spend before the auction begins. Bidding moves at light speed; only with preparation are you guaranteed to get what you want at a comfortable price. Be aware of the premium, a commission you pay to the auction house on top of the hammer price. Get a second opinion before making a big purchase. Seek the knowledge of an art adviser or a trusted and impartial dealer, who can protect you from paying too much, buying something fake, or otherwise making a mistake. Be aware that items may need “freshening” before they are ready to bring home. You or your designer should have preferred upholsterers, refinishers, framers, and restorers. Lastly, do not approach the auction looking for something. Have an open mind and let yourself be moved by something new. Experienced collectors do not look for anything specific, rather they say, “show me what you think is the best.” They are looking for beautiful objects made from costly or exotic materials, fine workmanship, or sometimes just a better version of something they already own.

Above all, have fun. Collecting is an encyclopedic experience that brings a lifetime of enjoyment. Find a friend or a partner who likes to learn, and you will never be bored.

SPUDNUT DONUT HOLES

AY, “HELLO,” to our spudnuts! These little potato-donut morsels are descendants of the German fastnacht fritter.

Putting mashed potatoes in doughnut batter may sound weird, but potatoes add moisture to the dough, yielding a soft and tender donut that doesn’t taste potato-ey at all. Salt Lake City entrepreneur Bob Pelton learned about potato donuts while a Navy cook in 1930s Europe. When back in the U.S., he dubbed his version of the lightly sweet treat “spudnuts,”and sold

the heck out of them through his Spudnut Shop stores well into the ‘60s. Eventually eclipsed by Dunkin Donuts and other brands, Pelton’s potato-donut empire is no more.

But spudnuts live on! While you can fry them in the traditional donut shape, we like doing them as doughnut holes--1 ½-inch rounds that puff into perfect little balls in the fryer. Shake them in a bag with cinnamon sugar, or doll them up with our salted-caramel glaze, or lemon curd filling. This recipe yields more than four dozen, so you’ll have plenty to share.

INGREDIENTS: For the spudnuts: • 2 packages active dry yeast • 1/2 cup tepid water (110° F) • 3/4 cup pure cane sugar • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed • 3/4 cup softened unsalted butter • 1 large or 2 small Idaho potatoes, peeled, chopped and boiled to make 1 1/2 cups mashed • 3 eggs • 2 cups milk, scalded, and cooled to lukewarm • 1 1/2 tsp salt • Zest from 1 fresh lemon, finely grated

• 6-8 cups flour, sifted (You’ll use just enough to make a soft dough) For the salted caramel: • 1 cup sugar • 1 cup heavy cream • 1 teaspoon salt For the lemon version: • 1 cup sugar • Finely grated zest from 2 fresh lemons • 1 jar good-quality lemon curd

DIRECTIONS: Make salted caramel: In a small pan over medium heat, melt sugar, stirring constantly until golden brown. In a separate pan, bring cream to simmer. Slowly pour cream into sugar until combined. Cool to room temperature. Reserve.

Carefully cut spudnuts with a well-floured 1 ½-inch cutter, pushing straight down and avoiding twisting the cutter (this will give the finished spudnuts a more perfect shape.) Add flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing after each addition.

Once you have added six cups of the flour, remove mixer bowl and turn the dough out onto a heavily floured work surface. Knead and fold dough, sprinkling on more flour as you go until the dough is soft, smooth and doesn’t stick to the work surface.

SERVE: To serve salted caramel version: Place caramel in a dipping bowl and serve alongside spudnuts for dipping, or mound spudnuts on a serving plate and pour caramel over.

Place dough in a greased bowl; cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk; about 40 minutes.

To serve lemon version: Fill a pastry bag fitted with metal tip with lemon curd. Poke tip into the side of each spudnut and fill with a bit of lemon curd. Roll filled Line several sheet pans with parchment paper. Cut spudnuts in sugar you have mixed with lemon zest.

