he days are getting warmer, the flowers are blooming, and the sun is setting later – Spring is finally here! Though the world is still not rid of COVID-19, hopefully we have turned a new corner with the vaccines and our lives can edge slightly closer to “normal” in the near future. For many, vaccinations could be a determining factor on whether or not it is the right time to sell.
here is an even newer offshoot of the PLN called Zenlist, a subscription site that debuted in Chicagoland and San Francisco. Zenlist allows us to set up our clients to receive both Active MLS listings as well as listings on the PLN! Check with your agent to see they subscribe to this value-added tool, and if their brokerage allows their PLN listings to appear on Zenlist, as most but not all brokerages allow this. I think it is a great tool to have in our arsenal to help buyers get a leg up on competing buyers, as well as sellers get their house exposed ahead of other houses!
O
verall, the real estate market is still strong, largely due to the incredibly low inventory. Inventory across all price ranges in the Barrington Area has decreased 38.3% from last March. The average home price has increased 9.9% from last March. Closed sales were up 47.3% in comparison to last March.
I
’d like to discuss an interesting phenomenon that has shot to popularity in searching for off market listed properties. The phenomenon I am referring to is the PLN (Private Listing Network), which debuted on 4/4/2016. Up until then, properties had to “go live” into the MLS within 48 hours of being listed, which became impractical in this HGTV world we live in. Listing agents were hard pressed to stage, shoot, video and upload new listings in 48 hours. Now more than ever, it is crucial to make a great first impression when marketing a property.
Warm Regards, Connie If you would like to discuss your unique real estate needs
confidentially, you may call or text me at +1 847.508.7775 or email connie.antoniou@sothebysrealty.com.
H
ence the creation of the PLN, a place where initially only members of the Multiple Listing System (MLS) could park their “not quite ready for prime-time listings”, and where their peers could search to see what was coming soon. This site is similar to TAN (Top Agent Network), an invitation only site where agents can promote our upcoming listings and show them if our sellers are able to accommodate a showing.

n honor of Mother’s Day, in this issue’s Up Front we feature the gorgeous book, Mother & Child, by Claiborne Swanson Frank which provides glimpses into the lives of some of the most inspiring mother’s today, including Delfina Blaquier Figueras. In the book, Figueras (married to Argentinian polo player Nachos) describes meeting her children for the first time saying, “I remember thinking how is it possible that we just met and I love you so much already!” In Country vs. Town, Katie Himes speaks about her work with the Barrington Area Volunteer Connection and more. Fashion powerhouse Net-A-Porter tells Country their top trends in shoes and bags for spring to lighten up our look and prepare for sunnier days ahead. Chatting with Robert O’Connell III for our ‘Trey’ Magnifique feature story certainly leads to thoughts of The Thomas Crown Affair and Netflix’s newly released series, This is a Robbery: The World’s Biggest Art Heist. His life as an international art detective is fascinating and you won’t want to miss reading about this North Barrington resident’s
career and newest book. Liven up your day-to-day beyond Mother’s Day with the newest in spring floral trends. Aysel Cristian Floral Atelier gives top tips on how to make a floral arrangement for your home, sharing inspiration from the color palette used in Hannah Orr and Alex Klass’ wedding last spring held at Klass’ family home in Barrington. While Glen Egeland of the Barrington Flower Shop shares what he’s seeing as the newest trends in florals for spring. Ready for a luxurious vacation within driving distance? UP FRONT CULTURE, MURMURS & STYLE
In celebration of Mother’s Day, Country is sharing our favorite images from Mother & Child, the latest body of work by author and photographer Claiborne Swanson Frank. In it, the artist set out to explore what modern motherhood means in the 21st century. Turning her lens on 70 iconic families of mothers and children from such celebrated names as Delfina Figueras, Carolina Herrera, Lauren Santo Domingo, Anne Vyalitsyna, Aerin Lauder, and Patti Hansen, Swanson Frank’s stunning portraits capture the emotional bonds and beauty that frame the primal relationship of a mother and her child. Complementing her work is a series of questions-and-answers, in which Swanson Frank delicately tasks each mother to look within themselves and express what being a mother truly means to them. Their answers, while exceedingly thoughtful and introspective, are also amusing, fascinating, and moving. Each one of these deeply intimate and stunning portraits will captivate and inspire readers as they embark on this profound journey that reminds us all of the power of motherhood and the great gift of love.
“I hope to share this love that I’ve witnessed and captured, and those moments of beauty and joy. To remind all of us of the power of motherhood, and that the greatest gift of all is to be loved and to love in return.”
Veronica Swanson Beard, co-founder Veronica Beard

The all-new foiling Candela P-30—the world’s fastest all-electric passenger ship—will hit Stockholm’s waterways in 2022, shuttling passengers to and from the archipelago above the waves without wakes, noise, and CO2 emissions. Swedish tech company Candela will bring to Stockholm, Sweden—fast all-electric commuter ferries that quietly and efficiently carry passengers at speeds up to 30 knots. The intention of the new ferries is to eventually replace the city’s aging fleet of 60 diesel boats that serve commuters and visitors to and from the vast, 30,000-island archipelago that stretches from the city center. The foiling P-30 will hold the distinction of setting several world records: It will be the longest-range electric passenger ship, as well as the fastest, and will also be the most energy efficient fast ship ever built. The P-30 can operate in urban waterways at higher speeds than traditional passenger boats due to its creating virtually no wake that would otherwise damage nearby vessels or property. Mindful Medispa & Mediclinic in Hoffman Estates is the culmination of Dr. Lucie Bianchi’s greatest passions in life. Believing in high quality, affordable health care, and safe aesthetics for more than 20 years Bianchi has been helping people achieve beautiful skin with optimal health. Her Italian roots shine through in the beautiful, welcoming, and comfortable atmosphere she effortlessly cultivates at Mindful. Here, Bianchi has created a space where people can be themselves, relax, and enjoy the treatments they are about to have. Everyone is welcome at Mindful, where they cater to both those new to, and familiar with, aesthetic treatments. They offer the five-year filler, Bellafill, for more experienced clients who want to maintain what they love already and leave them more time to enjoy other treatments. Plenty of thoughtful touches abound, including the bar with a recharging station for electronics, snacks to sample, and hydrating drinks. “Life is short,” says Bianchi, “we should enjoy every experience.”

“I always keep one to two bottles of water and a spare pair of readers so I can see my phone when it beeps in the middle of the night. It is so important to drink lots of water for good health and to keep our skin looking its best. Hydrated skin shows less wrinkles and sagging; it’s the most affordable life hack there is to have glowing skin (although I also highly recommend doing much more than that).”
“Many are often surprised to learn I like hard rock. I actually love all music and there is a time and a place for all of it. Exercise is another great life hack to maintain your health and glowing skin, and I listen to Korn when I workout—it’s great motivation for when your body says no but your mind says, hell yes! When cooking, I listen to classic old blues— something complicated like Muddy Waters, Louis Jordan, or BB King.”
“I am addicted to Instagram. I post nearly every day and sometimes more than once a day. I love following the leaders in my industry, keeping up with community events, seeing the cool things my clients are doing, and staying in touch with friends and family. I love taking pictures so I am always reviewing, editing, creating collages, funny memes, or educational things for Instagram or for my personal use with friends. I love to make jokes, and perhaps if I wasn’t a doctor I would be a standup comedian. A very poor and destitute standup comedian!”

f there is one thing that Kim Alden has learned in her storied real estate career, it’s that timing is everything. This past February, Alden and her entire real estate team, left the firm she’d spent 15 years with to join forces with Compass, a real estate company that offers state-of-the art marketing and technology to its agents. “Some people thought I was crazy to make this kind of career change,” explains Alden—a premier luxury and residential real estate agent in the northwest suburbs—who had occupied the top-seller spot at her previous company for more than a decade. “But I was ready for a new challenge—and so was my team. The time was right.” Compass is a national real estate firm with global reach that was founded in 2012 and boasts of more than 20,000 dynamic agents coast to coast. Its differentiator in the real estate market is its technological platform that allows agents to pull all of the information they need into one place. “Compass founder Robert Reffkin was a real estate agent,” Alden says, “and it would make him crazy to pull some information from here, some from there—it was all over the place. He hired the best in the technology world from Tesla, Amazon, and Zillow to build a single platform that could collect all of the information an agent would ever need.” Alden says it has been a game changer in working with clients, who nearly all begin their real estate search online. “We can now make side-by-side comparisons of properties, so
Kim Alden
clients can easily see how one home differs from another,” she adds. “In our business, the internet—and using it smartly—are the keys to delivering for our buyers and sellers.” Compass’ marketing know-how and technological advantage is surely working for Alden and her team of 21 agents. In March, they had 48 homes go under contract. “Everyone is flourishing in our new office,” she says. “We’re working hard, but we’re working more efficiently with the entire Compass company behind us. They made our transition from one office to another seamless.” Alden says she feels refreshed and with some extra pep in her step these days—making the opportunities in front of her feel endless. “It’s wonderful to be at this point in my career and feel the same excitement and joy I did when I started,” she says. “People say I look lighter—and I feel that, too. I’m looking forward to onboarding new team members soon. There’s a lot of work to be done and this is a great place to do it.” To learn more, visit compass.com/agents/kim-alden. HEALTH INSURANCE AND SENIORS
DEDUCTIBLES
Most insurances have a deductible or an initial portion a patient is responsible for before the insurance coverage starts. This is also true for Medicare at the first of each year. Regardless of insurance type, most plans have a deductible structure, so make sure you are aware of your out-of-pocket responsibility.