A love of travel has often taken Lake Bluff ’s Annie Pezza on adventures around the world. She now has an idea to help you do the same. words by Ann Marie Scheidler photography by Robin Subar hair and makeup by Leanna Ernest

A

S A YOUNG executive in pharmaceutical sales in the early 2000s, Annie Pezza learned that the most successful products always solved a problem.

“Growing up, I moved around a lot,” says Pezza of splitting time with her parents between Missouri and Colorado. “I think this taught me to adapt and be flexible wherever I was and be more go with the flow. But it also made me a little restless if I was ever in one place for too long.”

Pezza discovered that travel often always the answer when was feeling the need to change things up.

“I figured out that I absolutely love going somewhere and experiencing something new, but even more than that I love how travel makes home feel,” she says. “It’s so comforting to come home from a trip. You have these amazing experiences with your family—time away that brings you all closer—and you come home and you just feel that happiness. A great trip doesn’t have to be extravagant to make this happen.”

But it does have to be well planned, especially when you have a husband and three children in tow.

“When you’re going to spend time and money on something like a vacation, you don’t want to make any big mistakes,” Pezza explains. “But the way most of us make travel plans is by reaching out to friends of friends, or engaging in scattered searches on the internet—never feeling quite sure of what we’re signing up for.”

What Pezza longed for was a credible source for travel information, where like-minded people shared their itineraries from destinations she was interested in.

“You know, a lot of times you go on these travel sites and you’ll see what seems to be model sitting at a table saying that this is the hotel you should stay at, or this is a restaurant you should go to,” she says. “I have three kids. I want to see where families go and what they do.

If I’m planning a trip to Yellowstone, I want to know where I should fly into, if I should stay in the park, how long should I plan to stay there, and if it’s possible to see Lake Tahoe on the same trip. I know that someone else has taken this trip and my hope is that they will share their authentic experiences on MyPinerary so that I can

Pezza’s solution has been to create a digital hub for people to share their authentic travel experiences—named MyPinerary (sounds like itinerary)—where people can login and discover, create, and share itineraries.

“I think in this post-pandemic world, people are eager to get out and travel again and share their experiences,” she adds. “I’ve built a place where they can tell others what they did, what they liked and what they didn’t, and what they might do differently if given the chance. My dream is that MyPinerary will be the Spotify of travel.

I’m hoping that people will discover travel itineraries that they can run with as is, or see pieces from different ones that they can make into their own, knowing they can trust the recommendations they’re receiving.”

While travel will be the primary focus of MyPinerary, there will also be a component of environmental stewardship—a passion that is dear to Pezza.

“The world has really healed over the last couple of years with the pandemic reducing the extent of our carbon footprint by keeping us all home,” Pezza says.

“As much as I love travel, I care about the environment more. And often times, the very nature of travel industry works against this. But there are so many parts of the world that depend on tourism, that I firmly I believe that there is a way to travel the globe and take care of it, too.”

Pezza’s secondary goal with MyPinerary is to educate travelers about being eco-friendly.

“If you register your email with MyPinerary, you’ll l receive a free e-book I’ve written with the five simple ways to become an eco-friendly traveler,” she says. “My goal isn’t to hit people over the head with this information, but simply to make it available. My feeling is that if we educate people and put this information out there, they can then be part of the solution. I really believe that the MyPinerary community will want this.”

Keating and Cahill have joined forces, each bringing her own area of passion and expertise—Keating in real estate and Cahill in art. Unlike real estate transactions from years past, they want to remain in touch and be a part of your journey even after the final papers are signed.

Keating and her family moved to Lake Forest recently and they couldn’t be more excited to officially become part of the community.

There are so many things Keating loves about her new hometown, but top of the list are the schools. “My daughter is a pre-schooler at Sheridan and my son is in kindergarten at Everett. The community has been really welcoming. I feel like we moved in and just immediately clicked with everybody.”

Keating says she and her husband are pleased that most of the warnings they received from well-meaning friends about the transition from city to suburbs never came to fruition.

“They said they didn’t want us to be shocked. They warned up that when you moved to the suburbs, you’re not going to have those restaurants around the block. You’re not going to have your friends easily accessible. You’re going to have to plan everything.