S
eniors turning 65 typically look to Medicare for their insurance needs. However, with the advent of Advantage plans, there are more choices than ever. This can be difficult to navigate and understanding the differences will lead to the best choice for an individual. FIRST THE BASICS
Most insurances pay for medical services, covering a large portion, usually 80 percent. The remaining 20 percent is often covered by a supplemental policy or secondary policy. If someone does not have a secondary policy, that portion’s responsibility falls on the patient. Sometimes insurances won’t pay the full amount of a medical bill, and that portion could also be the responsibility of the patient. IN NETWORK AND OUT OF NETWORK
This could be important depending on the type of insurance one has. Certain insurance plans known as PPO or Preferred Provider Organization could cost more but allow the patient more options for their care, as it has a broader coverage. HMO or Health Maintenance Organization is typically a cheaper option but limits care to only those physicians, hospitals, and other services that participate in that specific HMO. For an HMO, having “in network” care allows for the most cost-effective option, but limits where you can go for your care. PPO’s
EOB, EXPLANATION OF BENEFIT
We get questions about EOBs or Explanation of Benefits from time to time. EOBs are complex paperwork provided by the insurance company to patients, stating the care received. For any questions regarding an EOB, always ask for an explanation from your healthcare provider as this is unique to the specific care provided. WHAT SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
Health insurance, like any other insurance, is a necessary part of life. There are unique and personal considerations you should factor in deciding the type of insurance right for you. For those remaining local, an HMO plan may be more cost effective, but remember the more healthcare needed, the most your out-of-pocket cost could be, even with initially lower premiums. If you need flexibility or physicians that don’t participate in HMOs, then a PPO plan would be more suitable. DIGITAL DENTISTRY WORDS BY DR. JAMES T. GAVRILOS
D
ental work has never been an experience that many find pleasing. Part of the experience used to include impressions. These are the trays that are filled with that messy silicone type of material that hardens as it sits in your mouth for five minutes. The great anews is, those impressions are gone forever. Digital scanners are changing the world of dentistry. The dentist can prepare teeth for porcelain restorations and immediately scan them to save the information that they would usually get from the impressions. Patients no longer have to feel that unpleasant sense of gagging as the impression material hardens in their mouth. Our office has been using the 3Shape Trios scanner for a year now and the results have been tremendous. The crowns, veneers, bridges, mouth guards, and implants have seen a significant increase in their quality of fit and finish. The scanner
takes approximately 1,500 scans in a three-dimensional mode. The scans are then all stitched together by the software. A 3-D model can then be printed and used for any required restoration. I have been able to use it to measure clearances, preview smiles, and communicate shape and color to the laboratory technician. Our patients have been very vocal about the scanner and they approve. This technology is not limited to just restorations. Multiple scans of the same patient can be grouped together. This grouping is of different scans over time. The software allows us to see how the patient is wearing down their teeth and how teeth have moved over time. This type of diagnosis helps the patient visualize what is happening with their mouth. If you are in need of dental work but dread the thought of all those impressions, come see us for a demonstration of our new Trios scanner. Once you have seen how it works, you will never go back. Dr. James T. Gavrilos is located at 129 Park Avenue in Barrington. For more information, call 847-381-4040 or visit barringtondentist.com.

‘TREY’ MAGNIFIQUE International art detective and North Barrington resident Robert E. O’Connell III penned his debut novel, The Art of Spies, giving readers a taste of the international thrills and intrigue that he’s experienced on the job for over 35 years. Author Travis Heermann likens the book to The Thomas Crown Affair meets The Day of the Jackal and The Manchurian Candidate. WORDS BY BILL MCLEAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARIA PONCE BERRE STYLING AND GROOMING BY THERESA DEMARIA

O’Connell.
ob O’Connell’s path to the purchase of his first work of art—and, ultimately, a fascinating career as an international art detective—began with a $20 bill and an order from his mother, Carole, who had handed the cash to her then-13year-old son at Cinderella City Mall in Englewood, Colorado in the 1970s. Mom’s order to O’Connell and his four siblings, who had also received $20 apiece: “Meet me back here in two hours.” O’Connell wandered into an art gallery at the mall and stayed there, for a while. “For two hours,” recalls O’Connell, now 60, a resident of North Barrington, and, since 1997, President and CEO of Barrington-based O’Connell International Arts, Inc., a firm of internationally recognized fine art experts within the insurance industry, the art world, and legal community since 1997. “I fell in love with a watercolor painting of a sailboat at sunset. The art dealer was patient enough to explain medium to me and I had to have the watercolor. I gave my $20 to the gallery owner, and he told me that he’d hold the painting for me. I then paid what I could when I could. The owner ended up shipping the painting to me when I was a sophomore in college at the University of San Diego, after my final payment. I think the total cost wound up being $1,200.” Decades later O’Connell produced an entirely different kind of art—his debut novel, The Art of Spies. It set sail in November 2020. The book paints the exploits of an international art detective named Trey Hansen. The first-time novelist, born Robert E. O’Connell III, chose that name for the protagonist because he was nicknamed “Trey” and his mother’s maiden name is Hansen. Hansen, JWC | COUNTRY 39

the character, is the man they call to investigate multimillion-dollar art heists … but what happens when a CIA-trained assassin starts tying up loose ends? And what if that assassin might be his father? Did we mention O’Connell’s late father, Robert E. O’Connell Jr., was a career CIA agent? “My father was military tough and a man of very few words,” O’Connell says. “His silence certainly could be intimidating. I remember returning from a business trip to Cuba and having a conversation with my father. One of his early comments was, ‘Glad you got out of Cuba alive.’ On my trips all over the world—before the pandemic I’d typically travel 100,000-plus miles each year—I keep journals, writing what I saw, smelled, heard, and felt. People on planes ask me what I do. After I tell them I’m an art detective, they often ask me, ‘Like the one in The Thomas Crown Affair? My reply is, ‘Yeah, kind of.’” “The novel I wrote was cathartic; I’d had it in my mind for decades. I love telling stories.” His story about the late Raymond Bushell, a lawyer and collector of Japanese art, is a favorite because a belief uttered by Bushell during an investigation mirrors one of O’Connell’s staunch tenets. O’Connell cherishes every piece of his eclectic collection of art and considers his relationships with the artists just as valuable. “Bushell has lost two, maybe three, Japanese carved ivory and wood netsuke and inro,” says O’Connell, who earned his Master of Arts in Art History at San Diego State University and founded another OIA entity, O’Connell International Advisors, in 2013, to provide his clients rare market counsel and coverage. “I was investigating for Lloyd’s of London, and I’ll never forget what Bushell told me. ‘It’s never about the money; it never has been. I can tell you what I was wearing and what I ate on the day I acquired these objects of art. They are my children.’” “That’s exactly how I feel about my art collection, beginning with the first painting I bought in the mall when I was teenager.” O’Connell investigated the case of Los Angeles ophthalmologist Steven G. Cooperman in 1999. Cooperman was convicted of fraud for arranging the theft of two paintings, a Picasso and a Monet, from his Brentwood, California, home in an attempt to collect $17.5 million. O’Connell, working with the FBI, recovered the paintings years later, leading to Cooperman’s arrest and sentencing of 37 months in jail. O’Connell—who was born in Evanston and, at the age of 8, moved from Northern Virginia to Colorado with his family in 1968—married Darci, also an avid collector of art, in 2005; Darci’s
brother, Dave, and her future husband were best friends in high school in Littleton, Colorado. Bob and Darci have a 7-year-old daughter, Finnian, and 26-year-old twins, Billy and Matt. “I always thought I’d get my Ph.D., then teach at a prestigious university in a tweed blazer with elbow patches,” admits O’Connell, who moved to Chicago in the 1990s and settled in North Barrington about six years ago. “But I’m thrilled about my career choices, as I have been able to pursue my passions for art and utilize my academic research and investigative skills on a daily basis. I love thinking on my feet and having that sixth sense about my work, especially knowing when people are lying to my face.” “What I like about the job is each case is unique, a puzzle, with a whodunit aspect,” continues O’Connell, whose television hero was the inimitable character portrayed by the late Peter Falk in the show Columbo. “The best moments in Columbo were when Lieutenant Columbo, who was getting ready to leave the room, paused and said to the guilty suspect, ‘I have just one more question …’ ” Cuba