“So we were a little worried and then we moved.” As it turns out, Keating and her family could not be happier. “We loved our life in the city. But we are very happy here. I feel like moving to the suburbs, everything is just very accessible, very easy, and I kind of feel like we find ourselves being able to spend more time at home because we have the space and we have the yard that we never had.”

As part of the well-known Mabadi Group and having just gone through the process herself, Keating is armed and ready with the most current and up-to-date information available to assist other young families make that same transition.

As Cahill notes, realtors on the North Shore do much more than sell homes. “They also become a great resource for their clients, not only in terms of selling their house, but also everything that comes after. Who do we go to for a contractor?

Who do we go to for interior design or art? I know that that’s an area that realtors want to expand and so I can reach out to them and help them to help their clients and provide an additional resource for them.”

Much of Cahill’s business includes clients who have moved up from a condo in the city to a larger home in the suburbs.

“Some are empty nesters who have engaged in new construction homes. They have these walls that they need to fill.”

In addition, Cahill’s business also involves helping clients take their current collection and figure out how to make it work in their new space. She helps many clients with what she terms an “art refresh,” basically helping them keep the art they love.

Cahill began her art consultantion business, Art en Object, about six years ago. “It’s not my background in terms of education, but what I did professionally before starting Art en Object definitely helps in this art consultant role.” Cahill has a PhD in statistics and was the director of research for a foundation. “I spent a lot of time setting up research studies and doing focus groups and trying to understand and assess where people are coming from.” This invaluable experience comes into play now as Cahill interacts with clients. “I think I can get a really good read off them. I have a strong track record in terms of succeeding in finding them art that really resonates and really connecting them with art and the artists who make it.

“We moved into a large Victorian with lots of walls to fill 16 years ago, when my four kids were all under the age of four. I was home a lot more and I started nesting. We started this typical process, like many young families who buy their forever house and they start filling it. And one thing I started doing was acquiring artwork for the walls of this house, and I got to know the artists. And friends would come in and say, ‘where did you find that?’

“I have a friend who’s an interior designer and she reached out and said, ‘I have this project. Please help me with the artwork.’ And that was kind of the jumping-off point and I said, sure. I loved it. I loved the whole thing. And so I started doing it more formally and turned it into a business. Art is one of the few things that you have in your home that is a true reflection of who you are.”

She views her role partly as “educating her clients, but in a very gentle way. And giving them options—but not too many.” She focuses on local and emerging mid-career artists who are not represented, many of whom her clients would probably never come across if not for her.

It seems natural that Keating and Cahill have found each other. Keating says that within her realty group, “We don’t just help people find their perfect home or sell their home.

It’s more about staging the home if we’re helping them sell it and when they purchase from us, it’s not just like, oh congratulations, see you later. It’s very much keeping in contact and they’re reaching out all the time saying ‘Hey, do you have a painter that you love? Do you have a contractor that you can refer along? A handyman?’

Keating notes that once families move into what feels like their forever home, they are then ready to begin investing in art at a different level than when they were living in a condo in the city. “As a real estate agent, I’m able to say, ‘oh my gosh.

I have an amazing woman.’ I know Shannon is going to come in and be able to bring all of these different art pieces for them to choose from. And just knowing that she’s going to get to know their personalities and pick out the perfect piece that they’re going to love for years and years down the road. I know that she’s definitely someone that’s in my portfolio of people that I feel 100 percent confident passing along to my clients and I know that they’re going to be super happy when they’re looking to invest in art.”

T

HE ANNUAL Baby Alumni Party for infants born at Lake Forest Hospital drew 50 attendees in its first year, 1948, two years after the hospital’s Women’s Board—the event’s host—was born.

More than 2,000 people who had been a part of a blessed event at the hospital showed up at the annual bash in 1997. Parents/former maternity class students mingled and caught up across the lawns of the hospital’s campus. Children rode ponies and cavorted in ball pits.

The Women’s Board—now known as the Women’s Board of Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital (NLFH)—plans to throw another celebration on May 7, but don’t expect to see a sea of bibs and pacifiers. Or face-paint stations. Or Whee!-inducing rides.