Vibrant floral arrangment showing varying stem heights.
f you happen to find yourself at O’Hare airport at 4:30 on a given morning, you may run into Barrington Flower Shop owner, Glen Egeland. “Growers overseas have experienced staffing problems this past year due to COVID-19, so now certain flowers only come in on certain days,” says Egeland who has been in the flower business since he was 8 years old. In 1919, his family opened their flower business in downtown Chicago where Egeland pitched in after school. His natural eye and talent for floral designing drew the attention of his Uncle who took him under his tutelage and began to foster his potential. For the past 32 years, Egeland’s flower shop has been in Barrington at the same location on Cook Street, where you can find him most days. The former College of DuPage floral design teacher hosts a weekly “Wine and Design” class at his local flower shop, “Bring your own wine to enjoy while learning and making a flower arrangement,” says Egeland. Egeland is noticing that popular spring flowers this May are tulips, hydrangeas, irises, and forsythias. “Monochromatic arrangements are coming back into style, which I love on a long table,” says Egeland. “With vibrant colors being welcomed this spring such as green, chartreuse, and orange.” In lieu of one arrangement in the center, embrace the monochromatic trend by having “glass cubes filled with flowers all in one color down the center of a long table,” says Egeland. “The purpose of the gathering dictates the floral arrangements. For a laid-back, informal vibe an arrangement of all the same flower works best, like a beautiful white ranunculus. Blue hydrangeas

For a more formal event, mix up the flower types in each vase— still sticking to one color in each vase.” “Green is the most popular color so far this spring, but that does not include dark green—only different shades of light green,” says Egeland. “The second most in demand color this spring is purple or lavender, with the ever-popular white coming in third.” Aysel Cristian Floral Atelier’s lead designer and owner, Camille Cristian’s minimalistic, sustainable, and unique designs were on display at Hannah Orr and Alex Klass’ wedding this past spring held on the grounds of Klass’ family home in Barrington. “To create an equally beautiful tablescape at home with flowers sourced from your local flower shop, or grocery store, start with knowing what occasion you are buying for—a dinner party or a holiday,” says Cristian, “and decide ahead of time where the flowers are going to be placed.” Carefully inspect the flowers before snapping them up—make sure the blooms are not bruised and the stems are damage free. “I always flip the stems upside down and look at the cut—if it is blackish the flowers were not given a fresh cut, possibly shortening their vase life,” shares Cristian. To add interest to the monochromatic spring floral trend, “choose two complimentary colors. Tulips, hydrangeas, gerberas, or roses all make for a great selection,” says Cristian, who also sees green as a top color this spring. “For greens, I love eucalyptus, ruscus and sometimes branches, such as forsythia.” Don’t let thoughts of needing specific flower arranging tools hold you back from trying to make an arrangement at home. “All you need,” says Cristian, “are garden shears, a knife, chicken wire, floral tape, and a vessel.” But where to find chicken wire? “At the hardware store,” says Cristian. “Cut a piece, make it into a ball to serve as the armature, and place it in the container before adding water.” Alternatively, use floral tape instead “to create a gird, securing the ends by going around them with tape. Add flower preservative to the water (if you have it),” shares Cristian. And to allow for more water intake “always first cut the stems on an angle.” Before beginning designing the arrangement, “remove all foliage that would sit below the water level—leaves in the water turn it murky, shortening the vase life for flowers,” says Cristian. She also shares that for roses, its best to remove all the guard and damaged petals. To create depth, Cristian always alternates the stem height, placing heavy foliage (such as eucalyptus or fern) in the vase first before adding flowers. Once ready to start arranging, Cristian says to “place the mass flowers (those with a bigger head, such as hydrangea or gerbera) close to the lip of the vase to aesthetically balance the arrangement, keeping the small head flowers higher so they don’t get lost in the arrangement.” This creates an “S” shape arrangement—with one side spilling over the lip of the vase and the other side higher. “I believe gradating colors of flowers works better and is visually more pleasing than the polka dot way of designing. And I love the color palettes of white, cream, and blush; rust, coral, red, and cream; and blue, yellow, and cream.” Alternatively, both the Barrington Flower Shop and Aysel Cristian offer flower subscription services for weekly home delivery and are just a phone call away for any special arrangement needed to elevate a tablescape. For more information, visit Barrington Flower Shop, 201 South Cook Street, Barrington, barringtonflowershop.com, 800-382-4090; visit ayselcristianfloralatelier.com to learn about Cristian’s online flower arranging tutorial classes.

or all the firepit and S’mores fans out there, here is a delicious homemade Graham cracker recipe. To make the crackers into S’mores, sandwich fire-toasted marshmallows and your favorite chocolate bars between the crackers. Graham crackers are named for Presbyterian minister Sylvester Graham, who introduced the coarsely-ground, unsifted wheat flour. He believed the flour could be an antidote to the poor health suffered by people who ate too much white bread. A vegetarian and believer in high-fiber diets, Graham was also a rather severe fellow who recommended “hard mattresses, open bedroom windows, chastity, cold showers, and loose clothing.” Unlike its namesake, the cracker is sweet and can be made in a variety of ways: With dark brown sugar and darker honey, they take on a sweeter, darker flavor. Use lighter-flavored honey and light brown sugar and a lighter cracker results. I include two teaspoons of cinnamon in the dough. But you can add extra cinnamon by brushing the crackers with egg wash and sprinkling them with cinnamon sugar for a glazed, crunchy finish. Be sure to bake in the center of a preheated oven. The crackers will crisp up nicely as they cool. For the Graham flour, try to use Turkey Red flour from The Mill at Janie’s Farm. It’s 100 percent whole grain, milled from organically grown hard red winter wheat, stone-ground, and unsifted. You can buy it directly from janiesmill.com. Ingredients: • 3 cups Graham flour • 3 cups all-purpose flour • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon (Saigon cinnamon is the best) • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 pound unsalted butter, slightly softened • 1 1/2 cups light brown sugar, not too densely packed (dark brown sugar may be substituted for a darker flavor) • 1/4 cup honey (light honey-like Rapsflower Blossom honey works well)
Spread your work surface with a covering of parchment paper. Trace around a cookie sheet onto the parchment paper. Leaving a 4-inch border around your tracing, cut out the shape from the parchment paper, keeping the 4-inch border around it. Take handfuls of the playdough-like dough and mash them down connecting one handful of dough to another and flattening with your hands until you have a big rectangle of partially-flattened dough on the parchment within the cookie-sheet drawing. Completely cover the partially-flattened dough with parchment paper. Using a rolling pin, flatten the dough to an even 1/8 inch thickness. Remove the top layer of parchment paper. Cut the dough into a grid of 1½ inch x 2½ inch rectangular crackers, puncturing each cracker with the tines of a fork to make three rows of dots in each cracker. Carefully slide the parchment-backed grid of raw crackers onto a cookie sheet. Set aside. Repeat until you have rolled out and scored all of the dough into cracker shapes on cookie sheets. Cover each cookie sheet of raw crackers with parchment paper; place all in the freezer and freeze the dough for two hours. Place oven rack in the center position. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Using a thin spatula, work quickly to remove frozen raw crackers one at a time from the cookie sheet, placing them on a fresh, parchment-lined cookie sheet and leaving at least ¼ inch of space between each cracker. Repeat this process until all raw graham crackers are now on fresh, parchment-lined cookie sheets. If desired, spread raw crackers with egg wash and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
Bake graham crackers for 12 to 14 minutes until golden Optional glaze: Egg wash made with 1 egg, 1 tablespoon of water, brown. Remove from oven and cool. and a sprinkling of cinnamon sugar on top JWC | COUNTRY 49

ust under two hours away lies a charming Wisconsin town. Home to the famed Kohler Co., Kohler is truly a “destination.” The American Club, its wellknown landmark constructed of red brick and Vermont slate, was built in 1918. Under the Destination Kohler umbrella exist a vast array of private lodging options as well. We visited Pond, a cozy, beautifully appointed cabin ensconced in a stand of trees, situated just above a rolling river and adjacent to a large peaceful pond. Up the gravel road is Pond’s sister cabin, the Lake house, similar in footprint but perched on a bluff above Lake Michigan. Lake cabin wrapped in a semi-circular shroud of pines sports spectacular lake views and glowing sunsets. The two cabins add to the resort’s growing portfolio of private cabin lodging (now totaling four properties), providing private and elevated getaways. Located south of Whistling Straits golf course, Pond features two luxurious bedrooms and two bathrooms, along with a chef-inspired kitchen and a warm living area with a wood-burning cast iron fireplace. Light pours through the large picture frame windows illuminating the living room’s sturdy trunk coffee table, large green leather couch, and nature-inspired artwork. The entire experience is glamping at its finest. Cabin life proved peaceful and we were “safely distanced” as far as the eye could see. We prepared meals in the fully stocked kitchen, roasted S’mores over a blazing fire in the outdoor fire pit, swayed in rockers on the wooden wrap-around porch watching the sun set, and ended evenings fireside playing board games.
Pond Cabin rocking chair on the wrap-around wooden porch overlooking the river
When ready for an adventure, we popped over to Whistling Straits, just a five-minute drive north along the lake. Once there, you’d swear you were on a links course in the British Isles. Arguably the greatest public championship course in the United States, this is a golfer’s dream—playing on one of the hall of fame designer Pete Dye’s courses. Host to the 2004, 2010, and 2015 PGA Championships and the 2007 U.S. Senior Open, this breathtaking course is JWC | COUNTRY 51