The Women’s Board will commemorate its 75th anniversary with a gala (cocktail attire) at Onwentsia Club in Lake Forest. The vital group’s 2022 benefit is billed as a “Journey Through Time” celebration of the Board’s past, present, and future, featuring cocktails (6 p.m.), dinner (7:30 p.m.), a live auction, a raffle, a paddle raise, and music by High Society Orchestra.

“It will be a spectacular event, honoring the rich history and numerous accomplishments of the Women’s Board, which has always been a strong group of women committed to the hospital and community,” says Andra O’Neill, a gala co-chair with Lisa Abdula and Rachel Baker. “We give back.

“We make a difference.”

And how. The Women’s Board raised $4 million earmarked for the expansion of Lake Forest Hospital in 2018. It has pledged $1 million for the soon-to-becompleted, 14,000-square-foot Simulation and Education Center at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital; the aim is to generate a substantial portion of that pledge at this year’s gala for a state-of-the-art center that will provide an innovative, educational environment for healthcare professionals at all levels, including hospital staff members, nursing students, first responders, and community partners.

“It is impressive to think that for the last 75 years the women of our community have given so much time

and effort and financial support to the hospital,” says Women’s Board sustaining member Maddie Dugan, whose mother, Helen Dick Bronson, joined the Women’s Board in 1946 and later served as its president for three years.

“Lake Forest Hospital is a better place for our friends and neighbors because of the Women’s Board’s support,” adds the woman who chaired the Baby Alumni Party, the Holiday Boutique, the Hospital Benefit (twice), and serves on the Grants and Scholarship committees. “Our grants program is the vehicle through which we can support operations in the hospital that are not covered by the hospital’s operating budget.”

The Women’s Board has awarded more than 1,000 healthcare scholarships since its inception.

members—is to support the hospital through fundraising, volunteerism, education, and advocacy. Its activities seek to enhance the facilities and services of the hospital, helping to ensure that the highest quality of healthcare is available.

Lake Forest’s very first hospital was named after a woman. Alice Home, a cottage hospital that stood on the campus of Lake Forest College, opened in 1899. A donation from Annie Durand funded the construction of the building; Durand then named it after her late sister, Alice Bursdal Burhans.

Eight women, including founder and first president Marion “Mimi” Warner Hodgkins, gathered in Lake Forest to hold the first Women’s Board meeting on June 27, 1946. A consummate leader described as a “woman ahead of her time” in a Chicago Tribune obituary, she had volunteered at the hospital during World War II. She was the enduring force of the Women’s Board—as it morphed from Lake Forest Hospital partner into the hospital’s indispensible phalanx of strong, influential, community-minded women—until her death at age 96 in 2000.

“We are still supporting the vision Mimi Hodgkins had for the Board all those years ago,” says Women’s Board President Lindsay Nero. “There’s so much to celebrate as we look back at the legacy of our group and recognize the lasting impact the Women’s Board continues to have on both the hospital and the community.

“We’re lucky we live in a philanthropic community like Lake Forest, and we’re blessed to have the generous support we’ve received at our events and through donations. It’s going to be exciting, this year’s benefit, because we haven’t had an in-person benefit since 2019.”

Past Women’s Board President Sue Skinner, who served at the helm from 1984-1986 and also worked as director of volunteers and as director of philanthropy

for a combined 20 years at the hospital, has been an avid Lake Forest Hospital fan for decades.

She vividly remembers, as a committee member, the day an architect explained his firm’s plans to enhance the hospital’s presence during a meeting.

“You should have heard him share the details with us,” says Skinner, who joined the Women’s Board in the late 1970s, after first volunteering at the hospital in 1972. “Every detail, every step, was top quality. The look of the streets of Lake Forest, the city’s ravines— those characteristics influenced the proposed designs he presented to us that day. Every little detail was important; no compromises.

“Lake Forest Hospital,” she adds, “has always been similarly focused. Nothing is as important to the hospital’s administration than seeing to it that the patient, every patient, has a positive, welcoming experience at the hospital every step of the way.”

Members of the hospital’s Women’s Board subscribe to such an admirable standard, too, year after year.

“Our mission,” Skinner says, “is very, very simple. It’s to support the hospital in any way possible. All of us serve enthusiastically because, by doing so, we’re emulating Mimi’s dedication to not only the Lake Forest Hospital but to the entire community as well.”

n February 26, the Fitzpatrick School of Irish Dance (FSID) officially launched in downtown Lake Forest. Attendees enjoyed live Irish music by The Boils and a performance by the newest FSID dancers before getting up on the dance floor as Katie Fitzpatrick T.C.R.G. led an interactive Irish céilí.

The crowd featured a mix of local families and Irish notables, including Sarah Keating, the Vice Consul of Ireland, Cliff Carlson, Publisher of the Irish American News, and Paul Dowling, Executive Director of Irish Community Services. The event was held at Collective Dance, 295 E. Illinois, where classes are currently held on Saturday mornings.

HEATHER FOWLER: MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE ONE HOME AT A TIME words by Rochelle Newman Rubinoff

H

eather Froman Fowler may not be helping the world in the way she envisioned when she was a student at the Moody Bible Institute, but she is still fulfilling her lifelong goal of helping people and giving back in a meaningful way.

She is doing it as a full-time realtor for @properties Fowler has had her real estate license for five years and before that she and her husband were active flippers—buying fixer-uppers, turning them around and reselling.

In fact, it was her success as a flipper that prompted her to focus on real estate full time.

“I was working with an agent during the flipping years, and at one point he looked at me and said, ‘You’re really good at this—you should do this full time,’” she says.

“I’m glad I listened to his suggestion. I really love it and I continue to grow every year.”

Prior to real estate, Fowler ran an accounting business for nonprofits, Additionally, she is an artist; she has painted murals all over the world for organizations and private clients.

Fortunately, these talents and interests all come into play in her current role at @properties. Fowler brings her true love of houses, her knowledge about finance and the real estate market and her artistic sensitivity and esthetic to help her clients in each step of the buying and selling process.

“I really do view real estate as another way of helping people. It’s a huge financial commitment, so I am happy I have the ability to guide them with the financial analysis component as well as bringing my visual side as far as staging and getting a project ready for market.”

“I feel like I’m able to use my skills and help my clients each step of the way. Moving is very stressful; it’s definitely one of the most stressful things you can do. And I understand that because I’ve moved a lot. So I just try to help people, whether they need to talk through some things with their game plan or coordinate with a mover or a house cleaner or things like that. I’m able to help them

and be there for them. I’ve even had some clients who have moved away and I coordinate everything on site, so they don’t really have to keep coming back to manage things.”

Because of all of the flipping she and her husband have done, they have hired a wide variety of contractors, plumbers, painters, etc. “So based on my experience or my other clients’ experience, people can be confident in professionals that I refer.”

“I always tell them our relationship does not stop here at the closing table. My clients feel very comfortable reaching out to me and do reach out to me after the sale is completed. I take my relationships seriously. It’s a longer-term thing than just one transaction.”

Fowler grew up in Michigan and moved to the Chicago area around 20 years ago. She and her husband Paul have three children, Tommy, 11, Maia, 9, and Asher, 7. She especially loves the flexibility her profession provides in being able to work full time and still be available for her young family.

She and her husband have continued flipping properties, but she thinks they’re going to stay in this Lake Bluff home for a while. “I think we’re going to be in this one for a long time. It’s just in a great location and we love the neighborhood. It’s close to the lake and close to town. We’re going to hunker down here.”

Fowler is nothing if not enthusiastic and dedicated to her clients’ best interests. Not only does she have extensive knowledge of area neighborhoods and schools, Fowler makes it a practice to be personally present at each showing, providing potential buyers with valuable local insight and confidence to help sellers sell faster. As a result of Fowler’s commitment to the success of her clients, she has bult a strong referral-based business and looks forward to growing it even more in the years ahead.