sculpted along two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. A stunning stone and slate structure serves as the elegantly rustic clubhouse offering panoramic views of the course and lake. With our cabin located only 10 to 15 minutes from the Village of Kohler, it is easy to travel back and forth between Pond and all the other Destination Kohler offerings. If you are feeling rather athletic, visit the Sports Core Health & Racquet Club (available to
Pond guests), take an invigorating spin class at Bold Cycle, or enjoy a vinyasa class at Yoga on the Lake. Bold Cycle, a 3,000 square-foot hip indoor cycling studio, gets your heart and legs pumping. Yoga on the Lake provides the perfect place to find peace in a brightly lit studio perched above Wood Lake. We followed our morning of rigorous activity with a visit to Forbes Five-Star rated Kohler Waters Spa to enjoy a massage, steam room, sauna, pool, plunge baths, and rooftop lounge. The next day (and an absolute must on your agenda) we lunched at River Wildlife, a private rustic log house in the middle of a beautiful wilderness preserve. Other than lunching (which was our principal activity this day), River Wildlife offers year-round outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing (the latter two in the year’s snow-covered months). We enjoyed a leisurely lunch that felt well-deserved after the prior day’s rigor. I ordered the Beef Tenderloin Gorgonzola Melt made with roasted beef tenderloin layered with Applewood-smoked bacon, caramelized onions, wild mushrooms, and Gorgonzola cheese, served open-faced on sourdough bread. It was worth every single calorie.

My husband enjoyed the Pheasant Reuben and my daughter the “Grilled Cheese,” which was the best grilled cheese we have ever or will ever encounter. River Wildlife’s take on the classic involved layered Wisconsin Swiss and aged Cheddar cheeses with tomato, onion, and bacon on natural grain bread and grilled until crusty and hot. My daughter customized the sandwich swapping the natural grain bread for cinnamon swirl and the onion for a marmalade—the result was a sinfully delicious combination of sweet and savory. Our server explained that the chef is happy to customize any order. If you can believe it, we followed our entrées with a decadent three-layer carrot cake with thick whipped cream and a warm apple crisp à la mode. Gourmet cuisine enjoyed with family in a cozy log cabin with two corpulent red cardinals sitting on a branch just outside our window (I suspect everyone is well fed here), was an outing we will fondly recall for years to come. With Destination Kohler’s numerous lodging offerings, guests can visit several times, each with a wildly different experience. We are deciding where to stay next. Will it be Sandhill, the secluded rustic retreat nestled on 350 acres in Mosel, Wisconsin? If we choose Sandhill, my daughter will be able to invite a friend as it
sleeps four to six guests. It includes all of the amenities of Pond and Lake cabins with an added stand-alone sauna hut and the ability to work with your very own chef. Or will it be Red Fox—the three-bedroom, two-bathroom cabin tucked away on several acres of wilderness along the Sheboygan River and across from the Kohler Stables? Red Fox features three floors and accommodates up to six guests in the 2,600-square-foot cabin. Of course, if you aren’t looking for rustic privacy, there is the iconic award-winning American Club’s old-world luxury with numerous restaurant choices. There are so many lodging options all set in the quaint Wisconsin countryside just over the border … which will you choose? Book now, wonder awaits. Maria Devins, photography by Robin Subar
BROKER FOR LIFE W
WORDS BY SHERRY THOMAS
hen it comes to the global pandemic, the phrase “no one saw this coming” is an understatement. Once it arrived, it altered our lives in ways no one could have expected—sending the Chicago-area real estate market into a frenzy that is as unprecedented as the virus itself. “We had a seller’s market in 2014 but this is insanity,” says Maria Devins, a real estate agent and broker who has specialized in putting her buyer’s needs first for nearly 15 years. “As a buyer’s agent, it is war out there right now and it is hard.” Fortunately for Devins’ clients, her experience and reputation for being your “broker for life” have uniquely prepared her for this battle. She’s tough and won’t back down, especially when it comes to what’s in the best interest of her clients. Case in point is a transaction she worked on earlier this year. Her buyers put in an offer that was $16,000 over the asking price and just when they were sure they got the house, the agent called and gave them bad news. Another bidder not only went over the asking price, but waived the appraisal and inspection. Devins was shocked. “As a buyer’s agent, I would never, ever, put my buyers at risk,” she explains. “You have to have an inspection. You have to know what you’re getting. It’s too high of a risk and ultimately, where does that put the buyer?” Three days later, the agent called her back. The deal fell through and the house was back on the market. Were her sellers still interested? “I said ‘my offer stands as is … your client cannot have their cake and eat it too’,” she says. “I told her that ‘yes, it is a seller’s market and we addressed that with an offer that is $16,000 over, but I won’t let my clients walk in blindly’.” And it’s a good thing they didn’t. As it turns out, this house did not have a working furnace. “So I went back to the agent and said ‘now that we’ve told you, you know as an agent that you will have to disclose it on your disclosures’,” she says, explaining that her buyers still wanted the house but not until the issue with the furnace was resolved. “I said ‘wouldn’t it make sense for your seller to stay with us and address some of these issues?’ That’s the kind of strategy I will do as a buyer’s agent.” It’s this level of expertise and tenacity that Devins brings to every transaction, regardless of the market, which she predicts will begin to settle down over the next six months.
“Last year was crazy. We all started out with anticipation of an even-keeled market but when the pandemic struck, sellers and buyers were frightened. I had a few buyers who said, ‘we’ve got to buy … we just have to’,” she explains. “We did go out but it was a different ballgame. As a buyer’s agent, my whole car was a medical vehicle with Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, paper towels, booties, gloves.” Devins admits she was nervous a year ago that the market might spiral downward, especially considering how many people were out of work. “I didn’t think we’d be going into a crash but knew there would be short sales coming. I felt bad for newer agents but for me, I just braced myself. I braced my clients,” she says. “I remember I had probably over a dozen sellers and they froze, said they didn’t want to list right now. We respected that, of course. We want everyone to be safe.” The reluctance to list is, in part, what continues to drive the current seller’s advantage because it has created a shortage of inventory. Another undeniable factor is how the pandemic fueled the need for homes that not only function for living but also for working and learning. When those two things were combined, Devins says it was the perfect storm to what we are seeing right now. “As a listing agent, it is also very difficult for sellers. They are overwhelmed as well,” she adds. “At the end of the day, it’s a give and take. It’s not always about the biggest price. The nicest transaction is where all come to the table and they both gave a little and got a little. Nobody wants to feel taken or abused or bullied, because this is what we’re seeing in this market.” She refuses to allow that to happen to her clients, even if it means walking out of a showing. “It’s got to be 100 percent, working for your client, but secondly working together with the agent to really bring the two together.” When it doesn’t work, Devins does what she does best—lifting up her clients and continuing to fight for them. “I say ‘I’m sorry. You didn’t win the bid. That’s not your house. Your house will reveal itself.’ Just like I tell my sellers that ‘your buyer will reveal itself.’ I believe there is a house for every person and a person for every home.” Maria Devins is a Broker Associate at Baird & Warner’s Palatine office. LIVIE THE MORK WORDS BY ROCHELLE NEWMAN RUBINOFF ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKO

arrington friends, did you know there is a celebrity living amongst us? Please meet Livie the Mork! Liv is a hard-working pooch who has out-paw-formed all expectations. She is a paid social media influencer, advertising sensation, and has appeared in numerous commercials and television shows. Liv’s life did not begin so glamorously. She is a survivor puppy, which is how she got her name, Liv. Liv’s owner brought her home, bottle fed her, nurtured, and cared for her from the moment she was born. Like any new proud pet owner, Liv’s mom dressed her to the hilt and posted these incredibly adorable and fashionable photos on social media. This led to Liv’s first professional gig at only 10 weeks old. But please make no mistake, Liv is not just another pretty puppy face. Liv, who is half maltese and half yorkie, is a consummate professional. She has one hour of professional training every week and works for at least an hour a day on her training at home about five times a week. To date, Liv has over 100 tricks she performs on command. Some of the standouts are her ability to sneeze on command, wave to her fans, and cross her paws back and forth. Liv is definitely a photographer’s favorite for her ability to not only strike a pose but also to hold it! All of this hard work has resulted in a busy and successful professional career. Liv’s credits are overflowing with print and billboard advertising, fashion shows, live events, trade shows, commercials, and TV shows. Liv also has a published children’s book series, her first book is Liv: A CBB Girl. Prior to the pandemic, Liv was traveling up to six times a month for her various jobs. And even during the pandemic, she was still landing big accounts, including Target, Purina, Natural Balance, and Sleepypod. In fact, Liv will be the feature face on Purina’s new packaging launch. Liv has appeared in Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, and Vogue, just to name a few publications. She has also appeared on numerous
television shows including Most Expensivest with 2Chainz, People TV, E News, and World’s Most Amazing Dogs. And if all of that isn’t impressive enough, she is the star of a new show about to launch on Amazon and Netflix. She has over 200,000 followers across all of her social media platforms, including over 120,000 on Instagram alone. Liv has appeared in both New York Fashion Week and LA Fashion Week 13 times. But recently, Liv turned down invitations to participate in both of those events. Her health and wellbeing are top priority and it was time for Liv to have a bit of a break. Luckily for Liv, her mom-ager is always on the lookout for her best interest. She is well aware that Liv literally doesn’t have a voice and she needs to be her advocate. For more information, follow Liv on Instagram @Liviethemork.
